M. Night Shyamalan has recently wrapped on his post-apocalyptic sci-fi movie ‘After Earth’ starring Will Smith and son Jaden Smith. The film was written by Gary Whitta (‘Book Of Eli’) and we now have our first plot summary.

In After Earth, one thousand years after cataclysmic events forced humanity’s escape from Earth, Nova Prime has become mankind’s new home. Legendary General Cypher Raige (played by Will Smith) returns from an extended tour of duty to his estranged family, ready to be a father to his 13-year-old son, Kitai (played by Jaden Smith). When an asteroid storm damages Cypher and Kitai’s craft, they crash-land on a now unfamiliar and dangerous Earth. As his father lies dying in the cockpit, Kitai must trek across the hostile terrain to recover their rescue beacon. His whole life, Kitai has wanted nothing more than to be a soldier like his father. Today, he gets his chance.

Did this spark your interest? Going to Comic-Con? Well there will be a panel for ‘After Earth’ you can attend on Saturday, July 14th. . “The SDCC panel will include the film’s screenwriter Gary Whitta and cinematographer Peter Suschitzky, as well as the team behind the tie-in comic book After Earth: Innocence, artist Beni Lobel and writers Robert Greenberger and Michael Friedman. Peter David, author of the After Earth prequel novel, will also be there.”

The surprise twist is that even after all the movies he has made that we hated…we are all probably going to watch this. Let’s hope for the best this time around. I’ll be attending the panel at SDCC and will definitely let you guys know how it looks.

‘After Earth’ hits theaters June 7, 2013.

So, can’t make it to preview night for Comic-Con? Or just looking for something to do on July 11th in general? Check out ‘Easy Money’. Scott Alminiana and I had the opportunity to catch an advance screening of this film on Tuesday and I have to say…it was great. I’m not going to give a review on this movie because I honestly think it’s one of those movies you need to check out for yourself and form your own opinion on. There’s already a sequel released in Sweden and I can’t wait until it makes its way out here.

Directed by Daniel Espinosa (Safe House), ‘Easy Money’ is a Swedish crime thriller based on the international best-selling novel Snabba Cash by Jens Lapidus. Lower-class business student JW (Joel Kinnaman from AMC’s ‘The Killing’) falls in love with a sexy heiress while living a double life mingling with Stockholm’s wealthy elite. To keep up the facade of his lifestyle, he’s lured into a world of crime. Jorge is a petty fugitive on the run from both the police and Serbian mafia. He hopes that brokering a massive cocaine deal will allow him to escape for good. Mafia enforcer Mrado is on the hunt for Jorge, but his efforts are complicated when he’s unexpectedly saddled with caring for his young daughter. As JW’s journey ventures deeper into the dark world of organized crime, the fate of all three men becomes entangled and ends with a dramatic struggle for life and death.

‘Easy Money’ hits theaters July 11th.

It seems Latino Review is on a roll. They’re reporting that Legendary will be not only bringing ‘Pacific Rim’ to Comic-Con but also none other than the Tokyo crusher himself…Godzilla!

“Not only is Legendary bringing the Lizard to comic con but get this, I hear the presentation is SICK! I’m not going to get into specific spoiler territory because then what’s the point of attending the panel, but take this one to the bank.

Godzilla will stomp both the audio and video systems within Hall H two weeks from this Saturday! I’ll be there to witness it myself. I can already envision them shutting down the lights, hearing Godzilla’s roar, and the crowd going wild”

Edgar Wright’s next project will definitely be ‘At Worlds End’ but that doesn’t mean he isn’t also working on ‘Ant-Man’. Over the past few days I have had a few bits of ‘Ant-Man’ news that even included a rumor that Edgar Wright will be shooting the post-credits scene for ‘Iron Man 3’. It appears this project may be closer to reality than ever before.

Wright has been hard at work perfecting the script with Joe Cornish. But that isn’t all he has been up to. It’s been revealed that Edgar Wright has spent a week shooting a reel of footage which will be used to test out the look of the film and how the character’s powers will be portrayed on the big screen. With the rumor that we may be getting up to three non-sequel announcements during the Marvel Studios panel at Comic-Con could it possibly mean we may be getting to see this test reel? Fingers crossed.

Earlier today the internet exploded with excitement (trust me…check Twitter) when it hit that Marvel Studios would be announcing ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ at their San Diego Comic-Con panel.

Well now it seems that Variety has confirmed this report and even announced that the release date would be set at May 16, 2014. It’s also being reported that Nicole Perlman (who previously worked on ‘Thor’) has already written two drafts for the film and Marvel is very happy with her work. Marvel has not officially commented yet.

With a new ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ series as well as a new ‘Nova’ series on the way as well as Guardians appearing in a recent episode of ‘Avengers: Earths Mightiest Heroes’ and Nova having a recurring role in ‘Ultimate Spider-Man’…this announcement comes at no shock to me. But definitely has me excited more than some of the previously rumored movies that we would be seeing next. We better see some Star-Lord though or I fear Scott Alminiana may stab someone.

It’s not a suprise. After the news of Marvel filling trademarks for ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ it was obvious it was coming. But according to Latino Review (who has been pretty reliable about Marvel Studios news)…it’s coming a lot sooner than we thought. Kevin Fiege has been talking some time now about doing a space epic and now it’s coming.

For those unfamiliar with ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’, the comic first appeared in 1969 and was resurrected in 2008. The story centers on a group of alien beings in the 31st century who are each the last of their kind. They eventually travel back in time and interact with 20th century Marvel characters which would most likely be how the movie would end and tie into ‘The Avengers 2’.

It’s reported that we will get an official announcement at the Marvel Studios panel during San Diego Comic-Con in two weeks. We are also told to expect Nova and that the script is “incredible” and will lead up to ‘The Avengers 2’ in 2015. Oh and is Thanos in it? Yes. Yes he is.

Could they be going against the government? The Punisher?! I’m calling it as The Punisher based on these teasers. Guess we will have to wait and find out at Comic-Con.

The movie may have been out for awhile now but the viral campaign for ‘Prometheus’ seems nowhere close to being done. First we had the post credit flash leading to people wondering “What is 10.11.12?” And now it seems Weyland Industries will have a presence at San Diego Comic Con.

Project Prometheus

Could this be similar to what Marvel did last year with recruiting S.H.I.E.L.D. agents? Does this tie-in with 10.11.12 in some way? Why is there even more questions even after the movie?! Damn you Ridley Scott. Color me intrigued.

Today The Walking Dead Escape website went live giving us geeks an idea of what the AMC hit has in store for SDCC this year.

The show will be renting out the Padre Stadium in downtown San Diego and will be turning areas of the park into a zombie obstacle course. Attendees will be able to choose from three different roles. A survivor running from zombies. A zombie chasing survivors or Spectator. Me being in the peak psychical condition I am, I wouldn’t want to give the other people a unfair game so I will be watching from the side.

So for $70 bucks more on top of the already expensive ass Comic Con adventure you can get all sweaty OUTSIDE of the convention center.

Check out the official site for more details.

This weekend we will see the release of The Avengers. It’s a great time to be a geek right now. Just ten years ago no one would have guessed we’d live in a world where superhero films were acceptable to the point that not only was there an Avengers film but Thor, Iron Man and discussions on Dr. Strange and Antman.

Bizarrely enough, Mark Hamill predicted these changes back in 2004. In his direct-to-DVD mockumentry Comic Book: The Movie Mark plays Donald Swan, a history teacher/comic shop owner and in charge of the official fan club for Commander Courage. Due to the popularity of the Spider-Man movie a major studio is making a film on Commander Courage (inspired obviously by Captain America) and have hired Donald as a creative consultant.

However since September 11th they’ve decided to update Commander Courage from a Nazi fighting patriot into a Terrorist killing soldier named Codename Courage. Donald hates this change where they’ve made Courage more modern, edgy, took away his secret Identity and changed his sidekick Liberty Lad into the sexy Liberty Lass.

The studio gives Donald an opportunity to film a documentary about the Codename: Commander announcement at Comic Con, while Donald tries to use this opportunity to prove to the studio that they should make a Commander Courage film that’s a period piece with him fighting nazis.

The film is amusing enough to kill an hour and a half but what’s far more impressive is how Hamill nailed the future of Comic Con before it occurred. The movie executive going with Donald to the Con could careless about the comics or the fans of the character. He just wants to show up, make an announcement and leave.

Mark also takes this opportunity to write a true love letter to fandom. He captures the entire comic con experience with plenty of cos-players, screaming Troma characters, lots of free stuff and the parents keeping their kids awake to ensure they don’t miss any panels. Donald gives a passionate speech about how his favorite aspect of fandom is the passionate arguments between trivial things like “How’s better Gray or Green Hulk”.

The film doesn’t always hit but it does have it’s moments. The cast is basically made up of voice actors and celebrity cameos (including Stan Lee, Hugh Hefner and Kevin Smith). Kevin Smith parodies his infamous Superman Script incident discussing how his first draft of Commander Courage the studio demanded a Giant Mechanical Spider and also has the line “Nazis are better than terrorists, they have an easier to make fun of accent”.

Donald Swan even discusses how much better Pearl Harbor would be had it been a Commander Courage film. But the funniest character in the film and scene stealer is Ricky the Camera Guy played by Jess Harnell (Animaniacs). Ricky is a rocker/stoner who just wants to meet the Hulk while at comic con. Donald takes him under his wing to try to teach him how beautiful the world of Comic Con truly is.

The film didn’t get much critical review due to being a Direct-To-DVD film, however the fan ratings on rottentomatoes averaged out to a pitiful 38%. The fact is the film is made for a very specific person (a comic book fan), you need to understand this world to appreciate this world. With that in mind, watch this before seeing the Avengers.

Comic Book: The Movie is currently available on Netflix Instant Watch

When he’s not watching straight to DVD movies Matt can be found tweeting, writing in his blog Pure Mattitude and hosting is podcast The Saint Mort Show.

And so another year of trying to get San Diego Comic Con tickets has begun, and ended. A few days ago this geek, along with every other geek who signed up for “pre-registration” at Comic Con, received an email notifying us that tickets would officially go on sale at 8:00 AM PST on March 3rd. The email included a link for ticket purchases but informed users that it would not be active until 8:00 AM when ticket sales started. Not wanting to miss out on yet another year of Comic Con I set my alarm for 7:45 AM so that I could be ready to get my place in the EPIC waiting room. Although to be fair, there was nothing ‘epic’ to be found in that room.

At precisely 8:00 AM PST, I clicked the link… but nothing happened. Refresh, still nothing, close the browser and try again, still nothing. This continued for the next few minutes with my rage slowly building and flashbacks to last year’s Leap Frog ticket sales disaster running through my mind. After finally just going to Comic Con’s website I was able to get in the waiting room and started the wait with my place being around #35000 in line. Every few minutes the browser would automatically update with my place in line slowly dwindling down. Around the time I became #25000 in line the 4 day passes had all been sold out. ‘That’s okay’ I thought, as long as I can go for 2 or 3 days I’ll be happy. Time slowly passed and so did the number of tickets. After being in the waiting room for about an hour and getting down to #3000 I was informed that ALL tickets were sold out. NO WAY CAN THIS BE HAPPENING. No, not now, not again this year!!!! I was James T. Kirk screaming “Connnnnnnnnnnn!!!!” from the rooftops. My quest for Comic Con had come to an end; and this geek was one sad panda.

As it turns out, that link that was in the email was a dead link and many a geek/nerd are bitching about this in various online forums as I write this. More tickets might go on sale at a later date according to the Con website, but I imagine those will be far and few between. Once again, Comic Con International has managed to mess up the ticket sale process. Oh, and it should be noted that whomever runs their website doesn’t know the difference between ‘their’ and ‘there’. Looks like it’s time to prepare my “will work for Comic Con tickets” sandwich sign for when I go to Wonder Con. The next step after that of course is taking a page out of the IMF playbook and pulling some espionage-type shenanigans trying to get into Comic Con. I’ll keep you posted…
