I stated back in my review for the fantastic Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze that “with exclusives like Super Mario 3D World, The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD, Pikmin 3, The Wonderful 101, Lego City Undercover, and not to mention the still-coming-this-year Smash Bros. and Mario Kart 8 (just to name a few), you shouldn’t really need another reason to pick up a Wii U.”

Well, we’re finally on the eve of Mario Kart 8‘s anticipated release, and as expected, it’s simply another reason for you to own this console. I’ve been playing the game extensively for a few weeks now, and I absolutely can’t put the thing down. I even picked up Ubisoft’s fun yet flawed (and don’t even get me started on the broken promises) Watch Dogs on Tuesday, which I put a few good hours into… before turning it off and jumping right back into Mario Kart 8. It’s gorgeous, it’s smooth, it’s addicting as hell, and it’s the most fun I’ve had playing a video game so far this year.

The game remains fundamentally similar to its seven (yes, there has been that many) fantastic predecessors, but every aspect of the title has been tuned and retuned to produce the slickest and fastest racing game this side of F-Zero. A steady stream of unlocks keeps you saying ‘just one more cup’, as a multitude of new characters, car unlocks, stamps, and more come at a steady pace. There are some absolutely hilarious car/wheel/glider combinations that had me laughing every single time I used them, and each unlocked part can really change things up. You’ll definitely want to try out every combination, as the vehicle you think is the ‘best’ may feel even better once you change its wheels.

MK81

Some welcome changes have also made the cut. Gone are the frustrating days of a rival racer loading up on six red shells, as an item now stays in your inventory until they’re completely consumed. This also means that you can’t hold a single shell or banana at your back in order to pick up another item, you have to use what you have before you can grab something else. Honestly, I don’t understand how it took eight iterations to make this change, but it’s definitely a case of better late than never. The game’s biggest addition lies in the neat anti-gravity mode added to most (if not all) of its tracks. Many levels have twists, turns, and entire sections (going up a gigantic waterfall, and then back down for instance) that would be impossible to traverse in a regular vehicle, so in these areas your wheels turn sideways, your traction is reduced, and you regularly find yourself completely upside down. Skilled players can utilize extra speed boosts in these sections by bouncing off of opponents, but it’s definitely a risk/reward move, as you may find yourself instead flying off of the track.

The changes to Battle Mode, however, are changes that I could have gone without. There’s nothing inherently wrong the the new version, but instead of specifically designed, symmetrical battle tracks, you’re speeding through altered versions of the games racetracks. Rather than fighting each other until all balloons are lost, the default setting has you fighting for three minutes. The winner is not the last character standing, but simply the one that has collected the most balloons at the end of the time limit. It’s still fun, but it can’t shake a stick at the classic battle mode, and acts as more of a distraction than a full-fledged ‘let’s go play’ battle mode.

Nintendo has also added a trio of new items to this version, and all three of them quickly rose to sit among my favourites. The Boomerang Flower acts similarly to a green shell; it emerges straight in front of (or behind) you and flies in a straight line along the track… except it’s a boomerang, so it comes back to you. You get three throws with the item, and it can take out opponents as it travels in either direction. It’s great to see the boomerang fly past an opponent (especially a human one), only for it to collide with their character as it returns. Next up is the Piranha Plant, which gobbles up everything in front of you when it’s active, and I mean everything. It’ll grab coins, take out opponents, grab banana peels, shells, etc, making you nearly invulnerable for the time that it’s active. Then there’s the Super Horn, which nets you one use, and basically blows everything that surrounds your character when activated away from you. This includes banana peels, other racers trying to catch a draft, and it’ll also get rid of that pesky (and previously impossible to avoid) blue shell if timed right. I’ve never felt more badass than I did the first time I got rid of the blue shell in this manner… which is probably a testament to how much of a loser I am.

MK82

As expected, Mario Kart 8 looks and sounds phenomenal too. The game runs at 720p at a locked 60 frames-per-second (30 in three or four player split-screen multiplayer, but more on that later), and even though it doesn’t come close to the magical, anything-less-is-crap 1080p, it’s probably the best looking game I’ve played in some time. The vibrant, colourful artstyle of the the tracks, characters, and karts lend themselves so well to the upgraded visuals, that it’s impossible to think that this isn’t an astonishingly beautiful title. It’s said nearly every time Nintendo releases another gem for the Wii U, but Mario Kart 8 is the best looking game that the company has released.

I’m happy to say that each and every one of Mario Kart 8‘s 32 tracks (16 new and 16 refreshed retro levels) are welcome additions. You’ll race through every terrain imaginable, in a variety of new and familiar locations, and you’ll love every freaking second of it. Whether it’s a completely redone Donut Plains 3 (complete with previously mentioned anti-gravity sections) or the new Rainbow Road, there simply isn’t a dud in the entire bunch. They look fantastic from every angle, which you’ll see in the game’s new ‘Highlight Reel’ after every race. The quick (~20 second) reel shows you some of the coolest things that happened in each race, and you’ll probably spend way too much time watching these in silky smooth slow motion. You can even edit and share these reels on YouTube. It’s probably the only replay mode in any racing game ever that I’ve actually spent some time with.

My favourite part of Mario Kart 8 is the feature that other developers and consoles have all but forgotten: split-screen multiplayer. I only own one controller for my Playstation 4 and Xbox One, and that’s a fact that likely will never change. Local multiplayer on other consoles is so rare that it simply doesn’t make sense to own additional controllers (especially at the price of controllers these days). On the Wii U however, I’ve played through New Super Mario Bros. U, Super Mario 3D World, and now Mario Kart 8 (among other games) with three friends by my side, as in, on the same couch. I’m so happy that the conversation is “Hey, do you guys want to come over and play Mario Kart” rather than “Hey, do you guys want to come over and take turns playing Mario Kart.” Two players can head online at once (the game features 12-player online multiplayer, which I can’t wait to get more time with), but the shining star here is the four-player split-screen. Yep. Four-players, at the same time, on the same console. The game dips to 30 frames-per-second when you’re playing with three or four players, but it still looks great, and it still plays just as well as I’ve spent the last 1200 words describing. You’ll have access to every cup, track, and battle, all while sitting in the same room as your friends.

MK83

Mario Kart 8 is a beautiful, insanely fun racer that is far and away worth picking up a Wii U for. As if the game wasn’t already worth the cost (it is, and more), buying and registering the title on Club Nintendo before July 31st will get you another game FOR FREE. We’ve had a lot of great gaming experiences thus far in 2014, but as mentioned, Mario Kart 8 is the most fun I’ve had playing a video game this year.

Pros and Cons / TL;DR :

+ Phenomenal local multiplayer.

+ Gorgeous graphics, great soundtrack.

+ New items are welcome additions.

+ Great mix of tracks.

+ Antigravity.

– New Battle Mode is lame compared to old Battle Mode.

– Online is a step in the right direction for Nintendo, but still too limited.

– I’m not playing it right now.

Final Score: 4.5/5

Briefly: Jurassic World is just over one year away from theatres at this point, and last week major setting and plot details from the film leaked online. Nobody knew what to believe, but director Colin Trevorrow has just officially revealed plot details from Jurassic World.

In a just-published interview with SlashFilm, director Colin Trevorrow has detailed the plot of Jurassic World, stating that “Jurassic World takes place in a fully functional park on Isla Nublar. It sees more than 20,000 visitors every day. You arrive by ferry from Costa Rica. It has elements of a biological preserve, a safari, a zoo, and a theme park. There is a luxury resort with hotels, restaurants, nightlife and a golf course. And there are dinosaurs. Real ones. You can get closer to them than you ever imagined possible. It’s the realization of John Hammond’s dream, and I think you’ll want to go there.”

He continues, revealing that the film will take place more than two decades after Jurassic Park. He speaks of two main ideas that came to light when deciding the film’s setting:

One was that money has been the gasoline in the engine of our biggest mistakes. If there are billions to be made, no one can resist them, even if they know things could end horribly.

The other was that our relationship with technology has become so woven into our daily lives, we’ve become numb to the scientific miracles around us. We take so much for granted.

Those two ideas felt like they could work together. What if, despite previous disasters, they built a new biological preserve where you could see dinosaurs walk the earth…and what if people were already kind of over it? We imagined a teenager texting his girlfriend with his back to a T-Rex behind protective glass. For us, that image captured the way much of the audience feels about the movies themselves. “We’ve seen CG dinosaurs. What else you got?” Next year, you’ll see our answer.

There are some other great revelations here, so be sure to read the full interview over at SlashFilm. It really sounds like Trvorrow and the team are trying to turn the franchise around, and I really can’t wait to see what they come up with.

Are you looking forward to Jurassic World? Be sure to let us know! The film hits theatres on July 12th, 2015.

Briefly: This is very cool.

Hugh Jackman has definitely grown into the Wolverine role over the years. He was badass in the first X-Men, but most would agree that he fits the character even better now.

Want to see his audition tape? Yeah you do. It features plenty of dialogue from the final film (as well as a bunch that didn’t make it), and it also makes us realize that X-Men hit theatres nearly 15 years ago (I was only 9).

Take a look at the video below, and let us know how old it makes you feel.

Briefly: We’ve seen tons (and tons) of tiny teasers, but the first actual footage from FX’s The Strain has just hit the web.

The Strain is a high-concept thriller that tells the story of Dr. Ephraim Goodweather (Stoll), the head of the Center for Disease Control Canary Team in New York City. He and his team are called upon to investigate a mysterious viral outbreak with hallmarks of an ancient and evil strain of vampirism. As the strain spreads, Eph, his team, and an assembly of everyday New Yorkers wage war for the fate of humanity itself.

The footage looks great, and we really can’t wait to see more. Take a look at The Strain teaser below, and let us know what you think! The series premieres on July 13th!

Briefly: It was barely three weeks ago that NBC broke our hearths with the cancellation of Community, one season and one movie shy of the series’ end goal.

Fans, of course, didn’t give up, and instead flooded Netflix and Hulu with requests to bring the show up. Weeks have passed, actors started moving on, and no announcements were made… but now there may be a glimmer of hope.

Deadline has learned that Sony (Community‘s owner) and Hulu have entered ‘preliminary’ talks to develop another season of the cult comedy. Hulu has just expressed interest in expanding their original content offerings, and this would be an absolutely incredible addition.

We’ll be sure to keep you updated as we learn more, but Human Beings, don’t lose hope yet. Do however, let us know how excited you’d be if this was picked up.

Briefly: Former showrunner Drew Goddard left the project this past weekend (leaving it in the capable hands of Steven S. DeKnight), but Marvel and Netflix’s Daredevil has just found its star.

Stardust and Boardwalk Empire actor Charlie Cox has been cast as Matt Murdock in the series, which will span 13 episodes and premiere on Netflix in 2015.

Netflix and Marvel are also developing series’ based on Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and Iron Fist, but Daredevil will be the first to launch. We’ll be sure to keep you updated as we learn more.

What are your thoughts on Cox in the role? Is there an actor you’d rather have seen in the series? Ben Affleck, right? Sound out below!

Briefly: Just last month it was announced that a third Sharknado is already in the works, and now SyFy has announced its first ever Sharknado Week.

Clearly a play on Discovery’s insanely popular Shark Week (which begins on August 10th), Sharknado Week will begin on July 26th and run through August 2nd. Sharknado 2‘s highly anticipated premiere will fall on July 30th.

According to Variety, other content will include “Mega Shark vs. Mecha Shark,” “Sharkmania: The Top 15 Biggest Baddest Bloodiest Bites” and “Sharktopus vs. Pteracuda.”

Will you be checking in to Sharknado Week? Are you looking forward to the sequel’s premiere? Sound out below, and if you’re looking for more Sharknado, check out Geekscape #299, featuring Sharknado screenwriter Thunder Levin.

Briefly: Warner Bros. has just debuted an awesome new featurette for next week’s Edge of Tomorrow.

The HUGE 13 minute long video is narrated by both Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt, and it goes much deeper (almost too deep) into the plot than we’ve seen in any previous videos. We also see some of the fantastic production (including the heavy suits), and it’s definitely worth watching through to the end. I wasn’t overly excited for the film when the first trailer released, but after seeing this, I can’t wait to get in line.

Take a look at the video below (which also contains a ton of new footage), and let us know what you think! Edge of Tomorrow hits theatres on June 6th!

The epic action of “Edge of Tomorrow” unfolds in a near future in which an alien race has hit the Earth in an unrelenting assault, unbeatable by any military unit in the world.

Lt. Col. Bill Cage (Cruise) is an officer who has never seen a day of combat when he is unceremoniously dropped into what amounts to a suicide mission. Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop—forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again…and again.

But with each battle, Cage becomes able to engage the adversaries with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski (Blunt). And, as Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated encounter gets them one step closer to defeating the enemy.

Briefly: We’re still trying to 100% Lego Marvel Super Heroes, and now Traveller’s Tales has revealed the next game in the Lego Batman series.

It’s called Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham, and it takes the caped crusader far beyond the borders of the city… and into space. The game has Batman and over 150 other DC characters taking on the likes of Brainiac and the Legion of Doom.

The trailer is hilarious, showing off a brooding Bats, and a Superman that just won’t shut up. Take a look at the video below, and let us know if you’ll be picking this one up. Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham hits Xbox One, Xbox 360 PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, Wii U, Nintendo 3DS and Windows PC this Fall!

Briefly: It almost seems as though we’ve seen more delays than AAA game releases this year, and that trend is set to continue with two announcements today.

First up, Bethesda has pushed Shinji Mikami’s anticipated The Evil Within by two months, stating that “Shinji Mikami and his team at Tango Gameworks have asked for additional time to further balance and refine the game in order to deliver the polished, terrifying pure survival horror experience they set out to create.” The game will now release in October.

http://youtu.be/Zc-jvqJV4SI

Next up, gorgeous-looking PS4 exclusive The Order: 1886 has been pushed to early 2015. Ready At Dawn’s delay announcement was much more subtle, hidden among the text of a Playstation Blog post detailing the latest info on the shooter.

Which game were you most looking forward to? Are you disappointed in the delays, or would you rather have a better finished product?

Briefly: Since X-Men: Days of Future Past hit theatres on Friday, essentially erasing and re-writing the X-Men film franchise, we’ve all been wondering whether or not Days was a swan song for the original X-Men cast, or if we’d be seeing them again in the next film, X-Men: Apocalypse (which Jon and Ian discuss at length, along with the rest of DoFP in the latest podcast).

In an interview with The Daily Beast, screenwriter and producer Simon Kinberg, he states that Apocalypse “will focus primarily on the First Class cast, but it will certainly have some of the original cast involved, too.”

It’s not much, but it’s something! Who would you like to see in the film? X-Men: Apocalypse hits theatres on May 26th, 2016!

I’d take a look at the full interview too, it’s pretty great.

Briefly: This looks bad ass.

Training Day, Shooter, and last year’s Olympus Has Fallen director Antoine Fuqua has reunited with Denzel Washington for The Equalizer. The movie tells the story of “McCall, a former black ops commando who has faked his death to live a quiet life in Boston.  When he comes out of his self-imposed retirement to rescue a young girl, Teri (Chloë Grace Moretz), he finds himself face to face with ultra-violent Russian gangsters. As he serves vengeance against those who brutalize the helpless, McCall’s desire for justice is reawakened. If someone has a problem, the odds are stacked against them, and they have nowhere else to turn, McCall will help.  He is The Equalizer.”

The film looks like a blast, and we’re big fans of the film’s director and cast, so we’ll definitely be lining up for this one. Take a look at the trailer below, and let us know if you’ll be joining us. The Equalizer hits theatres on September 26th!

Briefly: Just yesterday word broke out that director Edgar Wright had left Marvel’s Ant-Man over creative differences, and now it appears that Marvel has lost another director.

Latino-Review was the first to report the news, which was later confirmed by Variety, that Cabin in the Woods director Drew Goddard had departed the upcoming Netflix original Daredevil series. Goddard was set to write and direct the first episode in the miniseries, and also act as its showrunner. Instead, he’ll focus his attention on Sony’s Sinister Six film, which he is also set to write and direct.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer writer and Spartacus showrunner Steven S. DeKnight has taken the reigns on the project, which will premiere on Netflix in 2015.

How do you feel about Goddard’s departure? Are you still looking forward to the series? Sound out below!

Briefly: After what seems like forever, Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist is finally here.

The series takes “the audience back to the formative years of iconic characters Ryu and Ken as they live a traditional warrior’s life in secluded Japan. The boys are, unknowingly, the last practitioners of the ancient fighting style known as“Ansatsuken” (Assassin’s Fist). The series follows them as they learn about the mysterious past of their master, Gōken, and the tragic, dark legacy of the Ansatsuken style. Can their destiny be changed, or will history repeat itself?”

The series looks great, and I can’t wait until I get home from work so I can check it out in full. Be sure to check out our interview with director Joey Ansah here, and take a look at the series below.

Briefly: It’s been a long time coming, but Vol. 2 of Mark Waid’s Empire is almost here!

The new book will continue “the saga of Golgoth, a remorseless villain whose long-game plan of world domination finally won him the planet Earth and everything on it. While Golgoth’s reign in the first book was filled with challenges and conflicts – including a drug-induced plot again him by his own ministers, his innocent daughter’s troublesome aspirations, and the threat of extraterrestrial forces – Volume 2 opens with his grip on the world as strong as ever.

But where is his strength coming from? The sole loyalist who kept him anchored to humanity is one year gone, and on the anniversary of Golgoth’s loss, several seemingly coordinated new threats are surfacing around the globe. Each presents its own unique threat to the throne, and if Golgoth wants to maintain the crown, he will have to divide his forces–and his attentions–in dangerous new ways.”

The book will be available exclusively on ThrillBent, a service that boasts a myriad of awesome comic book content for a cool $3.99 per month subscription. The first piece of Vol. 2 hits ThrillBent on May 28th, and will continue twice monthly thereafter.

With art from co-creator Barry Kitson, as well as  Chris Sotomayor on colours and Troy Peteri on lettering, Empire should be worth the subscription alone. You can take a look at the cover art for Empire Vol. 2 below, and let us know what you think!

Briefly: Just two days ago Telltale debuted three new screenshots from The Wolf Among Us‘ next episode, In Sheep’s Clothing, and now we have the chapter’s release date(s).

Episode four will launch on May 27th for PS3, Windows, and OS X. It’ll hit Xbox 360 on May 28th, and iOS on May 29th. You can take a look at the new trailer for the game below, and be sure to let us know what you think of the game so far!

Briefly: We don’t now what this means for the just-announced sequel to Legendary’s Godzilla, but the film’s direct, Gareth Edwards, has just signed on to direct the 2016 Star Wars spinoff.

Here’s the announcement, straight from the official Star Wars website:

In addition to the episodes of a new Star Wars trilogy, Lucasfilm and Disney have begun development on multiple stand-alone movies that will offer new stories beyond the core Saga. Gareth Edwards will direct the first stand-alone film, with a screenplay by Gary Whitta. The film is due out December 16, 2016.

Gareth Edwards blazed into the filmmaking forefront with his acclaimed work on Monsters, a film he wrote, directed and served on as cinematographer and visual effects artist. The skill and vision readily apparent in Monsters earned him the high-profile spot directing this year’s smash hit Godzilla.

“Ever since I saw Star Wars I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life – join the Rebel Alliance! I could not be more excited and honored to go on this mission with Lucasfilm,” said Edwards.

Gary Whittas screenwriting credits include 2010s The Book of Eli starring Denzel Washington. He is also well known as a journalist and editor in the video game industry, as well as part of the BAFTA award-winning team on Telltale Games adaptation of The Walking Dead.

Whitta states, “From the moment I first saw the original movie as a wide-eyed kid, Star Wars has been the single most profound inspiration to my imagination and to my career as a writer. It is deeply special to me,so to be given the opportunity to contribute to its ongoing legacy, especially in collaboration with a film-maker as talented as Gareth,is literally a dream come true. I’m still pinching myself.”

Briefly: We covered it extensively at E3 last year, and now it’s nearly here: the release of Square Enix’s Murdered: Soul Suspect.

The game has been intriguing since its announcement, and it looks very cool from everything we’ve seen so far, but I’m really hoping that it doesn’t suffer the same fate as Beyond: Two Souls, which featured an insanely interesting plot and some great visuals, but boring you-can-barely-call-it-gameplay.

Square today released a 101 trailer for the game, which takes us through the basics of the plot, gameplay, and characters. It’s easy to see that there’s a lot of promise here, but early reactions to the non-finished product were decidedly ‘meh’. I’m hoping that things have improved for its retail release.

In any case, I’m all for new IP’s, so I’m looking forward to checking the game out. Murdered: Soul Suspect will hit PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC on June 3rd. Take a look at the trailer below, and let us know what you think!

Briefly: Marvel is already having a great year, but they’re not even close to being done with us (or our wallets) yet. Sure, we’ve got the fantastic-looking Guardians of the Galaxy hitting theatres this August, but Marvel and Disney have also teamed up to create the first Marvel animated feature from Disney: Big Hero 6.

The film is “an action comedy adventure about brilliant robotics prodigy Hiro Hamada, who finds himself in the grips of a criminal plot that threatens to destroy the fast-paced, high-tech city of San Fransokyo. With the help of his closest companion—a robot named Baymax—Hiro joins forces with a reluctant team of first-time crime fighters on a mission to save their city. Inspired by the Marvel comics of the same name, and featuring comic-book style action and all the heart and humor audiences expect from Walt Disney Animation Studios, the CG-animated “Big Hero 6″ hits theaters in 3D on November 7, 2014.”

You can take a look at the trailer below, and let us know if you’re looking forward to the film!

Briefly: Ah, it’s great to see some practical effects here.

The official Star Wars YouTube channel has just debuted the first video from the set of Episode VII, and it features something very cool in the background.

The video announces a contest that will give a fan a spot in the film, and also to promote awareness for the Star Wars UNICEF campaign. During the video, a cute looking alien walks through the background, and it’s a great first look at what Abrams and crew are up to right now in Abu Dhabi.

Take a look at the video below, and be sure to let us know what you think!

This is a pretty incredible story, and like most folks, it’s one I’ve never even heard of.

According to the Kickstarter campaign, “The Sultana disaster is one of the most horrific events in U.S. history and yet few are aware that it even occurred.  A Mississippi steamboat, the Sultana, exploded just north of Memphis, Tennessee in the early morning hours of April 27, 1865 killing over 1,800 souls.  The boat was overloaded with over 2,300 Union soldiers, newly released POW’s on their way back home after surviving the horrors of Civil War prison camps. This accident wasn’t only tragic because POW’s died on the way home; it’s not just tragic because greed-driven men squeezed well over 2,000 individuals onto a vessel licensed to carry 367 passengers; the Sultana disaster is tragic because it was covered up and, ultimately, forgotten. Greed, drama, and humanity make the Sultana a story to remember. Please help us remember the Sultana and raise this story from the depths of the Mississippi and into the hearts of people everywhere.”

This sounds absolutely insane to me. The boat should have only carried 367 people, but was loaded to over 2300. What.

Less than 2% of Americans have ever heard of the country’s greatest maritime disaster, and that’s something that Mark Marshall wants to change. He’s set out (along with Sean Astin, Jim Michaels, Matthew Egan, Leah Cevoli, Jeff Hoopingarner, Mark Alan Ray, and more) to tell the tale of the ill-fated ship, and “honor the victims of the Sultana by reaching as many people as possible with their story. This production will serve as a beacon of hope to establish the Sultana story in American history books across the nation. Our mission is to assist the Sultana Movement in establishing this event among the great tragedies of The Civil War. These were common men who were tested in battle, suffered in Confederate prison camps and survived, only to die within sight of home. They deserve to be remembered and honored by the nation they served.”

The campaign is making some great progress, and is currently sitting at $29, 740 of its $75, 000 goal. With 14 days left to raise funds, things our looking positive, but the team needs our help if the Sultana story is to be told. There are some fantastic rewards up for grabs, including wristbands, downloads, DVDs, Blu-Rays, shirts, autographs, producer credits, and much more.

You can take a look at the video for the Kickstarter campaign below, and head here to back the project!

Briefly: Finally, finally, finally, Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel sequel has an official title.

Briefly: It’s been some time since we’ve seen or heard anything from the Batman: Arkham Knight camp, but Warner Bros. Interactive has just debuted a new trailer for the game, featuring the first clips of gameplay, as well as letting us know just what’s going on in Gotham.

In Arkham Knight, Scarecrow returns to Gotham City with a scheme to unite the Rogues Gallery and destroy the Batman once and for all. As the citizens of Gotham flee and criminal gangs take control of the city, Batman evens the odds taking to the streets in the legendary Batmobile to ignite the fight that will decide the future of the city that he is sworn to protect.

You can take a look at the trailer below, and be sure to let us know what you think! Batman: Arkham Knight will launch on PS4, Xbox One, and PC this October!

Briefly: Godzilla would eat Gipsy Danger’s nuclear core right up, but this mashup was simply too cool not to share.

Even during my first watch of Godzilla on Thursday night, I had thoughts about how the monster would fit into the world of last year’s Pacific Rim. MOVIECLIPS Trailers took it one step (or a lot of steps) further, and actually mixed the two into a cool trailer.

It’s a neat watch, and it’s definitely thought-provoking too. What kind of Jaeger would we need to take on Legendary’s Godzilla? What category would Godzilla rank?

Have you seen Godzilla already? How did it stack up to Pacific Rim? Sound out below!

Briefly: This is just too cool.

TotalFilm has debuted some amazing performance capture footage for Matt Reeves’ Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. The clip features most of the film’s most prominent apes, as well as the performances of the actual actors involved. It’s absolutely mind-blowing footage, and I really, really can’t wait to see more.

Take a look at the clip below, and let us know what you think! Are you excited for the sequel? Sound out below!

A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth’s dominant species. Andy Serkis, celebrated for his performance in the last film, reprises his role as Caesar. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes also stars Jason Clarke (Zero Dark Thirty, Public Enemies, The Great Gatsby), Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight Rises, The Harry Potter film series), Keri Russell (The Americans, Mission Impossible III), Toby Kebbell (The Prince of Persia, Wrath of the Titans, Rock N Rolla), Kodi Smit-McPhee (Let Me In, ParaNorman), Enrique Murciano (Traffic, Black Hawk Down), Kirk Acevedo (The Thin Red Line) and Judy Greer (The Descendants, Three Kings, 13 Going on 30).

This, we did not expect.

Sadness was always an intriguing project. The game was one of the earliest announced for Nintendo’s Wii console (yes, Wii, not Wii U), and was to be a realistic survival/psychological horror title with black and white graphics that was set in pre WWI Ukraine.

The game was initially supposed to launch in Q4 of 2007, and a live-action concept trailer was released to garner excitement for the game. Here’s the trailer:

Oddly enough, the game was cancelled… without any gameplay footage ever being released. The original developer shut down, and Sadness disappeared. Oddly enough, the game has just been resurrected, and is targeting a 2016 for Wii U. NintendoLife caught up with HullBreach Studios’ Randy Freer and Jeremy Kleve of Cthulhi Games about the games resurrection.

You can head to NintendoLife for the full interview, but Randy stated that:

We’re here today to tell you that our two studios — HullBreach Studios and Cthulhi Games — are working together on bringing back the Sadness IP. Your readers are probably looking at their screens in disbelief. Quite understandable! I think we should let them blink a couple more times and let this sink in!

For anybody in your audience who isn’t familiar with us or who I am, surprise! I’m the IGN user Twiilight_Prince, who years ago (before starting HullBreach Studios with my brothers Daniel and Robert Gump) released the only three 100% real screenshots of Sadness thanks to Piotr Bielatowicz. I fought trolls for years, proving the game existed across the internet, while nIBRIS regrettably struggled in development with their Gamebryo programmers at Frontline and their graphics partner Digital Amigos, up until Sadness officially went vapor in 2010. Jeremy Kleve and myself have basically been unofficially involved in Sadness across the last 6 years in the background. I have to admit all those years of excitement is probably the foremost reason for me getting more involved in the video game industry today, without a doubt!

You can take a look at the only real screenshots from the Wii title below, and let us know if you’re interested in Sadness!

Briefly: After the insane conclusion of the last episode of Telltale’s The Wolf Among Us, we were itching for more content to sink our teeth into. Now, a month and a half has passed, and the developer has finally released the first screenshots for the game’s fourth episode, In Sheep’s Clothing.

The shots give us a look at a battered Bigby, a somber Snow White, and a dejected Narissa. If you know how the last episode ended (I won’t spoil things if not, but you should definitely be playing this game), you know exactly why everyone looks so down.

Once Telltale starts releasing screenshots, release dates (or at least their announcements) are typically soon to follow. Take a look at the shots below, and be on the lookout for more The Wolf Among Us news.

Cosplaying is something that I’ve always had an interest in, and I’m beginning to think that I’d like to take that interest even further. I put together a costume for this year’s Fan Expo Vancouver (check out my awesome experience at the Expo here) and was actually quite proud of my work. It was suggested that I share with you my experiences with making my first costume and just the act of cosplaying as well, so here we go!

I had decided (and had this decided for quite awhile before knowing I was going to a convention) that I would dress up as San from the Studio Ghibli film Princess Mononoke. Studio Ghibli films have always held a big ol’ spot in my heart as My Neighbour Totoro and Kiki’s Delivery Service were two of my favourite movies growing up. I would sometimes catch glimpses of Princess Mononoke when my older brother was watching, but I found it too scary back then and had a hard time getting through the whole thing. Okkoto (the white boar god) really freaked me out! Anyways, when I was older I watched Princess Mononoke myself and thought it was so awesome. I loved how it reflected our world and showed how destructive it really is against our beautiful forests and the animals that live there. The movie made me want to be like San, to live for the animals and to protect them from nasty humans. So, basically, I wanted my first cosplay to be something I related to and also just really liked the look of! I also thought it’d be a pretty simple costume to make (ha).

Mononoke

Making the costume was…interesting. I didn’t really have any sewing skills whatsoever. I mean, I could sew pieces of fabric together but it never looked nice and I lose motivation very quickly if I feel like I’m failing at something, however, I was determined to cosplay at the upcoming Fan Expo, so I went for it anyways.

I didn’t think I could sew up my own dress at this point so I decided to go to the thrift store in hopes to find a navy blue dress that could easily be altered to look like San’s. I did end up finding one, but it ended up being the most uncomfortable article of clothing I had ever put on, therefore it just wouldn’t work. Thankfully I realized I had a long navy dress sitting in a bag of hand-me-down clothes in my closet. The dress being a little on the large side, made tailoring it to fit my body a lot of “fun”. In the end it all worked out and was also super comfortable! The white over shirt/apron that goes over the blue dress was just a plain white t-shirt I found at the thrift store and cut the living daylights out of!

The necklace was difficult but a fun challenge to take on. The white “teeth”(I believe they are) I made with air dry clay, then used some wooden beads I found at Michaels, put them on a long piece of ribbon, and yay I had the necklace! One tooth broke at one point so I had to make another one, I didn’t enjoy that much.

Necklace

The armbands and headband I just made with buttons I picked out at Fabricland and with the same ribbon I used for the necklace. I decided to just tie the arm bands on in the end cause I didn’t take the time to figure out a better way to keep them on, which was kind of irritating in the end because they kept slipping down my arm, but you live and you learn, right?

My hair was already a fairly dark brown which was nice, but a little longer than I would have liked, I just really didn’t want to cut it again ‘cause I’m trying to grow it out! I also really don’t enjoy wearing wigs, so I didn’t bother with that.

For the face makeup, I used a dark red lipstick, which ended up being a really stupid idea since it doesn’t really dry, it just sits there on your face, just waiting for you to smudge it all over and make you look like a fool. I don’t know why I didn’t think about that before, just please don’t judge me.

The earrings I had at first were some blue dyed wooden hoops that I painted white but the dye was so intense it came through the white paint and made it just a light blue, also the paint was crap and had clumps in it…it just didn’t really work out, soooo I was super excited when I found an earring set at Michaels with the circular shiny shell style stuff I was looking for in the first place.

Then finally my boots. These I felt like were one of the most important components of the costume. My first attempt was ridiculous and was rather embarrassing. I attempted to make boots out of plastic, crappy, fake leather fabric. I don’t even want to get into that they looked so dumb. Anyways, I was super super lucky to find a pair of boots, again at the thrift shop, that were pretty well perfect (and fit perfectly too)! I was so excited and when I got home and altered them, they looked even better. At that point I felt a lot more confident and was eager to walk into Fan Expo in my costume! I was really quite proud of my work.

There is more to Princess Mononoke’s apparel, such as the big white fur cape, the mask, and the ears, but I didn’t like how the white fur fabric I bought looked in the end, and I was having a hard time making the mask. (I was also having a hard time motivating myself to paint and be artful)

IMG_1566

In any case, I had so much fun wearing it all day on the 2nd day of Fan Expo. I had a few people ask for pictures, and I had pictures taken with fellow Princess Mononoke cosplayers and lots of wonderful compliments too! It was cool to see other peoples renditions and how they went about making certain parts of the costume. Most people had the white fur cape and the mask, and some even had the dagger or spear. I was really wishing I had made those parts to the costume after that, but I guess it was also more comfortable without them!

I’m now slowly getting into sewing and am eager to increase my skills to make better costumes in the future! I think cosplaying is a really fun hobby, and I can’t wait to do it again!

Fan Expo Vancouver was also my first convention EVER! You can take a look at my recap here!
