In this second collection of the series BRIAN K. VAUGHAN calls ‘a killer crime book with a very sharp hook,’ former hitman Markham has relocated to Los Angeles, where he continues his efforts to balance the scales by saving people instead of killing them. But try as he might, Markham can’t outrun his dark past. If you like THIEF OF THIEVES and FATALE, you’ll love NEAR DEATH.

We’ve already seen set photos and a number of other leaked images, but Fox today released the first official image for the upcoming X-Men Origins: Wolverine sequel. What do you think?

“Shit that guy is ripped” is the first thing that came into my mind. If The Wolverine turns out half as good as Hugh Jackman looks here, it will absolutely blow the abysmal first film out of the water.

Agent Phil Coulson recently made his comic debut in the Battle Scars mini-series alongside Marcus Johnson/Nick Fury Jr. (aka Sam Jackson edition Nick Fury), and now it appears that Agent Coulson will be one of the central characters featured in this October’s Marvel NOW! Point One. Phil will appear in a story from the creative team of Nick Spencer (Ultimate Comics X-Men) and Luke Ross (Captain America), the details of which are currently unknown. We all want more Phil right? Or is it just me?

Looks like there have been a lot of leaks from this set! Earlier this week we showed you some set photos depicting a neat battle scene from the upcoming film. More set photos have made their way online thanks to ComicBookMovie.

Check them out below and let us know what you think!

This looks like quite a battle!

The current Divided We Fall storyline will see the Ultimate Universe debut of the Iron Patriot in Ultimate Comics Ultimates #19 this December. Earlier today Newsarama revealed the cover by Adi Granov . However, there is no word on just who is actually in the armor. Many are speculating that it just may be Captain America himself. Who do you think is suiting up later this year?

That’s right… you’re getting it early so I can get the word out on Bob’s Kickstarter campaign! Enjoy the second Geekscape of the day!

Robert J. Peterson joins me from CC2K Online to talk about his brand new novel The Odds, currently going through a Kickstarter campaign! The Odds sounds awesome, equal parts Big Trouble in Little China, Battle Royale and… chess! We also plug our upcoming Comikaze panel with producer Michael Uslan and actor Thomas Jane! And why not use this opportunity to discuss the problems with the Punisher movies? Does Robert think that they do anything right? Also, Jonathan explains the brand new, Muslim Green Lantern and explains why he deserves to be read! And Robert says that Keanu Reeve’s ‘Side by Side’ does a great job of exploring the discussion between film and digital!

Flixist managing editor Alex Katz joins me to talk about a ton of name changes! Star Trek 2 gets a name! G4 is getting rebranded in 2013! Wonder Woman is getting another crack at TV on the CW! Will Cloud Atlas be a giant mess or a giant accomplishment? Alex tells you why you should be playing ‘Horn’ on your iOS devices! PLUS! Will Doctor Strange be in Thor 2 and who should play him? And who should play Ant-Man while we’re at it?!?

After recording the show, I realize Clive Owen would make a pretty bad ass Doctor Strange and Sean William Scott could do a non-super adaptoid Eric O’Grady Ant-Man. Who else can you think of?

On Wednesday we gave you a look at Marvels latest mobile title, Avengers Initiative. The game released yesterday, and after putting a few hours into it and clearing the first campaign, I’ve got a pretty strong opinion on the title.

Note: Avengers Initiative is available for iOS as well as Android devices. The review is based on the iOS versions of the game, though the Android edition should offer a similar experience.

Intro Video

I was hooked on Avengers Initiative from the start. After a short loading screen, Nick Fury brings you up to speed with a very flashy and very sharp looking cutscene. The story is simple: a lot of baddies have escaped from the Vault, and it’s up to you to find them, fight them, and send them back where they belong.

We mentioned on Wednesday that the game takes an episodic approach (as explained in the story, simply too many villains have escaped for the team to stick together, each episode will have you playing a different hero). You buy the game for $6.99, you’ll get to play the first chapter featuring the Hulk, and subsequent episodes will be delivered free of charge. Telltale Games typically takes the same approach, and it works wonders for them (insert obligatory The Walking Dead praise here), Marvel has to be hoping for that same success.

In-Game

As you can see from our screenshots, the game looks great (especially on Apple’s retina devices). Hulk is extremely detailed, complete with a lot of polygons and some great textures. He even shows off some strong facial animations throughout the episode. This carries to other characters as well – each one looks fantastic. Sometimes it’s really hard to believe that visuals like this are being pushed from your cell phone. It sounds almost as good as it looks too, Avengers Initiative features some very strong voice acting and sound effects.

The game may look fresh, but gameplay wise, it feels more like a skin on a two year old title. Infinity Blade was released to much fanfare in 2010. The game was designed from the ground up for touchscreen devices: no virtual joysticks or buttons, just taps and swipes to control your onscreen hero. Combat has you doing the same, tapping and swiping to dodge and block your opponents advances, while you wait for an opening to strike.

Wendigo Fight

Now isn’t all bad: Infinity Blade and its sequel are fantastic, addicting titles. The developer could have done much worse when choosing a game to take inspiration from. Sadly however, some of Infinity Blade’s strongest and most addicting features are strangely absent from Avengers Initiative.

Your Infinity Blade hero is infinitely customizable. Every piece of armor, every weapon, and there is even jewelry to give you magic abilities and stat bonuses. You find items in chests, by defeating creatures, and with credit you’ve saved from battling multitudes of enemies. It makes the game exponentially more replayable as you strive to master all of the possible equipment. Avengers Initiative sees very little of this: Hulk has a few costumes you can purchase which give you stat bonuses, but the quantity and level of customizability is nothing compared to that of Infinity Blade. I’ve finished the Avengers Initiative campaign, and I honestly can’t see myself returning until another chapter is released.

Costume Screen

Another huge oversight by developer Wideload Games is iCloud support. With games like Infinity Blade and Batman: Arkham City Lockdown, I can jump into the game on whatever device I’m currently holding and not have to worry about it: if I play Infinity Blade on my phone while on the bus, I can open it on my iPad later and be in the exact same spot. By not including this, I’d have to run separate campaigns on each device, essentially meaning I’m going to end up playing Avengers Initiative on only one of them

Avengers Initiative is a lot of fun, and the title has some great presentation (though loading screens are sometimes a bit too frequent). The gameplay that Epic Games introduced with Infinity Blade works perfectly here, I simply wish that Wideload could have introduced some of their own innovations to the formula. Hopefully with the episodic nature of the title, they will build on what the game has to offer instead of simply throwing a new character into the same situations.

As mentioned above, the title is priced well at $6.99 (though it is plagued with a ton of in-app purchases). It’s a good buy at this level, had it been priced higher however, I wouldn’t be so sure.

Avengers Initiative scores a respectable 3/5

I’m a bad podcaster! That being said, I review “Lawless” and give my thoughts on the Breaking Bad season finale! I also take the opportunity to make fun of Breaking Bad fans who are complete spazzes. Walking Dead Episode 3 from Telltale Games is the game of the year so far! I ramble about music for a bit too long (forgive me). And goodbye to “Scalped”, an incredible comic book series!

I’m a huge fan of mobile games. More often than not I find myself away from home with nothing but my mobile phone.

Five years ago, that was a bad situation unless you were lucky enough to have a portable console with you. Oh how things change: I can now have dozens of AAA titles in my pocket, on a device that I always have with me anyways.

Hulk

Today Marvel gave us a look at Avengers Initiative. It’s a pretty smooth looking new title that takes Telltale’s approach to gaming – the game will be episodic. You purchase the title for $6.99, and later episodes will be delivered to you free of charge.

Tomorrow, us iOS and Android owners will step into the Hulk’s shoes. From the trailer (posted below) it appears as though a lot of villains are causing a lot of havoc. Nick Fury has made it your responsibility to stop them.

At first glance, Avengers Initiative looks remarkably similar to Epic Games’ Infinity Blade. While I’m a sucker for originality, I’m also a huge fan of that title. It’s perfectly suited for a touch screen, and rather than have to use a virtual joystick and fake buttons, you swipe and tap around, which leads to a much better and more natural experience. If Avengers Initiative can offer the same quality story and addicting gameplay that the Infinity Blade series does, Epic Games’ will have some serious competition on their hands.

The graphics look great, the sound seems solid, and the gameplay is tried and true. Check out Avengers Initiative on your mobile devices tomorrow, and look for our review in the upcoming days.

Deadline reports that ABC has ordered a pilot for a S.H.I.E.L.D television series.

Joss and Jed Whedon, and Maurissa Tancharoen (Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog, Spartacus: Gods of the Arena) are set to write the pilot, and Joss Whedon is set to direct (bearing scheduling conflicts). It had been known that Whedon was set to do a Marvel television project, and now it’s officially in the works.

As Deadline states, this is the first order for a live-action series based on the Marvel universe established in the recent films. No characters, plotlines, or information of any other sort have been revealed about the upcoming show but you can expect numerous S.H.I.E.L.D. affiliated characters from the comics. Production is set to start immediately, with no planned release date announced.

So, what are your thoughts? Excited? Glad that Whedon is returning to TV?

Joss Whedon

POWERS #11

POWERS is back! With the pilot for the POWERS TV show on FX filmed, the creators of the comic book return in full force! Do not miss this startling game-changer in the life of Christian Walker as the latest powers homicide case comes right to his front door, bringing utter tragedy!

Filming on Thor: The Dark World is currently under-way in England and thanks to some pics SuperHeroHype has received we might have our first glimpse of The Dark World! It could technically be anything from ruins to pieces of Asgard or maybe even a gateway to Svartalfheim? In any case the following images are from the set in Bourne Woods, UK.

Local residents received a letter that informed them that a movie called Thursday Morning would be filming from August through September. The letter contained the following:

“We will be establishing a fictional village set in another realm, with yurts and village like dressing in the bowl. The sequence involves a battle between two kingdoms, ending in our comic book hero arriving to save the day,” the letter read. “The sequence will involve approximately 300 extras who will arrive in the early hours prior to call time to go through costume and makeup.”

Thor: The Dark World stars Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins, Idris Elba, Zachary Levi, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje and Christopher Eccleston. It’s being directed by Alan Taylor and is set for release on November 8th, 2013.

Have you been reading Dark Avengers (the title formerly known as Thunderbolts)? Well, you should be definitely checking title out. There are some exciting things coming as writer Jeff Parker will be bringing the titles current era to an end. This December, the writer will once again be altering the status quo of the title well as bringing about the return of USAgent! Neal Edward will also be joining the title on art duties. Check out a few excerpts from an interview between Parker and Comic Book Resources below. This title is definitely one to keep an eye on. If you haven’t been keeping up on it I will highly recommend going back a few months and catching up. You will not be disappointed!

Discussing bringing the titles current era to an end:

The Timebolts come to a definitive conclusion that bookends the run from the time Luke Cage came on to run things. As you’ll see, “Thunderbolts” will shape what “Dark Avengers” becomes, the one grows out of the other. It’s going to be very different, but trust me and Neil. I know readers are anxious about the focus shifting, but remember when the Underbolts first arrived and no one wanted the focus to go to them? We’re keeping with our organic hand-offs. The tone and the types of thrills will feel familiar.

Regarding the new status quo:

It will have much the dynamic that “Thunderbolts” had, it’s still bad people being thrust into the role of heroes. I’m not so interested in the idea that they want to become better, but that sometimes circumstances give you a chance to go that way. You see this in the conclusion of the Thunderbolts super-arc, some characters that were pretty heinous when they arrived are doing some very noble things by the end.

On what USAgent’s role in the series will be:

Well, now the role to take is Captain Marvel! Moonstone likes to keep up with the times. We can change the books and go in wild directions, but she always finds the way to come along. And yes, USAgent will charge into the leadership role, but the question is, does he answer to just himself? The team gets separated at the beginning and really at that point wouldn’t care about being a team, but will have to to escape where they find themselves. This is a break-down and rebuilding foundation story where we start seeing what they’re really about.

On changing the series direction:

I’m so happy with the conclusion to this big story. It’s a big finale that brings together many threads we’ve had going for the past three years in what I think you’ll find a very satisfying way. Someone big and unstoppable is about to return and there are surprises with the Boss Cage character in the future. If you’ve been reading all along, there’s some big payoffs for you.

During Marvel’s X-Men panel at Toronto’s Fan Expo, it was announced that Ramon Perez, the artist of the Eisner Award winning Jim Henson’s Tale Of Sand (which you can see some of his art from below), will be joining the art team on Wolverine & The X-Men starting with a five issue arc that will take them to the savage land next January.

Perez is also the artist behind Marvel’s own John Carter: The Gods of Mars mini-series and has pencilled a number of one-shots and limited series for Marvel over the years, but this will be his first time doing an ongoing for Marvel. I dropped this title awhile ago and have only been picking up the tie-ins but with this announcement I may have to add this one back to my pull list.

Check out a first look at some of Perez’s pencils for issue #25 below [via iFanboy]:

You read it right. Sorry fans of Avengers Academy but this November school is out indefinitely. And it seems for now that Marvel is being a bit tight-lipped about just what’s going on with the characters after the final issue. Christos Cage replied to fans on Twitter with the following:

“The characters will still be around, in other hands. Can’t say much more.”

So, this could mean the title may be getting relaunched like many titles with the Marvel NOW! initiative or the characters may be appearing in other titles. I’m sure we will be hearing more over the next few months.

So, it was about a month ago at good ol’ San Diego Comic-Con that we first learned that Deadpool was getting his very own video game brought to us by High Moon Studios. But since then it’s been pretty quiet and we haven’t heard too much about it. Welp, it appears some screen shots and concept art was shown at this years GamesCom as well as a fact sheet written by the merc with a mouth himself. Check them out!

I, DEADPOOL, am here to tell you about all the awesomeness that is my new video game! That’s right – I’ve taken over High Moon Studios in order to develop the world’s first-ever video game dedicated to yours truly, ME – DEADPOOL! You may know me as the “Merc with a Mouth,” which means there will be plenty of ME talking to YOU in the game, along with ALL of my favorite things: katanas, big guns (and not just these amazing arm muscles – check!), hot chicks, cameos from some of my X-MEN friends (ooh, spandex!), chimichangas, bouncy houses, and of course…ME!!!

Joe Carnahan sat down and talked to The Radio Dan Show about his plans for a Daredevil movie that was supposed to happen until Fox pulled the cord. We also find out why he wanted to make the movie a period piece rather than set it in the present. Collider has hooked us up with a transcription on what was discussed.

On why there wasn’t enough time to bring his version to the screen:

I was brought in pretty late in the game, and my take probably didn’t help matters since they had an existing script. But I just thought that if you were going to do it, this was the way to go. This is the way that intrigued me…It was initially something I passed on because Christopher Nolan had done such a lovely job with Batman and unless you’re going to go after that trilogy, then that’s how you have to think. You can’t out-hurdle that, then what’s the point of trying? So it set the bar extraordinarily high, and I thought ‘Well, if we’re going to do this, let’s have a discussion about Hell’s Kitchen, and how it was really Hell’s Kitchen in the 70s,” so that got me really excited. But as I mentioned, the clock ticking and this kind of October drop-dead date, it wasn’t tenable. And having gone down this road in the past when you’re trying to write something and shoot it at the same time is disastrous, and I think you’d need an adequate amount of time to put that script together in the right way. My brother [Matthew Michael Carnahan (The Kingdom)] was interested in writing it with me, so we’ll see.

On why he thought a period piece for Daredevil would have been a good choice:

As I’m finishing my kind of reimagining of Death Wish, I think the 70s is figuring into my conscious and subconscious mind right now. I think it was the last time music and movies were just tremendous. We just cranked out some great stuff. I think that’s why the sizzle reel is able to be kind of abstract because people have such great fondness in their hearts for that decade, particularly the early part of that decade. I’m excited; you know the idea of having Daredevil on top of a building somewhere with the Serpico marquee in the background was enough, that image was enough, for me to want to make the movie.

Many fans weren’t too fond of the idea of another Daredevil film being brought to us by Fox until they found out about Carnahan’s attachment to the project. And after his sizzle reels were shown to us last night, giving us an idea on what the project would have been like, some of us are actually let down that it isn’t happening. Now, the big questions is…what will Marvel do with the man without fear?

With news breaking that Fox is going to let Daredevil’s rights revert back to Marvel director Joe Carnahan has decided to let us check out the sizzle reels that he used to present his vision to the studio of what his film would’ve been like. The reels are comprised of  footage from other movies and some comics art, and man does it look like we may have actually been getting an awesome Daredevil movie. Watching these kinds of makes me sad that Fox is letting go of the rights.

When Matt Fraction launched The Mighty Thor and Kieron Gillen took over on Thor they changed the title to Journey Into Mystery. We saw the series with Kid-Loki as the lead character go on to receive praise. So, what’s coming up next may receive some mixed reactions to say the least.  With the upcoming Marvel NOW! initiative, as of issue #646 Kathryn Immonen and Valerio Schiti will be taking over with a new lead character in the form of Sif replacing Kid Loki.

Editor Lauren Sankovich on the change in the lead character:

“We had it Loki-centric…going forward with #646 we wanted to mix it up a little bit,” Sankovich said, adding, “Sif’s been in the thick of it, she’s a warrior born, she’s got a lot of fight and verve and fire to her!”

Kathryn Immonen went on to say this about the title:

“We talked at length as far as what her story could be, and it came down to a single question: What does she want? For Sif, what she wants above all is to be a better warrior. How far would she go for that? She makes some terrible decisions and puts a lot of people in peril. One of the really interesting things about Sif to me is that she’s defined by absence, with her lover, Thor, and brother, Heimdall, always away from her. I see a similarity between Sif and Loki because neither of them can ever be Thor. I think that has more effect on her then she’ll admit. She’s been told she’s capable of anything, but at the end of the day, she will never be Thor. “

Not that this will surprise anyone but it is now official, Joss Whedon will write and direct Avengers 2. Disney CEO Bob Iger made the announcement today during a conference call. That wasn’t the only news he had though. He went on to say that Whedon will also help develop  the live-action drama series set within the Marvel cinematic universe that we previously reported.

With Avengers having made $1.46 billion since it’s release this news isn’t really shocking but still, THANK YOU Marvel for bringing back Whedon. His being involved with the live-action show also comes as great news. With Marvel’s catalogue of characters the possibilities are endless for this show.
