I love The Killing. The two season long murder mystery was a breath of fresh air that the crime drama genre desperately needed. The series was well written, shocking, disturbing, and addicting, and I was very disappointed when AMC announced that they would not be renewing it for a third season.

Then things looked like they were about to turn around: AMC wasn’t opposed to letting another network take over, and Netflix was in talks to produce a third season. We reported earlier this month that the show was set to return, but very few details were know at that time.

Variety has confirmed that The Killing is indeed returning for a third season, and as was rumoured, on AMC itself! Netflix appears to still be in final talks for streaming rights, but the season should find its way to the service shortly after it concludes. Writers are back to work, with production scheduled to begin in just a few months for a probable May premiere. There’s no word yet on which cast members will return, though I’m sure Joel Kinnaman and Mereille Enos are a top priority.

If you haven’t seen the show, I’d wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone. I’m extremely excited for the series to return, and will most definitely be tuning in. Check out a trailer for the show below, and let me know what you think!

A&E has just released two short teasers to garner excitement for their upcoming series Bates Motel. Colour me excited: while each video runs for just 15 seconds, each is well done, effective, and very creepy.

Bates Motel will of course act as a prequel to the 1960 Alfred Hitchcock classic Psycho (though interestingly enough, it looks to be set in modern times). Freddie Highmore will play a young Norman Bates, while his mother Norma will be played by Vera Farmiga. Nothing is know about the plot at this time, aside from the fact thatBates Motel will portray the twisted mother and sun relationship, and Norman’s descent into madness.

Bates Motel is set to premiere sometime in 2013. Excited?

Many of us here at Geekscape thoroughly enjoyed 2012’s biggest box-office flop, John Carter. We hopefully influenced at least a few others to head out and see the film, but overall, almost nobody did.

There is however, a silver lining for both Disney and fans: John Carter is part of the Oscar race. The film had absolutely breathtaking effects, and it may just be recognized for that (which HAS to increase the movie’s popularity).

10 films remain in the running for best visual effects, and John Carter is one of them! Of course, only five of them will make it to the awards ceremony. The films still in the running are:

“The Amazing Spider-Man”
“Cloud Atlas”
“The Dark Knight Rises”
“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey”
“John Carter”
“Life of Pi”
“Marvel’s The Avengers”
“Prometheus”
“Skyfall”
“Snow White and the Huntsman”

Which movies would you like to see nominated? What would you like to see win? Let us know! The final nominations will be announced on January 10, with the awards ceremony following on February 24th.

Machinima has just released episodes 7 and 8 of Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome. As fun as the ride has been these past few weeks, we now have just seven days until it ends.

The series has amassed over six-million views during its short lifespan, which is a testament to the fact that FANS ARE WATCHING. Of course, I just wish there was more content in the works.

Check out the episodes below, and as always, we’d love to hear your thoughts! Battlestar (and The Walking Dead) composer Bear McCreary is also participating in a Reddit AMA today, so you might want to check that out too!

So say we all!

Episode 7:
Waylaid by a ferocious storm, Adama, Coker and Becca reluctantly follow their eccentric savior, marine recon sergeant Xander Toth (John Pyper Ferguson), to shelter in an abandoned ski lodge. Adama and Coker finally find some common ground and secrets about Becca’s mysterious mission are revealed.
Episode 8:
The tentative safety of the ski lodge is abruptly shattered as Cylons breach Toth’s defenses. With Becca and Toth nowhere to be found, Adama and Coker face off against their deadly robotic pursuers. Becca makes a horrifying discovery about the Cylons’ agenda on Djerba.

Monsters University is coming! Next Summer we’ll finally get to see how Mike and Sulley came to be the best friends that we saw in 2001’s Monsters, Inc.

Disney has just released a teaser poster for the film featuring the lovable duo (again voiced by Billy Crystal and John Goodman) in their university letter jackets. Cute stuff!

I can’t wait! Monsters University will hit theatres on June 21, 2013! Excited?

“Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan are an inseparable pair, but that wasn’t always the case. From the moment these two mismatched monsters met they couldn’t stand each other. Monsters University unlocks the door to how Mike and Sulley overcame their differences and became the best of friends.

Cryptozoic Entertainment has quite the gameography under their belt. The company has developed games based on properties from World of Warcraft to The Walking Dead, and all the way to Penny Arcade. They’ve just announced a new title that ought to excite game-players and comic fans alike!

Batman: Arkham City Escape is an upcoming Deck-Building title for two players. One participant will play as Bats, while the other plays as Arkhams City’s villains (who, based on the game’s title, would all like to escape the area).

As Arkham City Escape is a deck building game, replayability should be high as each game will be unique! Here are some of the highlights, straight from Cryptozoic themselves:

-In Batman™: Arkham City Escape, two players engage in a game of wits and strategy that pits Batman against his greatest foes as they try to escape Arkham City!

-One player takes on the role of Batman, and the other player is in command of Batman’s Rogues Gallery! No two games play out the same, as the villain player uses a random assortment of villains each time.

-Each of the Arkham City inmates has exclusive special abilities to use as they take hostages and try to escape the clutches of the Dark Knight.

-Utility Belt cards give Batman access to a variety of special gadgets to use as he works towards stopping the Arkham City escapees and saving his allies!

I’m a pretty big board game player myself, and as I haven’t really had a chance to try a deck building game (and since I’m partial to things based on characters that I like) Arkham City Escape seems as though it may be a great title to start with!

Batman: Arkham City Escape will be available in February 2013. The company has released a preview of a few cards from the game, so check them out below!

After a decent 2003 remake and an abysmal 2006 prequel, the Texas Chainsaw franchise is attempting to finally head back to its origins with the upcoming Texas Chainsaw 3D.

The film serves as a direct sequel to the 1974 original, and will follow a group of ill-fated friends on a road trip to the  house after one of them inherits it from a long lost grandparent. Obviously, things don’t turn out well: you can expect lots of chainsaws, death, and a dude that wears other people’s faces. Creepy.

Lionsgate has just released a new trailer for the film, so check it out below, and let us know what you think! I’m certainly interested to see how this one fares, being a proper sequel to the 1974 classic!

Lionsgate’s TEXAS CHAINSAW 3D continues the legendary story of the homicidal Sawyer family, picking up where Tobe Hooper’s 1974 horror classic left off in Newt, Texas, where for decades people went missing without a trace. The townspeople long suspected the Sawyer family, owners of a local barbeque pit, were somehow responsible. Their suspicions were finally confirmed one hot summer day when a young woman escaped the Sawyer house following the brutal murders of her four friends. Word around the small town quickly spread, and a vigilante mob of enraged locals surrounded the Sawyer stronghold, burning it to the ground and killing every last member of the family–or so they thought. Decades later and hundreds of miles away from the original massacre, a young woman named Heather learns that she has inherited a Texas estate from a grandmother she never knew she had. After embarking on a road trip with friends to uncover her roots, she finds she is the sole owner of a lavish, isolated Victorian mansion. But her newfound wealth comes at a price as she stumbles upon a horror that awaits her in the mansion’s dank cellars…

Texas Chainsaw 3D opens on January 4th.

We’re just one day away from the opening of LD Entertainment’s The Collection, and the company (care of IGN) has decided to treat us to the first six minutes!

I thought that 2009’s The Collector was a cool and original twist to the ‘murderer in the house’ genre, so I’ll definitely be giving this one a shot. I’m also a fan of Josh Stewart: he’s creepy as hell, and I also thought he was great in 2010’s short-live ABC dramady No Ordinary Family.

In any case, this is a pretty cool opening to what looks to be one of the most fun horror films of these cold (at least where I am) Winter months. Check it out below, and let us know what you think!

Josh Stewart will return as Arkin who escapes with his life from the vicious grips of “The Collector” during an entrapment party where he adds beautiful Elena to his “Collection.” Instead of recovering from the trauma, Arkin is suddenly abducted from the hospital by mercenaries hired by Elena’s wealthy father. Arkin is blackmailed to team up with the mercenaries and track down The Collector’s booby trapped hide out and save Elena from his sadistic rituals.

The beginning of the end for Spartacus is now less than two months away, and Starz has just released a new poster to advertise it.

I haven’t yet had a chance to watch the most recent season, but the synopsis for War of the Damned states that the new season takes place following the defeat of Roman commander Gaius Claudius Glaber. Spartacus and his men have amassed major victories against the Romans after the Battle of Vesuvius. These victories have not only forged the legend of Spartacus, but have greatly increased the ranks of the rebellion slaves to more than 30,000. Sounds pretty cool to me!

In my opinion, the first season of Spartacus was absolutely phenomenal, and the story of Andy Whitfield’s passing is one that everyone in Hollywood (and everywhere else) will remember for a long time. There is a wonderful looking documentary in production about the actor titled Be Here Nowand I absolutely can’t wait to see it.

Check out the poster below, and let us know what you think! Spartacus: War of the Damned will premiere on January 25th.

Guillermo Del Toro’s highly anticipated Pacific Rim began its Viral Marketing campaign today, and I have to say that they make me very excited. It’s also a Sci-Fi coming from Guillermo Del Toro, so who wouldn’t be excited by that?

Not much has been revealed at this time: a memo, a blueprint, and a PSA, but I’m sure that as the campaign goes on there will be some pleasantly surprising revelations. I love it when a company tries to build the world and atmosphere of the movie long before it hits theatres: The Dark Knight and Cloverfield are both excellent examples of this, and by simply following their campaigns, each experience was made much more memorable.

Check out the just released materials below, and let us know what you think! Are you looking forward to Pacific Rim? The movie will hit theatres (in 3D) on July 12, 2013.

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end.  To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge.  But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju.  On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past.  Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Back in August, our fearless leader Jonathan and Geekscape staffer Scott Alminiana had an awesome conversation about a little film called Miami Connection: an independent martial arts film that was produced in 1987, but never saw the light of day until earlier this year.

Response for the film has been overwhelmingly positive. Miami Connection‘s had a small theatrical run across the United States, and now we’re approaching a physical (and of course, digital) release. Miami Connection will be viewable by all on December 11. You’ll have a multitude of VOD options, as well as DVD, Blu-Ray, and VHS. Yes, it’s nearly 2013 and a movie is about to release on VHS!

What year is it!?

The VHS edition will be a limited run of 400 copies, and is likely meant as a collector’s item more than a means to actually watch the film (after all, who has a VCR these days?). In any case, I can’t wait to see this movie!

The DVD/Blu-Ray editions will also include a multitude of special features:

● Friends For Eternity: The Making of Miami Connection

● Audio Commentary with Star/Writer/Producer Y.K. Kim and Writer/Star Joseph Diamand

● Over 20 Minutes of Deleted Scenes

● The 25th Anniversary Dragon Sound Reunion Concert From Fantastic Fest 2012

● Theatrical Trailer created by Hobo with a Shotgun director Jason Eisener

● Who Is Y.K. Kim? Promo Video

● The New American Dream Promo Video

● Theatrical Trailers

What do you think? Will you be checking out Miami Connection? You can preorder any edition now at DraftHouseFilms.com

The year is 1987. Motorcycle ninjas tighten their grip on Florida’s narcotics trade, viciously annihilating anyone who dares move in on their turf. Multi-national martial arts rock band Dragon Sound have had enough, and embark on a roundhouse wreck-wave of crime-crushing justice. When not chasing beach bunnies or performing their hit song “Against the Ninja,” Mark (tae kwon do master/inspirational speaker Y.K. Kim) and the boys are kicking and chopping at the drug world’s smelliest underbelly. It’ll take every ounce of their blood and courage, but Dragon Sound can’t stop until they’ve completely destroyed the dealers, the drunk bikers, the kill-crazy ninjas, the middle-aged thugs, the “stupid cocaine”…and the entire MIAMI CONNECTION!!!

You know the drill by now. Telltale releases a new episode of The Walking Dead, and Geekscape gets a zombie hard-on about it while swearing we’re not on the company’s payroll (really… we’re not!).

If you’re hoping for anything different this time around, you might as well go read something else (I’d recommend our weekly Walking Dead column, or at least something on Geekscape). Or you could simply put up with it and listen to how freaking INCREDIBLE this experience was, especially now that it’s come to an end. And what an end it was.

So let’s get to it! There will be light spoilers ahead, so I’d refrain from reading until you’ve finished the episode!

The first chapter of Telltale’s The Walking Dead launched just seven months ago, but it feels as though it’s been years: it seems so long ago that Lee was a prisoner in that police cruiser: it’s been nearly a lifetime since he found Clementine hidden in that treehouse: ages have passed since the group was starving in the motor pool: Duck and Katjaa left us abruptly so very, very long ago. This is a testament to the unparalleled character design of the title: none of these individualss existed just seven months ago, but now each and every one of them seems so real and so different than when we were first introduced to them. The simple fact that I feel as though I personally knew these characters is an accomplishment that in my opinion, no other game has achieved before. And it’s also why it’s so hard to say goodbye to them (and we’ve said goodbye to most of them)!

Eerie, intense, and climactic, from the first moment to the last.

As amazing as Telltale’s The Walking Dead is, it’s also an extremely hard game to review. Not because I don’t know what to score it or something silly like that, but because if I reveal one major spoiler and one person decides to read this before playing, I’ve ruined the entire experience, and I wouldn’t wish that upon my worst enemy (well, maybe that one ex-girlfriend). The Walking Dead is all about your experience. Not how it ended for me, not the decisions that I made, but you, and only you. It’s like The Sixth Sense: you don’t walk around asking people if they’ve seen it, and then blurt out the twist if they say that they haven’t. If that sounds like something you would do, then you’re an awful person and I hope someone ruins this game for you, but it’s not going to be me.

Someone ruined ‘The Sixth Sense’ for me… I’m still bitter about it. So I won’t be ruining The Walking Dead game for you here.

As the fourth chapter, Around Every Corner, came to a close, our survivors were left in pretty dire straights. The final moments of the episode were among the most jaw dropping we’d seen so far: a horde of walkers on route to Savannah, Clementine kidnapped, and Lee with a fresh walker-bite on his wrist… Yes. The main character… that you’re playing as! LEE WAS BITTEN! HOW COULD THAT HAPPEN!?

I had so many extreme emotions going through me in those closing moments. I was angry because I liked the character so much, and unless his hand was quickly removed (which these survivors don’t have a clue about), things were not going to end well. At the same time, I was excited: it’s not often that games surprise me anymore, and this was something that I never, ever saw coming. Where could things possibly go from there? This had to have a happy ending, right? After all this game had put me through, I really should have known better.

If Lee doesn’t make it, these two would make pretty great parents.

No Time Left fittingly wastes no time getting started. Within moments, we’re forced to make arguably the toughest, most cringe-inducing decision of the entire game’s duration. A decision has to be made about Lee’s bite, and just like the beginning of Episode 2, during Ben’s introduction with the bear-trap, the decision to remove a limb is a tough and grisly one (and one that Telltale is going to make us experience every moment of). As disturbing as AMC’s The Walking Dead can sometimes be, you’re still just a passive TV viewer. Here, you’re not just watching, you’re making every tough decision, stabbing every walker, removing every limb with a bone-saw and oftentimes worse. Your choices effect the group, it’s your fault when others die, and it’s you and the people close to you that will suffer if you make a bad decision (and you’ll make lots of them). In writing this review, I realized that I often spent more time thinking about how to react to something while playing The Walking Dead than I do in real life. That’s another testament to how well this game is crafted: I’m constantly worried that something I say will be taken the wrong way, and I sincerely care about what these character’s think of me. Is that messed up or what?

In another intense moment, the horde hits Savannah.

No Time Left takes The Walking Dead‘s already fantastic presentation, and somehow makes it even better. It’s hard to put a finger on, but something here just felt different, maybe because it was a constant process of saying goodbye to characters we’ve grown to love. Vocal performances were nearly perfect (as they have been in every episode), and music and sound effects were also at their best. The cinematography of this episode is what really impressed me: as Lee escaped up the hospital’s elevator shaft in the introduction, with light rays shining through the dusty halls of each walker infested floor, I realized that the world of The Walking Dead has never been more beautiful.

Unfortunately, No Time Left was also the shortest episode of the bunch. I say unfortunately only because while I couldn’t wait to see the conclusion and where our characters would end up, it was an experience that I never wanted to end. The plot of the episode is the rescue of Clementine from her unknown kidnapper and the story makes a straight b-line to this confrontation. While short, the pacing of this episode is perfect, and I felt as though if a single moment had been cut, we’d be losing out on something meaningful. Every line of dialogue, every tough decision I was forced to make (did they seem tougher than ever to anyone else?), every second that passed was absolutely essential to the plot and understanding of this bleak, bleak finale.

And the finale is bleak. As I said earlier, chances of a happy ending to this story ended when you pressed the ‘Start’ button. Even though the episode was the shortest, it also includes the best moment in the entire series (of which there were many): Lee coming face to face with Clementine’s kidnapper. This sequence not only ties the entire series together, it also plays completely on the specific decisions that the player has made going back to the beginning of the first episode. It’s an incredible, self-referential moment that twisted all of my previous choices and threw them back in my face. While it brought back some very dark memories, the sequence acted as both a story summation, a psychological profile and a chess game at the same time. I don’t recall another game that had ever put me in that position before and it’s yet another testament to how the Walking Dead has taken the Adventure Game genre to another level.

As always, I played the PS3 version of the game. As is common with playing The Walking Dead on the platform (again, I’ve only played on PS3, so I can’t vouch for other versions), there were occasional technical issues that kept the game from being perfect. For me, the framerate dropped a little more often than I’d have liked, and as I’ve mentioned before, there were sometimes brief pauses while the console loaded the next camera angle. Annoying and distracting, but not nearly enough to be very detrimental to the experience.

This isn’t the saddest thing we’d see this episode.

As the episode progressed I slowly realized how things were going to end and I was both shocked and helplessly drawn to the inevitable. When the time finally came and my assumptions were correct, it hit me much harder than I’d expected and for the first time ever, a video game brought tears to my eyes. Yes. Actual tears.

As the final lines were spoken and the game faded to black for the first time without a ‘To Be Continued’ message, I realized that I couldn’t have asked for a better conclusion. The credits rolled and I was mesmerized, frozen. The Walking Dead was not only the best game I’d play this year, but one of the best gaming experiences of my entire life. I just can’t believe it’s over.

Thanks Lee. Thanks Clementine. Thanks Telltale.

I can’t wait to experience it all again. I can’t wait to make different decisions just to see how things turn out. Most of all, I can’t wait for the announced Season Two!

The Walking Dead: Episode 5 – No Time Left scores a heartbroken 5/5.

PS: Make sure to stay through the credits. You can thank me later.

Thanks to the clever folks over at TheFilmStage, the first full synopsis for the highly anticipated Star Trek Into Darkness has just been revealed! While the first footage from the film is set to premiere with The Hobbit in just a few weeks, we finally have an idea of what to expect! If you’re trying to avoid any potential spoilers, you’ll probably want to avert your eyes beyond this point (then again, why did you even click the link!).

In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes Star Trek Into Darkness.

When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction.

As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

So Kirk & crew find themselves on a manhunt. Who could they be hunting for? Jonathan thinks he may have just cracked this mystery (and I absolutely believe he has)!

This is Benedict Cumberbatch. It’s widely known that he’ll be playing the villain in JJ Abrams’ second Star Trek film. His character however, remains nameless, and likely will for some time. I’ll warn you again, there are potential spoilers ahead, so if you’d prefer to be in the dark (pun intended), stop reading!

To find the probable identity of the Into Darkness baddie, we had to go back… way back. All the way back to 1966 in fact, to Star Trek season one, episode three. Check out the synopsis, and see if anything sticks out:

The starship USS Enterprise is on an exploratory mission to leave the galaxy. En route, the damaged ship’s recorder of the SS Valiant, an Earth spaceship lost 200 years earlier, is found. The record is incomplete, but it reveals that the Valiant had been swept from its path by a “magnetic space storm,” and that the crew had frantically searched for information about extra-sensory perception (ESP) in the ship’s library computer. The recording ends with the captain of the Valiant apparently giving a self-destruct order.

Kirk decides that they need to know what happened to the Valiant, and the Enterprise crosses the edge of the galaxy where it encounters a strange barrier which damages the ship’s systems and warp drive, forcing a retreat. At the same time, nine crewmembers are killed and both helmsman Mitchell and ship’s psychiatrist Dr. Elizabeth Dehner are knocked unconscious by the barrier’s effect. When he awakens, Mitchell’s eyes glow silver, and he begins to display remarkable psionics.

Mitchell becomes increasingly arrogant and hostile toward the rest of the crew, declaring that he has become godlike, enforcing his desires with fearsome displays of telepathic and telekinetic power. Science Officer Spock (Leonard Nimoy) comes to believe that Valiant crew members may have experienced the same phenomenon, and destroyed the ship to keep the power from spreading. He advises Kirk that Mitchell may have to be killed before his powers develop further, but Kirk angrily disagrees.

Alarmed that Mitchell may take over the Enterprise, Kirk decides to maroon him on an unmanned lithium-cracking facility on the remote planet of Delta Vega. Once there, the landing party tries to confine Mitchell, but his powers have become great. He goes on a rampage, kills navigator Lt. Lee Kelso and escapes, taking with him Dr. Dehner, who has now developed similar powers.

Kirk follows and appeals to Dr. Dehner’s humanity for help. Before Mitchell can kill Kirk, the doctor attacks and weakens him. Mitchell fatally injures Dehner, but before he can recover from the effort, Kirk uses a phaser rifle to create a rock slide, killing Mitchell.

Back on the Enterprise, Kirk makes a log entry that both Dehner and Mitchell gave their lives “in performance of duty,” rationalizing that they did not ask for what happened to them. Spock admits to feeling sympathy for Mitchell too, and Kirk comments that there is hope for him.

This paragraph from a certain character’s IMDB bio also sounds rather fitting:

Mitchell was briefly stunned by direct contact with the strange energies of the barrier, but he recovered quickly. As his recovery continued, however, he began to display a widening array of psionic abilities. These abilities, or perhaps the energy itself, began to fundamentally alter Mitchell’s personality: he became progressively more emotionally distant, cruel, ruthless, and convinced of his own magnificence. Worse, with the passage of time his abilities continued to grow stronger at a geometric rate. They were accompanied by only two physical manifestations: a curious silver light or glimmer that appeared in Mitchell’s eyes, and a later accelerated graying of his hair, beginning at the temples and sideburns.

John Dalberg-Acton once said “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” That’s the basis of Star Trek Into Darkness. Benedict Cumberbatch will play Lt. Cmdr. Gary Mitchell, who the Enterprise crew will be forced to hunt down after his newfound powers send him over to the dark side.

1966’s version of Gary Mitchell

Agree? Disagree? Let us know!

Baldur’s Gate originally launched in November of 1998. I was just 8 years old at the time, and while that’s certainly no excuse, the game that’s often called one of the greatest RPG’s ever developed is one that I wouldn’t learn about until years later.

I’m much older now (22), and I’ve still never played through the game. I was extremely excited when the Enhanced Edition was announced, as such a huge update to such a classic title meant that I simply wouldn’t be able to ignore it any longer.

The release date is now just two days away and a new trailer has just been released for the game. It looks awesome, and I can’t wait to get my hands on it! Again, Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition will be available for Mac, PC, and iOS on Wednesday, and on Android at an unspecified date.

Are you a fan of the series? Are you planning to pick up this new edition? For which platform? My iPad is the device I always have with me, and Baldur’s Gate seems perfectly suited to a touchscreen, so it’s probably safe to say that the mobile version will be my edition of choice!

The Wii U menu music is pretty wonderful. It’s groovy, relaxing, and genuinely makes you not mind the time you spend wandering through the Wii U’s sometimes slow (for now) menu system.

DJ CUTMAN thought the music was great too. Great enough in fact, to collect the tunes and release them as an unofficial 9-track album! The album is called WiiU Grooves, and if you like the style of music (or if you simply want to feel like you’re near your beloved Wii U while away from home), it’s certainly worth the download!

Check out the album below and let us know what you think! If you feel like downloading it for offline play, simply head to DJ CUTMAN’s official website! The album of course, isn’t endorsed by Nintendo, so it may be taken down at any time!

BBC has just released a teaser poster for the anticipated Doctor Who Christmas special. This year’s celebration will air right on Christmas day, so superfans have a tough choice ahead: drop out of dinner early, or force your family to crowd around the TV?

As many times as it’s been recommended to me, I’ve still never seen an episode (I know, crazy right). I’ve heard that Doctor Who is simply incredible, and it’s definitely on my list to watch, so I’m sure I’ll get to it one day!

Are you excited for this special? Will you be watching it the night it airs, or simply TIVOing it for later? Check out the poster below along with a first look at the frosty villains of the episode, and of course let us know what you think!

These things look TERRIFYING!

Earlier this month it was announced that Disney’s 90’s hit Boy Meets World was getting a sequel! Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel were in early talks to reprise their roles, which was a very exciting piece of news for fans of the original show.

It’s now official: Deadline has just reported that Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel have BOTH signed on to reprise their roles. I never thought I’d be able to say it, but Corey and Topanga are headed back to television.

Now that they’re officially involved, I can definitely see old fans checking out Girl Meets World. Many of those old fans will have children of their own by now, and it would be very cool to see both generations able to enjoy this show. The series will take place over a decade after Boy Meets World concluded. Corey and Topanga are still together and are now raising a daughter of their own.

Girl Meets World is still early in development and as such, doesn’t yet have a release date. I grew up with the original series, and I’ll certainly be checking this one out whenever it premieres. How about you?

Well this makes me feel old.

Here at Geekscape, we’re pretty huge fans of Jason Trost. This year’s The FP was a hilarious, weird, and extremely original romp through the war torn land of Frazier Park. I couldn’t tell you how many people I’ve shown The FP to, and after a few minutes of “this is the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen”, every single person has ended up loving it. The movie was quite clearly a labour of extreme love, and I can’t wait to see more of that in JTRO’s next film, All Superheroes Must Die.

Distributor Image Entertainment has just given the film an official release date. Awesomely enough, All Superheroes Must Die will receive a limited theatrical run along with the originally planned VOD release. VOD will be available on New Year’s Day (January 1st), while the film’s theatrical engagement will begin just 3 days later (January 4th).

The film won’t be playing anywhere near me, but if VOD had lines, I’d be the first one in it! Check out the trailer below, and let us know what you think!

If you’re hungering for more JTRO, back in March we featured him along with siblings Sarah and Brandon, in a hilariously inappropriate, unusually alcohol-filled episode of Geekscape.

This must be absolutely nerve-wracking! Peter Jackson’s adaptation of JRR Tolkien’s The Hobbit is set to premiere in New Zealand this Wednesday, but the film isn’t even finished post production!

The team has less than 48 hours to complete the movie, so it’s a definite race against the clock. Everything of course, is detailed in the latest Hobbit video diary. Maybe if they didn’t spend so much time on these, the movie would be done (though they’re very cool and are a pleasure to watch)!

Since you’re probably not going to the premiere, you’ll be able to check out The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey on December 14th. Excited? Will you be seeing the movie in traditional 24fps, or are you lucky enough to live near a 48fps showing?

I can’t wait!

Welcome to Walking Dead Weekly! As the title implies, each week (bearing a new episode of course), we’ll be taking a look at the latest episode of the AMC series. I’ll let you know how I felt about each weekly offering, and will also compare it to what Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard were doing with the comic at the same time.

Last week saw Merle and company on the hunt for Michonne. Things didn’t quite work out how Merle would have wanted (with Michonne dead), but he did end up with something even better: Glenn and Maggie. After the couple wouldn’t take Merle to see his brother, he took them hostage and brought them to Woodbury. An injured Michonne found our prison just as the episode came to a close, meaning that 6 episodes in we finally got our first connections between Woodbury and the West Georgia Correctional Facility. Now that the two locales will soon know about each other, I can confidently say that shit is about to hit the fan. Of course that isn’t all that happened – Rick answered that damned phone and half an episode later realized that he was talking to his dead wife, Andrea continued her string of bad relationships by hooking up with the Governor, and we also found Carol, alive and hungry after being all but forgotten by the rest of the group. In my opinion, Hounded was the weakest episode we’ve seen this season. That being said, it wasn’t bad by any means. It simply wasn’t up to par with previous weeks!

Let’s head right into When the Dead Come Knocking! As always, there are spoilers below, so don’t read until you’ve watched!

Episode Thoughts – ‘When the Dead Come Knocking’

The Walking Dead and I had a fantastic day today. First, I finally had a chance to sit down and play through the fifth and final episode of Telltale’s adventure game version of The Walking Dead. It was an incredible climax to what is by far the most enjoyable and memorable gaming experience that I’ve had all year. Second, after last week’s just okay episode of the AMC series, we got an awesome return to form with this week’s offering. When the Dead Come Knocking was simply much more of what we’ve come to expect this season: awesome.

The episode opens with a very impressive standoff between Merle and Glenn, all while Maggie listens from the next room. Merle wants the location of the camp (and subsequently, his brother), and Glenn won’t give it to him. Merle has many tactics at his disposal while attempting to obtain the information he’s looking for, from the knife that is now permanently attached to his arm, all the way to bringing in a walker to finish Glenn off. Of course, Glenn’s tough, and throughout the course of the interrogation, Merle won’t learn a single thing. Nice work!

There ain’t no scaring Glenn.

We then head back to the big house just seconds after Hounded came to a close: Michonne is still on the outside of the fence, though now walkers are starting to notice her. She tries to make her way to the gate but quickly succumbs to her injuries and faints. Rick and friends are nice enough to carry her in, where she quickly divulges all that she knows: Glenn & Maggie have been taken to Woodbury, and that place is misleading as hell. She was also nice enough to bring the baby formula that Maggie and Glenn had been collecting before they were kidnapped! Now baby can eat!

Carl (who’s now a crack shot) just barely saved the day here.

We’re then treated to a touching reunion between Carol and the rest of the gang: it was a great scene, and really almost makes you forgive the fact that they forgot all about her… almost.

I remembered you Carol. I remembered.

After some heavy petting (whatever that means), Governor asks Andrea for a favour: Milton is testing whether walkers retain any of their memory when they turn, and Phillip wants Andrea there to take the walker out if need be. I really enjoyed this scene: we of course know that a walker is a walker, and once they turn all they want to do is eat you. Andrea knows this too after having her sister turn all the way back in season one. It’s really neat to see her go with it even though she knows full well what’s going to happen. Milton nearly turns into zombie food, and would not be alive if it hadn’t been for Andrea’s quick reflexes.

At least the guy volunteered. You’d think Governor would’ve forced someone into it.

Two important group members are being held hostage, so it isn’t long before Rick arranges a party to go get them back. Michonne (as she’s the only one who knows where Woodbury is) and some of the more able-bodied group members load up their weapons and head out. They also take the two remaining inmates (Axel and Oscar) with them: I’m a little worried about this, as the two haven’t really had any character development yet, and at this point are still highly expendable. I hope this doesn’t end up the case, as Axel became an extremely interesting character in the comic (while Oscar never existed in the paper version).

Before the group leaves, Rick pulls carl aside for a chat which amounts to: sorry you had to shoot your mom, and the baby needs a name. The two settle on (drumroll) Judith before Rick runs off to play hero. FINALLY this baby has a name!

Back at Woodbury, after Merle is unsuccessful in getting anything out of Glenn, Governor decides that he’ll test his luck with Maggie. I was scared here: in the comic, Governor spends almost a week brutally beating and raping Michonne. It was tough enough to read that, and I’d guess it would be even tougher to watch it play out. After forcing Maggie to strip and alluding to the fact that he could do much worse, Governor thankfully doesn’t. Instead, he puts a gun to Glenn’s head in front of Maggie, which in turn makes her reveal everything.

I was holding my breath here. I really didn’t want anything to happen to Maggie.

As When the Dead Come Knocking closes, Rick, Daryl, Axel, Oscar, and Michonne are about to launch an attack on the town, while the Governor has sent a recon team to the prison. Whether or not you’ve read The Walking Dead, you know that shit is about to get violent. Of course, next week is the midseason finale, so what better time for it to happen!

As I mentioned above, When the Dead Come Knocking was a fantastic return to form after (in my opinion) the show lost a bit steam with last week’s Hounded. I can’t wait until next week, but I’m certainly not looking forward to the two month break afterwards.

As usual, the episode closed with a preview for next week! Again, next episode is the mid-season finale, meaning after it airs we won’t see another new chapter until February! Check out the preview for Made to Suffer below, and let us know what you thought of When the Dead Come Knocking!

Comic Comparison

Poor Glenn. No matter how you like your Walking Dead, whether on paper or on TV, he’s going to have some tough times in Woodbury. AMC sees him brutally beaten as a means to (unsuccessfully) learn the location of their camp, while on paper they keep him captive while Rick unknowingly gives the Governor exactly what they’re looking for. Fans definitely seem to love Glenn, so I’m sure it was a tough night for them not knowing whether or not he would make it through the episode!

Glenn is also yet to shave his head in the TV version

As I mentioned in past columns, in Robert Kirkman’s stories, it’s Michonne that gets the brunt of the punishment. Governor Phil is a real jerk to her, and appears to take a sick pleasure in the emotional and physical torture he doles out. It appears as though on TV the Governor, while still a sick bastard, isn’t (yet) as disgusting as he is in the comic book. He mainly takes to scaring Maggie instead of brutally traumatizing her. What a gentleman.

Have I mentioned that this guy’s a bastard?

The way that Rick and friends are introduced to Woodbury is also much different. The comic has them looking for a settlement after tracks lead away from the helicopter crash (as we saw in episode 3 of this season). They (being Rick, Glenn, Michonne, and Tyreese) find the town, and quickly wish they hadn’t, as Robert Kirkman leaves no guesswork to the Governor’s intentions.

That fateful copter crash.

AMC’s version introduced us to the town weeks ago (while following the adventures of Andrea and Michonne), while Rick’s group learned of it in this very episode. Just as in the comic, the introduction does not have a happy ending: the only reason Rick is taking a group there is to get back their kidnapped friends.

On screen, Michonne was just now introduced to the group, while when Woodbury became a plot point of the comic, she had already been a member for some time. AMC also had her arrive in a very dire state, and had it not been for Hershel’s medical knowledge, she likely wouldn’t have made it. On paper, she’s quickly accepted into the party after saving Otis from certain death.

Michonne: badass on screen, badass on paper.

I can’t wait to see what happens next. Could it be as surprising as the prison finale of the comic? Will the ordeal end as quickly as the comic did? Woodbury and the prison seem much to interesting to be done with at the end of just one season. Then again, though I’ve read way beyond what the show has covered, I still find myself surprised every week. After a rocky season two, we’re now halfway through season 3 and it still rocks.

Of course, If I could only experience The Walking Dead in one way, I certainly wouldn’t be watching the show OR reading the comic. Neither media has managed to carry the same sense of hopelessness, sheer terror, and surprise like Telltale has with their just concluded adventure game. Play it!

As good as the show is, as good as the comic is, the game is better. MUCH BETTER.

See you next week!

The Golden Globes will air on January 13th, 2013. Just two days later, the Academy will announce their nominations: The Dark Knight Rises was very good, but is it good enough to change the way these awards groups typically receive comic book movies?

Warner Bros. has just released two Golden Globes ‘For Your Consideration’ posters for The Dark Knight Rises. They look fairly standard for awards posters, smothered in praise and the mass amount of awards the film would like to be considered for. They look pretty neat in any case, so check them out below!

What did you think of The Dark Knight Rises? If any, which of these awards do you think it deserves?

What was I most looking forward to this Friday? Not shopping, as I’m all the way up in Canada. I just couldn’t wait to see what Bill Adama did next in the fantastic Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome.

Unlike most shows that air on Fridays, Machinima wasn’t about to let this one get in the way of new content, and has just released episodes 5 and 6. Watch them below, and as always, let us know what you think!

Adama dogfights Raiders while the Battlestar Osiris tries to hold off a Cylon Basestar.

Miss anything? Check out past episodes here and here!

How are you feeling about the show so far? Wish it had been picked up for a whole season?

Blood and Chrome is set to conclude on December 7th. It will also air in full on Syfy sometime in February, with a Blu-Ray release shortly after.

Our favourite study group just lost one of its members.

Deadline has reported that Chevy Chase has left NBC’s troubled sitcom Community, which was initially set to premiere its fourth season last month. Rumours that Chase was at his wits end with the show have been swirling for months now, beginning in April when a leaked voicemail publicized his hate for Community creator Dan Harmon.

That being said, his departure isn’t the biggest surprise, as it’s been know that Chase has been unhappy with the show since season two was airing in 2011. The sitcom has had an extremely tough year, with creator Dan Harmon being fired (with most of the writers following in protest), numerous delays between airings and premieres, and now this. It seems as though the half-sized fourth season is going to be a sad goodbye to our favourite community college.

Most of the season had already been filmed before this decision, so it’s said that only the final few episodes will be missing Mr. Hawthorne. In any case, he won’t be a part of 4×13, which unless a ratings miracle happens, is very likely to be the series finale.

I’m bummed out about this. Anyone else? Pierce may have been a racist, misunderstood old bigot, but he was our racist, misunderstood old bigot. Maybe now they’ll finally let Chang in the group?

We’ll miss you Pierce, thanks for all your hard work.

The ‘Breaking’ title was a joke of course. Was there a single person that didn’t expect the Paranormal Activity franchise to get another sequel? After the abysmal (check out our review here) fourth film grossed over $135 million, yet another film in the series was inevitable.

I actually really enjoyed the first three movies. That first trilogy was cleverly weaved together to tell a believable story of a haunted family. Then Paranormal Activity 4 ruined everything.

Maybe you liked the fourth movie. If that’s the case and you’re itching for more, you really don’t have to wait long! Just 371 days after the most recent release, you’ll be getting another! Lazy or can’t count? That puts Paranormal Activity 5 in theatres on October 25, 2013.

Anyone else remember how terrible the Saw movies got?

We’ve given Bates Motel plenty of coverage here at Geekscape, and that’s because I’m genuinely excited for the project. I can’t wait to see the trouble that a young Norman Bates and a not-yet-dead Norma can get up to, and just how Norman grows to step into his insane adult shoes.

Bates Motel is currently in production, and is set to premiere sometime in 2013. Carlton Cuse (LOST) is showrunning the series, which stars Freddie Highmore and Vera Farmiga as the mother/son duo.

How do they look?

It’s hard to tell from a still image, but Norma just doesn’t look crazy enough to me!

You’ve never seen Jack like this. Warner Bros. has just released a brand new trailer for the anticipated Jack the Giant Slayer. The film (originally named after the fairy tale it’s based on, Jack the Giant Killer) was originally slated to hit theatres in June, but was pushed back to allow more time for special effects, and to give the movie a bigger marketing push. After all this extra time however, at this point the film just looks weird.

Watch the trailer below, and let us know what you think! Jack the Giant Slayer is now set to release on March 1st, 2013, and features the likes of Nicholas Hoult, Ewan McGregor, Stanley Tucci, Bill Nighy, and more!

Jack the Giant Slayer tells the story of an ancient war that is reignited when a young farmhand unwittingly opens a gateway between our world and a fearsome race of giants. Unleashed on the Earth for the first time in centuries, the giants strive to reclaim the land they once lost, forcing the young man, Jack (Nicholas Hoult) into the battle of his life to stop them. Fighting for a kingdom, its people, and the love of a brave princess, he comes face to face with the unstoppable warriors he thought only existed in legend–and gets the chance to become a legend himself.

Better late than never right?

EW today released some new info regarding the highly anticipated Phase One box set. The fantastic looking bundle was originally set to release back in September, but was delayed due to a lawsuit over the case design.

We now have a new release date for the 10-disc set (featuring a slightly different looking briefcase), and while it’s still months away, I can’t help but get excited. New pre-orders are set to start later today, while the set will be available on April 2nd (just 133 more days).

The set will also include additional content that would not have been there had it hit shelves on time including never before seen clips, and a Phase Two preview featuring “footage, concept art, and a few new surprises.”

I’m in. How about you?

This just made me even more excited for Evil Dead.

We still have to wait five more months to see if its true, but Evil Dead‘s new poster proclaims itself to be “The most terrifying film you will ever experience”. I can’t wait!

If you haven’t seen it yet, be sure to check out the recently released trailer. Evil Dead opens April 12th, 2013.

Tomorrow is going to be both sad and glorious.

On one hand, after seven long, amazing, heartbreaking months, we’ll finally get a chance to witness how things conclude for Lee and the gang. On the other hand, my favourite game of 2012 is coming to a close, and I can only imagine that it’s not going to be a happy ending.

Telltale Games has crafted one of the finest adventure titles that I’ve ever played, and if the past few months have been any indication, I can’t recommend it enough. I can’t think of a game that deserves all the praise its been getting more than this one.

Check out the trailer below and share your excitement! It’s going to be tough getting through work tomorrow know that this is waiting for me at home.
