TrekMovie reported last night that they have discovered the official title for the followup to 2009’s Star Trek.

The film is to be titled Star Trek Into Darkness. You read that right: no colon, no numbering, just a flat out new title, and an interesting one at that.

Comingsoon was able to confirm that multiple domain names relating to this titling have been registered by Paramount.

No information has been released yet about the film.

What did you think of the first movie? What do you think of this title? Sound out below!

Warner Brothers yesterday released an iOS app promoting their upcoming film The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (iTunes Link).

The free app is a neat experience, letting you learn about characters and explore different facets of Middle Earth. It definitely garners excitement for the upcoming title.

Inside the app were a bunch of new photos. Some look like stills, while some look more like promotional photos. In any case, check them out embedded below!

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey hits theatres on December 14.

On Wednesday we gave you a look at Marvels latest mobile title, Avengers Initiative. The game released yesterday, and after putting a few hours into it and clearing the first campaign, I’ve got a pretty strong opinion on the title.

Note: Avengers Initiative is available for iOS as well as Android devices. The review is based on the iOS versions of the game, though the Android edition should offer a similar experience.

Intro Video

I was hooked on Avengers Initiative from the start. After a short loading screen, Nick Fury brings you up to speed with a very flashy and very sharp looking cutscene. The story is simple: a lot of baddies have escaped from the Vault, and it’s up to you to find them, fight them, and send them back where they belong.

We mentioned on Wednesday that the game takes an episodic approach (as explained in the story, simply too many villains have escaped for the team to stick together, each episode will have you playing a different hero). You buy the game for $6.99, you’ll get to play the first chapter featuring the Hulk, and subsequent episodes will be delivered free of charge. Telltale Games typically takes the same approach, and it works wonders for them (insert obligatory The Walking Dead praise here), Marvel has to be hoping for that same success.

In-Game

As you can see from our screenshots, the game looks great (especially on Apple’s retina devices). Hulk is extremely detailed, complete with a lot of polygons and some great textures. He even shows off some strong facial animations throughout the episode. This carries to other characters as well – each one looks fantastic. Sometimes it’s really hard to believe that visuals like this are being pushed from your cell phone. It sounds almost as good as it looks too, Avengers Initiative features some very strong voice acting and sound effects.

The game may look fresh, but gameplay wise, it feels more like a skin on a two year old title. Infinity Blade was released to much fanfare in 2010. The game was designed from the ground up for touchscreen devices: no virtual joysticks or buttons, just taps and swipes to control your onscreen hero. Combat has you doing the same, tapping and swiping to dodge and block your opponents advances, while you wait for an opening to strike.

Wendigo Fight

Now isn’t all bad: Infinity Blade and its sequel are fantastic, addicting titles. The developer could have done much worse when choosing a game to take inspiration from. Sadly however, some of Infinity Blade’s strongest and most addicting features are strangely absent from Avengers Initiative.

Your Infinity Blade hero is infinitely customizable. Every piece of armor, every weapon, and there is even jewelry to give you magic abilities and stat bonuses. You find items in chests, by defeating creatures, and with credit you’ve saved from battling multitudes of enemies. It makes the game exponentially more replayable as you strive to master all of the possible equipment. Avengers Initiative sees very little of this: Hulk has a few costumes you can purchase which give you stat bonuses, but the quantity and level of customizability is nothing compared to that of Infinity Blade. I’ve finished the Avengers Initiative campaign, and I honestly can’t see myself returning until another chapter is released.

Costume Screen

Another huge oversight by developer Wideload Games is iCloud support. With games like Infinity Blade and Batman: Arkham City Lockdown, I can jump into the game on whatever device I’m currently holding and not have to worry about it: if I play Infinity Blade on my phone while on the bus, I can open it on my iPad later and be in the exact same spot. By not including this, I’d have to run separate campaigns on each device, essentially meaning I’m going to end up playing Avengers Initiative on only one of them

Avengers Initiative is a lot of fun, and the title has some great presentation (though loading screens are sometimes a bit too frequent). The gameplay that Epic Games introduced with Infinity Blade works perfectly here, I simply wish that Wideload could have introduced some of their own innovations to the formula. Hopefully with the episodic nature of the title, they will build on what the game has to offer instead of simply throwing a new character into the same situations.

As mentioned above, the title is priced well at $6.99 (though it is plagued with a ton of in-app purchases). It’s a good buy at this level, had it been priced higher however, I wouldn’t be so sure.

Avengers Initiative scores a respectable 3/5

IGN today debuted a new poster for October’s Silent Hill: Revelation 3D.

The movie is a sequel to 2006’s Silent Hill, which is based on the Konami series of survival horror video games.

I’m a huge of the Silent Hill games (though admittedly the last few years has made it tough to keep saying that). The first movie was not a great film by any means, but I was rather impressed with just how much it felt like Silent Hill. The atmosphere was great, music was taken right from Akira Yamaoka’s haunting game scores, as were the disturbing creatures and environments. Silent Hill: Revelation 3D looks to take a similar approach, so I’ll definitely be lining up for this one (I just hope that the actual plot is better).

Silent Hill: Revelation 3D opens on October 26th. Check out the new poster below! The trailer is also embedded, let us know what you think!

Silent Hill: Revelation 3D

I’m a huge fan of mobile games. More often than not I find myself away from home with nothing but my mobile phone.

Five years ago, that was a bad situation unless you were lucky enough to have a portable console with you. Oh how things change: I can now have dozens of AAA titles in my pocket, on a device that I always have with me anyways.

Hulk

Today Marvel gave us a look at Avengers Initiative. It’s a pretty smooth looking new title that takes Telltale’s approach to gaming – the game will be episodic. You purchase the title for $6.99, and later episodes will be delivered to you free of charge.

Tomorrow, us iOS and Android owners will step into the Hulk’s shoes. From the trailer (posted below) it appears as though a lot of villains are causing a lot of havoc. Nick Fury has made it your responsibility to stop them.

At first glance, Avengers Initiative looks remarkably similar to Epic Games’ Infinity Blade. While I’m a sucker for originality, I’m also a huge fan of that title. It’s perfectly suited for a touch screen, and rather than have to use a virtual joystick and fake buttons, you swipe and tap around, which leads to a much better and more natural experience. If Avengers Initiative can offer the same quality story and addicting gameplay that the Infinity Blade series does, Epic Games’ will have some serious competition on their hands.

The graphics look great, the sound seems solid, and the gameplay is tried and true. Check out Avengers Initiative on your mobile devices tomorrow, and look for our review in the upcoming days.

FilmDistrict has announced that the troubled remake of 1984’s Red Dawn will premiere this year at Fantastic Fest. Fantastic Fest runs from September 20-27. Red Dawn is set to close the festival.

Red Dawn went into production in 2009, but was shelved due to distributor MGM having financial issues. FilmDistrict eventually picked up the film, which is set to hit theatres on November 23. Check out the trailer and a new image below! Notice Chris Hemsworth? He’s sure blown up since this one was filmed.

From the official press release:

RED DAWN stars CHRIS HEMSWORTH (Thor, The Avengers, Snow White & The Huntsman), JOSH PECK (Drake & Josh, The Wackness), JOSH HUTCHERSON (The Hunger Games), ADRIANNE PALICKI (Friday Night Lights, upcoming GI Joe: Retaliation), ISABEL LUCAS (Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Immortals), CONNOR CRUISE (Seven Pounds) and JEFFREY DEAN MORGAN (Watchmen).

In RED DAWN, a city in Washington state awakens to the surreal sight of foreign paratroopers dropping fromthe sky – shockingly, the U.S. has been invaded and their hometown is the initial target. Quickly and withoutwarning, the citizens find themselves prisoners and their town under enemy occupation. Determined to fightback, a group of young patriots seek refuge in the surrounding woods, training and reorganizing themselvesinto a guerilla group of fighters. Taking inspiration from their high school mascot, they call themselves theWolverines, banding together to protect one another, liberate their town from its captors, and take back theirfreedom.  FilmDistrict will release RED DAWN in theaters nationwide on November 21, 2012, just in time for Thanksgiving.

Following the World Premiere, Fantastic Fest will transform the Austin American Legion into a maximum-security prison for the ultimate Red Dawn shindig.  Prisoners will experience mandatory enjoyment from delousing stations as well as free prison tattoos and head-shaves.  Executive chef John Bullington will be doling out wild-game bulgogi, kimchi and piping-hot shots of deer blood while the uniformed detainees enjoy the musical stylings of festival favorite Future Folk.

Adrianne Palicki & Josh Hutcherson

In early April and July, Jonathan reviewed Episode 1 and Episode 2 of Telltale Games’ foray into The Walking Dead universe. To refresh your memory, he wholeheartedly recommended it, gave it a perfect score, and basically told you to buy it if you’re a fan of things that are wonderful. I did… and now it’s time to reflect on the recently released Episode 3… which is possibly the best episode yet.

In Jonathan’s reviews, he called Telltale’s game series “the best iteration of The Walking Dead”. I feel even stronger than that about it: The Walking Dead by Telltale Games is my favorite piece of zombie fiction. Period. It’s also one of the best gaming experiences I’ve had all year.

Now be warned! There are spoilers ahead. If you haven’t played the game yet, do not read beyond this point. Just do yourself a favor and play it!

As we told you back in July, Episode Two – Starved For Help was insane. It upped the ante on literally everything we were introduced to in A New Day. It was more intense, it was more disturbing, the decisions were tougher, and we really got a sense of just how bleak this world was becoming. The episode was stunning from the get go and was full of literal jaw-dropping moments. I’m getting chills just thinking about it again.

Again, the episodic layout works perfectly here. At the close of Starved For Help, I was itching for more, which makes the journey feel so much sweeter when the next episode finally arrives. Long Road Ahead was set to release by the end of August. The end of the month was here, with no sign of the game, when all of a sudden it popped up on PSN! What an awesome surprise! Of course, there’d be many more surprises to come as I started up the episode…

Long Road Ahead

The chapter opens a week after the events of Starved For Help. The group is still taking shelter at the motor inn after retrieving a wealth of food from an apparently abandoned station wagon (which I was against at the end of Episode 2). We can see that the group has had trouble however, as the outside perimeter is littered with arrows and debris from battles against passing bandits.

In Macon, Lee and Kenny are off in search of medical supplies from the pharmacy. It’s here, within a few minutes of beginning the episode, that we’re already shoved into a tough decision. A young woman bursts into the street, screaming for help, hurt, walkers in tow. She’s quickly bit. So what do you do? Do you do her a favor and put her out of her misery with a bullet but risk that the walkers will be drawn to the sound? Or use her to keep the walkers busy so we can safely grab any supplies that are left?

Remember, you’re playing a video game, so the choice should be obvious: do what’s best for your character. The screaming girl isn’t real. She never was and never will be. She doesn’t even get a name. Yet for some reason I care. She’s only introduced seconds before you’re left to determine her fate, but I feel sorry for her, and morally, I feel like I need to help her. And as the decision meter dwindles, I have to make my choice quickly. Again, Telltale does a great job of making you responsible for the outcome… and this opening decision is the easiest one of the episode!

Medical Supplies

Have I mentioned how stressful this game is? I dread having to make decisions in The Walking Dead more than I do in real life. I’m constantly wondering how different the outcomes might be if I had made a different choice. Sometimes, the game notifies me with a message stating what characters will remember which of my decisions and I immediately wonder, was this the best outcome?

I often found myself wondering things like “maybe if someone else would have lived, Ben wouldn’t be giving me a deathly glare right now and maybe Clementine wouldn’t look so sad all the time. Maybe someone else wouldn’t have to die.” As mentioned in the previous reviews, the choices you’re presented with are hard, game altering, and permanent. If you make a poor decision and it gets someone killed or hurt, there isn’t any going back from there and these decision carry over from episode to episode, effecting who is left in your party to help you and providing you with different story lines. For example, I chose to save Doug and not Carley way back in Episode 1, and although he’s been a big help, Jonathan saved Carley and it opened the possibility of a budding romantic interest in Episode 3.

Are there negatives? What few there were in the first two episodes seem to be fixed here. Playing the game on PS3, the only issue I had with Starving For Help were some technical ones. The game was very choppy, sometimes pausing for seconds to load a different camera angle. It was by no means a game ruining problem, but it was annoying, distracting, and definitely did take away from the flow of the game. I’m happy to say that these issues appear to be resolved, and Long Road Ahead was a buttery smooth experience.

As for the story and gameplay, both are further improved. It isn’t long into the chapter before literally everything goes to shit for the group of survivors. There’s a suspected traitor in the group – someone is stealing from the already short amount of supplies. The survivors quickly jump into blaming Ben, the most recent addition. But before we have a chance to resolve anything, the compound is attacked by bandits, which in turn brings in the zombies, drawn by the gunfire.

The sequence does do two things new to the series. You get a first person shooter perspective as you shoot at bandits and zombies from behind cover to try and rescue the other survivors. You also get to play as one of the other survivors for a brief turn. But the protective walls of the motel are down and the chaos forces the already splintered and tense group to pack into an RV, leaving everything behind in an attempt to escape with their lives.

At this point, I’m already stressed out and I’ve only gone through the Episode’s first set piece. I’m on the edge of my seat and I have no clue about how the plot is going unfold. And there’s still the matter of the traitor in our midst. Telltale has done an incredible job in presenting the game. I don’t remember the last time that a zombie survival story felt so fresh, and I certainly don’t remember the last time I was as attached to characters as I am with these ones. Just when you think that you’ve put some distance between yourself and the bandits, and that things may be starting to cool off, Telltale punches you in the gut with an even more intense situation than the one you just witnessed.

Duck

Even moreso than the presentation and gameplay, this is where Telltale’s series really  shines: the writing. As if Episode 2 wasn’t filled with enough shocking and stressful moments, Long Road Ahead doesn’t go 10 minutes without throwing you a serious emotional curve-ball. Literally no one is safe in the storyline and I spent much of my time playing with my jaw on the floor or yelling at the TV. The characters are detailed, believable and three dimensional, one minute acting as your advocates and sometimes as your opposition.

And again, you feel actively responsible for all of them, because they are still the living. To reiterate our previous reviews, the game is incredibly good at making you feel like your decisions matter. Choices have a lasting impression not only in the current episode, but subsequent ones as well. This makes re-playability very high. I can definitely see myself going through the title a few times to see just what could happen if I make different choices.

Train!

Eventually, the survivors find a train, and after some trial and error, manage to get it running. It seems as though they’ve hit a stroke of luck, as it looks like the track is set to take them exactly where they want to be: the safety of the ocean and a boat. Even a helpful hermit who calls the train home has offered to come with them and assist where he can.

Hopefully by now you’ve learned that things will quickly go from bad to worse again… and the most shocking moment of the episode is yet to come. In fact, this heartbreaking moment was the highlight of the episode for me. Just when you think things couldn’t get worse for the group… when you think that things have to turn around, that they couldn’t possibly become any bleaker, they do. And in this moment (you’ll know the one), Telltale puts the gamer in the center of a situation that neither the Walking Dead comic or TV show have come close to handling. It might be the biggest moment of the entire series.

As I stated earlier, I love what Telltale has done here. They’ve taken a tired genre (zombie, not adventure), reinvigorated it, and turned the experience into pure gold. Everyone involved should be extremely proud of themselves, and every adventure fan, zombie fan, and gamer in general owes it to themselves to pick the series up. I wish I could be more critical, perhaps find some negative points. And I swear that I’m not on Telltales’ payroll. But put plainly, The Walking Dead game is a brilliant experience, from the moment it opens, until the second it closes. And I can’t wait for Episode 4 to get another taste.

The Walking Dead: Episode 3 – Long Road Ahead gets a 5/5… easily (just not so easy for your nerves).

More sad news from Hollywood. Omarosa Stallworth, fiancé of Michael Clarke Duncan, let everyone know today that the actor has passed at the young age of 54.

Duncan recently suffered a heart attack in June and it seems he was not able to fully recover.

Duncan had a huge amount of acting credits under his belt. He was best known for his Oscar-nominated performance as John Coffey in Frank Darabont’s adaptation of The Green Mile. His popularity skyrocketed afterwards, having been involved in a multitude of projects in the years following.

His passing is quite unexpected. The actor’s IMDB page lists numerous projects still production. It’s too early to tell how those projects will be affected.

Duncan was well known in the geek world, being involved in titles such as Daredevil, the 2003 animated Spider-Man series, Teen Titans, Sin City, and most recently as the voice of Kilwog in last years Green Lantern.

Rest in peace big guy. You’ll be missed.

Michael Clarke Duncan

With the summer movie season drawing to a close, fewer and fewer titles are released each week, and I’m running out of things to watch. The only movie opening in my city this week was the Sam Raimi produced The Possession.

Just returning from the film, I’m still pretty torn on exactly how I felt about it. When The Possession works, it really works, providing as much scary, disturbing imagery as you can handle, and in a very believable setting. When it doesn’t work however, it really doesn’t work, and pulls you right out of the world it’s so carefully trying to build.

The Possession opens well enough. We see an old woman scared out of her mind, the object of her fear a mysterious box on her mantle, which appears to be whispering to her. She escapes to the kitchen, and returns with a hammer, on a mission to break the box. She lifts the hammer above her head, but before she can strike, she freezes and falls to the ground. She writhes and seizes in disturbing, unnatural ways (think Regan MacNeil from The Exorcist) while the music and sound effects grow and grow in intensity before the woman simply stops moving.

Old Woman

This scene was an excellent and effective start to the film. We get an idea of the power of this malevolent being who either really dislikes old women, or simply wants something else entirely. We’re also introduced to one of the highlights of the film: its excellent sound direction. The score and sound design really add to the experience here, and help to make already intense situations overwhelmingly so.

Enter our main characters in the film, the Brenek family (or what used to be the Brenek family). The couple is just divorced. The family is confused and broken, with the kids moving in between homes as the mother and father try to rebuild their lives.

I find that it’s with the family story that The Possession really shines. After a fast opening, the horror aspects of the movie tend to move rather slowly. Much of the time, the film feels like an intense family drama more than a horror flick, and though it isn’t at all what I signed up for, for some reason I’m okay with that. The family dialogue is well written and interesting, and serves well to get you caring about these characters before shattering your hopes for them.

Clyde Brenek

Jeffrey Dean Morgan (Watchmen, Grey’s Anatomy) gives a fantastic performance as Clyde Brenek. He’s a father with nothing left but his kids and his job, and he gives both the best that he can. He handles the many emotions of the film extremely well, going from happiness to worry, sheer terror to heartbreak, and everything in between. He’s great, and extremely believable throughout, even when the movie starts pushing to extremes.

Natasha Calis also gives a quality performance as Em Brenek, Clyde’s daughter. She starts the film as a freaking adorable little girl before becoming the subject of the box’s desires.

Em becomes smitten with the box at a garage sale run by the old woman’s son (one could say it spoke to her, pun intended). We get one more glimpse of the old woman as the Breneks leave, appearing to be on her deathbed, screaming for her to leave the box alone.

Scary Whispering Box

I mentioned before that the actual horror elements of the film are rather slow. We get a bit of box whispering here and there as Em seems to become less and less connected with herself and her family, at one point stating “I don’t feel like myself”. Em’s strange behavior is typically attributed to the recent tough times the family has been going through, and not much else is thought about it.

It seems like it’s the actually in the scenes that involve the box that I find The Possession works the least. We see it open itself and whisper to Em a few times as she sleeps, but nothing much comes of it (obviously it’s actually the being inside that is speaking to her, but it looks like a freaking talking box and it seems silly). She brings the box to school and ends up beating up a kid who tries to touch it. The scene tries to be extremely intense but I found myself laughing at the absurdity of it instead.

The film runs 92 minutes, and while Em is disturbed for much of it, the actual possession doesn’t occur until over 60 minutes in. When a movie is titled The Possession, you really expect the actual possession bit to take up a larger chunk of it. Instead, when the actual event does happen, we’re so far into the film that it has to quickly jump to a resolution just so we can see the whole story. The film either needed to be longer, or simply get to the point quicker to avoid the abruptness of the ending.

Finally Possessed

When the demon finally enters Em, it really doesn’t seem like it wants to do much until they try and get it out of her. Really, it just seems to turn her into a bitch more than anything. If that’s the case, most of the girls I went to high school with had this box in their lockers.

It doesn’t help much when we get a generic scene of Jeffrey Clyde visiting a possession expert, who essentially tells him everything about the box, including what’s in it, where it came from, when it was made, and what he needs to do to fix things. This was definitely the weakest scene for me. It’s only purpose was to reveal everything to us that would have been better left as a mystery. Mystery’s are good! We don’t need to know everything about the being to know it’s not good. It really destroyed any sense of mystery that the film had built. Thanks for explaining the entire film, pal. Now, if only Joseph Gordon Levitt’s character from Inception had played the expert…

There’s one last bright spot in the film though. The exorcism scene works really well. Set in a very atmospheric hospital basement (for privacy’s sake, and since Em was already in the hospital anyways). The scene is creepy as hell largely due to the atmosphere (dim lighting, dirty and dank looking, hard surfaces making sound echo). This becomes especially true when Em breaks free, and Clyde chases her into the hospital morgue. This scene was extremely tense, suspenseful, and uncomfortable for seemingly everyone in the cinema: strobe lights and laughing creepy children make for a scary time. This isn’t anything that we haven’t seen in a lot of horror film’s before but The Possession manages to do these scenes very, very well.

Now for some SPOILERS.

Eventually, Em is caught, and the demon is returned to it’s prison. Upon the resolve of Em’s possession, everything seems back to normal much too quickly. This event was (cheesily enough), just what the Brenek family needed to bring it back together. Clyde looks happy again, and the very morning after they all could have lost their lives, they began joking about it.

The film closes however, with a car accident involving the vehicle containing the box with the demon. We hear the whispering again just before the credits roll. Looks like it didn’t get what it wanted, and is already trying to break free, already ready to try once more.

Again, when The Possession works, it works well. Tense scenes are very tense, atmospheric, and creepy. The family has great onscreen chemistry and their conversations definitely made you really care and want things to work out for them. As much as I liked this stuff, I came to The Possession to see a possession, and instead mostly watched a family drama where one of the characters is a creepy whispering box.

It was a good effort. The film looked great, and had a lot of strong cinematography on top of the great sound direction I mentioned before.

The Possession wasn’t overly memorable, but being that its only horror competition right now is the abysmal in every way imaginable “The Apparition”, I’m sure its box office numbers will be just fine.

3/5

Years in the making, it looks like the highly anticipated Half-Life remake Black Mesa will actually be coming out, and soon!

Not long ago on the developer’s Twitter account, the following was posted

Today is a Red Letter Day. Black Mesa is coming! Check it out!

The page linked in the tweet has gone down, as has the entire Black Mesa site (likely due to a surge of traffic or possibly the renovations that they mention). The downed page contained the following text:

We’re freaking out over here! It is so exciting to share this news with you!

You can now Download the Black Mesa Soundtrack, courtesy of our very own Joel Nielsen, at the very generous price of whatever you want! Enjoy and share!

In the near future you’ll see our Website, Wiki and Forums all taken down temporarily for renovations.

On September 14th you will see the first release of Black Mesa! This will include our re-envisioning of Half-Life all the way up to Lambda Core. We believe this is a great way to provide a complete-feeling 8-10 hour experience with a solid ending, make our fans happy and help us make the best overall game possible.

We are still working hard on Xen and BMDM, but instead of making you wait we are giving you Black Mesa as soon as it’s ready! We’re doing our best to help bring the immense vision of this project into reality, and we are very excited for what the future brings!

This is pretty great news for any fans of the Half-Life series. The then titled Black Mesa: Source was announced in October of 2004. The game is a free mod, and is a remake of Half-Life with all the power and graphical prowess of the Source engine.

Anyone else been waiting for this? I was 14 when they announced this, and now at 22 I’m finally going to get to play it!

UPDATE: The site is back online at www.blackmesasource.com. The main page features a countdown timer to the games release.

Black Mesa

We just got word a few hours ago that Cynthia Rothrock was in talks to appear in the all-female Expendables. It looks like Hustler Entertainment got the jump on this one however, as their XXX parody is set to release later this month!

Geekscape friend Axel Braun produced and directed This Ain’t The Expendables XXX, set to release on September 30th. It features a variety of adult actresses (as seen below), including Tera Patrick in her first role in over six years.

The film will also be in 3D! Now we’ve just got to ask… “where was our set invite on this one, Axel!?!”

This Ain't The Expendables

I couldn’t help but smile when I read this.

In celebration of Kirby’s 2oth, 536 people gathered at PAX to set a new world record. 536 people, most of them in Kirby garb, blew chewing gum bubbles simultaneously. This beat out the previous record of 304 (a difference of 232).

Record Breaking Event

This was a really cool piece of news to me. I have extremely fond memories of growing up with Kirby: Kirby’s Adventure was actually the first game I ever finished. This record was a great idea and hopefully they can hold onto it for some time!

From the press release:

Nintendo fans found a spectacular way to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the iconic Kirby video game character. On Sept. 1 at the PAX Prime conference in Seattle, 536 attendees gathered together and set a new Guinness World Records® achievement for the most people blowing a chewing gum bubble simultaneously. Participants had fun blowing bubbles that resembled the round, pink Kirby and helped Nintendo of America celebrate, after a representative from Guinness World Records confirmed the official record-setting count.

The new world record added to the growing excitement about Kirby at PAX Prime, where attendees had an early chance to experience Kirby’s Dream Collection: Special Edition for the Wii system. Launching Sept. 16, this commemorative game collection includes six classic Kirby games on one disc, plus a commemorative booklet, a music CD and an interactive timeline that gives players a fun way to explore Kirby’s colorful history. Since debuting in 1992, Kirby has starred in 22 video games that collectively have sold more than 33 million units worldwide. His distinctive appearance and unique ability to inhale enemies and copy their abilities have made him a fan favorite for two decades.

“Kirby is no ordinary character, so it’s not a surprise that his fans would go to extraordinary lengths to mark his 20th anniversary,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “Nintendo is proud to have such a dedicated and enthusiastic following. Between this new world record and the upcoming launch of Kirby’s Dream Collection: Special Edition, it’s turning out to be one heck of an anniversary party.”

According to Guinness World Records, the previous record was 304 participants, achieved by Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Oct. 27, 2010. Participants in the Kirby-themed record attempt were instructed to chew their gum for at least one minute and then blow and hold bubbles for 30 seconds.

Record Breaking for Kirby!

A few days ago we told you about Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes, a new title announced by Konami at the 25th anniversary event of Metal Gear. Konami has just released online the trailer from this weekends’ PAX, in wonderful 1080P HD.

Ground Zeroes is an open world game built in the new FOX engine. As you can see from the video, the game looks fantastic. This has to be next gen! Make sure to wait for the end, where you get to see a tiny glimpse of actual gameplay.

I don’t even have words. I can’t wait for more! Check it out below and let us know what you think!

It looks The War Z, the highly anticipated MMO is finally coming together!

Developer Hammerpoint Interactive showed off some alpha gameplay at PAX today, and even at this stage the game looks pretty neat (if not familiar).

The game takes a similar approach to the popular ARMA II mod Day Z, in that it’s a survival MMO set in the midst of a zombie outbreak. Huge maps and tons of people, and even more zombies should mean that there are always scares to be had, and people to meet up with.

The War Z seems to have borrowed more from Left 4 Dead than Day Z however, as it takes more of a traditional shooter approach than the latter does. Even many of the interface elements appear pretty familiar.

I’ve only put a few hours into Day Z myself, but so far The War Z looks to be a much smoother experience with an easier to understand interface. Day Z in my opinion has way too much going on control wise, and I find myself having to constantly look into the menu for the correct button to press.

Check out the video below! More info on the game can be found here.

It’s nearly time to head back to Greendale!

TV Line has learned that Tricia Helfer (Battlestar Galactica, The Firm) will have a guest role on Community’s fourth season.

Helfer plays Lauren, and will meet Abed at an Inspector Spacetime convention.

Could Lauren be a new love interest? What about Hilda? Will Agent Robin ever return?

Community returns on October 19.

Looks like everyones favorite drug lord is checking out a different kind of rock.

Heisenberg himself, Bryan Cranston is set to show up alongside Catherine O’Hara (SCTV, Six Feet Under, Curb Your Enthusiasm) in the final season of NBC’s 30 Rock.

TV Guide reports that we’ll finally get to meet Kenneth’s family. O’Hara is set to play his mother, and Cranston will portray her special “friend”.

Bryan Cranston is golden in nearly everything he’s in, so this is a pretty neat little tidbit. Maybe we’ll even get a Breaking Bad easter egg or two.

The 7th and final season of 30 Rock hits on October 4th

Sony today released two new TV spots for the upcoming fifth installment in the Resident Evil franchise.

This is the first footage I’ve seen from the film and I have to say it looks intriguing. I’ve always been a huge fan of the games, but have skipped the last few film offerings (Apocalypse left a bad taste in my mouth). Maybe it’s time to check them out.

Resident Evil: Retribution opens on September 14.

The trailer that premiered at Celebration VI has made its way online!

The official press release had this to say about the upcoming season:

The shadow of the dark side falls upon “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” Season Five as the series moves closer to the grim events of “Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith”. The big-screen action, unforgettable characters, and rousing adventure of the “Star Wars” Saga continue, as Jedi heroes face a galaxy of foes. With unparalleled visuals, sound, action and adventure, “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” continues the cinematic saga with the equivalent of a short animated “Star Wars” movie each week. Season Five is filled with explosive action, exotic worlds, intriguing characters and shocking turns as several major players face their destinies as the galaxy plunges into darkness.

I haven’t yet seen the show myself, but this looks damn cool.

Season 5 premieres on September 29.

We’re just a few days from the premiere of the newest series of Doctor Who. Images for the first 5 episodes have found their way online, and give us a taste of what’s to come from this years offering.

Check them out below!

Admittedly, I’ve never seen a single episode of Doctor Who. Do I hand in my geek card? Can I be redeemed?

A few days ago we showed you some creepy new images for the upcoming second season of American Horror Story. Looks like EW revealed some plot details this week too. Sounds like some weird happenings are going on in this asylum.

The plot revolves around an insane asylum run by a group of nuns, and many of the patients that call it home. Jessica Lange (Big Fish, American Horror Story) portrays Sister Jude, head warden at the asylum, who very well may be the craziest one of the bunch if her character last year is any indication.

We’re set to see things that out-weird anything from last season, including Nazi doctors, aliens, and Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine, who says the coming season is “absolutely terrifying. Very gruesome.”

Co-creator Ryan Murphy also let out a tidbit about the future of the series, stating that “Every year of the show is a different miniseries, and there will be several chapters.” This insinuates that every year the show continues will be drastically different, which will certainly help to keep the scares fresh.

American Horror Story: Asylum premieres on October 17.

I remember the uproarious internet applause the day that Fringe’s uncertain future was revealed.

The world was sure it would be cancelled: it was too expensive, the ratings weren’t good enough, it was a great show on Fox. Nearly everyone had prepared for the end of Olivia, Peter, and Walter’s crazy journey. Then the unthinkable happened, and it was announced that another season would be produced.

I’ve yet to watch the show beyond the first season. I have no idea what’s going on, but this teaser makes the coming season look cool as hell.

Vulture has revealed that the Beverly Hills Cop movie series is being adapted to hit the small screen.

According to the article, The Shield creator Shawn Ryan is in charge of the project. Vulture’s sources state that the project will be shopped around starting later today. Some really cool news about the project: in addition to serving as Executive Producer, Murphy will be portraying an on-screen character. The show is thought to revolve around the police career of Axel Foley’s son, while Axel himself is now the chief of police and will be designed around the “Buddy Cop” formula. Based on the property and the names attached, my guess is that it will be picked up quickly.

So, what are your thoughts on this one? Excited to see some more Beverly Hills Cop?

Deadline reports that ABC has ordered a pilot for a S.H.I.E.L.D television series.

Joss and Jed Whedon, and Maurissa Tancharoen (Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog, Spartacus: Gods of the Arena) are set to write the pilot, and Joss Whedon is set to direct (bearing scheduling conflicts). It had been known that Whedon was set to do a Marvel television project, and now it’s officially in the works.

As Deadline states, this is the first order for a live-action series based on the Marvel universe established in the recent films. No characters, plotlines, or information of any other sort have been revealed about the upcoming show but you can expect numerous S.H.I.E.L.D. affiliated characters from the comics. Production is set to start immediately, with no planned release date announced.

So, what are your thoughts? Excited? Glad that Whedon is returning to TV?

33 Days to go. That’s when I can start breathing again after last years Dexter finale.

After a fantastic teaser trailer last week, Showtime has released a new chapter in the Dexter: Early Cuts animated series. It doesn’t reveal anything about next months premiere, but is a cool watch in any sense.

Dexter has had a couple of lackluster seasons (at least comparing to previous few), but I’m excited as hell to finally see the future of these characters after last years insane finale.

The Dark Passenger returns on September 30.

Update: Telltale revealed today that the game will hit PSN today (!), and XBLA, Mac, and PC tomorrow. No word yet on the iPad edition. Looks like they made their deadline!

The Walking Dead game is amazing. If you haven’t yet played it, you really should be. It’s on nearly every console (nearly, sorry Wii owners), as well as the iPad.

Whatever device you choose to play on, the game is a fantastic mix of adventure, action, and horror. At the end of each episode, I’m itching for more. Each of the chapters so far has been perfectly paced, with drastically different stories and events. It’s intense as hell and really gives you a feeling of dread for the future of these characters.

We still have no release date for episode 3 (subtitled Long Read Ahead). Telltale planned it for the end of August, which is nearly upon us, so hopefully we hear something in the next few days.

They have, however, just released a trailer for the upcoming chapter. Check it out below!

Side note: Episodes 1 and 2 are free right now for Playstation Plus members. If you’re a member and still haven’t played, you really have no excuse!

Did you know that a prequel to Psycho was in the works?

Bates Motel is a new TV drama in the works from A&E. The 10 episode first season is set to air sometime in 2013.  Little information has been released about the series, but we do know that Carlton Cuse (Lost) and Kerry Ehrin (Parenthood) will write and produce.

Deadline learned today that actress Vera Farmiga (Source Code, The Departed) will portray Norma Bates. This is the first time the living character will appear onscreen.

What do you think of this? Do you think she’s a good fit for the part? Are you mad the series is even being made? Planning on checking it out? You have seen Psycho right?

Vera Farmiga

She’s at least a lot prettier than the last time Norma was on screen!

There are a lot of Robot Chicken fans in the world. Most of those, coincidentally enough, are also fans of the Star Wars episodes of said series.

Did you know that a new Star Wars comedy series in the works from the creators of Robot Chicken?

Well there is! Star Wars: Detours was announced a few days ago at Celebration VI. No release date has been announced at this time, but here are some clips!

American Horror Story was definitely one of last years more interesting new shows.

The show revolves around a dysfunctional family uprooting their existence and moving to Los Angeles in an attempt to prevent their lives from falling apart.

The Harmon family of course get more than they bargained for, and slowly discover (some sooner than others) that many of their new homes former inhabitants met very tragic ends, and even still reside there.

This series was not perfect. It had its share of issues, but the good definitely outweighed the bad, and I found it to be a gripping tale that kept me coming back for more. Plus a lot of it was creepy as hell.

Great performances, great style, and a great atmosphere were some of the series strongest points, and I’m hoping that translates to this years offering, which is an entirely new story.

FX has started viral marketing for the next season of the show. It started with a series of creepy teasers (watch here), and now they’ve released some unsettling teaser posters. Check them out below!

Season One will be available for rent or purchase on September 25. Season Two premieres on October 17.
