Last month Valiant Entertainment announced a nine-figure investment for movie and television development. Today they are announcing a five picture deal with Sony Pictures that will bring the Valiant Universe to the big screen.

Bloodshot and Harbinger will each get two movies before the fifth movie, Harbinger Wars, brings the characters together. Harbinger Wars will be inspired by the Valiant’s 2013 miniseries of the same name where Bloodshot, a nanite-enchanced soldier, clashes with Harbinger and his gang of super-powered (think X-Men) runaways.

Bloodshot will be directed by John Wick’s David Leitch and Chad Stahelski while director considerations for Harbinger are being kept under wraps for now. All five movies will be produced by Valiant’s Dinesh Shamdasani, along with Original Film’s Neal H. Moritz and Toby Jaffe (The Fast and Furious franchise, 21 Jump Street).

Other Valiant properties in development include the action comedy Archer & Armstrong and the supernatural thriller Shadowman.

Bloodshot is set to hit theatres in 2017. Are you excited for more comic book movie crossovers? Let us know in the comments below!

Growing up my best friend and I use to play Iron Man and X-O Manowar in Heavy Metal on the Sega Saturn. I’ll be honest, I had no idea who this X-O Manowar guy was. I always wanted to play as Iron Man. Not that it mattered much, we would always become frustrated and never get farther than the first few levels. That was my first little taste of the Valiant Universe. Lemire (Green Arrow, Animal Man), Kindt (RAI, UNITY, Mind MGMT), and Rivera’s (Daredevil) The Valiant is my second. It was much more enjoyable.

The four part mini series is self contained so readers can pick it up and not be intimidated by continuity. I can think of no better marketing tool than this series to grow Valiant’s readership. It’s that good.

The premise is pretty straightforward. Since basically the beginning of time the Eternal Warrior has protected the Geomancers who are mystics that speak for the Earth. No matter how hard the Eternal Warrior tries the Immortal Enemy defeats him and kills the Geomancer plunging humanity into a dark age. The cycle continues a few times throughout the ages but this time the Eternal Warrior will have help from the Valiant super heroes.

Jeff Lemire and Matt Kindt’s writing is solid for most of the series. It’s paced great so you’ll definitely want to have all four issues on hand when you begin reading this one. The duo really shines during the moments that the two contrasting characters Kay (the geomancer) and Bloodshot (nanite-infused super soldier) are together. This is where you’ll find some of the series’ best moments. The only problem I had was the use of time travel in the beginning of the fourth issue brought the action and emotional climax to an abrupt halt. What came next more than made up for that though.

The end of this series will drastically shift the face of The Valiant universe. Like I said, I have no prior knowledge of it but even to me the events felt significant. This surely has something to do with how well each character is established in the beginning of the series. Each hero getting their own little defining moments and story lines. By the time the final issue rolled around I was connected to each of them.

The strongest part of this mini series is the handling of the villain; the Immortal Enemy. This may be one of the most sadistic and maniacal villains I’ve ever seen. As his name suggests, he is immortal. He shifts his appearance into what his opponent fears most; for our Geomancer it is the tuxedo and top hat wearing Mister Flay from a story her father use to read her, The Littlest Princess and the Twilight Kingdom. Perhaps the scariest imagery is when his face splits opens revealing the face of a demon-like creature inside. Paolo Rivera’s drawings create a villain that is sure to haunt you long after you finish the series.

(Please don’t invade my dreams.)

Rivera does a great job with the art in the rest of the book as well. There are many instances where he is able to perfectly capture the emotion of a character with little to no words from Lemire and Kindt. From peaceful communities on the riverside, to giant action pieces Rivera masterfully handles it all. There is no other way to put it; this series is gorgeous.

This miniseries is great and definitely worth checking out. I won’t be surprised to see it on a few best of lists at the end of the year. Whether you’re looking to dive into the Valiant Universe for the first time or just for a great miniseries that you can read in an hour or two I’d highly recommend checking out The Valiant. The fourth and final issue hit shelves yesterday!

People say they’re sick of superhero movies. Let them die of the fever, because Valiant Comics is stepping up against Marvel and DC.

Vulture is reporting that indie comics publisher Valiant Entertainment have “secured an eight-figure investment” from China-based DMG Entertainment to launch feature film and television projects based on Valiant properties. They seek to capitalize on the somewhat underestimated Chinese market and release their projects simultaneously in the United States, China and abroad.

From Vulture:

“Audiences in China and the rest of the world are hungry for heroic stories that they can more easily relate to … and with the international box office accounting for the biggest piece of the total gross, the time is right for a truly international superhero franchise,” said DMG President Wu Bing in a press release. “DMG will bring its unique global perspective to the task of transforming the Valiant Universe into the first international comic-movie universe.”

There is a much larger discussion at play here, and that’s the foreign market beginning to influence Hollywood. It started when Iron Man 3 featured exclusive scenes for the Chinese release and Pacific Rim becoming a legitimate franchise when overseas tickets catapulted it from an otherwise lukewarm response domestically.

Just this morning I wrote about superheroes of color, and Valiant — who are from the get-go seeking an international audience — has a chance to build its characters for the 21st century audience. They’re a relatively young company, celebrating just their 25th anniversary this May. They may not have the legacy and cultural influence as Marvel or DC, but I imagine their youth and the lack of wider awareness by the public means they have more freedom to make their characters as interesting and diverse as possible.

I hope for all success in the industry, and this news makes me excited. I’m not a huge reader of their titles, but I will always root for new properties more than I do rebooting Batman all over again.

With the film currently stalled at Paramount, Valiant Entertainment Group has chosen to move forward themselves with a film adaptation of Harbinger. The company has brought back Stephen Susco (Texas Chainsaw 3D) to pen the script for the film. This part is great news. The only bad news is that the potential director attached is Brett Ratner, but keep in mind that potential director doesn’t necessarily mean that he actually will be directing the film. If he does get brought on to direct, could Ratner redeem himself here for X-Men: The Last Stand?

harbinger_0_3

The film originally in development over at Paramount, but underlying rights issues in the whole Fox and Warner Bros. lawsuit over Watchmen has stalled the project. Well, instead of going the the studio route, Valiant has “chosen to seek financing and was given a capital infusion from private investment company Cuneo & Co. and partnered with former Marvel CEO and vice chairman Peter Cuneo to relaunch and independently develop their own library of over 1,500 titles.”

The series, which was created by Jim Shooter, is a dark and modern twist on the mutant/superhero mythology and follows Pete Stanchek, a teenager- turned-superhero and his battle with a equally powerful industrialist. If you’ve never read an issue of Harbinger, do yourself a favor and check the series out. You won’t be disappointed.

It’s the time to recap the week’s news and events with The Week In Comics! There wasn’t a lot of news this week in regards to comics but there was some pretty big news to report.

Jame Tynion IV Taking Over Writing Duties On Red Hood & The Outlaws

Red Hood And The Outlaws has been one of the New 52’s best titles so far and it looks like it’s getting even better. James Tynion IV (Talon) will be taking over writing duties after Lobdell finishes up his final story arc. [via Bleeding Cool]

Eddie Brock To Become The New “Toxin”

It’s been revealed that Eddie Brock will be returning to the Marvel Universe. But Brock won’t be coming back as Venom nor will he return as Anti-Venom. No, Brock will be returning as a new incarnation of Toxin, and will definitely be coming head to head with The Superior Spider-Man in the future. Cullen Bunn on Eddie Brock as the new Toxin: [via Newsarama]

You’ll start getting glimpses of him before issue #31, but in #31, Toxin returns. There are a lot of people who say, “Eddie Brock should be the only Venom. He’s the only person worthy of being Venom.” My goal, as lofty as it may be, is, I really want people to forget about Eddie as Venom. What [artist] Declan [Shalvey] and I are trying to do is, once we tell this story, I want people to associate Eddie Brock with Toxin.

It’s a lofty goal, because he has such a big history with Venom, but a lot of people really liked when he was Anti-Venom. We want to make Toxin a viable, interesting, dynamic character on his own — the Eddie/Toxin combo, or “Broxin” as I’ve seen him referred. [Laughs.] Our goal is to really make people love and hate and fear Toxin, and Eddie Brock.

When Eddie and Toxin were bonded in “Savage Six,” he was almost like this mindless killing machine. That is not the Toxin you are going to see. I don’t want to say he’s solidly a villain, but for Venom, at least, he is solidly an antagonist. The one thing that Eddie and Toxin have in common is that they both hate Venom — both the symbiote and the man. That solidifies their partnership to some degree.

New Mystery Series Coming From From Brian Wood And Oliver Coipel

This image was tweeted earlier by writer Brian Wood. The future of Marvel is XX? Coming this April is a new series from Brian Wood and Oliver Coipel. One would assume by the X’s that it’s a new X-title. But, we’ve been wrong before. Then again…does the DNA kind of give it away? An official announcement regarding the title will be made some time in the next month.

Phil Noto Taking Over Art Duties On Thunderbolts

Not a fan of the art on the new Thunderbolts title? Well, don’t worry because starting in March the title will see a new artist. Phil Noto (Uncanny X-Force) will be taking over with issue #7 this March. Will he be bring new life to the title or just Frank Castle’s sex life? [via IGN]

This weeks trade spotlight: ZOMBIES CHRISTMAS CAROL

Collecting ZOMBIES CHRISTMAS CAROL #1-5.

Hey, it’s time to get in the holiday spirit…right?

Well, this is unexpected. Deadline reports that Valiant Entertainment and producer Sean Daniel (The Mummy) have teamed up to bring Shadowman to the big screen. J. Michael Straczynski, who probably needs no introduction, has signed on to write the script for the film. The logline for the film, according to the site, is as follows:

“The forces of darkness are determined to claim New Orleans as their own, and Jack Boniface must accept the legacy he was born to uphold, in order to stop them. As Shadowman, Jack is about to become the only thing that stands between his city and an army of unspeakable monstrosities from beyond the night. He must pay a high price and master his new abilities before Master Darque brings down the wall between reality and the eldritch darkness of the Deadside.”

Straczynski stated:

“Shadowman is a character who lives in a unique world that mixes the modern world with that which is most ancient within us. The New Orleans vibe and history, and the struggle to find a balance with the personality within him, is a perfect dramatic vehicle. We’ve already finished the outline and there’s a lot of action, much of it unique to what Shadowman can do…but at the core of it, there’s a strong character, world and mythology that can be explored across multiple subsequent films. This is gonna be fun.”

Valiant has a new Shadowman series hitting stands next month from the creative team of Patrick Zircher and Justin Jordan. Of all of their characters this is definitely that last one expected but could turn out to be the most interesting. As usual, sound off with your thoughts in the box below.
