*WARNING: POTENTIAL EARLY GAME SPOILERS*

As fun as open world crime games can be, I’m kind of over the typical formula that most of them take. From Grand Theft Auto IIIThe Godfather: The Game and the first two Mafia games, each of these are examples of a title that asks the player to go through the motions as a low level mobster who climbs through the ranks to become one of its top members. This fatigue left me skeptical of Mafia III‘s ability to change my mind, figuring that it would be more of the same. One look at 2K’s Mafia themed E3 booth told me otherwise, which was only furthered by the details that would be revealed over the course of the conference. Once my time seeing the game in action was over, I went from having little interest to seeing it become one of my most anticipated games of 2016.

E3 2016 Mafia III Screen 2

Yes, at the start of the game, you’re a low level member of a mob. Except this time, instead of joining the Italians, you’ll be part of the black mob in the fictional town of New Bordeaux, (inspired by 1960’s New Orleans). At least, that’s the plan. But it’s clear early on that the Italians are just as vicious in 1968 as they were in previous decades, wiping out their supposed allies in the process. As Lincoln Clay, the sole survivor of the black mob’s eradication and a Vietnam veteran who had just found a place to call home with the group, he’ll gather the enemies of his friend’s murderers and embark on a quest for revenge that will see the Italians get taken down piece by piece.

Even without all the details though, you’ll know you’re right outside of the 1970’s with an authentic feel, which includes speedometers, interiors and architecture that feels right out of the era. Serving as a mostly untapped time period within this genre, watching Mafia III in action felt instantly compelling because of it, not shying away from some of the more controversial topics at the time. With Vietnam being a guaranteed theme thanks to Lincoln’s background and hints at civil unrest due to the anti war sentiment rising throughout the country, at least one of the Italian lieutenants that you’re asked to take down was even hinted at being part of the Ku Klux Klan, showing in game renderings of a cross burning. As a black character, it will be interesting to see how far the game is willing to delve into the dark side of history at the time, especially while being fresh off of the Civil Rights movement.

E3 2016 Mafia III Screen 1

But history aside, the reason why most of us play these games are to shoot up hundreds of bad guys and feel like a bad ass while doing it. New Bordeaux is divided up into districts, each of which is controlled by a different lieutenant that’s responsible for a different racket. Much like the early Assassin’s Creed games, Lincoln must gather information across a variety of missions before he can approach each target. Allowing players to choose between using stealth, starting shootouts or going in with a group of loyal AI partners to help you fight off enemies and escape with your life, we’re promised multiple ways to approach the same situations.

Once the territory is taken however, that’s where the real fight begins. It’s up to Lincoln to divide up the claimed parts of the city between his own three lieutenants, each of which have as much of a grudge against the Italians as you do. Cassandra, the leader of the town’s Haitian gang, Thomas Burke, who runs a local scrapyard when he’s not leading the Irish gang, and Vito Scaletta, the Mafia II protagonist who is aiding Lincoln after another stint in prison, (and an attempt at a normal life), each give you missions and support when out on the field, which can be called upon at various points in battle. At the end of the day though, they want power just as much as you do, which is why intense negotiations take place once each district is completed. The three underbosses will plead their case as to why you should give them your newly claimed land, each with different in-game benefits to go with the choice. The characters will remember what you’ve picked in the past, guilt tripping you for neglecting them while using their past success to convince you to pile more on top of them. Keeping in mind that you’re working with criminals, shunning one too many times can lead to them turning on you, unlocking bonus missions where you have to put their potential coup to an end before it gets started. Your choices will determine if you’ll ever come across one of these scenarios, but it’s definitely looking like the game will be worth playing multiple times to see the various scenarios play out.

A new setting, a new time period, a new approach to taking on missions, and a new level of consequence that comes with your choices. After learning what we have, is there a reason NOT to be excited about Mafia III? Check out the E3 trailer below and get up to speed, then let us know in the comments what you’re most looking forward to when the game releases for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC on October 7.

At the Ubisoft Lounge during this year’s E3, I had the opportunity to play a short demo from the company’s new working title, For Honor!  For Honor is a game where the central gameplay focuses on a battles between Knights, Samurai, and Vikings in a war-torn world.

The demo jumps you right in the middle of the action where you’re trying to protect a fortress from oncoming invaders.  The demo is tutorial based, so everything happens as is necessary to learn the essential functions of the game.  The focus in particular is placed on movement, and combat.

First, you will find that movement feels really heavy.  This doesn’t have to be a bad thing–considering the soldiers are full clad in body armor, it almost seems appropriate for them to have a heavy feel.  You start as a higher ranked knight, and you can truly tell the difference between your character and the armies that surround you–you almost tower over the lower ranked knights.

FH_Screen_Portrait_the_Warden_E3_160613_230pm_1465808435

One of the first fights places you in a sparring match with an enemy knight of the same rank.  The combat system is based on blocking and counterattacking–by mimicking your opponent’s stances, you can block their attacks and then follow up with attacks of your own.  There are buttons you can press to break their guard as well.  Some of the combat is reminiscent of the sword battles in Assassin’s Creed 2, before they started giving you extra tools of the trade to make combat easier.  It requires a lot of focus–at times you may stand there for even a minute straight, waiting for your opponent to make the first move.

You won’t always have to be forced into this one on one combat system, as the “small fry”, or lesser enemy soldiers, can be felled by one quick swipe of your sword.  It can feel exhilarating taking out a horde of smaller enemy soldiers as they rush towards you.  It’s also worth noting that environmental hazards can change the combat, such as taking damage by trying to walk through fire.  And like most other games, you can replenish health by grabbing and using the items as well.

FH_Screen_Action_The_Warden_E3_160613_230pm_1465808439

The graphics are great, but may be defined based on the platform.  I believe I was playing it on PC using a controller similar to an Xbox One’s (I’m about 90% sure of that).  I never noticed any slowdown when many enemy soldiers were coming towards me, the graphics and texture of the bricks and stones on the fort showed great detail on age and weather, and even the battle scarred armor was pristine in its presentation.

For Honor looks like it’s shaping up to be an interesting swords combat and war game!  And I’m sure it’ll be even more interesting when we’re able to freely try each of the factions against each other, with contrasting swordplay styles!

2 Years ago Jackbox Games released The Jackbox Party Pack onto the world. The game contained 5 unique multiplayer party games that made use of the person’s phone, tablet, or PC. One of those 5 games was a small little title called Drawful. The game consisted of players using their devices to draw (usually badly) images of a random odd word given to them. After that, the other players would get write what they think the picture looks like, resulting in them having to find the real title of the picture amongst a sea of false answers.

The game became a breakout hit, so it’s pretty inevitable that the game would get a sequel. Well, Drawful 2 is finally here for the masses to consume, but has Jackbox Games added enough to make the game stand on its own? Time to find out!

Drawful 2 Menu

The first thing you’ll notice when you boot up Drawful 2 is that you have 2 different options for gameplay now.  You still have the regular play drawful mode, but now due to an over abundance of suggestions, players are now finally able to create their own custom prompts using the brand new make your own game feature. This allows you to do just that, and it’s just as fun as it sounds. You can create entire custom episodes with custom names and prompts, and even share them online with other people. This is just one of the many great new social media features that really helps strengthen the game’s community.

Drawful 2 Custom

Custom prompts aren’t the only new thing to Drawful 2 though, as you can now draw not only with 1, but 2 different colors! This feature may have seemed a bit silly to talk about when the game was initially announced, but it really does make a big difference. Adding a 2nd color to the mix really helps keep the pictures from looking completely stagnant and helps add an extra layer of creativity onto the pictures.

Drawful 2 game

But wait! That’s not all. In tradition with making their games as stream friendly as possible, the game now includes a wealth of streaming options such as extended timers, twitch log in integration, and even the ability to censor unruly players and trolls trying to dampen the experience. Also going back to social media, one of the most surprisingly fun new additions is now being able to look at a gallery of all the drawings at the end of the game and being able to share them over Twitter (maybe make a future update that also allows people to post to Facebook also.)

Drawful 2 Censor

Now, even though I adore this game for all that it’s done right so far, there are sadly a couple of complaints.  These mainly have to do with the fact that I encountered multiple servers crashes and errors during my play time with the game. I’m confident that the team over at Jackbox is working hard to resolve these issues, and that most of them could have been due to a large amount of people trying to access the servers at once, but it was still enough to disrupt us enough to where I had to reset the game at one point in order to access the game again.

Drawful 2 Server

Conclusion:

Drawful 2 is yet another gut busting party game that’s sure to become a main stay during your family game night. The new social media and streaming features are a very welcome enjoyment, and the ability to use 2 colors as well as make your own custom prompts helps extend the overall replayability of the game as well as strengthen its community.  The only thing currently holding the game back right now is it’s inconsistent connection errors, but hopefully that’ll be getting fixed soon.

Final Rating: 4/5! Buy it!

While the show was going on this week, some of us couldn’t make the trip into the heart of downtown LA, and some of us couldn’t find the time to try out the sequel to a beloved Halo title, Halo Wars 2. Whether you haven’t had the time, or are simply out of hard drive space (we’ve all been there), I’m sure you’re still at least a little curious to how a RTS title holds up on a console.

halowars2_1

First, coming from a die-hard Halo Wars fan, I was excited to see what the folks at 343i had in store for the franchise. Halo Wars was introduced to the masses at a time where the future of Halo was uncertain. At the time, in 2009, we had heard rumblings that Bungie would be signing off after what ultimately became Halo: Reach. To make matters worse, Ensemble Studios, the developers behind Halo Wars and a couple of future Halo-related projects was shut down shortly after being acquired by Microsoft. Sure we got a couple of DLC packs post launch, but Halo Wars went relatively untouched for the remainder of its life. Today, it’s a backwards compatible title with online capability, and it’s still something I enjoy playing with friends. So, along with Ensemble’s demise, and the demise of a green-lit Halo MMO title, the future of this particular RTS was one giant question mark.

haloMMO

Last year, the Halo Wars franchise had a breath of new life. 343i made it very clear that the Halo Wars campaign story was not lost on them, and its lore was used in a variety of other mediums Halo has since conquered. Most recently, the logo for the Spirt of Fire, which was the main UNSC ship in Halo Wars‘ story, showed up in Halo 5 as a weapon skin. Characters related to the lore created by Halo Wars was also briefly mentioned in Halo‘s comic book series. By now, it would seem that 343i and Microsoft are full steam ahead on expanding Halo Wars.

halo wars 2

All of this got me excited to try the game out, something you can do yourself by downloading the open beta today. Fans of the previous iteration may notice a couple of tweaks to the gameplay that feel, well, unnecessary. For instance, tech levels and base levels are now one in the same. Halo Wars 2 has done away with reactors and instead developed a sort of currency you build up to advance your tech level and research new units. This change may not be welcomed to those who prefer to just build reactors instead.

halowars4

The game does look pretty. New sound effects and unit looks are a welcomed update. This still being in beta, the game’s look is all up from here. There are some units introduced to the game that were missing from the previous installment too. One of these units is the Sniper unit that is available when using Captain Cutter in the beta. Each unit clearly has an ability which can be countered by other units, depending on who chooses who when the game releases. Along with new ground units, we are also treated to new air units. Fans of Halo will most definitely recognize Banshees in the air, but there are also new air vehicles that, well, look weird. Most of the fan favorites appear to be back. Any Halo Wars veteran will tell you how great it is to attack a base with nothing but marines equipped with flamethrowers.

halowars2

As for the heroes, only two were available in the beta. Captain Cutter reprises his role as the default UNSC hero, while a Brute, who I suppose was the same hero in the first Halo Wars, takes a more prominent role for the Covenant. What’s also new is that each hero has a sort of skill set assigned to them. For example, Captain Cutter is described as more of an attack hero while Atriox is described to have defensive units. Obviously, gamers will pick heroes that work best for them, but the unit differentials employ a greater sense of strategy than the first game.

halowars3

While every unit wasn’t available in the beta, understandably so, Halo Wars 2 looks to redefine console RTS’ for the better. With the Halo franchise behind it, they might just do that. Unfortunately, Halo Wars 2 seems to have lost something that made the first magical. Still, with his being just a beta, I am completely open to changing my opinion when the game comes out.For now, I’ll stick to playing the first Halo Wars, which is now backwards compatible on the Xbox One.

Halo Wars 2 is set to release February 21, 2017.

Most people say that they don’t care about the story when it comes to their fighting games. I am not one of those people. While discovering more about my favorite characters through their endings has always been a motivation of mine, few storylines over the years have endured as long as the war between Kazuya Mishima and his father, Heihachi. After numerous false deaths, fake outs, revivals and clonings, Bandai Namco is promising that the upcoming Tekken 7 would be the final battle between father and son, dubbed the Mishima Blood Saga. When you consider that Street Fighter‘s Akuma is part of the story on a mission to kill both of them, we have plenty of reason to believe death will stick this time.

Usually, crossover characters are bonuses, generally separate from the story presented in the main game. This isn’t so with Tekken 7, since Akuma’s purpose for entering the King of Iron Fist Tournament is to honor a promise he made to Kazumi, Kazuya’s mother and Heihachi’s ex wife, vowing to kill them if their war ever got out of hand. Considering a demon as powerful as Akuma owes her a favor, it’s no wonder that the Mishima matriarch serves as the big bad this time around. In battle, Akuma feels like an authentic Street Fighter character, having his own Super Meter, super movies, fireballs, and special attacks that can be strengthened in their EX versions.

E3 2016 Tekken 7 Screen 1

Not to ignore the rest of the cast, each of the characters that make up the nearly 30 character roster, (which includes five newcomers aside from Akuma,) have the unique fighting styles and combos you would expect from the Tekken series. The biggest additions to combat this time around are the changes to the Rage system, with two new types of attacks that each fighter has at their disposal. Activated once a fighter’s health drops below a certain point, Rage doesn’t provide as much of an attack boost as it used to. Instead, new Rage Arts give the characters a one time use special attack that can help turn the tide of a losing battle in exchange for the use of the Rage for the rest of the round. Ranging from powerful super attacks, to full on transformations in the case of characters like Kazuya, and you’ll have a whole new dynamic thrown into the competitive mix. When considering how environmental damage, juggles and destructible floors already come into play, you’ll have plenty of ways to try to take out your enemy before they can use their Rage Art.

If you do find yourself on the defensive and need to create some space, the new Power Crush attack should go a long way to help you out. Somewhat similar to Focus Attacks in Street Fighter 4 or Counter Attacks in Pokken Tournament, these attacks can absorb damage while allowing the attack to push through, even when getting hit. As someone who has found themselves on the wrong end of a long combo string in the past, I’m more than willing to give this new attack a shot despite changing the game’s dynamic somewhat. After all, there’s no fun in getting beaten by long combo strings without a way to fight back, which is an issue the Power Crush is trying to alleviate.

E3 2016 Tekken 7 Screen 2

All in all, Tekken 7 both looks and plays like a dream, making the wait for its early 2017 release date that much harder to bear, (Kuma?) Topping off the improvements to the story and battle mechanics with the best visuals the series has seen to date, complete with dramatic slow motion knockouts and the coolest Vs. screen I’ve ever seen, it’s good to see the team putting the Unreal Engine 4 to good use. If you haven’t seen the Tekken 7 story trailer from Microsoft’s E3 press conference, watch it here, then let us know what you’re most looking forward to when the final chapter in the two decade long father-son battle is finally released.

Tekken 7 will release for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Windows early next year.

With each new Dead Rising game, the zombie beat em up finds new ways to get even more insane each time. Being able to craft weapons and mount guns onto vehicles in previous games was insane enough, but what happens when you throw in a super powered Exo Suit, Christmas themed weapons, and a city that’s much larger than any one before it? You get Dead Rising 4, which might have been the most fun I had playing a game throughout the entire E3 convention. Oh, and did I mention selfies?

Dead Rising 4 marks the return of Frank West, who has stepped aside as the series protagonist since the original game graced our consoles in the early days of the Xbox 360. Deciding to return to Willamette, the same city that housed the mall that served as the first game’s setting, our favorite zombie slaying reporter arrives just in time for Christmas. Unfortunately for him, another zombie outbreak plagues the city, forcing Frank back into action as he battles the undead with a ton of new weapons to play around with. The best part? Each one is just as crazy as you would expect.

E3 2016 Dead Rising 4 Screen 4

Going all in with the Christmas theme, most of the new weapons featured in the free for all demo included a grenade launcher that shot exploding tree ornaments, a pair of giant light up presents that could be used as boxing gloves, and a candy cane crossbow to name a few. There’s something satisfying about beating down hundreds of zombies with giant presents, or any way to tear them apart in humiliating fashion. Speaking of which, you can’t have Frank West without needlessly taking pictures of everything in the middle of the apocalypse, which is photography makes its big return. Attempting to take scary, violent or even sexy pictures is still as strange as ever, but as recent years have taught us, you aren’t really apart of an incredible moment if you don’t take pictures of yourself there. With this in mind, Frank can now take selfies, adding a hilarious touch to an already over the top game, especially when you start changing his facial expressions with the analog sticks.

But lethal Christmas gifts, weaponized cars and electric go karts aside, Frank’s biggest weapon this time around might be the Exo Suit. By putting this on, not only does he look like a male version of Capcom’s forgotten P.N. 03, but he gains a huge boost of strength in the process. Suddenly, the world becomes his weapon, allowing him to pull parking meters out of the ground and using them as clubs, punch cars into the distance while mowing down any zombies that are unlucky enough to be in its way, and use weapons that would otherwise be too heavy to use. These games have never shied away from being absolutely silly, which is why this suit felt like a great addition to already insane game.

E3 2016 Dead Rising 4 Screen 5

Keeping in mind that Willamette will be several times bigger than Dead Rising 3, and will include the ENTIRE mall from the first game as part of the game’s open world environment, all while promising more zombies on screen at once than any game before it, and is there any reason not to be excited for when Dead Rising 4 releases for the Xbox One and PC in time for the holidays? With so much carnage to look forward to, we can’t wait to find Frank West under our trees, as the series’ original zombie slayer returns to take back his town. Who’s excited!?

Earlier this week, Jackbox Games stealthily announced the release date for the highly anticipated party game Drawful 2.

A couple of days ago the company updated their website to say that the game will be arriving this week on June 21st! Not only that, but they also released a new trailer! Drawful 2  will be available for Xbox One, PS4, and PC and will include tons of new features such as the ability to use 2 colors at once, a win streak to earn more points, options to censor rude players when streaming, return of the family filter and extended timers, as well as much more! Check out the trailer and comment below telling us what your the most excited for in Drawful 2!

Last week, Microsoft held their annual E3 Press Conference, and with it, they finally rose the curtain a bit more on Rare’s anticipated pirate adventure game Sea Of Thieves.

The cinematic sheds a bit of backstory onto the game and hints at exciting features that you’ll be able to experience such as ship battles, treasure hunting, and of course, kraken battles. All this to the beautiful tune of a sorrow song very reminiscent of the sea chantey What Do You Do With A Drunken Sailor? While the game has no solid release yet, studio head Craig Duncan has confirmed that they want to put the game into closed beta soon so that fans can finally experience it. Sea Of Thieves will launch for Xbox One and Windows 10 in the future.

I never new I wanted something more than I want Trials of The Blood Dragon. It’s literally two things squished together that, on paper sounds dumb as hell, but once you see it moving. It’s incredible.

The over the top world of Blood Dragon and the top notch motorcycle racing of Trials.

They’ve left the realm of motorcycles to! We’ve got jet packs, moon cars and even parkour with pistols!

Trials of The Blood Dragon is out NOW on PC, PS4 and Xbox! GO DOWNLOAD IT! I am.

Just Dance 2017 is set to release this October!

Continuing on with our E3 stories, what may have been lost in the crowd is Steep. It’s a game that belongs to a seemingly unique genre. I mean, have you heard of an Open World Action Sports Game before this?

Steep is one of those titles that will appeal to people who go into GTA with friends and spend the night racing golf carts, airplanes, and everything in between. I imagine this game to be wildly fun with friends. I especially got this feeling when watching Ubisoft’s walkthrough of the game.

If the video is too long for you, at least fast forward to 2:46 for a good laugh. Am I a bad person?

Today, at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), Ubisoft® announced the development of Steep, an action sports game set in the open world of the Alps. Steep is scheduled to be released December 2016 on Xbox One, PlayStation®4 computer entertainment system and Windows PC.

With development led by Ubisoft Annecy,* Steep drops players onto the peaks of mountains, with exhilarating experiences that include skiing, wingsuiting, snowboarding, and paragliding. These sports establish an incredible level of freedom to explore the game’s open world, allowing players to choose the way they travel and play. Steep’s vast playground offers a wide range of activities that give players the opportunity to discover, compete, pull off crazy stunts, and more. Players can meet with friends from all over the world to create unique and memorable moments.

In Steep, players can use the innovative trail feature to relive their most inspiring rides and trailblazing achievements, and share them on social networks with friends. Along with sharing ride replays, players can also use this feature to challenge friends to outrace them on a shared path, create epic stunts or set out to discover the massive mountain playground.

“Along with Ubisoft Montpellier and Ubisoft Kiev, we used our significant online and multiplayer expertise to create a game that captures the excitement and adrenaline we feel when we explore the snowy mountains surrounding us,” said Rebecka Coutaz, studio manager at Ubisoft Annecy.

“We love seeing videos of adventures and stunts that riders from all over the world share on social media,” added Igor Manceau, Creative Director at Ubisoft. “Steep’s open-world and wealth of multiplayer activities were built to inspire this type of creativity. We can’t wait to see what players will discover and share when they first experience Steep.”
In addition to exploring the Alps, Steep riders will be able to travel across the world and traverse the majestic slopes of Alaska, available as a free update after launch.

Steep is set to release this Winter!

After a logo/trademarking move, it looks like we have full confirmation. Gwent, the fictional card game from The Witcher series is getting its own release. Check out the announcement trailer below.

When the leak first came out, and what the trailer kind of implies at the start, the consensus was that this was going to be an analogue release. So when the announcement came out today that it was going to be an Xbox One / PC title, excitement soared.

Gwent will be a free to play game (with inevitable microtransactions and expansions). It looks like CD Projekt Red wants to go after that Hearthstone money.

Check out the press release, and instructions how to sign up for the beta, below!

In GWENT, you’ll clash with your friends in fast-paced duels that combine bluffing, on-the-fly decision making and careful deck construction. The game is played over a best-of-three series of rounds, as players unleash their hand by slinging spells and diverse units with special abilities and use clever tricks to deceive their opponents.
Sign up for the Closed Beta here today!
GWENT will be available at release for Xbox One, PC and PlayStation 4, GWENT is a free to play game that puts you, not your cards, in the center of the action.

Heading into the Microsoft E3 2016 conference, we were expecting to be wowed by your usual suspects. Your Gears of War 4‘s, and Halo Wars 2‘s of the world definitely left an impression, but none more so than We Happy Few, a first person horror game where you’re trapped in a community filled with people who are drugged into a state of false happiness. When watching the trailer, let’s just say we’ll have plenty of trouble sleeping tonight.

As a character who obviously has something wrong with him, it was immediately apparent that something was off. Everyone he comes across has a false albino face, with fashion and attitudes that you’d expect to find in a 60’s sitcom. It’s not until your supposed family convinces you to break open a “pinata” that you realize you just cracked open a dead animal. Nothing is right in this world, and refusing to take your happy pills threatens to destroy their false utopia. As a “downer,” your character is tasked with escaping these happy few, who are out to eliminate anything that could get in the way of this illusion.

This trailer showed off a very intriguing take on the foundation of narrative driven  first person titles such as Bioshock, and has the potential to leave a strong impression on us once its released. I mean, if a few short minutes during the trailer managed to shock us so bad, imagine what the full product will be like!

We Happy Few looks like it could be one of the surprise hits of E3, but what do you think so far? If you really want to do this to yourself, you can watch the trailer again and share your thoughts, and be sure to check back with us as we deliver all of our news and previews from the event.

One of the major focuses at Microsoft’s E3 2016 presentation was its implementation of the Xbox Play Anywhere program, an ecosystem between the Xbox One and Windows 10 where game saves, progress, achievements and even purchases are shared between both versions, including digital copies of the full games. Announcing that Gears Of War 4 would be the first release to be included as part of this program, that might be enough reason for some to consider picking up the fourth game in what is considered one of the Xbox’s premiere exclusives. But then we saw the trailer, and realized it didn’t need it, because it’s clear how good this fourth game is starting to shape up.

Playing as a new squad years after the conclusion of Gears of War 3, the team takes on a new threat called The Swarm. Showing off a variety of enemies in their ranks, it wasn’t always enough to shoot through their grunts to progress. In what was the most welcomed improvement that I could make out throughout the footage shown, you’ll have to rely on wit as much as firepower to overcome your new foes. Using pieces of the environment like a catapult to wipe out an enemy blockade or shooting beams that get blown into unsuspecting soldiers adds a new layer to the familiar formula. New weapons like a buzz saw launcher continues to show positive steps forward, all while the co-op campaign, impressive visuals and realistic weather effects round out what’s looking like a game worthy of the hype. It doesn’t help when you’re greeted by old man Marcus Fenix after a job well done either!

Well, that’s Gears of War 4! And I have to say, what we’ve seen so far looks very promising. What do you think about the Xbox Play Anywhere program, and is the next Gears game on your radar as the October 11 release date draws closer? Comment below and share your thoughts, and be sure to check back throughout the week for our hands-on impressions of the game.

Have you ever wanted to design a custom control without having to pay large amounts of cash for custom mods or shipping your controller to someone you don’t know? Microsoft is counting on the chance that you do, because the company announced the Xbox Design Lab during their E3 press conference, where you can custom order your own Xbox One controller.

Retailing at $80 for a custom controller or $90 to have your GamerTag engraved onto the front, the service boasts over 8 million possible styles to use when making your new control your own. Based on the new controllers launching with the Xbox One S, these creations will also include better range, bluetooth connectivity and back grips for that extra comfort. Now, whether or not paying extra for your own controller when standard versions cost about $60 is up to you, but personally, I would kill for a bad ass controller with my tag on it. That’s InuJoshua by the way.

Any orders placed by the end of August will start shipping in September, but you can prep your order in advance here. Are you planning on playing your games in style, or is the standard controller good enough for you? Share your creative ideas with us in the comments, and make sure to check back in with us as more news comes out of E3.

E3 2016 is coming out the gates with a huge bang. The Micrsoft Presser today has certainly shown improvements over last years lack luster event.

The most interesting thing to come out of today’s event is not the Xbox One Slim, but the announcement of Project Scorpio.

Scorpio is Microsoft’s version of the model refresh from Sony, Playstation 4.5/Project Neo.

Phil Spencer detailed the announcement, stating that Scorpio will bring true 4K graphics to the home market, with “6 Teraflops of power”. Now, the teraflop is an interesting way gauging the power of the new Xbox. Teraflops don’t always equal faster though. A Teraflop is the ability for a system to perform a trillion floating point operations a second. TL;DR more FLOPS, means more math can be done at once which usually equates to better graphic rendering, since all those shiny polygons are just maths. No word as to the actual CLOCK SPEED or the RAM, which should actually make for a better idea of performance. They probably don’t have a final spec’d out device ready. This upgrade will bring HD VR support as well.

Project Scorpio will also allow gamers to play the same games across all platforms, Xbox One, Windows 10 and Project Scorpio. Cross-platform play is also in the works.

We can expect to see more info at next year’s E3 as Microsoft isn’t planning on releasing Project Scorpio until 2017.

We’ve known about Tekken 7 for over a year now, but we still weren’t sure if it was going to release on platforms outside of the Playstation 4. That uncertainty was squashed during Microsoft’s E3 press conference as the next King of Iron Fist Tournament was confirmed for both Xbox One and PC with an extra surprise in the form of its story mode.

More surprising than the story mode itself, was the reveal that Akuma from Street Fighter would be part of it. Not relegated to a simple guest character, series bad guy, Heihachi, is confronted by Capcom’s demon as they brawl within a temple that’s burning to the ground. Not only is the special care taken to get Akuma authentically represented instantly apparent thanks to his fireballs, EX meters, and Raging Demon  finisher, but the story fight in itself was looked incredible. Integrating QTE’s into the middle of a match is another interesting design choice, which will ideally bring a level of excitement to help the narrative stand out from your standard one on one bout.

Alongside this announcement, franchise producer, Katsuhiro Harada, took the stage to announce that Tekken Tag Tournament 2 would be available for free as a backwards compatible Xbox 360 title all week for Xbox Live Gold members. Featuring the largest roster in Tekken history, the 2012 game is the perfect way for Xbox owners to get caught up ahead of the seventh game’s early 2017 release.

If nothing else, this trailer and reveal is a reminder of what could have been if Tekken X Street Fighter was ever released. How do you think this story mode will pan out, and how hard are you refreshing the Xbox Live Marketplace to claim your game? Share your thoughts, (and GamerTag,) below so we can get some games going!

Dampening the surprise a little bit thanks to a previous announcement, most of us knew Halo Wars 2 was on its way. What we didn’t know was that we would get a chance to play it a lot sooner than we thought.

Starting today through June 20, Xbox One gamers will be able to participate in a Halo Wars 2 beta, giving them limited access to the game’s core features about eight months prior to its February 21 release date. The team at 343 Industries did a great job of hooking us right before the big announcement, since the teaser trailer, (which can be viewed below,) did a great job of introducing its new characters while setting the stage for such a massive conflict.

For those who are unfamiliar, Halo Wars was an attempt to bring Real Time Strategy games that have been popularized on the PC to consoles, featuring the popular characters and units from the main Halo franchise. Receiving a certain level of acclaim in its own right, it wasn’t enough to keep Ensemble Studios, the talented team behind the popular Age of Empires franchise, from being shut down. Because of this, many thought we would never see a Halo Wars sequel until 343 and Creative Assembly took the reigns.

After what we’ve seen so far, let’s just say we’re happy that this revival is happening. Eventual Xbox Play Anywhere support will allow cross play and cross save support between console and Windows 10, allowing us to keep the fight alive no matter where we are. What say you, gamer? What are your thoughts on Halo Wars 2, and will you be online this week throughout the game’s beta period? Sound off below!

With so much buzz surrounding Dishonored 2, the follow up to 2012’s surprise hit, we knew Bethesda would touch on it during their E3 press conference this year. What we didn’t know was how great it would look in motion, building on what was an already popular game with new powers and abilities to eliminate your targets with.

As one of two supernatural assassins, Dishonored 2 is clearly hoping to build on the strengths of the original by allowing players to approach taking out their targets in a variety of ways. The gameplay trailer alone shows off how our protagonists can summon mystical powers to make enemies their playthings, attack them with traditional swords and guns, or even avoid direct conflict altogether by utilizing the game’s stealth and hostage mechanics, all while taking place in a unique setting that blends industrial society with the world of mysticism. If you couldn’t tell, it’s looking like there will be plenty to enjoy no matter what your play style is when Dishonored 2 releases in on November 11 of this year on the PS4, Xbox One and PC.

If you haven’t had a chance to watch the trailer, do it now and tell us what you think of Arkane Studios’ next entry in the Dishonored series.

When you think of sports games, the last thing that will probably spring to mind is their gripping narratives. As seen during EA’s E3 2016 press conference however, that might soon change in the upcoming Fifa 17.

Titled The Journey, the campaign will place you in the cleats of Alex Hunter, an up and coming Premiere League player who was just brought in to one of many possible teams. The Journey looks to examine his rise through the ranks, including how he copes with his new found fame and how the pressure of having so many eyes on him will take a toll on him both on and off the field in ways that we would never have expected from an annual sports title. Just one watch of the trailer makes it seem like we’re watching a drama instead of playing a game about kicking a ball around.

Promising to allow Alex to play in any Premiere League club with authentic managers and alongside some of the best players in the world, this mode is obviously hoping to bring a level of authenticity to this story in a way that might only be possible in a video game. Still, I can’t help but laugh at the idea that this game is getting a story, yet Titanfall, also released by EA, didn’t. Good thing they’re fixing that with the sequel.

Are stories in sports games a good thing, and will you Fifa fans ever play it instead of trash talking your friends after a hard earned goal? Watch the trailer and let us know what you think!

One of the main criticisms that held the original Titanfall back was its lack of a true campaign mode. Respawn and EA are looking to address that with Titanfall 2, with a story focused trailer that debuted during their E3 2016 press conference.

Focusing on a Titan who’s pilot was killed in action, the perspective switches between the behemoth robot and its new perspective pilot as it does everything it can to protect its new controller from being shot down on the battlefield. Showing off some of the new environments, visuals, abilities and characters, Titanfall 2 seems like it’s doing a good job with fully integrating what we learned about this world in the first game with an actual narrative to dive into.

The original game was some of the most fun I had during the early Xbox One days, so integrating that gameplay with something for us to do when we don’t feel like being yelled at by strangers online can only be for the better. This sequel looks fantastic in motion, so I can’t wait to head over to the convention and try it for myself. With the game making its PS4 debut when it releases alongside its Xbox One and PC versions on October 28, it might be hard which version to pick! Especially with the collector’s edition on the market.

What are your thoughts on the campaign, the last game’s lack of one, and the second game as a whole? Sound off below, and make sure you watch the trailer while you’re at it!

Briefly: Haven’t played Skyrim yet? Or just looking to sink another 1000 hours into this endless world? Bethesda tonight revealed that a remastered version of Skyrim will launch on PC, PS4, and Xbox One this Fall.

Of course, the game’s graphics and presentation have been starkly improved (just look at that trailer), but the new edition also includes all of the game’s DLC, and will even offer mod support on consoles.

The company also announced that “If you own and all its add-ons or own Legendary Edition on Steam, you’ll get a free upgrade to Skyrim Special Edition on Oct 28.”

Take a look at the trailer below (along with a couple of other announcements), and be sure to let us know if you plan to re-buy this one. As someone who never really got into Skyrim, I’m more than ready to give its expansive universe another shot.

The latest in the Deus Ex series is really shaping up to blow the franchise out of the water.

The recent live action announcement trailer really invoked some powerful feelings. Reminiscent of the first two shorts from The Animatrix.

One of the devs from the upcoming Mankind Divided walks us through the newest element of the game, the city hub. The launching point of missions, interacting with NPC’s and character building. Check it out below.

Get your first glimpse at the city-hub of Prague in Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, an expansive and dense location which will allow players to meet a variety of characters, take on side-quests, and explore indoor and outdoor areas. For the purpose of this demo, we activated infinite life, energy, and ammo.
In this section of the game, set in the poor district of the city, Adam Jensen wakes up after being caught in a devastating attack, allegedly perpetrated by augmented extremists, which is causing his augs to malfunction. He needs to see Vaclav Koller, an underground augmentation specialist, so that he can have a look at them and help him get back into shape.

I’m really excited for this iteration of the series. The segregation theme between augmented citizens and normal humans is one I find particularly fascinating.

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided hits store shelves August 23rd on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.

For about the past week, WB Games has been teasing fans about what’s next to come for their toys to life genre game Lego Dimensions, and today we finally got an answer.

Some of the newcomers are Adventure Time, Harry Potter, Mission Impossible, Gremlins, Goonies, and many more. Even Sonic is joining in on the fun. YES YOU HEARD THAT RIGHT! SONIC THE FREAKING HEDGEHOG HIMSELF. Not much more is known about the game whether it’s a full on sequel or just a massive expansion, but it seems like most of this stuff will be releasing this fall for PS3, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, and Wii U. Are you excited about this? What franchise do you still want to see in Lego Dimensions? Tell us in the comments below!

Briefly: Mid last-month, a leaked Gamestop promotional image revealed the next expansion in store for players of Bungie’s Destiny.

Today, Bungie officially revealed the expansion, titled ‘Rise of Iron’. The new chapter lets players “follow in the footsteps of Lord Saladin in a brand new story that culminates in an epic Raid.”

Rise of Iron will include a new zone filled with new enemies, and even marks the return of the Gjallarhorn, which players have not shut up about since it was first released.

Note that Bungie has only revealed Rise of Iron for Xbox One and Playstation 4, so it looks like players still playing on previous-generation consoles may want to think about an upgrade.

Take a look at the Rise of Iron trailer below, and be sure to let us know if you plan to pick it up!

Briefly: I hated the first Watch Dogs game.

Obviously, that first E3 trailer for the game sold me on it. It looked gorgeous, open, futuristic, with mechanics and opportunities that we’d never seen (or even thought of) in a game before. Watch Dogs was to truly be the first next-gen feeling title for PS4 and Xbox One.

Then Ubisoft released a buggy, ugly, boring Grand Theft Auto clone that I sunk about 10 hours into before realizing that I’d wasted $100.

Watch Dogs became the brunt of a lot of jokes in the early days of the Geekscape Games podcast, and while it’s unlikely that gamers will truly trust Ubisoft’s early looks at any point in the future, the publisher just debuted the very first look at Watch Dogs 2 which is set to take San Francisco (and the world) by storm when it releases on PS4, Xbox One, and PC on November 15th.

Seriously, I’m not going to be putting down any pre-order dollars on this one, but it sounds as though Ubisoft has certainly learned from the mistakes that they made with the first game, and are ready to fix them this time around. Take a look at the first trailer below, and be sure to let us know what you think!

AWWWW YEAH BOOOOOY!

During one of their weekly Drawful 2 livestreams, Jackbox Games decided to drop another massive bomb on people. In just 2 weeks they’ll be at Indy PopCon representing in a big way. On Friday, June 17th at 8:30 PM Drawful 2 will be part of the 2016 Indy PopCon  Brawl, a showdown between 8 online personalities to see who’s the best around. Not only that, but they also revealed what the final game will be. QUIPLASH 2! That’s right!, everyone’s favorite sarcastic quipping game is back with a vengeance.

Quip 2

While they couldn’t say much about the title a few things have been confirmed such as the game having custom prompts, different final rounds, a leaderboard (first in the series!), and the ability to censor answer (akin to Drawful 2.) The game will be part of the previously announced Jackbox Party Pack 3, but there’s still no release date for the game outside of a Fall 2016 release. Are you excited for Quiplash 2? What kind of crazy prompts are you hoping to make? Tell us in the comments!

As we get closer to E3, rumors have been swirling about a a potential Injustice 2 reveal. Well, NetherRealm Studios and WB Games have put the speculation to rest, because Injustice 2 is real, and it looks like it could be even more brutal than the first.

Featuring a solemn narration from an off screen voice, (who does mention being reborn after emerging from “the pit.” Could it be Ra’s al Ghul?), the reveal trailer shows mainstays like Superman, Batman, The Flash and Aquaman smashing each other through walls with enhanced strength thanks to what seems to be a new transforming armor mechanic. If you were hoping for some new character reveals to keep the hype going, the closing moments of the trailer show Supergirl protecting Batman from her uncharacteristically murderous cousin, and a younger man suiting up in a red and black Batman suit. Could it be Red Hood? Or even better… Batman Beyond?

From the little we’re shown, so many questions can be pulled from it. How will the transforming suits work in the game? Is Superman still an evil, power hungry dictator? Who is the voice in the trailer? Will we FINALLY get Black Canary and Huntress? We’ll find out more as we get closer to its 2017 release date.

Who are you hoping to see in the game, and what do you make of the trailer? Sound off in the comments, and keep checking back as E3 quickly approaches.

Some of us thought the day would never come, but here we are! After earning a cult following, the original Mirrors Edge was praised heavily for its innovative use of parkour to become a new type of first person platformer. Unfortunately, the praise didn’t equate to huge sales numbers, putting potential sequels on hold. After years of fan requests and a good ear from the folks at DICE and EA, the unexpected follow up, Mirrors Edge Catalyst, is finally hitting store shelves. We got the chance to play through the first six hours of the game to see how well Faith transitions into an open world environment, and while there’s plenty of promise, it’s easy to see how she’s stumbled out of the gate.

The first Mirrors Edge was a linear first person platformer/shooter hybrid, where the focus was on finding the fastest, most efficient way to run between your objectives while keeping up your momentum. This involved moves that were unheard of using this perspective, such as vaulting over obstacles, sliding under them, wall running and rolling. Catalyst picks up on this concept and expands on it by taking the game from a linear set of levels to the open rooftops of the City of Glass. As you travel between point to point, you’ll quickly realize that there’s an insane amount of content to sift through. Between hundreds of collectables spread out across over a half a dozen types, a seemingly endless amount of side missions, and story missions that take you into different interior environments, early impressions feel like this game will be much meatier than the first, even if the content is a bit shallow.

Mirrors Edge Catalyst Screen 1

Most of the moves from the first game return, with the notable exception of the removal of shooting. Rather than bring back the tacked on low ammo firefights, Catalyst integrates movement into the combat in even bigger ways. Giving you a weak and strong attack button, the two can be used in conjunction to take out weaker enemies. As you begin to encounter better armed guards as you progress, you’ll have to rely on your momentum to take them out.  Vaulting off of vents or jumping off a wall into a light kick for example, will usually one hit KO an enemy with a side kick that doesn’t slow you down from your continued running. Hard kicks are where the game gets especially fun combat wise however, since satisfyingly powerful takedowns sacrifice some speed for the assurance of taking out your pursuers. When you’re stopped, attacking with a hard kick and a certain direction held will allow Faith to kick enemies into whatever direction she wants, leading the enemies to stumble around with some laughably slow animations. Forcing them to bump into each other will do extra damage while stunning more than just the guy you’re beating up, but you haven’t seen anything until you see a guard do his best WWE Royal Rumble impression and visibly launch himself over a railing if you kick them into one. However, these iffy animations are more than enough of a trade off for how fun the combat can be.

What’s less forgivable is the horrendously bad texture pop in I kept experiencing. For minutes at a time, characters would have flat, blurry faces that looked like they were ripped straight out of a Nintendo 64 game. Even with the red objects and trails leading me to my next objective thanks to the game’s new Runner Vision mechanic, it was hard to tell what I was looking at until the game fully loaded, (which says a lot considering most of the city is just made up of white walls.) Matching the strange visual glitches was the awful voice acting, especially on the NPC’s who give out missions. It doesn’t help that their awkward delivery is highlighted especially well by the way they tell you their life story as you complete their missions, taking you out of the experience fairly often when you can’t help but chuckle at the way their delivering these lines.

Mirrors Edge Catalyst 3

It doesn’t help that the core story itself doesn’t do the cast any favors. Faith was essentially a mute avatar in the first game, so focusing on her past, including her motivations for becoming a runner and the mistakes that put her in prison right before the start of the game, is a step in the right direction. But everyone around her has felt hollow so far, failing to establish a reason for us to care about her teammates or her father figure. To make matters worse, Faith doesn’t come off as too great of a person either, closing out the final mission in the early access version by committing a horribly out of character act of vandalism. I won’t spoil it here, but I’m sure you’ll be scratching your head as to why she would be so willing to complete this task so readily, especially for the person she was doing it for.

Story notwithstanding, the biggest issue I had with Catalyst so far was the sheer repetition of the tasks you’re given. As a runner, Faith is responsible for delivering information under the noses of the evil corporations that have a grip on the city. So be ready to take on hours of exciting side content like… Delivering a capsule! And delivering another capsule! And delivering one that will break if you take hard landings! What makes it worse, is that most of these missions take place in the same small districts, amplifying the repetition to the point where you’ll memorize many of the routes just from the insane amount of times you’re asked to run across the same paths. Even with hidden passageways, you’ll keep finding yourself running across areas that stop being exciting fairly quickly. Maybe if there were other runners moving around the city, or police actually looking for you outside of missions, it would make things feel more alive. But throughout most of Catalyst, the environment is a barren series of blocks that exist solely to jump on, making you wonder where all the people are in this sprawling metropolis full of roof running freedom fighters. It will make you eventually bolt towards the fast travel button, effectively making you want to avoid the game’s biggest feature until you move to a new section of the city. Except, even though you have a large amount of safe houses early on that allow fast travel, you don’t actually get to use it until you encounter a certain type of side mission about three hours in.

Mirrors Edge Catalyst Screen 2

These side missions in particular however, are one of the highlights of the demo. Aside from the combat focused missions where you have to avoid enemies while staying out of sight after sabotaging their security systems, the hacking rooms that unlock fast travel will really put your platforming to the test. These puzzle sections force you to examine the environment closely, looking for a way to reach the top of the server room without setting off security. Movement is still the highlight of the experience, but it really shines when it makes you focus on the best way to use it.

After the six hours was up, I was happy that I got to spend some more time with this universe and style of game play, but I’m left running away feeling like the game would have been better off staying out of the sandbox format. Serving as a sigh that the game is severely padded with meaningless side content to hide that the story isn’t all that robust, the crazy amount of repetition manages to suck the joy out of the amazing free running while highlighting how dead the world feels this time around. With that said, the improvements to the combat and the movement itself are still strong points, making Mirrors Edge Catalyst worth a run through based on what we’ve played so far. Yet, it’s far from the next evolution in the series that we were hoping for.

Unless the rest of the game is significantly better, Catalyst is looking like a 3/5.

AWHAAAA!?!?

WHAT’S THIS!?! A VIDEO GAME DEVELOPER HAVING FUN WITH A VIDEO GAME?!? OUTRAGEOUS! Where are all the grey colors? Where are all the FPS segments? WHY ISN’T THERE A VEHICLE BUILDING MECHANIC!! All joking aside, Yooka-Laylee is shaping up to be one hell of a game. Ever since going radio silent near the end of last year, the folks over at Playtonic Games have really seemed to get their metaphorical rear in gear and now have blown all their new info out over the spans of the last 3 weeks.

Yooka Tribalstack

Today’s new trailer features Yooka and Laylee racing through many different worlds meeting different characters, pummeling baddies, and transforming into weird mutated creatures. Along with this we’ve also learned new news about the game.  It seems as though the game has sadly been pushed back from it’s initial Q4 2016 release and is now heading for a Q1 2017 release (fingers crossed for January.) Along with that we’ve also learned that Playtonic has been Internally hard at work on the Wii U and PC versions of Yooka, while Worms developer, Team 17 is working on the Xbox One and PS4 versions. Enough chit chat though, take a look at the new trailer and tell us what you think about it in the comments!
