This past week, the world got to experience Splatoon online for the first time. Nintendo’s first foray into the arena shooter genre is a risky one, throwing out most traditional conventions to focus on a kind of territory war. Kills mean little here, so how can one control a battlefield with paint shooters and rollers? After participating in all three scheduled Global Testfire Demo periods, we got a good idea of what to expect from the online experience, while trying out the expanded weapons and maps for the first time. The E3 and Wondercon demos were great, but with a better idea of what we could expect from the final product, we examined our seven biggest takeaways from the online event.

1. Stalking Your Prey Is Key

In Splatoon, covering the field with more of your team’s paint than the opposition is the name of the game. Moreso than fragging the enemy, surrounding them with paint means you can slow down their movement while speeding up your own. As the game became more comfortable to play, it became apparent that taking advantage of your squid form, and diving under your paint for reloading and positioning purposes was vital to victory. But the best part of being a squid is to be able to sneak up on unsuspecting enemies trying to take your land. While it’s awfully rewarding to catch someone off guard, don’t stay under too long! Camping in your paint will lead to your position popping up on the map. Don’t say we didn’t warn you!

2. The Paint Roller Is OP… If You’re New To The Game!

When I first jumped in to the Global Testfire, the Paint Roller felt like the perfect weapon. Allowing you to cover up a ton of space with your paint while having to reload less frequently and gaining a short range scatter shot felt like all you needed to be team MVP! Eventually though, it became obvious that one was dead in the water if seen at a distance, which isn’t hard since the map being covered at a rapid pace is a dead giveaway as to where you’re located. Not that it isn’t incredibly powerful, but let’s just say that winning is likely in the bag if you come across a team of four rollers. Oh, and speaking of weapons…

Roller

3. Not All Special Weapons Are Created Equal

Special weapons are a reward for accumulating a certain amount of points without being killed. Yet, while they’re supposed to be huge, area clearing items that give you a temporary boost, most of them in the demo were rather underwhelming. One shot a large wave of paint in a particular direction, which covered a good amount of distance, but was easily undone. The others were variations of unlimited grenades, which didn’t do much when you found yourself surrounded, other than lull you into a false sense of security. But when the Bubble Shield came into play, it was clear that it was the only one worth using. There was nothing more rewarding throughout the entire game than activating it when a smug roller is about to run you over, only for them to bounce off your shield at the last second and proceed to get splattered. I’m crossing my fingers for a bit more balance in this regard, since I didn’t even bother using my so-called reward unless it was the shield.

4.The Charge Rifle Kind Of Sucks.

Moving on from special weapons to main weapons, I struggled to see the point in the Charge Rifle. Aside from picking off opponents who were advancing on your territory, it didn’t contribute much in the way of expanding your team’s territory. Sure, it shot a long stream of paint that would cover a straight line, but this was easily covered by opponents with faster weapons. Maybe when the final game expands on this weapon type with legitimate sniper rifles that cover more distance, they will serve more of a purpose. But in a game where netting kills doesn’t amount to much, especially against rapid fire paint shooters that cover more space much faster, and I was left wondering what the point was.

5. Lobby Mini-Games Are A Brilliant Idea.

Longtime shooter fans will tell you that waiting for a game to start can suck the life out of one’s enthusiasm. Whether its someone dropping out, the connection taking long to establish, or the game itself not functioning properly, sitting on your hands and doing nothing before a match is universally reviled. Luckily, Splatoon added a mini game in between rounds where you help an 8-bit squid jump on platforms to reach a goal. The final game promises multiple games, but this one alone had multiple levels, the end of which I never got. I mean, if The Master Chief Collection had a way of making me forget that it was unplayable online, I wouldn’t have regretted buying it so much! I mean, I still would’ve regretted it, but at least I would’ve been distracted!

Splatoon1

6. Be careful where you spawn!

Splatoon has a pretty neat feature that allows newly spawned Inklings to jump straight to the position of a teammate in the middle of the map. This is perfect when you want to get straight back into the action, but an overzealous squid is a dead one. I could have avoided many a death by noticing whether or not the teammate I chose to back up was surrounded, or if I would be jumping straight into a gunfight, rather than helping the lone teammate on the opposite side of the map covering a big, empty space. Dying fast feels terrible, and this was a surefire way to do it. Pay attention, and look alive out there!

7. Victory can be stolen at a moment’s notice!

If it wasn’t obvious by now, Splatoon is far from a traditional shooter. With that said, it’s fully possible for one team to dominate, only for their opponents to turn things around at the last minute and steal the victory away. No matter how many kills you amassed, how much space you covered, or how much you held your enemies at bay, if you let them rally, they will win! It wasn’t unusual to see a team completely take over a spawn point at the last minute, with a few people camping on newly revived enemies while the rest of them continued to take land back. It’s a cruel reality on the paint splattered battlefield! Only the most tenacious will do their colors proud!

So what do you think? Does Splatoon seem like a unique enough shooter for you to enlist, or does its quirks stray too far from traditions to make it worth a purchase? Let us know what your impressions of the Testfire are in the comments, and keep an eye out for us when the next demo period hits on May 23rd!

Splatoon is scheduled for a May 29th release, only on Wii U.

Did you miss out on last week’s Splatoon Global Testfire, the demo/online stress test that was only available at specific dates and times? Well, if you did, or if you managed to jump online and want another fix, you’re in luck! The Global Testfire is on its way back next weekend!

On May 23rd from 3-4PM Pacific, would-be Inklings will be able to test out Nintendo’s latest IP, taking on the arena shooter genre. Featuring the same weapons and stages as the first time around, including the Paint Roller, Charge Rifle and the standard Splatershots, on top of a variety of special weapons, veterans shouldn’t expect anything new. Even still, most who have played it were hooked, so the more we get to play before its May 29th release date, the better I say.

Head to the Wii U eShop and pre-install the Global Testfire demo ahead of the announced time, then jump on and have at it! What do you think of Splatoon so far? Head on over to the comments and let us know!

As any Playstation gamer who may or may not be responsible with their cash, could tell you, Sony occasionally has some incredible flash sales, offering some of the most critically acclaimed titles available for a fraction of the price.

This weekend is no different. Until Monday, May 18, at 9:00 AM Pacific, the Playstation Store is offering dozens of games for less than five dollars, some of which include The Mass Effect Trilogy, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater HD, Okami HD, Ni No Kuni, The Walking Dead: The Complete First Season, The Wolf Among Us, Soul Sacrifice Delta and Freedom Wars! Great for our gaming habit, but bad for our backlog, this list is sure to have something worth playing for nearly every gamer.

Look over the full list here and tell us what you’re picking up! Remember, with this being a flash sale, it will only be up for a very limited time, so make sure to grab them while you can!

The planet Gamindustri has found peace due to the combined efforts of the CPU’s and the CPU candidates. The CPU candidates find themselves a little bored in this time of peace.  However, what to warriors do when there aren’t any bad guys to battle? The answer comes in an interesting proposition in their time of peaceful boredom.

Hyperdimension Neptunia U: Action Unleashed is the first 3D action hack ‘n’ slash in the game series. Your favorite Neptunia characters will have to battle it out to determine who is the best, and strongest.

Hack ‘n’ slash your way through waves of enemies in real time. The free roaming battle stages allow you to create chain combos on the ground and in the air. You can play as your favorite characters as well as new playable characters, with new customizable equipment.

Hyperdimension Neptunia U: Action Unleashed features a dual system that allows you to switch between two characters. Allowing players to combine different characters and learn their strengths and weaknesses for the ultimate battle duo!

One of the new features is a “Costume Break”. Your character’s outfits tear and rip from the heat of battle. Costume damage lowers your defense but increases your crit rate and EXE Drive Gage.

Get ready to experience the new installment in the Hyperdimesion series and prepare for battle! Hyperdimension Neptunia U: Action Unleashed will be released on May 19th, in North America, and May 22nd in Europe. It will be available exclusively on the Playstation Vita and will be compatible with PlayStation TV.

Josh had an opportunity to take a look at the game earlier this week! You can check out his full review here.

UPDATE: After this story was published, Nintendo detailed how players will qualify for the competition! On May 30th, select Best Buy stores will have qualifying rounds nationwide, with the winner of each earning an invite to the finals in LA, hosted at Nokia Theater on June 14th! On top of that, anyone who plays Mario Maker at a Best Buy on the dates in the story will receive a 30th anniversary Mario pin while supplies last!

Check out the press release below:

  • On May 30, select Best Buy locations in major cities around the country will host qualifying tournaments for the Nintendo World Championships, which were last seen in 1990. The winners from each regional event, plus competitors invited by Nintendo, will meet on June 14, at the NOKIA Theatre L.A. LIVE in Los Angeles for a multi-round Nintendo game competition. In the end, one player will be crowned the 2015 Nintendo World Champion. Fans in Los Angeles will have the opportunity to attend the tournament, while others can watch online. More details about the qualifying tournaments will be shared in the coming weeks.

Original story:

Talk about nostalgia! For the first time in 25 years, Nintendo will revive the Nintendo World Championships at this year’s E3!

Taking place on Sunday, June 14th, (the Sunday before the year’s biggest gaming convention,) the company has teased a wide range of games for players to compete in, including the NES classic, Track And Field, Donkey Kong Country for the SNES, Wii Fit, Wii Sports and even GameCube involvement, although no particular game was teased. It looks like the competition will span the entirety of Nintendo’s home console history, which will be right up the allies of the longtime gamer.

In addition, the company rounded out its reveal with the rest of its E3 schedule, including their E3 Digital Event, live Nintendo Treehouse coverage from the show floor, and a return to Best Buy stores for gamers to try out a flagship convention title, this time in the form of Mario Maker. Not quite Smash Bros., but we’ll take it!

The schedule is as follows:

Nintendo World Championships 2015: June 14th

Nintendo Digital Event: Tuesday, June 16th at 9AM PT

Nintendo Treehouse Live @ E3: Ongoing throughout the convention.

Mario Maker at Best Buy: Wednesday, June 17 from 4-9PM, and Saturday, June 20th, from 12-5PM

Details as to how one enters the contest, confirmation on what games will be featured, or whether or not people will be able to participate outside of Los Angeles is unclear, (although the specification of LA in the reveal video suggests that it will be exclusive to those in town,) but it’s obvious that the company is trying to recapture some of the magic from last year’s Smash Invitational. I for one, know our fearless leader and former contestant will be eager to try his hand at the competition 25 years later. Are you?

Tell us what games you hope will be included below, and throw in some E3 speculation while we’re at it. What do you hope to see?

At this point, I feel like my Vita is a dedicated entryway into the world of Gamindustri. Considering that four different Hyperdimension Neptunia games have been released for the handheld in the last year, it’s easy to see why. Now that we’ve played not one, but two fantastic RPGs, dived into the strategy role playing realm, and even tried our hand at producing and managing their careers as singers, it’s about time the series took the action route. In Hyperdimension Neptunia U: Action Unleashed, (a strange name for a non-Wii U title,) Gamindustri meets Dynasty Warriors in an over the top, horde slaying beat em up with the CPU and CPU Candidates doing the thwomping. But how well does a traditionally turn based franchise cross over into the action genre?

Now that the world is at peace, what’s a goddess to do aside from play games all day? Unfortunately, gaming doesn’t make a compelling news story, so when game journalists, Famitsu and Dengekiko, are tasked with writing up stories on the lives of the CPU’s and their little sisters, a little encouragement pushes them towards getting off their lazy butts and completing a few quests. Or at least, that was the plan. But when quests suddenly start popping up at an alarming pace, the gaming goddesses are forced to take up their weapons once again and fight off the overwhelming amount of monsters that have appeared while finding out who’s behind the sudden influx of requests. If our two writers are able to get a great story in the process, then even better!

Neptunia1

Hyperdimension Neptunia U features ten unique characters to play as, which naturally include the CPU’s, their little sisters, and the addition of Famitsu and Dengekiko. Each character has a set of unique, (although limited,) combos and special moves that are designed to harm waves of enemies at once, and vary from slow and powerful, long range, or fast with a high hit count. As missions progress, each character builds up experience, unlocks new equipment and discovers new special attacks to put even more pressure on the more difficult enemies. With the option of taking on these missions solo, or pairing two characters together, each one is varied enough to feel unique while still accomplishing the same tasks.

Keep in mind, on top of all of these options per character, the CPU’s wouldn’t be much without their HDD forms. These serve as a temporary transformation that boosts attack power while changing their combos completely, essentially feeling like separate characters. Making it incredibly easy to wipe out foot soldiers and bosses alike, despatching dozens of enemies at one time with your powerful, special attack right before the transformation ends is ridiculously badass, all of which is done without a hint of a frame rate dip. Naturally, you have to fight for that meter, which fills up for the idle partner while the player character defeats enemies. If theirs is full, the player character will get their fill. Switching is as easy as tapping the down button on the D-Pad, so managing the meter is one of the more strategic aspects of Neptunia U, especially when it comes to the end game content. If you’re more passive, you could always fill your meter by tearing your clothes to shreds… Wait, what?

Neptunia2

Yep, as you probably know if you’re reading this review, (and if you didn’t, welcome to the madness!), as characters take damage, their clothes rip up until their so-called armor “breaks,” resulting in a brief mid-battle cutscene that shows the girls in suggestive positions in nothing but tattered duds and underwear. Story wise, in a desperate attempt to cover up, they transform into their HDD forms, which come with their own, handy outfits! In other words, you get instant access to their most powerful forms faster if you let their clothes rip. Considering this game is developed by Tamsoft, the designers behind most of the Senran Kagura games, it’s not really a surprise since that series has made wardrobe malfunctions famous in recent years. Still, there are few moments more uncomfortable than when you’re playing as one of the sisters, (especially the pre-teen Rom and Ram,) and their butts and chests jiggle in slow motion as the clothes fly off. With that said, the game offers unlockable costumes that don’t break, break easily, or are pre broken depending on player performance, so kudos to the developers for giving the player the choice to shape their own game play experience.

Speaking of the experience, we can’t ignore the dialogue. As expected from a Neptunia game, its personality and charm shine through both in and out of quests. It’s clear that a ton of care went into the character relationships, with unique chatter between almost every possible team. When not fighting to the death, special events expand on the personalities of everyone involved, which range from fourth wall breaking gaming commentary, balking at the absurdity of their clothes tearing, and even a “GamerGate” ethics in journalism quip! While not as laugh out loud funny as the main games, considering nearly every line is voiced with both Japanese and English voice options on an individual character basis, what’s provided is plenty when you take into account that this is an action game rather than an RPG. Either way, it’s still more than serviceable for the franchise faithful.

Despite how varied the mechanics and characters can be though, one major issue that most games of this nature encounter is its repetitiveness, and U is no exception. Each character’s move set is insanely stylish, but with only a few combos per character, you’ll see everything each one has to offer soon after picking them up. Not only that, but the game offers little incentive to experiment, leaving players to stick with the combo that works best for them, rinse and repeat. The main story mode never gets particularly challenging either, making its hundred-ish quests a breeze. Every once in a while, the game throws a curve ball at you, either by hiding objectives, asking you to collect items or hunt down a certain enemy, but at the end of the day, each one is accomplished by beating everything into submission.

Neptunia3

Yet, U redeems itself in a big way when it comes to the post game content. After spending 12 hours or so completing all of the quests in the main story, a wealth of new missions and modes keep the fun going. If you think you’ll just be able to blow through these stages like you were able to in the campaign, think again. To survive, you’ll have to pick your attacks carefully, manage your meter better than ever, and know when its best to just quit the mission, store your earned EXP, and live to fight another day. In addition, an arena mode pits the CPU’s against each other in one on one battles that unlock powerful accessories, and a tower mode which sends two of the girls into a multi-tiered challenge where they must fight off increasingly powerful enemies. On top of collecting enemy medals, (coins that opponents drop at random once defeated and can be used to unlock stat boosts, weapons and accessories,) and boosting the group’s friendship, (or Lily Ranks,) for in game perks, and you have a game that will potentially last for much longer than expected. If I were to be extra critical, I would have liked it if the arena mode’s difficulty didn’t range from one hit kill, one hit death or a legitimate match, if it let you fight against other Vita owners, (assuming they exist,) and that collecting medals and boosting Lily Ranks wasn’t such a grind-fest, but these issues don’t detract from the experience too much. Besides, what kind of Neptunia game would this be if it didn’t have insane trophy grinding?

Most impressively, Hyperdimension Neptunia U has become a game that I just can’t put down. Perfect for the portable experience, the quests, bonus content and grinding feel tailor made to be played in short bursts. That’s not to say that I haven’t had hours long sessions, (and I’ve had many,) but with as fun, colorful and fast paced the action turned out, it’s no wonder that the addiction has set in. If you love Neptune and friends in all of their self-referential glory, then this is a no-brainer. If you’re a beat em up fan who desperately needs something to play on the Vita, then U is more than a worthy purchase. While the anime inspired style, its repetitive nature, and the whole clothes tearing thing might not be everyone’s cup of tea, you might just be surprised with how endearing this game can be. Try it, you’ll be glad you did!

tl;dr

+ Successfully brings the style of the Neptunia games to the action genre, with flashy attacks and combos to go around for its varried cast.

+ A lengthy campaign filled with a plethora of quests, unlockable items and game industry satire.

+ Post game content improves the game a great deal, adding modes and missions that make you re-think the game.

+ The same tongue in cheek script that we’ve come to expect from the series, complete with dual language options for individual characters.

+ The clothes tearing option adds to the strategy while being entirely optional.

– Combat becomes repetitive with only a few attack sets per character. The twenty characters, (including their HDD forms,) doesn’t alieviate it enough, and is only amplified by most of the objectives revolving around killing everything in sight.

– Some unlockables are absurdly grind heavy, artificially extending the replay value with enemies that give few rewards and a slow moving Lily Rank mechanic.

– While fun for what it is, the arena mode is a missed opportunity, with wildly unbalanced difficulty settings and the lack of a PvP versus mode.

Final Score: 4/5

Want to play Splatoon, Nintendo’s squad based shooter, a few weeks early? Then listen up, soldier!

This weekend, between three designated hours, Wii U owners will be able to participate in the Global Testfire! Players will be able to jump online and play against fellow Inklings around the world ahead of the game’s launch, including Nintendo team members that will be dressed in special lab coats. While the demo is currently available on the Nintendo eShop for pre-installing, the game will only run during the following times:

Friday- 8-9 PM PST

Saturday- 4-5 AM PST

Saturday- 12-1 PM PST

If you can’t make it, or hope to see yourself playing on an official stream, the folks at Nintendo’s Treehouse will stream the first hour test, making mini celebrities out of Nintendo ID’s across the country.

While less of a demo and more of a stress test for its online functionality, it’s a good sign that Nintendo is taking their first online shooter so seriously, hopefully ensuring that the game works as intended at launch. Want to join in on this weekend’s splatfest? Share your Nintendo IDs below and we’ll be on the look out for you!

As the Amiibo hunt only grows harsher, many of us are still scrambling to secure a Splatoon Triple Pack, brining together the Inkling Boy, Inkling Girl, and the exclusive Inkling Squid in one nifty package. But for those who want to use them in the game, what are they for outside of displaying and weeping over when you recall the struggle to get them? Outside of promising bonus missions, we finally got some details on what those would be.

Each Amiibo will unlock a different set of challenges focusing on the different weapon types the game features. The boy focuses on the close range Roller weapon, which spreads paint in front of him as he walks and grants the ability to deflect enemy fire. The girl brings a set of rifles, which shoot trails of paint over long distances and come equipped with scopes depending on which one is being used. Finally, the squid focuses on the rapid fire Shooter and The Kraken, a special ability that allows Inklings to spiral through enemies while in the normally passive squid form.

Completing these missions unlock exclusive costumes to customize your characters with, adding to an already large character customization option. If you manage to complete the missions for all three, a special mini game will unlock alongside a series of retro themed games that can be found  through regular play. More content in a game that already promises to be this big is always a plus, but let’s just hope there are enough Amiibo on the shelf to accomidate the fanbase.

Does this content make the Amiibo worth tracking down to you? Or are you bummed that there is content locked behind a plastic pay wall?

Amiibo

If you didn’t pre-order Splatoon at GameStop, you might want to switch it over.

During this morning’s Nintendo Direct, the company continued its hard push for their next new IP by attaching some special content to one of its most popular titles, Super Smash Bros. At pick up, everyone who snags their copy of Splatoon at a GameStop will receive a code to download Inkling themed costumes for their Mii characters. Like the costume pack, these offer cosmetic changes to your favorite custom characters, bringing the splatfest to Nintendo’s biggest fighter. Unlike the DLC packs, it doesn’t seem like this set is coming to 3DS, but more on that as it develops.

Are the costumes enough of a reason for you to make the switch? Splatoon launches on May 29th.

Briefly: Dang.

Two films that I was really looking forward to have just received delays. Sure, they’re small delays, but delays nonetheless.

Warcraft, which was initially slated for March 2016, has received a new date of June 10th 2016. This puts it into the busy Summer movie season (showing confidence for the film, right?), and also pushes it away from the sure-to-be-a-blockbuster Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Pacific Rim 2 was originally set to release in April of 2017, and will also get a push to the Summer, hitting theatres on August 4th, 2017.

At least each push is only a few months, right? Are one are you most looking forward to? Sound out below!

Alliance

If you thought that Super Smash Bros. has ran its course, think again. During yesterday’s hype filled Nintendo Direct, the company had a ton of news to share for the blockbuster fighter, much of which was completely unexpected.

First, if you’re one of the people who have been waiting on baited breath for the Mewtwo DLC that was announced late last year, you won’t have to wait much longer. For those who registered their copies of the game for both the Wii U and 3DS, the legendary Pokemon will be available for download at no extra charge on April 15th. For everyone else, they’ll have to fork over $3.99 for one game, or $4.99 for both and wait until April 28th. Check out its reveal trailer below, including its Final Smash, complete with its Mega Mewtwo Y form and its signature Psystrike attack!

Next, also on April 15th, Mii Fighters will receive the downloadable costume treatment. Highlights of the first set of outfits include a Link costume, a Majora’s Mask headgear item, Dunban’s duds from Xenoblade Chronicles, Mega Man X and Protoman costumes, along with Smash T-Shirts, cat suits and monkey suits, (seriously, what’s with Nintendo’s animal suit obsession these days?) Each item has four download options, at either $.75 each, $1.15 each for both the 3DS and Wii U versions, or $6.00 and $9.20 for the entire set for one or both consoles.

Third, and easily the biggest surprise to come out of the Smash Bros. news wave, is that Lucas is making his big return! The protagonist of Mother 3 and formerly cut Smash Bros. Brawl newcomer is returning, with most of his moves seemingly intact. Will he get a new Final Smash, different pricing from Mewtwo or any other major changes? We have no idea! What we do know, is he will be released in June and his reveal trailer is pretty sweet. Check it out!

And lastly, if Lucas and Mewtwo aren’t your favorites and you think you could come up with a better downloadable roster, now’s your chance! A trip over to the official Smash Bros. website links to a poll where you can write in who you would want to appear as future DLC for the title, with a deadline of October 3rd.

Our own Eric Francisco has urged us to write in Travis Touchdown from No More Heroes, but we have enough sword users! If you don’t write in Ray MK II from Custom Robo, Chibi Robo from, well… Chibi Robo, or Issac from Golden Sun, then we can’t be friends. I mean sure, Issac has a sword, but at least his character model is complete as a former Assist Trophy and would have unique Psynergy attacks. At the very least, vote Starman from Pro Wrestling! A winner can never be you without him! Then again, while the site says one vote per person, there’s nothing actually stopping us from voting more than once. Just saying…

With so much news, it seems like we’ll be settling it in Smash for a long time. Comment below to tell us what you’re most excited about, and who you’re going to vote in as the next DLC character!

Remember Splatoon? The upcoming 3rd Person Shooter for Wii U that we previewed last year? Well, we finally know when we’re going to have the final version in our hands, and it’s coming with a few new Amiibo to boot!

Coming on May 29th, Nintendo’s latest IP takes the traditional arena deathmatch FPS and changes the focus from shooting your enemies to shooting the environment. Each team is scored based on how much of the field they tag with their own paint, with bonus weapons, paint splatter and movement options depending on performance. With a full-fledged single player mode to go along with the online battles, we’re hoping that the final build offers us countless hours of fun.

In addition, in what shouldn’t be too big of a surprise, Splatoon is also getting its own amiibo set. Featuring a boy and girl Inkling along with a Squid, the boy and girl will be sold separately in addition to a triple pack bundle, which as of now, is the only way to get the squid. While it’s common practice for other toys to life figures to come in bundles, this is the first time amiibo will be sold in this type of pack. While pricing has yet to be announced, I’m willing to bet the triple pack will save us a little cash when available.

(NOTE: Since this writing was completed, it has been confirmed that the pack will retail at $35. Thanks, Amazon!)

So if you couldn’t tell, I’m excited for Splatoon! What about you? Have the Inklings splattered your heart yet? Let us know!

Amiibo

As one of the many Amiibo related announcements during the latest Nintendo Direct presentation, Yoshi’s Wooly World will be one of many Nintendo titles to gain support for the money draining figure craze. Except, as with the game’s visuals, these upcoming Yoshi toys take on a unique look.

Arriving alongside the game in September, the Yarn Yoshi’s come in pink, light blue, and his trademark green. Scanning them adds a second CPU controlled player to help us get through tough spots and reach hidden areas. Although, even if they didn’t do a thing in the game, I’m sure I’m not the only one who would rush out and buy them anyway, if for no other reason than because they’re so darn cute. The question is, do you buy all three? Oh wait, that’s not a real question, of course you do.

The game itself is looking to carry the spirit of the classic Yoshi’s Island titles, (ignoring the latest one, I hope,) with plenty of colorful environments, creative platforming challenges and tons of hidden items to discover in this yarn based world. If the game is too tough, (has a Yoshi game ever been?), an easier difficulty with permanent winged Yoshi is also available. Hopefully this means that Wooly World will offer up a decent challenge, rather than shoehorning the easier option in just to follow most of Nintendo’s other first party software. Either way, we loved what we played at E3 last year, so if the trend continues, Wooly World should be a welcomed addition to a growing Wii U library.

Yoshi

Is Yoshi’s latest adventure on your radar? Let us know!

Briefly: After what seems like forever (I remember playing in a Pixels themed arcade at last year’s SDCC) the first trailer for Adam Sandler’s Pixels has finally hit the web.

In the film, “When aliens misinterpret video feeds of classic arcade games as a declaration of war, they attack the Earth in the form of the video games.”

I’ve never been a big fan of Sandler’s work (I think that Click may be the last Sandler film that I saw), but being that this one is video game related, it’s sure going to be hard to avoid. This trailer doesn’t do all that much for me (though it does have a cool premise), but I get an Evolution vibe from the film, which can (hopefully) only be a good thing.

What do you think? Are you more interested in the film because of its video game tie-in? Did you find yourself laughing at the trailer? Be sure to let us know! Pixels hits theatres on July 24th!

Briefly: If you weren’t already sick of buying Square-Enix‘s stellar Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy X-2, you’ll soon be able to pick the games up all over again for your shiny year-and-a-half old PS4.

Sure, the remaster just hit PS3 and Vita back in December (which I bough and still haven’t touched), and now Square-Enix has revealed that the PS4 version will be available on May 12th.

Does anybody else feel like half of the PS4’s library is rereleases at this point?

The PS4 edition WILL include cross-save functionality, so if you’ve already started on the PS3 or Vita, you won’t be out of luck. In this edition, you’ll also be able to switch between the original and remastered soundtracks on the fly, which is actually pretty rad.

Will you listen to my story again on May 12th? Or are you sitting this one out? Sound out below!

Briefly: We still don’t know if we’ll ever get a chance to play it, but Pokkén Tournament sure looks to be shaping up nicely.

A new trailer for the game debuted at this year’s Japan Amusement Expo, and while it reveals no new characters (and few other surprises), the 60FPS video offers a gorgeous look at the upcoming fighter.

Take a look at the trailer below, and let us know what you think. Currently, Pokkén Tournaments is confirmed only for Japanses arcades. Don’t you miss arcades?

Idea Factory has announced that pre-orders for the collector’s edition of Hyperdevotion Noire are now available worldwide. Launching on February 24th exclusively on the company’s online store, this special edition will come packaged with all kinds of Gamindustri goodness to celebrate the goddess of Lastation.

The Collector’s Edition includes:

– Hyperdevotion Noire: Goddess Black Heart for the PlayStation®Vita system
– “XOXO Noire” Wall Scroll
– Hyperdevotion Noire: Goddess Black Heart Illustration Book
– Collector’s Box
– Reversible Cover Sleeve Art

Any Hyperdimension collectors out there? If so, I don’t have to tell you that these will go fast, so unless you want your life to be full of regret as you watch prices rise on eBay, I’d say you need to jump on this. In the meantime, watch out for more information on this SRPG spinoff as the release draws nearer.

Gamindustri is on the brink of collapse. The four goddesses that serve as this land’s protectors have been defeated by the ASIC, an evil organization that has grown in power by securing their shares using pirated gaming software. The last CPU standing to face this threat is powerless to stop them, forcing her to flee as her sister and friends remain captured for the next three years. Pretty dark, huh? It’s probably the last thing you would expect from the sequel to one of the surprise highlights of 2014, primarily because of its cheery, often silly take on the video game industry. Yet, in many ways, Hyperdimension Neptunia: Re;Birth 2 creates a completely different tone, sacrificing some of this over the top humor for a more serious take on these characters that took me by surprise last year. With so much of the original’s charm relying on its unique premise and script though, can the world of Neptunia thrive without it?

2014-10-07-110530IF and Nepgear going nowhere.

Re;Birth 2 places gamers in the very capable knee socks of Nepgear, the little sister of the original’s hyperactive protagonist. In comparison, Ge-Ge is much more mature, (despite being the “little” sister,) taking her duties as a CPU Candidate, (or the next Goddess in line to rule her home of Planeptune,) very seriously. Even still, her insecurities shine through most of the story, often worrying about escaping her sister’s shadow, while regaining the confidence it will take to save the goddesses that were so soundly defeated. With familiar faces such as IF and Compa from the original lending a hand, a huge cast of party members both new and old, and the addition of the other three CPU Candidates in the form of Lastation’s Uni and Lowee’s Rom and Ram fighting to save their siblings however, and the fight for Gamindustri’s future seems a lot less hopeless.

RE2_battle (8)Rom takes the spotlight in her HDD Form.

Or at least, that’s until you start playing, because the opening hours of Re;Birth 2 can be absolutely brutal. Making a complete 180 compared to its predecessor, which eased us into its fights before spiking about half way through, the sequel doesn’t play around. I came this close to losing the first tutorial boss fight, having to actually use strategy, items and stat boosts to eek out a win. Who would have thought!? Oddly enough, experience points start rising through the roof while fights get easier as the game progresses, making the experience more of a breeze as you push through the hazing of the early moments. You have to prove you really want it!

Either way, it becomes less of an issue when battles are not only a blast to play, but when the game can be customized to fit your play style! In our review of the original, we went into detail about the real time battle system and the Remake System, which allowed players to customize their game play experience if they had the items needed to unlock them, (give it a read, here!) In short, each character, weapon and attack has a certain attack range and a radius in which they can be moved. Every enemy that falls into that range can be hit with one of four types of attacks, which include special attacks, power attacks, break attacks, (that lower enemy shields,) and rush attacks, (multi hit attacks that build up the EX Meter, which adds bonus and signature abilities.)What makes battle even more fun this time around, (aside from the increase from three party members on the field to four,) is that more of the team wields a wider variety of attack types, namely Uni, Rom and Ram being able to attack at long range. To top it off, when late game abilities become available, these jaw dropping sequences range from badass action sequences, to some exciting attacks that reference some of our favorite niche games. It’s just too bad that the game can’t often keep up with this much awesome, causing the framerate to drop to a crawl when things get especially hectic.

RB2_battle (3)Cave’s EX Attack drops jaws as fast as the framerate.

If using these abilities makes the game too easy, or if that newest boss is just too hard to beat. Remaking the game can adjust the difficulty, unlock new items, dungeons and weapons, or even change mechanics like reducing the amount of time it takes to build up the EX Meter. As a far cry from the PS3 version that this title is based on, both mechanics are what holds the core of the game together, helping game stay addicting throughout its 25 hour plus story on a first run.

Still, even though all of these features are great, they’re way too familiar. Oddly enough, it seems like Nepgear’s primary flaw is trying to be too much like her sister! Re;Birth 2‘s biggest sin is the absurdly large amount of reused content it took from the first game. Enemies, some music, whole environments and many of the voice clips are completely ripped from the first title, (with some dungeons even being duplicates from THIS game,) oftentimes making the latest in the series feel more like an expansion than a sequel. The point and click map is mostly unchanged, complete with NPCs who you choose to talk to on a menu. While often serving as humorous takes on popular game characters, (Snake Hayter, Maryo and Monobear come to mind,) talking to them on a map screen isn’t the same as meeting them in a full fledged environment. While I appreciated the streamlined nature of these interactions originally, I’ve fallen in love with Gamindustri so much, that I wish I could delve into it outside of the various dungeons.

RB2_battle (8)Guess what game this girl is based on? (Hint: pick your eyes up.)

In the end though, what I thought would be this game’s biggest weakness became my absolute favorite part of it. Yes, Neptune is a fantastic protagonist, so much so that I named her the number 2 waifu of 2014 thanks to her off the wall, self aware, airhead personality. When I saw Nepgear as such a serious straight shooter, I expected the game to be less enjoyable because of it. As the game went on however, I became really attached to the little sisters, making their journey from scared, lonely sidekicks, to powerful, confident and heroic goddesses. Be warned, the slapstick and fan service is kept to a bare minimum, (the latter of which was more overbearing and unnecessary than anything else if you ask me,) but what what we got in its place was an exhilarating story to experience, introducing a level of character development that was nearly non-existent when Neptune took the lead. Now, I have trouble imagining another game without Nepgear in the lead. Sadly, I’m fully aware that this will likely be the case going forward. Still, for every serious moment, you have characters like Broccoli healing her team by vomiting a smiling pile from her eyes, so there’s that.

RB2_battle (4)Stay out of the splash zone.

I can talk all day about everything that I love about Hyperdimension Neptunia: Re;Birth 2, but we only have so much bandwidth. What I will say, is that this sequel expands on the hilarious, yet mostly shallow narrative of the first game, creating a much deeper story that tackles themes such as coming of age, finding one’s own identity, and even video game piracy in a fun, lighthearted way. Features like the Stella Dungeon, where you send the titular character out to explore areas in real time in order to uncover special items, over a half a dozen endings, a new game plus feature and a variety of secret characters put the title over the top, and by all accounts, is a superior game to the original. Sadly, the technical issues and the overabundance of recycled content hurt the final impression, but not enough to keep Re;Birth 2 from being the best game of 2015 so far. Sure, it’s the first game I’ve played in 2015, but forget semantics, because Nepgear and the girls are starting the year off strong.

tl;dr

+ The CPU Candidates take center stage in a bigger way, with more party members, teammates on the field, and a huge amount of post game content.

+ Combat is as addicting as ever, with jaw dropping abilities that will keep you coming back.

+ A game that can be catered to your needs, thanks to the flexible Remake System.

+ A much more in depth story that sacrifices some humor for character development while still staying lighthearted, most of which is voiced in dual audio.

Way too much of the content is ripped straight from its prequel, some of which is repeated multiple times within THIS game.

Technical issues range in severity, from lips not moving during dialogue sections to massive slowdown during huge sequences.

While more streamlined, it’s about time we replace the point and click map with a fully explorable Gamindustri.

Final Score: 4.25/5

After so many years and completely missing out on the core version of the latest Monster Hunter title, the recently announced release date of February 13th can’t come soon enough. To help hold us over, Capcom released a demo that gives us a taste of how we can expect to spend the next couple years of our lives, complete with the full weapon set and three new monsters to hunt. We took the time to check out what new features this brief download has to offer, which surprised us enough to keep even veteran hunters on their toes.

In an attempt to cater to both new and old hunters alike, this preview offers both beginner and expert levels of difficulties, in addition to in-game tutorials to explain the pros and cons of the weapon you choose. Every weapon is accounted for, including the new Insect Staff and Charge Blade, giving pros a chance to get accustomed to these new tools before the serious adventures begin. Yet, with the Great Jaggi, Tetsucabra, and Gore Magala on the prowl, they serve as all the practice you need if you hope to survive the dangers of the wild.

MH4U_TGS14_01
Starting with the Charge Blade, this weapon will feel familiar to anyone who used the Switch Axe in the past. Taking two forms, its standard stance is the sword and shield, building up energy with each successful attack. When the blade is fully charged, attaching the shield to the sword turns it into a powerful axe, releasing all of the built up power into a series of crushing blows. If you’re feeling a little more crafty, the Insect Staff feels like a more offense focused version of the Hunting Horn. While the double sided blade does a fair share of damage on its own, its true strength lies with its ability to send a pet insect flying at enemy monsters, absorbing status boosting effects on contact. With the ability to drain attack strength, defensive boosts, replenish stamina and restore health, this weapon has a level of versatility that most others lack, making it one to watch as the hunts get tougher.

That’s not to suggest that the demo hunts aren’t tough, especially when it comes to fighting Gore Magala. This destructive beast shoots and guards itself with a stamina draining black mist that forces players to strike carefully. But in my playthroughs, no matter how many times I broke its wings, its head or cut off its tail, this resilient opponent just wouldn’t die within the time limit, while making sure to knock out a couple of my lives in the process. It wasn’t until I took advantage of the climbing, jumping and air attack features that I was finally able to claim victory. By stalking prey from above, MH4 introduces the ability to land powerful strikes from the skies. Once weak enough, the best course of action is often to either climb, or jump on the monster’s back, and hack away as if your life depended on it. Adding a new level of depth and unpredictability to the tried and true formula, pulling these moves off managed to surprise even an old vet like me. But if that still doesn’t work, you can always hop online or get some friends together to take it on as a team!

MH4U_11_bmp_jpgcopy

Finally being able to get a taste of the fourth game has left me wanting so much more. The more dynamic fights, new weapons and tough as nails monsters keep us coming back for more, with enough familiarity to make our playtime feel right at home. Keep your eyes peeled for our full review as we get some time with the final release, and let us know what features you’re most looking forward to!

Being Vice President of the world sounds like it would be a pretty sweet gig. Everyone has to do what you say, you can boss everyone around, and it would make you the most powerful person on the planet (aside from the President, of course.) But between all the unearned vacations, publicity events and empty promises, you just might have to work on occasion, especially when it comes to saving the planet that elected you.

Citizens of Earth does just this, putting players in control of the newly elected VP in a turn based RPG seeped in classic gaming roots. During his first vacation, (the day after he was elected,) the bane of the Western world in the form of protesters show up at his door. After getting his mother and brother to get rid of them, it’s clear that there’s more going on than simple political discourse. When stop signs, coffee machines, and bears made of honey come to life and begin attacking the adoring public, it’s up to the honorable vice leader to set things right.

CoE_Screenshots (5)

As someone of such high importance however, you can’t expect him to get his hands dirty when it comes to the actual Earth defending, which is where the loyal citizens come in. Using his expert campaigning skills, up to 40 different characters can be recruited, each with unique jobs, skills and combat abilities that help in and outside of battle. While simple, the turn based battle system finds a unique way to put these skills to good use. Using three party members at a time to fight, each has two basic attack types. Standard attacks can be performed without penalty, while building up one point of energy needed for special moves. These special moves need a certain amount of energy to initiate, but when they typically deal out huge damage, status effects, or healing bonuses for your team, it’s clear that the cost is well worth it.

Aside from the energy system though, this might sound like your typical RPG conventions that have been done to death for close to three decades. What makes Citizens of Earth stand out that makes it a must play for a long time role playing aficionado? For starters, each member gives bonus stats to whoever they’re fighting with. Adding depth to the level system, each character can be customized to a degree by having the right team members with them to fit the stat you want to raise.

In addition, the experience earned unlocks more than just stat points and new attacks. EXP earned in battle also goes towards upgrading the citizen’s talent, often related to their day job. If you recruit the baker for example, his shop will have better healing items as he becomes stronger. The pilot can teleport you to a larger variety of areas. The cop gives you extra bounties to hunt. Get the picture? When you consider that there are 40 citizens to level, part of the fun is seeing how their abilities can help you both in and out of combat.

CoE_Screenshots (114)

Such a daunting task sounds like it can be overwhelming, and honestly, it was at first. It’s disheartening seeing your current party level up so high, then try to switch them out, only to have the newbies be too weak to compete. As the game progresses though, this problem becomes alleviated thanks to a few lenient features the game has included. First, the VP can restart a battle and change up the party, allowing him to throw in a strong party member to help boost the weaker ones. Second, KO’d party members still gain EXP, so having to scramble for your revive items isn’t as important, especially when they gain all of their health upon leveling up. Lastly, once the Teacher is recruited, unused party members can be put into class, leveling them up over time. It still can be a little more time consuming than I would have liked, but it’s also completely optional.

Aside from the game play, Citizens of Earth stands out even more with its unique presentation. Its humor, off the wall enemies, (smiling cops? Bubble Bees? Stop Vines?), and 2D navigation with enemies on the map are highly reminiscent of Earthbound, which is completed by a nearly fully voiced script and a political cartoon inspired art style. The only thing more charming than the hammy delivery of everything the VP does, is the bright, vibrant world filled with on screen enemies, (that can be ambushed and instantly killed if you’re strong enough,) potential party members and NPCs that bring the world to life. If nothing else, this title will surely make you smile across its story mode.

CoE_Screenshots (84)

Yet, its biggest shortcoming brings it down pretty hard, which is the overall speed of the game. My enthusiasm to compete the adventure took a dive after experiencing how slow everything moves. Battles take a long time to start, which isn’t helped by enemies that either absorb attacks, constantly call for reinforcements, or completely heal, making me dread fighting certain enemies. Imagine fighting basic enemies for close to 10 minutes because you want your weaker teammates to level up, but the enemy keeps healing when on the verge of death? Making the campaign sour even more are the constant load times, slowing the game to a crawl. When entering buildings begins to feel tedious, it becomes an obvious issue.

Yes, Citizens of Earth won’t reinvent the wheel, but that’s not what it’s trying to do. Serving as a delightful throwback to some of the greatest RPGs of yesteryear, it does enough to inject its own style, personality and unique mechanics to make it stand out to even the most jaded gamer. Even still, the slow pace of the fights, their generally basic mechanics, and constant loading times cause the VP to fall from grace. Even still, if you’re in need of an old school RPG with modern sensibilities, you can’t go wrong with this ticket.

Final Score: 3.5/5

I’m not going to start with too much fluff, because the first Nintendo Direct of the new year speaks for itself. Majoras Mask New 3DS is launching as well!!! I went from not wanting it to wanting two within 15 minutes. To paraphrase the wise words of Rebecca Black, which one shall I take!?

So… the relief I felt from being able to save money post holidays as all but disappeared considering nearly everything shown was announced between now and May. Which New 3DS will you pre-order today? Which games will you pick up? Where are you planning to sell your body to afford all of this, and can I join you? My body will have to be ready.

Sports stars and comic book superheroes are larger-than-life heroes, reminiscent of legendary Greek myth. They appear as supreme beings who rise above the common man, and they can inspire us to be our best even when they themselves often tend to be the worst. (Fuck you, Ray Rice.) Professional wrestling takes this aspect of sports and blows it up to insane proportions. So it was only natural we come full circle and transform them back into ancient warriors, right? Right? Or am I just high?

From UPROXX, WWE Immortals is an upcoming mobile game for iOS and Android on January 15th. Developed by Mortal Kombat‘s NetherRealm Studios, it appropriately has a modern Mortal Kombat or Injustice: Gods Among Us vibe that I’m totally digging. Yet, it is not coming out on PC, Xbox One, Ps4, or the Wii U, and when you see the promotional art you will wonder why the hell not.

First, check out John Cena who is practically cosplaying as Superman. We’ve gone so far past joking John Cena as being Superman that at this point he just straight up is. He even has is hokey OK sign in a diamond pattern on his chest!

WWE/Warner Bros. Interactive

Now check out the other guys! Sheamus as a Celtic barbarian, Big Show as, uh, another barbarian, the Bella Twins with differing breast sizes as a Kitana/Milana-type duo. I’m dying to see what Daniel Bryan looks like.

wlimmortals3 wlimmortals4 wlimmortals5

Honestly? I would be all over this game if it weren’t mobile. With this kind of detail and imagination, it is criminal it isn’t on home consoles or PC. Modern fighting games are a mixed bag, but if there’s anything to dig about them today it’s the outrageous costume aesthetics. “Epic” is an overused word but applied to fighting games and the absurdity just makes me smile.

Want proof? Check out The Rock and Brock Lesnar — could they be the final bosses? (Nah, maybe that would most likely be Vince McMahon.) They look at possessed golems. Hell, Brock Lesnar, who was an inspiration for the titans of Attack on Titan, just straight-up looks like a titan here!

wlimmortals6 wlimmortals7

Damn it, do you know how amazing CM Punk would have looked? That dude could have been a punk rock ninja. Fuck it, I’m still buying this game.

Briefly: Josh went hands on with the gorgeous-looking Kirby and the Rainbow Curse back at E3 in June. The game acts as a successor to early DS title Kirby’s Canvas Curse, but with a new (and charming) art style, a ton of new gameplay elements, and its all coming to us on a home console instead of a handheld.

A new Japanese overview trailer has just been released for the title, and while I obviously don’t understand a word of it, it does show off which Amiibo will be compatible with the anticipated sequel. You won’t have a huge number of figures to utilize here, but the game is compatible with Kirby, Meta Knight, and King Dedede. Each figure unlocks a special power-up that can be used once per day.

You can take a look at the overview trailer, which shows off some new new gameplay features, below, and be sure to let us know what you think! As for Amiibo, are you still hunting? Will you be picking up Meta Knight and Dedede? Sound out below!

It’s the season of giving, and what better way to start it with Halo 5: Guardians.

image001

To start, I must say: After more than a month of dealing with the troubles in the Master Chief Collection, coupled with what looked like to be Call of Duty inspired gameplay, I can say I was not as excited for Halo 5 as I could have been. Don’t get me wrong, it was always going to be a day-one purchase, but I could not shake the doubt I had regarding the game’s multiplayer. To those still worrying about Halo 5‘s multiplayer, I say this: wait until you play it before ostracizing it on grounds that “it isn’t Halo,” because let me tell you, Halo 5: Guardians is something to behold for the Halo franchise.

Let me begin with the most paramount changes from Halo 4 to Halo 5. Players will immediately realize a transition to a time before Halo: Reach, a time where every player had even spawns. This means no classes, no abilities other players don’t have, no gun customization or traits; just plain even battlegrounds. As a fan of the franchise since the beginning, this is huge. For the first week of the Beta, players will be treated to two maps with Team Slayer being the gametype. Players may recognize one of them to be the highly anticipated remake of Midship from Halo 2.

H5-MP-Beta-Truth-No-Retreat

The fact that my first match was played on Truth may have had something to do with it, but for the first few minutes on the game, I was able to make a steady transition to Halo 5‘s gameplay, something that took me by surprise. Perhaps the newest and most infamous addition you’ll find in Halo 5 is ADS (Aim Down Sights). This trait is typically found in arcade-like shooters and is most widely recognized in titles such as Call of Duty and Battlefield. The fact that ADS was implemented into Halo made some fans furious, claiming that 343i was conforming to generic gameplay traits. However, after spending some time with Halo 5, I can say ADS does not bother me nearly as much as I thought it would. In fact, I’m not ashamed to say that I kinda like it.

H5-MP-Beta-Empire-Gang-Fight

Aiming down the sights in Halo 5 isn’t typical to generic FPS’. For example, in the weapons available in the beta, none of them include iron sights. Instead, when a spartan aims down a sight, a hologram-like HUD will appear above you’re weapon with a steady crosshair for you to use. This is especially noticeable for both the Magnum, Assault Rifle, and Battle Rifle. However, there is little change in scoping in when using the DMR and Sniper Rifle.

Starting with Halo 2, fans have always had to adjust with the shift in controls from one Halo title to the next. Halo 5 is no different. Here’s a peek at the default controls for the Beta. Take notice to the armor abilities listed in the diagram below:

Halo 5 Guardians Multiplayer Beta Default Controls

As you can see, along with the slight changes from traditional controls, players will also have every Spartan Ability at spawn. Curious to know just what each ability is? Glad you asked:

Halo 5 Guardians Multiplayer Beta Spartan Abilities

After playing a few rounds, I must say using the Thruster Pack in combination with the Clamber ability adds another layer to gameplay. This brings me to the maps. Both Empire and Truth, maps currently in the beta, are tremendously fun. I have to give a shout out to Quinn DelHoyo and his crew for creating two stellar Halo maps. It wasn’t long after my second or third match that I started using some of the new Spartan Abilities. What’s awesome is that each ability felt natural to the map. This is important because not one ability nor one aspect of the two maps felt forced to fit a puzzle. In fact, one can just sprint around and not use any other Spartan Ability and still be in a position to win. It’s up to the player to figure out when and if they should use a ability or not.

Halo 5: Guardians‘ release date has yet to be announced, but one can expect the title to be out fall of 2015. The game still has a ways to go, but it’s clear 343 Industries is on the right track.

It looks like it’s Etrian Odyssey’s turn to get the Mystery Dungeon treatment.

In a somewhat meta announcement, Atlus announced that Etrain Dungeon will be making its Western debut in Spring 2015! This dungeon crawling RPG spinoff of a dungeon crawling RPG will feature all of the customization, loot gathering and monster slaying you would expect from one of the core games in the series, but with the top down perspective, randomly generated dungeons, and party building that comes with any game with Mystery Dungeon in the title.

This is great news for fans of both series, especially when games of this nature are far from a sure thing when getting localized. Everything from Chocobos to Pokemon have received similar treatment in various forms, and not even huge franchises like those have had every Dungeon game brought over. So needless to say, this announcement will be like Christmas come early for some.

Take a look at the details from the official press release below, then let us know what game you hope gets the Dungeon treatment in the comments!

Main features in Etrian Mystery Dungeon include:
Infinite Dungeons to Explore – Etrian Mystery Dungeon incorporates the random map feature, which changes the floor terrain each time a player enters the dungeon. This core mechanic, inherited from the Mystery Dungeon series, challenges the players with a new maze and stronger monsters every time, offering them unlimited replayability!
Attention to Detail – The Etrian Odyssey tradition of party customization is in full effect for Etrian Mystery Dungeon. After the first journey as a Landsknecht, players can freely choose their party of 4 from up to 10 different class types. While each class has a unique skill set of its own, characters can also unlock new skills through skill trees.
Not Your Grandfather’s Combat – The unique perspective in Etrian Mystery Dungeon means that special care will have to be given when selecting party members and upgrading their abilities. With dungeons chock full of enemies and all the loot and money collected at stake, being 100 percent certain in your party’s abilities is crucial for making it out alive.

I know, I know, we’re all sad the series has ended. Now, whether you liked the series finale or not, fans of the show should be pleased to hear that they can continue their fandom with Sons of Anarchy: The Prospect. The game is set to episodic, with the first episode introducing games into the SoA world, show locations, and members of a previously unknown chapter.

The Prospect is currently being developed by Orpheus and Silverback Games, but don’t worry, Kevin Sutter and his creative team are also on board for the title.

The game is set to release on phones and tablets early 2015.

Atlus revealed what many of us were expecting. Like our Eastern counterparts, the West will also get to sink their teeth into a Playstation 4 version of Persona 5 when it releases alongside its PS3 counterpart in 2015.

While little is known about the highly anticipated sequel to one of the most popular Japanese RPGs on the market, the reputation of the monster collection/teenager simulation dungeon crawler has many a Senpai on baited breath waiting for any information to come to light. SPOILER ALERT: It will contain a Velvet Room and Personas, (unconfirmed, but come on!)

When Persona 5 was announced, the only thing more surprising than the announcement itself was that it was only listed for Playstation 3. At the time, it didn’t sound like too much of a crazy idea, considering the untested, unproven Playstation 4 wasn’t as safe of an investment compared to its well established predecessor. Since then, the PS4 has inexplicably sold over 10 million units in less than a year, many of which have been bought off of the backs of PS3 trade ins. Hey, everyone else is releasing PS3 games on PS4, why not do a simultaneous launch?

Excited for Persona 5? Let us know what your favorite series moments are in the comments!
