The Geekscape staff have done a great job of covering so many different aspects of what we want out of the Switch, but what about tabletop applications?

I like to play games with friends in the same room, which means hauling your gear over for a LAN party (console or PC).The gear is heavy and cumbersome (I’ve almost broken my monitor on more than one occasion), everyone’s rig takes up a lot of room, and it’s hard to get everyone into the same room without overloading a power circuit. This is one of the reasons why I love playing tabletop games, especially Dungeons and Dragons, because you can have a large (read: more than 2 or 3) friends come over and play without having quite so much hassle.

What does that have to do with the Switch? Well, I’m hoping it could mean that there will be options for tabletop gamers to use the Switch to enhance their role playing for table tops. There are some great programs already available for PC, like TableTop Simulator, and Roll20, which allow you to have your player sheet, character avatar, maps, ambient sound and music, and roll your dice, all digitally. If these programs, or one like it, could run on the Switch, it would be like creating your own RPG with your friends, that you could see on TV in real time.

There are two ways that I think this would work. The first option option would be to have one Switch that would be controlled by the dungeon master would be able to show maps on the TV, control the character placement, and could also incorporate sound effects and music. The second option would be if every player and the dungeon master had their own Switch. The players would be able to access all their player sheet, have custom spell cards, and roll dice available on their individual tablets. The dungeon master would be able to control the map display and character placement. Currently in Roll20, dice rolls are shown in a chat on the side bar, as well as on the map, so that the whole group can see how good or bad your roll is.

Custom figurines are also really popular in Dungeons and Dragons, and could possibly cross over into an amiibo option that you could integrate with the Switch, so that as your character changes and levels up, you can level up your character in game.

I haven’t been able to find anything specifically related to tabletop gaming for the Switch, however, there are some options available already for the NVIDIA Shield, and Steam Machine, so it’s not a completely crazy idea for Nintendo to add this capability to the Switch.

Here at Geekscape, we’re all incredibly thrilled for the Nintendo Switch. Going into day seven of our series of wants for Nintendo’s next console, my colleagues have all touched on some excellent points. From the importance of innovation to the horrid purchase management of previous Nintendo consoles, all the way to the ever present third party issue that’s hung over the company for a few generations now, you can read these thoughts and more here!

But my wish for the Switch is a simple one! One that might seemingly fly in the face of conventional thinking while being completely obvious at the same time. That is that third party support shouldn’t be the goal! Rather, focus on your exclusive content.

Splatoon was a creative, new take on the arena shooter genre. But it still felt like the Wii U wasn’t necessary to play it.

Let’s think about the most successful periods that Nintendo has enjoyed in a post Playstation world. The GameCube sold far less than their previous efforts, but had plenty of memorable exclusives that keep the system in the conversation when it comes to its great library. For all of the Wii’s faults, it sold tens of millions of units simply because it was so different, rounded out with software that took full advantage of the system’s capabilities. Even with Nintendo’s untouchable portable empire standing tall today, the mainstream press completely slammed the DS as a flimsy gimmick… Until developers made the most out of its dual screen functionality to help make it the best selling handheld of all time! The 3DS would continue this trend with an expanded focus on communication thanks to its StreetPass functionality that you couldn’t get anywhere else!

ZombiU revolved around the Game Pad, while Tokyo Mirage Sessions helped you communicate with your party with text messages. Two of the rare games that felt special on the console.

For some reason, the Wii U didn’t follow suit. If the console faltered anywhere outside of its advertising, it was that so many of its games felt like something you could play on any other console. As Jonathan alluded to in his piece, games like Nintendoland and ZombiU excelled because the Game Pad and its features were so vital when it came to getting the most out of those games. As time went on, what made it unique became less and less important. Even great games like Xenoblade Chronicles XDonkey Kong: Tropical Freeze and Super Smash Bros felt like any other game to an extent, ones that you wouldn’t need a Wii U to play if they weren’t made by Nintendo or its second parties directly.

Smash was a blast to play, but it hardly pushes innovation when it was literally bundled with a controller from over a decade prior.

So when it comes to the Switch, its biggest focus absolutely needs to be making its console the exclusive home for a large variety of content, even if they’re the only ones pushing that envelope. Because as a huge Nintendo fan, I’m being realistic when I say that porting games like Skyrim and Dark Souls to the Switch will make a negligible difference when the only people who will want those types of games likely already have a PS4 or Xbox One to play them on. Even though the Wii was Nintendo’s largest home console success, you STILL had many gamers balking at games like Madworld and Monster Hunter Tri because those games, “should have been on the PS3”. Regardless of its justified, Nintendo is a damaged brand, and it would take at least a decade of good faith for Nintendo to become the first choice again. You’ll build that good faith by being the only place to get the best games.

Don’t get me wrong though. Third parties still have a place in this scenario, but simply porting games like EA did with Mass Effect 3, then throwing their hands in the air and giving up because their poorly adapted game that was years old at full price didn’t set the world on fire won’t cut it. Instead of that short sighted shell of “support”, give us the old EA! Give us the one that made games that centered around the console’s features! Because while people won’t buy Madden on Switch just because, but they did on the Wii when you had a chance to chuck your controller through your TV. Or when you actually swung your golf club in a game of Tiger Woods. Hell, even when NBA Street Vol. 3 didn’t have online support on the GameCube, you better believe that was the one people bought if it meant they could play as Mario, Peach and Luigi when tearing up the court.

At the end of the day, Nintendo’s focus should be on rebuilding to show gamers and the casual audience that the Switch is THE destination for gaming. If this is going to happen, it’s not enough to just be a fourth PC with a few exclusives. It needs to push the envelope at all angles in a way that makes it stand head and shoulders above the competition. If they need to do that by themselves, then so be it. Now would be the opportune time to do it too, since the other two consoles are still primarily remaster and port machines with their exclusive content barely trickling out. So you can keep your Overwatch and Call of Duty… Unless I can play as Samus storming the beaches of Normandie or Fox McCloud (not) escorting the Payload of course.

A new Digimon game is confirmed for western release early 2017! Bandai Namco announced at their Tokyo Game Show pre-event that Digimon World: Next Order is making its way to the Playstation 4!

This is exciting news not just for fans of Digimon, but also for those familiar with the original Digmon World game released for the Playstation in 1999. While it is unknown whether or not this game is a sequel or not, news of this game is certainly exciting!

Digimon World: Next Order was originally released as a PS Vita game in Japan in March 2016. With the rising popularity of Digimon with the recent release Digimon Adventures Tri and Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth, Bandai has decided to bring Next Order exclusively to the Americas.

The PS4 edition will include updated graphics, Japanese and English voice-overs, as well as new missions. It will be available on the Playsation store for digital download.

We’re back with Loot Crate’s latest gaming crate! If you’re just excited as we are to see just what’s inside, you’re in the right place! Let’s get started:

First up on the list is a very cool Claptrap bottle opener. The bottle opener is brushed in chrome silver and has some weight to it. It’s much prettier in person. I promise.

Second item in the crate is another Loot Crate exclusive. This Deus Ex: Mankind Divided Adam Jensen Figure is not only a mouthful, but is also a pretty neat exclusive for any Deus Ex fans out there. The figure also features a special QR code at the base!

Next up is a home run for all the Destiny fans out there. This Loot Crate exclusive t-shirt features a Hunter, Titan, and a Warlock. The shirt is 100% cotton and is perfect to wear during a 10-hour raid with your inexperienced friends who desperately want in on all the raid action.

Hey! Did you hear Cliffy B is working on a new game? Well now you do! Loot Crate is helping spread the word about Cliffy’s new game, Lawbreakers. This crate features a snapback hat made of twill and sports black and red.

One of my favorite items in this month’s crate is this Bioshock patch, featuring – you guessed it! A Big Daddy! Now, aside from the fact that it’s a Big Daddy, the fact that the Big Daddy’s eyes were made using glow in the dark thread makes this patch even more awesome. Not all that great at sewing? Don’t worry! It’s an iron-on patch for all you novices out there! (For the record, I’m still too scared to apply it.)

Last, but certainly not least, is the Mecha Pin. This pin is meant to represent “the moments when our sum was greater than our parts. It features a single hand, split into two. One half is machine, while the other is human. It is made of hand-polished iron, is 2 inches thick, and has a 1.25 diameter.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably heard of Loot Crate. To catch you up, Loot Crate is a subscription service that will send you crates of geeky goodness every month. Since it’s conception, Loot Crate has expanded into creating specialty crates that are geared to fans of a specific franchise or pastime! Today, we’re looking at Loot Crate’s first Halo-themed crate!

The loot comes in a Halo-themed box, not weighing much. Upon opening, you’ll see an assortment of goodies that will please any Halo fan. First up, we have this pin signifying that you are a part of the newly formed Fireteam Apollo. If you haven’t heard of Fireteam Apollo, don’t worry. This new Fireteam is exclusive to Loot Crate and it’s goodies are closely tied to this fictional band of brothers.

The second item in the box is a long-sleeve, lightweight sweatshirt with a Fireteam Apollo graphic on it. It’s quite comfortable, but don’t expect it to save you from the rain. I’ve found it be perfect for those who don’t want direct sunlight on their arms, but want to remain cool in the process. With Fall around the corner, this was one of my favorite items.

A third item in the crate was the first of the Halo Icons. This scene is perfect for gamers who are looking to decorate their entertainment center, or their desk. It’s a good size and will probably remind of you of all the times you spawned a Hannibal Scorpion tank, only for the game to end within the next five seconds.

Another item featured in the crate is a is what the creative team is calling a Data Drop. This drop comes in an envelope and is consistent with the Fireteam Apollo recruitment theme. The drop contains letters from Thomas Lasky and Jun, two very prominent characters in Halo lore.

I won’t spoil what the letter entails, but it’s basically a congratulation and directions on where to report for your tour of duty. Also featured in the Data Drop is an X-Ray scan of a Spartan’s anatomy, which is pretty cool on its own.

The last couple of physical items included in the crate is a UNSC satchel, which is quite useful for hikes and long walks on the beach. The satchel has five zippered pockets and multiple bands for you to attach water bottles or hand sanitizer. As for me? I’ve already strapped the last item in the crate, a Mister Chief Carabiner Plush.

Overall, the first iteration of a Halo-themed loot crate is pretty awesome. If this is only the beginning, I’m expecting some big things later on!

I have had a love affair with Falcom’s Gurumin ever since Mastiff brought the action RPG to the Playstation Portable all those years ago. My PSP has since kicked it but Gurumin lives on. It has recently seen a release on Steam as well as the Playstation Vita and Playstation TV via the PS Store. To my delight, the title will soon be coming to the Nintendo 3DS as a digital release, Gurumin 3D: A Monstrous Adventure.

The game’s twitter account had an “Ask the Publisher” chat with fans  this week. They revealed that even in the handheld’s 3D mode, the game will still run at the full frame rate. The 3DS edition will also have more costumes than the previous Steam version. While only a digital release is planed at this time, should there be enough demand, a physical release would be considered. And for those purists, a Japanese voice-over DLC will be available post-release.

Gurumin 3D at PAX west

Gurumin 3D still does not have a definitive release date but given that PAX West attendees will have the first chance to play the game, you can rule out any time before September 5. In the meantime, you can check out the game’s soundtrack which is now up on iTunes. The funky fresh beats will make you prisoner of dance (wrong game?).

Attack On Titan seems like the kind of license that would be perfect for a video game, right? Based on the anime and manga series of the same name, what could be more exciting than soaring through the air and cutting down these towering giants? Unfortunately, past iterations haven’t had much success in delivering a satisfying adaptation to our screens, but that all changes with the new Attack On Titan from Koei Tecmo and Omega Force. Known for their work on the numerous Dynasty Warriors games and spinoffs, their expertise when it comes to creating large scale battles shines through with one of the most exciting games of the year, licensed or otherwise.

Closing in for the kill.

If you follow the anime, you’ll know that the show has been stuck in limbo over the last few years after its initial 26 episodes, so forgive me if the plot sounds familiar. For those who might be introduced to the series for the first time through the game, Attack On Titan focuses on the last of humanity, most of which was wiped out years before by the sudden arrival of the Titans. These seemingly mindless creatures feed on humans, and pushed those who were left behind to build a new settlement separated by three walls. Eren Jager, Mikasa Akerman and Armin Arlert, childhood friends who live within the outermost Wall Maria, have their worlds torn apart when a sudden Titan attack led by the never before seen Colossal Titan, results in the wall being breached and their parents being killed as a result. Deciding to enlist in the military as retaliation, the trio prepares to take the fight to the Titans, becoming humanity’s last hope for survival.

When looking at how easily the humans are decimated throughout the series, Attack On Titan almost feels like Dynasty Warriors in reverse. Between Attack Mode, (where the story takes place), and Expedition Mode, (side missions that focus on obtaining new materials and gear), the core game play revolves around the player stepping in the shoes of one of the Survey Corps members as they traverse one of many maps, slaying dozens of Titans while helping squad mates in need. Capturing the feel of the show and its soldiers’ unique method of movement thanks to the Omni-Directional Mobility Gear, using these grappling hooks to fly through the air at high speeds is as satisfying as it looks. The controls admittedly have a bit of a learning curve as you memorize how to grapple, speed up, lock on, focus on one of five body parts, issue orders to your squad, and close in for your decisive blow, but once it all comes together well. Cutting down enemy after enemy results in one of the most thrilling game play experiences so far this year.

Once on the battlefield, your main focus is to follow the red marked objectives to advance the story. Usually involving taking down multiple Titans, you’ll find yourself in a bad spot if you run out of gas for your gear, or if the twin swords you use for attacking wear out. All it takes is one mistimed attack, a lack of speed or a set of dull blades to be grabbed by an enemy, and if you’re not fast enough with your reactions, you’ll be food in no time. Thankfully, the field is littered with support soldiers who hand off more supplies when approached. As barbaric as it sounds however, the only way to know what they’ll give you is if you let them get eaten. Yes, much like the show, death is all around you. These NPC’s will often be killed, with a notification in the corner making you feel extra guilty about it by letting you know each time. By killing a Titan who’s consumed an ally, they’ll occasionally drop their corpse, which is marked with an icon showing which item their body will reward.

If you want someone more reliable on your team, story characters will often signal for help with side objectives, ranging from helping them turn the tides in a losing battle, escorting them to a point, or triggering traps on the field. Once aided, they’ll join your five person squad and attack alongside you, bringing more items with them and triggering traps in the process. Often stronger than the generic NPC’s you can recruit, once a squad is in your control, you can issue generic commands like having them guard you, fan out to attack multiple nearby targets, or focus on the area you’re attacking for a devastating group attack.  In typical Dynasty Warriors fashion, important characters like your side quest recruits will comically “flee” the battlefield when defeated instead of getting killed. Which is strange since getting killed usually means getting eaten, so watching your squad be swallowed and chewed only to say they were tired of fighting and retreat right afterwards, is unintentionally comical. I mean, flee to where? You’re dead, man!

Speaking of friends, while Attack Mode is strictly single player, Expedition Mode lets players team up online to take on more difficult quests for the sake of money, new equipment, and the needed materials. Each set of missions is divided by a section of the map, each of which needs to be scouted throughout its nearly 100 missions. Not restricted to the story, these quests have the freedom to offer up some insane challenges to any Survey Corps member brave enough to take them on, and while expedition missions can be tackled solo, you’ll start to regret it once the difficulty ramps up. The reward is worth the struggle though, since the only way to unlock new weapons, Mobility Gears, scabbards, and eventually horses, is by playing through these missions. On the flip side, you can only unlock new characters for this mode by progressing through Attack Mode, so you’ll want to play both side by side if you want to steadily progress without trouble.

And while the assumption would be that each character would be exactly the same, Attack On Titan does a great job of making each main character feel unique, playing up their character strengths. Eren obviously has his Titan Form, where he can temporarily transform into one of the monsters and tear them apart with some basic melee combat abilities, but when characters like Levi and Mikasa feel significantly better at sword fighting thanks to their unique abilities, or Armin making up for his lack of strength by being the only person who can issue individual orders to his squad thanks to his tactical brilliance, each playable character delivers a small, yet noticeable difference to how you’ll approach combat.

In both Attack and Expedition Modes, you’ll wind up with extra material drops by attacking marked limbs on Titan bodies, or earning an S rank at completion. Coming off as simple enough at first, obtaining S Ranks often felt more frustrating than it was worth. Finishing the stage fast enough and addressing enough side requests were both fine, but it’s easy to get knocked down a rank because you didn’t kill enough Titans. In my confusion, I noticed that in many cases, you’ll have to hunt down and kill nearly every Titan on the map, no matter how out of the way they are compared to the rest of your objectives. Feeling like a battle against my own annoyance, there’s little in the game more disheartening than getting your rank dropped because you didn’t kill those two guys hanging out in the opposite corner of the stage, especially when rare materials are on the line.

As much as the ranking can bring down your spirits, it’s a nitpick next to some of the bigger issues with Attack On Titan, most of which bog down the main game too much. For starters, while delivered with the same solid voice acting, beautiful visuals, and stellar presentation as when you’re in the middle of the action, the story is hard to stay interested in since it’s a story we’ve seen told so many times. This isn’t the game’s fault, but it’s impossible to be excited about sitting through the Female Titan finale for the third time. Fortunately, the game goes above and beyond in this respect, adding in part of the next story arc after the credits roll as a set of bonus post game quests. Within the main game, some of the missions feel more drawn out than they should be. If we break down the anime and make an action game out of the actual fight scenes, there’s very little to explore, (which was a big reason why last year’s game fell short). To compensate, small moments that were either glossed over, or took up all of two minutes of screen time on the show, will be expanded into whole missions in the game. It’s easy to see where the developers stretched things out to create a more “full” gaming experience, but for every great level we get, it also ends up being tied to slow story progression.

You’ll be thankful for your crew when you’re inevitably caught.

But most importantly, as fun as the game play is, Attack On Titan falls into Omega Force’s most consistent complaint. This game is far too repetitive. Don’t get me wrong, the satisfying flash of a perfect attack, the occasional zoom in on your character before they deliver the killing blow, and the spray of blood that douses your character in a brutal crimson rain never gets old, but most of the combat revolves around you doing the same thing repeatedly for the 10 hours or so that the main story takes to complete. Add in a few more for the post game content, and another 10-20 minimum for the Expedition Mode, and the shine will definitely wear off over time. The game does try to throw in new elements with horseback levels, where your faithful steed will accompany you while traveling across areas with few buildings to latch on to, Titan Mode levels, where Eren fights hand to hand with some satisfying, yet few attacks as mentioned earlier, and bosses that require you to wear down their body before their weakness at the nape of their neck will be exposed, but it’s not enough when these brief moments are quickly replaced by the standard combat. It doesn’t help when occasionally, especially in small, enclosed maps, the camera loses all sense of direction and flies around faster than a Maneuver Gear ever could. Combined with the (appreciated) grapple physics that will drop you if your hooks become obstructed, and some minor slowdown when battles get hectic, and you end up with a great game with some minor technical hiccups.

Despite the repetition, Attack On Titan is one of the most enjoyable anime adaptations I’ve played. By capturing the style and brutality of its anime counterpart and successfully adapting it into an adrenaline rush of a video game with its satisfying, fast paced action, it won’t be hard to find plenty to love. Fans of the series itself, or even an action gamer who’s never heard of the series, (if any exist at this point), would do well to pick it up and take up arms against the Titans. With online play to keep the battles going long after the credits roll, a distinct cast of characters, and plenty of content to unlock throughout, Wall Maria’s tragedy is definitely our gain.

Throughout the 2D fighting game resurgence over the last few years, one of the kings of the genre has been largely absent. As franchises both new and old continued to thrive, The King Of Fighters seemingly vanished, with the once yearly fighting game franchise failing to see a new release since the thirteenth game released in 2010. Using the last six years to regroup, refocus and rebuild, SNK Playmore’s flagship fighter has finally returned with The King Of Fighters XIV. Re-debuting with both a visual and mechanical overhaul, the series aims to make its current gen debut on PS4 the most accessible to date, all while keeping its solid team based fighting at the forefront. Succeeding in some aspects and failing in others, XIV may not be a return to form, but that doesn’t mean its not an enjoyable title in its own right.

Many years after the fall of Ash Crimson and the apparent demise of Orochi, The King of Fighters tournament has failed to re-surface. Suddenly, a mysterious benefactor by the name of Antonov revives the tournament while claiming that he is the one true fighting champion. To see if anyone can prove him wrong, the powerful warrior hopes to back up his claims by inviting teams from around the world to compete in his tournament for a chance to face him, featuring competitors like the legendary Team Japan, (Kyo, Benimaru and Goro Daimon), the heroes of South Town, (Terry Bogard, Andy Bogard and Joe Higashi), and a mysterious new trio Antonov invited personally. As usual, not all is as it seems, with a more sinister plot taking place underneath the surface.

The Rivalry Continues

Taking an opposite approach compared to its most immediate competition, KOF XIV sticks to a more traditional set of modes when it comes to its feature set. Featuring a giant 50 character roster, (48 to start with and two to unlock), 17 are brand new. Among the 33 characters returning, some of which haven’t been playable in over a decade, and even old favorites have received some big changes, for better and for worse. The core fighting revolves around choosing a team of three fighters, each of which take turns against the opposing group. Becoming somewhat of a survival fight, your first fighter will stay in the match until they’re knocked out, moving on to your second and third character, with the loser obviously being the team who loses all three members first. Using a four button control scheme made up of light and strong punches and kicks, using them to activate the right combos, special moves and super moves at the right times will be the difference between winning and losing.

Considering that this is the fourteenth game in the series, chances are you’ve already played one of these games, which also means you’re well aware of the basic mechanics that make up these games. Moving on to what’s changed since last time, SNK Playmore has delivered on their promise to make the game more accessible to newcomers with new abilities and easy combos. Tapping the light punch button in succession will trigger an auto combo that ends in a devastating super move, (assuming you have enough special meter to pull it off.) Hitting the strong punch and kick buttons at the same time activates a Blow Back attack, instantly creating distance by knocking the opponent to the other side of the screen while setting them up for long range damage. Past KOF games let you pay one meter for a temporary power boost, which gets taken a step further this time around. Once in Max Mode, you’ll have a set amount of time to activate your EX special moves as much as you want. Other fighters usually make you pay per use of an EX attack, but having unlimited usage of the stronger versions of your special attacks can help you turn the tide of battle real quick. Couple these with your Max Super SP moves, and it won’t be long after comboing in these souped up versions of your super moves take down your enemies. Then again, when you want your victories to have that extra flair, new Climax Super SP Moves can wipe out half of the enemy’s health in one attack at the cost of three meters, complete with a special cutscene to accompany the chaos.

Old favorites return alongside some new faces

Once you’ve gotten the hang of the core mechanics, KOF has plenty of ways to put what you’ve learned to the test. Namely, its Story Mode functions much like the Arcade Mode of past games, with an added cinematic presentation at certain points. Aside from the mandatory cutscenes that play no matter who you’re using, having certain characters fight each other will activate some back and forth dialogue that can both explore character motivations and relationships. If playing with one of the game’s established teams, finishing the game will reward you with a lengthy ending, complete with some well drawn still frames depicting the aftermath of the tournament for your team.

Supplementary single player modes include your typical Survival Mode, Time Attack, Training, and Vs. Mode against both other players or the CPU. Who would have thought!? Sadly, Trial Mode, the combo tutorial feature that has become a fighting game staple over the last few years, went from my most anticipated mode to my least favorite. Unlike other games that delve into some of the more complex mechanics for each character, each set is nearly identical in KOF regardless of who you’re playing as. Serving as a way to test your basic understanding of cancels and super moves, it does little to help you bring out the full potential of your fighter.

Yet, in a reversal of fortunes, Online Mode, which was the weak point of the previous game due to horrible netcode, is much improved this time around. Aside from most of my matches being lag free during both Player Match fights and Ranked Match fights, there’s just so much to do with friends and strangers alike this time around. First off, SNK had the sense to only make you use your preset team in Ranked Match, which prevents counter picking while letting you switch things up in Player Match lobbies. Speaking of, KOF XIV handles lobbies better than any fighter I’ve played before. Rather than make say… A queue of 10 wait for the top 2 people to finish before taking turns, anyone in the lobby will automatically be paired up to fight with someone who’s not in a fight, making it so that the only way someone won’t be playing is if there’s an odd number of players participating. Even then, the person not fighting can choose to spectate any of the fights they want. So if they see a character fighting that they’re not familiar with, they can spy on the fight and pick up some tips! Either that, or they could go into the online practice mode, where you can head into training mode with another real life person and brush up on your combos. For the extra sociable brawlers out there, Party Mode delivers a true to life KOF experience, pitting three individuals against three others for a six player fight for supremacy. Just remember, that super meter isn’t just YOURS anymore, adding an extra caveat to keep in mind when you don’t want to piss off your friends.

We can’t talk about the game without addressing its most obvious shortcoming, which is its bland graphics. Looking not too far off from what you’d expect from the Maximum Impact series from over a decade ago, its wasn’t long before I was longing for those gorgeous 2D sprites from the last two games. Everything from the character models to the effects look far from what you’d expect from a PS4 exclusive, and it doesn’t gain any points from its pre-rendered CG’s, which don’t look too much better.

Then again, fighting isn’t about how one looks, but how one plays To its credit, XIV has its fundamental play down. For veterans however, you’ll likely come across a series of small changes that aren’t game breaking by any means, but will definitely feel like a step backwards. Namely, the game feels far too easy to complete, taking a series that has been known for its punishing bosses, and delivering a final fight that won’t feel like much more of a struggle than your typical brawl. Combos don’t seem to scale back damage as much, leading to some basic chains wiping out nearly an entire health bar for some low risk high reward game play. The most puzzling aspect however, is how some classic characters have had some odd changes to their tool set, making them less effective while keeping their core abilities intact. Unlike say, how Vega is a completely different character in Street Fighter V, Athena is largely the same, but is made to be even more vulnerable after certain attacks, having her Phoenix Arrow’s ending kick be interruptible, and losing her wall jump. Taking away abilities that some characters have had for two decades feels unnecessary, but doesn’t detract from the overall excitement of the game play after making the proper adjustments.

The King of Fighters XIV has a lot going for it. Its huge roster, proper single player modes with rewards in the form of endings and artwork spanning 22 years, easy to pick up and play mechanics and its hidden depth are all still here, along with one of the best sets of online features in the genre and some features to make the game more accessible for new players. Still, I can’t help but feel like something is missing compared to past games that make this entry stand above all the others. Maybe its the easy difficulty when it comes to beating the Story Mode. It could be the dated graphics, or the lack of effort it takes to pull off huge damage compared to other games. Then again, having characters changed for the worse doesn’t help either. If anything, this game is a perfect case of “death by 1000 needles”. There’s no one problem with it that overshadows what it does well, but so many small issues take what is otherwise a great game, and turns it to one that’s simply better than good. Fighting game fans will find plenty to love, but with that in mind, there’s also plenty of room to get better. Let’s just hope we won’t have to wait another six years to see the improvements.

Warner Bros. and Lego really brought the hype to Lego Dimensions when they revealed Year 2 at the 2016 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), showing off several new franchises that will be brought to the game, including Sonic the Hedgehog, the (all female) Ghostbusters, Adventure Time and several others!

Among this new wave, Supergirl will also be entering the Lego Dimensions universe. But here’s the catch. Supergirl will be a limited edition figure added into the starter pack, meaning if you already own the game, you’ll have to purchase another starter pack just to obtain the Supergirl figure.

So far, Warner Bros. has not announced any future availability outside of the starter pack. While she will not be completely inaccessible within the game as you will be able to hire her temporarily as a hire-a-hero character, for players like me who have bought the starter pack already, this is a little frustrating to say the least.

We can always hope that Warner Bros. will make Supergirl available, even for a limited amount of time, singularly or within a team pack. But for now, the best we can do is sit tight and wait for any further updates on Year 2.

Lego Dimensions will be releasing their second season starting September 27th.

So what’s all this talk about No Man’s Sky?

Developed by Hello Games, No Man’s Sky was released on August 9th for the Playstation 4 (with a delayed release to Windows PC’s via Steam.) No Man’s Sky is an exploration survival game, set in a (basically) infinite procedurally generated galaxy, each planet with their own unique habitat set with fauna, flora, minerals, and other resources. Your goal is to reach to the center of the universe, by request of a mysterious force called Atlas, though if you don’t want to sit through playing the story, you are more than welcome to pave your own path and explore the universe as you please.

When I first heard about this game during their announcement in the 2014 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), I was awed and excited. A space exploration game where you could endlessly traverse through countless planets? Where you can play with millions of people and still make discoveries no one else has made, discover planets that are yet undiscovered by the other players? Yes, sign me up!

As the release date came closer, more announcements were made. Naming planets, along with their respective flora and fauna. Space battles. Other sentient life forms, and learning their languages. Oh man, this game was going to be insane!

Finally, the release came. I bought it immediately. I popped out the disk and started the game up on my Playstation.

The first thing I saw was a vast terrain of unusual plants, minerals and creatures. As my camera turned, I saw my space ship, damaged and broken.

After roaming around the planet searching for materials, I finally rebuilt my ship to working condition. I had to tread wearily, as planets can have hostile life forms. Sentinels act as security guards on each planet, keeping a watchful eye on me as I mined for ore. Sometimes they would attack me if they deemed me hostile. I can attack them for titanium but sometimes it was best to run away before reinforcements were called in.

Eventually, I was led on a journey to rebuild my ship well enough to warp to farther planets, and along the way, I found alien monoliths. I learned words for certain alien races, and even interacted with a few aliens, though I had a hard time understanding what they said, I only knew so many words of their language. And while I don’t know what Atlas is (yet), I’m sent on a mission by Atlas to travel to the center of the universe, with the aid of aliens, technology, and black holes.

As you continue exploring the game, you’ll find upgrades for your exosuit, gun (called a Multitool), and ship. You will even come across distress signals where you may find another ship you can rebuild. You can even buy ships from traders and sellers.

So how do I like this game? It was everything I expected (and almost everything that Hello Games said it was going to be). Smooth controls, simple interface, insanely gorgeous graphics, and a wonderfully vast map of planets to explore. This game ended up to be much more realistic than I expected. Without a pulse engine and booster, some spots on the map might take you days (in real real-time) to walk or fly to. You have to constantly mine for energy materials to charge your life support system and blasters and fuel your ship. You could get attacked by hostile creatures that want to eat you or even befriend a friendly creature that will help you find rare resources on the planet you are on. Make friends with sentient species, or defend a ship sending out a distress signal within a battle in space. All these little things make this game so much more interactive, it truly draws you in.

I have yet to encounter any other players yet, though it has been confirmed that two players have managed to meet, a mind-boggling feat.

No Man’s Sky scores a cool 4.5/5. It’s a masterpiece, a game with a strong (yet subtle) story, yet versatile enough to where players can choose their own path and carve out their own story. With gorgeous scenery and immersive gameplay, this is easily one of the best games I’ve played to date (and I cannot wait to keep playing).

In the latest trailer for Pokemon Sun/Moon, Nintendo and The Pokemon Company dumped so much information on us, we had to turn off tracking to keep our brains from overloading. Including new forms for old Pokemon, new evolutions and characters making their debut, and some serious format changes are making the next generation of Pokemon look like the most varied yet.

Let’s start with the most interesting reveal. Many of our old favorites are getting huge makeovers thanks to their new Alola forms. Shown in the trailer were Eggsecutor, who goes from being a coconut tree to a giant, long necked coconut tree. If a pile of eggs becoming a tree wasn’t strange enough, its new form changes its typing to a Grass/Dragon type. How that thing is a dragon, I have no idea. Then again, I stopped looking for logic in the series years ago.

Speaking of not making sense,  fan favorite Pokemon, Vulpix, has gone from a Fire Type to an Ice Type, with a beautiful redesign to match. Its evolved form, Ninetails, becomes an Ice/Fairy type, making a Pokemon who got new life in X/Y even more interesting going forward. Lastly, Sandshrew and Sandslash are going from Ground types to Ice/Steel, which will ironically make it week to its original typing.

Old Pokemon have been getting a lot of attention between this and Pokemon Go!, but that doesn’t mean that the new Pokemon don’t have plenty of room to shine. I mean, how could you not with great creatures like Oricorio, a dancing bird that changes its style of dance and type based on which one of Alola’s islands it’s on. How this will work in competitive battles hasn’t been said, but this is something to keep an eye on, since its ability to gain stat boosts from dance attacks used by enemies will be a great counter to dragons. Other interesting inclusions such as Minior and its apparent ability to use one free Substitute, Formantis and Lurantis, who have a brand new Solar Blade Grass attack, and Gumshoos, the evolved form of Yungoos, who doesn’t help its first form’s Donald Trump resemblance. I mean, just look at it! Who doesn’t love Gumshoos? Everybody loves it, they tell me all the time.

New characters and forms aren’t the only changes coming however, since the trailer is hinting at some major changes to the game’s formula. Apparently replacing gyms are Island Challenges, where trainers will have to accept special missions from Trial Captains. Once completed, trainers will end up battling Toten Pokemon, powered up versions that can call on its friends for help. With the Totem Pokemon defeated, we’ll have to square off against one of the four island’s Kahuna, which we’re guessing is a new type of Gym Leader.

With so much danger to fend off, we’ll be given an extra advantage thanks to Z-Moves, single use special attacks that vary depending on a Pokemon’s type. These screen clearing moves have the potential to completely change how we’ll approach battles going forward, much like Mega Evolution did in 2013. Z-Moves aren’t the only tricks the Pokemon have learned this time around, since riding them seems to be a bigger feature this time around. With Tauros and Charizard featured, let’s hope we can become even more immersed by using our favorites to help us in the field. Could this be replacing HMs?

Gears of War is a franchise that is almost as synonymous with the Xbox brand as Halo. So when Gears of War 4 was scheduled to have a panel at this year’s SDCC, I had to go!

First off, the panel showed off the customized Xbox One S. The console features the deepest etching ever done on a console, which does add some incredible detail. The console itself will feature some sound effects, similar to themed consoles in the past. It was also announced that buying the console will also net you some exclusive in-game content. Die hard Gears fans will want this console, but I can also imagine some fans gauging their own interest for a console that’ll set them back over $450.

The panel would go on to bring out a surprise guest in John DiMaggio. It was recently revealed that Marcus Fenix would be making a return to the franchise as a father. By the time Gears of War 4 picks up, his son, JD Fenix is already an adult doing adult COG things. The rest of the voice acting talent includes Lauren Bailey, Liam McIntyre, and Eugene Byrd. Side note: Bonus points if you recognize the two last names from a couple of DCTV shows.

In an effort to keep the voice acting as authentic as they could, some scenes involved all four voice actors coming together in one room to act out a scene. These scenes seem to have great emotional impact on the story and sounds like it might tug at our heart strings when the game is released. In another instance, Rod Fergusson himself laid on the floor and had Lauren Bailey step on his face as she recited a line meant for a member of the Swarm.

It was at this point that the panel would announce a fifth character voice actor in Jimmy Smits. Smits will be playing Oscar Diaz in the game. We were shown a snippet of dialogue featuring Diaz, and I must say, I would have never guessed Smits was behind the voice.

We then started to get into gameplay. While Horde 3.0 wasn’t talked about a bunch, it was stated that Horde 3.0 aims to be less tower defense-y and more “scrappy.” I assume this means we’ll have a wider range of tactics at our disposal, more weapons, and a wider area in which we can place sentry turrets. As for the multiplayer, the sawed-off shotgun WILL NOT be in Gears 4.

As the panel drew to a close, we got one final reveal. JD Fenix’s name was used to interrogate Rod Fergusson, causing him to state what the “D” in “JD” stood for. At this point, John DiMaggio and the rest of the panel kept shouting, “What’s the D?!” Eventually, Fergusson broke. JD Fenix’s full name is James Dominic Fenix. His middle name is an obvious nod to Marcus’ fallen partner, Dom.

Finally, one of the more surprising announcements was that Fergusson himself alluded to some talks behind the scenes involving the creation of a Gears of War movie. Nothing was confirmed, but if Gears 4 has a big opening, we can expect to hear more about a potential movie.

That’s all they showed this year, but we can expect some more announcements as the game gets nearer to completion.

We had the pleasure of being at the Injustice 2 panel at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con! Here’s what you need to know!

The panel started with the trailer they released during this year’s E3. After that, the lead on the project, and creator of some of our most beloved games, Ed Boon stepped out on stage. Perhaps one of the most interesting things Ed Boon talked about early on in the panel was how Injustice came to be. Of course, fans of the DC lore know there’s a comic, but as for how it ended up on the consoles, Ed Boon said NetherRealm studios was looking to work on a game that was a little less gory. Still, Boon was grateful that the folks over at Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment allowed Boon and his team to create a more violent atmosphere for some of DC’s most iconic heroes and villains.

Boon went on to elaborate how the creation of this new mini-universe existing within the greater DC lore kept him and his team focused and dedicated. The chance at adding a new chapter in the DC Universe was something NetherRealm and Boon wanted to accomplish from the start. As for Injustice 2, the game’s story is taking precedence, which is highly unusual for fighting games. The first game’s lead writer is back and promised that there’s much more in store for the sequel. One of the most exciting story-related announcements from the panel was that of Supergirl’s heavy involvement. According to Boon and the panel, Supergirl’s story arc is going to be major and may be the catalyst for the sequel’s story. I’m only guessing here, but is it possible Supergirl would break Superman out of prison we saw him in at the end of Injustice?

As for the gear featured in the game, there will be lots of it and gamers will be constantly progressing. But for fans who are in the competitive scene, fear not! Injustice 2 will feature a Tournament Mode in which the gear and all its attributes will be negated, creating an even playing field.

The first Injustice game had 30 characters total, and Ed Boon himself confirmed that Injustice 2 aims to break that number, making it the biggest DC roster yet for a fighting game. Not only that, but the panel let on that there will probably be at least one major Mortal Kombat character to be included later on via DLC. Boon also commented on the number of tweets he gets, asking for specific characters to be included in the game. We should be getting character reveals at every convention from here until release date. As for this year’s convention, we got a trailer introducing Wonder Woman and Blue Beetle.

It’s important to note that all player models were created with the use of facial motion capture, ensuring top quality when the game releases. As for Blue Beetle, I also want to get it out there that hero will in fact be a teenager. That’s it for now folks! Injustice 2 will be releasing next year.

Call of Duty is one of the longest running FPS franchises around. With other FPS, namely Battlefield, going backwards, Call of Duty is steady on going to the future. Infinite War takes gamers to space as they combat a lethal army hellbent on destroying Earth and everything associated with it. No, there’s not going to be any aliens here, but that won’t stop Infinity Ward from introducing sci-fi looking weapons.

Not much was revealed during the panel, however, Infinity Ward did drop a few tidbits on the game’s story. For instance, the focus of this particular Call of Duty is to drive the game’s story to a place that exceeds past iterations of the franchise. Early on, the team decided to approach this next chapter with an increased cinematic experience. To do this, the main cast was brought in to work and act out each cutscene and in-game cinematic using motion capture suits. It took TWO years to do this, with absolutely no recording booths involved. To prep the actors, military personnel were brought in to teach the actors how to handle themselves during firefight situations, how to carry rifles, how to shoot weapons, and follow protocol during certain situations.

Call of Duty Infinite Warfare

During a demo shown to us during the panel, most of the player models looked nearly complete. One thing I did notice was that all of the female characters were unusually smooth, but I’ll hold any and all reservations until the game is actually released. With a cast like Kit Harrington, who plays the main villain, Brian Bloom, David Harewood, and Jamie Gray Hyder, we’re bound to play through one of the most narrative driven Call of Duty‘s to date.

The last announcement that came during the panel was the inclusion of a Zombies mode in Infinite Warfare. This is a first for an Infinity Ward Call of Duty title. This was a huge announcement as the Zombie Call of Duty community continues to grow. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare released November 12, 2016.

If you’re interested, you can download Dex now on the Xbox One, and on the PS4 if you’re in Europe. Dex will arrive on the PS4 marketplace in North America on July 12th and is priced at $19.99. A physical copy of Dex is planned to release in the territories and we can expect a Wii U and Playstation Vita version later this year. Until then, have fun!

Megadimension Neptunia VII is easily the best Neptunia game yet. With noticeably higher production values, this game shines at what its good at. The music, the gameplay, and the visuals all excel. The frame rate is impeccable, staying at a steady 60 FPS . There is some fanservice as like the previous titles, but it’s very mild, and after the first few hours it should not be seen as anything more than an afterthought or for comedic relief. This makes even more sense  once you consider the entire leading cast is made up of strong females and the entire society within the game is pretty much matriarchal.

To start with, Neptunia is part of a very niche genre and series about the console industry and the war between the various companions that dominate it. There are an infinite number of dimensions, each with its own unique history, but they all revolve around different versions of the console war between Sega, Nintendo, PlayStation and Xbox. In the game they’re given the names Planeptune, Lowee, Lastation and Leanbox respectively, being named after their most successful, current flagship console systems.

MDN VII is the sequel to Hyperdimension Neptunia (HDN) Victory, which itself is the sequel to HDN Mk2. A word of warning, going into this game first will cause some of the greatness of it to be lost on you. As it is a sequel to two previous games, references will be missed. Also, having a solid understanding of Japanese culture and anime in general, especially their expressions, will go a long way to enjoy this game more.

As we move on, VII can be easily describes as  the pinnacle of the Neptunia series so far. As time goes on, these games have only gotten better and better, and this one clearly stands as a standard when it comes to the improvements made between games. The graphics are great (played it completely maxed out, though the game wasn’t too demanding), areas that are dark look grungy and areas that should pop with color do and rightly so. The game is pretty massive, with three different intertwining stories in one  package and a huge cast of characters to choose from. In addition to the returning party members, each new character is also based on a different real world game console or game series, each of which is introduced throughout the multiple story lines. Further highlighting the changes made to how the story progresses the game does not the typical RPG flow of following the events and move on to next chapter. For example, in the G arc, we can choose between the four goddesses and develop their story, which is the only way to use certain characters, (like Noire’s campaign being the only one in the G arc with her sister, Uni, for example).

The gameplay is where the game really shines. Now that you are able to destroy and break of parts of enemies, the turn based combat requires you to think strategically and to plan your attacks. Some of the characters can transform during battle to give you an added boost of power and new moves you can use to to dispatch foes. In more detail, the cards at the upper right corner of the screen basically stated the order in which the enemies/heroes will attack in, while combat itself has some added elements to it. First off, during your turn, each character had a range in which they can move. This allowed you to position yourself around an enemy, attacking their flanks or their rear. Doing so increased the accuracy and damage dealt by your attacks, which is essential in some battles, especially early on when the difficult was significant. As for your attacks, you have your three basic combos. Rush Attacks, multi hit moves that are good at building the EXE gauge, (which I’ll get to later), Power Attacks, which grant increased power at the cost of the number of hits, and Standard Attacks, a mix of Rush and Power. You can have up to 5 attacks in a row, but this is determined by your weapon. There is a great deal of strategy around this piece. Each character has a different set of combos, and each combo may or may not come with a combo trait which, if satisfied, guarantees it’ll hit and be a critical strike. Figuring out which weapon to use for which character and which skills to set in which order in the combo adds a massive amount of complexity and depth to basic attacks, (not to mention this could mean the difference between life and death).

The improved gameplay is the star of the show.

In addition to combo attacks there are also skills. These can be buffs, heals, resurrections, debuffs, or straight damage abilities. Some have AoE, some are linear, and some are single target. Some are elemental and some physical, which might be better to use depending on the situation. There is a wide range of abilities that you will find yourself using even late into the game because they fill many different roles, and no role ever really becomes useless. Then there are special ultimate attacks, called EXE Attacks. There is an EXE Gauge that fills with each hit you take and each hit you do. The more hits, the faster it fills. Rush attacks fill this the quickest since they have the most hits. A lot more can be said about the combat, scouting and (the weakest) crafting, but for the sake of length, I won’t. The combat system in the series has come a very long way since the early days, so newcomers to the series or those who only played the first few will know that the combat system has been greatly improved. This is the title to play if you want to get into the Neptunia series if you’ve never done so before.

Another place where the game shines excellently at is the music. There are a great number of catchy tunes and all the sound and effects fit nicely with the theme of the game. The songs are designed specifically to match a particular mood or environment. It does well at matching whatever context in which they’re in.

The story isn’t going to win any Nebula awards for greatest plot twist. Once again, the game starts out with Neptune getting sucked into yet another dimension, (basically what happened in Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory), and this time, along comes her little sister, Nepgear. They land in what appears to be an apocalyptic version of their world and they need to figure out where they are and how to get back home. Neptune being the lovable Neptune, they set out on their quest bringing with them everything we have come to know and love. With a rather simple premise, and a tad bit of originality, the story is never difficult to understand. That being said, the story seems to is merely there to create a story for the characters to play in, and boy they do play.

First we have Neptune, a quirky, loveable little bundle of energy and joy that can make or break the tension in even the gloomiest of scenes. Arguably, her single greatest calling card is treating the fourth wall like a revolving door .Her younger sister, Nepgear, is one of the stable, rational minded individuals in the story that tries to keep things on track. Unfortunately this often fails and she ends up getting sucked into whatever problems her sister causes for her. However, beneath her seemingly docile, level headed exterior is a full-on gear head that goes bonkers at the sight of machines and robots. Series newcomer, Uzume, joins the girls in this dilapidated environment, and is based off of the Sega Dreamcast. Uzume has a megaphone, as a reference to the Dreamcast not being known as the quietest of systems. Changes in her personality appear as well, in reference to the transition of the games that were released on the Dreamcast from cute and bubbly to sharp and cool, (though that can be subjective). Her transformed state even shares a certain resemblance with that familiar green circle on her chest, referencing the middle of a Dreamcast’s controller. It doesn’t seem like much, but the way those three characters play off each other, and play off the dozens of others that you will encounter, and can add to your party, shows where the true heart of this series lies. Every character has depth to them, even if you don’t see it right away. The story of this game is amazing, not because of the quality, but because it is what every game should be.It doesn’t take itself seriously, and  it’s fun.

This RPG is a great start for the summer if you missed the PS4 release. With it’s abundant helping of content, it will keep you occupied for some time to come and if you’re willing to put in the time, you’ll find yourself having a lot of fun.

Briefly: If you’re a regular around Geekscape or the Geekscape Games podcast, you’ll know just how big a fan I was of last year’s independent mystery title, Her Story.

As our Favourite Games of 2015, and countless other Best of 2015 lists exclaimed, Her Story was one of the very best gaming experiences of 2015, which I’m pretty sure that nobody expected out of an independent, Full Motion Video title.

We were sucked into the mystery, the murder, the case, and well, Her Story, and though the title was quickly released on OS X and iOS (along with its Windows counterpart), it never made it over to Google’s mobile platform.

Until now, that is.

Her Story just hit Google Play, it’s $2.99, and it’s one of the most memorable titles of the past few years.

While the show was going on this week, some of us couldn’t make the trip into the heart of downtown LA, and some of us couldn’t find the time to try out the sequel to a beloved Halo title, Halo Wars 2. Whether you haven’t had the time, or are simply out of hard drive space (we’ve all been there), I’m sure you’re still at least a little curious to how a RTS title holds up on a console.

First, coming from a die-hard Halo Wars fan, I was excited to see what the folks at 343i had in store for the franchise. Halo Wars was introduced to the masses at a time where the future of Halo was uncertain. At the time, in 2009, we had heard rumblings that Bungie would be signing off after what ultimately became Halo: Reach. To make matters worse, Ensemble Studios, the developers behind Halo Wars and a couple of future Halo-related projects was shut down shortly after being acquired by Microsoft. Sure we got a couple of DLC packs post launch, but Halo Wars went relatively untouched for the remainder of its life. Today, it’s a backwards compatible title with online capability, and it’s still something I enjoy playing with friends. So, along with Ensemble’s demise, and the demise of a green-lit Halo MMO title, the future of this particular RTS was one giant question mark.

Last year, the Halo Wars franchise had a breath of new life. 343i made it very clear that the Halo Wars campaign story was not lost on them, and its lore was used in a variety of other mediums Halo has since conquered. Most recently, the logo for the Spirt of Fire, which was the main UNSC ship in Halo Wars‘ story, showed up in Halo 5 as a weapon skin. Characters related to the lore created by Halo Wars was also briefly mentioned in Halo‘s comic book series. By now, it would seem that 343i and Microsoft are full steam ahead on expanding Halo Wars.

All of this got me excited to try the game out, something you can do yourself by downloading the open beta today. Fans of the previous iteration may notice a couple of tweaks to the gameplay that feel, well, unnecessary. For instance, tech levels and base levels are now one in the same. Halo Wars 2 has done away with reactors and instead developed a sort of currency you build up to advance your tech level and research new units. This change may not be welcomed to those who prefer to just build reactors instead.

The game does look pretty. New sound effects and unit looks are a welcomed update. This still being in beta, the game’s look is all up from here. There are some units introduced to the game that were missing from the previous installment too. One of these units is the Sniper unit that is available when using Captain Cutter in the beta. Each unit clearly has an ability which can be countered by other units, depending on who chooses who when the game releases. Along with new ground units, we are also treated to new air units. Fans of Halo will most definitely recognize Banshees in the air, but there are also new air vehicles that, well, look weird. Most of the fan favorites appear to be back. Any Halo Wars veteran will tell you how great it is to attack a base with nothing but marines equipped with flamethrowers.

As for the heroes, only two were available in the beta. Captain Cutter reprises his role as the default UNSC hero, while a Brute, who I suppose was the same hero in the first Halo Wars, takes a more prominent role for the Covenant. What’s also new is that each hero has a sort of skill set assigned to them. For example, Captain Cutter is described as more of an attack hero while Atriox is described to have defensive units. Obviously, gamers will pick heroes that work best for them, but the unit differentials employ a greater sense of strategy than the first game.

While every unit wasn’t available in the beta, understandably so, Halo Wars 2 looks to redefine console RTS’ for the better. With the Halo franchise behind it, they might just do that. Unfortunately, Halo Wars 2 seems to have lost something that made the first magical. Still, with his being just a beta, I am completely open to changing my opinion when the game comes out.For now, I’ll stick to playing the first Halo Wars, which is now backwards compatible on the Xbox One.

Halo Wars 2 is set to release February 21, 2017. 

Another Legend of Zelda is a welcomed addition to a storied franchise. We all have our stories of how the Legend of Zelda franchise has touched our hearts, shaped our lives, and stood as a crutch when we needed one. So when Nintendo announces another iteration of the game, we all listen.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of Wild

The trailer showed off beautiful landscapes and new activities players can engage in. Honestly, it was a blend of Nintendo flexing their console power, and their unique, artistic vision of one of their main exclusives.

The game breaks with some conventions from the series. For example, many of the minor enemies are no longer scattered randomly around the world, as many now live together in colonies. Link can climb towers and massive structures to get a bearing on his surroundings. He can even reach the top of mountains – any mountain he can see, he can climb. He can paraglide to lower areas or even use his shield to slide down a mountain. Link will travel across fields, through forests and to mountain peaks.

 

The game’s wild world surrounds Link, and he must pay attention to changes in climate, as a shift in weather or temperature can affect the environment and his ability to survive in it. A sudden downpour might douse a roaring campfire or a lightning storm might be attracted to Link’s metallic weapons. Players might need to bundle up with warmer clothes or change into something better suited to the desert heat.

 

More than 100 Shrines of Trials dot the landscape, waiting for players to discover and explore them in any order they want. As players work their way through the traps and puzzles inside, they’ll earn special items and other rewards that will help them on their adventure. Puzzles in the game often have multiple answers, and secrets can be found everywhere. Exploration and discovery are a huge part of the fun.

 

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is scheduled to launch simultaneously for both the Wii U console and Nintendo’s next system, code-named NX, in 2017. The game also includes compatibility with amiibo, which are sold separately. Nintendo announced a new series of amiibo figures specific to the game that includes Link with a bow (“Archer”), Link on horseback (“Rider”), and a “Guardian” that is the first amiibo with flexible parts. The existing Wolf Link amiibo works with the game as well: When players tap a Wolf Link amiibo to the Wii U GamePad controller, Wolf Link will attack enemies on his own and help players to hunt. He has three hearts, unless players carry over save data from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD. Wolf Link disappears when his hearts run out. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is set to release next year for the Wii U and NX.

If you’ve been itching to show off some dance moves to your friends, you can toss out that old DDR mat and get ready for Just Dance 2017.

The franchise seems to have dropped the standardized numerical sequel titles and has opted to go with [Insert Sports Game here] 2017. However, that’s not all the franchise dropped. Just Dance 2017 will not just hold a single track list that will belong to this title alone. Along with the game’s announcement, their service, aptly named Just Dance Unlimited, promises to expand and give gamers access to over 200 songs.

The first tracks revealed at E3 include:

The Just Dance Controller App makes the game more accessible for current-gen owners and PC with its phone scoring technology that allows players to dance without additional accessories like cameras. With Just Dance 2017 the app will become a hub for players’ activities and a way to access exclusive content from Just Dance TV as well as a way for players to apply fun filters to their best Just Dance photos and share them with their friends.

 

Along with the standard version of the game, a Gold Edition, which includes all of the Just Dance 2017 tracks along with three months access to Just Dance Unlimited, is now available for pre-order.

 

Just Dance 2017 will be available on all motion-control gaming platforms, including Nintendo’s Wii™, Wii U™ and NX systems, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, and PlayStation® 4 computer entertainment system. Continuing on with our E3 stories, what may have been lost in the crowd is Steep. It’s a game that belongs to a seemingly unique genre. I mean, have you heard of an Open World Action Sports Game before this?

Steep is one of those titles that will appeal to people who go into GTA with friends and spend the night racing golf carts, airplanes, and everything in between. I imagine this game to be wildly fun with friends. I especially got this feeling when watching Ubisoft’s walkthrough of the game.

Today, at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), Ubisoft® announced the development of Steep, an action sports game set in the open world of the Alps. Steep is scheduled to be released December 2016 on Xbox One, PlayStation®4 computer entertainment system and Windows PC.

 

With development led by Ubisoft Annecy,* Steep drops players onto the peaks of mountains, with exhilarating experiences that include skiing, wingsuiting, snowboarding, and paragliding. These sports establish an incredible level of freedom to explore the game’s open world, allowing players to choose the way they travel and play. Steep’s vast playground offers a wide range of activities that give players the opportunity to discover, compete, pull off crazy stunts, and more. Players can meet with friends from all over the world to create unique and memorable moments.

 

In Steep, players can use the innovative trail feature to relive their most inspiring rides and trailblazing achievements, and share them on social networks with friends. Along with sharing ride replays, players can also use this feature to challenge friends to outrace them on a shared path, create epic stunts or set out to discover the massive mountain playground.

 

“Along with Ubisoft Montpellier and Ubisoft Kiev, we used our significant online and multiplayer expertise to create a game that captures the excitement and adrenaline we feel when we explore the snowy mountains surrounding us,” said Rebecka Coutaz, studio manager at Ubisoft Annecy.

In addition to exploring the Alps, Steep riders will be able to travel across the world and traverse the majestic slopes of Alaska, available as a free update after launch.

Steep is set to release this Winter!

 

Briefly: Whaaaaaat.

Sony’s E3 presentation was full of surprises, and one of the biggest (and most exciting) moments of the night was the reveal of Batman: Arkham VR.

The marketing for Rocksteady’s Arkham series has been telling you that you can ‘Be The Bat’ for what feels like forever now, and now Arkham VR is about as close as any of us will ever get (lucky for you, you even get to keep your parents).

We don’t know much about the title at this point (aside from the fact that it’s coming to Playstation VR this October), but Rocksteady notes that you’ll “Experience Gotham City through the eyes of the World’s Greatest Detective in an all new Arkham mystery.

Think like Batman. Utilise his legendary gadgets in Virtual Reality to unravel a plot that threatens the lives of Batman’s closest allies.”

Yeah, we’re in.

Out of 720 Pokemon, Japan has selected generation six water starter, Greninja, as the most popular across the entire franchise.

Barring the yet to be (officially) released Volcanion and the Pokemon shown to debut in Sun and Moon, Japanese participants were asked to vote for any one of the current 720 Pokemon as their favorite between April 16 and May 8, with the winner to be distributed to copies of Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire as a bonus for pre-purchasing tickets to Pokémon the Movie XY & Z: Volcanion and the Exquisite Magearna. While it was surprising to see a non-generation one Pokemon win the poll, the wider results show a bigger picture.

First, Greninja has had a pretty big push since it debuted in and Y. Not only was it arguably the best looking form out of all the other generation six starters, but it was easily the most viable in battle thanks to its hidden Protean ability. By changing its type to match whatever attack its using, it helped the water / dark type play both offensively and defensively, letting it adapt to various situations to make up for its lackluster defensive stats. On the anime front, Froakie became Ash’s main Pokemon during the most recent season of the long running anime, eventually evolving into Greninja and taking on some of its trainer’s characteristics in the process, (which is a heavily rumored mechanic for the upcoming Sun and Moon.) Lastly, Greninja was the sole playable and representative to be featured in the most recent Super Smash Bros. title, with a variety of fast attacks that lay waste to its opponents in unique ways.

Rounding out the rest of the top 12 is Arceus, the creator of the Pokemon universe who debuted in Diamond and Pearl, Mew, the first Mythical Pokemon, Pikachu, the series mascot, Sylveon, the sole fairy type in the top 12 who is also the most recent Eevee evolution, the man made Mythical Pokemon, Genesect, from Black and White, the sky dragon, Rayquaza, and Y‘s Zygarde, (who still got no game,) Charizard, best known as the $100 trading card that got stolen out of your card folder, the musical Meloetta from the fifth generation, the ultra powerful gen 1 secret boss, Mewtwo, and Eevee itself, the Pokemon that can become eight other types. What’s especially telling to me, is that despite gen 1 being held in such high regard, the list is full of a surprising amount of gen 5 and 6 Pokemon. Notorious for the former’s trash bag and ice cream monsters, while the latter had a living set of keys, it’s good to see that the voters acknowledged how awesome the rest of the roster could be. Now, where’s Latios, Latias and Volcarona!?

What wasn’t a surprise however, is Simisear was dead last. Sorry, fire poop monkey. There’s always next election. Stunfisk is still worse though…
