Frustration. That is the word that comes to mind when talking about Paper Mario Color Splash. While the game is easily an improvement from the embarrassment that was 2012’s Paper Mario Sticker Star, the game still struggles with a lot of the issues that plagued the previous title, which results in slow paced, boring, and overall disappointing experience.color-splashThe game starts off promisingly enough. Beautiful visuals and a very catchy soundtrack help get you in a good mood. Even the trademark humor that was completely absent in the 3DS predecessor seems to be back in some form, and the initial opening is very reminiscent of Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door. All seems to be fine and dandy.color-splash-1That is until the gameplay is introduced. Once again, the series has forgone its traditional turn based RPG roots, in favor of a more gimmicky based battle system. Throughout the game you can find, buy, and sell special cards which you use in battle. These are used by selecting a card in your hand via the Wii U gamepad, coloring it in, and then flicking it. While it was amusing the first couple of times, it quickly wore out its welcome. Now, I’m not opposed to changing up how encounters work. In fact, I very much enjoyed the real time battle system in Super Paper Mario, but what the game fails to do with its battle system is find ways to properly incentivize fighting.color-splash-2The game tries to fix this problem by adding hammer scraps. Every time you defeat enemies, you’ll collect scraps of a cardboard hammer, and of you collect enough, you’ll be able to increase your max paint you can use. This however, still does not really work out as the game often forces you into battles rather than the originals which made you want to battle in order to level up. Add to the fact that enemies are already ridiculously easy, and there’s really no joy to the combat at all. I often found myself constantly running away from battles just to preserve my cards for the impending boss fights.  Sadly, those are also very flawed. All main bosses will need a specific set of cards in order for you to beat them. If you lack the proper cards in battle. you’ll never beat them. This makes them feel more like extended and tedious puzzles than actual showdowns.
color-splash-bossSadly, the rest of the gameplay also fails to provide anything resembling fun. Most of your time will be spent running back and forth between different levels in order to find specific items and collect paint stars to open up new areas. Progress is often slow, and tedious. I’m not kidding when I’m telling you that you’ll be spending a good 5-7 hours at the start of the game just trying to get to the first boss. This is the main part of the game, and it’s really frustrating that it artificially extends itself out. Not only that, but the game can be very cryptic at times, so you might spend a good hour or 2 mindlessly wandering a level because you missed a small piece of paper sticking out of a bridge that’s integral to beating that level. After a while, not even the music or visuals can keep you going.color-splash-mapIn conclusion, Paper Mario Color Splash may seem like a step in the right direction, but is still a ways off from the original 3 entries. The biggest problem is that developer Intelligent System seemingly ignored all criticism leveled at Sticker Star and simply just tried using a handheld style approach for a console. It seems like this new team just doesn’t understand what made the series so beloved in the first place. What does the future hold for our paper mache plumber? Who knows? Hopefully, it’s better than this.color-splash-final

Final Rating: ★★/5 Stars

We’re just about a month out from Pokemon Sun & Moon, so anticipation for the game is building fast.

Today, Nintendo just announced that there’ll be a free self contained demo for the game on October 18th. Users will be able to download the demo on the E-shop, catch and discover some of the Alola formed Pokemon, and even capture Ash’s Greninja which can be transferred into the full game! Pretty awesome that we’re getting this demo in the first place to help level out anticipation. That or it’ll just make people more impatient.

Are you excited for the demo? What kind of Alola Pokemon are you hoping to find? Tell us in the comments below!

It may still be a few days from October but that hasn’t stopped the early launch of seasonal merchandise. Disney does it. Trader Joe’s does it. And it turns out, so does Pokémon Center. Their batch of Halloween-flavored goodness is called “The Halloween Circus Collection.” The collection consists of pins, plushes, and keychains themed to a Gothic circus exhibition. Mostly what that translates into are a bunch of adorable Pokémon dressed in even cuter outfits.

Here are some of the highlights:
p2914_701-00100_01 Pikachu Halloween Circus Poké Plush ($17.99)

It isn’t a party without Pikachu and the little guy is decked out in a Chandelure- themed Jester costume. Its hood is removable (nice touch). The plush stands eight and a half inches tall. If that size is a tad too big for you, there is the plush keychain option as well.

p2300_710-01676_01

Gengar, Duskull, Golbat, and Mismagius Costume Pikachu Pin Set ($28.99)

Pikachu shows his spooky side with this four-piece pin set. I am in love with the Duskull pin in particular. You may recognize the Golbat  one from last year’s merchandise.

p2914_701-00105_01

Drifloon Halloween Circus Plush Keychain ($9.99)

This plush keychain is my favorite out of the entire collection. Just look at the little guy’s face, with the glaring eyes and all! Also there is just something about a Drifloon wearing a Zubat hat that I find innately endearing. The keychain isn’t that big (four inches long) but than again, neither is the price tag.

p2914_701-00099_01

Pikachu Pumpkin Card Case ($14.99)

For those of us who use bus passes or any other form of transportation documentation, card cases like this one are quite handy. With a retractable cord attached to its metal clip, your ticket/pass can stay within the security of the case while being tapped. And unlike last year’s Joltik card case, this one also features a small zippered compartment for cash. If you really dig the whole Pikachu-as-a-pumpkin thing, I would also recommend you check out the plush hatplush keychain, and Poké Plush featuring the same design.

If you are anywhere in the vicinity of Nintendo NY (formerly Nintendo World) in New York’s Rockefeller Center on October 7, I would totally head on over for a grand shindig to honor release of VIZ Media’s Super Mario Adventures.

The book is a compilation of manga, written by Kentaro Takekuma and illustrated by Charlie Nozawa, that ran in issues of Nintendo Power from 1992 to 1993. As one would expect, the story follows Mario and Luigi and their adventures to rescue Princess Toadstool and thwart Bowser. The entire series is contained within the single full-color volume. Super Mario Adventures will retail for $14.99.

SuperMarioAdventurescover

At the Nintendo NY event, party-goers can expect themed cupcakes, photo-ops with Mario and Luigi, plus an autograph/ Question and Answer session with surprise VIZ Media guests. Attendees who purchase Super Mario Adventures at the event will also receive an exclusive poster (while supplies last). The release party takes place on Friday, October 7 from 6PM to 8PM.

Are you planning on attending? Let us know in the comments!

Well folks, this week might be the fabled week we’ve all been waiting for. For what?, you may ask?

According to analysts these past couple of months, tomorrow, September 13th, 2016, is apparently the fabled date where Nintendo will finally reveal their secret NX console to the world. While it might seem like a stretch, there are some recent events that have happened today that might just hint at something big for tomorrow. Let’s take a look shall we?

It all started this morning with a simple Snapchat message from Hack My Life host Kevin Pereira snapchatted a photo of Nintendo’s booth at Gamestop Expo with the following.

pereira-nintendo

Now, by itself, this doesn’t mean much. This could easily not be NX related and just be a tease of their booth or a possible new game announcement, however, he did make some suspicious tweets afterwards. The tweets were later deleted, but fast enough people like @Nibellion and @Mattrio23 were able to screen grab the tweets before they disappeared.

pereira-nx-twitter

For those who aren’t able to break the twitter code, it reads: “NX NEWS TOMORROW. MOBILE CONSOLE TWO IN ONE.” Now again, you could take this with a grain of salt and say that he’s just having a laugh by trolling everyone, but it could also hold ground. Remember the Nintendo World Championships from last year? Well, the host was none other than Pereira himself.

https://twitter.com/Attack/status/610178630426058752

Another piece of evidence I was pointed to was a post on Neogaf by user ggx2ac that shows that nintendo will be presenting at Gamestop conference tomorrow around 8-9AM. What date have most analysts and rumors predicted the NX for? September 13th. If you’re interested in seeing the post, check it out here.

The last piece of evidence is very interesting. According to twitter user @NWPlayer123 Nintendo has updated their NX SDK. (Software Development Kit.) This shows that Nintendo is getting ready to make NX development public as well as a possible general reveal.

nx-sdk

So, with all this info we’ve gotten today, Will we finally be seeing Nintendo’s big NX reveal tomorrow? Who knows. At this point it’s really impossible to predict what Nintendo is planning or when they’re planning it. Only time will tell, but for now, we wait. What do you think? Tell us your thoughts in the comments below!

Nintendo dropped an unexpected bombshell this morning.

No, not the NX (although 9-13 is fastly approaching.) No, what Nintendo announced today wasn’t a new 3DS, or Wii U, or even NX related, but instead, a partnership with Apple. YES! That Apple. Today, during this mornings Apple event, Shigeru Miyamoto and Bill Trinen took to the stage to announce Super Mario Run for IOS. The game uses the New Super Mario Bros. art style, but is not what you think it is.

b6ql99rhn5sdqnxnwgoe

Super Mario Run is not an endless runner, but instead an auto runner with a set number of levels, like a normal Mario game would. The game will be free, but will also include additional things to download for a set fee (perhaps extra levels.) The game will also include other modes such as being able to race against other friends and more! While the game will be coming to Android later on, IOS will be getting the game first starting in December.

sz3ohtfvlv8npvtwxy07

That wasn’t the only Nintendo related thing though. They also announced that starting later this year that Pokemon GO will be making it’s way to the Apple Watch. Not much will different from the normal version, but hey!, now you have Pokemon right on your wrist!

crxklgdvmaadcxb

One more small point. Nintendo also announced that a set of Super Mario stickers will be coming to iMessage sometime soon as well. You can find out more about Super Mario Run by checking out it’s website right here.

What do you think about these new announcements? Are you excited for Nintendo’s partnership? Sound off in the comments below!

In the latest trailer for the next entries in the storied Pokemon franchise, Pokemon Sun and Moon, multiple new features, Pokemon and characters were introduced, one of which will look very familiar if you’ve been hoping for a sequel to Pokemon Snap for the last decade. Check out the trailer below, then get hyped with us as we break down its many reveals!

Making the most out of its two minute run time, we’ll start with the new Pokemon. Following up on Thrusday’s reveal, Alolan Raticate was shown, with a pair of puffy cheeks to go with the new Dark/Normal typing and the Gluttony/Hustle abilities it shares with its previous form.

But how did it get so fat? Its environment, of course! According to The Pokemon Company,

Raticate in Alola live in urban areas, leading to a higher-calorie diet than that of Raticate elsewhere. This means they have tough bodies but have gotten a lot fatter. They stockpile huge amounts of food in their nests and prefer fresh fruit and high-class ingredients. Alolan Raticate is the Totem Pokémon of the trial that takes place in Verdant Cavern on Melemele Island in Pokémon Moon.

Pokemon Sun Moon 9616 Raticate

Next up is Jangmo-o, a determined Dragon type with the Soundproof and Bulletproof abilities. A determined warrior who is constantly seeking to become stronger, could this be the first in a line of this generation’s main Dragon type?

The Scaly Pokémon Jangmo-o has the pride of a warrior and never neglects its training in its pursuit of becoming stronger. This Pokémon uses the scales on its head as a weapon both offensively and defensively. It lives in harsh locales, like canyons, where it can train.

Pokemon Sun Moon 9616 Jangmo-o

Last on the list of standard Pokemon is, Type: Null. No, that’s not a new typing, but the name of the new synthetic Pokemon that’s made up of different parts. Sporting a fin, an armored head with a helmet that keeps it under control, and other various limbs to make up its body, its easily one of the most openly morbid designs the series has produced. With the Battle Armor ability, which keeps it from receiving critical hits, we’re expecting this one to give us trouble as we progress through the story and face off with Team Skull’s enforcer, Gladion.

Type: Null is a Synthetic Pokémon which was constructed to synthesize the strengths of various Pokémon, making it adaptable enough to complete a mission that requires a Pokémon as strong as the Pokémon of mythology. The mask fitted to this Pokémon’s head is a piece of equipment designed to control its power. Type: Null is the partner Pokémon of a newly revealed character—Gladion, the taciturn enforcer of Team Skull, who places a high value on being strong in battle.

Pokemon Sun Moon 9616 Null

After all this time, it seems like the evil team finally has a unique, menacing Pokemon to fight with. Nothing against a sea of Rattatas and Zubats, but it was hard to take them seriously.

If these are the new Pokemon, what are the Ultra Beasts? That’s what the Aether Foundation hopes to find out. This new organization led by Lusamine, Faba, and Wicke, is researching these otherworldly creatures alongside their employees. Knowing that they could pose a threat to humans and Pokemon alike. what direction will they take the story into once they’re introduced? Could we be getting a more detailed story again like in Black/White? I wouldn’t even be surprised if Aether has some ulterior motives of their own…

But perhaps the most important reveal of all was the Pokemon Finder, a new camera based mini game that might look familiar to those N64 gamers who have been clamoring for a certain photography based sequel. Using your Rotom Pokedex, trainers will be able to view the environment through its lens, taking pictures of Pokemon in the wild and unlocking new upgrades with the points they score for good shots. While not a full-on Pokemon Snap follow-up, it’s great to see its game play be adapted into the main series.

Pokemon Sun Moon 9616 Finder

Rounding out the trailer was the differences between each version and a side quest that explains how we’re going to come across those Zygarde Complete Formes. While the two versions have always had variations in their character roster, Sun and Moon takes that further with each version being scaled 12 hours apart from each other. So it will be night time during the day in Moon, while Sun follows the normal flow of time. This effects certain events in the game as well, such as some Totem Pokemon being different between each version. Either way, trainers will eventually come across Dexio and Sina, Professor Sycamore’s two assistants from and Y, and help them gather Zygarde Cells throughout the environment, to eventually compile enough to give the legendary Pokemon its true form.

With so much news, there was plenty to love. But what was your favorite part of the trailer? Let us know in the comments!

Since the original Nintendo DS launched over 10 years ago, Pikmin always seemed like it would be a natural fit for the touch screen, (which was proven on the Wii U with Pikmin 3.) It may have taken a decade to land on handheld platforms, but Olimar and his army of adorable carrots are finally coming to the 3DS. Except… It’s nothing like what any of us would expect.

Trading in its real time strategy game play for what can only be described as an action focused 2D platformer, Pikmin for the Nintendo 3DS looks to turn what we know about the series on its head. Alternating between the fire resistant red Pikman, the high flying yellow Pikmin that laugh off the dangers of electricity, or the blue Pikmin, which are the only type that can survive in water, Olimar will use them to attack, solve puzzles, and fight bosses as he works his way towards the end of each stage.

Not much is known about the game outside of its reveal trailer, such as whether or not the other Pikmin variants like the white, purple, pink or rock Pikmin will make an appearance, but I’m approaching this one cautiously at the moment. What we’ve seen looks good so far, but we only have to look to last year’s Chibi Robo: Zip Lash to find a sequel where an established game was converted to a 2D platformer for the sake of wider appeal, only for it to lose much of what made it special in the process. Let’s hope Olimar and his crew avoid this pitfall.

Thoughts on the new Pikmin? Are you excited about the new direction, or would you prefer the classic style to return? Sound off below and let us know!

Just when you thought StreetPass Mii Plaza was quietly retired, we get pulled back in.

During today’s 3DS focused Nintendo Direct, it was announced that a much needed update to the popular StreetPass Mii Plaza, where 3DS owners could retrieve information and characters from other handhelds that they cross paths with to use in a variety of mini games. Players who find themselves passing by droves of people will finally find relief in the character cap increasing from 10 to 100, making it so you’ll have to empty it out far less frequently than in the past. Personally speaking, the biggest reason why I don’t use the feature nearly as much as I used to is because it defeated the purpose of bringing games with me when I would have to be glued to this app in order to constantly empty it. Being able to speed through the Mii introductions and accumulate ten times the amount of characters at a time is a very welcomed improvement, even if this change should have come years ago.

Considering most hardcore StreetPassers would have gotten everything they wanted out of all the games by now, Nintendo also revealed five new Plaza games that can be purchased immediately following the presentation. Promising to be even less time consuming than games past, each one aims to give you quick, yet satisfying rewards from building your community of players. The released games are:

Slot Car Rivals

A racing game where you compete against the best times of the people you StreetPass with.

StreetPass Mii Plaza Slot Car Rivals

Market Crashers

Make stock market predictions based on the advice of the Mii’s you StreetPass and become a digital Bernie Madoff.

StreetPass Mii Plaza Market Crashers

Ninja Launcher

Stuff ninja clad Mii’s in a cannon and shoot them at things!

StreetPass Mii Plaza Ninja Launcher

Mii Trek

Giving the step counter a purpose outside of Play Coins, the accumulated steps from the Mii’s you collect allow your team of characters to travel farther and discover unknown treasures.

StreetPass Mii Plaza Mii Trek

Feed Mii

Use ingredients gathered from Mii’s to make the perfect meal.

StreetPass Mii Plaza Feed Mii

Of the five, your choice of either Slot Car Rivals or Market Crashers can be downloaded for free. From there, you can purchase any of the four from within the app for $2.99, or all five in a bundle for $8.99. For those taking the plunge, you’ll want to be near a wireless hotspot this weekend as well, since another National StreetPass Weekend will allow you to gather Mii’s from across the country at select locations.

Let us know what games you’re planning on picking up, and if this update is enough to get you to go back to your StreetPassing ways!

Looks like the trend of Wii U games making their way to the 3DS isn’t ending any time soon.

Announced this morning during the newest Nintendo Direct, we learned that the super popular Super Mario Maker will be getting its own 3DS port. The handheld version is set to include all tools from the console version and even a brand new tutorial mode to help inspire you to create levels! Sadly, some of the online features from the Wii U version had to be neutered, but in its place, one of the new ways to play peoples levels will be through street pass and local wireless connection. Not only that, but you’ll still be able to play recommended courses and the super popular 100 Mario challenge!

SMM 3DS

That’s still not even everything! Also included will be around 100 or so pre made courses by Nintendo that will have you trying to accomplish many different challenges such as defeating all enemies or collecting all coins within the time limit.  The best part is that you don’t have to wait much longer because the game launches on December 2nd! Are you excited for this port, or are you just going to stick with the Wii U version? Tell us in the comments below!

Before this morning’s Nintendo Direct, we thought the only Amiibo news we would have to look forward to in the coming months was the release of the fantastic looking Breath of the Wild figurines we told you about at E3. Now, we’re feeling that old Amiibo Hunter call as Nintendo announced four classic Legend of Zelda Amiibo, taking us from the series’ beginnings, to the toon shaded variants from The Wind Waker.

Featuring an 8-bit version of Link modeled after his NES debut, a new Ocraina of Time version with the Hero of Time playing his titular instrument in a pose that looks like it’s ripped straight from the game’s timeless artwork, and the debut of Toon Zelda alongside the baton wielding Toon Link in a new double pack, each figure will function like their standard counterparts across their compatible games. In addition, each one was teased to have compatibility with Breath of the Wild, but in what ways was not yet specified.

I have to say that I absolutely love that Toon Zelda is getting the Amiibo treatment, and with Wind Waker being my favorite game in the series, I’ll always welcome more toys to throw my money at. Admittedly though, the Ocarina of Time variant is my favorite of the bunch, which looks gorgeous in the released images. The Ocarina doesn’t get enough love, so seeing it represented here just feels special, especially when I imagine how nice it would look on that Master Sword stand! My only complaint? If we’re getting three new Link’s and a new Zelda, this would have been a perfect time for a Toon Ganondorf release! Oh well, we’ll take what we can get.

What are your thoughts on the new Amiibo reveals, or on the Direct as a whole? Sound off in the comments and let us know!

Nintendo’s 3DS focused Nintendo Direct presentation couldn’t have gone on without some new Pokemon news. As expected, the highly anticipated Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon got their share of the spotlight, with a new version of everyone’s favorite candy and stardust fodder, Rattata. Alongside some new moves and a bonus for early buyers, the reasons to get excited keep on piling up!

First, following the trend of giving the original 150 new forms, Rattata now comes as a dual type, adding Dark to its typical Normal typing. Standing in a bipedal stance and seemingly wearing armor, the things look as terrifying as you would expect a giant rat would. Coming equipped with either the Gluttony or Hustle, the Route 1 mainstay will either eat its equipped berry faster, or have increased attack at the expense of physical move accuracy. We can only assume that a new form will follow for its evolved form, Raticate, but we’ll have to wait a bit longer for official confirmation.

Pokemon Sun Moon Rattata Banner

Next, you know those fancy Z-Moves that we’ve been talking about? The super attacks that are supposed to be type exclusive? Well, now we’ve learned that some Pokemon will now have Z-Moves exclusive to them. Showing off Alola Form Raichu’s Stoked Sparksurfer attack in the trailer below, (as if the surfing themes surrounding it weren’t strong enough), Pikachu’s evolved form will ride its tail through the sky, only to crash down for a devastating electric attack. While without its own Alola Form, Snorlax will squash opponents flat with its Pulverizing Pancake, bringing new meaning to the phrase, “throwing your weight around.”

Speaking of Snorlax, early purchasers will receive a special Munchlax. The pre-evolved version of Snorlax holds Snorlian-Z, a special item that allows it to tap into its most powerful move once evolved. You’ll have until January 11 to redeem it, so make sure you don’t sleep on it.

We must ask though, are Z-Moves completely replacing Mega Evolution? They work similarly by needing a hold item to activate, and the Alola forms seem to cover new versions of old Pokemon. Considering we haven’t heard a peep about Mega Evolving throughout the entire build towards the Sun and Moon release, will it make a return at all? We’ll surely know once we get closer to the game’s November 18 launch, but until then, let’s keep speculating!

As fans of Fire Emblem Fates, we couldn’t be more thrilled with the latest pre-order from Good Smile Company’s Nendoroid series of figures: Elise! Fans will remember her as the youngest of the four royal siblings of Nohr.

318a2be2a69619dca55be042d19a4bf0

Elise’s starting class in Fates was Troubadour, so it stands to reason that she would come with a Heal Staff and “healing effects” accessory. Look at her! She looks like a freaking magical girl!

b1c60e3c16efa9613fa2788ddb379b6d

And no troubadour is complete without their horse! Elise is packaged with a special equine wearing gear to match its rider. The horse’s front legs are also posable.

88e4b0c9b658caa3552adef084df255c

Elise is a princess of many moods and as such comes with three different facial expressions to swap out as you please: a standard expression, a smiling expression (seen in the header), and an upset expression. I adore her “upset” face. The sculptor did an amazing job with the puffed-out cheeks and pursed lips.

You can pre-order Nendoroid Elise now for ¥5,370 before tax. She is available at the official Good Smile Company online store. Nendoroid Elise is scheduled to ship in January 2017.

Nendoroid Corrin (Female) is also planned! This concept art is the only information on the figure we have at this time.

As the final Splatfest came to a close, it was Team Marie who narrowly beat out Team Callie in both popularity and wins. With that final victory, it was time for Inklings around the world to say goodbye to one of the most enjoyable aspects of Splatoon, where players voted and fought for their favorite option between two choices in monthly competitions. Now that the dust has settled and all battles have been fought, it’s time to look back on the past year of contests and see how our choices stacked up.

With a feature that started with Team Dog vs. Team Cat, Splatfests grew to include some incredible crossovers that featured Autobots vs. Decepticons, Pokemon Red vs. Pokemon Blue, and SpongeBob vs. Patrick. Looking back, could any of us had predicted that an arena shooter made by a company that was as far removed from the genre as you could imagine would grow to be so popular?

For those keeping score, despite losing the final Splatfest, Team Callie came out on top overall, with nine wins versus Marie’s seven. That’s not to say there wasn’t a certain level of controversy throughout, considering the way scoring was tallied was changed a few times over the last year. With more popular teams having a harder time finding opponents to play against, they would often fight their own teammates while the opposite team would have more chances to build up wins. Still, Marie would go on to close a 7-2 lead to come within striking distance of coming out with more wins, although some would argue that the final Splatfest is all that matters. One way or another, no matter what side of the debate you’re on, I’m guessing we can all agree on one thing…

Final Splatfest Dialogue

How often did the results go your way? Were you able to save up a ton of Super Sea Snails? And how are you going to go on with your life knowing there won’t be any Splatfests to look forward to? Look back on the last year of Splatoon in the video below and share your thoughts with us!

Briefly: Last week, Nintendo and Niantic delayed the global launch of Pokémon GO amidst major, consistent server issues that players have been experience due to GO being one of the biggest mobile (and potentially gaming in general) launches of all time.

Since then, the game has slowly been rolling out to new, mostly European countries (sorry, Japan and Canada), culminating with a launch in 26 new countries early this morning. It also appears that the game’s servers have been down all morning, with most players blaming the outage on the gigantic expansion of the game’s availability.

Apparently, this may not be the case, as hacker group PoodleCorp has taken to Twitter to take credit for the ongoing outage.

https://twitter.com/PoodleCorp/status/754298236093857792

They noted that this attack “Just was a lil test, we will do something on a larger scale soon.”

https://twitter.com/xotehpoodle/status/754329907300339712

It’s tough to tell whether this was a true attack, or just another server failure (as has been all too common with Pokémon GO since its launch), but with nobody able to log in, and for such a long time, there’s definitely something different about this outage.

Bastards. What are we supposed to do with this warm Summer day now!?

Are you playing Pokémon GO? Of course you are. What’s been your best catch so far?

Alright, Nintendo. First you team up with Vans Shoes and give us amazing Nintendo-themed footwear. Last week, you unleash Pokemon GO on us and overtake our lives. Now on this day, you announce that the Nintendo Entertainment System is coming back?

That sound you hear right now is the sound of millions of old-school Nintendo fans crying tears of joy.

Earlier today, Nintendo revealed they will be releasing the NES Classic Edition–a smaller version of the Nintendo Entertainment System–on November 11. The NES Classic Edition with come with an HDMI cable, a replica NES Classic Controller (yes, just like the 1985 original), and will come packed with 30 pre-installed NES games. Additional NES Controllers will be sold separately for $9.99.

unnamed (1) NES_Classic_2

The system will include the following 30 games:

  • Balloon Fight
  • Bubble Bobble
  • Castlevania
  • Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest
  • Donkey Kong
  • Donkey Kong Jr.
  • Double Dragon II: The Revenge
  • Dr. Mario
  • Excitebike
  • Final Fantasy
  • Galaga
  • Ghosts ‘N Goblins
  • Gradius
  • Ice Climber
  • Kid Icarus
  • Kirby’s Adventure
  • Mario Bros.
  • Mega Man 2
  • Metroid
  • Ninja Gaiden
  • Pac-Man
  • Punch Out!! Featuring Mr. Dream
  • Star Tropics
  • Super C
  • Super Mario Bros.
  • Super Mario Bros. 2
  • Super Mario Bros. 3
  • Tecmo Bowl
  • The Legend of Zelda
  • Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link

The NES Classic Edition will allow players to save, suspend, and restart their games at any time, so those days of starting a stage over from scratch are now a thing of the past. Additionally, those who own the Wii Classic Controller of the Wii Classic Controller Pro will be able to use them on the NES Classic Edition.

Nintendo of America President and COO Reggie Fils-Aime says, “We wanted to give fans of all ages the opportunity to revisit Nintendo’s original system and rediscover why they fell in love with Nintendo in the first place. The Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition is dieal for anyone who remembers playing the NES, or wants those nostalgic memories to the next generation of gamers.”

With a $59.99 MSRP, the NES Classic Edition will undoubtedly be a hot item this holiday season.

Geekscapists, it is shocking to see that some beloved NES games have failed to make the list. For example, where is Contra? If we’re talking about amazing and beloved co-op games, why not include the grandaddy of them all? Anyway, what say you? If you could replace a game on the list with one of your personal favorites, what would it be? Sound off in the comments below (or on our Twitter account: @geekscapegames) and we will discuss your choices on an upcoming episode of the Geekscape Games Podcast!

Man, Capcom and Nintendo are killing it with these crossovers! They already announced DLC starring outfits from The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Strider, Fire Emblemand Okami. And now, we can add Star Fox to the growing list. This one feels very fitting for the cat-like Palico and Prowler buddies, given their furry exterior.

Not only will Captain Fox McCloud be made available as a costume but it appears as though Slippy Frog, Peppy Hare, and Falco Lombardi are also getting similar treatment.

Monster Hunter Generations for the Nintendo 3DS releases on July 15. Will you be joining the hunt?

Briefly: Sorry, world.

While seemingly every single person populating the US, Australia, and New Zealand has been playing Pokémon GO non-stop for nearly a week a this point, the rest of the planet (including the Great White North, where I’m situated) has been waiting (im)patiently for the unbelievably anticipated title to hit their respective App and Google Play stores.

While Niantic was originally planning to roll the title out to additional regions in the days following its soft launch, it now sounds like it could be some time before Canada, Europe, and even Japan (well, and everywhere else) will be able to start their new addiction.

In an interview with Business Insider, Niantic CEO John Hanke let the outlet know that the expansion of the game has been “paused until we’re comfortable.”

While the game’s reliability has been constantly improving, errors, crashes, and server outages are still consistent problems at peak times (and it seems like it’s always a peak time).

I don’t think that Nintendo or Niantic could have guessed the absolute phenomenon that they now have on their hands (Hanke stated that “We thought the game would be popular, but it obviously struck a nerve,”) so the server problems that have plagued the online-only game aren’t surprising whatsoever. Hell, I’m playing in a country where the game hasn’t launched yet (which isn’t overly hard to do), and I witnessed 50-75 players rush to a Lure Module placed a couple of blocks from my house. I have never seen anything like this before.

What have you thought of Pokémon GO so far? Do you agree with Josh’s initial impressions? Be sure to sound out in the comments below! #TeamValor!

During their Anime Expo 2016 panel, Intl Creates had two big announcements regarding their Azure Striker Gunvolt action platforming series. First, the first and second games would be getting a physical release in the form of the Striker Pack, courtesy of Yacht Club Games. But perhaps more surprisingly, the series will soon be getting its own anime adaptation in the form of an OVA.

While little was said about what the show would cover, we do know that it’s likely to be a single episode considering how it’s being classified. Whether or not it will be a short episode or movie length is unknown, but chances are it will be long enough to cover the events of the first game.

The irony is that Mighty No. 9, which was co-produced by Intl Creates, announced its own anime version a few years ago at the very same convention, but not much has been said about it since. Yet, much like the games that they’re based off of, Gunvolt is ahead of the game, with its sequel, AND its anime counterpart debuting in 2016. No extra Kickstarters required!

Check out the teaser below and let us know what you think. Expect the OVA to be out by the end of the year, with the Striker Pack hitting stores on September 30.

Azure Striker Gunvolt is one of the highlights of the 3DS eShop. The developer behind 2D platforming classics like the Mega Man Zero series took their expertise and showed that they didn’t need Mega Man to shine, creating some compelling mechanics that showed how creative minds can reinvigorate an old genre. With the second game on the way, it looked like the team wanted to give us all an interesting way to catch up.

At Anime Expo 2016, the team announced that they were partnering up with Yacht Club Games, (the group behind the excellent Shovel Knight), to deliver both the first and second games to store shelves as physical copies. Called the Striker Pack, $29.99 will get you both the first and second game one one cartridge, which will mark the first time the series is being released outside of digital platforms. Taking some obvious inspiration from their previous works, the simple, yet effective action platforming made it more important to tag enemies for long range damage instead of shooting them to death. With the second game introducing a second character who locks on by dashing into his foes, these two play styles seem to be suited for both the defensive and offensive player.

With the anime being announced during the same panel, it looks like Gunvolt is making big moves. Check out the game in action below, then make sure to check back with us as we post our hands-on impressions of the new mechanics from the show floor. Are you planning on picking up the game when it releases on September 30? Let us know in the comments!

2005 was the year that Phoenix Wright took the courtroom by storm here in the West, and where Phoenix was, Maya Fey wasn’t far behind. But after getting in her fair share of trouble across the first three games as Nick’s spirit channeling assistant, the pair went their separate ways, failing to make a significant appearance in the series since.

As you might have heard, that’s about to change with the sixth mainline Ace Attorney game. Considering Spirit of Justice partially takes place in a country known for spirit mediums, you know Maya can’t be far. Splitting protagonist duties between two characters for the first time in series history, Phoenix will be by Maya’s side in the country of Khura’in while Apollo takes back his starring role as he holds the fort at the Wright Anything Agency. As detailed in our E3 preview, Phoenix will take on a court system that has banished lawyers, (thanks to its method of viewing the final moments of the deceased when they were killed), with some new mechanics that will help turn the tables. On the other side of the world, Apollo and Athena will use their unique skills, (including Athena’s psychoanalyzing that debuted in the fifth game), creating a unique gameplay experience for each.

Naturally, we’re expecting plenty of strange spirit shenanigans with Maya back in the mix, but will we see the return of any of the other Fey girls? What’s Pearl up to these days? It can’t be any weirder than that time Maya helped Nick fight Marvel’s strongest heroes in Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3. Either way, make sure to watch the trailer below and watch Maya’s return fully voice acted, then check back with us as our coverage of the Spirit of Justice panel goes into detail on what we can expect from the next big turnabout.

Briefly: While Josh’s in-depth look at Niantic’s Pokémon GO made us wary at just how much fun the addicting-looking title may actually be, it appears that it won’t be long now before you can download the game yourself and draw your own conclusions about it.

That’s right. Pokémon GO has finally begun to roll out on the iOS App Store, as well as Google Play. Currently the game is only available for download in the always-first Australia and New Zealand regions, but that mean’s that it won’t be long before North Americans, Europeans and the like will be able to throw their first Pokéballs too.

As a previously avid player of Niantic’s Ingress, I was beyond excited when the company announced Pokémon GO. As Josh mentioned, the positives far outweigh the negatives, but just don’t expect a full Pokémon experience.

Honestly, I’m terrified for my relationships and my phone’s battery at this point, and I’m stoked to be headed down to San Diego in just over a week, where I should see an entirely different assortment on Pokémon than I will in my Vancouver homeland.

Are you excited for Pokémon GO? Be sure to sound out in the comments below! If you’re in Australia or New Zealand, you can click here to download the game on iOS, and here for Android!

Today marks the release of the latest trailer of Pokémon Sun/Moon in Japan. The video showcased a plethora of new monsters that players can look forward to collecting. As for the Pokémon designs, well, its kind of a mixed bag. Let’s take a look at the video.

If you couldn’t catch all of the information flying at you (there was quite a bit), here are some of the highlights:

PokemonSMtrailer8

First, there is the electric/fairy-type, Kapu-Kokeko. I would assume this is one is tied to the story in some way, judging by the little cutscene at the beginning of the trailer.

PokemonSMtrailer7

PokemonSMtrailer6

Next is the bug/electric-type Denjimushi and its evolution, Kuwaganon. Odd-looking thing, isn’t it?

PokemonSMtrailer5

My favorite is this one, the Jijiiron. It is a derpy yet majestic normal/dragon-type.

PokemonSMtrailer4

In the “what on earth?” category is this water/psyhic-type, Hagigishiri. My guess is that the design is supposed to invoke fish native to Hawaii while making monstrous.

PokemonSMtrailer3

This is the bug/fairy-type, Aburii. Not much I can say on this one. A bee-mosquito hybrid?

PokemonSMtrailer2

This round, ball of cuteness is the electric/steel-type togedemaru.

PokemonSMtrailer1

The final highlight is Zygarde’s new form, dubbed “Perfect Form.”

Wow! That is a lot of new stuff to digest. What is your opinion of the new Pokémon shown today?

After 15 Splatfests, each one has been preparing us for this one final showdown. We’ve had Spongebob vs Patrick, Autobots vs Decepticons, and even Pokemon Red vs Pokemon Blue, but those choices pale in comparison compared to choosing which Squid Sister is best girl.

Closing out what will be a near 14 month run that has introduced an insane amount of new stages, content updates, competitions, modes and weapon DLC, all of which has been free, Splatoon is wrapping up its run with the final Splatfest. Knowing that these monthly-ish competitions that brought players from each region together under a common banner will be no more at the close of the competition, what better way to wrap them up than by swearing allegiance to Team Callie or Team Marie?

Splatoon Final Splatfest 2

Considering many people already vote based on which sister represents what, there are others like myself who can’t choose. The enthusiastic and energetic Callie won my heart early with her dopiness and charm, but Marie and her dry sarcasm grew on me to the point where this might be the hardest choice yet. I can’t imagine one without the other! It’s like having to pick your favorite daughter! Your squid daughter. Who is kind of hot. Wait, what?

According to the official Splatoon Tumblr page, things are going to be a little different this time. Players will be able to vote on the stages being used for the contest, while the top 10 players in Japan and North America / Europe respectively will be featured in some way once the Splatfest ends. Beginning on July 4th, (a perfect day for Splatfest fireworks if I do say so myself), Inklings will be able to begin voting ahead of the July 22nd showdown.”, where we’ll have from 2 AM PT to 2 AM PT on July 24th to ink some turf under our united banner and earn those ranks one last time. Maybe not so coincidentally, these dates are only a few weeks after the new Splatoon amiibo are hitting store shelves here in the West. Looks like Nintendo is wrapping up their support with a bang!

With the Splatfests ending, will there be any other way to earn the exclusive Super Sea Snails to strengthen our gear? We’ll report it as soon as we find out. While the game itself will likely be playable for a long time to come, let’s get ready to say goodbye to support for a game that went from being considered a huge risk as Nintendo entered the shooter market, to becoming one of the most successful new IP’s in recent memory, to the point where its originality, charm and soundtrack gave it massive crossover appeal. It even had concerts in Japan! No matter what side you’re on, let’s make this final showdown one to remember. And as always…

Callie and Marie Banner

Note: This preview is based on the most recent beta version of the game and may not represent the final product.

Despite being a huge Pokemon fan dating back to its North American debut in 1998, I’ve been very skeptical of Pokemon GO since its announcement. In the midst of the public’s seemingly universal excitement, I remember being left with more questions than answers. How would battles work? Is this going to drain your data usage? And how will the dreaded in-app purchases convince us to spend a few dollars here and there to catch that one Pokemon that continues to allude us? After playing the latest beta version of the game ahead of its rumored July release, I found the answers I was looking for. Make no mistake about it, Pokemon GO is a blast to play as long as you keep your expectations in check.

Much like the core games, you take up the role of a Pokemon Trainer who is tasked with filling your Pokedex by catching all of the Pokemon you come across. After being introduced to an unseen professor, you’ll create your character from a small range of customization options, (which I’m hoping will be increased in the final version, lest we have the majority of trainers looking nearly identical), be given a package of Poke Balls, and be on your way.

Using your phone’s GPS, built in fitness app and location tracking, your surroundings become your real life Pokemon world. Promising that terrains in real life would host Pokemon that you’d expect to see in these environments, living in the hot, dry areas of Southern California resulted in me finding numerous Rock, Fire and Ground Pokemon almost immediately. From the Onix that was right outside my doorstep, to the Vulpix and Growlithe around the block, the game didn’t hold out on the amount of popular characters they were willing to give me from the start. Limited to the first 150 Pokemon from the original Red and Blue games, it never took long to encounter a childhood favorite.

Pokemon GO Screen 3

Pokemon encounters brought to life thanks to your phone’s camera inserting them into your surroundings.

To verify whether or not terrains really did matter, I took the game with me on a hike to the local park, expecting to find many of the forest bugs and mice that typically call these areas their home. Once there, results were mixed. While there was a definite shift in the frequency I was encountering some Pokemon, (such as being surrounded by Spearow and Tauros constantly), the Rattatas and Pidgeys I was constantly encountering in the city were very much a common sight here. Even more confusing was aside from frequent run-ins with Paras, there was not a bug to be found with the exception of one Weedle that was too far to chase down. In fact, I saw more Caterpie silhouettes on my way to the park than the park itself. Could the park be considered a similar terrain compared to the city? Or was I having a bad string of luck? I haven’t had a chance to test the game in vastly different areas like the beach, but aside from a random Omanyte I found in the street, I didn’t encounter a water Pokemon the entire time I played, so I’m guessing there’s some credence to the area making a difference. Either way, I can’t complain about the park too much when I found a Pikachu there.

With so many Pokemon to catch, what happens when you need more Poke Balls to catch them with? The boring solution would be to buy some at the store with in-game currency that the professor was kind enough to give me. In addition to Lucky Eggs, which grant more Trainer experience for winning battles or catching Pokemon over a certain amount of time, (your character is the only one who levels up in a traditional sense), Pokemon attracting Incense, bag and Pokemon storage upgrades, and a Lure Patch, that calls monsters to designated Poke Stops, (certain landmarks, art pieces or points of interest marked on the map), packs of 20 or 100 Poke Balls can be snatched up for a cheap price. Whether or not you’ll be able to continuously gather money or if you’ll eventually have to pay real cash for these goods in the final game is unknown, but as far as I can tell, you’ll never have to pony up for Poke Balls if you’re willing to put some work into it.

On the subject of Poke Stops, these marked areas are where you’re going to find all of the free items you need. By walking up to these spots, tapping them on your phone when they’re in your vicinity will grant you a set of random items, which almost always include Poke Balls. From Revives, Potions, stronger capture devices like Great and Ultra Balls, and even eggs that you can hatch, (given that you have an egg incubator to put them in and are willing to walk five kilometers each). These stops were my favorite features of the game, since they encourage you to walk around and explore your surroundings, giving new meaning to the statues and murals I walk by on a daily basis without giving a second to.

Pokemon GO Screen 5

Trust me, you’ll be thankful that these sites refresh after a few minutes for return trips too, because catching Pokemon can be a real pain sometimes. Once you encounter a Pokemon, (which you’ll find in odd places, like my Diglett on a shelf of Nutella), there’s no way to battle with them or weaken then. Instead, you’re handed your stash of Poke Balls and have to swipe your screen to throw them. Your aim counts here, so if you miss, say goodbye to your Poke Ball. Holding your throw and waiting for a fluctuating circle around your target results in a “Nice” catch, which gives you a small experience boost if you’re successful, but I didn’t find that it helped with the actual capture rate. Because you see, some of the Pokemon are insanely frustrating to catch, and often with no rhyme or reason. Rare Pokemon that I would expect to be difficult to find, like Hitmonchan, were caught within a few attempts. Zubat on the other hand, which is everywhere all the time, (which is odd that a bat would be out in 90 degree weather on a sunny day in the city, but I digress), broke out of 30 Poke Balls before I finally claimed it. *30*! It doesn’t help that they can occasionally attack, (which makes them unable to catch throughout the animation,) jump to throw off your aim, or flat out run away, wasting all of your previous effort. When you do land a difficult catch however, it’s a highly rewarding experience.

So once you’ve caught a strong roster, it’s time to challenge the gyms. Each gym is similar to a Poke Stop, which is usually set in a highly populated landmark. As mentioned before, Pokemon can’t be leveled up in the traditional sense, but each one starts off with a certain CP level, which is a measure of their strength. Using Stardust and Pokemon Candy, the latter of which is specific to particular Pokemon, (i.e. Pidgey candy for the entire Pidgey line), you can raise their power so they can stand more of a fighting chance. Candy is also the only way to evolve Pokemon, which is easily the most tedious section of the game. They need A LOT of candy to evolve, with each catch typically giving you a single piece. Duplicate Pokemon can be released to the professor in exchange for another piece, but it doesn’t do much to help the annoyance. Using Pidgey as an example again, it needs 25 pieces to evolve into Pidgeotto. At worst, that’s 13 Pidgey’s that you need to catch while releasing 12 of them for one evolution. Now take that and imagine Sandshrew for example, which is harder to find and needs 50 pieces to evolve. Having to catch so many for a simple evolution for the most basic Pokemon is insane, and I really hope the requirement is balanced out more in the final version.

Pokemon GO Screen 2

Good luck ever seeing an evolution in action.

Once at the gym, you have the option to either join it, where you’ll drop off the Pokemon of your choice and temporarily lose for as long as it’s stored in exchange for periodic boosts, or challenge it, where you fight a string of trainers who have claimed it as theirs for some big EXP rewards. Once you start battling however… You’ll find where Pokemon GO‘s biggest weakness lies. Each Pokemon only has two attacks, a basic attack and a super attack. Your basic move is used by tapping your Pokemon like crazy, so you can keep spamming your attack for huge damage. There were even cases where I would win battles against enemies that were much stronger simply because I tapped like a madman, which is not very fair, even if I came out victorious. Once your super meter is full, you’ll hold your finger on your chosen battler for about a second to unleash their stronger super attack, which deals much more damage, but can only be used sparingly. I never expected anything deep, but if you were going into this expecting battles that rivaled the main games, you’re going to be disappointed. At the very least, the type match ups and all 18 types are represented, which is further than I thought the game would go to be honest.

Pokemon GO Screen 4

Outside of the battles and frustrating catch rates however, are a series of smaller issues that add up to become pretty big annoyances. The need to have your app open for anything to register is annoying, especially when out on long walks. It doesn’t make sense to me that the game reads off of your fitness app to help track steps, but your eggs won’t come closer to hatching unless the app is on while you’re walking. Couple that with the annoying music, which is on an infinite 30 second loop and can’t be turned off without shutting your volume down completely, you’re left with either trying to listen to your music or podcasts mixing in with the game’s soundtrack, or walking in silence, making your trip much more dull. Once the Pokemon GO Plus accessory is released, this problem will be solved for catching Pokemon, but it won’t do anything when it comes to the eggs. You can’t even leave it on in the background, move your phone into landscape mode, or lock your phone while it’s running, since chances are the game will crash when you try to load it back up. While we’re talking about sound, many of the classic Pokemon jingles are either missing, or sound off. I’m not sure if this was a design choice, or if Go couldn’t license the official music for some reason, but it’s noticeable for longtime fans such as myself.

But most concerning, is that the game completely stops working when outside of a service area. While this brings up a whole separate issue for people who aren’t fortunate enough to live in a large, connected area such as myself, even I ran into areas in the park where visible Pokemon and Poke Stops became unusable because the area couldn’t receive reception. What’s going to happen at beaches, which are notorious for dropping signals? Or hiking trails like mine? It’s weird, because the game is still placing objects in these areas, expecting people to be able to use them. So what’s going to happen when some locations render parts of the game useless?

Pokemon GO Screen 1

Knowing this, the positives far outweigh the negative as long as you’re not expecting a full Pokemon experience. The game may eat through your battery, but is surprisingly light on the data usage, going up less than a half a gig for a week of constant use. With that concern out of the way, knowing that items are easily accessible for free, you’ll never be short on new Pokemon to discover, and that the app actively encourages you to explore your surroundings, I’m excited to check out the full version when it releases. Is it perfect? No. But let’s hope the main game irons out some of these issues and leaves us with a brand new way to experience the world of Pokemon.
