The team over at BioWare have released Part 1 of a series of videos showing off the next in the Dragon Age series. Inquisition hopes to bring the series to the “next-gen’ (current gen) with an expansive open world and smarter AI.

Not having played ANY of the Dragon Age games, I went into this one completely blind. The combat looks “OKAY”, but I hope the character development and the open world will make up for that. Frostbite 3 looks better than ever!

A few weeks back, Persona 4 baddie, Tohru Adachi, was confirmed as a playable character in the upcoming Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, but only in Japan. Then last week, Atlus revealed that not only would the sadistic detective be coming to the West, but would be available as free day one DLC… assuming you download him during the first week of release.

Free sounds pretty good, right? Especially with all of the pack in extras that first prints of the game are receiving, such as a Teddy bag and a half set of tarot cards, (the other half will be bundled in the 3DS title, Persona Q. Those clever bastards). But if you’re still on the fence, you can always check out Adachi in action in these latest screen shots!

If our E3 coverage was any indication, P4A:U looks like it will be the fighter to beat this holiday season. With free DLC and pack in items on top of a great game, what reason is there not to give it a look? Try to think of one. I’ll wait.

Persona 4 Arena Ultimax is scheduled to release on September 30th.

Briefly: I’ve arguably been enjoying Telltale’s The Wolf Among Us even more than the amazing second season of The Walking Dead.

The developer has just announced the release date for the final episode of their Fables adaptation, and I’m feeling pretty bittersweet about it. On one hand, it’s another episode and another chance to jump into this incredible world, and on the other hand, when will we get to play more?

Telltale hasn’t announced a second season of The Wolf Among Us, but as they’re calling this its ‘first’ season, I sure hope that they’re insinuating that more is on the way. Please, Telltale?

In any case, the episode will hit PSN, Mac, and Windows on July 8th, Xbox 360 on July 9th, and iOS on July 10th. You can take a look at the trailer for the episode, titled Cry Wolf below, and be sure to let us know what you hope to see in the finale!

Briefly: Compulsion Games’ Contrast was one of the most original, unique titles that I had the pleasure of playing last year. The game hit Windows, Xbox 360, PS3, and PS4 back in November, and I didn’t even touch another PS4 title (PSN or retail) until I had explored every nook and cranny of the game. The game just hit Xbox One, and if you haven’t already played it, Compulsion says that it’s the best version of the game yet.

I had an opportunity to interview Compulsion Games’ Sam Abbot about the game earlier this year, and it was a very cool opportunity.

The game doesn’t take long to play through, but it’s totally worth the price of admission. Take a look at the Xbox One launch trailer below, and let us know if you’ll be picking it up, or what you thought of it if you already have!

It was around E3 last year when we brought you the news that a third Guilty Gear was on its way. How Arc System Works finds the time to make so many fighters at the same time, but its undeniable that Persona 4 Arena and BlazBlue both are heavily influenced by the game that put the developer on the map. Not to be outdone, Guilty Gear Xrd: -Sign- brings the series back, complete with a brand new look and the fast, frantic fighting we fell in love with so many years ago.

Featuring popular characters from past versions like Sol, Ky, I-No and Jam on top of a new, powerful character with Bedman, seeing it in motion left me feeling like Xrd just might be the most gorgeous 2D fighter that I’ve seen yet. Using 3D models that are as bright, animated and fluid as a 2D sprite, the game almost looks like an anime in motion. There were a few times that I had to double check to make sure the opening and victory screens were in-engine and not pre-rendered cutscenes.

But aside from the flash and glamour that comes with the updated visuals, Guilty Gear is still as fast, fluid and fun as its always been, and the switch to 3D models hasn’t slowed it down one bit. Playing as the two cover boys, Sol and Ky, it took me back to years ago when the series was making a name for itself in the arcades and on the PS2. All of their moves, specials and instant kill attacks make their return as well as a few new tricks, all of which are faithfully recreated in this new engine.

Fighting fans, if you haven’t seen this thing in motion, you HAVE to check out the latest trailer and be blown away with the rest of us. Thankfully, playing the console version in person proves that the game plays every bit as good as it looks, so there’s no doubt that Xrd will be at the top of my list come this holiday season.

Guilty Gear Xrd: -Sign- is scheduled for a PS3 and PS4 release at the end of the year.

Briefly: Spring has come and gone, and we’ve still heard nary a word of Grand Theft Auto V‘s online heist component.

Rockstar today released a statement regarding the fact that none have been released (again, they were originally slated for Spring), but the developer assures us that the content is still on its way. Here’s what they had to say:

For those of you asking about other upcoming GTA Online updates, we have lots more in store coming your way soon. We know many fans have been eagerly awaiting the release of the Online Heists that we had planned to release for you this spring, and they are taking more time to create than originally anticipated. We are very sorry for the delay, and are working hard to bring them to you as soon as we can. Please know that we are focused as always on making the best possible content for you to play and we are thankful to all of you for your patience, understanding and support. Stay tuned for more information on that as well as lots of other ongoing content updates, enhancements and additions to the world of GTA Online that are on the way.

I dropped out of Grand Theft Auto: Online some time ago, but the inclusion of heists would definitely get me back into the game. This is what I imagined when they first showed off the multiplayer component, and what we have now, as fun as it is, is a far cry from what it could be.

The idea of a long running RPG series turning into a fighting game isn’t all that unheard of nowadays, but it was still surprising to see the Persona titles get the brawler treatment. Still, with a continuation of two beloved RPGs combined with the fighting game mastery from the developers at Arc System Works, the original Persona 4 Arena ended up being one of my favorite fighting games. When a sequel was announced that promised to fill the roster with even more of our favorite party members, I couldn’t wait to get the chance to try them, which is why I played a few rounds at E3 to get the skinny on all the new combatants.

Yukari

A fan favorite from Persona 3, Yukari has traded in her school uniform for a power ranger-esque getup, showing off her newfound profession as an actress since her game finished. Using wind attacks to draw opponents towards her spells while firing off her bow and arrow at lightning speed, her specialty is clearly the ability to control the field while keeping her opponents away. Even as someone who’s played fighting games for more than two decades, the quickness of her shots caught me off guard, proving that she’ll be a powerful foe once the game releases.

Junpei

The bro of Persona 3. Junpei uses one of the most creative fighting styles I’ve ever seen, integrating his baseball background into his moveset with an “at bat” status that powers him up if he successfully hits opponents with his bat. Hitting moves runners up a base, while missing counts as a strike. Connecting with a super move counts as a home run, earning a run for your hit, plus everyone on base at the time. Missing too many times will eventually result in earning three outs though, which will remove everyone on your bases, so you’ll have to make each hit count. When Junpei scores 10 runs though, he goes into rally mode, significantly increasing his speed and power until he hits three outs. It’s ridiculous to explain and even stranger in action, but it definitely affected the way I approached his fights.

Ken and Koromaru

For those who have played BlazBlue, Ken and Koromaru are essentially like Carl and Ada, except Koromaru doesn’t move around like a sloth covered in honey. For those unfamiliar, this two in one character essentially plays like you’re controlling two people at once, with the buttons usually reserved for Persona attacks being mostly dedicated to Koromaru’s attacks.

The two allies fight in tandem, with Ken using his retractable spear to strike from a distance or pull enemies in while Koromaru hits hard from up close. Unlike most characters who fight in tandem with their Persona, but temporarily lose them if they’re struck a certain amount of times, Koromaru has his own small health bar. When it’s depleted, the pooch is taken out of the fight temporarily, forcing Ken to lose most of his combos and moves in the process. That’s not to say they don’t have a Persona at their disposal for additional attacks, but I found it to come into play far less than it does for the rest of the cast.

Rise

Rise is one of the most popular idols in the Persona version of Japan, and became a powerful supporting ally for Yu Narukami and the rest of the cast of P4. After somewhat playing a damsel in distress role in the first Arena game, she’s since upgraded her combat abilities to fight side by side with her friends for the first time.

Using her singing, dancing, microphone stand and her Persona, Himiko at her side, Rise ends up being a powerful addition to the cast. Relying mostly on traps and projectiles, she’s still dangerous up close thanks to her decent range, though it’s not suggested since her damage output seemed pretty low. Still, if played right, your opponents should have a hard time approaching her especially since her song abilities can cast a variety of status effects on her foe. All in all, it might take some time to learn the ins and outs of her play style, but she’s sure to become a favorite when mastered.

Sho

The new kid in town, Sho is an original character added to the Ultimax cast, who’s past and motivations are a complete mystery. What doesn’t take long to figure out however, is that he’s a vicious fighter who can do big damage in no time if his opponent is carelss. As the only character with no Persona, this gives him many more attack options for his aggressive rush down style, throwing out mix ups and combos with ease. Thanks to his dual swords, Sho hits hard, fast and is one of the most straightforward characters while still standing out as the only non-Persona user. His alternate shadow form however, introduces a Persona for him to use, making him even more deadly. By the looks of it, Sho has the tools to become a popular fighter real fast.

On that subject, almost every character has an alternate form thanks to the return of their shadows. The primary difference between the shadow and standard versions is that the shadows have more HP, do more damage and build up their super meter faster by landing hits, making them much more offense oriented. In exchange, they lose their awakening, burst and other defensive options, making them more ideal for someone who likes to bring pain instead of receive it. But with these lost abilities comes a new one, because the Shadow Rampage ability gives them unlimited meter for a limited amount of time, allowing them to do whatever they damn well please. Some of them, (like Shadow Teddy), even have new moves, like his ability to summon the giant, creepy Shadow Teddy from the main game.

Exciting? I think so. Arc System Works seems to be doing a great job of creating a unique, varied cast that even breathes new life into the characters from the first game. The original Disney Infinity left a big impression on me, so much so that I considered it my game of show at last year’s E3. With the promise of multiple single player campaigns in the form of play sets combined with a nearly limitless level designing tool in the toy box, the possibilities seemed to echo the title. Much of these impressions carried over to the actual release, although my expectations fell short in certain areas, namely the same-ness of many of the characters, how bare bones some of the play sets felt and how the game initially promised to not need sequels while possibly replacing movie tie in games with Infinity content, (which was quickly proven wrong by the 3DS’s Olaf’s Adventure and the very game we’re talking about).

Still, the game had a ton of untapped potential that a sequel could capitalize on, especially because of Disney’s acquisition of giant properties like the Marvel universe. With that in mind, playing 2.0 was a top priority for me this year, both as a fan of the original and someone who was eager to see if Disney Interactive would adapt to the comic book universe or perish in a sea of broken promises and failure to improve. After an in depth playthrough of the game’s two play sets, I’m happy to say I’m leaning towards the former.

InfinityCap

To me, the biggest problem with Disney Infinity was that the campaign style play sets mostly felt like samples of what could be done in the toy box as opposed to fully fleshed out games, (aside from the Pirates set, most of what each was built from was ripped straight from Toy Box). With 2.0, this criticism has been fully addressed, giving us a huge open world city to explore as our favorite characters. The Avengers version of New York is promising to be more than twice as big as The Incredibles, with capsule toys, side quests and story missions still waiting to be found, all put into context by a full story penned by longtime Marvel scribe, Brian Michael Bendis. It’s a huge improvement from the opening and ending cutscene that greeted us at the end of the first game’s stories.

On top of that, the increased level cap of 20 allows us to unlock between 20 and 30 skills per character, which is a huge improvement compared to the original’s puzzling decision for level ups to mean absolutely nothing aside from unlocking new Toy Box parts. Making this even sweeter was how different each character felt. Firing off trick shots with Hawkeye, throwing down with Captain America, web slinging between buildings as Spider-Man or flying through the city at top speed with Iron Man felt distinctive, as opposed to many of the first game’s characters playing or feeling exactly the same. To top it off, the heroes each have a unique super move with varying in levels of awesomeness, (like Iron Man’s missile barrage vs Black Widow’s… invisibility turning? I know who I’m not playing as…)

InfinityHawkeye

Even the original game’s characters are getting skill trees when they’re transferred into the new games, although theirs won’t be as robust as the new characters being brought in. Still, the fact that they’re getting upgraded at all is a great way to reward players who maxed out their figures despite their lackluster move sets. Plus, maybe some characters can be more fleshed out this time, specifically Anna and Elsa. The developers obviously knew very little about since they were developed before Frozen was released, so let’s hope they can be done justice the second time around.

Joining the heroes will be new power discs that were on display for the E3 demo. Aside from the Toy Box backgrounds, perks and weapons that came with the blind pack DLC of the original, Marvel’s version will also include sidekicks who fight at your side for a limited time, and costumes for specific characters. Ever get the feeling that you want to play as Captain America in his First Avenger gear? Or how about black suit Spidey? Ever wanted to fight side by side with The Winter Soldier after he blew us away in the latest Phase 2 film? Now’s your chance, with these discs that feel like a lot more than just fluff. My wallet is going to hurt.

On the mission front, both the side and story missions felt more involved, forcing me to travel through more of the city to accomplish whatever the goal was. Whether it was racing on Nick Fury’s bike to escorting a scientist to key points in the city as symbiotes were viciously attacking us, these missions made the game feel like a full fledged experience. And while some of the bonus quests I played were still ridiculously easy, some of them presented a nice challenge, like the web slinging missions that I couldn’t get better than a bronze in.

If someone would have told me I was playing the new kid friendly Marvel game and not one that’s attached to a world building simulator, I would have completely bought it. But to think that a game where the single player content is more of the side dish to the Toy Box’s entree plays so well surpassed what I expected after playing the first game. I’m not sure if it’s a testament to Infinity’s developers or a knock at the other guys when web slinging feels more fun in this spinoff than it does in a core Spidey title. My only complaints are that there were some massive bugs, causing mission sensitive enemies to teleport across the map, and that traveling with non-flying or swinging characters felt like a chore. Having to drive as Black Widow when Thor can zip from one end of the map to another in minutes leaves an unbalanced feeling.

Both areas are said to still be in development, so let’s hope these get patched up come September.

Whoa, Disney Infinity 2.0 hasn’t been announced for more than a month and we already have our second play set on its way!

Scheduled to launch day and date with the Marvel Super Heroes starter pack, (which comes bundled with an Avengers play set already), early buyers will also get the chance to swing through New York with Spider-Man, starring in his own adventure alongside some of his amazing friends.

Centered around a plot by The Green Goblin and Mysterio to harvest Venom’s symbiote, Venom clones are running rampant throughout the city, and it’s up to the web slinger to stop this latest attempt to take control of the city. Thankfully, he’s not the only one who has arrived to stop the threat, with Nova, Iron Fist, Nick Fury and Venom himself joining the fight, complete with their own figures to display when you’re not playing.

The Spider-Man play set will come bundled with the wall crawler and Nova, while the other three will be sold seperately, likely as individual characters and in a set. While details on pricing, bundles and future characters aren’t known yet, I’d be willing to bet that it would cost around $35 like the play sets for the previous games. Plus, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Goblin and Mysterio bundled with Avengers villain, Loki, at some point. After all, Randy, Syndrome and Davy Jones were all released for the first game, so it wouldn’t be too much of a shock.

After Disney Infinity 2.0 was announced last month, questions were running rampant as far as what Marvel and Disney characters would make the cut. Well, thanks to Walmart, we might have the answer… only months before it was intended.

Thanks to a recent preorder listing, the figures shown on the monster retailer’s website matches many of the figures that were recently confirmed at E3, bringing some credibility to the listing. From Guardians of the Galaxy to the recently announced Big Hero 6 and a few surprises in between, it looks like we’ll have a ton of new figures to collect throughout the next year and beyond.

This is in addition to Groot, who was already announced, rounding out the Guardians. When including the recently unveiled Merida from Brave and Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty, (who’s likely in to promote the DVD release of her self titled film when it inevitably hits in a few months), the roster is getting pretty huge, which means a shrinking wallet for us!

While seeing a GotG or Big Hero Six set isn’t surprising in the slightest, seeing characters like Tinker Bell and Donald Duck are welcomed surprises, especially considering Goofy can’t be following too far behind. The game desperately needs more Disney characters, so it’s good to see that they won’t get completely overshadowed by the inclusion of Marvel into the franchise. Yet, there are still some glaring omissions, namely Ferb, who was teased back when Fineas and Agent P were shown for the original, but has yet to be revealed, and Aladdin, who is strangely absent for a game that contains Agrabah guards, the Cave of Wonders, and even Abu in the form of an elephant. I wouldn’t be surprised if we’re just scratching the surface of what 2.0 will have to offer.

In the days preceding E3, Square Enix made official what the we all already knew. Kingdom Hearts 2.5 HD Remix is coming, though we’ ll have to wait until the end of the year to get it.

Coming December 3rd, this collection will feature the Final Mix versions of Kingdom Hearts 2 and Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep, both of which will be the first time either game has been playable in the States, (unless you’ re one of those crazy importer types). Like the first HD Remix, this go around will feature a cinematic and text based retelling of Kingdom Hearts: ReCoded, which in my opinion will probably be more fun than actually playing it. On top of getting the ReCoded recap, in case the “HD” in the title wasn’t enough of a giveaway, both games will be getting a shiny new coat of high definition paint, justifying that new flat screen purchase you may have made.

I admit that I was very cynical towards 1.5 since I felt like it was holding back content for the sake of a second release. With 2.5 on its way however, I would be lying if I said the thought of replaying Birth By Sleep wasn’t exciting to me, especially since I’ve felt it was the best game in the series since the day I played it. On top of containing Final Mix content for two games rather than one like 1.5, this game feels a little more worth the price tag for returning Keyblade Masters. But does anyone else feel like Square is holding the portable games off for a third collection? And would you be that surprised?

During Sony’s press conference last night, the company revealed that a remastered, redone version of Tim Schafer’s classic Grim Fandango is coming to PS4 and PS Vita.

No details were revealed, and no footage was shown, but it’s totally coming. Here’s the announcement:

Briefly: Many gamer’s most anticipated E3 moment was the reveal of the new trailer for Hideo Kojima’s Metal Gear Solid V.

After seeing said trailer, it’s safe to say that this game is worthy of our anticipation.

The video opens with a vulture picking on a freshly-deceased body, and it quickly delves into something much more sinister. There’s lots of blood, a funeral, and more. I don’t want to ruin things too much, so just take a look below, and let us know what you think!

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain hits PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One someday. I’ve been a huge fan of the series since I was eight years old, so it’s safe to say that I can’t wait for this one.

Briefly: It’s finally happening.

Grand Theft Auto V is headed to PS4, Xbox One, and PC. The new version of the game was revealed at Sony’s E3 press conference earlier tonight, and it looks great.

Rockstar says that “Grand Theft Auto V will take full advantage of the power of the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC with across-the-board graphical and technical improvements to deliver a stunning new level of detail. Increased draw distances, finer texture details, denser traffic, and enhanced resolutions all work together to bring new life to the cities, towns, deserts and oceans of Rockstar North’s epic reimagining of Southern California.”

It’ll include all the content that’s been released for the game so far, as Rockstar notes that “gameplay created since the launch of Grand Theft Auto Online, including an extensive array of new Jobs, an arsenal of new weapons, scores of new vehicles, new properties and player customizations will also be available for the PlayStation 4 system, Xbox One and PC with much more to come. In addition, the current community of players will have the ability to transfer their Grand Theft Auto Online characters and progression to their choice of PlayStation 4, Xbox One or PC.”

This is great. I can’t wait to buy this game again (yep, I’m one of those suckers). Take a look at the new in-engine trailer, and let us know if you’re excited.

Briefly: It seems as though everyone is releasing E3 trailers long before the show floor opens on Monday, and Oddworld Inhabitants have followed suit, debuting a gorgeous new look at Oddworld: New ‘N’ Tasty.

The ‘rebuilt from the ground up’ reimagining of 1997’s Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee has been in the works for quite some time (like 2010), and rumour has it that we’ll finally be seeing its release date at E3 next week. The game looks beautiful, and since I missed out on the classic the first time around, I really can’t wait to get my hands on this.

Oddworld: New ‘N’ Tasty will launch on Windows, OS X, Linux, Wii U, PS3, PS4, and PS Vita. Take a look at the trailer below, and let us know if you’ll be picking it up!

Briefly: The next instalment in the Mortal Kombat franchise has officially been revealed.

Developer NetherRealm Studios debuted a CG announcement trailer for the game today, which was quickly followed with official word from Warner Bros. Mortal Kombat X will make its “first public appearance” at E3 next week, and will launch for PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC in 2015.

The team over at Comcept have just put out this new update video for their Kickstarter success story, Mighty No. 9. The spiritual successor for Megaman is looking more and more amazing the further the project goes.

Amassing over Four Million USD, Mighty No. 9 is the brainchild of Keiji Inafune. He wanted to bring the best of the 16-Bit era side scrollers to today.

You can grab Mighty No. 9 sometime in April 2015, and it’s on pretty much everydamn platform including; PC, MAC, Linux!

 

Briefly: Just two days ago Telltale debuted three new screenshots from The Wolf Among Us‘ next episode, In Sheep’s Clothing, and now we have the chapter’s release date(s).

Watch Dogs is nearly here. With only 5 more days to go before we jump into the shoes of Aiden Pearce and hack all the things, Ubisoft gives us one last look with the launch trailer released today.

Besides the quotes from some websites I never heard of, the trailer has that movie-esque vibe with some decent backing music. Let’s hope that all the hype Ubisoft has been dishing out all these months is worth the wait when Watch Dogs is released on May 27, 2014 for pretty much everything except the WiiU. Nintendo will have to wait until later on in 2014 for their version.

Usually, birthday parties involve giving a gift to the one having said birthday. The hassle of finding the right gift early enough is stressful enough without having someone else get the exact same thing. Well, Blizzard finally wrapped up the festivities for Diablo III’s 2 year celebration but not without giving out a parting gift. The Legendary item drop bonuses will remain in effect for the foreseeable future.

Like we mentioned previously, the Legendary items get a 100% boost to their drop rate. We can only assume that this bonus item drop rate will come to an end around the time Diablo III: Ultimate Evil Edition releases on consoles August 19, 2014. If Blizzard really wants to be even more generous, extending the bonus for stretch after console release would be more than welcomed by all.

Briefly: After the insane conclusion of the last episode of Telltale’s The Wolf Among Us, we were itching for more content to sink our teeth into. Now, a month and a half has passed, and the developer has finally released the first screenshots for the game’s fourth episode, In Sheep’s Clothing.

The shots give us a look at a battered Bigby, a somber Snow White, and a dejected Narissa. If you know how the last episode ended (I won’t spoil things if not, but you should definitely be playing this game), you know exactly why everyone looks so down.

Briefly: Watch Dogs is finally almost here, and Ubisoft has debuted a new 9-minute ‘101’ trailer for the game that takes us through almost every facet of the experience.

The video showcases some intense action that we haven’t seen before, introduces us to some interesting characters, shows off the game’s intriguing smartphone app, and plenty more. Some of it does look a little silly however, like running away from the cops as a mechanical spider in one of the game’s ‘Digital Trips’.

The game looks like a lot of fun, and as I’ve definitely been looking for something new to play on my PS4, I can’t wait to pick it up. Watch Dogs was my “must have” title for the PS4 launch before it was delayed, so I sure hope that it’s worth the wait.

Bound by Flame would make for an amazing heavy metal band name. Picturing long flowing hair flailing around as the metallic strings of a Gibson guitar are strummed furiously amidst choke-inducing smoke from pyrotechnics is quite easy. This elaborate fantasy cobbled together in my head pleases me with hopes that it was actually real. Instead, we get the reality that Bound by Flame is nothing more than a sub-par role-playing game.

As far as fantasy stories go, Bound by Flame seems of the standard fare. With the world on the way to extinction from the Ice Lords with an army of undead, humanity’s last bastion of hope lies in the hands of the Red Scribes. You play Vulcan, a member of the ruthless group of mercenaries known as the Freeborn Blades. While guarding the Red Scribes during their ritual to end the war, things go awry and a powerful demon now inhabits Vulcan. With this demon sharing your body, you must decide if embracing the demon inside is wise or retain your humanity while saving the world. The whole good versus evil turmoil inside of Vulcan starts off great, yet falters more and more as the story progresses.

To help make the decisions to push you to either side of the moral scale are dialogue trees in Bound by Flame. With the abundance of dialogue present in the game, it can almost feel like you are playing a point-and-click adventure. The sheer amount of words I had to read could be bounded together in a three part book series. It’s a good thing that for the most part, the voice acting is adequate. Some may have an issue with the amount of cursing the characters spill out. I felt that this added to the believability of being part of a bad ass mercenary group. If action war movies have taught me anything, it’s that soldiers love to curse, a lot. The delivery of some of the dialogue can be all over the place. One moment you have perfect tone and emotion conveyed from a character. Then not a minute later, everything seems to go lifeless. Still, there is some sort of charm in how bad the voice acting can get.

Bound by Flame can look pretty fantastic at times. Everything has a cel-shaded look that pleases the eye. Views overlooking a chasm with the sun high in the sky is a stunning view. As you make your way through different areas and hub towns, the shine starts to wear off a little but manages to not degrade into something terrible or grungy looking. The same cannot be said about the character models. Everyone ends up looking too plain. The detail that went into creating the world didn’t seem to carry over to the characters. It makes believing the emotions of someone speaking difficult to relate with when the expressions and body language is wooden. The one standout thing about character models can be attributed to the transformation of Vulcan to full-on demon if you choose that path. As you let the demon take control little by little, your outward appearance starts to change into something inhuman. Horns start jutting out of your forehead, the color of your skin turns black as charred coal, eyes as red as the blood spilt by the entity inside you and flames dancing on your shoulder in delight. With these mutations, helmets can no longer grace your head and the armor worn will show damage from the scorching flames emanating from your body. Even the voice pitch of Vulcan will change to mimic what would sound like a demon possessing you.

Calling Bound by Flame an action role-playing game is sort of misleading. When I think of an action role-playing game, I think of fast movements, being able to react to enemies at a moments notice or use items instantly. Going into battle with these notions will get you killed. Even as I write this, I have a love/hate relationship with the combat in Bound by Flame. On one hand, I enjoy the slower pace of combat when I engage an enemy. Not being able to just mash attack to win, makes you think before you leap into battle. Getting the timing down to block or dodge right as a gigantic axe is falling towards your head, thus pulling off a counterattack can be very satisfying. What is not satisfying, however, is the cheap tactics deployed by the enemy AI. When enemies attack faster than Vulcan can react while ranged enemies snipe away at my meager health, all the fun is sucked out of the game. Even if you equip the best armor you can find, it seems to do little in terms of mitigating damage. However, this seems to be no issue with the enemies, being the damage sponges that they are.

Making things even worse are the two stances Vulcan can switch to on the fly. Warrior stance allows blocking, knock-backs and more powerful attacks. The Ranger stance provides a dodge mechanic, fast attacks and stealth attacks. The problem with this system is you cannot possibly switch fast enough to block or dodge when the time calls for either. Having either mechanic tied to a stance is frustrating in regards to the cheapness of enemy AI. Whether you attack, switch stances or use spells, be prepared to get interrupted and possibly knocked to the ground. As you stumble back up from the ground, it seems as though Vulcan had too much ale consumed the night before. In what seems like forever, Vulcan will finally stand up. All this would be ok, if it weren’t for the lumbering General of the Ice Lords charging your exposed guard.

Skill trees offer to make Vulcan more powerful by enhancing abilities or granting new ones. Upgrading the Warrior stance to have the ability to block from all sides, more resistant to knock-back and greater health regeneration seems great on paper. When put to use though, blocking from all sides in a group of enemies will trap you in endless attacks with no way of escaping the precious few hits Vulcan can endure. The upgrades to the dodge mechanic for the Ranger stance is also not too helpful. Even though you will get a sliver of a chance more to react, being restricted to only moving backwards is a big hindrance and negates the extra time to react. Since you will find yourself surrounded in the majority of fights, dodging a death blow only to ram your backside into the embrace of another blade is the opposite of what I want in the ability to dodge. Since a flame demon resides inside you, the magic of pyromancy ends up being the third fighting stance that you don’t need to switch to. Sadly, the demon’s flame wielding spells given to you are just as useless as most of the other skills. The only skill worth a damn was augmenting weapons with fire magic, thus increasing damage output with a chance to set a burn status with the touch of your weapon. The extra damage is nice, but with the enemies treating each hit like a tickle, it ends up being nothing more than cosmetic effect.

Having companions should help in your fight against the Ice Lords. Instead, you get the most incompetent partners I have ever seen. I would go into detail about the different characters at your choosing but it won’t matter none. From getting stuck on geometry to outright leaving you to go do whatever the hell is more important than surviving an encounter, the companions are utterly useless. Since they seem to die easier than you with no way to revive them without defeating all enemies in the vicinity, I would be better off venturing on my on.

Crafting is available, though not useful enough due to the lack of material found in Bound by Flame. In fact, the lack of loot found throughout my time with the game was disappointing. At least with what loot you can find, it enabled me to tell the shopkeepers to piss off. The weapons and armor you find are always better than the ones sold in shops. Which is great since the economy is non-existent. No matter how much you save in your piggy bank, it will never be enough to purchase that shimmering item in the shopkeeper’s window. Since crafting material is also hard to come by, recycling unused items will serve your needs better than haggling sale prices. Most of your equipment can have additional stats added to them by crafting upgrades for them. Choosing things like resistance from status effects or boosting attack speed are just some of the choices given to you. I never felt like these upgrades did much at all. Near the end, I spent what little scrap I had left to craft healing potions since those are the one thing you will use the most.

Bound by Flame wants to burn bright with the fiery passion of a great action role-playing game. It almost accomplishes this feat with mostly interesting dialogue told by the many characters you meet and combat that has a more strategical component instead of mashing your way through the battles. What turns that flame into a fizzle, however, is hard to ignore. Voice acting quality all over the place, stiff character animations, utterly useless companions, cheap enemy AI and lack of meaningful loot ends up charring any hopes of enjoyment to be had.

Briefly: The short-ass game with a ton of replayability, Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes is about to get some new content.

At launch, Sony and Microsoft platforms each had an exclusive mission. In celebration of over 1 million copies sold, a new title update will unlock and allow all users to access the Déjà vu and Jamais Vu missions, regardless of the platform you’re playing on!

Originally launched exclusively for PlayStation platforms, the Déjà vu mission, often referred to as a “throwback” mission, is based on missions from the original METAL GEAR SOLID game and lets users play as a pixelated, low polygon Solid Snake. To progress in the mission, players must recreate the key scenes. As a reward, players will see flashbacks to the previous game.

“Jamais Vu”, the Xbox platform exclusive mission, references the 1988 game, “SNATCHER,” the second video game written and directed by Hideo Kojima. In the mission, the menacing bioroid “Snatchers” are dropped into Camp Omega to kill and steal the identities of everything they come in contact with. To kill off these enemies, players need a hero other than Snake—enter Raiden, the superhuman ninja cyborg from previous METAL GEAR titles, including most recently METAL GEAR RISING: REVENGEANCE. This time, Raiden dispenses with his High-Frequency Blade in favor of heavy weaponry to completely annihilate the “Snatcher” threat.

Not everybody (well, not really anybody) loved the film, but did you know that Kick-Ass 2 is also getting a video game?

A new trailer for the 3D beat-em-up has just launched, and though the game boasts a cool cel-shaded artstyle… it doesn’t look great. Take a look at the trailer below, and you’ll see what I mean.

Briefly: After what seems like forever, Watch Dogs is finally just a month away from release.

Ubisoft has just launched an eight-minute multiplayer walkthrough for the title, which showcases some fantastic cat and mouse gameplay. According to the description, in “Watch Dogs’ groundbreaking multiplayer modes where everything and everyone is connected. Learn how Watch Dogs is blurring the line between single and multiplayer, and get a glimpse into three distinct and exciting modes including Online Hacking Contracts, ctOS – Mobile Companion App, and Competitive Decryption Combat.”

The game looks like a lot of fun, and as I’ve definitely been looking for something new to play on my PS4, I can’t wait to pick this one up. Watch Dogs was my “must have” title for the PS4 launch before it was delayed, so I sure hope that it’s worth the wait.

Briefly: Aside from a pretty awful title, this is some pretty sweet news.

The announcement of Telltale’s Tales From The Borderlands was a welcome reveal, but we’ve all been waiting desperately for 2K Games to reveal the next true Borderlands title.

Today, we got that reveal with Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel.

The game will launch this Fall on PS3, Xbox 360, and PC (no next-gen interestingly enough), and will take us (for the first time) to the moon of Pandora. According to 2K’s official blog post, the game is “Set between Borderlands and Borderlands 2, you’ll play as four new characters classes fighting alongside Handsome Jack, witnessing his transformation into the ruthless tyrant you loved to hate in Borderlands 2, and assisting with the rise of the Hyperion Corporation. The signature shoot ‘n’ loot gameplay of the Borderlands series expands with the addition of low-gravity and oxygen-powered jetpack combat, the icy ‘Cryo’ elemental damage type, the deadly laser weapon class, and new vehicles to help you explore the lunar landscape.”

Sounds like some worthy additions to the already awesome gameplay, don’t they?

The game’s new classes are as follows:

– Athena, the Gladiator: Uses her Kinetic Aspis, which is a shield that can absorb incoming damage, then convert it back into energy to use against enemies. Athena made her debut in The Secret Armory of General Knoxx DLC for the first Borderlands game.

– Wilhelm, the Enforcer: Wilhelm was previously seen in Borderlands 2 as one of the first deadly bosses in the game.

– Nisha, the Lawbringer: The sheriff of Lynchwood from Borderlands 2, Nisha will be dealing out her own brand of justice, which we’ll discuss further in the coming months.

– Claptrap, the Fragtrap: Wait – Claptrap? The goofy robot companion from Borderlands 2, now playable for the first time? Fragtrap is his character class? Well, you can play him too!

Briefly: Almost like a kind of cruel joke, Telltale Games yesterday released the launch trailer for the third episode of The Wolf Among Us… but didn’t actually give us any release dates.

Today, the developer/publisher rectified the issue with the following tweet:
