There you go! Again, be sure to let us know what you thought of the ceremony in the comments below.

Birdman

Briefly: Zack Snyder just revealed what Aquaman will look like in (probably) Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, or definitely in the 2018 Aquaman standalone film.

He looks freaking cool (at least in my opinion), and is complete with radical tattoos and a bad-ass trident.

The divisive director took to twitter to reveal the image, stating that “There is only one true King,” and using the hashtag #UniteTheSeven. Take a look at the image below, and let us know what you think. We’ll be sure to share more Aquaman news as soon as it drops!

And here’s a larger version:

B-RAWTjCcAAF81b.jpg-large

So, how do you think the costume looks? Sound out below!

Briefly: Don’t you guys dig Kenny Craig? He’s been a part of Geekscape since way back when we were part of the Toadhop Network, and when we left we loved him so much that we took him with us. Now, you can hear Kenny chat with Ben and our fearless leader (plus guests) every week on TRadioV.

If you like what the man has to say (and who doesn’t), you can also watch him stream on twitch pretty much all the time. He’s super active, has fantastic interaction with his viewers, and often hosts rad giveaways as well!

Currently, Kenny’s playing through Techland’s Dying Light, which I (Derek) fell in love with back in January and have had a hard time putting down ever since (check out my written review right here). We’ll be uploading highlights of his streams to the GeekscapeTV YouTube channel (where you’ll also find Paul London:Hero of the Prophecy, Hollywood Viceand much more), so take a look at Part 1 of Kenny’s Dying Light walkthrough below, and  keep an eye out for many more Wheelchair Walkthroughs in the future!

Briefly: I’ve been stoked for this one since its announcement, and checking out the first 25 minutes of the game certainly doesn’t help the long, long wait until it releases tomorrow.

It’s The Order: 1886 of course, the new IP from the folks over at Ready at Dawn, and it’s the PS4’s latest breathtaking exclusive. The game “introduces players to a unique vision of Victorian-Era London where Man uses advanced technology to battle a powerful and ancient foe.  As Galahad, a member of an elite order of Knights, join a centuries-old war against a powerful threat that will determine the course of history forever in this intense third-person action-adventure shooter.”

The Order: 1886 is said to be heavily story-driven, and as this is a worth that I’m extremely interested in learning about, I really can’t wait to get my hands on it. Take a look at the first 25 minutes below, and let us know if you’ll be picking this one up!

http://youtu.be/_CR48h81o5Q

Briefly: We still don’t know if we’ll ever get a chance to play it, but Pokkén Tournament sure looks to be shaping up nicely.

A new trailer for the game debuted at this year’s Japan Amusement Expo, and while it reveals no new characters (and few other surprises), the 60FPS video offers a gorgeous look at the upcoming fighter.

Take a look at the trailer below, and let us know what you think. Currently, Pokkén Tournaments is confirmed only for Japanses arcades. Don’t you miss arcades?

Briefly: Bates Motel is almost back (FINALLY), and I couldn’t be more excited. A&E has just debuted a new trailer for the upcoming episodes, and it’s pretty clear from the footage that Norman is definitely becoming the psycho we’ve all been waiting to see.

This season, “After a blissful summer of closeness with his mother, living within the safe confines of home and the Bates Motel, Norman’s fears about what really happened with Blaire Watson resurface and Norma questions what really happened. Forced to look at the truths about Norman for the first time, their deeply intricate relationship continues to evolve. Norma finds herself turning to the other man in her life, Norman’s half-brother, Dylan (Max Thieriot) and begins to rely on him in ways that she never expected. This relationship inevitably triggers jealousy in Norman and a new kind of love triangle between Norma and her two sons erupts. Estranged brother and uncle, Caleb (Kenny Johnson) returns to haunt the family throughout the season challenging the family bond even further. Pressures of the outside world take a hold of the family when newcomers Kevin Rahm (“Mad Men,” “Desperate Housewives”), Tracy Spiradakos (“Revolution”) and Ryan Hurst (“Sons of Anarchy”) arrive at White Pine Bay. After a summer of living at the Bates Motel, Sheriff Romero (Nestor Carbonell) and Norma have grown closer but there will always have that troubling question mark surrounding Norman. Something doesn’t feel right, but spite of his instincts, Romero finds himself continually drawn back to the Bates family — and to Norma. Emma (Olivia Cooke) also determined to find out what is happening to Norman becomes more emboldened, fearless, goes after the things she wants. Familiar face, Bradley (Nicola Peltz) returns to surprise the family and digs up old memories.”

Bates Motel will premiere on March 9th! Take a look at the trailer below, and let us know if you’re looking forward to the new season!

Damn creepy, right?

Briefly: The world is in desperate need of another great Alien film (especially after last year’s INCREDIBLE Alien: Isolation video game made everyone, or at least me, interested in the franchise again), and it looks as though District 9 creator Neill Blomkamp may be the man to give it to us.

It’s well known that the director was working on an Alien project at some point, as he revealed a batch of incredible concept art for the film earlier this year, at the time stating “Was working on this. Don’t think I am anymore. Love it though. #alien #xenomorph”.

Oh shit

A photo posted by Brownsnout (@neillblomkamp) on

Now, Blomkamp’s much-better-than-Elysium looking next film, Chappie, is just about to hit theatres, and the director just revealed that he’s back in bed with the Xenomorph. Take a look:

Um… So I think it’s officially my next film. #alien A photo posted by Brownsnout (@neillblomkamp) on

TheWrap was apparently able to confirm the news, and states that Blomkamp “has signed on to direct an untitled movie set in the “Alien” universe that will take place after “Prometheus 2″ for 20th Century Fox.”

Now, we’re pretty damned excited. Blomkamp is a visually spectacular director, and as long as his Alien project comes out more District 9 than Elysium, we’re confident that we’re in extremely good hands. That being said, (in my opinion) Elysium was still way better than Prometheus AND Alien: Resurrection, so I’m beyond stoked to see what Blomkamp has in store for us, especially after that incredible concept art.

Neill Blomkamp’s Chappie hits theatres on March 6th, and we’ll be sure to share any Alien news as it comes in! Are you down for a Blomkamp directed Alien film? Sound out below!

Briefly: Hankering for more Doug Jones after rewatching the sizzle reel for Geekscape’s own Paul London: Hero of the Prophecy, in which Jones plays the terrible, evil wizard searching for the all powerful ‘Artifact’? Wait, you have seen Hero of the Prophecy, right?

Doug has just revealed that he’ll be returning to the DC Universe (he played the Thin Clown in 1992’s Batman Returns), this time portraying Deathbolt on The CW’s Arrow.

Name doesn’t ring a bell? Yeah, I couldn’t recall it either. The character first appeared back in 1983 (seven long years before I was born), and according to the DC Wikia, his “body functions as a living electromagnetic battery. He can absorb, channel, and redirect electricity for offensive attack.” In Arrow, the character will “be a metahuman with the ability to harness and weaponize plasma energy.”

We love ourselves some Doug Jones, and we can’t wait for this episode. Doug will appear in this season’s nineteenth episode, which is called ‘Broken Arrow’. Oooh, ominous.

Briefly: We’re all huge fans of everything Studio Ghibli here at Geekscape, so we’re beyond excited to be bringing all you ‘Scapists a giveaway for the studio’s latest critically acclaimed film, which will also be up for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature this coming weekend.

You’ve heard all about this gorgeous feature, haven’t you? If not, check out the trailer below, and keep reading to find out how you can win a copy for yourself:

http://youtu.be/tM6hcHp0_kU

Yeah, we know. That’s some insane art, right? The film is currently sitting at 100% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes (with nearly 60 reviews), so that’s clearly not the only thing its got going for it.

The Tale of Princess Kaguya stars Chloe Grace Moretz, James, Caan, Mary Steenburgen, Darren Criss, Lucy Lui, James Marsden, and more, and is available on DVD and Blu-Ray RIGHT NOW. The release also contains some pretty radical special features which I’ve listen below:

– “Isao Takahata and His Tale of The Princess Kaguya” – 86-minute documentary on the making of The Tale of The Princess Kaguya
– Announcement of the Completion of the Film
– Japanese Trailers and TV Spots
– US Trailers

I’m really looking forward to checking out that documentary.

Now, onto the good stuff. How to win a copy for yourself! It’s pretty freakin’ easy, so here’s what you need to do:

– Like Geekscape on Facebook
– Share this photo on your Facebook wall, AND comment, letting us know your favourite Studio Ghibli Project and why.
– Reside in the United States

That’s it! The contest will close next Monday, and we’ll be in touch with the winner! Get sharing! And if you don’t win, you can pick up The Tale of Princess Kaguya from Amazon!

TaleOfThePrincessKaguya_BD_ORing_3D_ProdSht

Briefly: I had no idea that this existed until its first trailer dropped a few weeks back, but since then I’ve been insanely excited for Netflix’s own Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

The show comes from 30 Rock executive producers Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, and its a “new comedy series starring Ellie Kemper (“The Office,” “Bridesmaids”) as a woman who is rescued from a doomsday cult and starts life over as a nanny for an Upper East Side socialite (Jane Krakowski from “30 Rock”) in New York City. Armed with just a backpack, light-up sneakers and a couple way-past-due library books, she takes on a world she didn’t think even existed anymore.”

It looks hilarious, and it looks freaking adorable. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt just got a new poster, so take a look below, and let us know if you’ll be binging this one when it releases on March 6th.

Kimmy

The world went wild a few weeks back when the cast for Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters reboot was revealed. Wild, as in, showered Feig, the cast, and the idea with boatloads of praise… and buttloads of hate. I try to reserve judgement until I actually see a finished product, but what do I know anyways?

In any case, NEW Ghostbuster Leslie Jones has uploaded a few photos from Sunday night’s SNL40 after party. One of the pics showcases the actress with Ghostbusters co-stars Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, and Kate McKinnon. They’re definitely in party mode and not Ghostbusting mode, but it’s pretty interesting in any case.

Take a look at the photo below, and let us know if you’re looking forward to the film. Ghostbusters hits theatres on July 22nd, 2016!

Briefly: During an investor’s call earlier today, the big N revealed its list of the most popular Amiibo figures to date. There are really no surprises to be found here, and only the common figures even made the list (probably because there are a ton of people who have never even seen certain figures in real life). Of course, our buddy Link was the most popular character, and Mario himself was right behind him. Here’s the whole list:

Link
Mario
Pikachu
Kirby
Samus
Yoshi
Zelda
Donkey Kong
Peach
Luigi

Nice to see that Luigi made the list (though he was last of the top 10), though I wonder if that would be the case if all of the figures were readily available. Interestingly enough, Nintendo noted that 63 percent of Amiibo sales have been from North America, which may explain the photos of fully-stocked Amiibo shelves from everywhere else in the world. Europe sits at 23 percent, Japan at 11, and just 3 percent for Australia.

Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata also revealed that in the near future Amiibo figures will unlock timed trials of Wii U Virtual Console games, and that those Amiibo cards that were rumoured a few months back are still in the works.

I don’t know about you guys, but I’m addicted to the damned things… I own the complete top 10, and a whole lot more. Which figures are you still hunting for? Are you down with the Amiibo Cards? Sound out below!

Briefly: It was just yesterday that Ryan Reynolds reminded us that Deadpool is now just one year away, and today the film added a female lead.

Haywire and Fast and Furious 6 actress Gina Carano has joined the project as Angel Dust. In the source material, the character is a member of the Morlocks, but its unknown what sort of role she’ll play in the film.

Apparently, as noted by THRX-Men’s Colossus will also appear in the film.

Did you catch that prototype mask yesterday? Do you think Carano is a good fit for Angel Dust? Will you be lining up for this next February? Sound out below!

Briefly: Ready At Dawn’s Until Dawn was originally slated to hit the PS3 (with some good ol’ Playstation Move support), but was re-announced as a PS4 exclusive this past Summer.

The game totally plays like a B-grade horror film, and I’m so excited for it. I’m a big fan of survival horror games (which you’d know if you listened to the Geekscape Games podcast), and I’m super happy to see the resurgence of horror titles that’s happening now (and looks as though it will continue for some time).

Sony today debuted a new ‘Valentine’s Day’ trailer for the game, which feature’s the game’s characters gettin’ romantic before… well, gettin’ dead. The game still looks a little rough around the edges (especially considering that it runs on the Killzone: Shadowfall engine), but I’m sure things will get cleaned up before it launches later in 2015.

Take a look at the trailer below, and let us know if you’re excited!

Eight friends trapped together on a remote mountain retreat, and they aren’t alone. Gripped by dread, with tensions running high, they must fight through their fear if they all hope to make through the night in one piece.

Play as each of the eight characters and experience fear like you never have before. Every decision you make in your terrifying search for answers could mean the difference between life and death, but for whom? Your actions alone will decide who survives Until Dawn.

Briefly: Robert Kirkman’s latest ongoing series, Outcast, was headed to television long before its first issue ever debuted, and today Cinemax officially ordered the project to series.

The show’s debut season will contain 10 episodes, with a pilot directed by You’re Next director Adam Wingard.

Outcast focuses on Kyle Barnes, a man who has been plagued by possession for his entire life, and begins a journey to discover why. Kyle will be portrayed by Gone Girl actor Patrick Fugit. Expanded cast includes Philip Glenister as Reverend Anderson, a hard drinking, hard gambling West Virginian evangelical preacher who believes he’s a soldier in God’s holy war against evil, and Gabriel Bateman as Joshua Austin, a young boy who lives across town who appears to be possessed by a demon and has a mysterious connection to Kyle.

The project is still without a release date, but we’ll be sure to let you know as soon as we know more!

Have you been keeping up with Outcast? What are your thoughts on the series so far? Are you looking forward to the adaptation? Sound out below!

Briefly: It was just a few weeks back when we learned that Deadpool would begin Filming in Vancouver this March, and today star Ryan Reynolds reminded us that the film is just one year away from today.. and he also gave us an early look at the prototype mask. Take a look below:

Now, no further casting has been revealed, and we certainly don’t know what the movie’s about, but we’re pretty danged excited. Bask in the glory of the test reel (again) below, and be sure to let us know if you’re excited! Deadpool hits theatres on February 12, 2016!

Briefly: Turtle Rock Studios long awaited Left 4 Dead follow-up, Evolve, finally hits store shelves today, and 2K games has debuted both the launch trailer and opening cinematic for the award-winning title.

In the game, A player-controlled monster must evade a team of four uniquely-skilled playable hunters. You can evolve and overpower as the monster, or team up and out number as the hunters, and it looks like an absolute blast.

Jake had an opportunity to give his thoughts on the game back at SDCC, and I’d be more than willing to bet he’s playing right now. Take a look at both videos below, and let us know if you’re playing as the Hunters or the Monster.

Briefly: We’re still reeling over last night’s news that Spider-Man will officially appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Marvel has now clarified just how the web-head will affect its upcoming slate of films (or at least when we’ll be seeing them).

The new Spider-Man film will launch on July 28th, 2017. To make room for Marvel’s new pal, Thor: Ragnarok has been pushed to Black Panther‘s original release date on November 3rd, 2017, while Black Panther will now drop on July 6th, 2018.

The domino effect continues, and with Black Panther‘s move, Captain Marvel will now release on Inhumans’ November 2nd, 2018 date, and Inhumans will launch on July 12th, 2019.

Interestingly enough, both of the Avengers: Infinity War dates have not changed, and will still release on May 4th, 2018, and May 3rd, 2019 respectively.

Here’s the full list of Marvel’s currently slated projects:

– Avengers: Age of Ultron: May 1st, 2015
– Ant-Man: July 17th, 2015
– Captain America: Civil War: May 6th, 2016
– Doctor Strange: November 4th, 2016
– Guardians of the Galaxy 2: May 5th, 2017
– Spider-Man: July 28th, 2017
– Thor: Ragnarok: November 3rd, 2017
– Avengers: Infinity War, Part 1: May 4th, 2018
– Black Panther: July 6th, 2018
– Captain Marvel: November 2nd, 2018
– Avengers: Infinity War, Part 2: May 3rd, 2019
– Inhumans: July 12th, 2019

Are you excited to see Spider-Man make his MCU debut? Do you see another origin story coming, or will they realize that we’ve seen Uncle Ben die enough times by now? Sound out below!

Spider

So, it’s been rumoured for what seems like forever (or at least since the Sony hack occurred late last year), but Marvel has just made it official: Spider-Man will appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

And that’s not all that’s happening. Marvel (and of course Kevin Feige and Amy Pascal) will co-produce Sony’s next Spider-Man film (though Sony will continue to finance, distribute, own, and have created control over the franchise).

The press release also notes that “the new Spider-Man will first appear in a Marvel film”. Hmm, ‘the new Spider-Man’? Does that mean that we’re done with Andrew Garfield? Can #DonaldforSpiderMan make a comeback? Does that mean another reboot is happening? Maybe we’re reading too far into it, but it’s certainly some interesting wording.

It’s also noted that MCU characters may appear in future Spider-Man films.

I’m excited for the prospect. After two less than stellar The Amazing Spider-Man films, having Marvel involved with the franchise can only be a good thing. I definitely agree with Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment Michael Lynton, who stated that “This is the right decision for the franchise, for our business, for Marvel, and for the fans.”

Take a look at the full press release below, and let us know if you’re happy about the news!

Under the deal, the new Spider-Man will first appear in a Marvel film from Marvel’s Cinematic Universe (MCU). Sony Pictures will thereafter release the next installment of its $4 billion Spider-Man franchise, on July 28, 2017, in a film that will be co-produced by Kevin Feige and his expert team at Marvel and Amy Pascal, who oversaw the franchise launch for the studio 13 years ago. Together, they will collaborate on a new creative direction for the web slinger. Sony Pictures will continue to finance, distribute, own and have final creative control of the Spider-Man films.

Marvel and Sony Pictures are also exploring opportunities to integrate characters from the MCU into future Spider-Man films.

The new relationship follows a decade of speculation among fans about whether Spider-Man – who has always been an integral and important part of the larger Marvel Universe in the comic books – could become part of the Marvel Universe on the big screen. Spider-Man has more than 50 years of history in Marvel’s world, and with this deal, fans will be able to experience Spider-Man taking his rightful place among other Super Heroes in the MCU.

Bob Iger, Chairman and CEO, The Walt Disney Company said: “Spider-Man is one of Marvel’s great characters, beloved around the world. We’re thrilled to work with Sony Pictures to bring the iconic web-slinger into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which opens up fantastic new opportunities for storytelling and franchise building.”

“We always want to collaborate with the best and most successful filmmakers to grow our franchises and develop our characters. Marvel, Kevin Feige and Amy, who helped orchestrate this deal, are the perfect team to help produce the next chapter of Spider-Man,” said Michael Lynton, Chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment. “This is the right decision for the franchise, for our business, for Marvel, and for the fans.”

“Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios share a love for the characters in the Spider-Man universe and have a long, successful history of working together. This new level of collaboration is the perfect way to take Peter Parker’s story into the future,” added Doug Belgrad, president, Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group.

“I am thrilled to team with my friends at Sony Pictures along with Amy Pascal to produce the next Spider-Man movie,” said Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. “Amy has been deeply involved in the realization on film of one of the world’s most beloved characters. Marvel’s involvement will hopefully deliver the creative continuity and authenticity that fans demand from the MCU. I am equally excited for the opportunity to have Spider-Man appear in the MCU, something which both we at Marvel, and fans alike, have been looking forward to for years.”

Spider-Man, embraced all over the world, is the most successful franchise in the history of Sony Pictures, with the five films having taken in more than $4 billion worldwide.

Briefly: We were beyond excited for Capcom’s Resident Evil HD Remaster to finally hit digital store shelves, and apparently everyone else was too, as the game has become Capcom’s fastest selling digital title in history, and the January 20th release has also broken the record for the biggest selling day one digital title on the PlayStation Network.

That’s pretty freaking ridiculous for what basically amounts to a 20 year old game.

Capcom’s Producer on the title, Yoshiaki Hirabyashi, commented “It’s been great to see so many positive comments from fans that have enjoyed this new release. The team here at Capcom Japan have worked hard to bring the game to the latest generation of consoles and we are thrilled at this news on its performance.”

I’ve had the game sitting on my PS4’s hard drive for weeks now, and I can’t wait to jump in as soon as I have a chance. Have you played the remaster yet? Does the game still hold up after all these years? Sound out below!

Briefly: Every so often, moviegoers need to be reminded to shut the hell up and turn your cell phone off when they’re at the movies.

Today’s reminder comes from Luke Skywalker and The Joker himself, Mark Hamill. It was simply too fantastic not to share. Also, heed his warning, or bad things could happen.

Briefly: Neill Blomkamp’s Chappie is finally just a few weeks away, and Sony today debuted two new TV spots for the anticipated film.

I’m beyond excited for the film, and at this point it looks more like District 9 than Elysium, which can only be good for the full feature. Not familiar with the film? Here’s the synopsis:

Every child comes into the world full of promise, and none more so than Chappie: he is gifted, special, a prodigy. Like any child, Chappie will come under the influence of his surroundings – some good, some bad – and he will rely on his heart and soul to find his way in the world and become his own man. But there’s one thing that makes Chappie different from anyone else: he is a robot. The first robot with the ability to think and feel for himself. His life, his story, will change the way the world looks at robots and humans forever.

You can take a look at the new spots below (and check out the latest trailer here if you missed it), and be sure to let us know what you think! Chappie hits theatres on March 6th!

Briefly: Fatal Frame fans, have you given up hope for The Black Haired Shrine Maiden ever coming to North America?

Maybe you shouldn’t have, as Devil’s Third creator Tomonobu Itagaki has certainly just raised my excitement for the possibility of the title coming to the west. Here’s what he said on his FaceBook page:

“Hey guys, I strongly believe that Kikuchi Keisuke will release the Fatal Frame V in America, in many countries. He and me have same philosophy from Tecmo days. That’s what I can say for now. I want you guys to read between the lines. Anyway I will play this game.”

Of course, he could be totally wrong, but I’ll hold onto any shred of hope that I’ll get to play another game in this amazing series.

Have you been a fan of the Fatal Frame series thus far? Did you get a chance to play the Wii version? Sound out below!

Note: For expanded discussion on the first episode of Life is Strange, be sure to check out the first Geekscape Games Bonus Stage, in which Josh, Juan, Shane, and I discuss the episode and our thoughts at length. It’s also filled with spoilers (though the below review is as spoiler free as possible to a point that it sounds like I barely played it).

Life is Strange is a title that remained under my radar for far too long. Shane posted the game’s reveal trailer back in December… which I proceeded to not watch, and even mentioned how excited he was for the release a month or so back on Geekscape Games. It wasn’t until the game launched and I saw droves of FaceBook and Twitter comments (both positive and negative) about the title that I decided it was something that I needed to experience.

I’m so, so glad that I did.

Life is Strange tells the story of Maxine Caulfield, an 18 year old private school student who we’ll learn a ton about during the episode’s 2-3 hour runtime. The title is a graphical adventure game, akin to the phenomenal titles that our beloved Telltale Games develops, but at the same time so much different. See, while Telltale’s titles regularly deal with survival, zombies, fairy tales, vault hunters, songs of ice and fire, and life or death decisions, Life is Strange explores a theme that we as players have all explored, but Telltale is yet to: growing up.

Strange1

We first meet Maxine (Max for short) amidst what looks like a world-ending storm (that tornado though), which quickly reveals itself to be an in-class daydream. After exploring the room, which can take quite some time as DONTNOD has demonstrated some fantastic attention to detail here (it feels as though almost every object in the game is interactive), an extreme event in the school’s women’s room leads to Max discovering that she can actually rewind time. This surprisingly unique mechanic really changes the feel of the game, as every decision that you make… is now re-makeable. Whereas in a game like The Walking Dead, the decisions are so hard because they’re irreversible and permanent, the choices in Life is Strange surprisingly feel just as tough, since you now have the ability to see the outcome of each decision you make before deciding which option to take.

The ability to rewind the game and change the decisions that you make have lead to some of the most self-reflective moments that I’ve had in a video game. Maxine has the power to do something that all of us have wanted to countless times in our lives: change the outcome of our decisions. A myriad of times throughout this short experience I thought back to the many, many times I wished that I could change a situation that I had created, and in-game I found myself sitting for far too long on these hard choices, weighing each outcome for an eternity before finally solidifying an action. Another great aspect here is that, while Life is Strange makes you reflect back on your own life (and it will), it also makes you reflect on the consequences (good or bad) of those decisions that you’ve thought back on;  you likely wouldn’t be anywhere near where you are now had you made any of these decisions differently. Max’s decisions all have (what I imagine to be) vastly different outcomes on the game and on the interactions that she has with those around her (so that’s what the game’s ever prominent butterfly was telling me). It’s hard. It’s awesome. It’s a quirky, independent coming of age film that’s been made into a video game instead, and I totally love it.

Strange2

The game’s presentation is absolutely stellar, especially considering the title’s price tag. The visuals won’t compare to a AAA game, but they’re stylish and notable across the board in a way that makes me think that DONTNOD doesn’t want them to, from every character model, to the schoolyard and dorms and beyond. Animation and framerate is smooth in a way that Telltale wishes their games could be (not a burn, I do love my Telltale titles), and the game’s simple and unobtrusive ‘notepad sketch’ UI is one that I hope more games will draw from. Even better than the game’s visuals is the audio in Life is Strange; be warned about the unexpected, scary-as-hell thunderclap that opens the title (which almost had me throw my headset across the room), but beyond that turn the volume up and revel in the praiseworthy voice acting (on all counts) and ‘you’ll want to Shazam this music’. Again, the presentation of Life is Strange is commendable, aside from the fact that the game has the worst lip syncing this side of Fallout 3. I really have no idea how it could be so bad when the rest of the game is so polished and presentable, but it’s really a small blemish in an otherwise beautiful experience.

Max’s journey is also one that very much depends on the type of gamer playing it. It’s an extremely accessible title, and one that I think even non-gaming spouses, co-workers, and friends could get a lot of enjoyment out of, but there is so much optional content here that you may be very surprised to come across the ‘Choices’ screen upon completing the episode and see that you completely missed out on half the opportunities that were just a few feet in front of you. This optional content feels far different from what you would find in a Telltale adventure title, which generally makes you explore and look at everything you can in an area before moving on. It also means that playthrough time for the episode should be vastly different for many who play it; I took my time and explored and talked to everyone because I was so interested in this world and everything in it, but I know of others who completed Chysalis in less than half the time that I did because the main objective was their only one.

Strange3

Overall, the first episode of Life is Strange introduced us to a clean world filled with quirky, Juno-esque (though also extremely relevant and realistic based on where I’m from) dialogue, unique and memorable characters (at least and especially our heroine, though it does also host all of the stereotypes and cliques that we all experienced in high school), and a plot that starts with a ton character building and high school drama and ends with an ‘oh shit I need the next episode right now’ twist. It’s a commendable, ambitious debut of an intriguing-as-hell new IP, and I cannot wait the six weeks for the next episode.

Life is Strange: Episode 1 – Chysalis scores an extra crispy sensitive 4/5.

tl;dr

+ Adds a game-changing mechanic to the genre.

+ Great introduction and build up to an awesome twist.

+ Stellar sound and voice acting, gorgeous graphics.

– Terribad lip syncing

– Some too stereotypical characters.

Briefly: Early this morning, while Canadians were putting aside their polite stereotypes and fighting over the latest Amiibo, and Americans were (likely) sleeping peacefully, Nintendo debuted a release date announcement trailer for the heavily anticipated Xenoblade Chronicles 3D.

The game hits North American shores on April 10th. Just keep in mind that you’ll need the NEW 3DS XL to be able to play the thing. Nintendo also revealed via twitter that Xenoblade Chronicles 3D will feature some (fairly unexciting) Amiibo support:

Yep, some in-game tokens for tapping your ridiculously valuable Shulk Amiibo… but the game looks fantastic, so who cares!

Take a look at the trailer below, and let us know if you’ll be picking up a new 3DS for this one!

Briefly: Nobody knows what it means at this point, but in some way, shape, or form, Nintendo has thought about variant Amiibo.

NeoGAF user KT$2448 has discovered CSPIA certificates on Nintendo’s official website pointing to Silver and Gold Edition versions of the Mario Amiibo.

Nintendo is yet to comment on the findings, but if these end up being released, it’s bound to be hell for Amiibo hunters everywhere. Wave 3 figures have been hard enough to come by in stores, and any additional pre-order units typically sell within minutes. Gold and Silver Edition figures could make those Marth, Villager, and Wii Fit Trainer figures that you’re still hunting for seem common in comparison.

Are you still hunting for wave 3? What do you think of the prospect of variant figures? Speculate below, and we’ll be sure to fill you in as soon as we learn more!

Briefly: Well, after that mysterious and enticing teaser trailer from yesterday morning, Marvel and Netflix has just debuted the full teaser trailer for Aprils Daredevil.

It’s way, way better than the Ant-Man trailer, and (as we knew long ago) it’s going to be 13-episodes of the man without fear goodness. Guess who’s not going to work today?

The production values here look high, I dig the way Charlie Cox presents himself as Matt Murdock, and I love seeing that Frank Miller inspired black suit in motion. It’s going to be very interesting to see how Marvel handles an actual superhero in a TV show, and I cannot wait for April 10th.

Take a look at the teaser below, and let us know what you think! Daredevil hits Netflix on April 10th.

“Marvel’s Daredevil” follows the journey of Matt Murdock, who was blinded as a young boy but imbued with extraordinary senses, now fighting against injustice by day as a lawyer, and by night as the super hero Daredevil in modern day Hell’s Kitchen, New York City.

When Nintendo announced that it was discontinuing its Club Nintendo rewards program, they promised that February would usher in a final set of giveaways for the faithful fans to spend their coins on. Like clockwork, the first weekday of the month greeted us with more digital and physical rewards than we would ever be able to afford, making it easy to dump all of our digital currency before the June 30th deadline.

Highlights of the giveaways include Legend of Zelda 3DS pouches, a retro Mario Bros. T-Shirt, a Majora’s Mask messanger bag or jigsaw puzzle, and 2013 Platinum Reward posters. On the digital side, must own titles like The Wonderful 101 and Earthbound highlight over a dozen options as well, in case free games are more your thing.

Briefly: It won’t hit your TV sets until the end of the month (February 25th, to be exact), but The CW and Grant Gustin have just given us our first look at Brandon Routh and his The Atom costume.

First, the CW promo photo:

And here’s Gustin’s look at the empty costume on set.:

This is today. But you’ll have to wait a while… #TheFlash #Atom

Now, I’m way behind on Arrow, and have done a pretty stand-up job at avoiding spoilers up to this point. In any case, are you looking forward to seeing Routh in costume? What have you thought of the season so far? Sound out below!
