I’m so sad that San Diego Comic-Con is already over.

The Geekscape team descended from all over (like Philadelphia and Canada) to take in, hang out at, and cover the phenomenal event. If you’ve missed our coverage so far, you can check out the brand new Geekscape.net for daily recaps from myself and Mikaela, as well as coverage on some of the amazing offsite events that we were privileged enough to attend. There’s more coming down the pipeline as well, so be sure to keep your eyes tuned right here!

Mikaela also spent hours taking photos of so much of the next-level cosplay on display at SDCC, so be sure to follow the @GeekscapeForever Instagram page for a steady stream of incredible outfits.

As I mentioned in my spot on the recent SDCC special episode of Geekscape, I feel like after seven years, as the show floor gets unfathomably busier and as the few things that you actually want to buy require more and more and more work to do so, the expo hall itself definitely begins to lose some of its lustre. What continues to amaze me, however, is the absolutely insane work that these studios and distributors put into these temporary installations. The amount of work required to build these temporary buildings and giant logos and building wraps is just unbelievable… just for them to all be torn down like they never even existed days later.

This was Monday morning. Nothing is sacred.

Over the past few years, FX has been located on the back side of the convention centre, right across from the Hilton Bayfront hotel. In previous years the offsite event has been labelled as the FXHibition, and has always featured some cool art pieces, and absolutely impressive activations based on some of FX’ flagship shows, like the mixed-reality experience for Legion in 2017, or the insanely freaky ‘Fearless VR’ for American Horror Story. Looking back on previous years (not just for FX, but for SDCC as a whole) it’s certainly interesting to note that there appeared to be very few VR-driven experiences vs. previous conventions — this time around, nearly everything was practical.

As always, this year’s event was all new, and it brought with it a new name. The FX Fearless Forum was in the same location, and featured awesome (and practical) activations for series like Archer, What We Do in the Shadows, Mayans, It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, and an incredible haunted house for American Horror Story: 1984. Keep scrolling for a few photos and impressions for each activation, and a description of the haunted house that basically had Mikaela peeing her pants.

The Fearless Forum seemed to have decent-length lines all of the time, but one thing that I was super thankful for was an open area where essentially anyone could just walk in and help themselves to sunscreen and hand-sanitizer. The area was themed after It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, and I think it’s really nice that something super practical like sunscreen wasn’t locked behind a giant lineup, so a huge thanks to FX for this.

There was also a small setup for Mayans, that had a small trailer, a few motorcycles, and some biker-looking dudes giving airbrush tattoos to fans of the show.

Archer had a cool oxygen bar setup for Archer: 1999. I had no idea what an oxygen bar was prior to this event… and I kind of still don’t but it was a neat setup. The activation looked like a spaceship, and had a few interactive pieces around the area (and even a trivia game on some tablets, which you can also play at home using your Amazon Echo). At the bar itself there were a number of different oxygen stations. You stick a plastic tube in your nostrils (thankfully FX provided a new one for each person), and select between different ‘flavours’ of oxygen to breathe, like Piña Colada, Orange/Peach, Chocolate/Cherry, and Lavender/Balsam Fir needles. I think that my sense of smell may be nearly as bad as my sense of sight, because while Mikaela could sense a stark difference between each ‘flavour’, I was definitely struggling to tell any difference. The oxygen apparently perks you up, but I didn’t really need it, as the next activation for American Horror Story: 1984 absolutely pumps you full of energy.

The next activation was called American Horror Story: 1984 – Face The Darkness, and is basically a very impressive (and very scary) haunted house experience. Coming out of this experience, I think that it was the very best singular activation held at SDCC this year. I also thought that Face The Darkness utilized its small space so well, and that the way that the aviation weaves you through the different rooms and areas made the space feel far, far larger than it actually was. You start out with six other ‘camp counsellors in training’ in a small room filled with 1980’s paraphernalia like VHS tapes and old board games, and this marks your introduction to Camp Redwood, where you’ll be spending the next ~15 minutes (and probably much of September/October when the show airs). After a couple of moments, the lead counsellor comes in to tell you about all the training that you’re about to go through (this guy was super charismatic and kept making great dad jokes, and was even wearing the same shorts in this 1984 experience as Matt Kelly was that week), like how to use the very convenient and sophisticated night vision goggles when another counsellor bursts through the door to tell you all that something has gone terribly wrong in the forest, and that there is something out there. The lead counsellor tries to reach the camp director on the radio, and decides to go after her when he can’t. Seconds after he leaves, a terrified camp director warns us over the radio that something is in the forest and to get away while we can.

So, just like the 1980’s slasher films that the experience (and upcoming season of American Horror Story) is based on, instead of running in the opposite direction, the counsellor that’s left instead leads us into the forest (and she didn’t seem to hear me when I asked “Why don’t we bring these night vision goggles with us?” either).

So we leave the cabin, and are all of a sudden in a foggy forested area that sort of reminded me of the swamp from the DC Universe Swamp Thing activation last year. You could see a truck off in the distance, you were having to fan through branches and leaves that blocked your path, and you had no idea where counsellor was leading you. Again, we’re inside in the middle of a temporary building in the Gaslamp District of San Diego, but this forest felt real as hell. The counsellor ends up leaving us in a wrong director, and as we turn around, a tall man with his face obscured appears in the fog and begins walking towards us. The counsellor screams, Mikaela and some of the other attendees scream louder, and beginning running through some tight forested corridors towards a cabin in the distance. I’m at the back of the pack, and just as I’m about to turn each corner, I look behind me to see the tall man right there, pacing relentlessly with the classic Jason Voorhees walk.

We get into the cabin — I somehow make it through just before someone else and in their terror they nearly slam the door on my hand (it would have been worth it). Everyone is freaking out, and the camp director has taken refuge here too. She asks us what we’re doing there, and reiterates that we need to escape, and tasks us all with finding a key somewhere in the room (I’m not sure if it was to the truck outside or something else), all while the killer is outside banging on the door. After a couple of minutes, someone screams, as the killer is now crawling through the window on the opposite side of the cabin. The director tells us to all go into the closet, which ends up being a way out of the cabin, and we’re now walking through a nearly pitch-black area with people randomly grabbing at our feet (there was a lot of screaming here, naturally).

Joe Scarnici/Getty Images for FX

We finally make it to another room, where for a moment we think we’re safe, until we see that the walls are covered in bloody writing. We start looking around at what to do next, when a huge banging sound freaks everyone out even more, and when a chainsaw juts through the wall in front of us. The lights come up, everyone starts nervously laughing, and the experience is over.

We’re led into the final room, where we have our badges scanned so we can be emailed the GIF of the final jump scare, and where we could help ourselves to some AHS themed goodies.

Again, the activation freaked the hell out of everyone, and I loved every second of it. It’s still completely crazy to me that they were able to pull of such an insane, and truly scary experience in such a small space.

The other standout at the Fearless Forum was the What We Do In The Shadows lair. This was a small-ish room (with great AC) that was, naturally, a vampire’s lair. Inside there was a photo-op where you could “become” a vampire, which was cute, and the decor of the room felt just like what you’d expect from watching the series. The best part here were the two vampires that were walking around, interacting and making fun of visitors, and bickering to each other in hilarious fashion. I swear I could have watched these two all day, it was wonderful.

The general area itself also housed a few photo opportunities including some cool FX logos (one made of PVC pipes that only looked like the logo when viewed from certain angles), a giant screen that showed just what people were tweeting about the Fearless Forum, and there were even areas where you could get customized merchandise like phone cases or hats. Overall, it was another phenomenal year for FX at SDCC, and the Forum was absolutely successful, as I definitely started watching the What We Do In The Shadows series on the way home, and after a couple of years of not watching American Horror Story, the September 18th premiere of 1984 is absolutely in my calendar.

In a very well crafted summer of promotions, FX premiered its sixth season of its Emmy Award Winning series, ‘American Horror Story’. While its theme is generally announced before the premiere, FX kept it a secret from their fans. How they maintained the secret? By having CEO John Landgraf send out the marketing team, who, “went out and created many more trailers than you’ve actually seen for hypothetical seasons of American Horror Story, in different genres, different places. One of them is accurate, and the others are all misdirects,… We think it will be fun for the audience to have the surprise this year.”

Now, what you read below, can be considered spoilers, so if don’t want to be spoiled because you haven’t seen the episode, go watch the episode. If you’ve seen the episode, or don’t mind being spoiled, happy reading!Roanoke Nightmare

Roanoke, is not a stranger to the American Horror Story anthology. In fact, for the die hard AHS fans, they might remember it being talked about in season 1. In Murder House, Billie Dean Howard, the resident psychic, played by Sarah Paulson, talked about the 117 people who died and then haunted the Natives in the state of North Carolina. The dead, who had their things burned by the Elder, returned, having been summoned by their talismans. In order for the dead to be permanently banished, all one had to do was utter ‘Croatoan’ which was also found carved into a post at the abandoned colony.

For our story, in season 6, it follows that of Shelby and Matt, portrayed by Lily Rabe, Sarah Paulson, Andre Holland, and Cuba Gooding Jr.. The story of the ‘Roanoke Nightmare’ which is the title for this true crime docu-series, is told by Lily Rabe and AHSR 1Andre Holland, their portrayers played by Sarah Paulson and Cuba Gooding Jr. Also added into the mix, playing Matt’s sister is Adina Porter and Angela Bassett.

After being jumped by a gang and having a miscarriage, Matt and Shelby move out East to North Carolina. They come across this house, which is up for auction. Spending a good part of their life savings and beating out creepy and angry looking neighbors, Matt and Shelby buy the house. Keeping up with the creep factor, human teeth rain down, Shelby nearly drowns by unknown assailants, a pig is dropped off on their front doorstep, Matt’s sister (Bassett) and Shelby are locked in the basement with a home movie playing. The house was broken into, string dolls hung from various points in the entry way, and that’s still not enough to convince Matt to leave, much to Shelby’s dismay.

Shelby’s run into trouble doesn’t end there. After hitting a woman who looks a lot like Kathy Bates (it’s Kathy Bates), Shelby chases her into the woods. Having gotten lost, Shelby finds herself in a web of more of those string dolls that was the last straw and made her leave her home in the first place. She runs back through the woods, away from the string dolls, trips and falls. Out of the woods come its inhabitants, possibly a few of the 117 that haunt the natives.

It’s been said that all seasons are connected. With a connection already to Murder House, what else are you hoping to be referenced or connected? Sound off below in the comments and take a look at what’s ahead for ‘American Horror Story: Roanoake’

Briefly: The American Horror Story teasers have always been notoriously mysterious, but we’ve also always known what each season would be about long, long before its eventual premiere.

Following the ‘themes’ teaser from last week, FX has just launched a new teaser reminiscent of Children of the Corn. It’s classically creepy, but at this point I don’t think that each new teaser is exciting me any further for the return of the series, as we still have no idea what the damned thing is about.

In any case, take a look at the teaser below, and let us know what you hope to see this season!

Briefly: The American Horror Story teasers have always been notoriously mysterious, but we’ve also always known what each season would be about long, long before its eventual premiere.

FX has just launched another teaser for the anticipated, which takes us through the overarching theme for each of the five seasons that we’ve seen thus far. When season 6 hits… it flashes a bunch of random shit that’s really hard to make any sense of.

It’s certainly driving the hype, in any case, wouldn’t you say?

Take a look at the teaser below, and let us know what you hope to see this season!

Briefly: It’s about time.

Following last week’s San Diego Comic-Con, FX has finally debuted the first creepy, short teasers for American Horror Story‘s upcoming sixth season.

Just like every year, these teasers don’t actually have much to do with the upcoming episodes, but instead offer a terrifying reminder of just when the series will return, in this case, it’s September 14th.

In previous years, of course, we’d have already known full well the setting of the upcoming season. This time around, the theme and setting of American Horror Story is just as mysterious as these teasers.

In any case, you can take a look at the teasers below, and be sure to let us know what you think this season will be about!

Briefly: Shane already shared just what you’re in store for if you visit the fantastic FXHibition art installations outside of the Hilton Bayfront at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con.

This morning, we returned to the now familiar territory to experience the one attraction that we missed out on yesterday, and it was definitely worth the wait.

We’re talking about the American Horror Story: Fearless VR, an intimate experience that FX didn’t really detail in the press release, didn’t allow us to take photos of, and an experience that was encompassed in a foreboding, plain black silo. Creepy, creepy stuff.

If you’re looking to experience the AHS: Fearless VR without spoilers, just know that it’s totally cool, extremely well done, and quite freaking terrifying. I attended the experience with our own Shane O’Hare, and upon completion of the VR, Shane noted that what he had witnessed terrified him, gave him intense feelings of claustrophobia, and that he would not go through it again… after also stating that it was one of the best VR demos he’d experienced thus far.

SPOILERS BEYOND THIS POINT!

Alright, now that we’ve got that spoiler warning out of the way, let’s talk about just how cool this experience was.

Six people enter the silo at a time, and the experience takes five or six minutes to enter and exit (so you can gauge your place in the sure-to-be-long line). Inside the silo, it’d be hard not to notice the sleek, white walls and semi-translucent ceiling, which all marks a start contrast from the smooth, black ‘bed’ that those in attendance will lay on.

The FX ‘doctors’ cover you with a white sheet, help you put on your VR headset and headphones, help you become oriented, and once everyone is set up, the experience begins.

Everything is pitch black when an ominous voice warns you that you’re about to experience some of your deepest, darkest fears. The image fades in, you’re looking down towards your feet and laying on a gurney, and at that point it’s painfully obvious that you’re a corpse in some sort of gruesome morgue.

You spend a moment looking around and almost everything is off. The corpse on the gurney beside you has no head, you can see a body on the floor, everything is a Silent Hill level of dirty, you hear flies flying around you. Nothing about this is comfortable, and you quickly feel your skin begin to crawl.

A door opens in front of you, and a silhouette begins to approach. After a moment, she comes in to focus, and it’s the terrifying American Horror Story nun walking towards you, coming inches away from your face before beginning to push your gurney. You’ll notice heads and other body parts in jars as she pushes you down the hallway, and if you turn your head, something that you just saw may no longer be there. The gurney begins to move faster and faster, and you feel your stomach become unsettled due to the high-speed that your brain thinks that you’re moving at.

At this point, things become a little foggy, and I’m not quite sure what order the events take place in.

The nun continues pushing you, and eventually places you in a tiny, claustrophobic as hell cold chamber. It’s extremely dark, and turning your head will only let you see just how enclosed you are. After a moment of extreme silence, your perspective begins to shift and the gurney is suddenly falling into a foggy forest. You hear wildlife calling out, and it’s not long before three hooded figures appear from the fog, and as they approach you it becomes clear that they’re not walking, but floating ever closer.

The figures lift you up with some sort of telekinesis, and then literally burn you at the stake.

A hard cut, and a terrifying clown is standing stationary, just staring at you. It gets closer and closer before finally snapping. He then throws several dangerous objects at you, which are nearly impossible to not attempt to dodge.

The third object hits you in the face, another hard cut, and your gurney is again moving (on its own this time around). You’re now travelling through the halls of the Hotel Cortez. After a moment the ominous voice returns, warning you not to look down. An instant later, and the gurney enters, and begins to fall, down one of the hotel’s many elevator shafts. Though you’re stationary, you feel your stomach churn as you freefall down the shaft, gurney turning and flipping as it hits the walls.

You think that this must be it, but then the elevator races towards you. It stops just long enough for you to see the sharp, metal spikes protruding from its bottom, before it crushes you underneath it.

The ominous voice returns, letting you know that ‘The experience is now over. Please remember that everything you have seen was just a simulation.”

Then the nun comes back for one final jump scare, and the experience ends.

Holy hell that was freaky.

The FXHibition can be found across from the Hilton Bayfront, and is open Friday 10AM – 6PM, Saturday 10AM – 6PM, Sunday 10AM – 4PM.

FX is planning on making a big splash this year in San Diego. Along with planning a live Archer event, FX is also bringing an immersive Virtual Reality experience to any and all American Horror Story fans. However, the VR experience is part of much larger art exhibit!

FXhibition SDCC

At the Hilton Bayfront, fans of FX shows Archer, American Horror Story, The Strain, It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, and Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll will be treated to an immersive experience that places fans in their favorite worlds. As for the horror fans out there, “American Horror Story will curate a virtual reality experience unlike any other that takes participants on a unique journey through terrifying encounters inspired by the hair-raising series.”

Horror and VR experiences seem to be the perfect match and it’s sure to garner some attention during the convention. Lucky for fans, FX has set up a website that allows you to reserve a spot for your VR experience! Starting July 19th, you can book your spot at AHSReservations.com.

As for the other FX shows, here’s what’s planned for the FXhibition:

It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia’s Paddy’s Pub will offer an escape from the heat providing water on tap for fans to stay cool throughout the day. A real bar will house the water taps and consumers will receive a branded collapsible cup to enjoy their drink. The FX Lounge will also be available throughout the day to provide shade and entertainment, where guests can rest their feet in seating inspired by some of the world’s most iconic chairs re-interpreted as notable props from various FX series, including the American Horror Story: Hotel Mattress as a Barcelona Bench and Archer’s Martini Olive as an Oliva Chair.

On display in the FX Sculpture Garden, fans can take advantage of social media worthy photo opportunities with iconic characters sculpted as busts including, Archer’s “Pam Poovey,” American Horror Story: Asylum’sWhite Nun, Man Seeking Woman’s Troll, The Strain’s “Quinlan,” Baskets’ Clown and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s “Frank Reynolds” as the “troll” character from The Nightman Cometh.

Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll’s turbulent rock culture will be illustrated through a dramatic larger-than-life installation, featuring a smashed guitar with broken pieces several feet in size for a life size exhibit.

For more information on the FXhibition, you can visit their site here as we get closer to SDCC!

Briefly: We were beyond excited to when FX renewed American Horror Story for a sixth season back in November.

The series found a phenomenal new star in the Lady Gaga, who won a Golden Globe for her role in the now-concluded American Horror Story: Hotel.

Of course, we all hoped that Gaga would be making a return appearance on AHS later this year, and in a recent interview with Z100, Gaga noted that she would return, though she “can’t promise you how or when or anything like that.”

No details have been revealed about the sixth season of American Horror Story thus far (or which other cast members will return), but we’ll be sure to share the news as it comes in!

What do you hope to see when American Horror Story returns this October?

Gaga

Briefly: Finally. I was getting just a little bit worried that we wouldn’t see Scream Queens continue.

Fox has just revealed that it has renewed the hilarious (and sometimes terrifying) series for a second season.

This time around, the series will be strictly off-campus, and will instead focus on a hospital “where some of the most fascinating and bizarre medical cases are under observation.”

Sounds good to me.

Fox has not revealed at this time which season one performers will be returning, but as Deadline notes, most of the core stars are thought to have multi-year contracts, so it’s likely we’ll be seeing Lea Michelle, Emma Roberts, Jamie Lee Curtis, and many others in completely different roles later this year.

In any case, I was a huge fan of the series’ campy-as-hell first season, and I can’t wait to see where Murphy and crew take a hospital setting (which I’m actually surprised we haven’t really seen in Murphy’s other horror series, American Horror Story).

What do you think of the renewal? Were you a fan of the first season? Sound out below!

Briefly: After a weird off-season with last year’s Freak Show, American Horror Story is back and better than ever with the currently running fifth season, Hotel.

The series has found a phenomenal new cast member in Lady Gaga, who is hopefully interested in continuing her relationship with the series, as American Horror Story has just been renewed for another year.

“With the sixth installment coming next year, ‘American Horror Story’ has unquestionably joined the ranks of television’s landmark series,” said CEO of FX Networks and FX Productions John Landgraf “From ‘Murder House’ to ‘Hotel,’ AHS has pioneered a new television form as well becoming FX’s highest rated show — while also pushing every conceivable boundary of creative excellence and audacity. This is even more remarkable because Ryan and co-creator Brad Falchuk tear up the playbook every year, challenging the entire creative team to come up with something even more spectacular, frightful and entertaining. You could not ask more of an artist, their team or a series and with every new installment they deliver.”

I’ve been a big fan of the series since its debut, and as crazy as the show (and its ever expanding cast) has become over the past five years, I really cannot wait to see where Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and the rest of the crew take the incredibly produced show.

Are you down for another year of American Horror Story? Are you enjoying Hotel so far? Sound out below!

Briefly: It’s been a long time coming, and now that October is here, we’re less than a week away from the highly anticipated premiere of American Horror Story‘s fifth season, Hotel.

Today, Ryan Murphy revealed the completely different opening credits for the series upcoming series.

As always, Hotel brings on an all-star cast consisting of Lady Gaga, Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett, Wes Bentley, Chloë Sevigny, Denis O’Hare, Cheyenne Jackson, Sarah Paulson, and Evan Peters among others, and is set to premier next Wednesday, October 7th

American Horror Story has had a great few years of critically acclaimed stories and performances, and I’m certainly interested to see if Ryan Murphy, the cast, and the crew can keep it going for another year.

Briefly: Another day, another new teaser for ‘American Horror Story: Hotel’!

This one is probably the creepiest yet, and that disgusting looking arm definitely had me cringing for a few seconds.

Hotel, of course, brings on an all-star cast consisting of Lady Gaga, Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett, Wes Bentley, Chloë Sevigny, Denis O’Hare, Cheyenne Jackson, Sarah Paulson, and Evan Peters among others, and is set to premier on October 7th!

Briefly: After numerous creepy teasers, and with less than a month until its premiere, FX has finally debuted the first actual trailer for American Horror Story: Hotel.

Sort of.

It’s a trailer showing off the expansive cast and creepy setting of the latest 13-episode season, and not much context. Also so much Lady Gaga.

Hopefully we’ll get a deeper look at the series before the October 7th premiere, but in any case, at least we know that American Horror Story: Hotel is as pretty as ever.

Take a look at the trailer below, and let us know if you’ll be checking into Hotel next month!

Briefly: We’re just over a month away from American Horror Story‘s anticipated return, and as in past years, the short, creepy, fantastic teasers have returned.

Last month’s lone teaser depicted a gruesome hand ringing, naturally, a hotel call bell (this season’s subtitle is Hotel). It was actually Lady Gaga’s hand, as Gaga takes centre stage in this season of the celebrated series. Last week, two even creepier teasers hit the web.

Today, three further teasers have debuted online, both short as ever, and both showing off some pretty gruesome imagery. I won’t spoil them for you, so take a few seconds with the each below, and let us know what you think!

My absolute favorite thing about Mr. Robot, the new USA series about a vigilante computer hacker on a journey to take down the biggest corporation in the world, is the music.

Reminiscent of The Social Network crossed with a dystopian/horror movie, the unnerving soundtrack is an huge highlight for the series. The series’ composer, Mac Quayle, is a rising star in the soundtrack world. Having worked in collaboration in movies like Drive, Contagion, and Spring Breakers before going solo on American Horror Story: Freak Show and now Mr. Robot, Quayle’s distinct style often evokes the darker nature of music with high-tech, synth-heavy sounds.

A few weeks ago I had a chance to speak to Mac Quayle, recently nominated for a primetime Emmy, about his career, from his beginning all the way to American Horror Story and Mr. Robot.

Whether or not you win your Emmy, what was your first reaction to getting that announcement?

Mac: I was really excited. Really excited. Kind of beyond my wildest dreams to be included with such great composers.

What was your inspiration into getting into music? What did you listen to that made you go, “You know what? I can do this.”

Mac: Well, it started with my parents putting me in the church choir when I was six. And it wasn’t really my choice. They just put me in the choir. And that was my introduction to learning music. And I’ve just sort of been on that path ever since.

Was there anything that you listened to later in life that just kept that momentum going?

Mac: I don’t know about one particular piece of music. I’ve certainly listened to a lot, been inspired by a lot of different people along the way. There’s so many, from different phases of life. But some early influences, I’m going to say Devo, Ultravox, New Order, Peter Gabriel…

Really, Peter Gabriel?

Mac: Yeah.

I don’t know why that surprises me. I think that’s kind of cool.

Mac: Yeah, I was a huge fan of his years ago.

What led you into doing soundtracks and movie scoring? I’m not well versed in music, but I know enough enough that it’s a different path than, say, performing like Peter Gabriel. What led you to do movie scoring and TV scoring?

Mac: In a way, it’s like a second career for me. My earlier career in New York was working more in the music business, as a musician, producer, dance remixer, and I did that for a number of years, until the early 2000s [when] the music industry started to find itself in decline and a lot of the work I was doing was drying up. So I decided it was time to move to Los Angeles, and I had a vague idea of getting into scoring, but I wasn’t totally clear. I moved out here in 2004, and I met some people, and I ended up getting my first job working on a TV show called Cold Case, as an additional composer.

I remember that show.

Mac: It was a great opportunity and I learned a lot, and I found that… It seemed like a good fit for me. That was the new direction that my career was taking and I followed it.

Speaking very broadly, soundtrack scoring is more often than not kind of categorized in two different ways. There’s the character theme, and then there’s a piece for a particular scene or moment. Do you personally have a preference for writing one kind of piece over the other?

Mac: Not really. I’m more about whatever works. For me to do a theme for a character, then that’s great, and if it’s more just about a particular scene or a particular feeling, then I’m all for that as well. And sometimes I’ll write a theme for a character and it ends up getting used for that character and other characters. And it works. And so I’m like, “Okay! It works.” That’s all good. I’m basically about whatever works.

What piece of composition do you think has worked the best, the one that just came together almost flawlessly?

Mac: Well, there’s been many, but recently the first piece of music that I wrote for American Horror Story last year, which was actually what got me the job. That piece of music, something about it, it came together not effortlessly, but it wasn’t that difficult to write and it just really seemed to fit the scene. They loved it. They hired me, and then variations of that piece got used so much throughout the entire season, it became a very useful piece of music and components.

This was last season, right?

Mac: Yes. Freakshow.

Your work is noticeably what I’d call kind of like a techno-thriller. You did the soundtrack to ContagionDrive, I can imagine a hacker out of a William Gibson novel. Even when you use traditional, non-electronic music, they’re very intense and heavy pieces.

Mac: Yeah, I definitely gravitate towards that. On those films you mentioned, I worked with Cliff Martinez, and that’s certainly a bit of his sound and so it was kind of [us] both gravitate towards that.

Is there any reason why you gravitate towards the sound? Or do you just find it works for the material you’re composing for?

Mac: It does tend to work for the projects that I’m working on and that’s part of the reason that they asked me to do it, because they know that’s something that I do. And I also, I’ve just always loved synthesizers. I got exposed to my first synthesizer when I was maybe fifteen. And it just kind of blew my mind. And then I’ve just ever since been obsessed with the synthesizer. I love playing with them, I love how they sound. Now, what you can do with computer technology and all the virtual synth… It’s just an unlimited palette of electronic sounds at your fingertips.

I think one of your most stunning pieces, in my opinion, is your most subdued. It’s in Contagion, when we find out that the strain originated from the bat and the pig. That specifically, do you remember that one, if you remember anything about that … What went into the making of that piece? Because that, to me, … That was just awesome.

Mac: Thank you. And I do have to clarify, that is Cliff Martinez’s score, and I did work on that piece but it’s a collaboration with Cliff. I can’t take credit for it. That piece, I remember it, it was a very strange piece, pulsing, electronic pulsings…

It’s subdued. It’s a reveal. It’s like, “This is what happened.” It’s so stunning.

Mac: Here’s some of the mechanics. This is how film scoring works, sometimes. We had written a piece that was similar to that for another scene in the film. And when we got to the bat and pig scene, we took that piece that we’d written for the other scene, and we put it up against the picture, and it seemed to be a good direction. And so I modified the piece of music to fit the bat and pig scene. So it was not so much like this grand design of, “Oh, what’s the best thing for bat and pig? Let’s write this piece of music.” It was, “Here’s a piece we’d written for another scene. It seems to almost work for bat and pig. I’ll modify it so that it does work.” That’s how that … It’s a little more boring than, “Oh I decided that this pig sound would be really good if I had an electronic pulse.” But that’s just the truth. That’s really how it came up.

What is the most vivid memory you have attached to anything you’ve written? What can you listen to, and remember something that’s totally not related to the movie or TV show?

Mac: When I listen to Drive, that I also collaborated on with Cliff. When we finished that film, we were mixing it at his studio for maybe ten days straight. And during that time he had just bought this espresso machine, and we were… the mixes were basically fueled by this espresso machine. And it began this sort of obsession that I’ve had ever since, with espresso. [laughs] And so that soundtrack is always tied to my love of espresso now.

That’s actually really funny to me. The Drive soundtrack is haunting and so many other words, but to you, you just think “Oh, lots of coffee.” That’s hysterical.

Mac: Maybe not so much during the writing of it. It was the mixing, when the espresso [kept] us going for those long days.

What can you tell me about your time on American Horror Story? I know a lot of fans of that show. What was that experience like?

Mac: It was really a dream come true. And it was a dream that I didn’t even know I had. I had not watched the show before I was hired. It was on my list. I had heard great things about it but I had not seen it. And if you had asked me, “What show do you think will be a great show for you to work on?” That would not have been on the list.

It would seem out of your style, out of your general forte, at first glance.

Mac: But when I found myself working on it, I was about a month in, and all of a sudden it felt like my whole life had been leading up to that point. I was just using all these different skills, and musical styles, and all these things that I had never really been able to come together on a project before. It was great. I was kind of amazed. It caught me by surprise.

The season finale to Mr. Robot airs on USA Network on September 2 at 10pm ET.

Briefly: We’re just a couple of months away from American Horror Story‘s anticipated return, and as in past years, the short, creepy, fantastic teasers have returned.

Last month’s lone teaser depicted a gruesome hand ringing, naturally, a hotel call bell (this season’s subtitle is Hotel). It was actually Lady Gaga’s hand, as Gaga takes centre stage in this season of the celebrated series.

Today, two further teasers have debuted online, both short as ever, and both showing off some pretty gruesome imagery. I won’t spoil them for you, so take a few seconds with the teasers below, and let us know what you think!

American Horror Story: Hotel premieres on October 7th.

Briefly: Well this looks completely ridiculous, and totally awesome.

Fox has just debuted two new promos for Ryan Murphy’s highly anticipated Glee and American Horror Story follow up, Scream Queens.

“Wallace University is rocked by a string of murders. Kappa House, the most sought-after sorority for pledges, is ruled with an iron fist (in a pink glove) by its Queen Bitch, Chanel Oberlin (Emma Roberts). But when anti-Kappa Dean Munsch (Jamie Lee Curtis) decrees that sorority pledging must be open to all students, and not just the school’s silver-spooned elite, all hell is about to break loose, as a devil-clad killer begins wreaking havoc, claiming one victim, one episode at a time. Part black comedy, part slasher flick, ‘Scream Queens’ is a modern take on the classic whodunit, in which every character has a motive for murder…or could easily be the next blood-soaked casualty.”

The show is set to premiere on September 22nd, and with an all-star cast including Emma Roberts and Jamie Lee Curtis, this one is sure to do well ratings wise. As a fan of both Glee and American Horror Story, I can’t wait to see what sort of messed up world Murphy has come up with this time around.

Take a look at the promos below, and let us know what you hope to see in the series!

Briefly: Fans of American Horror Story were beyond disappointed to learn that longtime leading lady Jessica Lange would not be a part of its upcoming season.

Today, fans should be feeling decidedly happier, as Kathy Bates, who has done a phenomenal job in the series since Coven, will be returning for Hotel.

Ryan Murphy announced the news via twitter, simply stating that “Kathy Bates is running the Hotel.”

Briefly: Following the addition of Lady Gaga to American Horror Story‘s fifth seasonHotel, FX has revealed two new additions to the cast, and confirmed on unfortunate departure.

Matt Bomer and Cheyenne Jackson, who both had guesting roles on American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy’s Glee, have joined Hotel in undisclosed roles.

Bomer noted that “I love collaborating with Ryan Murphy. It feels like this world where there are no bounds.”

Sadly, Jessica Lange, who has been a series star since its very inception, confirmed rumours at Payleyfest that she will depart the series, and will not be a part of season five.

Are you looking forward to the upcoming season? What do you think of Lange’s departure? Sound out below!

Briefly: It’s hard to imagine a world where Jessica Lange won’t be the lead in American Horror Story, but it appears as though a new star for the series’ next iteration has been found, and it’s one that I would have never guessed:

Yep, according to TVLine, “sources confirm that Gaga will very much be the star of the latest chapter”, which has been subtitled ‘Hotel’.

This year’s iteration of the celebrated series is also set to be “very different” from its predecessors, according to FX Networks CEO John Landgraf. We’re not exactly sure what that means yet, but we’ll be sure to let you know when we learn more.

Briefly: The Walking Dead is finally back, surprising us all with a brutal and extremely memorable premiere this past Sunday.

While we’re twiddling our thumbs patiently (impatiently) waiting for the next episode to air, Gimple and co. are busy adding to the show’s already expansive cast. The newest addition is American Horror Story‘s Alexandra Breckenridge, who played the young maid Moira in the first season of the FX hit.

She’ll join The Walking Dead as Samantha, an “attractive, strong, smart, charming and articulate woman who also has a vulnerable side. She’s a mother with a bohemian spirit, and a talented artist.” She won’t necessarily be named this on the show, and could even be based on one of the comic’s characters, but we won’t know that until later this year!

We’ll be sure to keep you up to date on The Walking Dead news, but for now be sure to let us know what you think of the announcement!

Briefly: We’re finally just one week away from the anticipated premiere of American Horror Story‘s next tale, Freak Show, and FX has just released a real trailer, as well as the intro for the upcoming season.

The new trailer shows off the phenomenal characters (just look at the two headed Sarah Paulson) and vibrant setting (1952 Florida) of the new series, and really gets us excited to see what Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and their team have come up with.

American Horror Story: Freak Show begins its tale in the quiet, sleepy hamlet of Jupiter, Florida. The year is 1952. A troupe of curiosities has just arrived to town, coinciding with the strange emergence of a dark entity that savagely threatens the lives of townsfolk and freaks alike. This is the story of the performers and their desperate journey of survival amidst the dying world of the American carny experience.

Take a look at the new trailer, and this season’s intro below, and let us know what you think! American Horror Story: Freak Show premieres on October 8th.

The new video is called ‘Twisted Swinger’… and it’s a twisted preview indeed. Take a look:

Yep. American Horror Story: Freak Show premieres on October 8th, and there’s no way it’ll be as sick as that image.

Briefly: We’re finally just a few weeks away from the anticipated premiere of American Horror Story‘s next tale, Freak Show, and following the first real trailer from a few days back (after those freaky-as-shit teasers that is).

The new trailer introduced us to a few of Freak Show‘s main characters without revealing anything about the plot, but FX has just released the premiere’s synopsis to get us speculating. In the episode, titled ‘Monsters Among Us’, “One of the only surviving sideshows in the country struggles to stay in business during the dawning era of television. When police make a terrifying discovery at a local farmhouse, the eccentric purveyor of the freak show sees an opportunity that will lead her troupe either to their salvation or ruin.“

A few new character posters have also made their way online, so take a look below, and let us know what you think! American Horror Story: Freak Show premieres on October 8th.
