Briefly: We were beyond excited to when FX renewed American Horror Story for a sixth season back in November.

The series found a phenomenal new star in the Lady Gaga, who won a Golden Globe for her role in the now-concluded American Horror Story: Hotel.

Of course, we all hoped that Gaga would be making a return appearance on AHS later this year, and in a recent interview with Z100, Gaga noted that she would return, though she “can’t promise you how or when or anything like that.”

No details have been revealed about the sixth season of American Horror Story thus far (or which other cast members will return), but we’ll be sure to share the news as it comes in!

What do you hope to see when American Horror Story returns this October?

Not Guilty. The 9 month trial of The People vs. Orenthal James Simpson had come to a close on Tuesday morning and O.J. Simpson was acquitted of the brutal stabbings that resulted in the deaths of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman.

Based on the book by Jeffrey Toobin, “The Run of His Life: The People vs. Orenthal James Simpson”, FX brings to the screen, American Crime Story: The People vs. OJ Simpson. The show is set to explore the chaotic behind the scene activities from both the prosecution and defense teams of this case. The show will explore the workings of how the defense team got what they needed to maneuver the case in their favor, providing reasonable doubt and thus winning their case.

The first part of this ten-part series opens on the night of the murders in which Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Furman were found brutally murdered. OJ Simpson apologizes to his driver outside of his home, not his ex-wife’s home, and is taken to LAX for a trip to Chicago, which is where the LAPD calls him to inform him of his wife’s death.

The defense team that will work with OJ Simpson is comprised of Robert Shapiro, played by John Travolta, who has all the right answers and very calculated in how he wants things done. Robert Kardashian, played by David Schwimmer (Ross from Friends) is a long time friend of OJ’s. Schwimmer plays Kardashian with a very nervous composure. Disbelief that his friend could do this, fuels the performance.  Courtney B. Vance, who plays Johnny Cochran, the lawyer who historically said, “If the glove does not fit, you must acquit,” is introduced, despite not being on the Defense team. Yet.

sarah-paulson-1-800On the opposing side is Marcia Clarke, played by Sarah Paulson, who was playing double duty with American Horror Story: Hotel.  Marcia Clarke was one of the people who did not know who O.J. Simpson was. To her he was “the guy in the Heinz commercials.” Not the Heisman trophy winner from USC. His celebrity-dom did not deter her from going after him with the full force of the legal system, seemingly on her side, in what should be an open and closed case. There was blood on and in the white bronco that belonged to O.J., there was blood leading up to the house, and the LAPD found a glove at the Nicole’s home and Simpson’s home with blood of both parties. She had everything she needed to arrest him.

The LAPD shows up to the location where Shapiro told Clarke they would be and they, Shapiro and Kardashian were fully prepared to cooperate with the authorities. As was O.J., if he was there.

Where could O.J. be? Speeding down the freeway, with his friend A.C, played by Malcolm Jamal Warner, weaving in and out traffic determined to get away.

To further feed the possibility that OJ was an abusive man and the plausibility that he did in fact kill his wife conversation at Nicole’s funeral between Connie Britton and Selma Blair, who portray Faye Resnick and Kris Kardashian, where the women reveal that Nicole was brutally abused by OJ Simpson and that she was afraid of him and would hide the abuse. The two women are waiting for O.J. Simpson to show up, which he does, and presses a kiss to his dead wife’s forehead.

In most instances, we the audience know more than the characters. In this case, it can be argued that yes, the audience does know more than the characters, given the fact that this takes place in the past and we have already lived it.

With the information that is presented in the first episode, regardless if we know absolutely nothing about the case or watched the news every day while the trial was happening, the writers have made us the third party. They have presented key pieces of evidence that will help us at a later date come to our own conclusion. At the beginning stages, we know very little, and it could be argued that this show, is a visual trial and we the audience are the jury. We have been presented with facts and it up to us to determine if it’s important and does it answer the question; Is OJ Simpson Guilty?

American Crime Story: The People vs. OJ Simpson airs on Tuesday nights at 10pm on FX.

Briefly: Finally. I was getting just a little bit worried that we wouldn’t see Scream Queens continue.

Fox has just revealed that it has renewed the hilarious (and sometimes terrifying) series for a second season.

This time around, the series will be strictly off-campus, and will instead focus on a hospital “where some of the most fascinating and bizarre medical cases are under observation.”

Sounds good to me.

Fox has not revealed at this time which season one performers will be returning, but as Deadline notes, most of the core stars are thought to have multi-year contracts, so it’s likely we’ll be seeing Lea Michelle, Emma Roberts, Jamie Lee Curtis, and many others in completely different roles later this year.

In any case, I was a huge fan of the series’ campy-as-hell first season, and I can’t wait to see where Murphy and crew take a hospital setting (which I’m actually surprised we haven’t really seen in Murphy’s other horror series, American Horror Story).

What do you think of the renewal? Were you a fan of the first season? Sound out below!

Briefly: After a weird off-season with last year’s Freak Show, American Horror Story is back and better than ever with the currently running fifth season, Hotel.

The series has found a phenomenal new cast member in Lady Gaga, who is hopefully interested in continuing her relationship with the series, as American Horror Story has just been renewed for another year.

“With the sixth installment coming next year, ‘American Horror Story’ has unquestionably joined the ranks of television’s landmark series,” said CEO of FX Networks and FX Productions John Landgraf “From ‘Murder House’ to ‘Hotel,’ AHS has pioneered a new television form as well becoming FX’s highest rated show — while also pushing every conceivable boundary of creative excellence and audacity. This is even more remarkable because Ryan and co-creator Brad Falchuk tear up the playbook every year, challenging the entire creative team to come up with something even more spectacular, frightful and entertaining. You could not ask more of an artist, their team or a series and with every new installment they deliver.”

I’ve been a big fan of the series since its debut, and as crazy as the show (and its ever expanding cast) has become over the past five years, I really cannot wait to see where Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and the rest of the crew take the incredibly produced show.

Are you down for another year of American Horror Story? Are you enjoying Hotel so far? Sound out below!

Briefly: It’s been a long time coming, and now that October is here, we’re less than a week away from the highly anticipated premiere of American Horror Story‘s fifth season, Hotel.

Today, Ryan Murphy revealed the completely different opening credits for the series upcoming series.

As always, Hotel brings on an all-star cast consisting of Lady Gaga, Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett, Wes Bentley, Chloë Sevigny, Denis O’Hare, Cheyenne Jackson, Sarah Paulson, and Evan Peters among others, and is set to premier next Wednesday, October 7th

American Horror Story has had a great few years of critically acclaimed stories and performances, and I’m certainly interested to see if Ryan Murphy, the cast, and the crew can keep it going for another year.

Briefly: Another day, another new teaser for ‘American Horror Story: Hotel’!

This one is probably the creepiest yet, and that disgusting looking arm definitely had me cringing for a few seconds.

Briefly: After numerous creepy teasers, and with less than a month until its premiere, FX has finally debuted the first actual trailer for American Horror Story: Hotel.

Sort of.

It’s a trailer showing off the expansive cast and creepy setting of the latest 13-episode season, and not much context. Also so much Lady Gaga.

Hopefully we’ll get a deeper look at the series before the October 7th premiere, but in any case, at least we know that American Horror Story: Hotel is as pretty as ever.

Briefly: We’re just over a month away from American Horror Story‘s anticipated return, and as in past years, the short, creepy, fantastic teasers have returned.

Last month’s lone teaser depicted a gruesome hand ringing, naturally, a hotel call bell (this season’s subtitle is Hotel). It was actually Lady Gaga’s hand, as Gaga takes centre stage in this season of the celebrated series. Last week, two even creepier teasers hit the web.

Today, three further teasers have debuted online, both short as ever, and both showing off some pretty gruesome imagery. I won’t spoil them for you, so take a few seconds with the each below, and let us know what you think!

Briefly: Well this looks completely ridiculous, and totally awesome.

Fox has just debuted two new promos for Ryan Murphy’s highly anticipated Glee and American Horror Story follow up, Scream Queens.

“Wallace University is rocked by a string of murders. Kappa House, the most sought-after sorority for pledges, is ruled with an iron fist (in a pink glove) by its Queen Bitch, Chanel Oberlin (Emma Roberts). But when anti-Kappa Dean Munsch (Jamie Lee Curtis) decrees that sorority pledging must be open to all students, and not just the school’s silver-spooned elite, all hell is about to break loose, as a devil-clad killer begins wreaking havoc, claiming one victim, one episode at a time. Part black comedy, part slasher flick, ‘Scream Queens’ is a modern take on the classic whodunit, in which every character has a motive for murder…or could easily be the next blood-soaked casualty.”

The show is set to premiere on September 22nd, and with an all-star cast including Emma Roberts and Jamie Lee Curtis, this one is sure to do well ratings wise. As a fan of both Glee and American Horror Story, I can’t wait to see what sort of messed up world Murphy has come up with this time around.

Briefly: Fans of American Horror Story were beyond disappointed to learn that longtime leading lady Jessica Lange would not be a part of its upcoming season.

Today, fans should be feeling decidedly happier, as Kathy Bates, who has done a phenomenal job in the series since Coven, will be returning for Hotel.

Ryan Murphy announced the news via twitter, simply stating that “Kathy Bates is running the Hotel.”

American Horror Story: Hotel is set to debut this Fall. Which season has been your favourite so far?

Briefly: Following the addition of Lady Gaga to American Horror Story‘s fifth seasonHotel, FX has revealed two new additions to the cast, and confirmed on unfortunate departure.

Matt Bomer and Cheyenne Jackson, who both had guesting roles on American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy’s Glee, have joined Hotel in undisclosed roles.

Bomer noted that “I love collaborating with Ryan Murphy. It feels like this world where there are no bounds.”

Sadly, Jessica Lange, who has been a series star since its very inception, confirmed rumours at Payleyfest that she will depart the series, and will not be a part of season five.

Briefly: It’s hard to imagine a world where Jessica Lange won’t be the lead in American Horror Story, but it appears as though a new star for the series’ next iteration has been found, and it’s one that I would have never guessed:

Yep, according to TVLine, “sources confirm that Gaga will very much be the star of the latest chapter”, which has been subtitled ‘Hotel’.

This year’s iteration of the celebrated series is also set to be “very different” from its predecessors, according to FX Networks CEO John Landgraf. We’re not exactly sure what that means yet, but we’ll be sure to let you know when we learn more.

Are you down with Gaga joining the series? What did you think of Freakshow? Sound out below!

Briefly: We’re finally just one week away from the anticipated premiere of American Horror Story‘s next tale, Freak Show, and FX has just released a real trailer, as well as the intro for the upcoming season.

The new trailer shows off the phenomenal characters (just look at the two headed Sarah Paulson) and vibrant setting (1952 Florida) of the new series, and really gets us excited to see what Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and their team have come up with.

American Horror Story: Freak Show begins its tale in the quiet, sleepy hamlet of Jupiter, Florida. The year is 1952. A troupe of curiosities has just arrived to town, coinciding with the strange emergence of a dark entity that savagely threatens the lives of townsfolk and freaks alike. This is the story of the performers and their desperate journey of survival amidst the dying world of the American carny experience.

The new trailer introduced us to a few of Freak Show‘s main characters without revealing anything about the plot, but FX has just released the premiere’s synopsis to get us speculating. In the episode, titled ‘Monsters Among Us’, “One of the only surviving sideshows in the country struggles to stay in business during the dawning era of television. When police make a terrifying discovery at a local farmhouse, the eccentric purveyor of the freak show sees an opportunity that will lead her troupe either to their salvation or ruin.“

Briefly: It was just a few days ago that the official subtitle for American Horror Story‘s fourth season was announced, and FX has already begun to announce new cast members.

During today’s PaleyFest panel it was revealed that The Shield and No Ordinary Family (which shouldn’t have been cancelled) star Michael Chiklis has joined the series, and will play the father of Evan Peters’ character, and ex husband of Kathy Bates’ (as Peters confirmed in the tweet below).

Details on the season are still scarce, but we do know that ”Set in Jupiter, Florida, in 1950, Freak Show finds Jessica Lange playing a German ex-pat who is managing one of the last freak shows in the U.S.”

What do you think of the news? Are you excited for the new addition? Sound out below!

Briefly: Back in January, American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy revealed that the series’ fourth season would be set in the 1950’s, and that series regular Jessica Lange would be returning for another year.

Today, he revealed this year’s official title:

Entertainment Weekly has expanded further on the announcement, revealing that the season is”Set in Jupiter, Florida, in 1950, Freak Show finds Jessica Lange playing a German ex-pat who is managing one of the last freak shows in the U.S.”

EW also has the list of returning cast (so far), which features Kathy Bates, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Angela Bassett, and Frances Conroy, while Dennis O’Hare and Emma Roberts are still in negotiations.

Are you looking forward to another year of American Horror Story? What do you hope to see in the season?

Briefly: We’re still two weeks away from the finale of American Horror Story‘s fantastic third season, Coven, but creator Ryan Murphy is already letting details slip on the anticipated next season of the celebrated series.

Speaking with EW, Ryan stated:

“If you look historically what happened in the year 1950, there’s some more clues in that year. It’s a period piece. We try and do the opposite of what we’ve done before. Jessica Lange has already started practicing her German accent so I’m very excited!”

So, 1950, and Jessica Lange is German, huh? I’ve got no idea where we’re headed, but a post-WWII American Horror Story tale sure sounds interesting. What do you want to see next, and what do you think of Coven so far? Sound out below!

Lange

Briefly: We’re just four episodes into American Horror Story: Coven, and FX has already renewed the series for a fourth season.

“Put simply, Ryan Murphy is a master television producer,” said Landgraf. “Time and time again he reinvents the form. What he, co-creator Brad Falchuk and their producers Dante Di Loreto, Tim Minear, Jennifer Salt, James Wong, Brad Buecker, Jessica Sharzer, Douglas Petrie, Alfonso Gomez-Rejon, Alexis Martin Woodall and the entire production team and cast responsible for the American Horror Story franchise have done is nothing short of extraordinary. Every year, they create a riveting and brilliant new miniseries.  AHS: Coven is the best yet, and I have no doubt that the next installment will be even better.”

The network has ordered an additional 13 episodes to compose the fourth season. We’ll share more info as soon as it’s announced!

Are you a fan of American Horror Story? What do you think of Coven so far? Sound out below!

Coven

I come to praise American Horror Story: Asylum, not to bury it.  Well, maybe bury it a just a little. American Horror Story on FX is an odd show for me to write about objectively; I think it is currently the single most entertaining show on television, with possibly the best ensemble cast currently working on the small screen. The production values are top notch, and there is simply no more of an addicting show on television than this one. At the end of each week’s episode of American Horror Story, you just can’t wait for the next week’s installment. And yet…despite truly brilliant performances from everyone involved, there is the feeling that much of this series is plotted out on napkins and never given more than a first draft by the show’s creators. Last night’s episode concluded the season (actually, the series, as each season of American Horror Story is a self contained story) concluding some storylines in a satisfying fashion, while others… not as much.

ohzb5

American Horror Story: Asylum started this season with an alien abduction, a serial killer on the loose, a mad doctor, zombie like creatures, a feisty reporter, and a nun with a penchant for corporal punishment. And that’s all introduced the very first episode of the season; by the next few episodes we are introduced to Satanic possession, Nazi war criminals, murderous Santa Clauses and the Angel of Death herself. Oh, and Anne Frank. Because, ya know…at this point, why not? Toss in the proverbial kitchen sink while you’re at it. It started to become pretty clear early on that all these disparate plot elements were in no way tied together in any kind of cohesive fashion, aside from the fact that they all took place at Briarcliff Asylum at the same period in time. Ok, so in this way it’s like a standard soap opera, where there are tons of story lines going on at once only barely connected. While I can live with that, I still think all those plot elements deserve a satisfactory resolution, and only a few of them receive that on this show. But I’m getting ahead of myself.

But now that the season is all over and done with, I’m here to talk about the good, the bad, and the “somewhere in between” of American Horror Story: Asylum. Warning, there are big time SPOILERS in this article, so if you’re not caught up on the show yet, or plan to watch it on Netflix sometime down the road, then please wait to read this article. You have been warned. Still here? Ok then, let us start first with….

The Good

The Cast On This Show Is A-M-A-Z-I-N-G

As I said, the cast on this series is simply amazing. But none more so than Jessica Lange. Lange gives a performance for the ages here as the strict Sister Jude, caretaker of Briarcliff Asylum, a character we begin the series with despising, then feeling sympathy toward, then outright rooting for and finally, relieved when she finds a small measure of peace. And all of this character growth happens over the course of  just thirteen episodes. Even though Lange won the Emmy last year for her performance on the first season of American Horror Story, she really deserved it for this one. Some of the credit here has to go to the series’ writers (who are better at character development than plot development) but the lion’s share goes to Lange, as fearless an actress as we have currently still working. She hasn’t been given too many high profile movie roles of late, but the movie’s loss is television’s gain. Jessica Lange simply rocks here, and American Horror Story is an incredible showcase for her talents.

It's Jessica Lange's world, and we just live in it.
It’s Jessica Lange’s world, and we just live in it.

But it’s not just Lange, Sarah Paulson as would be journalist Lana Winters is incredible here as well. Her part is equally multi-layered, as we see her go from closeted lesbian of the early 1960’s to the classic “survivor girl” of horror film lore, to sell-out media whore, and finally, the hard hitting journalist she always wanted to be. It’s an amazing, perfectly executed character journey, the kind of well rounded female character that movies and television don’t provide nearly enough of. Having only barely been a part of the season one ensemble, I didn’t know what to expect from Paulson, but she more than acquitted herself here.

reg_1024.AHS.Paulson.mh.010213

And I would easily say the third most important player has to be relative newcomer Lily Rabe, who plays the innocent Sister Mary Eunice, but spends most of her time on the series possessed by Satan and giving a deliciously evil performance. Her storyline ultimately ends very anticlimactically, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that her performance is so much fun to watch. It has gotta be hard to be a young actress and hold your own in a performance with an acting legend like Jessica Lange, but Rabe does so here, and just about steals every scene she’s in.

Lily Rabe might not be a household word yet, but she deserves to be.
Lily Rabe might not be a household word yet, but she deserves to be.

Truth is, there really is no weak link among the actors here, everyone is great. Zachary Quinto, James Cromwell, Evan Peters, Chloe Sevigny, every single member of the cast is giving it their 100%, and everyone seems to be having a blast being their characters. Even the guest stars, like Ian McShane who plays a murderous Santa Claus, are giving it all they’ve got. The ensemble on this show sometimes is far better than the material they are given, but this is to their credit.

The Bad

All The Blatant Rip-Offs

As much as I love this show, the one thing that drives me nuts when talking to other fans is hearing so many of them say “oh, that American Horror Story is such an original show.” That’s the moment I know that the fan is not really a horror movie fan, because AHS gleefully rips off just about every horror film from the past four decades. This series is like a collage of stolen elements from classic horror films that the producers of the show just seem to like, and then pretty much just steal outright. A serial killer who uses the skin of his victims to make a gruesome mask? Sounds like Leatherface from Texas Chainsaw right? Well, here he’s called Bloodyface instead. (it’s such an obvious rip, that the rights holders to Texas Chainsaw could probably sue the producers and win if they so desired.) The alien abduction scene is straight out of 90’s abduction flick Fire in the Sky. Killer Santa Claus? Ever see Silent Night, Deadly Night? And the show is a continuous list of elements straight up stolen from classic horror movies.

And it’s not just visual elements, they like to use music from famous horror films too; the premiere episode extensively used the prom scene music from Brian de Palma’s Carrie, and Phillip Glass’ haunting score from Candyman is used as well. While one can argue that taking all these tropes from horror cinema and putting them into a serialized narrative is itself an original concept, I kind of wanted to see at least one element that wasn’t derived from something else. Having said all that, guessing which classic horror flick the show would rip off this week was kind of part of the fun, one example of how on this show, many of the negatives became positives, if only by accident.

Nope, it's not Leatherface, it's BLOODYface. Get it right.
Nope, it’s not Leatherface, it’s BLOODYface. Get it right.

Plotlines With No Real Resolutions

Certain plotlines that run throughout the whole season are never fully resolved, or just unceremoniously dropped. In the second episode of the season, Satan itself possesses the innocent Sister Mary Eunice, played by the brilliant Lily Rabe, who eventually deposes Sister Jude and takes over Briarcliff Asylum for her own nefarious purposes. We just never find out what those purposes are. She seems to have big plans set in motion, but her character is killed off before we can ever find out just what the Hell Satan would want with an insane asylum anyways. Then there is Dr. Arden, our ex-Nazi mad scientist who is doing experiments on the inmates to create a syphillitic zombie like race enabled to survive a nuclear war (yeah, it makes even less sense as I type it.) But that plot line is ultimately just kind of dropped too. And just why are all these disparate elements like aliens and the Devil and Nazis all drawn to this one Asylum in Massachusetts anyway? The writers seem to have zero interest in answering those questions. It’s like they like just got bored and were hoping the audience would forget.

The whole alien plotline is just one of several that just kind of fizzled out on American Horror Story this season.

The Good/Bad (I Can’t Really Decide)

All The Cheap Shock Value

Man, do producers Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk love their trashiness for trashiness’ sake. On this season, we had Zachary Quinto begging for breast feeding from a captive Sarah Paulson, (and later raping the frozen corpse of her ex lover Clea DuVall) Oscar nominee James Cromwell refer to a hooker’s vagina as her “mossy bank,” a Satan possessed nun raping a priest, an attempted coat hanger induced abortion, not to mention Dylan McDermott drinking the breast milk from a sex worker. While all of this cheap shock value kept the proceedings from ever being taken too seriously by the audience (and actually pretty damn funny in a campy John Waters kind of way) it also made this the kind of “water cooler” show you just had to talk about with your friends the next day. So while I say the shock value is a good/bad sort of thing…I’m actually leaning towards good here. If only for giving me the term “mossy bank” to us to use forever.

In the end it may seem like I have more complaints about American Horror Story than praise, but the truth is that at the end of the day the cast of actors are so damn enjoyable to watch, and the show such addictive, good trash (in the very best sense of the word) that I can’t help but love it. All my complaints ultimately are just minor quibbles that don’t really get in the way of my enjoyment of the show in any substantial way, because the show is just that much damn fun to watch. All I know is that It’ll be a long wait until season three of this series, and I can’t wait to find out just who will come back and what the setting will be. But season two has certainly raised the bar pretty damn high in terms of craziness. And good luck topping “The Name Game” Ryan Murphy. I think that little musical number might remain the series’ highlight.
