Nearly every year since they took over, 2K has seemingly managed to secure wrestlers for their WWE video games that the company itself had trouble courting. This tradition continues with the reveal trailer for WWE 2K17, showing off Goldberg as this year’s pre-order bonus character.

Bringing the WCW superstar back in dramatic fashion, the trailers for the game over the years have been spectacles in themselves. Echoing the way Goldberg would be escorted to the ring by a group of officers, dozens of cops are shown to finally bring the monster who was billed as being 173-0 in his prime out of exile for his video game re-debut. But as the cards drive passed a Suplex City road sign, what could it mean for the game, or the stars themselves?

I never was a huge Goldberg fan growing up, but seeing him return in this fashion can’t help but get me excited as a wrestling fan. As mentioned, past games have brought in stars like The Ultimate Warrior, Sting and Brock Lesnar before they were ever in talks with WWE themselves, only to open up negotiations that would eventually lead to their real life return. Could we see Goldberg back in a WWE ring? Only time will tell, but 2K has set up a pattern when it comes to this kind of thing. Like the modern day philosopher, Justin Bieber, once said, never say never.

WWE 2K17 will launch on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One PS3 and Xbox 360 in October.

Skylanders fans are in for an interesting game this year.

Yesterday, Activision announced Skylanders Imaginators, A game centered around creating your own Skylander. The game launches October 16th and will be  bundled with the portal of power, the custom character portal, as well as 2 sensei figures. The game is targeting a release date of October 16th for Xbox 360, One, PS4, PS3, and Wii U. Do you like Skylanders? Are you excited for this year’s game? Let us know in the comments below!

This morning, VD-dev Games, developers of the 3DS E-shop title Ironfall Invasion released a trailer for their new racing game Rise: Race The Future. The game looks to be a fully customizable racing game for all current gen consoles and mobile devices, but it seems as though another platform has snuck its way in.

NX

Well, well, well. It looks like our good old mysterious friend the NX as made an appearance at the end of this trailer. Does this really mean anything though? Perhaps. I wouldn’t be surprised if Nintendo was planning an NX reveal in the near future. As for the game itself, the developers are hoping to have it done b this winter. Check out the trailer below! Are you interested in this game now? Will you be picking it up? Tell us in the comments below!

Today something very cool has happened. As of 3PM PST, the indie hit sports game Rocket League now supports cross-network play for both Xbox One and PC.

Sadly, the only thing missing is Sony as PlayStation is oddly absent. Whether PS4 cross-play will be available or not remains to be seen. It’s really cool though as it seems like this can be the first step towards unifying all multiplayer games  across all platforms. Are you excited about this news? What are your hopes for the future of cross-network multiplayer? Tell us in the comments below!

Briefly: Little-known horror gem Among the Sleep released for Windows/OS X all the way back in 2014, and PS4 players got a taste of the terror earlier this year. Now, it’s time for Xbox One owners to finally be scared of the dark once again.

Krillbite Studios revealed today that the long awaited Xbox One version of the unique survival-horror title will hit the console on Friday, June 3rd, and will boast some exclusive pyjamas for the game’s main character.

Among The Sleep is a first-person survival horror game that’s played through the eyes of a toddler. Original as hell already, right? The game is extremely atmospheric, and seeing the world through the eyes and imagination of a human so young (and tiny) makes for a freaky experience like no other.

I loved the title when I played the PS4 version earlier this year, and I’d implore Xbox One owners looking for a totally original horror title to give the game a shot.

You can take a look at a trailer for Among The Sleep below, and let us know if you’re looking forward to this new console version!

Fans eagerly awaiting for Playtonic’s highly anticipated Banjo Kazooie spiritual successor, Yooka Laylee have finally been given an update that they’ll BEE happy about. Many new things were announced today, but the big STINGER was the reveal of the main villain Capital B. BEEing a corporate B.E.O of Hivory Towers, his company has recently teamed up with the villainous Dr. Quack of Quack Crop. to engineer an evil plan to BEEcome the most powerful company in the world.

Capital BOf course the biggest thing people have been BUZZing about is the release date for the highly anticipated playground demo which finally got a release date of sometime in July. While there’s no solid release date still, the team has re-assured people that they won’t BEE (ok I’ll stop now) having to wait until 2017 as they are still targeting an October 2016 release date for the game for Xbox One, Wii U, PS4, and PC. What do you think about the game? Are you excited to finally get the chance to play it soon? Let us know in the comments!

Briefly: The next Destiny expansion has been leaked.

The leak comes via a promotional poster that made its way online. The expansion will be titled Rise of Iron, and according to Kotaku, the DLC will feature a new raid (which will likely be Fallen themed), and will be larger than both of the game’s first year expansions.

Little else is known about Rise of Iron at this point, but we’ll be sure to share as soon as we know more!

RiseofIron

Briefly: I know a lot of folks who somehow missed out on the first couple of games in the Arkham series, simply due to not having a new-enough console (or a computer powerful enough) to run them.

Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City remain two of the very best titles in superhero video games, and are some of the very best games of the last generation.

Soon, those who missed out on the first two titles in the celebrated series, and those who are simply looking for an excuse to play them again will get their chance, as Warner Bros. Interactive has finally announced the long-rumoured Batman: Return to Arkham, which features Arkham Asylum and Arkham City remastered using Unreal 4.

Both games are their ‘Game of the Year Edition’ versions, featuring all of the extras and DLC released for each title. Along with the engine update, models, environments, and lighting have all been upgraded, so these already very pretty games should look better than ever.

You can take a look at the trailer for Return to Arkham below, and be sure to let us know what you think! Return to Arkham hits PS4 and Xbox One on July 29th for a cool $49.99.

After a seven year wait, the Sound Four are finally coming to the Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm series as part of the Storm 4 DLC pack 3.

As the four elite bodyguards of Orochimaru, Sakon/Ukon, Jirobo, Kidomaru and Tayuya made their debuts towards the end of Part 1 of the Naruto anime and manga. Serving as foils to Kiba, Choji, Neji and Shikamaru as their squad attempted to stop Sasuke from defecting to the enemy side, each member of the villainous group has their own unique abilities, all of which are on full display once they step foot into the game. Previously appearing exclusively as support characters, fans have been pleading for these characters to become playable, so it’s good to see that CyberConnect2 is finally answering the call.

In addition to the four new characters, DLC Pack 3 will also come with three new Combination Secret Techniques in the form of the Sound Four’s “Ninja Art: Underworld Formation”, Zabuza and Kisame’s “Seven Blades of the Blood Mist”, and Zabuza and Haku’s “Cold Assault of the Demon Blade”, ten Ninja Info Cards, 10 Matching Voices and 10 costumes from past games in the Ultimate Ninja Storm franchise. Check out the trailer below to see all of these new moves and fighters in action!

After a year of delays and months of silence, we’re finally getting Mighty No. 9 on June 24th… Assuming you wanted it on consoles.

In an announcement to backers that echos our story from last week, the team behind the controversial Kickstarter funded action platformer that’s set to be a spiritual successor to the Mega Man series has gone gold, with a final release date of June 24th. Acknowledging the plethora of problems that have plagued the project for longer than any publisher would want to admit, Keiji Inafune, the father of Mega Man and project lead behind MN9, posted the following message to his backers and fans:

To all of our backers and fans of Mighty No. 9,

Firstly, I would like to say again how sincerely sorry we are for how long we have kept all of our fans waiting. We are finally able to deliver some long awaited news regarding Mighty No. 9. We have now confirmed the following release dates for Mighty No. 9: June 21st 2016 (North America & Asia) and June 24th 2016 (World Wide). We understand that as a result of the various delays we have disappointed and let down our fans, but we are happy to finally be able to deliver the game to everyone who brought us this far.

With the game having “gone gold” we are in the last final stages of being able to deliver it into your hands, be that via your favorite retail outlet, or via digital channels.

Therefore the release date we are announcing is set in stone and there will be no further delays for the game.

Portable versions for PlayStation® Vita and Nintendo 3DS ™ will follow at a later point.

It has been almost three years since the start of our Kickstarter campaign, which was only made possible through the support of our backers and fans around the world. This is a project where everyone’s passions were combined in order to create something very special, and we are looking forward to delivering the final product to everyone who was involved. There can be no stronger connection between game creators and game fans.

Now that the dust has settled, we will be delivering Mighty No. 9 to everyone next month. How long will it take you to clear the main story on NORMAL? How many people are going to be able to clear MANIAC mode? What is going to be the fastest record for the time attack mode? We are looking forward to seeing the community answer all of these questions for us! Make sure to let us know your feedback and thoughts on the game through our SNS channels as you play the game. Your voices are what made this game possible, and we want to continue hearing what you think so that it may influence our future endeavors. “

Unfortunately, gamers who wanted the portable version will still have to continue to wait. The call for community interaction at the end of his statement is comforting, but after delaying the game for so long for a bonus feature like Multiplayer, (a feature that was added to a single player game as a Stretch Goal and was largely seen as a cool bonus rather than a game defining mode,) the multiple supplemental Kickstarter campaigns despite raising far more than their initial goal, a huge visual overhaul compared to what was shown in the concept art, radio silence after the latest delay, and working on side projects like an anime and other games while this one was continuously put on hold, we’ll have to see if it’s enough to win back the faith of the community.

What say you, Geekscapist? Are you excited about the game finally releasing, or are you long over it?

Briefly: Back in January when I reviewed Oxenfree, I noted that the title was far and away the first standout title of 2016.

Now, a few months have passed, the game is still one that I talk about and think about regularly, and Night School Studio has just announced that in May, another platform will have an opportunity to experience this gem.

Yep, Oxenfree is making its way to PS4 on May 31st.

It’s not just a plain old port either. The PS4 version of Oxenfree is being labelled as a ‘Director’s Cut’, and features a slew of additions that will also make it to the Xbox One and Steam versions of the game later this May.

The most exciting addition has to be the New Game + mode, which is “a surreal continuation of the story of Alex and her friends on a decommissioned military island and offers new locations and additional endings that serve as an extension of the story. Upon completing the story once, players are met at the start of a new game with fresh dialogue choices and a creeping sense of deja vu. With this feature, players will be able to further change the supernatural events of Edwards Island and the spectres that inhabit it.”

The PS4 version of the title also sounds just a little more immersive, as Night School Studio notes that the “PS4 version of OXENFREE will use the DualShock®4 controller like the supernaturally charged radio in the game, syncing color glow changes on the light bar and playing broadcasts through the controller’s speaker.”

Oxenfree is a title that I’d implore you to give a shot if you haven’t already, and that now goes for you too, PS4 owners. Take a look at the PS4 announcement trailer below, and let us know what you think!

Oxenfree is a supernatural thriller about a group of friends who unwittingly open a ghostly rift. Play as Alex, a bright, rebellious teenager who brings her new stepbrother Jonas to an overnight party on an old military island. The night takes a terrifying turn when you unwittingly open a ghostly gate spawned from the island’s cryptic past. How you deal with these events, your peers, and the ominous creatures you’ve unleashed is up to you.

While not the most stellar line-up (especially after this month gave us Sunset Overdrive and Saints Row IV) Xbox’s Games With Gold for May still has some notable titles you might want to check out.

Xbox One owners start off the month with Defense Grid 2, which will be available all month. After that, they’ll be able to SUIT UP for adventure with Costume Quest 2 from May 16th to June 15th. Xbox 360 users get a completely different set of games as always. From May 1st through the 15th 360 & One users can take to the streets in Grid 2, followed by the original Peggle from the 16th to the 31st.

What are you looking forward to the most this month? Comment below and tell us.

Briefly: Jake just published his review of the second episode of noir adventure Blues and Bullets, and now we’ve learned that the title won’t be Xbox exclusive (console wise) for much longer.

Yep, on April 19th, A Crowd of Monsters will launch the first two episodes of the beloved, underplayed title on Sony’s console.

In the game, “When one day children start to disappear and the police just turns a blind eye to this, Eliot decides to take justice into his own hands and find, by any means necessary, the culprit and bring him to justice.”

Jake’s thoughts on the game (read his first episode review right here) definitely got me interested in the title (that I had sadly not heard of at that point), so I’m beyond excited to finally give it a shot!

Take a look at the PS4 announcement video for Blues and Bullets below, and be sure to let us know if you’re excited!

When news hit that Platinum Games was working on a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game, was anyone surprised when the nerd stratosphere blew up with excitement? After all, Platinum is one of the premiere action game developers today, which was proven the last time they collaborated with Activision by way of Transformers: Devastation. Knowing what the team could do with our favorite turtles, we jumped at the chance to get our hands on the upcoming brawler at Wondercon. If there was any doubt in your mind that they could repeat the magic with another licensed property, rest assured. The game is great so far!

My biggest worry going into the TMNT: Mutants in Manhattan demo was that it wouldn’t be as unique as it could be. After all, regardless of how fun Transformers was, it was essentially a re-skinned Bayonetta. While there are admittedly few games you would rather have serve as the basis behind your game, there were times when the robots in disguise didn’t feel like themselves because of it. This is not the case with the turtles, with mechanics that felt all their own, while playing up to the strengths of the franchise.
TMNT Mutants In Manhattan Screen 1
Somewhat less reliant on combos compared to Platinum’s other games, Mutants in Manhattan focuses more on teamwork between the four turtles. With the option to switch between Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello and Raphael on the fly, each one has their own set of attacks to unleash on the Foot Clan. To differentiate them even further, each one has their own set of special attacks that range from damage dealing onslaughts to support abilities like replenishing health with a pizza party. Depending on who’s in the fight, you can even unleash double team attacks to send the enemies packing.
As you would expect from the developer, the enemies aren’t exactly pushovers either. While they go down easily enough, it’s easy to become overwhelmed by the multiple enemies coming at you at once, each one color coded to signify different attack patterns reminiscent to the Konami games of our youth. The turtles’ health drains quickly, so a handful of mistakes can mean your team might drop in numbers quickly. Perhaps keeping in mind that this game will likely be targeting kids first and foremost, it’s very easy to being fallen comrades back, especially since they’ll revive on their own if you hold out for long enough. Even if you all get defeated, a button mashing pizza eating mini game will revive everyone to the point where they were beaten. This might disappoint the hardcore crowd who enjoy the punishing difficulty Platinum is known for, but knowing them, there could be options to boost the difficulty in the full version.
TMNT Mutants In Manhattan Screen 2
Most surprising at all however, is what happens between fights. The city stage that I played had the turtles traversing New York in a more open ended way than we would expect from a beat em up such as this. While not completely free roam thanks to clearly defined boundaries, players will move from objective to objective in a non-linear way thanks to the city offering multiple paths. Going off course and searching a little closer can even lead to hidden items, so it’ll be worth it to explore every corner you can.
If I didn’t have enough reason to be excited about TMNT: Mutants in Manhattan, my time with the game made sure to leave me with plenty. Its co-op focused battle system, (whether you’re playing with someone else or not,) is intriguing while the addition of exploration was a welcomed surprise. The toned down difficulty might concern the Platinum Games faithful, but so far, their unique take on the turtles more than makes up for it.
Check back for our full impressions when Mutants in Manhattan releases on May 24th.

On top of streaming the game for the past two weeks, Jackbox Games has another exciting announcement about the highly anticipated Drawful 2.

According to a Polygon article, the game will feature the ability to create user generated prompts for your game, giving the game nearly endless replayability. The devs comment on how this was a very requested feature from fans that they’ve decided to implement this time around. Check out the original article for a bit more in depth detail! Drawful 2 will be launching this spring for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Will you be trying out this new feature? Tell us in the comments below.

A few months back, we profiled A Crowd of Monsters’ latest project, Blues and Bullets. This episodic thriller puts you in the shoes of a retired detective who has recently picked up a case involving missing children, an occult cult, and, you guessed it, Al Capone.

Blues and Bullets works very much like a Telltale game in that all of your decisions will have residual effects by the end of the series. It’s art style and original story is a breath of fresh air. Seriously, if you’re interested in picking up an indie game, Blues and Bullets will not disappoint. Check out the trailer for episode 2 below:

Episode 2: Shake The Hive, sees players don the coat of Eliot Ness once again, as he dives deeper and deeper into the conspiracy that he discovered in Episode 1. Players can expect to visit diverse locales including a submarine, learn more about Eliot’s past, meet new characters, explore more complex crime scenes, and enjoy improved gun combat. As with Episode 1, the players’ choices will have an impact on the storyline and culminate in a gripping cliffhanger.

Blues and Bullets episode 2 is out now for the Xbox One and PC at $4.99 / €4.99 / £3.99. Playstation 4 owners can expect to see episode 2 hit the digital marketplace later this April.

Well, that’s a way to start off a week.

Today on social media they announced that Titanfall 2 is in fact real and will be releasing for Xbox One, PC, and even PS4. No other details were given other than that the game is said to have a story mode this time around. The ending teases more info at E3, so it’s fair to say that we’ll probably see this announced at the EA Play event this year. Are you excited for Titanfall 2? Tell us in the comments!

Xbox fans were in for a treat during tonight’s episode of Fear the Walking Dead, because along with the episode there came a brand new trailer for Gears of War 4. The trailer showcases JD, the son of Marcus Fenix, running away from something while the trailer flashes back to when he was young boy. Check out the trailer below, and get ready to play the beta starting April 18th if you’ve played Gears of War Ultimate for Xbox One or Windows 10. If you didn’t pick up the ultimate edition then fear not, as the open beta begins April 25th.

https://youtu.be/o3f8VgQ_dqk

Gears of War 4 will be released worldwide for Xbox One on October 11th.

The fourth release in the Doom franchise is right around the corner, and the folks over at Id Software are really putting the hype train into full steam.

Their latest offering is this slick “live action” trailer. I say “live action” in quotes, because it’s really just an actor in power armor running around a green screen, BUT GOD DAMN if it doesn’t get me excited!

DOOM hits store shelves May 13th on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.

Big news today on Xbox One Front!

Today, Phil Spencer the head of Xbox has just announced that anyone will be able to turn their Xbox One into a dev kit for the system. The best part? You can do it right now! FOR FREE!! How awesome is that? Now those aspiring to become devs for the console no longer have to dream of it. What do you guys think of this announcement? Will you try your hand at developing for Xbox One now that any console can become a dev kit?

April is shaping up to be a really good month for Xbox Live gold members. Throughout the whole month of April, you’ll be able to pick up the complete 1st season of Telltale Games The Wolf Among Us for free if you’re a gold user. After that, you’ll be able to pick up and cause some carnage as Insomniacs Games Sunset Overdrive blasts its way to gwg from April 16th to May 15th. Not interested in those? Not a problem.

This month’s backwards compatibility games are also very solid. First, from April 1st through the 15th you’ll be able to relive the horror of EA’s Dead Space all over again. Then from the 16th to the 30th, you’ll be elected president in Saints Row IV. What do you think of april’s line-up? Will you be trying out any of these games? Let us know in the comments!

The future of gaming is here. This is literally, a big fucking deal.

Announced today on the official Xbox Blog. Chris Charla, the director of Xbox’s GDC presence, announced a myriad of things you can expect to see at this years Game Developers Conference. Arguably, the most important one is the Cross Network Play.

Cross-Network Play
First, in addition to natively supporting cross-platform play between Xbox One and Windows 10 games that use Xbox Live, we’re enabling developers to support cross-network play as well. This means players on Xbox One and Windows 10 using Xbox Live will be able to play with players on different online multiplayer networks – including other console and PC networks.

Of course, it’s up to game developers to support this feature, and Xbox Live players will always have the option of choosing to play only with other Xbox Live players. We’re thrilled to confirm that Psyonix’s Rocket League will be one of the first games to take advantage of this new capability by enabling cross-network play between Xbox One and PC players, with an open invitation for other networks to participate as well.

This is EXTREMELY exciting news. The way Chris punctuated the statement is what everyone should be excited about. “…open invitiation for other networks to participate as well.” is a nice way of saying, “Hey Sony! Lets bury this shit and lets our gamer’s game!”. This isn’t the first time Microsoft has dabbled with cross platform play. If you remember way back in 2007, they attempted to bridge the Xbox 360 and PC market with their online shooter, Shadowrun. It failed miserably, mostly due to the fact that players on the PC had an inherent advantage over their controller wielding counter parts. Yes this go round their putting Windows 10 in the forefront, it’s the possibility that users on OTHER consoles can join in on the fun.

I hope that Sony will get on board with this, and developers will start patching their games! Getting the Xbox One and PS4 Destiny, The Division, Rocket League, etc. etc. together is going to be HUGE. HUGE!

Chris goes on to discuss their Indie Game support, as well as allowing their XNA framework an open source option for Xbox One.

After being in development for well over two years, Microsoft has decided to pull the plug on the free to play Fable Legends, with apparent plans to shut down Lionhead Studios altogether.

In a statement, Microsoft Europe General Manager Hanno Lemke discussed their plans going forward for the legendary studio once helmed by the controversial Peter Molyneux, as well as their planned closure of Press Play Studios, the folks behind the Wii, (and eventual multiplatform,) favorite, Max and the Magic Marker.

“After much consideration we have decided to cease development on Fable Legends, and are in discussions with employees about the proposed closure of Lionhead Studios in the UK,”… “Additionally, we will close Press Play Studios in Denmark, and sunset development on Project Knoxville.”

Lemke went on to say,

“We have nothing but heart-felt thanks for the members of Lionhead and Press Play for their contributions to Xbox and gaming. We are committed to working closely with those affected by today’s news to find them new opportunities at Xbox, or partnering with the broader development community to help place them in jobs elsewhere in the games industry should they desire.”

This news is very unfortunate, especially because both studios have had a hand in some incredible games over the years. Especially in Lionhead’s case, it’s hard to believe that the studio behind some of the biggest games of the Xbox and Xbox 360 generations would end up in this position. Yet, once you consider that Fable Legends was taking such a drastic turn compared to its predecessors, as well as the somewhat tarnished reputation earned by their former head’s habit of over promising while under delivering, the idea of the studio fading away isn’t completely unheard of. Still, Legends looked pretty much done a year and a half ago when we saw it at Comic Con, so there must have been some real trouble behind the scenes for it to get cancelled after so long.

Here’s to hoping for the best for anyone who’s affected by the news.

Briefly: We’ve already seen some insanely cool cars for Psyonix’ Rocket League, from the DeLorean, to the Xbox exclusive Armadillo (Gears of War) and Warthog (Halo).

Today, the developer announced the next DLC vehicle available for the title, and it’s tied to one of the most anticipated movies of the year: Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Unfortunately, it’s not an invisible jet… but it’s still pretty freaking cool. Starting on March 8th, for a cool $1.99, you’ll be able to drive the Batmobile (or put a Batman, Superman, or Wonder Woman antenna flag on your favourite ride).

The car looks cool, and the game’s a blast (you are playing Rocket League, aren’t you?). Take a look at the Batmobile trailer below, and let us know if you’ll be picking it up!

Another month brings another set of Games with Gold!

Briefly: Quantum Break is the reason that I bought an Xbox One (well, that I bought an Xbox One for the second time).

Remedy Entertainment’s previous endeavor, Alan Wake, was one of my favourite titles of last-generation, and as such it would be impossible for me to ignore such a striking, unique-looking title.

Today, Microsoft debuted a brand-new, awesome trailer for the title, and also revealed some other exciting Quantum Break news. First up, trailer time:

https://youtu.be/d4or8YE-6P4

Yeah, we know. It looks cool as hell.

Well, the Quantum Break package just got better. Every copy of Quantum Break for Xbox One will come with a full-game download for Alan Wake for Xbox 360, plus its two add-on packs, The Signal and The Writer. Better yet, pre-order the title, and you’ll also get a copy of Alan Wake: American Nightmare.

Microsoft has also revealed that the game will launch on Windows 10 day and date with the Xbox One version of the title. The company notes that they want customers to “play the games they want with the people they want on the devices they want,” so pre-ordering the title will also net you a free Windows 10 version of the anticipated title.

Of course, for those of you that haven’t yet jumped on the Xbox One bandwagon, Microsoft will be offering a new Xbox One bundle,  featuring a 500GB Cirrus White console and matching wireless controller, a full-game download of Quantum Break and a full-game download of Alan Wake accompanied by The Signal and The Writer add-on packs.

Quantum Break aims to offer an extremely “unique experience; one part hard-hitting video game, one part thrilling live action show, featuring a stellar cast, including Shawn Ashmore (“X-Men”) as the hero Jack Joyce, Aidan Gillen (“Game of Thrones”) as his nemesis Paul Serene and Dominic Monaghan (“Lord of the Rings”) as Jack’s genius brother, William. Quantum Break is full of the vivid storytelling, rich characters and dramatic twists Remedy Entertainment are renowned for. Your choices in-game will affect the outcome of this fast-paced fusion between game and show giving the player a completely unique entertainment experience.”

Damn, I cannot wait to play this game. Are you looking forward to picking it up? Sound out below!

In 2006, the first Naruto video game came to the West alongside the anime’s localized debut with the GameCube’s Naruto: Clash of Ninja. Over the years, countless sequels, spinoffs, and alternate series from a wide variety of developers and publishers would be released, with the definitive experience finally settling on the Ultimate Ninja Storm series. The Playstation exclusive branch of the wildly popular franchise has wowed us for years with its incredible graphics, mind blowing boss battles that oftentimes surpass the source material, and a huge roster that’s grown significantly over each iteration.

With the manga’s conclusion in 2014, it was a matter of time before the games would reach the finale as well, eventually being forced to take its bow as one of the most consistent anime to video game adaptations in both quality and faithfulness. Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 is said to be the last game in the Storm series, wrapping up the story of Naruto and his friends with its current console generation debut, upping the wow factor in ways that will definitely leave an impression. Yet, for all the things that it does right, nagging issues from previous entries still keep the game from being a premiere fighter. Still, Storm 4 goes above and beyond to give fans of the series the sendoff they deserve.

If you’ve played a Storm game before, the basic set up of the 3D fighter is the same now as it has always been. Set with a diagonal, behind the back camera perspective, each fighter has sets of land and air combos, special moves, (ninjutsu,) and super moves, (secret techniques,) the latter two of which can be customized in nearly every mode. When you consider that the cast is made up of over 100 different ninja, that becomes a whole lot of content to discover, which is exciting every time you pull off a new attack thanks to the amazing anime inspired graphics that bring it all to life, (but more on that in a bit.) As with Storm 3, countering with your substitution jutsu has its own bar rather than subtracting from your chakra, allowing a maximum of four successive counters before you’ll find yourself stuck in a combo without a way to escape. Adding an extra layer of strategy to the fights, it’s important to avoid getting caught in situations where you have to draw on your counters before you find yourself taking a pummeling. Once you’re on the brink of defeat, overcharging your meter activates your temporary Awakening Mode, which can range from a boost in power, to a full on transformation, changing your character to a gigantic beast, which can turn the tide of battle while acting as a mind blowing display of how good CyberConnect2 has gotten at bringing the show to life.

In addition to other techniques such as maintaining and charging your chakra to pull off special moves and stronger versions of standard attacks such as throwing shuriken, dashing towards your opponent, and performing double team attacks with one of your two potential partners, Storm 4 mixes up the formula with some new combat options to keep even the best ninja on their toes. Most noticeably, the new tag mechanics change counter attack lets you push back any attack when an overzealous opponent is charging at you. With a simple tap of the shuriken button while guarding, you’ll pay a quarter of your chakra bar, (as in a quarter of the bar temporarily disappears, and cannot be charged for a certain amount of time,) to keep yourself in an advantageous position.

Once you’ve mastered the art of combat, there’s nothing left to get in your way when it’s time to jump into the Story Mode, which is where most of the game’s visuals shine through. No longer broken up by the standard free roaming mode, (which would be kind of hard considering most of the world is destroyed at the start of the game,) the story starts off with a bang thanks to the ancient conflict between The First Hokage, Hashirama Senju, and the current big bad, Madara Uchiha. After a boss battle that looks and feels so grand, you would think it’s the game’s last fight instead of its first, it flashes forward to right where Storm 3 left off, right before the masked man’s identity is revealed in his first fight with Naruto. Here, the action slows down a bit in favor of mostly standard fights, although we occasionally get rail shooter and beat em up inspired stages to give us something special in between battles.

Most fights are bookmarked by long cutscenes that move the story along at a decent pace. Yet, these scenes constantly kept me enthralled rather than take me out of the experience, partially because of the fact that this game is the first time that the finale of the series has been animated and voiced. Then again, I use “animated” loosely, since the majority of the scenes are just still shots from the anime with voice overs over them. Ironically, the anime’s overabundance of fillers worked in the game’s favor eventually, since all the scenes that take place after the anime’s current storyline are fully animated with the in game models. For anyone who is worried about how well the ending plays out, fear not. Everything is here, from the end of the war, to a SNES-era Final Fantasy level ass pull with Kaguya’s debut, all the way up to the fateful fight between the two leads. Aside from a small amount of censorship, everything from the animations to the voice acting and the over elaborate quick time events that blows away the action of both the manga and anime, serving as a satisfying conclusion to Naruto and Sasuke’s tale.

Although the story sticks close to its source material, sometimes, this isn’t for the better. As if trying to emulate the anime itself, there are a TON of flashbacks, to the point where even when I was really into the story, I was getting tired of the big finale being largely relegated to a glorified slide show. While I do appreciate that each chapter has a time estimate for how long you’re going to be watching, it made me miss the free roaming sections that broke up the action in previous story modes. For better or for worse, free roaming has been separated into its own adventure mode which takes place immediately after the final battle. As Naruto, Sakura and Hinata, the three ninja travel to iconic locations throughout the series on various missions that trigger flashbacks of some of the Hidden Leaf Village’s greatest battles. Here’s where you finally get an excuse to play as those characters who you completely forgot about in between all of the Infinite Tsukuyomi nonsense. I’m talking Chiyo vs. Sasori, young Naruto vs. Young Gaara during the Chunin Exams, and so many “memories” as the game calls them, essentially serving as a Naruto retrospective as the finale settles in. Of course, you can also play the Adventure Mode before finishing the story, but why would you do that?

However, like the Story Mode feeling tired with no breaks, Adventure Mode falls even harder in this sense. The free roaming content was never particularly good in past games, with very little interactivity with your surroundings, but at least you had the story to will you forward. What can only be described as constant filler content, there are no real stakes involved to keep you enthralled when it comes to getting absorbed in the world you’re exploring, leaving you with shallow feeling side missions to fill time. If only CyberConnect2 would not have stagnated in this sense and eventually gave us something more akin to Ubisoft’s highly underrated Xbox 360 exclusive Naruto games in terms of exploration, then Storm 4 would have been the perfect package. Sadly, free roaming failed to evolve like the rest of the series has.

Thankfully, the Online Mode is where the game feels like it has grown the most, which is fantastic since the Vs. modes are where the meat of any fighting game lies. Aside from your typical Vs. and Survival Modes, which offer various modifiers that can either help or hinder the player, the online play is the best it’s ever been. Not only does the mode allow all of your customized fighters carry over like in previous games in certain match types, but the overall experience feels much more fleshed out with various incentives to play. Including special events that come with bonuses when you play during certain times, or daily log in bonuses for extra money and Ninja Treasures that can be exchanged to unlock one of the near countless items to earn, you’ll always have a reason to log on outside of beating down other ninjas from around the world. On that note, the online play itself seems leaps and bounds better this time around, which is a huge step up for a series that’s always been marred with crippling lag. In my case, (as the Geekscape Games listeners can attest to,) I have horrible connection speeds. Yet, every match I fought was either as seamless as if I were playing on the couch, or with barely noticeable input lag that I couldn’t blame my losses on. Despite it taking so long, I’m glad the final Storm game finally got it right.

As commendable as these improvements may be, Storm‘s biggest hurdle from the beginning is that its fighting mechanics are shallow. Yes, the tag and counter features add more to an admittedly improved package, but it’s not enough for it to stand out as anything more than a really good anime fighter. All Jinchuriki, (tailed beast hosts such as Naruto,) will have a giant transformation. Almost all Sharingan users, (like most of Sasuke’s seven versions,) have a Susano’o form. Aside from puppet users, (who each feel similar as well,) every character feels relatively similar to one another, despite the 100 + character cast outside of their standard ninjutsu and animations. Even then, roughly 20% of the roster are just alternate forms of the same person. So here’s to hoping you really like Naruto, Sasuke, Obito and Kakashi, because they could make a fighting game with just the different versions of those four and have a roster that rivals the total character count of other games in the genre. Unfortunately, its game play doesn’t measure up in the same way. What’s worse is that some of this repetition could have been alleviated by the extra team attacks and characters that are locked behind the DLC paywall, but alas, it’s 2016. DLC is expected at this point, although locking away attacks for sets of characters that are on the standard roster feels a bit low.

Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 Review Screen 1

As my time with Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4 drew to a close, the amount of content to play though both by yourself and with friends, the cinematics and graphics that often left me in awe as it wrapped up this eight year tale in satisfying fashion, and the highly entertaining combat, (despite its shallowness), are all more than enough of a reason to pick this up. While its flaws with the sameness of its cast, overuse of still frames to tell its story, the separation of the free roaming and campaign segments, and locking content that’s already in the game behind a pay wall are all apparent, its refinement of what works while vastly improving its online component make this final Storm game the best by a long shot. Non-fans will get a kick out of its incredible presentation, while long time Naruto followers will find the sendoff that the franchise deserves, riding into the sunset on top. So take a bow, CyberConnect2, because Storm 4 has set a new benchmark for what games based on anime should be.

Final Score: 4.25/5
