Briefly: X-Men: Apocalypse is finally almost here, and the film may be receiving a mixed reception thus far, but it’d be hard to deny that this new viral video is fantastic.

The video plays off like a cheesy 1980’s VHS tape, and has Lana Condor’s Jubilee essentially making you want to enrol in Xavier’s School For Gifted Youngsters.

Take a look at the video below, and be sure to let us know what you think! X-Men: Apocalypse hits theatres on May 27th!

She sure makes the school look like a peaceful place, doesn’t she?

Also, that phone number at the end of the video? Be sure to give it a call.

Following the critically acclaimed global smash hit X-Men: Days of Future Past, director Bryan Singer returns with X-MEN: APOCALYPSE. Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshipped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender), to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) with the help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction.

HOOOOOOOOOLY CRAP!

Earlier today during an interview with Asashi, Nintendo President Tatsumi Kimishima confirmed that the company is once again ready to step into the realm of movies. Not much more is known about this new business venture, but what we do know is that they’re planning on releasing the first of many movies by 2018 or 2019 (That’s only 2-3 years!) Hopefully this works out for them better than the last time they tried it (although to be honest, I do enjoy myself some live action Super Mario Bros. Movie every now and then.) What do you think? Are you excited for Nintendo’s venture back into movies, or do you think they should just stick with gaming? Tell us in the comments below!

Briefly: We’re now barely a month away from the heavily anticipated release of Duncan Jones’ Warcraft, and today Legendary has debuted another (short) teaser for the film, this time featuring the assassin Garona.

In Warcraft, the peaceful realm of Azeroth stands on the brink of war as its civilization faces a fearsome race of invaders: Orc warriors fleeing their dying home to colonize another. As a portal opens to connect the two worlds, one army faces destruction and the other faces extinction. From opposing sides, two heroes are set on a collision course that will decide the fate of their family, their people and their home.

It’s an action-packed teaser that should certainly drive excitement for the film! Take a look at the video below, and be sure to let us know what you think! Warcraft hits theatres on June 10th!

We live in strange times. Strange times indeed.

Snowden is the stylized, “Hollywood” take on the Edward Snowden story. EX-CIA contractor who leaked documents detailing a global surveillance program perpetrated by the NSA. It was such a perverse invasion of privacy that it spurred countless investigations into the US Government, many of which are still going on today.

TL;DR NSA has your dick pics. Seriously.

Check out the trailer for Snowden.

I really don’t feel too “right” about this movie. Joseph Gordon Levitt does a TERRIBLE job impersonating Edward Snowden, and Zachary Quinto as Glenn Greenwald?

This is going to attempt to distill a very important story down into a 2 hour drama. Why all the sex? Why all the weird “hacking” graphics? I feel like director Oliver Stone was attempting to recreate the famous Hack The Gibson scene from Hackers.

https://youtu.be/8wXBe2jTdx4

It’s the Julian Assange story all over again.

Snowden hits theaters September 16th. Do yourself a favor and see Citizenfour first.

File this under, “odd but kinda makes sense”. Wesley Snipes and his Maandi Media DMM production company are joining forces with WWE Studios to bring fans a multi-picture deal.

The first in the agreement is the already announced Temple. Starring Snipes himself, Anne Heche, Dave Annable and WWE wrestler Seth Rollings, Temple is being co-produced by Gene Simmons. Yeah, THAT Gene Simmons.

In the Press Release Michael Luisi, President of WWE Studios said:

We are always looking for the ideal talent to extend our brand and Wesley is the right combination of action movie star and savvy producer, We look forward to creating exciting new content with the perfect partner.

The second film under the new partnership is set to start production this year, but no word as to WHAT we can expect from that release. We can easily surmise that it’s going to be action packed (super action?). Snipes said in the release that he’s looking to have some fun with this one:

The action genre has been a very big and important part of my career. There is no better way to extend my love for dynamic action based entertainment than with a company like WWE, who have been entertaining fans for decades with incredible visuals and deliciously entertaining storylines. Maandi strives to create elevated multi-media content that appeals to all demographics worldwide – from childhood fan to feature film collaborators.  Wow, sooo cool!  We are all incredibly excited to share visions.

Temple is set to release sometime this year.

Be sure to keep an eye here on Geekscape, we’ll definitely be keeping you up to date on this awesome new partnership.

We’re a little under a month away from the release of the next in the X-Men franchise, and the hype machine is starting to hit the redline. Check out the final trailer for X-Men: Apocalupse

My only question; Why do mutants hate bridges so much? X-3 and now THIS!

X-Men: Apocalypse hits theaters May 27th!

Briefly: We’re now less than two months away from the heavily anticipated release of Duncan Jones’ Warcraft, and today at PAX East the celebrated director debuted a bad-ass new poster for the film.

It’s a gorgeous image featuring the female Orc Draka, and she definitely doesn’t look like someone you’d want to mess with!

Take a look at the new poster below, and be sure to let us know what you think! Warcraft hits theatres on June 10th!

Draka

You read that right! We have our first confirmed appearance of an Avenger in the newest Spider-Man reboot. For those of you who have read Civil War, Iron Man and Spidey have a sort of relationship where Stark gives Parker some new tech to go with a new suit.

IronSpider

For those of you keeping count, this DOES NOT count as one of those contractual appearances Robert Downey Jr. has with Marvel. Instead, Downey was able to negotiate a new contract with Marvel and Sony that makes this entirely separate. Downey will also reprise his role as Iron Man in Infinity War parts one and two.

Spider-Man: Homecoming is set to release July 7, 2017!

WARNING – SPOILERS AHEAD!

Now that you’ve had time to digest everything that was packed into that nearly three hour movie, let’s get to what matters:

WHAT IN THE WORLD WAS FLASH WARNING BRUCE ABOUT?!

Judging by how Batman V Superman ended, there’s a couple of different routes Snyder and co can take in bringing the Justice League to the big screen. If you’ve been reading my recaps on The Flash and other DCTV shows, then you’ll know that I like to start with the facts.

The Flash

Not too far into the film, Bruce is visited by Barry Allen, The Flash. During his brief visit, the Flash warns Bruce, saying, among other things, that “Lois is the key!” The Flash also pleaded with Bruce, shouting “Find us!” Bruce didn’t really have time to react as he was plastered in his chair. I mean, who wouldn’t be?

BRUCE, LISTEN TO ME

IT’S LOIS, LOIS LANE. SHE’S THE KEY

AM I TOO EARLY? I’M TOO EARLY

YOU WERE RIGHT ABOUT HIM, YOU’VE ALWAYS BEEN RIGHT ABOUT HIM

FIND US, YOU HAVE TO FIND US

  • The Flash

The Flash was also not wearing his traditional costume and instead wore what looked like to be an armored suit. The helmet covering his face retracted, revealing that he was indeed wearing his traditional costume under the armored suit. For those who have seen the show and have read the comics, it’s no secret that the Flash has the ability to travel through time with use of the Speedforce. Still, we don’t exactly know how powerful this cinematic iteration of Barry Allen will be. For example, maybe he’s not fast enough to travel through time, yet.

theflashspeedforce

In any case, I think it’s clear that the armored suit wasn’t only for protection, but instead a sort of power boost for the Flash. Wrapping up the facts, we know the Flash travelled back in time to warn Bruce of a future where things aren’t going so great. In an effort to change the future, the Flash is hoping that Bruce shapes up and forms the Justice League.

Cyborg

Now that the facts surrounding Flash’s visit are out of the way, let’s go over Cyborg’s origin. In the file Bruce obtained from Lex, we saw a video of Cyborg’s creation, meaning by the time the events of Batman V Superman come around, Cyborg is already running around S.T.A.R. Labs. However, there’s something about Cyborg’s origin that some fans may have missed.

Motherbox

A Mother Box is essentially a super computer developed by the folks of New Genesis. A long time ago, a brutal war between the Old Gods ended in the creation of “The Fourth World.” This place came into existence separate from the universe as we know it. Since then, the two worlds that occupy that space have been locked in an eternal war. These two worlds are known as Apokolips and New Genesis. Mother Boxes are found on New Genesis and are sometimes referenced as living computers. They are comprised of an element called Element X and have also been known to sacrifice themselves for a greater cause.

cyborg boom tube

In the context of Batman v. Superman, it would appear that Dr. Stone used a Mother Box on his son and created Cyborg. This would render Cyborg to be a huge asset to the Justice League because of his knowledge and access to tech not of this world. This tech would also allow Cyborg to combat anyone from New Genesis and Apokolips, but more importantly, it would allow him to create and access Boom Tubes which brings us back to how Flash was able to reach Bruce.

As for how Dr. Stone was able to get a hold of a Mother Box, we don’t know. Perhaps Lex has already captured Scott Free, aka Mister Miracle, and is keeping him somewhere secret. Miracle is the son of the ruler of New Genisis. After being traded to Darkseid as part of a peace treaty, Free escaped to Earth and has used the planet as a sort of hiding place from Darkseid. If this is the case, it could be that Lex was using him as a bargaining chip upon Darkseid’s arrival.

A Future Without the Justice League

Fans of The Flash may be wrong in thinking Barry simply ran so fast he traveled back in time. I think the right frame of thinking here is that Cyborg is responsible for opening the Boom Tube, and that, combined with Flash’s speed, allowed time travel to be possible. This duo may be the only heroes left in a future where the Justice League never formed. It would explain where the Flash got the armored suit from (Cyborg), and it would explain why the Flash went too far back in time. The calculations of time travel may be difficult, but it would also be increasingly difficult if both Cyborg and the Flash were working against the clock.

Darkseid

In this future without the League, there is a threat so large that Cyborg and Flash see no other alternative than to warn Bruce in the past with the hope that they can change the future. A threat this large brings only a few possibilities to mind.

darksied

At the end of Batman V Superman, Luthor says something along the lines of “the bell has been rung.” Something is coming. As far as alien threats go, and because a Mother Box may be involved, I would have to go with the theory that Darkseid is coming. Darkseid would be a perfect villain to set up the Justice League films (there are two announced so far).

Injustice

One common theme found in Batman V Superman is that Lois is Superman’s world. Nothing matters more than her, and Lex was able to take advantage of that weakness. I counted maybe four instances where Lois was built to be the driving force behind Superman’s good will and belief in humanity. Should Lois die, or should Superman be tricked into killing Lois, then we can expect Superman to go into a very dark place.

The Injustice storyline involves a timeline in which Superman becomes a ruthless tyrant, controlling the entire planet. This alternate timeline fits very well within the context of Bruce’s nightmare he had in the desert. If you noticed, all of Superman’s mercs were wearing “S” patches on their shoulders. Along with the mercs, Batman also encountered Parademons. In the comics, Parademons act as Darksied’s personal soldiers. They are genetically created in labratories on Apokolips from Human DNA. They are also usually sent in advance to planets Darkseid wishes to invade. The DC cinematic universe would go into a very dark place if it were to suggest Superman is using Human DNA on Earth to create an army.

injustice

The biggest supporting evidence behind this is The Flash saying “You were right, you’ve always been right about him.” This suggests that Batman was right in not trusting Superman for the majority of the film.

A Combination of Both

Who knows? Maybe Darkseid does arrive on Earth and Batman fails at protecting Lois. After defeating Darkseid, it would be entirely possible for Superman to become they tyrant we’ve seen in Injustice. Let’s also remember the Omega symbol that Bruce saw in his “Knightmare.” The Omega symbol is usually tied to Darkseid.

omega bvs

We also have to remember that it will take years to see how all this plays out. The best thing about all this is that DCU is just getting started.

Briefly: We’re now just a few months away from the heavily anticipated release of Duncan Jones’ Warcraft, and Legendary has just debuted a gorgeous new poster for the film.

It’s a gorgeous image that showcases the Orc vs. Human struggle, and based on all of the footage that we’ve seen so far, there are set to be some mighty battles ahead for these two armies.

Take a look at the new poster below, and be sure to let us know what you think! Warcraft hits theatres on June 10th!

File this under 100% pure nostalgia pleasing. Nickelodeon, the network that helped sculpt 90’s kids into the ironic hipsters that we are, is going back to it’s roots. They have green-lit a live action Legends of The Hidden Temple movie based off of the hit game show!

Production begins in March on the film. Unfortunately we aren’t going to be seeing the Purple Parrots failing to get across the water in the opening games. This is a high stakes action adventure movie based on the show. Three kids are after an ancient Mayan treasure as they embark on a journey into a…Mayan hidden temple.

The TV movie Legends of the Hidden Temple will follow three siblings who break away from a lackluster temple tour in a jungle, finding themselves immersed in a real-life mission comprised of obstacles that they must complete in order to escape alive. The TV movie will feature elements from the original game show including: Olmec, a talking head who knows the secrets behind the temple; The Steps of Knowledge, the entrance to the temple and launching pad for the mission; and cameos from a green monkey, red jaguar, and silver snakes, among others.  Legends of the Hidden Temple is executive produced by Scott McAboy and Jessica Rhoades, and produced by Amy Sydorick. The TV movie is directed by Joe Menendez (From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series) and written by Jonny Umansky & Zach Hyatt, and Alex Reid.

This announcement is on the heels of a push for Nickelodeon to bring their 90’s programming to the 10’s.

I cannot wait to see this movie. Yeah it will be for a much younger audience, but Legends of The Hidden Temple was one of my favorite shows growing up. One thing I love about seeing properties from my youth redone, is getting all the different references to the original work.

No release date has been announced.

You’re probably already well aware (I mean, it’s not even Sunday yet and we’ve been seeing fantastic commercials releasing in droves including a fantastic Pokemon ad), but Super Bowl 50 is less than two days away!

If you’re anything like me (and if you’re reading Geekscape, you probably are, and I’m sorry)… you have little to no interest in the event. Unless there is booze, that is, and in that case I am VERY interested in it.

So, we at Geekscape have put together our Top 5 favorite alternatives to watching the big game!

5 – Blood Bowl

Blood Bowl Image

Blood Bowl is the Warhammer: Fantasy take on football itself. Set in the mythical land of Warhammer, it pits two players against each other in a turn based game of football. Each player chooses from a selection of fantasy races, naturally with their own advantages and disadvantages. Additionally, players can hire and level up non-fielded characters such as Cheerleaders, Assistant Coaches, and even Healers. All boost the statistics of the players on the field. The best part of the game, is where the actual BLOOD comes into play. It’s not just about moving the ball down the field, its about trying to injure or kill opposing players.

You can play Blood Bowl all old school (on the tabletop itself, painting up figures and sets). OR you can find a digital version of the game on PC, PS4, Xbox One, Google Play, Amazon Store and iOS.

For more information check out the Blood Bowl Fan League!

4 – Online Gaming (Rocket League, CS:GO, League of Legends)

Rockete League Image

Around major events like the Super Bowl and national holidays, the online servers for A LOT of games see their populations dwindle. The casual players get all wrapped up in the festivities, and all that’s left are the die hard players.

If you really want to test your skill in games like Rocket League or CS:GO, then there is no better time than this very Sunday. You can tell your friends and family that you’re practicing for the eSports league, and that they will be watching you play League of Legends on the big screen in a few years…. Hey, a Geek can dream about more than just cartoon ponies, can’t he?

3 – Sports Related Manga

Prince of Tennis Image

Much like the Rule 34 of the internet (my favorite rule, if you’re curious), if it exists, there is a Manga about it. Japanese manga are so ubiquitous that essentially everyone around is able to find something they’re interested in confined to a half-inch thick book.

From titles like Prince of Tennis, King Golf, Hikaru no Go, and Initial D, you are sure to find the book of your fancy.

Check out this list of The Top 50 Sports Related Manga’s from OtakuSmash and be amazed. I never would have dreamed I be interested in fishing manga!

2 – Kaiju Movie Marathon

Godzilla Kaiju Image

If you have no interest in watching a bunch of big guys run around a field and beat each other up for a few hours, then why don’t you watch a bunch of big guys in MONSTER SUITS run around and beat each other up for a few hours!

There are so many to choose from that you don’t even have to limit yourself to just Godzilla and friends! Get some buddies, fire up the Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, Torrents (not Torrents) or if you’re a die hard Kaiju fan break out those antique VHS tapes.

For a lighthearted twist on the big monster movie genre, you can snag yourself some episodes of MST3K! Their personal twist on the Gamera films always leave me in stitches.

1 – ACTUALLY WATCH THE GAME!

watching football image

Didn’t see this one coming, did you? I know this may be counter intuitive to what this entire list is about, but actually watch the game! Get some of your friends together, get some bad food and alcohol and enjoy the damned festivities. Even if you’re like me and have ZERO interest in football, there is so much to offer.

The commercials alone should be enough to attract all the Geeks. We have plenty of hilarious commercials that will be the talk of the Twittersphere (or… Facebookverse?) come Monday, and you don’t want to be out of the loop. Keep an eye out for appearances from some internet famous (it’s a thing) people like The Texas Law Hawk and Giorgio Tsoukalos. We will also see plenty of Geeky ones too. The biggest (for us geeks) is the long-awaited Pokemon 20th Anniversary ad. Yeah, we all have already seen it, but seeing it on air is going to be exciting!

Aside from the commercials, of course there is also the legendary Half-Time show. Last years Katy Perry performance literally had me smiling from ear to ear (she always does), and for the last 11 years we’ve all been hoping for another wardrobe malfunction like we had back in 2004.

If you don’t have television, or are a cordcutter don’t fret! There are plenty of free, LEGAL, options to watch the big game. LifeHacker has compiled a giant list, but the easiest is snagging the CBS sports apps on your favorite streaming platform.

SO GEEKS! What are you going to be doing come Sunday? We’d love to hear what everyone has planned!

The post apocalyptic Zorro reboot film has just landed it’s director. In other news, there is a post apocalyptic Zorro reboot film in the works.

Sobini Films announced today, in a press release over at ComingSoon, that Gravity screenwriter Jonas Cuaron will be writing and directing the upcoming Zorro reboot.

Sobini Films’ CEO Mark Amin and  Lantica Media’s CEO Antonio Gennari had this to say:

When I saw Desierto, I was impressed with Jonás’s command of action and suspense, his great visual eye, and the strong performances he elicited from his actors. We are very fortunate to have Jonás on this film. His love of cinema is evident in his work and he is very talented in his ability to tell a compelling story. We look forward to seeing where his vision will take us.

If “post apocalyptic Zorro reboot film” sounds familiar to you then it does. As far back as 2013, 20th Century Fox was in the process of creating their own Zorro reboot. Tentatively titled Zorro: Reborn , it was set in a near future southern California. You may remember the pitch trailer that director Ricardo de Montreuil made as a proof of concept of the film. You can see that below.

There is no word if the above Zorro: Reborn pitch trailer has ANY barring on the upcoming reboot (currently titled Z).

The character of Zorro goes all the way back to 1919. Zorro is the masked identity of rich playboy Don Diego de la Vega. He would don a black mask, cape and brandish a sword. He was the protector of the common man, and was most likely a huge influence in the creation of Batman.

The character has been a point of contention for copyright holders, as the character himself is public domain.

Principle filming of begins this Summer. No release date has been announced.

Briefly: We’re still a couple of seasons away from Legendary’s beyond anticipated Warcraft adaptation to finally hit the big screen, and today the film’s first TV spot has hit the web, showing off some more incredible effects, as well as making us remember that director Duncan Jones is likely having a really tough time right now (sorry, Duncan).

In any case, it’s a great spot, that showcases a little more of what our humans and Orcs are set to endure during the feature. In the film, the peaceful realm of Azeroth stands on the brink of war as its civilization faces a fearsome race of invaders: Orc warriors fleeing their dying home to colonize another. As a portal opens to connect the two worlds, one army faces destruction and the other faces extinction. From opposing sides, two heroes are set on a collision course that will decide the fate of their family, their people and their home.

Take a look at the spot below, and let us know what you think! Warcraft hits theatres on June 10th!

We’re only a few weeks away until Pride and Prejudice and Zombies hits theaters, and we are so freaking hype we can’t stand it!

Yes, a movie with a title that sounds like a six year old reciting his Christmas list has gotten these geeks amped. The more I read and see about the film, the more I think this is a chocolate peanutbutter situation.

Check out the violent, and T&A filled trailer below! I am an ass and leg man, and this trailer has got plenty of both!

The only downside of this trailer for me, is the out of place nu-metal cover of These Boots Are Made For Walkin’.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies hits theaters February 5th!

Can you believe that 2015 is coming to a close? In just a couple of days, we’ll abolish that dreaded five for ten more years, and a cool, clean, sexy six will take its place.

2015 has been an incredible year for all forms of media, so as always, we rounded up our ever-growing pool of writers to share their favorite things of 2015. Yesterday, we published the list of our favourite video games of 2015, and next up, Movies!

Take a look at everyone’s top 10, top 5, or favourite film altogether, and be sure to let us know yours in the comment section below!

#1. Me and Earl and the Dying Girl

Typically we have to wait until November and December to catch the best films the cinematic year has to offer. Yet, 2015’s finest entry, Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, came straight out of the Sundance Film Festival in January and reached theaters nationwide by summertime. The emotional coming-of-age story follows a high school loner (Thomas Mann) who forms an unlikely bond with a female classmate (Olivia Cooke) recently diagnosed with cancer. Superb performances, well-timed humor and excellent direction each help in transcending the film far beyond its all too familiar premise.

#2. Room

Lenny Abrahamson’s unforgettable drama is one that will stick with you long after the credits roll. Brie Larson has emerged as the Oscar frontrunner in the Best Actress category for her soulful performance as a young female sex slave being held captive in a 10 foot by 10 foot room. After years of abuse she finally gives birth to her captor’s son (Jacob Tremblay), and she must raise him in this sheltered environment where “room” becomes the only world he’s ever known. Room is a thought provoking and emotional roller coaster that consumes your attention from start to finish.

#3. Infinitely Polar Bear

During my film-watching journey at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, while everyone clamored for the Best Picture nominee, Whiplash, I threw my support into a much different corner. Infinitely Polar Bear tells a more light-hearted side of a bi-polar father, Cam Stuart (Mark Ruffalo), who’s struggling to keep both his employment and his family. After separating from his wife (Zoe Saldana), a rare opportunity allows her to venture from Boston to New York in order to attend graduate school. In the meantime, an unstable Cam is left to care for their two young daughters. This Mr. Mom comedy is a heartfelt and hilarious film that recently shocked the industry after Ruffalo landed an unexpected Golden Globe nomination for his impressive onscreen work.

#4. Spotlight

Although it’s been a tempered cinematic year, Tom McCarthy’s gripping true story drama, Spotlight, has solidified itself as a Best Picture juggernaut. Set during the early 2000s, the film follows The Boston Globe’s investigative reporting team (known as “Spotlight”) and its diligent efforts to expose the Catholic church’s massive child abuse scandal and cover-up. There are a plethora of strong characters and fine performances scattered throughout the film’s lengthy unveiling of the truth. Any other year Spotlight may feel like a watered down choice for Best Picture, but it’s one of the 2015’s finest offerings.

#5. The Revenant

With all eyes on Leonardo DiCaprio’s desperate quest for Oscar immortality, The Revenant has evolved into the year’s most mysterious selection. Thankfully, I was able to catch a screening early in December and can confirm that it’s an impressive feat of filmmaking. Oscar winning director, Alejandro G. Inarritu, does a remarkable job of placing you into the time and setting of 1820s frontier life where Leo stars as famed explorer, Hugh Glass, who is left for dead by a member of his expedition team (Tom Hardy) after a violent grisly attack. Yet, rather than die peacefully, Glass fights to survive harsh winter conditions until he regains enough strength to seek vengeance on his nemesis. It’s a lengthy and brutally violent affair, but certainly worth the investment.

#6. Brooklyn

It may be hard to believe, but behind this macho exterior is a big softy. Therefore, you shouldn’t be surprised to see John Crowley’s charming love story, Brooklyn, nestled comfortably on my top 10 list. Saoirse Ronan will almost assuredly find her way into the Best Actress race for her portrayal of Eilis, a young Irish immigrant who leaves her mother and sister behind as she ventures to the U.S. during the 1950s in hopes of a better life. Homesickness becomes nearly unbearable for her until she meets an Italian plumber named Tony (Emory Cohen). But despite their natural chemistry and affection for one another, their relationship is put to the test when Eilis unexpectedly must return to Ireland. There’s no shortage of laughs in this otherwise crowd-pleasing romantic drama.

#7. Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Anticipation was certainly high for J.J. Abrams’ first shot at the iconic Star Wars franchise. The Force Awakens didn’t disappoint as the 500+ day countdown until Episode VIII is already in motion. Yes, there were a large number of similarities between A New Hope and the latest entry, but Abrams does a spectacular job of using this familiarity to his advantage all while branding a fresh new set of characters to take over the saga. The Force Awakens is a wonderful transitional film that sets up its next installment very well. Now, if only Abrams would climb back into the director’s chair for another go-around, all fears would easily subside.

#8. The End of the Tour

There’s something profound and existential about James Ponsoldt’s masterful 2015 work, The End of the Tour. As a fan or his entire filmography, this title manages to elevate the collection even further. The film centers around Rolling Stone Magazine interviewer, David Lipsky (Jesse Eisenberg), on a five-day road trip with American author, David Foster Wallace (Jason Segel), during the closing parts of his book tour for the acclaimed novel, “Infinite Jest”. This dialogue-heavy journey forms a very personal and insightful connection with the viewer, clearly labeling The End of the Tour as a thinking man’s movie. Jason Segel’s turn is the finest work of his career and a performance that has been unjustly omitted from the awards season discussion.

#9. The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

Despite my minimal interest in seeing the film, I was pleasantly surprised to discover one of the year’s most entertaining movie experiences. Set during the height of the 1960s Cold War with Russia, news of a criminal organization with plans of mass producing nuclear weapons forms the unlikeliest of duos comprised of American CIA agent, Napolean Solo (Henry Cavill), and a Russian KGB operative (Armie Hammer). Supporting star, Alicia Vikander, has had herself quite a year with other major releases, The Danish Girl and Ex-Machina, to add to her profile of work. Together, this trio of stars lead an action-packed and fun-filled secret mission that plays wonderfully as both a spy film and a comedy wrapped beautifully into one magnificent package.

#10. The Hateful Eight

When it comes to unique storytelling and dialogue unlike any other, Quentin Tarantino is your guy. Those shining attributes continue to exist in his latest Western, The Hateful Eight. I’ve always been a fan of plays and Tarantino stages his film in such a framework. This long-winded three hour affair is separated by a perfectly-timed intermission that also serves as a sturdy divide between the film’s vastly different halves. A wordy introduction to a collection of untrustworthy characters snowed in together during a blizzard, eventually culminates in typical Tarantino fashion as a visceral and bloody showdown that refuses to hold back. Although I would still admit a preference to Django Unchained, The Hateful Eight is a very strong and worthy film in its own right.

Honorable Mentions: The Gift, The Martian, 99 Homes and Kilo Two Bravo

Jonathan London

Looking back at my past years’ selections for Favorite Movies of the year and comparing it to 2015, this is for sure my most Geekscape-friendly year of all. Almost every title on the list is a sci-fi, superhero or genre picture! But still, looking at the list, I’ll argue that there’s a good range of differences between them, from Documentary to Animation to Sports to Live Action Thriller. And of course, you’ve got the Star Wars. Thanks for coming back to us, Star Wars!

10. The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

Did any of you even see this movie? If not, you absolutely missed out as it was some of the most fun that I had in the theater in 2015. This is one of my favorite Guy Ritchie movies and he nails the pop-energy, dialogue, wit and charm of the 1960s spy film while cranking the whole genre to 11. From the opening sequence in East Berlin to the multiple twists and turns of the character and plot machinations, The Man From U.N.C.L.E. was a complete surprise. It’s a shame that audiences didn’t turn out for it as it not only set up for a sequel but promised to take things to a whole new level with it. This is going to be a fun movie to re-watch (second only to the energy of Mad Max: Fury Road on the Zip Pop Editing And Crazy Camera Moves Scale) and it also contains my favorite interrogation scene in recent memory (you’ll know it when you see it… and you will laugh your ass off, you twisted, twisted puppy, you).

9…? – The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened? / The Toy Masters

Hmm… two genre fan documentaries made out of sheer love and ceaseless curiosity… and I have them TIED FOR 9TH. No… maybe one of these is 9th and one of these is 10th. I just can’t decide which because they both do an incredible job of answering questions about topics I love that I never knew that my fandom was even asking! Jon Schnepp’s The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened? is fantastic… potentially the best fan documentary I’ve ever seen. The interviews and revelations in this film about Tim Burton’s deceased late-90s Superman movie are equal measures damning and illuminating. Even as you see the events that lead to its slow and ultimate destruction you’ll be beside yourself wishing that you could watch even 10 seconds of it on screen. This is the closest you are ever going to get and it is more satisfying than you’d ever imagined. The Toy Masters hit me right out of left field. This chronicling of the creation, success and legacy of the He-Man toy and cartoon property might be the most fascinating movie that I saw this year. It focuses on the men, corporations and ideas that gave birth to basically our entire childhood. As a study on ego and delusion, some of the moments within are hard to watch, as several creators vie for authorship of the popular toy character. As a celebration of everything that we loved as kids it exceeds in large amounts, blasting a light on the process of creation on a corporate level and how art, commerce and imagination sometimes meet at just the right time to catch lightning in a bottle… But when the bottle is mishandled the things that spill out of it can shape people’s lives for decades. Very, very amazing documentary storytelling.

8. Inside Out

So Bing Bong might be the single best characters introduced on film in the last 10 years. Yes, Inside Out is a very, very good movie, but it didn’t totally rank as one of my favorite Pixar films. Is it very impressive? Of course! These guys are at the top of their game! The story is tight, the performances and animation are top notch. Really, Inside Out deserves to be on this list just for the continued achievement that it is, maintaining the Pixar standard of quality storytelling! But that character Bing Bong, at one moment making me cry from laughter and the next putting a pin to the balloon of my emotions… Wow. What an incredibly dynamic and amazing creation. Congrats, Pixar, on another trophy from the fans to you!

7. Tomorrowland

Guys, I loved it. From opening scene to the final, rapid action sequence, I fell hard for Brad Bird’s Ode to Positive Thinking. I found it beautiful and flawed in a way that some might have found it preachy and clunky… because the hooks were already in me from the get go. I wanted to love this movie and I did. It’s fun, has a message that we obviously have not heard enough of (even if you thought it beaned you over the head with it… um, that means it hasn’t worked on you yet) and the journey of George Clooney’s Frank Walker might be my favorite character progression of the year. If there’s any flaw in Tomorrowland’s construction, it’s that the protagonist Casey Newton is the same go-for-broke optimist and positive instigator on upon meeting her that she is when the end credits hit. She’s a singular force pointed forward throughout the film. Frank, on the other hand, goes from child to adult and takes us on an incredible voyage of heart break and redemption along the way. If I’m in the minority on this one then I am okay with it. I’ll have the ride all to myself!

6. Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Um… after The Prequels I never thought this movie was going to happen. And then it did. And despite all of the smug reservations about plot similarities and cow-towing to fan service, it was awesome. And it was undeniably Star Wars in a way that we hadn’t seen since Return of the Jedi.. You want more thoughts? Here’s an hours worth between Ian Kerner and I on the podcast.

5. Ant-Man

Hell yes! Keep it weird, Marvel! And keep it funny! If there’s a positive side to the complaint that Marvel’s tent-pole films are getting bigger and more laborious (Avenger: Age of Ultron wasn’t exactly met with the same level of adulation that the first Avengers film was) it’s that Kevin Feige and company can take more risks… or at least what everyone else thinks of as risks! Fun, poppy movies like Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant-Man that explore the wider canvas of the Marvel mythos are what us hardcore, 4-color fans have been waiting for since the first Iron Man knocked it out of the park! And Ant-Man was not only Marvel’s funniest film yet but maybe its most surprising. Equal parts heart, humor and action, I’ve already got a place for it on my Blu-Ray shelf.

4. Sicario

This movie took me by surprise in the best way. I thought I’d seen all I could see with Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin playing gritty sides of the law in movies like Traffic, Savages and No Country For Old Men. But not only did they exceed all of those expectations but they did a fantastic supporting job in supporting Emily Blunt to the best role of her career. Denis Villeneuve gave me one of my favorite movies of 2013 with Prisoners and this study of the complexities of the U.S. Mexico border war gives him a much bigger canvas in which to tell a story (ie. some fantastic action sequences and thought provoking views of the U.S. military). But it never loses the personal feeling of loss and disorientation in our main character that made Prisoners so engaging.

3. Mad Max: Fury Road

The year of revisitations (and at it’s worst “regurgitations”) continues and until Creed entered the ring I didn’t think any movie was going to do it at the level that George Miller delivered with Mad Max: Fury Road. It’s a completely high-octane, breakneck thrill ride and it’s simple story leaves tons of room for Miller to go nuts with his 2000 A.D. style characters, insane action sequences and bold visual designs. This was the movie that really kickstarted the Summer and when the dust settled in August it had left all of the other movies way behind.

2. Creed

Wow. Ryan Coogler’s sophomore film packs more punch than the last few Rocky films combined! From the incredibly shot One Take Masters that bring you right into the ring to the dialogue to the respectfully disciplined and well written homages to the original Rocky films, this movie is above and beyond what any other franchise reinvigorating addition has to offer. Sylvester Stallone’s performance alone is enough to remind everybody that he came of age as an actor alongside the likes of Pacino and DeNiro and deserves to be thought of in the same way. Had he not gone all 80’s Action Hero and Expendable, whose to say what incredible performances we would have witnessed? I’m thankful to have gotten this one and can’t wait to see it again.

1. Ex Machina

As the months went on, Alex Garland’s sci-fi masterpiece about the dangers of A.I. stuck with me. Incredibly well written, directed and put together, there are so many pieces to it that struck a chord and kept me engaged. Oscar Isaac and Domhnall Gleeson have rarely been better but newcomer Alicia Vikander owns every frame she’s in as the robotic experiment that wants to be more than just the sum of her parts. This movie is as thought provoking and horrifying as it is entertaining.

Daniel Campozano

5. Beasts Of No Nation

Netflix’s first forray into original films started off on the right foot. Following the story of a child, forced to join a rebel force after his family and village is decimated caused by a civil war. The film has already garnered Idres Elba a Golden Globe nomination for his role as the Commandant.

4. Mad Max: Fury Road

TONIGHT WE DINE IN THE HALLS OF VALHALLA! The film that wasnt really on my radar. I went on a whim with my brother in law to a midnight showing and boy was i pleasantly surprised at how awesome this film was. Furiosa portrayed by Charlize Theron stole the film as the strong female lead. Tom Hardy was almost secondary to her as they battled Immortan, racing to the green lands.

3. Inside Out

A film that has you running through a gamut of emtions. I sat there reflecting on myself as young child and that of my daughters. Questioning my response to whenever my daughter over reacted to simple situations. Bing Bong. Bing Bong.

2. Ant-Man

This movie was so much fun and and had so much heart that it easily became one of my favorites of the MCU. The highlight of the film was definetly Michael Peña he lieterally stole any scene he was in. I was glad to see that Marvel had invested in a sequel and integrating Ant-Man into the rest of the MCU starting with the upcoming Captain America: Civil War.

1. Star Wars The Force Awakens

This movie accomplished something that most films can’t and that’s live up to the massive hype. The casting was spot on the actors really knocked out of the park. Oscar Isaac as Poe was easily my favorite character he just oozing with charisma. It’s a fantastic start for the trilogy to come.

Gabriel von Grünbaum

Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Well, duh! Such an excellent return to form for the franchise. With so much at stake, J.J. Abrams managed to balance every element needed to make the film work while comfortably laying the groundwork and set up for all the expansion of the galaxy far far away to come. Combined with solid writing, performances and production across the board—everything that went into the film so wonderfully well is as awesome as the story itself.

Krampus

This freakin’ movie comes up out of nowhere and runs off with my heart! Rarely have I felt so charmed by a movie. This exists in the rarefied air of the “delightful horror” movie—that it’s Christmas themed makes it all the more effective. Really, the closest comparison that could be made is Gremlins, another delightful horror that takes place at Christmas. Who knew there could be two distinctly wonderful treats made with so many of the same ingredients?—and then one is gingerbread and the other is chocolate chip! What I’m trying to say is, gobble up Krampus as soon as you can, it satisfies a hunger you may not even realize you have.

Mad Max: Fury Road

A balls to the wall action poem! A diesel fueled opera explosion of fire and survival. If you have yet to shove this deep into your eye sockets you need to reevaluate your life choices. It’s not unlike what NASCAR might be if there was no track to circle, the object was to blow up the competition and all the drivers were from Cirque du Soleil with a death wish.

The Martian

I love the whole story of this story: guy self-publishes his novel, novel sells so well that it gets picked up by a big publishing house, film rights end up in the hands of Ridley-Freakin’-Scott, who goes on to make a fantastic Oscar-worthy film with a top notch cast! Amazing! It’s funny. It’s moving. It’s thrilling. “Get your ass to Mars” for this winner, if you haven’t already.

Jurassic World / Ant-Man and Avengers: Age of Ultron

I’m going to give these a three-way tie for the final spot on this list. This is not a bad thing. I think these films were very successfully in different aspects respectively. Jurassic World was a visual feast! Ant-Man was amusing and accessible! Age of Ultron kept all the various threads of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe connected while dishing up the action! I think I was just hoping to feel and connect a bit more with these than I did—maybe that’s on me? Bottom line, each one is a shouldn’t miss.

Also…

Whereas, I missed a lot in theaters this year so I’m still hoping to enjoy Ex Machina, What We Do in the Shadows, Kingsman: The Secret Service, Me and Earl and the Dying Girl and Age of Adaline. In the next few weeks I’m pretty sure that I’ll be adding Joy and The Hateful Eight to my favorites list.

Room

I don’t really have words to describe just how Room made me feel.

I went into the film as a Brie Larson fan with limited knowledge of the feature, aside from the universal acclaim that the film had been receiving since its TIFF debut.

Really, I don’t want to get into it. This is an unbelievably powerful film, and said power was amplified by the fact that I had no idea what was coming. This was a career-defining performance for Larson, and I really cannot wait to see the opportunities that appear for her from this point forward. Don’t even get me started on little Jacob Tremblay. That kid is AAA star material, no freaking doubt. I absolutely could not believe the incredible range of emotion coming from such a tiny human.

Room is one of the most emotional, affecting films that I’ve seen in my 25 years on this Earth, and if I have just one tip for potential viewers, it’s to not have anything fun planned after you see this movie, because it’s going to shatter your whole heart.

I’m tearing up just thinking about it. What a freaking film.

Crimson Peak

If we had a list for ‘most breathtakingly gorgeous films of 2015’, there’s no doubt in my mind that Crimson Peak would find itself the winner of that category.

Crimson Peak is an impressive tale of gothic romance that was far too overlooked by moviegoing crowds this Fall. Sure, it fared okay at the box office, but due to a disappointing marketing machine and trailers that made it look more like a B-grade horror flick than anything that would bear Del Toro’s celebrated name, this film did not get the recognition that it deserved. It’s almost as though general audiences took the ‘Beware of Crimson Peak’ mantra to heart, and simply avoided this incredible feature.

From the moment that I met with Del Toro a couple of years back at SDCC, and had him explain to me the intricate beauty of the house (right down to the hidden messages in its wallpaper, and the haunting shape of its ceilings), its characters, and more, I knew that I was in for a treat. Then I waited for what felt like forever, and I was not disappointed with the outcome.

Mia Wasikowska was an absolute standout of this star-studded cast, and I cannot wait to see where Hollywood takes her next. Hopefully Crimson Peak gets the viewership that it’s meant for when its feature-laden Blu-Ray drops in February. I implore you to give this one a shot (or ten).

Mad Max: Fury Road

Yep, the above film (Crimson Peak) was the most beautiful film that I saw in 2015, but Mad Max: Fury Road wasn’t far from it. The conversation-worthy practical effects and incredibly realized world had my jaw on the floor throughout Fury Road‘s not-long-enough 2 hour runtime (I was absolutely desperate for more as soon as the credits began to roll).

Seriously, it’s not often that a film comes around that reminds us what movies used to look like (Evil Dead is the last one that I can recall), and Mad Max: Fury Road is an absolute assault on all of your senses (in a good way). Every beautifully photographed and coloured action scene in the film is infinitely rewatchable, and the movie slows down at just the right moments, and just long enough for you to catch your breath.

This was the most technically impressive movie that I saw this year, and it was also one of the best. George Miller, please, please don’t make us wait so long for a sequel (and please give us more Furiosa).

Inside Out

Pixar knows, better than any other studio, how to make a grown man cry. That said, I don’t know if I’ve every cried during a film as much as I have in Inside Out. They’ve absolutely perfected the tear-inducing formula, and now I’m completely terrified to see what they do next.

You’re watching a little girl grow up, and her confused, changing emotions figure out how to balance themselves, and it’s absolutely impossible not to reflect on your own adolescence and relationships.

Learning to adapt, to let go, and to remember what’s important. It’s all in here, and offers one of the most important messages that Pixar has ever made us adults think about. Inside Out is truly Pixar at its best, even though I don’t think that Riley is old enough to be dating just yet.

I’m getting all tingly just *thinking about the film. It’s that powerful.

Ex Machina

What an incredibly impressive directorial debut.

It’s difficult to speak about Ex Machina without potentially ruining some of the intense edge-of-your-seat questions that you’ll constantly and consistently ask through its duration.

Oscar Isaac’s (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) Nathan hires Domhnall Gleeson’s (yep, also from The Force Awakens) Caleb to perform a Turing test on a new model of AI he’s developed, Alicia Vikander’s Ava. Nathan’s mysterious as hell, and it’s not long before Caleb begins to question everything. Although they also have a fantastic bromance to start.

It’s the most though-provoking sci-fi film that I’ve seen in as long as I can remember, and Ex Machina has begun a myriad of intense conversations between my fiance and myself since we first saw the film back in April.

Garland has crafted a gorgeous, smart, and terrifying film that feels a little too real for comfort, and paired with its phenomenal performances, Ex Machina has skyrocketed to become one of my favourite films of all time.

Run and see it, now, and then keep running, because something like this is probably going to happen for real (if it hasn’t already).

Honorable Mentions: It Follows, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Creed

Karson Braaten

When it comes to movies, this year was strange for me. Movies that I looked forward to like The Peanuts Movie and Sinister 2 let me down more than I could imagine. Then highly anticipated summer blockbusters like Jurassic World and Mad Max: Fury Road I have yet to see. Then just like every year, movies that are on my best of year radar like The Hateful Eight and Creed I haven’t had an opportunity to watch. That said, I have been able to come up with five movies that, in no particular order, I can proudly (well mostly) call my top five movies of 2015! … I’d like to replace one of the horror movies with Creed and maybe even Me And Earl And The Dying Girl but, hey, I haven’t seen them yet. So without further ado, my top five-ish movies of 2015!

It Follows

After hearing the premise of It Follows, I was sold on it. Basically, there is a curse going around where if you sleep with someone who is infected you end up getting stalked by a scary-ass demon that slowly walks, and only walks, towards you. If it ever gets to you, it kills you. It can take the form of a scary old people, someone, you know, a child, anything. This movie builds tension throughout and has a few nice jump scares as well. It takes a bit of a tumble near the end when things start playing out differently than I had hoped.

The Babadook

Speaking of movies whose ending didn’t live up to their beginnings, The Babadook was shaping up to be my new favorite horror movie of all time until it took a turn right around the third act that didn’t work for me. I understand the reasoning for it but what The Babadook went on to explore was something I wish would have happened in a different movie. The first half of it had me squirming in my seat more than any other movie this year or maybe even in my life, but the last half fell flat.

The Visit

Alright, I admit, this list is a little horror heavy but like I said I haven’t had a chance to see a lot of my “Best of…” contenders! Perhaps it’s lazy, but I think I judge M. Night Shyamalan’s movies on the quality of their twist; the twist is good, the movie usually is too, and damn did I love the twist in this movie! Along with the twist came great tension building, creepy ass dialogue, and plenty of jump scares! I know Shyamalan’s is a whole lot of miss and not a lot of hits, but he has himself a home run here!

Inside Out

I’m one of those guys who holds all Pixar movies near and dear to his heart, and Inside Out became one of my favorites. I had no idea how a movie that takes place inside the mind was going to work, but it exceeded all my expectations. I was thinking about this movie long after I finished watching it. The character development and writing was unreal! How sweet was Bing Bong!? Everything about it hit the mark for me. Perhaps my only complaint is that LAVA, the short that play in front of it, wasn’t their best offering.

Meru

If you like your movie filled with “oh fuck” moments then Meru is for you. A documentary about a group of climbers who take on the challenge of climbing the technically challenging and dangerous mountain that makes climbing Everest seem like a breeze. The scenery shots in this are gorgeous. Not only does it do a great job of capturing all the majestic landscapes, but it also manages to capture some incredible and subtle character moments too. The characters face a handful of setbacks and have to battle many personal demons throughout the movie, many of which will leave your jaw on the floor. I cringed, I cried and left feeling uplifted and inspired. I can’t recommend this movie enough.

Natalie Kipper

Two things. One: I did not step into a movie theater once in 2015. I tend to prefer to watch movies in the comfort of my own home and if that means that I have to wait longer to view them, so be it. Two: I am not that big on movies in general. I am incredibly picky with what I will watch and it eventually leads to me re-watching older films that I know I like over and over.

I did eventually get a chance to view Disney-Pixar’s Inside Out and I must say, it was genuinely moving. The animation was beautiful as one would expect from the studios involved. The graphics weren’t what kept me watching however; it was the smart script. The writers did such a moving job of making each of the emotions’ actions and dialogue fit them. Their individual effects on Riley during the course of the girl’s life just seemed so real and relatable. It was brilliant. And can we talk about Bing Bong for a moment? Riley’s childhood imaginary friend was far and away my favorite character in the film. His design just spoke of youthful innocence and curiosity and I loved him for it. That is where Inside Out shines: the movie’s universe is at once realistic and fanciful.

Inside Out may have been the only movie I saw this year but I am glad I chose it over countless others. Disney and Pixar succeeded in making the film accessible to every age, with so many layers that every group got something slightly different out of viewing it.

Best Movie of 2015: The Peanuts Movie

In today’s day and age of botched and unfaithful movie adaptions of licensed properties, it’s a pleasure and relief when something like The Peanuts Movie comes along. Released by Blue Sky Studios, the movie follows the life of Charlie Brown as he desperately tries to become a winner in order to impress the little red haired girl. While the movie at times can seem a bit simpler than some of the other Peanuts films, that doesn’t stop the movie from having an uplifting message as well as some beautiful backdrops and animation. If you’ve already filled your quota of watching Star Wars 7, then buy a ticket to The Peanuts Movie and give it a watch. I guarantee that you won’t be disappointed with it.

What was your favourite film of 2015? Be sure to let us know in the comments below!

Briefly: I’ve been itching to re-watch Guillermo Del Toro’s Crimson Peak since the very moment that the credits started rolling during my screening. The film shows off depth and beauty like only a Del Toro picture can, and the film’s unfortunate theatrical marketing had many moviegoers ignore the film as it simply looked like a B-horror film.

It’s not a horror at all, and it’s one of my favourite films of 2015. Jonathan and I talked about the film on Geekscape back in September, and I can’t wait to watch it again when it hits Blu-Ray on February 9th.

I’m a sucker for special features, and the Crimson Peak Blu-Ray won’t disappoint in that department, either. Here are the Blu-Ray exclusive features:

-I Remember Crimson Peak: A series of interviews with director Guillermo del Toro and his standout cast, Mia Wasikowska, Tom Hiddleston and Jessica Chastain.

-A Living Thing: An army of artisans was amassed to construct the Sharpe mansion on North America’s largest soundstage. Witness first-hand and in great detail the construction of Del Toro’s most elaborate set to date.

-A Primer on Gothic Romance: Employing his encyclopedic knowledge and passion for the genre, Guillermo del Toro traces the lineage of Gothic Romance in cinema. Using Crimson Peak as the basis, Del Toro outlines the history of cinematic terror and illuminates the differences between traditional scares and elevated horror.

-Crimson Phantoms: Del Toro’s approach to make-up effects is discussed by award-winning effects house DDT. In this piece, they offer an exclusive look inside their workshop, where they deconstruct the creation of the film’s most disturbing prosthetic effects. The discussion delves into the mythology of these elegant creatures and how Del Toro’s belief in the supernatural informed the design and narrative of the ghosts

-Hand Tailored Gothic: Costume designer Kate Hawley unravels her collaboration with Del Toro and reveals the symbolism constantly at play in the wardrobe’s design.

And the features that will be found on the DVD and Blu-Ray:

-Deleted Scenes

-The Light and Dark of Crimson Peak: Crimson Peak offers a stylized turn of the century with carefully crafted visuals that provide the perfect backdrop for Del Toro’s brand of psychological horror. Follow the phases of production to discover a booming America and a dark and removed England portrayed with a multi-layered sophistication unlike any seen in recent cinema.

-Beware Of Crimson Peak: Tom Hiddleston (Sir Thomas Sharpe) offers a walking tour of the many secret spaces in Allerdale Hall.

-Feature Commentary with co-writer and Director Guillermo Del Toro

Del Toro’s films are always ripe with amazing symbolism, and I cannot wait to hear what he has to say on the film’s commentary track.

Re-watch the Crimson Peak trailer below, and let us know if you’re looking forward to the release!

We we’re all patiently awaiting the release of the theatrical trailer for Batman V Superman to hit the airwaves during Jimmy Kimmel tonight. WELL the film’s official Facebook went and released it ahead of schedule. SO HERE IT IS!

We’re finally getting an idea of what we can expect as far as “plot”. After the synopsis leak from last month, we learned that Lex Luthor may be pitting the two heroes against each other. Now we have it!

The best part of this whole trailer? We’re getting to see Gal Gadot in action as Wonder Woman. I’m honestly more excited to see her performance over the titular characters duking it out.

For more of our thoughts, read new Geekscape writer Matthew Morrell’s opinion piece!

Batman V Superman hit’s theaters March 25, 2016!

Just moments ago, the newest trailer for Zack Snyder’s upcoming Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice was released EARLY to the public. In keeping with the supposed theme of Man of Steel and our most recent Thanksgiving holiday, let us take a moment to consider what we can be both thankful and hopeful for.

First, to get the obvious out of the way, we’re fortunate enough to live in a time when our cinematic wizardry can produce exactly what Superman can do in stunning realism; flight, strength, heat vision, the whole works. Even when compared to the Bryan Singer version not to mention the Richard Donner version, today we really do “believe a man can fly.”

Looking at this trailer, the Nolan-esque cinematography, fight choreography between man and Kryptonian, and the whole spectrum of Superman powers all look pretty spectacular. Furthermore, there is a slight glimmer of playfulness, of levity from Cavill which is exceptionally welcomed change of tone.

Second, Ben Affleck’s Batman has the potential to be the best Dark Knight yet. Confidence is high that at this point even the most incompetent of producers helming BvS are smart enough to take note from Batman and Robin, and say, “It appears that the fans don’t want that,” and then look to the Nolan films and agree, “Fans want more of this.” By the looks of the trailer, they are certainly doubling down on a dark, gritty, karate chop your larynx out Batman. We’re also going to take the, “But Affleck was in Daredevil and that sucked,” argument and bury that dead horse right here.

Suffice to say, with his multiple Academy Awards, Golden Globes, and BAFTA Awards jammed into his utility belt, there is no question that the man knows how to work given the right material. Drawing special attention towards his awards for Best Supporting Actor (Shakespeare in Love, and Hollywoodland) one of Mr. Affleck’s strengths is tying an ensemble cast together. Which leads us to our next Pro…

Wonder Woman is finally on screen to complete the hallowed DC Trinity. In this new trailer, she looks insanely awesome; deflecting a blast from our first look at Zod/Doomsday like it was nothing, Gal Godot  is certainly looking the part. That three figure shot was just hands down killer.

Also, Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor Jr. is shaping up be what can only be described as a crazed or evil Willy Wonka; there’s a manic energy to him that’s almost unnerving. His shifting tone from playful drunk at a party with Bruce and Clark, to belittling prick towards Lois Lane might just work as a billionaire mad scientist.

Speaking of which, as predicted by some, we have our Doomsday courtesy of Lex Luthor playing god. This move may be in character for Lex Luthor, and the look of Doomsday doesn’t look half bad, but there’s still something that just doesn’t sit right.

Now for the hard part; weighing the good against the potential set up for disappointment. It would be ridiculous to set aside all our prejudice and simply accept this trailer for what it is; a tease at a Superman story we haven’t seen before and don’t have a full understanding of yet. Unfortunately, that creeping and uneasy sensation that Superman fans are experiencing right now is difficult to ignore, and here’s why…

This doesn’t feel like Superman. Sure, Man of Steel argues that as a new superhero, Superman needed to learn the lesson not to kill. As stupid as that argument may be, the creators of this franchise are sticking with a Superman who was raised without the sage wisdom and moral guidance of Pa Kent.

One’s gotta ask themselves, is this really the Superman we wanted, or asked for? There’s an infamous video of Kevin Smith and his experience with Producers and their understanding of Superman as “savage killer.” But that was supposed to be a joke, right? Or is a neck snapping, city destroying, psychopath the version of Superman Zack Snyder and his super friends think we deserve? Either way, the bitter after taste left in some fans mouths is still sticking around and it’s uncertain if a rinsing of Bat-Listerine will wash that out of fans collective psyches.

Certainly, the spectacle of the film looks impressive. But, when we get a trailer that still highlights a scowling, (prisoner taking?), and face melting Superman as part of it’s sizzle reel, how excited can we get for a Superman that still doesn’t feel like Superman?

I’ve read, played, and watched my Superman: Red Son, and Injustice: God’s Among Us, and Superman: The Animated Series episode “Legacy part I and II;” there is definitely an aspect of fun and curiosity in seeing Superman as a villain. However, I’d argue that fun comes from a place of understanding who the real Superman is; an incorruptible, all powerful force for good.

I’d like to have hope that maybe this film will turn the image of Man of Steel towards the character we’ve known and grew up with, and maybe that hope will pay off. We’ve certainly waited long enough for an adaptation of the three most iconic superheroes to be done some justice.

In the meantime, I’m going to re-watch Max Landis’ pitch for a real Superman film; maybe not the sequel we deserve, but the Superman movie we need.

Jim Carrey’s serious films can be hit or miss, but when they hit we get amazing performances like The Truman Show.

His upcoming thriller, True Crimes, is based off an article from the New Yorker printed in 2008 about a Polish author who wrote a book about a murder, and was tried for a very similar murder committed four years after publishing.

Principle filming began in Poland just a few weeks ago, and we got ourselves the first set photos. Carrey is looking pretty grizzled with that beard, and is rocking a very thin slender physique. Along side Carrey, the film stars Agata Kulesza, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Aki Kaurismäki, Kati Outinen, Zbigniew Zamachowski, and Marton Csokas.

Check out the photos below!

True Crimes is set to hit theaters sometime 2016!

Whoa. On Tuesday, December 8th Marvel teams up with Amazon on an exclusive offering to knock your Captain America socks clean off! The Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase Two collection drops only on Amazon with all new bonus content, film replicas and more. In addition, each film features custom disc sleeves from artist Matt Ferguson.

Geekscape got a sneak peek at these alternate covers to share with you—and they’re freaking awesome. Go ahead feast your eyes and start squirreling away your pennies!

This collection is not messing around—it doesn’t seem like this is going to be the “pretty good one,” only to be replaced next year by the “super awesome edition.” This collection already has all the goods I look for in my film collecting proclivities—and then a little more! I ended up buying a 3D TV several Black Fridays ago when it was the same price as the standard model and I’ve been enjoying it ever since. As a result, if a movie I want comes out on Blu-ray and there’s a 3D version—that’s the one I buy. That and so much more is already baked into this collection! In their own words:

The limited edition, 13-Disc Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase Two Collection invites you to hold the greatest power in the cosmos in your grasp – an orb containing one of the legendary Infinity Stones! Plus Blu-ray 3D™, Blu-ray™ and Digital Copies of all Phase 2 films, in collectible packaging designed by artist Matt Ferguson. This set overflows with stunning Marvel memorabilia, including a gold-foiled page from the book of Dark Elves, an ancient drawing from the Morag vault, Avengers and S.T.R.I.K.E. uniform patches, a replica of the Tony Stark Tattoo from Marvel’s Iron Man 3, and much more!

I mean, come on!—there’s a freakin’ ancient drawing from the Morag vault! What more can you possibly ask for?!

Personally, there were some moments I didn’t fully connect with in this film collection—but honestly, I take the blame on those for the time being. Maybe I was in the wrong mood when I saw them or something—planning to give Iron Man 3Thor: The Dark World and Avengers: Age of Ultron further viewings before making my final call on them. (Especially after getting a better understanding of what went into this intricate web Marvel is weaving as best they can during this release event.) However, here’s the thing—even if every film isn’t up to the snuff of say, Guardians of the Galaxy, they’re still better than most other offerings in their genre; meaning—you can’t lose, even if you lose, with these films. You will be properly entertained come hell or high water!

This unveiling comes properly on the heels of the release of the premiere trailer for the first film in Phase Three, Captain America: Civil War, this week. Whoowhee!—that trailer’s some dramatic adrenaline right there.

And now, my lovelies, because these are just the sort of details I hunt down when considering investing in a collection to add to my. . . collection, here are all the technical details they’ve provided us at this time:

  • Marvel’s Iron Man 3 (Blu-ray 3D + Blu-ray + Digital Copy)

Holy cow! What a day so far. Activision Blizzard announces they’re starting a film and TV studio, and now this! We had the teaser for the Warcraft movie earlier this week, but now the full monty is here! Check out the trailer below.

The peaceful realm of Azeroth stands on the brink of war as its civilization faces a fearsome race of invaders: Orc warriors fleeing their dying home to colonize another. As a portal opens to connect the two worlds, one army faces destruction and the other faces extinction. From opposing sides, two heroes are set on a collision course that will decide the fate of their family, their people and their home.

I’ll be honest, I was more hyped when I saw the teaser trailer a few days ago. This makes me believe that this will just be a generic fantasy story set infront of pretty green screens. Well I’m gonna hafta wait to find out!

Warcraft hits theaters June 10 2016!

Blizzcon is popping off right now, and the first HUGE announcement out of the convention is a doozy. Not content being the forerunner for console gaming, PC gaming and now Mobile gaming, they want to move into the production of film and TV!

Activision-Blizzard Studios is going to focus on bringing the company’s countless award winning franchises to life. Ex Disney executive Nick van Dyke has been announced as the co head of the new division, along side a yet unnamed executive.

The studios first property is going to be a TV series based off the popular toys to life franchise, Skylanders. Skylanders Academy has an incredible cast attached. Justin Long, Ashley Tisdale, Jonathan Banks, Norm Macdonald, Harland Williams and Richard Horvitz.

They also have announced a Call of Duty film series, but no information past that has been released.

Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick was quoted as saying:

Activision Blizzard is home to some of the most successful entertainment franchises in history, across any medium. With the launch of Activision Blizzard Studios, our engaged fans can now watch the games they love come to life across film and television. Activision Blizzard Studios is yet another way we’re celebrating our players and fans, and we expect that our film and television productions will entertain and delight whole new audiences, as well. I’m excited that Nick and his team will be leading this important new growth opportunity for Activision Blizzard.

EX Disney executive Nick van Dyke, whom was heavily involved with the acquisitions of Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm, was quoted as saying:

Activision Blizzard Studios has the unique advantage of starting with a library of world-class intellectual property that includes some of the largest franchises which have not yet been developed in film and television. Our library spans more than 30 years of global entertainment culture and, in the last 12 months alone, fans of Activision Blizzard properties have played and watched our games online for more than 13 billion hours. This gives us a huge, passionate and deeply-engaged audience that is hungry for more great content built from the universes they already know and love-and which are extremely broad in their appeal.

Activision Blizzard Studios is not just an exciting new business for our company, it is a synergistic complement to our core business. Our movies and shows will benefit from the remarkable IP created in our games and will further increase the awareness of, engagement with and passion for our franchises.

This isn’t the first time a video game studio has branched into film. Most recently Ubisoft created Ubisoft Motion Pictures and has brought their Rabbids character to TV and are currently producing the Assassin’s Creed Movie starring Michael Fassbender.

This news is potentially something that will make Activision Blizzard and unstoppable juggernaut. With the Blizzard IP’s ALONE garnering an incredible amount of praise and desire from fans for film adaptations. Who WOULDN’T want to see a Diablo or Starcraft movie?

Quentin Tarantino’s eighth theatrical release is almost upon us, and the folks over at the Weinstein Company have just released the official trailer. It oozes with style, energy and an aesthetic that has me excited as hell. Check out The Hateful Eight below!

https://youtu.be/6_UI1GzaWv0

In THE HATEFUL EIGHT, set six or eight or twelve years after the Civil War, a stagecoach hurtles through the wintry Wyoming landscape. The passengers, bounty hunter John Ruth (Russell) and his fugitive Daisy Domergue (Leigh), race towards the town of Red Rock where Ruth, known in these parts as “The Hangman,” will bring Domergue to justice. Along the road, they encounter two strangers: Major Marquis Warren (Jackson), a black former union soldier turned infamous bounty hunter, and Chris Mannix (Goggins), a southern renegade who claims to be the town’s new Sheriff. Losing their lead on the blizzard, Ruth, Domergue, Warren and Mannix seek refuge at Minnie’s Haberdashery, a stagecoach stopover on a mountain pass. When they arrive at Minnie’s, they are greeted not by the proprietor but by four unfamiliar faces. Bob (Bichir), who’s taking care of Minnie’s while she’s visiting her mother, is holed up with Oswaldo Mobray (Roth), the hangman of Red Rock, cow-puncher Joe Gage (Madsen), and Confederate General Sanford Smithers (Dern). As the storm overtakes the mountainside stopover, our eight travelers come to learn they may not make it to Red Rock after all…

The Hateful Eight hit’s select theaters Christmas day, and you can catch it EVERYWHERE January 8th 2016!

Arnold Schwarzenegger has just signed on to star in upcoming revenge drama 478, from Darren Aronofsky’s studio Protozoa Pictures.

Recently announced from Deadline478 has Schwarzenegger taking up the role of a father who loses his wife and daughter in a plane crash that was caused by the negligence of an air traffic controller. Shortly after, the air traffic controller is exonerated for the accident and moved into protective custody. Not satisfied with getting of scott-free, Schwarzenegger goes for revenge on the man responsible for the accident.

The script promises to be “more sophisticated than an average revenge film, and gives Schwarzenegger a chance to show the chops he displayed on Maggie”.

It will be a nice change of pace for the Austrian actor to see him in what sounds like will be a slow methodical take on your standard revenge film. It’s always refreshing to see capable actors step outside their normal fair.

Production on 478 starts in December. So far only Arnold has signed on to star in the film. It is being written by Javier Guillon  and will be directed by Elliot Lester.

No release date has been announced.

Our friends over at CBM have just reported on a possible plot/synopsis leak for the upcoming Batman V. Superman.

Apparently Odeon Cinemas, a movie theater chain in the UK, had put up a new description for the March 2016 release. At the time of this writing Odeon has taken down the page.

At long last, see Batman and Superman square off against each other in ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice’, an epic superhero showdown which will change both their lives forever.

Clark Kent doesn’t trust Gotham’s mysterious masked vigilante. Bruce Wayne doesn’t trust the alien who nearly destroyed Metropolis. And Lex Luthor, who hates Superman more than anyone, is manipulating both of them for his own twisted ends.

Choose your side: the Man of Steel or the Dark Knight? Learn the answer to the age-old question – who would win? – in ‘Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice’.

If this is accurate, and an official synopsis from the studio, then this sheds a whole new light on Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor.

The SDCC trailer has given us a broad idea of what the direction of the film will be like. Batman thinks Superman is a menace and needs to be stopped, but if what Odeon Cinemas has posted if official, then it makes Luthor’s involvement much more important.

Today is a good day for Harry Potter fans. After the lackluster announcement yesterday, showing off the new films logo, we’ve got something of value TODAY! The cover of Entertainment Weekly is all about the Harry Potter prequel, Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them. Check out the gallery below!

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ will star Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, Dan Fogler, Colin Farrell, Jenn Murray, Jon Voight, Carmen Ejogo, Gemma Chan and newcomer Faith Wood-Blagrove. The films is set to be directed by David Yates and the film follows Newt Scamander (Redmayne), the Wizarding World’s preeminent magizoologist, who in his travels has encountered and documented a myriad of magical creatures, ultimately leading to his penning the Hogwarts School textbook “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”

The Potter Prequel hits theaters November 18th 2016!

Briefly: Katniss Everdeen’s epic story is now less than a month away from its conclusion, and following the final trailer a few weeks back, Lionsgate has just debuted an action-packed new TV spot for the beyond-anticipated film.

As disappointed as I was in the first film in the series, I loved every second of Catching Fire, and though I enjoyed what I saw in Mockingjay‘s first chapter, the film felt (understandably) like an incomplete story.  As such, I can’t wait to see where things go, as I haven’t read a single word of the series of novels.

Take a look at the spot below, and let us know what you think! The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 hits theatres on November 20th!
