Back in January of 2017 we featured Jason Inman, Ashley Victoria Robinson, and Ben Matsuya’s Jupiter Jet in a Crowdfund This column.

The project ended up clearing over 180% of its Kickstarter goal, and the first volume of Jupiter Jet was even nominated for a Ringo award for Best Kids Comic or Graphic Novel.

Naturally, a single volume of the celebrated series wasn’t enough for fans, and today Jason, Ashley, and Ben (and publisher Action Labs) have finally unveiled a new crowdfunding campaign for a 120-page Jupiter Jet volume 2, Jupiter Jet and the Forgotten Radio!

The Kickstarter campaign for the new volume has only just launched, and features tons of goodies for new and old fans of Jupiter Jet. The creative trio is looking for a cool $17,500 to fund the book, and if early pledges are any indication, Juper Jet and the Forgotten Radio should fly past its goal very quickly.

Robinson notes that a “book about space lizards, asteroid belt chases, and fighting with your family, combines three things I love reading the most. Bringing some of my favorite things to one of my favorite characters I’ve created has been such a blast,” and having had an opportunity to read the first 20 pages of the book, her passion for the project (and Inman’s and Matsuya’s of course) seeps across every panel.

Described as Kim Possible crossed with A Fistful of Dollars (two IP’s that I never imagined would be mentioned together), Jupiter Jet and the Forgotten Radio is:

One girl’s journey on the brink of adulthood to remind herself that the world will always be bigger than you think and that your parents aren’t always perfect. Jupiter Jet and the Forgotten Radio celebrates the confidence that comes on the precipice of adulthood and the hard lessons we learn when we don’t know everything – and introduces a brand new jetpack!

Just like last time around, there are some amazing rewards available for backers. These include exclusive early copies of the book with cover art by Spawn’s Jonboy Meyers, prints from Nicola Scott (Earth 2), and b2rianls (painter Brian Lopez who Ashley also collaborated with on Aurora and the Eagle), and incredibly, script and portfolio critiques by industry professionals including: Steve Lieber (Superman’s Pal: Jimmy Olsen, Detective Comics), Mitch Gerads (Mister Miracle, Batman), and David Booher (Canto, Alien Bounty Hunter).

There’s a lot to love about Jupiter Jet — take a look at the Jupiter Jet and the Forgotten Radio Kickstarter video below, and head to the official Kickstarter campaign page for more information, and to back this fantastic project!

Can’t get enough of Jason or Ashley? Ashley was just a guest on one of Geekscape’s newest podcast’s, My Favourite Episode Of, and Jason was on Geekscape this past Summer!

This is a phenomenal looking book from a fantastic team, and we can’t wait to read it!

Yeah, we’re a little biased due to the fact that our pals Jason Inman and Ashley Victoria Robinson are a part of this high-flying, all-ages adventure, but the book also looks (and sounds) damned cool.

Jason is the host of DC Comics All Access, podcast Geek History Lesson and more, while Ashley is a  Top Cow Talent Hunt winner turned Head Editor (“Apollo IX #1”, “Witchblade #175”). Both of them co-wrote a multitude of episodes of popular webseries The Red Shirt Diaries.

The duo, along with artist Ben Matsuya (Criminal Macabre) have teamed up to create a 5 issue mini series through that stars a spunky teenage girl with a jetpack, her genius mechanic brother and a bad guy who wants to end the crusade of the “flying girl”!

The book’s called Jupiter Jet, and it follows the origin story of the eponymous superhero as she must find a way to balance her Robin Hood-esque activities, support the family repair shop and keep her secret identity – Jacky Johnson – out of the hands of the mobsters that are always on their
trail … and the mysterious man who controls them all.

It sounds incredibly fun, and it looks great. Naturally, based on the ‘Crowdfund This’ prefix of this article, the team needs some help if this fantastic idea is set to come to fruition. Book one has already been written and drawn, but that leaves four more issues in the story, and the team is looking for a cool $14,500 to make everything happen.

The team notes that “money earned will go to covering fees, production, postage, and printing of the collection. Any leftover money will be used to pay for new artwork that will be used in the series…maybe some back-ups by other creators? Variant covers? All money will go back into the book, period. The first goal of this campaign is to give our readers a high-quality product.” They even created a sweet pie chart that breaks things down:

The project just launched this morning, and at the time of writing, it’s already raised an impressive 27% of its goal.

There are some fantastic backer rewards up for grabs with this one, including copies of the book (digital or physical), social media follows, sweet prints, original pages, portfolio reviews, lunch with the creators (and Jon Schnepp) and even more.

You can take a look at some slick preview pages below (along with the Kickstarter video). Head here to check out the Kickstarter campaign (and back, of course), and be sure to share the project with your friends! These are some amazing creators with a great idea, so let’s help them out any way that we can!

We’re talking comics this week with Zack Kaplan, the writer of Top Cow’s newest book ‘Eclipse’, a near future sci-fi story in which sunlight has become lethal to humans! Zack and I discuss the origins of the story, his long history as a poker player (and dealer!) and why you should pick this book up NOW! We also discuss some highlights of Stan Lee’s LA Comic Con, our impressions of the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ trailer and look forward to the big Nintendo reveal plus trailers for ‘Logan’ and ‘Red Dead Redemption 2’!

Today marks the launch of Machinima’s latest internet-breaking video Enormous, based on the comic book series by Tim Daniel and Mehdi Cheggour. The story, based in a world where giant kaiju-like monsters have devastated modern civilization, takes it’s cues more from human survival stories like The Walking Dead than big monster spectacles like Godzilla or Pacific Rim.

That’s not to say that Enormous isn’t without its huge monsters, as you’ll see if you watch the first video based on the series right here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_eq3tCdal2M

One of the people behind bringing Enormous to the online space is Geekscape friend and past guest Adrian Askarieh, Producer of the series and the man responsible for discovering the property while walking a Con floor! We had ourselves a little chat about Enormous (and the upcoming Hitman film Agent 47) and here’s what he had to say about everything:

Okay, I know the story, but why don’t you tell the Geekscapists: how did you get involved in Enormous? How’d you discover it?

I was walking the floor at Comic-Con in 2012 on Preview Night and ran right up onto the Image Comics booth which had this wonderfully unique looking large format graphic novel. After 5 minutes of thumbing through it, I had promised its creator, Tim Daniel, that I would be making it into a high-end digital series within two years.  Who says that deals don’t happen at Comic-Con anymore?!

At what point did Machinima get involved?

As for Machinima, I was a big fan of what they were  doing and how they were branding themselves with the “Lost Boys” generation of males 16-34. They were my one-and-only choice to partner with. To their credit, they backed us all the way even though this fell a bit outside of their branded video game adaptations.

Why is the web space the right place to launch something like this? What advantages does it give you over traditional media like TV or film?

The upside is incredibly high if you stick with the model. More people have immediate access to content on the Web than on any other format. We felt that the Web was a great launching point for something as ambitious as Enormous simply because it would stand out because if its scope, and hopefully find a life of it’s own.

enormous_billy_miller_3

Creatively, how do you separate a property like this from Godzilla? How are they different and where do you see Enormous going?

Other than having giant monsters in it, Enormous is as different from Godzilla as Superman is from Thor.  It spiritually shares more attributes with shows like Lost and The Walking Dead.

So what are some of your favorite post-pocalyptic or kaiju stories? Were you a fan of those kinds of properties before discovering Enormous?

Yes and no. I loved the original Godzilla and King Kong Vs Godzilla but never really had the opportunity to delve fully into the whole Kaiju genre. But in a way I think that gives Enormous an advantage in terms of incorporating an outsider’s perspective. In terms of “post-apocalyptic” fare, the original Mad Max and Road Warrior are among my favorites.

Well, don’t leave us hanging after this first one! How many episodes do you guys have prepped, shot or written?

We have the rough outline for 9 more. But it will grow from there.

As video game fans, what can you tell us about Agent 47? Is this going to make Rupert Friend a household name?

We are only in our 4th week of production here in Berlin and it is way too early for me to talk about it.  All I will say is that we all believe that we are making a good movie. As for Rupert, we could not be happier with what he is doing with the character.

Thanks, Adrian. Come back on Geekscape when you return from filming! In the meantime, we’ll make sure everyone here keeps watching Enormous (and why not!?! It has a giant monster in it)!

Briefly: Alongside the just-launched Rubicon prequel, Machinima has also debuted a poster and teaser trailer for next week’s launch of the Enormous pilot.

The adaptation of the Image comic was first announced back in November. Agent 47‘s Adrian Askarieh produced the short, which stars Steve Brand, Ceren Lee, Erica Gimpel, Garret Coffey, Billy Miller and Charles Melton, and was directed by BenDavid Grabinski.

I’ve had an opportunity to watch the full short, and I really think you’re all going to enjoy it. For now, take a look at the trailer and poster below, and let us know what you think! I sure hope that Machinima decides to continue this one!

The world as we know it has ended. A group of survivors on a mission now find themselves face to face with unspeakable dangers, some human and some…much bigger.

Find Kelley Green is a new independently published comic book by Sarah Banning. The story starts off with a girl who has been mysteriously attacked. Then young Wot is introduced going to Bramley Boarding School – the site of the attack! Wot’s father also attended Bramley but has recently disappeared. The only connection Wot has to his father is through a special book titled Find Kelley Green which his uncle and his father thought was real when they were young. This proves to be more than Wot expected when two strange creatures suddenly appear! What are they and where did they come from? Another student at the boarding school, Lettie, has a weird encounter as well. Lettie does not fit in with her peers because she is a bit too smart for her own good and her interests are rather unusual. What is the peculiar creature that shows up in Lettie’s room and what does it want?

Kelley6

The story and pacing are well written. It is an engaging mystery that makes you extremely curious to know what happens next, what are the creatures, and how was the little girl hurt? The text bubbles are easy to read and the font has a Disney-esque quality. Find Kelley Green is an all ages comic book that both kids and adults can enjoy. It has just the right amount of mystery and creepiness that kids can follow but will entertain adults. The art style is whimsical with identifiable characters, saturated colors and an almost soft sketch-like quality. Wot appears small and vulnerable wearing his father’s old sweater which is much too big on him. His large eyes convey his bewilderment and uncertainty. Lettie’s confidence is amplified by her abundant curls (an ambitious choice successfully pulled off by Banning). I especially liked Lettie’s suspicious half squinty eyes and expressive eyebrows.

Kelley5

Find Kelley Green has monsters, mystery, adventure, and fun for all ages! The comic book is available for free on their website but you can also purchase it for only $4.95 (limited edition copy) and support indie comic books. You can also check out their twitter and facebook accounts for more info.

The conclusion of the first story arc of this hit new series! Unfortunately for Redmond, despite all his efforts to the contrary… nothing goes as planned.

Thief of Thieves #7
Story by Robert Kirkman & Nick Spencer
Art by Shawn Martinbrough & Felix Serrano

Issue number 100 of The Walking Dead had a print run of 380,000 copies and it’s already sold out. Having already broken one record becoming the best-selling comic book in initial orders for any publisher since 1997…could it be on the path to breaking even more records?

I spoke with a local shop owner who also owned one of the busiest booths at this years San Diego Comic-Con and he went on to state that the book was flying out of his hands at record numbers on the first two days alone and he was even selling the limited variant covers at a couple hundred dollars a pop.

I even decided to check out eBay and variants such as the one above are even cranking out averaging about $400 a piece. With such a high demand we could see this book going into multiple printings much faster than usual. With this many copies sold in just one week since its release this issue could very well be on the path to breaking even more records and setting a very high bar.

This weekend we will see the release of The Avengers. It’s a great time to be a geek right now. Just ten years ago no one would have guessed we’d live in a world where superhero films were acceptable to the point that not only was there an Avengers film but Thor, Iron Man and discussions on Dr. Strange and Antman.

Bizarrely enough, Mark Hamill predicted these changes back in 2004. In his direct-to-DVD mockumentry Comic Book: The Movie Mark plays Donald Swan, a history teacher/comic shop owner and in charge of the official fan club for Commander Courage. Due to the popularity of the Spider-Man movie a major studio is making a film on Commander Courage (inspired obviously by Captain America) and have hired Donald as a creative consultant.

However since September 11th they’ve decided to update Commander Courage from a Nazi fighting patriot into a Terrorist killing soldier named Codename Courage. Donald hates this change where they’ve made Courage more modern, edgy, took away his secret Identity and changed his sidekick Liberty Lad into the sexy Liberty Lass.

The studio gives Donald an opportunity to film a documentary about the Codename: Commander announcement at Comic Con, while Donald tries to use this opportunity to prove to the studio that they should make a Commander Courage film that’s a period piece with him fighting nazis.

The film is amusing enough to kill an hour and a half but what’s far more impressive is how Hamill nailed the future of Comic Con before it occurred. The movie executive going with Donald to the Con could careless about the comics or the fans of the character. He just wants to show up, make an announcement and leave.

Mark also takes this opportunity to write a true love letter to fandom. He captures the entire comic con experience with plenty of cos-players, screaming Troma characters, lots of free stuff and the parents keeping their kids awake to ensure they don’t miss any panels. Donald gives a passionate speech about how his favorite aspect of fandom is the passionate arguments between trivial things like “How’s better Gray or Green Hulk”.

The film doesn’t always hit but it does have it’s moments. The cast is basically made up of voice actors and celebrity cameos (including Stan Lee, Hugh Hefner and Kevin Smith). Kevin Smith parodies his infamous Superman Script incident discussing how his first draft of Commander Courage the studio demanded a Giant Mechanical Spider and also has the line “Nazis are better than terrorists, they have an easier to make fun of accent”.

Donald Swan even discusses how much better Pearl Harbor would be had it been a Commander Courage film. But the funniest character in the film and scene stealer is Ricky the Camera Guy played by Jess Harnell (Animaniacs). Ricky is a rocker/stoner who just wants to meet the Hulk while at comic con. Donald takes him under his wing to try to teach him how beautiful the world of Comic Con truly is.

The film didn’t get much critical review due to being a Direct-To-DVD film, however the fan ratings on rottentomatoes averaged out to a pitiful 38%. The fact is the film is made for a very specific person (a comic book fan), you need to understand this world to appreciate this world. With that in mind, watch this before seeing the Avengers.

Comic Book: The Movie is currently available on Netflix Instant Watch

When he’s not watching straight to DVD movies Matt can be found tweeting, writing in his blog Pure Mattitude and hosting is podcast The Saint Mort Show.

The next DC Comics superhero to join Cartoon Network’s DC Comics-based DC Nation block will be: the Dark Knight. It’s been too long without a “Batman” presence on television. Anyway, “Beware the Batman” will be a CGI show and feature obscure or relatively new rogues such as Anarky, Professor Pyg, Magpie and Mister Toad. Besides the villains, “Beware the Batman” will put sword-wielding DC Comics heroine Katana in the role of Batman’s sidekick, having previously appeared in the great “Batman: The Brave and the Bold.” Created by Mike W. Barr and Jim Aparo, the sword-wielding Tatsu Yamashiro has a comic book history with Batman that goes all the way back to the beloved 1980s series The Outsiders, and recently joined the Gotham-based Birds of Prey as part of DC’s New 52 initiative. In addition to Katana, Batman will also have his gun-toting ex-secret agent/butler Alfred on hand to assist him. “Beware the Batman” wasn’t expected to hit airwaves until 2013, but the show will now hit Cartoon Network later this year at an unknown date, possibly in time for “The Dark Knight Rises” or quite possibly after, maybe?
