Briefly: We were all pretty excited back in February when out of the blue NBC announced that they were bringing Heroes back for a 12-episode miniseries called Heroes Reborn.

Since then, we haven’t heard too much (anything) about the project, aside from the fact that the series would feature both new and returning characters. Today we got word of our first returning character: Jack Coleman as Noah Bennet / HRG.

Details are still scarce on the miniseries, but we’ll be sure to keep you updated as we learn more. What other Heroes alumni would you like to see return for Reborn? Sound out below!

After Disney Infinity 2.0 was announced last month, questions were running rampant as far as what Marvel and Disney characters would make the cut. Well, thanks to Walmart, we might have the answer… only months before it was intended.

Thanks to a recent preorder listing, the figures shown on the monster retailer’s website matches many of the figures that were recently confirmed at E3, bringing some credibility to the listing. From Guardians of the Galaxy to the recently announced Big Hero 6 and a few surprises in between, it looks like we’ll have a ton of new figures to collect throughout the next year and beyond.

If you don’t want to be spoiled, stop reading here. For everyone else, below are the list of figures that might make their way onto store shelves for the next Infinity release.

-Stitch

-Donald Duck

-Tinkerbell

-Hiro and Baymax from Big Hero 6

-Drax

-Rocket Raccoon

-A Guardians of the Galaxy Play Set, including Star Lord and Gamora

This is in addition to Groot, who was already announced, rounding out the Guardians. When including the recently unveiled Merida from Brave and Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty, (who’s likely in to promote the DVD release of her self titled film when it inevitably hits in a few months), the roster is getting pretty huge, which means a shrinking wallet for us!

While seeing a GotG or Big Hero Six set isn’t surprising in the slightest, seeing characters like Tinker Bell and Donald Duck are welcomed surprises, especially considering Goofy can’t be following too far behind. The game desperately needs more Disney characters, so it’s good to see that they won’t get completely overshadowed by the inclusion of Marvel into the franchise. Yet, there are still some glaring omissions, namely Ferb, who was teased back when Fineas and Agent P were shown for the original, but has yet to be revealed, and Aladdin, who is strangely absent for a game that contains Agrabah guards, the Cave of Wonders, and even Abu in the form of an elephant. I wouldn’t be surprised if we’re just scratching the surface of what 2.0 will have to offer.

So what do you think, Geekscapists? Do you like what you see so far? And who else do you want to see make the cut? Check out the latest reveal trailer and let us know what you want to see from the upcoming sequel.

The comics industry has gone through a pretty big resurgence in the past few years. Sure, big budget superhero films like The Dark Knight and The Avengers has led to an increased popularity in comics merchandizing and previously smaller events like the San Diego Comic Con. And that’s just talking about the Big 2. But what about the smaller indie publishers? Image Comics leads the pack, with the explosion of all things Walking Dead, and Dark Horse, BOOM! and IDW aren’t far behind with their mix of licensed books and creator owned titles.

But does all this explosive growth in ideas trickle down to actual sales or are publishers finding themselves fighting each other over increasingly divided slices of the same sized pie? Or does the influx of new fans from the TV and big screen just mean that new people are buying The Walking Dead and Spider-Man while smaller titles are left promising something new to the older comic fans who’ve grown tired of the same old books?

And now that the indie comics publishers are shaking hands and making deals with Hollywood… are they still perceived as indie? More importantly, where does that leave truly indie creators? The ones who paid for their own books to be made with their own money or crowd funding campaigns? These are the writers and artists who toil in thankless jobs during the day just to create comics at night and on weekends in the hopes of breaking out! Does the popularity and sales of The Walking Dead and Avengers ever trickle down to them? Or do they find themselves further buried under the noise and attention that those properties generate, working even harder to find readers than they would have a decade ago, when indie creators like Robert Kirkman and Brian Michael Bendis were using their indie ideas to launch mainstream careers?

I’d like to highlight a book that reminds me of the days of discovering Powers or Scott Pilgrim early on in the comic shop shelves. It’s called Buffalo Speedway and is the creation of Yehudi Mercado, an artist and fellow writer that I recently befriended (because we’re both from Austin) who gave me his book at WonderCon with the stipulation ‘it takes place in Texas so just let me know what you think.’ And on a recent visit back to Texas, I brought Buffalo Speedway with me so I could tell Yehudi exactly that, you know, creator to creator. And I think is that Buffalo Speedway is fucking great.

BuffaloSpeedway_Pia

This is a fun and surprising 6 part series that really charms the hell you in the same way that Scott Pilgrim did as a sincere love letter to video games and young love. With Buffalo Speedway however, the love letter is being written and delivered to those times in our lives that we’d probably rather forget: the hours spent wiling away at our first jobs. For some of us it was a Blockbuster video, a fast food restaurant or a receptionists desk. Buffalo Speedway revolves around a similar mundane location, a pizza restaurant and it’s team of unique pizza delivery drivers. But this just happens to be THE BIGGEST PIZZA DELIVERY DAY OF ALL TIME!

If I compare Buffalo Speedway to Scott Pilgrim it’s with good reason. It definitely has the same charm, manic energy and loud, unique characters that Scott Pilgrim did. Here, however, you get a story about being stuck in your mid-20s, on the fence between moving on from the safety of adolescence to the uncertain responsibility of adulthood… and you’re already in your mid-20s. This adds a level to desperation to Buffalo Speedway’s main character Figgs that isn’t present in books like early Spider-Man (or again, Scott Pilgrim). When the events of the book unfold, they really feel larger than life and with huge consequences. The fact that the book all takes place in one day, like a hyperactive, action packed version of Clerks, makes it all the more important.BuffaloSpeedway_SupermanAnd the book is funny, really damn funny. I found myself laughing out loud a ton as the story bounces from character to character and through ridiculous situations like sabotaging rival pizza restaurant drivers, banging the hungry housewife before the husband comes home and escaping a high speed police chase. The events all take place back on June 17th, 1994 in Houston, while the Rockets face the Knicks in the Finals and OJ Simpson makes his high speed chase down the 5 in California. Yehudi does a really good job of laying these events into the backdrop but then having them resonate with each of the characters. Not only does having a home team in the NBA Finals mean that the pizzas will be flying out the door, but the pressure cooker situation on the freeway results in complete insanity for our team of drivers.

BuffaloSpeedway_Dragon

Most of the characters are loud and exaggerated, just like Yehudi’s style. If you’re familiar with his children’s book Pantalones Tex (and you don’t need to be an actual child to enjoy it) then you’ll know what I’m talking about. A talented cartoonist, the book reminds me of similarly bold and hilarious stories like Samurai Jack and (again) Scott Pilgrim. And even though the characters range widely in ethnicity (its as actually as diverse a cast of characters as I’ve ever seen in a book), they’re never drawn like insulting stereotypes. That’s not to say that race doesn’t play an issue here. One of the best things about the writing is how race is an issue and how the issues it creates resolve themselves, or don’t, through the course of the story. There definitely is a character who models his delivery car off of the General Lee and a Mexican character that’s more similar to a violent Luchador than a delivery guy. But all of this is just basis for some pretty smart Boondocks-style observations and celebrations of our differences.

BuffaloSpeedway_DragonFight

This really is a book I hope you guys pick up. Again, it’s easy for titles like Buffalo Speedway to get lost in the hustle and bustle of the comics industry, where newer and exciting titles are released each week to big fanfare only to fade within the year after they suffer through the next crossover, event or retcon (or even worse: bad Hollywood mangling). Here, Yehudi has made something that is hilarious and exaggerated but never feels like it isn’t coming from the heart. We all remember those first jobs that we had and the issues of whether to stay or move on. But what we don’t always remember are those fun moments where dicking around at those directionless jobs could turn into a crazy adventure, a first love or a life changing event. Buffalo Speedway has all of those moments and more and celebrates them in a way that deserves a much bigger spotlight. Please take my advice and pick this up before… or have it delivered!

The ‘Buffalo Speedway Deep Dish Omnibus‘ is available for ordering now. If you live in LA, 5 lucky orders will be personally driven to you by Yehudi himself, complete with a pizza! Check it out!

Briefly: Just two days ago Telltale debuted three new screenshots from The Wolf Among Us‘ next episode, In Sheep’s Clothing, and now we have the chapter’s release date(s).

Episode four will launch on May 27th for PS3, Windows, and OS X. It’ll hit Xbox 360 on May 28th, and iOS on May 29th. You can take a look at the new trailer for the game below, and be sure to let us know what you think of the game so far!

Briefly: After the insane conclusion of the last episode of Telltale’s The Wolf Among Us, we were itching for more content to sink our teeth into. Now, a month and a half has passed, and the developer has finally released the first screenshots for the game’s fourth episode, In Sheep’s Clothing.

The shots give us a look at a battered Bigby, a somber Snow White, and a dejected Narissa. If you know how the last episode ended (I won’t spoil things if not, but you should definitely be playing this game), you know exactly why everyone looks so down.

Once Telltale starts releasing screenshots, release dates (or at least their announcements) are typically soon to follow. Take a look at the shots below, and be on the lookout for more The Wolf Among Us news.

Wolf1

Wolf2

Wolf3

Briefly: Almost like a kind of cruel joke, Telltale Games yesterday released the launch trailer for the third episode of The Wolf Among Us… but didn’t actually give us any release dates.

Today, the developer/publisher rectified the issue with the following tweet:

Obviously exciting news, and from the image, it looks as though Bigby may completely wolf-out this time around.

How are you liking The Wolf Among Us thus far? How does it stack up to The Walking Dead? Sound out below!

Briefly: We still don’t have a release date for the third episode of Telltale’s amazing The Wolf Among Us, but the developer has just debuted the chapter’s launch trailer.

It does contain spoilers to past episodes, so if you’re not yet caught up I’d definitely not watch the video below. Then, I’d definitely go play the damned game, because it’s wonderful.

Take a look at the trailer below, and let us know what you think. As soon as we hear a release date, we’ll be sure to let you know! As always, the next chapter is looking top notch.

It’s been a while since comic book writer Tom Pinchuk has been on Geekscape! Luckily, we correct that oversight in this episode in which Tom drops by to talk to us about his new comic book Max Steel: Haywire, coming soon from Viz Media! Tom also educates us on the differences in some of the various conventions as Con Season starts up and also about the cultural and narrative differences between Manga and traditional US comic books! Also, when is a character’s internal dialogue too much…?

Just over one week ago, Geekscape TV brought you Lou Ferrigno playing Flappy Bird, and now we’re back with a fantastic conversation with the man that moulded many of our childhood memories, Stan Lee.

A few days back, Jonathan sat down with Stan to film an interview for our new YouTube channel, GeekscapeTV. Geekscape TV is a serious reimagining of our old YouTube channel (it is a different channel, so be sure to subscribe to the new one), and one that we intend to fill to the brim with original, awesome content (like the first trailer for Hero of the Prophecy, the just-remastered HD cut of Gay By Dawn, a hilarious Miami Vice spoof, and so on).

The interview features plenty of great Marvel vs. DC banter, and Stan even reveals the secret to why the Marvel movies have been so successful!

Briefly: I definitely was not expecting to read this tonight (or ever), but NBC has just announced that Heroes will return in 2015.

The reborn series, fittingly titled Heroes Reborn, boasts original creator Tim Kring at the helm, and will be a self-contained 13-episode arc. No word yet on which character’s we’ll see return for the new series.

Take a look at the full press release below, and head further down for the series’ first teaser.

An iconic series that still commands a rabid fan base, “Heroes” will return to the network in 2015 as an event miniseries with original creator and executive producer Tim Kring at the helm, it was announced today by NBC Entertainment President Jennifer Salke.

NBC has ordered 13 episodes for a new stand-alone story arc entitled “Heroes Reborn,” with all details of storylines and characters being kept under wraps.

“The enormous impact ‘Heroes’ had on the television landscape when it first launched in 2006 was eye-opening,” said NBC Entertainment President Jennifer Salke. “Shows with that kind of resonance don’t come around often and we thought it was time for another installment. We’re thrilled that visionary creator Tim Kring was as excited about jumping back into this show as we were and we look forward to all the new textures and layers Tim plans to add to his original concept. Until we get closer to air in 2015, the show will be appropriately shrouded in secrecy, but we won’t rule out the possibility of some of the show’s original cast members popping back in.”

The original series chronicled the life-changing stories of a series of unrelated ordinary people who discovered they had superhuman abilities. As the saga unfolded, they learned they were part of a grand plan that brought them together to change the world.

With the return of “Heroes Reborn,” NBC will launch a digital series prior to the 2015 premiere that will introduce the characters and new storylines. This leveraging of social media is a way for fans to re-engage with what was one for the true pioneers in multiplatform storytelling.

#HeroesReborn

The iconic sci-fi series, which ran on NBC from 2006-10 and was an immediate hit, ranked as television’s #1 new drama with an average audience of 14.5 million viewers during its initial season. The show was Golden Globe-nominated in its first year of eligibility for best drama series; it won the BAFTA Award for best international series, the AFI Award, the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films Saturn Award, two People’s Choice Awards and the Television Critics Association Award for Program of the Year.

“Heroes” remains one of the best-selling TV series on DVD of all time with more than 10 million units sold.

Excited? I sure am. Even through Heroes low points, I remained a fan, and damn that fourth season cliffhanger! I was very disappointed that the concluding film (and then comic) never came to light, so I’m very hopefully that this new series will give us some closure.

I met Johnny Neutrino about a month ago when he played the first Chords for Cures show of 2014. We immediately hit it off with our mutual loves of comics, 90’s punk, horror movies and wrestling. I knew he had to be on the podcast. I hope you enjoy it and pick up their full length on Feb 23rd 2014!

This episode contains Doombots and Doing the Henchmen off Johnny Neutrino & The Secret Weapon’s upcoming full length. It’ll be available Sunday the 23rd ONLY on their bandcamp.

As promised, one of my Miami Vice artists, Mr. Carl Reed, was in town this week to shoot some promotional videos with me for our upcoming book… so why not have him on an episode of Geekscape to talk comics!?! In this episode, we not only talk about and review the ‘RoboCop’ remake but Carl also talks about his creative process, how deep his love of comic books really goes and what properties he would like to see adapted into a comic. Plus! Is there a way to expand the comic book market through female readers? Will they ever buy comics? And we also give some hints on an upcoming Miami Vice project that we have yet to reveal!

“I haven’t done a study or a poll, but deep down I think this is one of the worst fears for every black person in America…Being alone and at the mercy of a huge group of racist whites.”

If you can’t already tell from the cover, Hass is an intense and visceral comic book. It opens with Josh Jones being beaten by five white guys then it transitions to what happened earlier with Josh thinking it is not his life flashing before his eyes but rather the past 24 hours. Earlier Josh arrives on a college campus in Texas and is smitten by a certain girl. He then proceeds to win her over. They have their ups and downs during the date; they open up to each other and in the end they wind up at her place. That is where everything goes wrong. Will Josh be able to survive the beating? Is living after being treated that way worth living? This comic addresses many heavy issues, primarily racism. “Yet even today with all of our advancements and our political correctness there’s still racism that festers under the surface.”

Hass01_01sm

This was a heavy read. I had to take a break after I finished it. Josh is a likeable guy who just happens to fall for a white girl in the wrong place at the wrong time. Mixed race couples are presented as average/no big deal. Josh has a Latin roommate and thinks nothing of it. It is the racist individuals that are the problem. Also, the comic book brings up stereotypes by having Josh be a hipster into heavy metal and he is a “trust fund baby.” Not typical things associated with a black character (or at least not all at the same time). The back of the comic book and the last inside cover image show Josh with name tags all over him with labels such as: hipster, oreo, white washed, snob, Uncle Tom, etc. They are pretty powerful images. One of the racist characters tells Josh he acts like he is white. What does it mean to be white? Is Josh an oreo? Why does he have to have a label?

Hass01_00_1FCa1SDCC

The overall look is also dark with deeply saturated images, thick lines, and mostly dark lighting.  The style shows the main characters and even the background people with realistic expressions. This made it difficult to read through the fight scenes. They make your stomach churn and you feel bad/sad to see what to Josh goes through. The worst part is that stuff like this really does happen which makes it all the more grounded. The characters look like people you could meet anywhere; they look like animated versions of real people. There are some hidden gems in the panels, for example: Master Roshi can be spotted in the restaurant they go to for their date. Also, Josh’s hat and scarf look like he is channeling Dr. Long Scarf from Dr. Who mixed with Freddy Krueger (or maybe it’s just me).

B. Alex Thompson‘s deep story is brought to life by Federico Santagati’s impressive artwork and colors by Russell Vincent Yu. If you are looking for a comic book with depth and great style that addresses current issues you need to check out Hass. This is not a fluff comic book. It makes you think. It makes you look at real events that still go on today. I enjoyed it even though it is a bit darker than I am used to reading. I want to know what happens to Josh. What will he do next? Will he stay with the girl? Will the racist guys get punished? I will definitely keep my eye on this one to see what happens next!

Briefly: We cannot wait for this to come out.

All the way back in April of 2013, we hosted a ‘Roger Corman’s Fantastic Four Reunion‘, which featured some of the film’s prominent cast and crew, as well as documentary producer Mark Sikes. The group was just about to start production on the Doomed: The Untold Story of Roger Corman’s ‘The Fantastic Four’, and today, the first trailer for that documentary was released.

I still haven’t had an opportunity to watch Corman’s version of The Fantastic Four, but have read up on its troubled production extensively, and am very excited for the documentary to release. You can take a look at the trailer below, which features some excellent interview clips with Corman himself, as well as a multitude of cast and crew members.

Be sure to let us know what you think, and if you’re excited to see the full feature!

Back in 1994, legendary B-Movie filmmaker Roger Corman produced one of Marvel’s first movies. It was a feature film adaptation of The Fantastic Four, which at the time never saw the light of day. It has since been bootlegged and leaked, and has gained a cult following over the years. Director Marty Langford has created a documentary called DOOMED!: The Untold Story of Roger Corman’s “The Fantastic Four,”  which gives us the full behind the scenes story of the film’s troubled production and release.

Mel Caylo is a longtime friend of Geekscape so it’s surprising that this is his first appearance! Don’t worry, because the popular comic book everyman has a lot to say! From his work at Boom! Studios to his previous gig at Archaia (now a part of Boom!), Mel knows the indie comics industry backwards and forwards. He takes this opportunity to give you the latest on what Boom! is putting out and what to pick up for the Holidays! Plus! We talk some news, like Paul Walker’s tragic death, the casting of Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman in ‘Man of Steel 2’, ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ trailer and Bryan Singer and Fox announcing ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ for 2016! Oh! And we also get to the bottom as to whether or not Mel tortures his interns! This is one not to miss!

Here’s a clip from the Lion Forge Comics panel at the 2013 Stan Lee’s Comikaze Expo in which my editor Shannon Denton and I talk a bit more about what’s coming up in our Miami Vice comic book series! Is it in continuity? What characters will be included? What’s being changed and what’s staying the same? And of course, will there be any sex? Rampage Jackson himself (who was sitting next to me during the panel) chimes in on that one!

And listen to the full conversation here:

F.J. DeSanto is a film producer whose credits include Frank Miller’s ‘The Spirit’ (but I love him for producing the animated ‘Turok: Son of Stone’)! But he’s also a comic book writer! Now he’s on Geekscape talking about his new Archaia comic book ‘Cyborg 009’, based on the classic manga from legendary creator Shotaro Ishinomori! I also talk some Turok (because Turok is awesome) and F.J. helps to explain the new climate of creator ownership in comics, including the BOOM! and Archaia acquisition! PLUS! Ian Kerner calls up to talk about Ben Affleck being cast as Batman in Man of Steel 2!

Almost 20 years ago, one of the most notorious comic book films of all time was produced: Roger Corman’s ‘The Fantastic Four’! For most of its existence, this unreleased gem, which fans either loved or bemoaned, was only available through bootleg fan copies at comic book conventions. A VHS or DVD copy was the Holy Grail of Geekdom! Now, on the eve of production on the documentary ‘Doomed: The Untold Story of Roger Corman’s “Fantastic Four” Movie’, original cast members Rebecca Staab, Joseph Culp, Carl Ciarfalio and documentary producer Mark Sikes (who was a casting assistant on the film) talk about what it was like making the film, being in the film and looking back 20 years later! Geekscapist Satori claims “This is a really great ep, probably my favorite since you’ve been on Toadhop.” and “This is BRILLIANT!!!!” Who are we to argue with a longtime Geekscapist? Enjoy!

It’s been a few years since we’ve seen a real tried and true DC event that really touches everyone. That tradition of big events is coming sooner than anyone may have expected, in the form of July’s upcoming Trinity War. Even before Flashpoint, the big events were cataclysmic in scale and had much more of an impact on a very different DC Trinity, the varied Justice Leagues. With the new Justice League of America, there are now three leagues in total, including the well-known Justice League and the lesser-known and magically inclined Justice League Dark. The new DCU won’t be the same after this, because it’s as much about the three leagues as it is the Trinity of Sin.

The Justice League
The Justice League

For those unaware of this “Trinity of Sin”, let’s take a look back at the New 52 FCBD Special Edition from 2012. We see the Phantom Stranger, Pandora and the new Question. These three are guilty of crimes against Man by the Circle of Eternity, a cable of wizards whose most notable member was Shazam. That’s right. The old wizard that turned Billy Batson into The World’s Mightiest Mortal was one of those that cursed the Trinity of Sin. The ways in which they did so were fairly ironic. The Phantom Stranger will forever remain a mystery to others and must betray people who rely on him. Pandora must wander the Earth alone and be told how she and her curiosity are evil. The Question was once a mighty warlord, until the Circle of Eternity caused him to forget his own name and desperately search for answers he’d never find.To say that Pandora is dangerous is to make a severe understatement. She is, after all, the woman who singlehandedly caused the DCU as we knew it to become what it is today, or so the pages of Flashpoint would have us believe. She’ll get her own series a month before the Trinity War begins, so we’ll really have an opportunity to learn about her then, and then the Question as the Trinity War unfolds.

Trinity of Sin: Pandora, Phantom Stranger and The Question
Trinity of Sin: Pandora, Phantom Stranger and The Question

The thing to think about is that both the Trinity and the three leagues will duke it out. Furthermore, the fact that a character has to die in order for the event to take off shows just how big it may be. It seems as though the lines between the good and bad guys will be blurred on this one, similarly to Crisis on Infinite Earths and Zero Hour. It feels like it’ll be a “how hard can I hit before you break” sort of book. I’m really looking forward to a good story, but at this point, who really knows what we’ll get from it. It may very well undo the New 52, or it could be the final catalyst that forces the WildC.A.T.s into being in the current continuity.

Justice League of America
Justice League of America

For now, what we know is that there will be plenty of characters thrown at each other that either haven’t met or just plain hate each other. The Martian Manhunter and Shazam are two of those sorts of characters: J’onn, the Martian Manhunter, is the one with no real allegiances and a rough meeting with the original Justice League, contrary to the old model of the DCU, while Shazam has not yet been part of any team, and it’s unclear as to whether he even wishes to be. The inclusion of these and other sorts of “minor” characters could potentially give them solo series. The thing to really remember is how events like Crisis on Infinite Earths revitalized DC Comics during their publication.

Justice League Dark
Justice League Dark

Showing all of the extra characters in an event like this could potentially work very well for the New 52. All I can tell you about the finale at this point is what Geoff Johns told USA Today earlier:

“It’s not going to end wrapped up in a bow,” he says. “Something really, really major happens that kicks off some pretty crazy stuff at the end of August.”

What I feel in my gut (and it’s never wrong… except for when it is) is that things will be quite different after this event, in the same way that things changed for Marvel after AvX last year. Sides will be chosen, relationships forever changed, and trust broken beyond repair. Some things are going to go down and people are going to say and do things that they can’t take back. That’s just life as a superhero (or John Constantine) for you. Things have a way of happening, and somebody usually ends up paying for it. It’ll certainly make the DCU more interesting than it’s been for the past few months, but the question is, “at what price?” We’ll figure out soon, so until then, just keep on checking the news feeds and your old pals at Geekscape. Trust me, I’ve got you covered. When I know, so will you.

If you’ve read DC comics in the last few years or so, there’s no reason not to know the name Geoff Johns. If anyone has a had a significant role in shaping the Green Lantern Corps, it’s him. By bringing back Hal Jordan in Green Lantern: Rebirth, Johns began his career of changing the Green Lantern Corps’ corner of the DC Universe. No longer were the Green Lanterns the only corps in existence, there became a multitude of Lantern Corps’ with various colors and emotional connections. Fans even got a look at how Hal and his post-Parallax successor Kyle Rayner would interact, and their feelings regarding the other’s legacy.

From here, he introduced us to much more than just Will. We saw that Willpower and and the blue energy of Hope made man and alien alike the best they could be and accomplish many heroic deeds. Unfortunately, we were also shown the wondrous horrible things that Rage and Fear were capable of. The most unlikely and often underrated characters became champions of Compassion and Love. Then we got to know Larfleeze and the orange Avarice energies. After that, things went to hell in the pages of the Blackest Night saga as an army of the dead rose up from their graves, being lead by Nekron and Black Hand, who we hadn’t seen since Rebirth. It was during this time, 2010, that Johns was promoted to Chief Creative Officer of DC. After this, we got Brightest Day and then, for some reason, Flashpoint. I really have no words for Flashpoint. None at all.

He has brought some interesting things into the Green Lantern mythos, such as Sinestro somehow getting hold of a Green Lantern ring. Over a year and a half later, I’m still trying to wrap my brain around that. Then there was the fact that Sinestro gave Hal a duplicate ring, which is also hard to believe. Then there’s Baz, the new GL of Earth, bringing the total number of Corps affiliated GLs to five in the New 52. The thing is, after issue 12 or so, the quality of the GL stories has been in a gradual decline. While it hurts to say that, it did have to be mentioned. I’m looking forward to Johns wrapping up Wrath of the First Lantern and to see good things in the GL book again.

After issue 20, Johns will be leaving Green Lantern in order to keep up with his CCO duties and writing such titles as Justice League, Aquaman (which he single-handedly made awesome again) and Justice League of America. The first two have been consistently good and many are hoping for good things from JLA. Due to his early and well-earned status as one of the best writers of the New 52, I wish him luck in his current and future projects. May the New Gods watch over your career, Mr. Johns.

On this episode of Geekscape, Gavin joins me to talk about his semi-autobiographical book “The Freak Table“, about growing up in Middle School and High School as a complete outsider and member of a counter culture movement about to go mainstream. Sound familiar? Yeah… there’s probably a lot that will resonate with us on this episode of Geekscape!

At LBCC I got a chance to talk to one of my favorite creators… Mike Mignola of Hellboy and B.P.R.D. fame. In this short conversation, we talk about the death of Hellboy, if he’ll return and the evolution of the B.P.R.D. (one of my favorite regular comics). We also talk about the future of Baltimore, one of Mike’s collaborations, and one of my favorite regular miniseries. I can’t recommend it enough for fans of gothic horror and giant monsters!

In this month’s Vampirella vs. Fluffy the Vampire Killer, writer Mark Rahner continues his series of Vampirella one-shots, taking Vampi into the worlds of current vampire fandoms. Previously, in Vampirella Annual 2, we witnessed Vampirella venture to the fictional city of Spoons, where she went to a convention for Gloaming, the in-universe equivalent of Twilight, and battled the fans and characters of the franchise (based, in part, by Rahner’s own experience in Forks, WA). This time , Vampirella is pitted against a satirical version of the much beloved pop-culture alluding, cheer leading, vampire slaying Buffy Summers. And. It. Is. Awesome.

Granted, my lack of love for Joss Whedon is well documented, so it may be hard for me to not actively fangasm all over this particular book for poking fun at the Buffyverse. That said, I do believe any Whedonite who can take a light jab at his or her fandom will thoroughly enjoy this book as much as anyone who isn’t all that familiar with the Slayer and her universe. Which is to say: a lot. It truly is a book for just about anyone, except maybe children (there’s a sufficient amount of blood and gore) and die hard religious conservatives (but they don’t read comics, right?).

Here’s the gist of the story: Vampirella goes undercover as a teacher (cue: multiple jokes and references to Van Halen’s Hot for Teacher) at a high school that is located right on top of an occult portal to Hell (insert: snide comments about government and improper use of tax dollars). Luckily for the town, peppy Fluffy and her friends Xtanley and Sallow, along with her Minder Miles, all attend or are employed by the school and therefore have been able to handle the supernatural situation up to this point. However, a new group of demonic (im)Puritans are mutilating the sexually active members of the student body in order to unleash the wrath of a greater demon, who gets his power from sexual repression, onto the world. And as “Abstinence Education Week” is in full swing at the school, there’s a lot of pent up sexual frustration going on. Whatever shall the teen-aged vampire killers do?

In addition to Fluffy and company, Whedonites may even be able to spy their beloved creator hidden somewhere in the story, as well.

The dialogue is plenty clever, even with—or perhaps because of—the forced puns and dated music and film references. I found myself genuinely laughing and giddy throughout. Even so, my favorite line is actually an on-the-nose statement about feminism, particularly reactionary to Whedon’s brand of female hero.:

After countless jabs from Fluffy regarding Vampirella’s scanty costume, Vampi finally states, “Empowerment means I can wear whatever I want and kill anyone who has a problem with it.”

While killing isn’t exactly an option in the real world, the sentiment is understood. Clothes, or lack thereof, should not be the focus or the excuse of any attacks on a person (from slut shaming to “forcible” rape). But that’s a different article entirely.

Like all satire worth its salt—and any decent horror story—, Vampirella Vs. Fluffy the Vampire Killer is more than just wildly entertaining. It addresses serious real world problems, as well. While playfully jabbing at the Whedonverse, critical hits are dealt to the United States’ ultra-conservative movement’s war on education and sex via the “Abstinence Week” setting, the demons’ M.O., and even a line of dialogue from Sallow that is poignant and painful in retrospect. It’s too much of a spoiler to disclose here, so pick up the book. Seriously. I’d love to discuss the themes further.

Finally, the art. While Nick Bradshaw‘s cover serves its purpose, interior artist Cesar Razek (Zorro) is pitch perfect, rendering gorgeous, in addition to some truly gruesome, images. While Vampirella, Fluffy, et al, are of course comic book beautiful (as are the men in the story), his style here is decidedly not cheesecake, which is always a relief. I love my female heroes and I will defend to the death (in true Voltaire fashion) their honor and right to style to any non-comic reader or slut shaming jerk, no matter the artist or the writer. Nevertheless, it certainly makes my job easier when I don’t have to do so in view of 20 consecutive panels of pure T&A and back breaking poses. So thank you, Mr. Razek for that. I hope to see your art again in the near future.

If you are looking for something fun and bloody, clever and violent, all the while remaining culturally relevant, then Vampirella vs. Fluffy the Vampire Killer is most certainly the book for you this Hallowednesday (see what I did there?).

Vampirella vs. Fluffy the Vampire Killer is out Oct. 24 from Dynamite Entertainment. Look for it at your local comic book shop!
