Briefly: Following the film’s awesome debut at SXSW (watch the pre-premiere video here), and an epic premiere during Epix’s Zombie-thon, we’re ready to keep sharing Doc of the Dead with as many people as possible.

The Denver Film Society just announced the opening night film for this year’s Stanley Film Festival, and guess what film it is?

Yeah, it’s Doc of the Dead. Awesome, right? You can take a look at the full announcement below, and if you’re in the area, be sure to let us know if you’ll attend!

The Stanley Film Festival (SFF) produced by the Denver Film Society and presented by NBC Universal’s Chiller, announced today its Opening Night film and several special event highlights and experiences taking place at the four-day event (April 24-27). The Stanley Film Festival celebrates the best in independent horror cinema at the hotel that inspired The Shining. The Festival will host a full slate of films, panels, competitions, and special events – all at the beautiful and historically haunted Stanley Hotel.

The Stanley Film Festival will open Thursday, April 24 with a Gala Presentation of an original documentary from EPiX, Doc of the Dead. Directed by Colorado filmmaker, Alexandre O. Philippe (The People Vs. George Lucas), the film explores the evolution of the zombie genre in film, television and literature, as well as its impact and influence on pop culture. The film features footage taken at the 35thStarz Denver Film Festival’s “George Romero’s Zombie Town Hall Meeting.”

“We are thrilled to open this year’s Festival with a locally-produced film. The Denver Film Society is excited by the strength of the work we are seeing come out of our home state and we cannot think of a better way to celebrate the iconic status of the Stanley Hotel than with a film produced right here in Colorado,” says Denver Film Society Festival Director, Britta Erickson.

In addition to the Opening Night film, SFF announced it will host a series of events, sure to satisfy even the most dedicated horror fans. Throughout the Festival, “players” of the Horror Immersion Game will use multiple media platforms and game elements to delve deep into a mystery/horror narrative that uses the Stanley Hotel and the Festival as a vehicle to engage its participants in a story that seamlessly exists concurrently with everyday life. On Friday evening, Fangoria Entertainment and ShockTilYouDrop.com will bring their Dead Right Horror Trivia from Los Angeles to Estes Park. Saturday evening, Glass Eye Pix will present The Stanley Edition of TALES FROM BEYOND THE PALE with hosts, Larry Fessenden and Glenn McQuaid, featuring two brand new tales performed at the Historic Park Theater in town by special guests with films at the Festival. Additional events include a Murder Mystery Dinner Friday evening, Zombie Crawl Saturday afternoon, and a Big Wheel Death Race on Sunday morning, all at the Stanley Hotel.

“While we are incredibly excited to announce our full film line-up next week, we are just as ecstatic to unveil some of the atmospheric and interactive special events that will immerse our guests completely in the horror experience” says Landon Zakheim, Stanley Film Festival Program Director. “The entire weekend is designed to work as one big dark carnival.”

The Stanley Film Festival will celebrate their programming announcement this evening with an advance screening of the film Oculus at the Reel Mountain Theater in Estes Park. The film will be followed by a post screening Q&A with Director Mike Flanagan, producer and SFF alum Jason Blum and Producer Trevor Macy and an after-party at the Stanley Hotel.

It’s been a while since comic book writer Tom Pinchuk has been on Geekscape! Luckily, we correct that oversight in this episode in which Tom drops by to talk to us about his new comic book Max Steel: Haywire, coming soon from Viz Media! Tom also educates us on the differences in some of the various conventions as Con Season starts up and also about the cultural and narrative differences between Manga and traditional US comic books! Also, when is a character’s internal dialogue too much…?

As promised, one of my Miami Vice artists, Mr. Carl Reed, was in town this week to shoot some promotional videos with me for our upcoming book… so why not have him on an episode of Geekscape to talk comics!?! In this episode, we not only talk about and review the ‘RoboCop’ remake but Carl also talks about his creative process, how deep his love of comic books really goes and what properties he would like to see adapted into a comic. Plus! Is there a way to expand the comic book market through female readers? Will they ever buy comics? And we also give some hints on an upcoming Miami Vice project that we have yet to reveal!

The Raiders Guys are back!

We hosted Chris and Eric back in 2012, just as Alan Eisenstock’s awesome tell-all book was hitting store shelves. The duo is well known as the creators of the ‘best fan film ever made’, as they took seven years (yep, seven) of their childhood to painstakingly recreate almost every shot of Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Here’s more info about the film, via the trailer for the book:

Chris and Eric shot every single scene, and every single stunt from the film, minus one. Eric explains “The Flying Wing Scene.   Yep, that awesome sequence where Indy fights the bald Nazi under the moving airplane.  In our ten years of screenings, people have been urging us to do it.  And so, the idea of adding the ultimate mythological bookend to our childhood saga has brought us back together – the team is stronger than ever.  ”

Now, after 25 years, and as a set piece for Jeremy Coon’s upcoming documentary about the adaptation, Chris, Eric, and the rest of the Raiders Adaptation crew want to complete the film… but they need our help. They would love to hit their stretch goal of $125,000, but their Kickstarter goal is a meager $50,000, and with 29 days to go they’re already over 10% of the way there.

As always, there are amazing rewards up for grabs here, including digital downloads of the film (old and new editions), DVD’s, books, t-shirts, storyboards, even props or a screening in your city.

Check out the Kickstarter video for the campaign below, and let us know if you’ll be backing this incredible project. Have you had a chance to see the adaptation yet?

After a mini hiatus we are back with my friend and fellow filmmaker Marie Jamora! Not only do I catch you up on the 1,001 things Geekscape has been working on recently, but we talk a lot of news! Marie tells us about studying under the late Philip Seymour Hoffman at Columbia as we say goodbye. The two of us tell you why ‘The LEGO Movie’ is the feel good movie of the 2014s and why Paul Bettany is going to make an awesome Vision. Plus, Marie tells us why her film ‘Ang Nawawala’ has yet to be released… and pirated!

Last week the Oscar nominations were announced! There were surprises, snubs and favorites but what’s what? Luckily, I have friends who are smarter than me and have better taste! One such friend is Witney Siebold, former Geekscape writer and current movie critic for Crave Online… as well as co-host with William Bibbiani of the B-Movies Podcast! So after recording a sister episode of the B-Movies Podcast, we sat down to talk Oscars as well as Michael Douglas being cast as Hank Pym in ‘Ant-Man’, more Star Wars talk (as if there’s ever enough) and Geekscape’s very own ‘Doc of the Dead’ premiering at SXSW 2014!

Briefly: We cannot wait for this to come out.

All the way back in April of 2013, we hosted a ‘Roger Corman’s Fantastic Four Reunion‘, which featured some of the film’s prominent cast and crew, as well as documentary producer Mark Sikes. The group was just about to start production on the Doomed: The Untold Story of Roger Corman’s ‘The Fantastic Four’, and today, the first trailer for that documentary was released.

I still haven’t had an opportunity to watch Corman’s version of The Fantastic Four, but have read up on its troubled production extensively, and am very excited for the documentary to release. You can take a look at the trailer below, which features some excellent interview clips with Corman himself, as well as a multitude of cast and crew members.

Be sure to let us know what you think, and if you’re excited to see the full feature!

Back in 1994, legendary B-Movie filmmaker Roger Corman produced one of Marvel’s first movies. It was a feature film adaptation of The Fantastic Four, which at the time never saw the light of day. It has since been bootlegged and leaked, and has gained a cult following over the years. Director Marty Langford has created a documentary called DOOMED!: The Untold Story of Roger Corman’s “The Fantastic Four,”  which gives us the full behind the scenes story of the film’s troubled production and release.

Longtime Geeskcapist Zack Haddad returns to the show to talk news, both personal and pop culture! We talk about his recent surprise marriage and whether or not Shane O’Hare is allowed to stay this summer for Comic Con Tuesday after almost falling on his cat. We also talk about Star Wars comics leaving Dark Horse for Marvel and what it means to the Star Wars Extended Universe! CES is going on and the big news is Michael Bay bombing and the Steam Machines impressing! Plus, Matt Reeves is directing the third Planet of the Apes movie and the Robocop reboot gets not so impressive video game trailer! Also, Agents of Shield steps up but Arrow is still the show to watch!

On the final day of 2013, Jon Schnepp joins me to talk about our favorite movies of 2013… and some of our not so favourites! Will ’12 Years a Slave’ be a shoe in at the Oscars or ‘American Hustle’? Will people forget movies like ‘Gravity’ or ‘Prisoners’? What about ‘Her’ and ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’? As great as ‘Pacific Rim’ was… is it as much geek fun as ‘Man of Steel’ and ‘Thor 2’? Really, this is a super long episode because there’s just so much to talk about! As great as movies were in 2013, we help you navigate your thoughts, our thoughts and everybody’s thoughts!

A Very Geekscape Christmas (2013) by A.J. Santini on Mixcloud

The holidays are probably the most hectic time of the year.  Just minutes after you’ve ingested loads of tryptophan-laden turkey, catastrophic amounts of carbohydrate-based side dishes, and had at least one uncomfortable conversation with an intoxicated family member, the stores begin a barrage of bargains and a slew of sales that force other-wise well-meaning human beings to trample one another and forget the entire spirit of the season for seventeen dollars off a gaming console.  With all the cards to send out, presents to buy, holiday parties for work, friends, and with a growing divorce rate requiring more and more stops to make over the course of the month with families, it’s no wonder we find comfort in tradition.  Whether it’s watching a film, decorating a tree, reading a book, visiting a location, buying a new Nutcracker, exchanging gifts, playing with your grandfather’s antique Lionel train set, or just hearing that one song you only get to sing this time of year, there’s some sanity hidden inside the insanity.

Now, as a music lover and part-time critic, I’d simply love to give you two hours of holiday tunes you’ve never heard of and say, “Check this out!”  But the disc jockey and realist in me knows that no one is going to tolerate that much unfamiliar territory this close to Christmas.  I’ve been discussing the idea of a Geekscape Christmas with fellow contributor Saint Mort for the entire month of December, and it’s taken me this long to figure out how to approach it.  (I’m writing this article at 9:35 PM EST on Christmas Eve Eve.)

I saw a meme today that said, “One song can spark a thousand memories.”  I think that perfectly describes the love/hate relationship many people have with holiday-themed tunes.  We only hear them for a month and then we can’t stand them for the other eleven.  That may also be why it’s so hard for newer Christmas songs to catch on and stay in the canon of public acceptance.  Most of the time, bands just remake a classic quickly to fulfill a contractual obligation, and it turns out to be shite.  And many of the newer songs just mention a bunch of phrases we’ve heard ad nauseum since childhood (trim the tree, deck the halls, winter wonderland, stockings, Santa… there’s a definite formula).

Keeping all this in mind, I’ve put together a mixtape of new and old classics which I heard this season that truly made me reminisce or piqued my interest into thinking we may hear them again in the coming years.  I doubt I’ll have included your favorites, but I hope I have at least put together something enjoyable to soundtrack the last moments of your celebration.  Whatever you’re into, I hope you find something here.  Happy Holidays, Happy New Year, May the force be with you… whatever you believe, we wish it be merry.

Every time Ian Kerner guests on a new Geekscape episode, it’s like a major event… just like the release of ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’! Ian and I sit down, break down Peter Jackson’s second film in The Hobbit trilogy and how it just feels good to be back among old (and new friends) in Middle Earth! Spoilers abound, obviously, as we get right to the thick of it, just like journeying into the wilds of Mirkwood! Also, we get Ian’s take on Sony’s announcement of ‘Venom’ and ‘Sinister Six’ films and we also talk about the Wachowski’s ‘Jupiter Ascending’ and Tom Cruise in ‘Edge of Tomorrow’!

Not all good things can last and while the live shows at Toadhop have been a blast, the studio is closing up and it’s time to go another way. Geekscape will always keep trucking, as you know, but this is the last Toadhop episode for the time being. Matt Raub and Ben Dunn join Kenny and I on a classic Geekscape episode in which we review ‘Hunger Games: Catching Fire’ and ‘The Dallas Buyers Club’, talk about how you shouldn’t be missing ‘Arrow’ and that The Governor has completely reinvigorated ‘The Walking Dead’! Also, Ben talks about his love for ‘Zelda: A Link Between Worlds’, I enthusiastically support ‘Super Mario 3D World’ and Matt chooses the XBox One over the PS4… and tells us why!

Jeff Grace makes his return to the show to talk about his brand new film ‘Folk Hero And Funny Guy’ that he’s currently raising funds for, starring ‘Girls’ actor Alex Karpovsky! Also, Jeff talks about releasing his movie ‘It’s a Disaster’ on the same weekend as the Boston Bombing. How did that effect things? PLUS! ‘Fangasm’s Andrew Duval guest co-hosts and I drop some big news about the future of Geekscape!

Actress and host Marisha Ray makes her much deserved Geekscape debut! She talks about her projects ‘Super Power Beat Down’ and ‘Batgirl: Spoiled’! And of course, because drama should follow any good actress, this could be the end of ‘Batgirl: Spoiled’ since Warner Bros just sent them a cease and desist! What are they going to do now!?! Also, how wearing a spirit hood absolutely makes you less of a man and Marisha and I review ‘Thor 2: The Dark World’!

Also, my parents sit in as guest co-hosts and we talk about writing, how video games as a kid almost drove them crazy and what comic books to read. PLUS! Here’s a clip from the Lion Forge Comics panel at the 2013 Stan Lee’s Comikaze Expo in which my editor Shannon Denton and I talk a bit more about what’s coming up in our Miami Vice comic book series! Is it in continuity? What characters will be included? What’s being changed and what’s staying the same? And of course, will there be any sex? Rampage Jackson himself (who was sitting next to me during the panel) chimes in on that one!

From The Walking Dead to Left 4 Dead and World War Z to Rob Zombie,Zombies are everywhere these days (well, at least in pop culture). But could they actually make the transition from fictional monsters to fact? In this panel, we sit down with Matt Mogk, Zombie specialist and head of The Zombie Research Society, Gavin Hignight from FEARnet and Shawn Kirkham from Skybound Entertainment (The Walking Dead) to talk about the science, history and social ramifications behind our biggest undead sensations, all in the hopes of separating the zombie facts from the zombie fiction (before it’s too late)!

Everyone loves Godzilla, Power Rangers, Ultra-Man, Rodan, Kamen Rider and Giant Robots! And recently, Hollywood has gotten in on the act with Kaiju and Giant Robot films like Pacific Rim and next summer’s Godzilla film. Are these Japanese mainstays the next big thing in American pop-culture (or is it just another Hollywood trend)? I’m joined by working Hollywood professionals like F.J. DeSanto (Cyborg 009), Tommy Yune (Robotech), George Krstic (Star Wars: The Clone Wars) and Gregory Snegoff (Robotech) for an in-depth discussion on the past, present, future and Americanization of Kaiju and Japanese Men in Suit properties. Comikaze is this weekend! It’s been a long time coming… and nobody knows Comikaze better than the cast of Syfy’s ‘Fangasm’, who served as Comikaze interns this past spring! This is a really solid episode as we discuss issues like Cosplay is not Consent with Molly McIsaac, what got us into being geeks with Kristin Hackett and Paul Perkins and Marvel VS DC with Mike Reed! Also, what REALLY went down between Sal and Dani when the cameras weren’t rolling? Plus! Guest co-host Andrew Duvall brings his girlfriend Lisa Best by the show to talk about their new web series ‘The Apartment’! And I definitely have a Fangasm!

Longtime friend Canyon Prince returns to Geekscape, hot off the heels of finishing his first two films as part of ‘2 Guys And A Film‘! This time he brings along fellow filmmaker James Thomas and actor J Michael Briggs! They break down the successful productions of ‘Hard Sun’, which I loved, and ‘Run Like Hell’ and talk about the next step… a slate of FIVE back to back productions! If you’re an indie filmmaker, and even if you’re not, this is a pretty interesting conversation about just going out and doing it!

Stan Lee’s Comikaze is finally right around the corner (better get those tickets quickly)! A myriad of Geekscape writers will be in attendance at the expo, and of course we couldn’t be more excited to hang out with you at the Geekscape Booth (that’d be Booth #610)!

As the 3-day event has something for all sorts of different tastes, we thought that we’d make a list of our own personal highlights from the schedule! Here are the panels that each of us are looking forward to at next weekend’s Comikaze 2013!

If you’re attending the expo, be sure to visit us at Booth #610, where we’ll have tons of shirts available and some freebies (and lonely Shane O’Hare would love to talk to you)! We’ll be there all weekend! Now read on!

Juan Carlos Marquez

Any sci-fi-loving kid who grew up in the 80’s knew the drill on Saturdays; you started the morning flipping between CBS, NBC, and ABC, but then you tuned in to Channel 5 (KTLA) and watched the Family Film Festival with Tom Hatten. It was during this afternoon routine in which I was introduced to the glory of Godzilla. I fell in love with way the giant Japanese lizard monster tore apart miniature cities, yet helped defend the poorly-dubbed humans from the likes of Mothra, Rodan, and Mecha Godzilla.

Sunday’s panel, ‘Giant Kaiju Monsters Vs. Men in Suits Attack Japan (And Hollywood)!’ is an absolute can’t-miss for me, especially seeing that George Krstic is going to take part in the panel discussion (as well as our very own Jonathan London). I was a huge fan of Megas XLR and I can’t wait to hear his thoughts on what appears to be the renaissance of the giant monster movie genre.

Godzilla

The panel takes place on Sunday, November 3rd at 2:30 in room 306AB! Here’s the description:

Everyone loves Godzilla, Power Rangers, Ultra-Man, Rodan, Kamen Rider and Giant Robots! And recently, Hollywood has gotten in on the act with Kaiju and Giant Robot films like Pacific Rim and next summer’s Godzilla film. Are these Japanese mainstays the next big thing in American pop-culture (or is it just another Hollywood trend)? Join a panel of working Hollywood professionals for an in-depth discussion on the past, present, future and Americanization of Kaiju and Japanese Men in Suit properties. These properties have long since taken over Japan. Are we next!?!

Participants: Jonathan London (Host of Geekscape!), F.J. DeSanto (Frank Miller’s The Spirit, Cyborg 009, Insurgent), George Krstic (Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Action Pack, Megas XLR), Robert Burnett (Free Enterprise, Femme Fatales), Tommy Yune (Robotech)

S.J. Borger

I’ve never been to Comikaze before, though I’ve lived in Los Angeles for years. The panels this year look amazing (especially the panels that our own awesome, glorious leader Jonathan London* is a part of).

The panels span an eclectic and wildly interesting set of topics—I could barely decide between some of them. That being, said, I narrowed it down from ‘all of them!’ since I couldn’t seem to find a handy TARDIS or a Time Turner anywhere.

My (current, to be updated at any time) list of must-see panels:

The Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Panel: because, well, the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary special—and the mysterious ‘special guests.”  Such a tease, Comikaze, such a tease! – Friday, 4PM, Room 306AB.

The Nerdist Writer’s Panel: Comic Book Edition; I’m a fan of The Nerdist podcast and comic books, so this was basically a done deal. I hope Ben Blacker doesn’t think I’m stalking him, though, since I just realized I’m attending ALL of his panels if I can. – Saturday, 10:30AM, 304ABC.

Icon: Bruce Campbell. I shouldn’t even have to explain this. – Saturday, 1PM, Hot Topic Main Stage.

Blizzard Storytelling: From the corruption of Kerrigan to managing to (by the skin of their teeth) write in Panda Bears and Aliens as beings consistent with their world, Blizzard Entertainment is one of the foremost storytellers of our digital age.  I’m looking forward to insights from the minds behind the stories. – Saturday, 3PM, Room 306AB.

In Defense Of: A panel defending the truly ludicrous choices sometimes made in comics, gaming and film (the ones that made you cock your head and say ‘Wait, what? How? Why would you do that?’…for example, all of GI Joe: Retaliation). – Saturday, 4PM, Room 301A.

The Thrilling Adventure Hour: Enough said. Seriously, I’d watch Acker, Blacker, Paul F Tompkins, Marc Evan Jackson, Joshua Malina, Busy Philips and Mark Gagliardi read from the phone book. If they could find one, I guess. It’s not really a great saying, anymore, is it? So um…I’d watch them read from the ITunes user agreement. – Saturday, 5:30PM, Room 308AB.

That works better.

Writing Genre TV: A panel of writers from hit shows like The Walking Dead, Warehouse 13, Alphas, Justified and Once Upon a Time In Wonderland discuss what it’s like to work in genre TV. – Sunday, 3:30PM, Room 306AB.

Zombies! Everything You Wanted To Know But Were Too Alive To Ask! Zombie science, history, fiction and fact. Where else would I be on a Sunday? – Sunday, 4PM, Room 304ABC.

* I take cash or paypal, Jonathan.**

** You’ll take a pass to Comikaze is what you’ll take! – Jonathan

anyone have one of these that I can borrow?
anyone have one of these that I can borrow?

Shane O’Hare

This is my FIRST Comikaze convention. I’ve been a huge fan of the expo and organizaiton (DJing their Comic Con party didn’t have anything to with that praise :P) and have always wanted to go. This year, the planets aligned perfectly and I was able to get off work to join in on the fun!

This being my first trip to Comikaze I really want to check out the booths and the main floor, I love seeing how cons other than SDCC stack up. I also really can’t wait to get to work at our very own Geekscape booth (booth 610) as well!

The Pacific Rim (Friday, 2PM, Room 306AB) and Sharknado (Friday, 4:30, Hot Topic Main Stage) panels on day one are a must see. The Lion Forge panels (Saved By The Bell is Saturday, 11AM, Room 306ABKnight Rider, Airwolf, Miami Vice & More on Sunday, 12PM, Room 301Aare also a must attend as all their newest books are top notch and I am super excited for all of them.

Come Sunday I find myself stuck in a conundrum. Do I stay at Comikaze or head on down to Anaheim and join the Mega 64 Boyz for their annual Gamedays meetup at Disneyland? Decisions…decisions.

Either way, I am very excited to be attending Comikaze, especially since it’s in LA! My sister better get the couch ready cause baby brudda is coming for a visit!

This will be my second year attending Comikaze, and there are definitely a few panels/films that I’m really excited to see!

I’m looking forward to the Geek Girls: Sexism Within the Geek Subculture (Friday, 1:30PM, Room 301B) panel because it has been a fairly common discussion topic lately. The Adapting Sherlock Holmes (Friday, 3:30PM, Room 301B) panel sounds cool since I just recently started watching the show (yes, I’m a little behind on some shows because I generally don’t watch live TV and have to rely on Netflix.) The Dollar Baby Film Festival (Saturday, 9AM, Screening Room 411) on Saturday also sounds awesome because it will be short films based on Stephen King stories and I love good horror stories. There’s a Grimm Fairy Tales Animated Pilot (Saturday, 11:30AM, Room 308AB)I am really excited about because I saw their presentation at the Long Beach Comic Con and I’m stoked to see their final product. And, of course, Weird Al will be at Comikaze this year. I’ve seen him in concert at least three times and he never fails to entertain. 🙂 I’m also curious to see Sweethearts of the Galaxy (Sunday, 10AM, Room 304ABC) because I interviewed those two lovely ladies not so long ago and their show seems really fun. There’s also several horror panels I wouldn’t miss such as a Ghosts, Bigfoot and Beyond: Paranormal TV (Sunday, 1PM, Room 304ABC) because who doesn’t enjoy a little paranormal in their life?! And last, but not least, there will be a screening of Legend of the Red Reaper (Sunday, 2:30PM, Screening Room 411) which I have been hearing about for quite some time so I’m really looking forward to seeing it!

I absolutely cannot wait to get back down to Los Angeles and head to Comikaze! Of course I’m beyond excited to see all of my fellow writers again (and to meet some new ones too), and also participate in my very first 5K. The whole reason that I’m going down is for the expo however, and here’s what I’m most looking forward to:

It’s called Stan Lee’s Comikaze, so of course I need to meet Stan at some point. I picked up a copy of The Amazing Spider-Man #252 (first appearance of the black suit) at SDCC, and I would love to have him sign it. That being said, getting a photo with Stan the Man would literally make my life, as I’ve idolized the guy since before I could speak! He did say good morning to me at SDCC, but I need more!

I was a big fan of Pacific Rim, so as Shane said up above, the From Robots to Monsters: A Look Into Pacific Rim and Godzilla (Friday, 2PM, Room 306AB) panel is a must see for me. I’m also looking forward to the Full Time Creative on a Part Time Schedule (Friday, 2:30PM, Room 301B) discussion should be an interesting one. Between a full-time day job and my work for Geekscape, I find a hard time doing any of the creative writing that I used to love doing. Maybe this panel will offer some tips on how to find the time?

Later that day, I’ll be headed to the Making A Comic Step-By-Step (Friday, 4PM, Room 304ABC). This should go hand-in-hand with the previous panel, as it’s something that I’ve been interest in for as long as I can remember, but have simply never found the time to do. I’ll also want to check out the Fangasm: The Interns Reunite (Friday, 7PM, Hot Topic Main Stage) as I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the show (which ends tonight) and I’m sure that there’ll be plenty of laughs at the panel.

All that stuff, and that’s just the first day! I’m also looking forward to:

-The Death of ‘Superman Lives’: What Happened? – (Saturday, 2PM, Room 304ABC).
Inspector Spacetime: The Panel – (Saturday, 6PM, Room 304ABC)
-The Writer’s Journey: Breaking Into Comic Book and Hollywood Scriptwriting – (Sunday, 10AM, Room 306AB)
-Meet The Actor’s From ‘Grand Theft Auto V’ – (Sunday, 11:30AM, Room 306AB)
-So You Wanna Start A Podcast – (Sunday, 5PM, Room 308AB)

I’m sure that I’ll find even more to attend once I get to the expo, but these are the events that immediately stood out to me!

It's my mission to meet this guy.
It’s my mission to meet this guy.

Our very own Jonathan London will also be hosting (and participating in) a few of Comikaze’s most prestigious panels. You know you’ll want to be in attendance for those. The panels are:

– Icon: Edward James Olmos – (Friday, 5:30PM, Hot Topic Main Stage)

The Emmy and Golden Globe-winning, Academy Award-nominated legend talks to the Comikaze crowd about his many appearances in some of the biggest and most recognizable of film and television projects.

– Lion Forge Comics Presents: Saved By The Bell – (Saturday, 11AM, Room 306AB)

It’s time to return to Bayside High! Host Jonathan London will take you on a nostalgic look at the world of Saved by the Bell and he’s bringing along some special guests to help him out. Mr. Belding himself, Dennis Haskins, will be one board to reminisce on the iconic shows past history. Joining America’s favorite principal are writer Joelle Sellner and artist Chynna Clugston who’ll be helming Saved by the Bell’s future with an exclusive look into the new comic coming from Lion Forge Comics.

Participants: Jonathan London (Geekscape), Dennis Haskins (Saved By The Bell), Joelle Sellner (SBTB Comic, Jackie Chan Adventures, Teen Titans, Wonderous), Chynna Clagston (Blue Monday, Queen Bee), Adam Staffaroni (editor)

– Lion Forge Comics Presents Knight Rider, Airwolf, Miami Vice, and Much Much More! – (Sunday, 12PM, Room 301A)

Lion Forge Comics has been hard at work bringing you the best titles in comics and you have a chance to hear first-hand from its creative team about its plans for some of your favorite TV shows from the 80s and other  Lion Forge Projects. Also get an exclusive first look at our new project with writer Cullen Bunn (Sixth Gun & Deadpool). This is not your average boring publisher panel filled with press releases and boring home movies. Excitement, Adventure, Giveaways and more Surprises await you at the Lion Forge Comics panel!

Participants: Geoff Thorne (Leverage, Ben10), Brandon Easton (Thundercats, Shadowlaw), Jonathan London (Geekscape), David Gorden (Catalyst Prime: Accel, Catalyst Prime: Quincredible), Jason Johnson (Wetworks), Lorenzo Lizana (Rampage Jackson: Street Soldier), Carl Reed (Miami Vice)

– Giant Kaiju Monsters Vs. Men In Suits Attack Japan (And Hollywood)! – (Sunday, 2PM, Room 306AB)

DeSanto (Frank Miller’s The Spirit, Cyborg 009, Insurgent), George Krstic (Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Action Pack, Megas XLR), Robert Burnett (Free Enterprise, Femme Fatales), Tommy Yune (Robotech).

Now it’s your turn! Be sure to let us know what you’re excited to see at next week’s Comikaze! You can find the programming schedule here, and head here if you haven’t bought your tickets yet!

The next game in the Batman Arkham series hits next week with ‘Batman: Arkham Origins’! But this time there are some changes! Developer Rocksteady Games has given way to Warner Brothers Montreal and both Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill have been replaced as Batman and The Joker! Luckily, I think we’re in really good hands, as new Batman voice actor Roger Craig Smith can attest to on this episode as he talks about becoming the Dark Knight, the difference in playing him as opposed to Captain America on Disney’s ‘Avengers Assemble’ and how he got into voice over work to begin with! There’s also a ton more, include a call from ‘Airwolf’ writer David Gorden to talk about the new comic’s release and guest co-host Andrew Duvall from SyFy’s ‘Fangasm’!

If you’re going to NYCC 2013 (like we are), let’s meet up!

Sure, there’ll be plenty of things going on at the Javits Center during the day, but what about meeting some of your Geekscapists for dinner and a hang out once the Con ends?

Here are the details:

Friday, October 11th!

We are meeting at Lansdowne Road! They’re a few blocks North of the Con, a short walk or shorter taxi ride!

599 10th Ave  New York, NY 10036

lansdowne-party-room-4

Check out their menu (it’s affordable and good).

Dinner – 7pm (everyone handles their own tab)

Hanging Out – 8pm and on!

It’s early, so you’ll have plenty of time to visit the parties after Matt Kelly regales you with endless stories about the crappiest VHS movies in his collection!

A packed episode! In the first half hour, we have the cast of the hilarious ‘Bitter Party of Five’! If you haven’t watched an episode yet, go to Blip.tv and check it out. They are amazing! Mary Birdsong, Greg Cromer, Tricia O’Kelley and Romy Rosemont talk failed pilots, the ups and down of being a Hollywood actor and spider impregnation… don’t worry… it makes perfect sense!

Then, in the second half of the show, ‘Zero Charisma’ directors Katie Graham and Andrew Matthews drop by with star Sam Eidson to talk role playing games, finally having the movie released and the sincerity of being a geek! I would say that’s a pretty action packed episode right there!

‘Zero Charisma’ finally comes to VOD this coming Tuesday!

Briefly: Back in June we learned that Monkey Island creator Ron Gilbert and Double Fine Productions’ collaboration, The Cave, was headed to iOS. Today, we learned just when we’ll able to get our greasy fingers on it.

The Cave first launched in January of this year. It’s an adventure/puzzle title with all of the quirks that you’d expect from Gilbert and Double Fine, and right from the game’s first trailer, I was sold. It looks beautiful, it sounds great, and it’s said to be hilarious. Somehow, I still haven’t had a chance to play the game. Maybe once it’s on the device that’s always in my pocket?

Sega revealed earlier today that The Cave will launch on iOS this Thursday. The Universal app will cost a cool $4.99 / £2.99/ €4.49, and should be well worth the asking price.

Take a look at the character trailer for The Cave below, and let us know if you’ll be picking it up (or if you’ve already played it)!

Last week, Brian Tee got us rooting for ‘Mortal Kombat: Legacy 2′ as Liu Kang! Now, on the day of the new series’ release on Machinima, director Kevin Tancharoen joins us in the studio to talk video games, Mortal Kombat and Hollywood adaptations! On top of that, our friend Andrew Duvall from SyFy’s ‘Fangasm’ joins me as as co-host to talk about Geek Sincerity VS Reality TV! This is a great episode, which includes talk of video game adaptations we’d love to see, the best parts of GTA 5 and giant Kaiju monsters! PLUS! The challenge of bringing Mortal Kombat to screen (of course)!

I’m not sure if I should admit this or not, but here goes. I am an avid watcher of Once Upon a Time.

Yes, that’s right. Snow White. Rumpelstiltskin. The Evil Queen.

I could lie and say that I started because of the incredibly hot actress who plays Red Riding Hood, but that’s not it. The truth of it is, I got married. My wife liked the show and wanted to start watching season two last Fall together. And season one was on Netflix. I figured it couldn’t hurt.

So I watched the first episode. And the second and third. All in one sitting. Sure, episode one wasn’t that exciting, but as I got to know the characters, I became interested in the show. It actually reminded me of a graphic novel I love, Fables. Actually, the wife and I were talking last week about how surprising it was that the creators of Fables didn’t sue Once Upon a Time, since the ideas were so similar. Also, it’s fun to try to guess which traditional storybook character any new arrivals might be.

But now the question is, do I open the door to the new spin-off called Once Upon a Time in Wonderland? Do I commit another hour to a similar show? The premise of the spin-off is simple; in the real world, Alice is thought insane because of her stories of Wonderland, but love forces her to return to the world she once left. The trailer makes her look a bit kickass, with a fight scene where she takes out a few people. Another reason for me to watch is that it’s written by one of the writers of Lost, Adam Horowitz (Lost, Once Upon a Time). Plus, isn’t that Sayid (from Lost) in the trailer? It sure is – he plays Jafar.

Also included are John Lithgow as The White Rabbit and a relatively new face in Sophie Lowe (Roadkill, Blame) as Alice.

I will probably give Wonderland a chance, at least an episode or two before I decide. Or maybe I’ll leave it up to the wife. After all, she got into The Walking Dead and Doctor Who for me…I should definitely reciprocate.

What about you? Do you watch Once? Will you give Wonderland a chance?

Watch the trailer here, and sound out below! Once Upon A Time In Wonderland premieres October 10th:

Actor Brian Tee is the latest actor to take on the role of Liu Kang in Machinima’s ‘Mortal Kombat: Legacy’ Season 2. And this summer, we saw Brian get tossed out a window by Hugh Jackman in ‘The Wolverine’. So of course I jumped at the chance to have him on the show to talk comics and video games! In this episode, we talk about how his character D.K. in ‘Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift’ was actually a good guy, growing up as a football player and discovering your inner theater geek and how Brian used to play Mortal Kombat in the pizza shop where he worked. And of course, what is it like to step into the shoes of a beloved video game character? PLUS! I talk some GTA V! How is it already the best GTA game?

Destin Pfeff and Rachel Federoff are best known as castmembers of the reality show ‘Millionaire Matchmaker’, but they’re actually huge, passionate geeks. This episode, they bring to Geekscape their specific sense of style, educate me on the ins and outs of Cyberlesque and talk about growing up geeks. Destin gives his opinions on the new Robocop trailer and we discuss the plus and minuses of Hollywood remakes. Also, what advice would they give to geeks out there, searching for some love? Plus! Ben Dunn hangs out in the studio to find out if he and I can pull off some new style accessories (I bet you can bet the answers to that one)!
