Briefly: Konami debuted the first footage from their next iteration of the venerable Metal Gear Online at Friday’s VGA’s, and the company has now confirmed that MGO will debut as a piece of the Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain retail package.

Yep, basically a whole ‘nother game included in what’s already set to be a lengthy package. In the “third iteration of the popular multiplayer game, newly redesigned with the familiar gameplay and aesthetic styling of its companion single-player campaign Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. With a focus on Tactical Team Operations, the game features a ‘class system’ that more uniquely defines the strengths and abilities of player characters on the battle field. Key characters from the series including Venom Snake and Ocelot will also make appearances in the anticipated multiplayer feature.

Colour us excited. I actually missed out on Metal Gear Online last time around, and after hearing all of the praise for the last version, I really can’t wait to get my hands on this one. Take a look at the gameplay trailer below (don’t miss that ending) and be sure to let us know what you think!

Briefly: Details on this one are yet to be revealed, but LegionofLeia learned today that the man himself, Stan Lee will be making a cameo appearance on Marvel’s Agent Carter sometime next year.

Stan has of course appeared on Marvel’s other ABC series, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and we’re pretty excited to see where he’ll pop up here.

We’ll be sure to keep you informed as we learn more about the cameo! You can watch (or rewatch) the Agent Carter sneak peek below, and be sure to let us know if you’re excited for the series!

ABC presents its second action packed series from the creative minds at Marvel in “Marvel’s Agent Carter,” inspired by the feature films Marvel’s “Captain America: The First Avenger” and Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” along with the short “Marvel One-Shot: Agent Carter.”

Years before Agent Coulson and his S.H.I.E.L.D. team swore to protect those who cannot protect themselves from threats they cannot conceive, there was Agent Peggy Carter (Hayley Atwell, Marvel’s “Captain America: The First Avenger,” Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”), who pledged the same oath but lived in a different time when women weren’t recognized as being as smart or as tough as their male counterparts.

But no one should ever underestimate Peggy.

It’s 1946 and peace has dealt Peggy a serious blow as she finds herself marginalized when the men return home from fighting abroad. Working for the covert SSR (Strategic Scientific Reserve), Peggy finds herself stuck doing administrative work when she would rather be back out in the field; putting her vast skills into play and taking down the bad guys. But she is also trying to navigate life as a single woman in America, in the wake of losing the love of her life, Steve Rogers – aka Captain America.

When old acquaintance Howard Stark (Dominic Cooper, Marvel’s “Captain America: The First Avenger”) finds himself being framed for unleashing his deadliest weapons to anyone willing to pony up the cash, he contacts Peggy – the only person he can trust – to track down those responsible, dispose of the weapons and clear his name. He empowers his butler, Edwin Jarvis (James D’Arcy, “Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World”), to be at her beck and call when needed to help assist her as she investigates and tracks down those responsible for releasing these weapons of mass destruction. But Jarvis, who is a creature of habit and sticks to a rigid daily routine, is going to have to make some major life changes if he’s going to be able to keep up with Peggy.

If caught going on these secret missions for Stark, Peggy could be targeted as a traitor and spend the rest of her days in prison – or worse. And as she delves deeper into her investigation, she may find that those she works for are not who they seem, and she might even begin to question whether Stark is as innocent as he claims.

“Marvel’s Agent Carter” stars Hayley Atwell as Agent Peggy Carter, James D’Arcy as Edwin Jarvis, Chad Michael Murray (“One Tree Hill,” “A Cinderella Story”) as Agent Jack Thompson, Enver Gjokaj (“Dollhouse”) as Agent Daniel Sousa and Shea Whigham (“American Hustle,” “The Wolf of Wall Street”) as Chief Roger Dooley.

Tara Butters (“Resurrection”), Michele Fazekas (“Resurrection), Christopher Markus (Marvel’s “Captain America: The First Avenger,” Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”), Stephen McFeely (Marvel’s “Captain America: The First Avenger,” Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”), Chris Dingess (“Men in Trees”), Kevin Feige (Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy,” “Marvel’s The Avengers”), Louis D’Esposito (Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy,” Marvel’s “Iron Man 3”), Alan Fine (Marvel’s “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” Marvel’s “Thor”), Joe Quesada (“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” “Marvel’s Avengers Assemble”), Stan Lee (“Spider-Man,” “Iron Man,” “The Incredible Hulk”) and Jeph Loeb (“Smallville,” “Lost,” “Heroes”) are executive producers. “Marvel’s Agent Carter” is produced by ABC Studios and Marvel Television.

Briefly: Looks like The CW has another 90’s throwback planned for The Flash, and another original series cast member will reprise his villainous role.

It’s Mark Hamill, and he’s playing The Trickster. The CW lists the character’s bio as:

“Mark Hamill returns in a brand new interpretation of James Jesse (aka The Trickster), a role he originated on the 90’s ‘Flash’ series.  In this new iteration, The Trickster is an anarchist terrorist  con man serving a life sentence in Iron Heights who helps Barry (Grant Gustin) and Det. West (Jesse L. Martin) to foil the city-wide attacks of a wannabe Trickster eagerly following in the original’s deadly footsteps.   The episode will reunite him with John Wesley Shipp who went up against him as the original ‘Flash’ on the CBS version.”

The CW has been doing a pretty stellar job with The Flash so far, and it’s especially cool to see all the nods and recastings that they’ve been doing in homage to the original series.

Series’ executive producer Andrew Kreisberg notes that “Having Mark reprise his role as The Trickster was on our original wish list when we were planning our version of The Flash.  Christmas and Chanukah came early for us this year when he said yes!  We are beyond humbled and excited to have him joining us for another round of deadly trickery!”

Are you down for the role? Excited to see what sort of shape Hamill’s gotten himself into for his role in Star Wars: Episode VII? Sound out below!

I still recall playing Super Mario 3D World for the very first time (now just over a year ago): most of its campaign saw myself and three pals killing each other frequently while consistently replaying each and every level to ensure that we maximized our quantity of stars. Early on in the game, something magical happened, and we were introduced to a new type of Mario mini-game that would go on to steal all of our hearts: Captain Toad.

Or rather, I was introduced to Captain Toad, as I instantly fell in love with this chill, relaxed exploration level, and then proceeded to hog the original stage in each and every world that followed. If I had to use the gamepad (which was not overly well utilized in 3D World and not nearly as comfortable and long lasting as the pro controller), the Captain Toad levels were my reward, and the tradeoff was more than worth it.

I remember having the conversation every time a Captain Toad level came up that “this dude’s a total bad-ass, and he needs his own game.” Apparently Nintendo was listening, because Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is here, and he’s even more of a bad-ass than before. We received just a few charming, thought-provoking Toad levels in Super Mario 3D World, but for this release, Nintendo’s upped the level count to 70+, and included some very clever (not just “let’s jump on Bowser’s head”) boss battles and some oh-crap-I-need-more-of-these minecart stages (but more on those later).

Toad1

The standard levels in Treasure Tracker are a lot like the ones that we fell in love with in Super Mario 3D World. Captain Toad doesn’t have a lot of skills; the guy can’t jump at all, and his top speed is laughable at best. Basically, you’ll be traversing each stage in an attempt to find three gems (some obvious, and some well hidden), while avoiding all sorts of baddies (or throwing turnips at them, a new skill for the Captain), before making your way to the star at the end of the level. The competent and varied level design should keep you coming back for more, as in many stages you’re unlikely (unless you’re taking your time of course) to find all three gems the first time through, and each level also features a much tougher secondary objective that won’t even be revealed until you’ve completed the stage once before. Controls are simple, as you’re basically moving and grabbing things, and you’ll have full control of the game’s camera either by using the right analog stick or fighting with the terrible gyroscopic camera controls (they are never, ever, ever faster or more convenient). Many stages will also use the gamepad in neat ways (as we saw in SM3DW), such as using your fingers to raise platforms or stun enemies, or even blowing into the microphone in order to power fans in-game.

Boss battles definitely take further thought, as again, the Captain isn’t very good at most things. Instead of having the best Mario player running up to the boss/sub-boss and killing him before you’ve had time to pick up your controller, they require precise timing and an understanding of how each boss stage works. Oh, and don’t forget that you’ll still be collecting three gems from these levels. There are various other mini-games and sub-stages to keep things fresh, but the standouts here have to be the minecart stages. In these levels, Toad hops into a minecart, the game switches to a first-person mode (though you can switch back to third-person if you like), and becomes a sort of on-rails shooter that has you throwing turnips (using the gyroscopic controls which actually work very well here) at enemies, power blocks, coins, and gems in an attempt to get through the course unscathed, and… well, rich of course. These levels are an absolute pleasure to play, and I almost always went through them multiple times. These stages reminded me a lot of Pokémon Snap, which is definitely, definitely due for a remake on the Wii U (as we’ve mentioned on the Geekscape Games podcast… insert shameless plug here), but as this is likely the closest we’ll get for some time (forever), we’ll take what we can get.

Toad2

I think that my favourite part of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker is just how damned relaxing the game can be. It feels so different from every insanely fast-paced game that releases today (like say Nintendo’s very own Smash Bros. for Wii U which launched a few weeks back, for instance). You can take the game at your own speed, at whatever depth you want to experience at, whether you’re a little kid who just wants to clear each level or a full-grown human who needs to 100% the thing. It’s also super accessible, and I could definitely see myself showing it to some of my non-gaming friends or relatives as there’s a good chance that they could enjoy it. The game also led to some far deeper thoughts than I’d ever imagined a title like Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker could: at the start many stages, I’d think “Wow, Mario could complete this in one jump, but it’s so hard for Toad.” And then I thought for a long time about how that is literally life for some people. Yep. Captain Toad is powerful.

It’s not the longest of games (you’re probably looking at about 6-9 hours to completion depending on how bad you are at puzzle games, but Nintendo’s also not asking full price for this one. Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker costs a cool $39.99, and it’s more than worth every penny.

I was expecting exactly what we saw from Super Mario 3D World‘s bonus levels, but instead we received something much more realized than that. Nintendo has crafted a cute, quirky, and clever spinoff that has quickly become one of my favourite puzzlers in recent memory. With a more-than-reasonable amount of challenging and fair content, cute-as-hell graphics and sounds, and a budget price tag, this adventure is more than worthy of the price of admission.

Plus, it transformed Toad from a cute and cuddly sidekick, to a bonafide bad-ass.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker scores an admirable 4/5.

Briefly: Hankering for that HD rerelease of the original remake of Resident Evil (well that’s confusing)? Looks like you won’t be waiting too much longer, as Capcom has announced that the game will release for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC on January 20th.

As Andy noted in the original announcement, “the Xbox One and PS4 will benefit the most from this HD version of Resident Evil with things like 1080p resolution and fully remastered sound to support 5.1 surround sound. There will also be options to change the aspect ratio between 4:3 and 16:9. Not sure I would want to go back to the dark days of 4:3 though having that option will please someone out there. If you hated the tank controls of Resident Evil, you’re in luck. There will be an alternative control scheme for those of us who never want to go back to those frustrating controls ever again.”

Take a look at the new trailer below, and be sure to let us know if you’re going to pick this one up! I (somehow) missed out on both Resident Evil and the GameCube remake… so I’m pretty damned excited to experience just how the franchise began.

Briefly: My time with Bungie’s Destiny has come and gone, but based on the just-released launch trailer for next week’s expansion, The Dark Below, I could definitely see myself headed back to the moon for a few more (dozen) hours.

Bungie has been extremely active in patching, evolving, and fixing the myriad of issues that frequent players had been having, and from what I’ve heard (again, it’s been awhile since I’ve played) the game has come a long way. The game’s first expansion, The Dark Below will add new weapons, armor, and gear, as well as an increased light level cap. Of course, it’ll also feature new story missions, three new PvP Crucible arenas, and new co-op challenges, including a new Strike and brand-new six-player Raid.

Sounds like a good chunk of content, doesn’t it? The expansion will launch on December 9th for a cool $20. Check out the trailer below, and let us know if you’ll be picking this one up!

Briefly: Already feeling mixed thoughts about next year’s Terminator: Genisys? A new batch of images for the film, along with a tiny teaser for a trailer set to release tomorrow, have been released online… and they may not sway you in the positive direction.

Sure, the images look very promo-y, and certainly don’t appear to be stills from the finished product, but to my untrained eye, they look super cheesy, which I’m not overly looking for in an anticipated Terminator film.

The teaser definitely looks better than any of these promo images, but it’s also really hard to judge something from 15 seconds of choice footage (not that we should really be judging the film at this point anyways).

In any case, take a look at everything below, and be sure to let us know if you’re looking forward to the film! Don’t forget to check back tomorrow for Terminator: Genisys‘ full trailer!

Briefly: Netflix has finally announced the long-awaited premiere date of the next season of House of Cards. The company will release its series’ third season on February 27th, 2015, and that day cannot freaking come soon enough.

A very, very short teaser accompanied the announcement, so take a look below, and let us know if you’re excited for the Underwood’s return!

Briefly: We’re now just two months away from the highly anticipated premiere of Vince Gilligan’s Breaking Bad follow-up prequel/sequel, Better Call Saul, and AMC has just debuted both a new teaser for the series, as well as its first clip.

The teaser is fairly simple, and shows Saul shredding a lot of important/illegal documents, while the excellent clip features Saul meeting fan favourite Mike. he series is set six years before Saul Goodman (Odenkirk) meets Walter White.  When we meet him, the man who will become Saul Goodman is known as Jimmy McGill, a small-time lawyer searching for his destiny, and, more immediately, hustling to make ends meet.  Working alongside, and, often, against Jimmy, is “fixer” Mike Erhmantraut (Banks), a beloved character introduced in Breaking Bad.  The series will track Jimmy’s transformation into Saul Goodman, the man who puts “criminal” in “criminal lawyer.”  The series’ tone is dramatic, woven through with dark humor.

Take a look at both videos below, and be sure to let us know if you’re looking forward to the February 8th premiere!

We love Video Games Live. In fact, we were just talking about the VGL and its incredible co-creator Tommy Tallarico on the latest episode of Geekscape Games!

I was lucky enough to experience a Video Games Live performance back in April of 2011, and since then I’ve been eagerly awaiting for VGL to return  somewhere near me, as it to this day remains one of the most mind-blowing musical experiences that I’ve ever been a part of, and I would really, really, really love to experience it again (and I missed it at SDCC… bah).

My iTunes library is filled with frequently-on-repeat Video Games Live content, and as such I’m beyond excited for the currently-in-crowdfunding Level 4 album to finally be released.

The Kickstarter is already over its funding goal with just three days left to contribute, but Tommy and co. have set up some stretch goals to bring us even more content, and if it can get enough funds, another full length concert video (who wouldn’t want that?). Video Games Live: Level 4 is set to be a studio recorded album, and being able to relive another concert would just be icing on the cake. Check out the Kickstarter video for the campaign below, and keep reading to learn how you could win an AMAZING VGL price pack.

Briefly: The latest episode of Machinima’s bad-ass Super Power Beat Down is here, and it makes for what must be the coolest matchup yet: Batman vs. Darth Vader.

Instantly, you’d think that Batman wouldn’t have a chance against the power of the Force, but he definitely has some tricks up his sleeve, doesn’t he? As Machinima notes, “This will be Batman’s third appearance and Darth Vadar’s second appearance in the beloved live-action series that pits two super powered legends in a winner-take-all battle – with the victor determined by more than a 1/4 million fans who cast their votes on the SPBD home page. The Caped Crusader is currently 1-1 on SPBD, with a decisive victory over Deadpool and a crushing defeat at the hands of Wolverine. Vader, meanwhile won his only death match as he took down Gandalf in 2012.”

The show averages an impressive 1.8 million views per episode, which is definitely a testament to how freaking cool it is.

You can take a look at the latest episode below, and be sure to let us know who you think should win!

Seeing Doug Jones as Count Orlock is a pretty amazing thing. Imagine a feature film worth of this:

DougJoneOrlock

Doug Jones, along with director David Lee Fisher and a crew of exceptional talent (including Academy Award Nominated special effects artist Mike Elizalde) want to bring the horror classic Nosferatu back to life in an extremely interesting way.

They’re calling it Nosferatu – The Feature Film Remix, and are using technology they developed on previous projects to add and adapt original footage with new props and actors. The project’s Kickstarter video shows off some of this technology in motion, and it actually looks pretty unbelievable. As described, they call the technology a “visual remix.”  Nosferatu’s production will use this same revolutionary process, but to a much higher degree of quality due to great advances in software, cameras and computer power; allowing us higher cinematic quality and far more dynamic sets and locations.”

a7867501e53e3c059229bc3685a3a733_large

If you’re unfamiliar with Nosferatu, here’s how they describe it:

The original, Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horrorwas the first vampire tale ever filmed, and is widely considered the cornerstone of horror cinema. Shot in 1921 and directed by F.W.Murnau, the film was an unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Upon its release, Stoker’s widow ordered all copies of the film burned. Fortunately a single print survived.

The history of the film is pretty amazing on its own, but Fisher, Jones, and crew re-adapting the film for a new audience could keep the legend alive for years and years to come.

Of course, to make this dream a reality (and to give Doug Jones what sounds like his dream role), this project needs our help. Nosferatu – The Feature Film Remix is sitting at just $34, 421 of its $60, 000 goal… with just eight days left to go. It’s a project that looks beyond deserving of our funds, and it’s one that really needs every dollar possible at this point to get there.

Of course, there are a ton of great rewards in store for backing Nosferatu. There’s the standards; DVD’s, digital copies, Blu Rays, etc. But there are also some extremely unique rewards available if one wants them badly enough; sculptures of Orlock in various sizes, Skype conversations with freaking Doug Jones himself, studio tours of Spectral Motion sound… this stuff all sounds incredible.

In any case, take a lookout the project’s Kickstarter video below, and head here to back! If you can’t back, share with your friends, as this is a project that we would all love to see happen.

Briefly: According to THR, the highly-anticipated and long-overdue Wonder Woman has finally found a director, and it’s Breaking Bad director and executive producer Michelle MacLaren. Man of Steel and Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice director Zack Snyder is of course on board to executive produce the film.

MacLaren has also directed episodes of The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones, and was apparently the top contender after an extended search for a female director on the project.

Further details on the film are still scarce, but we’ll be sure to fill you in as we learn more! Wonder Woman hits theatres in 2017!

Briefly: Well this is a kick-ass trailer, and as disappointed as we were when Batman: Arkham Knight was pushed far into 2015, we’re more than happy with the way it looks to be turning out.

Today’s trailer is called the “Ace Chemicals Infiltration Trailer: Part 1”, and shows Bats saving workers from an infiltrated chemical plant. We also see some amazingly bad-ass usage of the Batmobile, as well as… You know what, just watch the trailer, but only if you feel like immediately pre-ordering the title.

Take a look at the video below, and let us know what you think! Batman: Arkham Knight hits PS4 and Xbox One on June 2nd, 2015!

Briefly: If you’ve listened to the last episode of Geekscape Games, or have been following Geekscape in any capacity as of late, you’ll know just how damned excited we are for Telltale’s Game of Thrones (or… anything by Telltale Games).

Following the first trailer from last week, the company has revealed just when you’ll be able to get your hands on the game’s first episode. The official Steam listing for the game states that Season One will start in December, and a Telltale spokesperson noted that “We’re anticipating an early December premiere for the first episode of Game of Thrones: A Telltale Games Series. Standby @telltalegames on twitter for an announcement expected very soon.”

According to Steam, the game’s PC/Mac System Requirements are as follows:

Windows:

OS: Windows XP Service Pack 3
Processor: Core 2 Duo 2GHz or equivalent
Memory: 3 GB RAM
Graphics: ATI or NVIDIA card w/512 MB RAM

Briefly: We’re generally not fans of the whole trailer-for-a-trailer phenomenon that seems to be so hot right now, but we’ll take anything that we can get from the don’t-call-it-a-reboot Jurassic World.

Today it was revealed that the full trailer will hit the web next Thursday (that’s a great Thanksgiving gift for all you ‘Muricans), and along with that reveal, Universal has debuted a short teaser featuring the first footage from the anticipated film.

The footage is very, very brief, simply telling us that ‘The park is open’ before showing us some of the film’s beautiful stars (especially Chris Pratt) and some gorgeous dinos.

For now, we’ll have to settle for this short snippet, but be sure to check back on Thursday for the full Jurassic World trailer!

Briefly: We’re now just a couple of weeks away from the anticipated Arrow The Flash crossover event, and The CW today debuted a new batch of images from the upcoming episode.

A synopsis has also been revealed, giving us a much better idea of what we can expect from the first half of the event:

Barry (Grant Gustin) is thrilled when Oliver (guest star Stephen Amell), Felicity (guest star Emily Bett Rickards) and Diggle (guest star David Ramsey) come to Central City to investigate a case involving a deadly boomerang. Excited about teaming up with his friend, Barry asks Oliver if he’d like to help him stop Ray Bivolo, the meta-human Barry is currently tracking. Bivolo causes people to lose control of their emotions and has been using that skill to rob banks. Unfortunately, the superhero partnership doesn’t go as smoothly as Barry expected. When Oliver tells Barry he still has a lot to learn, Barry sets out to prove him wrong by attempting to stop Bivolo alone. However, when Bivolo infects Barry and sets him on a rage rampage, everyone is in danger, and the only one who can stop him is the Arrow. Meanwhile, Iris (Candice Patton) is furious when Eddie (Rick Cosnett) tries to get a task force to stop The Flash, Joe and Dr. Wells (Tom Cavanagh) agree the Arrow is a bad influence on Barry, and Caitlin and Cisco deal with a new team in S.T.A.R. Labs.

It certainly sounds like an action-packed episode, and I really can’t wait to see it. For now, we’ll have to settle on these images while we count down the days. Take a look at everything below, and let us know what you think of Arrow so far!

Briefly: Following the news that the Shulk Amiibo would be exclusive to GameStop, a corporate note from Best Buy (which appears to have been taken down) has revealed a second Amiibo that you won’t find anywhere else: Meta Knight.

It’s unknown just how long these figures are set to remain exclusive (or available for that matter), but as both the Meta Knight and Shulk Amiibos are set to launch in the third wave of figures this February, you’ll probably want to get your hands on them fairly quickly.

The first wave of Amiibos is set to launch alongside Super Smash Bros. for Wii U this Friday. How many are you planning to pick up?

MetaKnight

Note: At time of publishing, the online functionality of Super Smash Bros. had not yet been activated. Impressions are based on single player and local multiplayer onlyI also did not have an opportunity to test out the Amiibo functionality, so I haven’t touched on that in the following body.

Remember when gamers everywhere were whining and groaning that the Wii U didn’t have any games?

Oh, they’re still saying that?

Have they seen the console’s library of freaking exclusives?

Well, Nintendo is about to add another universally-acclaimed title to their roster, and if trends continue, maybe opinionated gamers won’t deem the Wii U such a failure for much longer (well, they probably still will for some reason, but I still love the thing).

Enter Super Smash Bros. for Wii U.

Now, we’ve all been playing Nintendo’s stellar mobile edition of Super Smash Bros. for nearly two months. Many of us have been through blisters, weeks of strained eyes, broken circle pads, or far worse, so I was beyond looking forward to giving my hands (and my overused 3DS) a much needed break. I grabbed my Pro Controller (which never, ever needs charging apparently), popped in the disc, and instantly witnessed near perfection.

The 3DS edition is almost perfect as it is (aside from a few sub-par modes), but the fact that I could play a match and not want to re-enact the end of Saw on my hands (it would be a less painful alternative, clearly) solidified the Wii U version’s greatness. The beyond-cramped screen and where-did-I-go characters are gone, and seeing our favourite fighters and the beautifully designed stages on a bigger screen and in full HD is an absolute treat. It’s totally silly, but I often find myself pausing (single-player of course) matches at choice moments, panning and zooming the camera, and simply basking in just how freaking beautiful everything looks (and it looks even better in glorious 60FPS motion). Right from the menus, to the backgrounds, to the arenas themselves (a huge 46 stages) to the characters (of which there are 51) and trophies, it would be impossible not to call Super Smash Bros. strikingly gorgeous.

Aside from the (again, stellar) presentation, this edition of Super Smash Bros. adds to the already expansive list of features contained in the 3DS release. Nintendo actually detailed 50 interesting facts about the Wii U version a few weeks back (if you’ve got half an hour, check that out below), but by far the biggest addition to the title is the insanely fun and insanely frustrating 8-player Smash. If you’ve ever thought that four-player Smash Bros. was sometimes too hectic, you will not have a second to even breathe when you double the participants. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a total blast, but in playing this mode with seven lucky friends, we experienced countless “where am I” and “what the heck happened” moments. And then there’s the damned ‘Great Cave Offensive’ arena, where the frustration grows exponentially whenever a fighter leaves the pack (the stage is HUGE). Still, playing with up to eight players means that none of your real-life friends ever have to sit out (nobody has more than seven friends, right?), and the mode is so damned hectic (especially with items on) that someone who has never or rarely played Smash Bros. still has an opportunity for victory, even against a seasoned veteran (I witnessed this many, many times). Of course, to be able to experience 8-player Smash, you need a lot of controllers, which segways me right into one of the coolest aspects of the title (and most first-party releases in general): the controller options.

Nintendo has released a lot of controllers in the 13 years since the GameCube came out. You’ve got the classic GCN controller, the sought-after WaveBird, Wii Remotes, Wii Motion + Remotes, Nunchuks, Classic Controllers, Pro Classic Controllers, Wii U Gamepads, Wii U Pro Controllers, and I’m probably missing a few in that list too. It’s pretty incredible to note that (with an optional adapter to go back to the GCN days) that all of these controllers and attachments are compatible with Super Smash Bros. This means that if you or any of your friends own a Nintendo controller from the last 13 years, you’re set. That’s amazing, and between a group (especially of eight people) it should not be hard to get an entirely full game going. You can even force one of your friends to use a 3DS as a controller if you really, really hate them. My only wish for the GameCube support and optional adapter is that the extend it into other titles down the road. I get that it’s the preferred method of input for competitive Smash play, but what if any game that could feature the Pro or Classic controllers could also utilize the GCN pad?

I think that the thing that I love most about Super Smash Bros. is that I can be completely terrible at it and still have a smashing good time (it was as hard to type that pun as it must be to read it). I’d consider myself a Smash Bros. beginner (aside from this title, I’ve put less than 8 hours into the franchise), and yet, even while playing against friends who have put an uncountable amount of time into the series, and who describe ‘advance techs’ and other mechanics that I can’t even begin to understand, I still have fun. These people absolutely destroy me, each and every match we play, and yet I’m never at a point where I’ve had enough. It’s an incredibly balanced title (or so it seems to this n00b), and each time I’m knocked out, I feel it completely justified. I can see the wrong direction or button that I pushed, I can see the counter my opponent had ready, I can see that my timing was off. It’s alway frustrating to be blown off the map, but it’s also always fair, which is something that I feel a lot of games miss out on these days.

Pac-Man and Mega Man have joined the fight, and they're both pretty awesome.
Pac-Man and Mega Man have joined the fight, and they’re both pretty awesome.

Smash is also an extremely simple title to grasp the basics of. Simply watching the game’s short tutorial video is enough to get you off the ground (pushing or flicking the analog stick in different directions will all lead to different attacks, etc.), and it’s such an easy to understand title that I can imagine a few young children who would very quickly be able to surpass my ability. On the flipside, the game can be as complicated as you want it to be, and if you plan on playing competitively, prepare for it to get really complicated, really fast. The fact that I can hand a controller to a 100% non-gamer and within a few minutes see them smiling and throwing punches is a pretty powerful thing. In fact, at the end of a long night of local multiplayer, instead of hearing a “well let’s never do that again” I was instead asked “so when are we playing again.” It’s pretty amazing that a single game can do this, and especially a fighting game, which I always found to be the most frustrating and non newbie friendly genre of them all.

Multiplayer is obviously key in a game of this genre, but that doesn’t mean that there’s not a lot to love when you’re playing by yourself. The always fun Classic Mode, where you fight a ton of dudes and then fight a really hard dude (and you can totally scale the difficulty to earn more gold) is still present, as is the timeline-spanning All-Star Mode. Smash Tour is a boardgame-style mode that has you collecting fighters and power-ups (starting a battle with an item in-hand for instance) that starts out convoluted but ends up being pretty fun whether you’re alone or with friends, while the extremely-welcome Events have you completing super-specific and sometimes super-challenging tasks. I’ve nearly thrown my controller more than a few times playing that mode, so maybe you should use a wrist-strap for that one (you should definitely use a wrist-strap for that one). As always, there are tons and tons of collectibles to get your hands on, which should leave completionists beyond busy for quite some time.

Another issue that Nintendo has solved in this iteration is that fact that younger players may not have the slightest idea where some of these characters are from. To help (and to again help with those nostalgic feelings for us older players), Nintendo has built in three-minute demos of a lot of their classic titles. It’ll probably make them a ton of money too, seeing as all of these titles are available on the Wii U eShop (and have handy buy links after the demo times out). It was a very cool experience to be able to jump into the SNES F-Zero when a friend asked “What the heck is Captain Falcon from?”… and then immediately jump back out because that game is impossible.

Masterpieces mode gives you timed-demos of old classics.
Masterpieces mode gives you timed-demos of old classics.

It’s hard to put my finger on what really does it for me here; whether it’s the insane roster of classic and recognizable characters (and Shulk), or that warm nostalgic feeling I get from each and every stage, or maybe it’s that I really like collecting things and there’s seemingly no limit to the collectibles in this game. It could also be the fact that Nintendo has again developed another knockout that I can experience while sitting right beside my friends: they can swear at me in person instead of over a mic, and that’s a major oversight of most games these days. Whatever it is (it’s more than likely a culmination of all of these things and more), I’m absolutely enamoured with Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, and with the revelation of DLC and the idea that bugs can be patched (sorry advanced tech-ers), as well as its sheer addictiveness, people are going to be in love with this game for a long, long time. Me included.

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U scores a smash-tacular 5/5. Go buy it, go buy it right now.

Briefly: If you haven’t yet jumped into Bungie and Activision’s Destiny, you now have one less excuse not to play it: The publisher has just detailed a trial version of what may be this year’s most addictive shooter (which still has a ton of issues which we totally go into on Geekscape Games… yep, shameless plug).

The free version (which is called a trial on PS4/Xbox One and demo on PS3/Xbox 360) is available today, and Bungie has answered any questions that players may have (mostly regarding character progression) via their latest blog post:

When I’m ready to buy the full game, will my character progression be transferred?
Yes, assuming you purchase the full retail copy of Destiny on the same console platform family you played the Destiny Trial or Demo on. For example, you may not transfer your progress from the Destiny Demo on Xbox 360 to the full retail version of Destiny on PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 3.

Progress is always shared automatically within the same console family on the Destiny servers. No action on your part is required.

How do I upgrade to the full game?
The Destiny Trial on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One can be upgraded via the in game menu. You will not be required to download the full retail game or purchase a disc.

To get the full version of Destiny on PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360, purchase Destiny from your local retailer, the Xbox Store, or the Playstation Store. Once you have launched the full version of Destiny, and confirmed that your existing character progression can be selected, you may delete the Destiny Demo file, as you will no longer require it.

The demo/trial offers “a sampling of character creation and progression, story mission content, along with cooperative and social activities.” Not bad for free, and a great way for Activision to sell a ton of copies this holiday season. Will you be checking out the trial? Or are you already well versed in Destiny and it’s wonderful (hah) Grimoire?

Briefly: Now this is an adaptation I’d love to see (well, not as much as a Y: The Last Man series, but I’ll take what I can get).

According to Deadline, FX has started working on an event series based on Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell’s From Hell, which is “the story of Jack the Ripper, perhaps the most infamous man in the annals of murder. Detailing the events leading up to the Whitechapel killings and the cover-up that followed, From Hell is a meditation on the mind of a madman whose savagery and violence gave birth to the 20th century.”

Don Murphy, who also produced the film adaptation (and Transformers…) is set to produce the series, which will be written by Children of Men screenwriter David Arata. Now, this is a property that was probably always best suited to a series, because it’s so freaking long. Having the opportunity to go far more in depth than the film adaptation ever did can only mean good things for this version, and I cannot wait to see what comes from it.

Details on the series are essentially non-existent at this point, but we’ll be sure to fill you in as soon as we learn more. Are you down for a From Hell series? Sound out below!

Briefly: It’s still over a year from release, and we still don’t know what it’s about, but the theatrical teaser trailer for next Winter’s Peanuts has just hit the web, and it’s freaking glorious.

Now, somehow I grew up (like went all the way through childhood) without really being introduced to the franchise. That being said, this looks so hype (that’s for you, Shane) that I’m really interested in going back to see what I’ve missed.

The teaser really gives away nothing from the film (again, we still have no idea of its plot), but it’s definitely, definitely worth the watch. Take a look below.

Briefly: It’s been nearly a year since Telltale Games revealed adventure titles based on both Borderlands and Game of Thrones, and while the company has kept details scarce on both games thus far, they’ve just blown the lid open… at least on Tales from the Borderlands.

The just-released two and a half minute trailer should do a damn good job of exciting Borderlands fans, and the developer has also revealed some casting and release info for the game, which is set to debut very soon.

As for casting, here’s what Telltale has revealed so far:

The season will feature Troy Baker as Rhys, Laura Bailey as Fiona, Chris Hardwick as Vaughn, Erin Yvette as Sasha, Patrick Warburton as Vasquez, and Dameon Clarke as Handsome Jack. Additional casting details from the season are yet to be announced.

In the game, you’ll “play as Rhys, a Hyperion ‘suit’ with dreams of being the next Handsome Jack, and Fiona, a Pandoran con artist looking to score her biggest ever swindle. Thrown together as unwilling partners in an adventure to recover cash they both think is theirs, their journey will take you on a wild ride where gangsters, bandit lords, and Vault Hunters are just some of the obstacles you’ll encounter, in this new take on the award-winning universe created by Gearbox Software.”

The season will run Telltale’s standard five-episodes (a standard which the Game of Thrones game is actually set to break) and will release on PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PC/Mac, and later iOS and Android devices. A season pass will cost a cool (and more than fair) $19.99US ($24.99 on PC/Mac), and as always, will get you each and every episode as it releases.

I’ve only recently discovered (and fallen in love with) the Borderlands series, and as a huge fan of essentially everything that Telltale touches, I cannot wait to make some uncomfortable choices in this world. Take a look at the first trailer below, and we’ll be sure to share more info as soon as we have it.

Briefly: Remember that freaking weird Mario Kart themed Mercedes ad that preceded the release of the Mercedes Mario Kart DLC?

Well, the luxury car manufacturer just released two additional, even more ridiculous spots. Great timing, seeing as we’re getting our first pack of fantastic paid DLC for the game in just a few days. This time around, the ads give us a look at both Luigi and Peach, and… well, take a look at the weirdness below.

http://youtu.be/53KpSKm4eHM

I still find it hard to believe that those are real, but I’m loving every second of them. Are you planning to pick up the new DLC?

Briefly: Summit Entertainment today debuted the first teaser trailer (and poster) for the next chapter in the Divergent series, Insurgent.

In the film, the stakes are raised “for Tris as she searches for allies and answers in the ruins of a futuristic Chicago. Tris (Woodley) and Four (James) are now fugitives on the run, hunted by Jeanine (Winslet), the leader of the power-hungry Erudite elite. Racing against time, they must find out what Tris’s family sacrificed their lives to protect, and why the Erudite leaders will do anything to stop them. Haunted by her past choices but desperate to protect the ones she loves, Tris, with Four at her side, faces one impossible challenge after another as they unlock the truth about the past and ultimately the future of their world.”

I’m quite looking forward to this one, as I thought that last year’s Divergent did a stellar job of bringing a few original ideas to the tired young-adult genre. Hopefully this continues with Insurgent and beyond!

In any case, take a look at the trailer and poster below, and let us know if you’re looking forward to the film! Insurgent hits theatres on March 20th, 2015!

Insurgent

Well, I know what I want for Christmas. Just listen to this synopsis:

Kris Kringle just lost his wife in a tragic toy accident, and now he’s out to make all those little brats pay! When Santa-skeptic FBI agent Ellie Tewksberry finds her son Byron among the missing, she must fight alongside her wannabe-elf former husband to save him – and Christmas!

It’s called Red Xmas, and it’s a five-issue limited comic series by the insane dudes over at Fried Comics. Yep, these are the guys that brought you Deadskins and Pregnant Bitches of War, the series that Y: The Last Man and Saga creator Brian K. Vaughan called “A comic as audacious as its title.” and our very own Jonathan London deemed “The most messed up comic you should be reading.”

Red Xmas #1 is well on its way to production, and Fried Comics’ has decided to go with the crowdfunding route for the series this time around. Backers will be able to get their hands on digital AND print editions of the book, as well as tons of other goodies like exclusive TPB’s of Pregnant Bitches of War and Deadskins. Crazy things like editor credits and having ‘Your Name Presents’ on the front of every issue are also available if you’re feeling very generous, but just remember that every single dollar that you can offer up counts towards their modest $3000 goal… which they’re already 2/3 of the way to with 9 days remaining.

Want to know where your money’s going? It’s pretty simple:

Glad you asked. FRIED Comics only seeks enough to pay our artists a decent wage for their hard work and deliver copies to our backers.

Of course, a portion of our funds will go towards Kickstarter fees and taxes (on the project. Not, like, our personal stuff).

And if we’re fortunate enough to raise more than our goal, all additional money will go towards production of future issues.

Not bad huh, they just want to pay their artists and get this insanely unique book in people’s hands.

Fried notes that “RED XMAS #1 is well-into production and on track for a Christmas release in digital form. We’ve picked out our printer and will have materials in the mail shortly thereafter.” So backers won’t even have to wait long to get their first taste of this new Santa.

You can head to the Kickstarter campaign page here, take a look at a couple of sample pages below, and look below that for the short and sweet Kickstarter video! Just remember that this Christmas, Santa must die, so join the execution!

Briefly: In just one more week you’ll finally be able to pick up Grand Theft Auto V… again.

Sure, you may have already played the game on your Xbox 360 or Playstation 3, but after checking out the just-released launch trailer, you’re very likely going to want need to head back to Los Santos.

Rockstar says that “Grand Theft Auto V will take full advantage of the power of the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC with across-the-board graphical and technical improvements to deliver a stunning new level of detail. Increased draw distances, finer texture details, denser traffic, and enhanced resolutions all work together to bring new life to the cities, towns, deserts and oceans of Rockstar North’s epic reimagining of Southern California.”

It’ll include all the content that’s been released for the game so far, as Rockstar notes that “gameplay created since the launch of Grand Theft Auto Online, including an extensive array of new Jobs, an arsenal of new weapons, scores of new vehicles, new properties and player customizations will also be available for the PlayStation 4 system, Xbox One and PC with much more to come. In addition, the current community of players will have the ability to transfer their Grand Theft Auto Online characters and progression to their choice of PlayStation 4, Xbox One or PC.”

We can’t wait. I never actually finished the PS3 version of the title, so it’ll be as good a reason as any for me to jump right back into it. Take a look at the launch trailer below, and let us know if you’ll be picking this one up.

Briefly: However you’re feeling about Amiibo’s after the recent reveal of the final product (we gave our thoughts on figures extensively on the last two episodes of Geekscape Games, here and here), this is a pretty damned intriguing idea.

Nintendo has partnered with the fantastic folks over at Loot Crate for an ‘Amiibo Subscription Service’, which will deliver 10 pre-selected Amiibo figures to subscriber’s doors.

Here are the currently released details, straight from the big N:

With the holidays fast approaching and excitement for amiibo growing every day, the popular online delivery service Loot Crate is helping fans receive select amiibo figures after they launch on Nov. 21. By signing up for an “amiibo Subscription Service,” subscribers will receive 10 pre-selected amiibo (including Mario, Pikachu, Donkey Kong, Fox and Yoshi) separated into three special Loot Crate shipments throughout the holiday season without ever having to leave their homes.

“Featuring compatibility with Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Mario Kart 8 and Hyrule Warriors this year, amiibo figures are shaping up to be one of the year’s must-have holiday items,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “Fans around the country already enjoy Loot Crate’s approach to delivering cool new items every month, and now they have a new and convenient way to get their hands on amiibo.”

“We are honored to be working with Nintendo – a company that our team loves and respects, and that many of us grew up with,” said Chris Davis, Loot Crate’s CEO. “The iconic Super Smash Bros. games have brought people together for years, and we’re excited to become a part of that story in a new way through our amiibo Subscription Service.”

By joining the subscription service, Loot Crate guarantees the 10 pre-selected amiibo, and allows subscribers to avoid the hassle of rushing to retailers to find their favorite characters. In addition to Mario, Pikachu, Donkey Kong, Fox and Yoshi, the other five pre-selected characters will be revealed through Loot Crate soon. Super Smash Bros. for Wii UMario Kart 8 and Hyrule Warriors will feature amiibo compatibility this year, with functionality for Captain Toad: Treasure TrackerKirby and the Rainbow CurseYoshi’s Wooly WorldMario Party 10 and more coming in the future.

Nintendo and Loot Crate also have a few additional surprises in store for Super Smash Bros. and amiibo fans, so check back with Loot Crate for further details. For more information about how to participate in the limited-time “amiibo Subscription Service,” visit http://www.lootcrate.com/amiibo.

Note that Nintendo does note that the service is available for a limited time, so if you’re at all interested, you should definitely keep your ears open.

Briefly: It’s hard to believe that it was nearly a year ago that Telltale Games announced that they were working on an adventure game based on Game of Thrones. That was all the way back in December of 2013, and as always, Winter is coming once again.

Since then, Telltale has been pretty scarce on details for the upcoming adventure, just recently noting that the game will have players playing as five different characters, all from the same family, and that your choices “will affect everyone in the family.”

Today, Telltale teased us all with an official image from the series, revealing that the first episode is titled Iron From Ice, and will be part of the titles six-episode first season (of which I’m sure there will be more).

Take a look at the image below, and be sure to let us know what you want to see from the game! The first episode is set to debut before the end of 2014!

Briefly: The second iteration of Super Smash Bros. this year is finally almost here! We’ve all been absolutely destroying our fingers and joysticks in locations we’d never even dreamed of for well over a month at this point. In just a couple of weeks, it’ll be time to bring the fight home (and add four more players and a ton of new modes) and give those sore fingers a rest… Or, you know, make them even more sore on a different controller.

Today, the opening cinematic for the Wii U edition of the game has made its way online, and it’s going to make the next couple of weeks of waiting very, very hard (for you guys, my copy should arrive later today). The video shows some choice footage from all of the game’s many characters, and at its core is simply a fun and exciting watch.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go get a few matches in to calm myself down. Take a look at the cinematic below, and let us know how many copies of this one you’ll be picking up!
