SXSW is more than just a film festival. The enormity of the annual event also includes world class musical acts, celebrity keynote speakers, informative tech conferences, and top-notch stand-up comedy shows. Yet, while the majority of laughter tends to come from the countless comedians performing all throughout downtown Austin, TX, I’m not sure if anything could compare to the riotous reaction from the crowd that brought down the Paramount Theater during the world premiere of Kay Cannon’s Blockers.

Each in a uniquely different situation, three lifelong best friends (Kathryn Newton, Geraldine Viswanathan and Gideon Adlon) decide to form a “sex pact” by agreeing to lose their virginity on Prom night. However, things get complicated when their overbearing parents (Leslie Mann, John Cena and Ike Barinholtz) discover the girls’ promiscuous intentions and embark on an outrageous adventure to put an end to the pact. Will these parents be able to stop their daughters in time, or will they realize the lunacy of their behavior?

Back in 1999 we were given a similarly themed comedy from a completely different male perspective with the instant-classic American Pie. Director Kay Cannon and sibling writers Jim & Brian Kehoe make their intention clear from the onset of the film, poking fun at society’s glaring double-standard when it comes to losing your virginity. They cater to this fact by embellishing the craziness of these parents who feel obligated to protect their daughters from this landmark event. It’s a strong stance and a valiant message that serves as the film’s most prominent component. There are two dueling storylines at work, that of the teenagers and their excitement to cross over into adulthood, and that of their parents who wish to suspend this inevitable transition. Blockers is at its best when the teens are in their element, playfully mocking the magnitude of losing their virginity with raunchy dialogue and carefree actions. Yet, the irritating counterpart of Leslie Mann, John Cena and Ike Barinholtz’s characters overshadow Blockers’ finer moments. This R-rated comedy fails to create cleverly designed humor and relies mainly on vulgarity, shock-value and even the overdone full-frontal male nudity (so be warned). And through it all Blockers fails to break any new ground with its well-intended and unique perspective, which culminates in a sadly missed opportunity for director Kay Cannon and everyone else involved.

Briefly: Following the first roster reveals from back at E3, and the Goldberg reveal trailer from earlier in June, WWE has officially announced the superstar that will grace the cover of this year’s WWE 2K17.

With the heavy Goldberg focus in the game’s trailer and marketing thus far, many fans were expecting to see the superstar (who didn’t have the greatest WWE run, per se) on the cover of this year’s anticipated title.

Instead, we’ll see The Beast himself, Brock Lesnar.

Naturally, Lesnar seems pretty happy about the news:

WWE notes that “The selection also marks the first time that Lesnar will be the sole Superstar appearing on a WWE video game cover.”

As much as I’m not a fan of Lesnar, featuring the part-timer on this year’s cover is likely the smartest move that WWE and 2K could have made. Lesnar (and his theme music) is returning for another MMA bout with UFC 200 on July 9th, and I’d imagine that a lot of WWE fans will be tuning into the Pay-Per-View to see The Beast face Mark Hunt, and I’d also imagine that, win or lose, seeing Lesnar in the octagon will garner a lot of interest for WWE, and possibly its latest video game.

2K has not revealed whether or not its beloved Showcase mode will return (and whether or not Lesnar will be the focus), but if there’s anything I’d ask for, it’d be an expanded and less repetitive career mode.

Immediately righting one of the biggest wrongs of last year’s WWE 2K16, Sasha Banks has been confirmed as being part of the roster in the upcoming WWE 2K17 via painting!

After a slew of criticism was leveled at the previous game for not including the fan favorite “Four Horsewomen,” including Sasha, Becky Lynch, Charlotte and Bayley, despite having the biggest NXT roster of developmental Superstars to date, being in the midst of the company’s “Diva’s Revolution” reboot of their floundering women’s division didn’t help matters much. After the controversy of inconcequential characters like Blake and Murphy getting in ahead of the most popular women in the company,  it’s good to see that the developers are quick to ease any leftover concerns their fans might have. Plus, if Sasha is confirmed, it won’t be long before the other three girls are too.

While not as surprising, The Ultimate Warrior and John Cena were both confirmed at the 2K booth as well, with longtime WWE artist, Rob Schamberger, painting their images live as what has to be one of the most creative reveals we’ve ever seen. Not bad at all considering you’re working while surrounded by tens of thousands of people!

E3 2016 WWE 2K17

Who else do you hope makes the cut in the upcoming wrestling title? With legends like Goldberg on their way, it doesn’t look like anyone is off the table.

Once again I am joined by Geekscape Games co-hosts (and wrestling fans) Juan and Josh as we breakdown not one but TWO pay-per-views happening this weekend. First we talk NXT Takeover Brooklyn and then the 2nd biggest WWE Pay-Per-View of the year… Wrestlemania.

This is another wrestling packed episode. Once again I’m joined by some Geekscape Games co-hosts. This time Wrestling fans (and gaming enthusiasts) Juan Carlos and Joshua Jackson join me to discuss what we think is gonna happen at Wrestlemania, Who should be moving up the roster from NXT and who in general deserves more crowd reactions. Worry not non-Wrestling fans, next week it’ll be back to the same old bullshit that you know and love from the Saint Mort Show.

Sports stars and comic book superheroes are larger-than-life heroes, reminiscent of legendary Greek myth. They appear as supreme beings who rise above the common man, and they can inspire us to be our best even when they themselves often tend to be the worst. (Fuck you, Ray Rice.) Professional wrestling takes this aspect of sports and blows it up to insane proportions. So it was only natural we come full circle and transform them back into ancient warriors, right? Right? Or am I just high?

From UPROXX, WWE Immortals is an upcoming mobile game for iOS and Android on January 15th. Developed by Mortal Kombat‘s NetherRealm Studios, it appropriately has a modern Mortal Kombat or Injustice: Gods Among Us vibe that I’m totally digging. Yet, it is not coming out on PC, Xbox One, Ps4, or the Wii U, and when you see the promotional art you will wonder why the hell not.

First, check out John Cena who is practically cosplaying as Superman. We’ve gone so far past joking John Cena as being Superman that at this point he just straight up is. He even has is hokey OK sign in a diamond pattern on his chest!

WWE/Warner Bros. Interactive

Now check out the other guys! Sheamus as a Celtic barbarian, Big Show as, uh, another barbarian, the Bella Twins with differing breast sizes as a Kitana/Milana-type duo. I’m dying to see what Daniel Bryan looks like.

Honestly? I would be all over this game if it weren’t mobile. With this kind of detail and imagination, it is criminal it isn’t on home consoles or PC. Modern fighting games are a mixed bag, but if there’s anything to dig about them today it’s the outrageous costume aesthetics. “Epic” is an overused word but applied to fighting games and the absurdity just makes me smile.

Want proof? Check out The Rock and Brock Lesnar — could they be the final bosses? (Nah, maybe that would most likely be Vince McMahon.) They look at possessed golems. Hell, Brock Lesnar, who was an inspiration for the titans of Attack on Titan, just straight-up looks like a titan here!

Damn it, do you know how amazing CM Punk would have looked? That dude could have been a punk rock ninja. Fuck it, I’m still buying this game.

If 2K wanted to send a message with their first fully developed wrestling title under their name, then message received.

For the first time in his long, storied career, Sting, the icon of WCW, (and TNA I guess…), will step foot in a WWE ring! Only in this case, it will be in the video game realm of WWE 2K15 in the form of pre order DLC.

Featuring both the early 90’s “surfer” Sting as well as the “Crow” Sting that would become his trademark look, the wrestling legend will join a roster featuring many of today’s biggest talent, such as cover boy, John Cena, Daniel Bryan and Bray Wyatt. Nearly any dream match you’ll ever want to put together can now be possible, even the long clamored for showdown between Sting and The Undertaker. Considering recent events, that might be the closest we’ll ever get to actually seeing the match play out!

But what makes this announcement more interesting is that after years of staunchly avoiding the WWE, this is the first official appearence he’s made for the company since becoming a free agent last year. Aside from an unannounced ten second clip about the Ultimate Warrior after his passing, (RIP), seeing new Sting content in anything related to Vince McMahon’s company is sure to excite wrestling fans both new and old. Besides, everyone who’s appeared before signing a contract in the past, (Brock Lesnar, Ultimate Warrior), have returned within that year. Can the same be said for Sting? Only time will tell, but I’m crossing my fingers.

Check out Sting’s reveal trailer below and let us know if this will sway your decision to step back into the ring. WWE 2K15 will release for both current and last gen consoles this fall!
