It looks like this week we are getting a whole bunch of news announcing video games being adapted into movies. If you don’t know much about ‘God Of War’ the game followed the battles of the Spartan warrior Kratos, who squares off against mythological beasts including Medusa, Cyclops and the Hydra in his quest to find Pandora’s Box and destroy Ares, the god of war.

With the financial success of movies such as ‘Wrath Of The Titans’ and ‘Immortals’ it was only a matter of time until a studio put this one into motion. David Self, who is exec producing, wrote the initial draft and now Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan have been hired to re-write the script for the upcoming movie. The writing team has written four of the six ‘Saw’ movies and the upcoming ‘Pacific Rim’.

Charles Roven and Alex Gartner are producing via Atlas Entertainment.

Now the big question is…who could play Kratos?

There’s a big rumor floating around the water cooler right now. Apparently an inside source has revealed that there will be “easter eggs” in ‘Man Of Steel’ that hint at a shared DC Universe. However these references will not be big so don’t get your hopes up on cameos or anything of that sort. The source stated that the character Warner Bros. wanted to hint at one character the most. But sorry Bat-fans it definitely wasn’t Bruce Wayne aka Batman. The character they spoke about was Wonder Woman.

While this has not been officially announced it would make sense with the recent news of a Justice League movie hitting our screens. There is also word that we may be seeing this film hitting the screens in 2015.

While they would idealy like to have Nolan involved it seems highly unlikely. He’s been asked in numerous interviews and seemed quite uninterested. With Nolan moving on to other projects, Warner Bros. must move on and Robinov would like to do it soon. But don’t get your hopes up here for any kind of news at Comic-Con. It doesn’t look like it will be that soon.

“My hope is that over the next month or so,” he said, “we’ll be ready to lay out the plan for the next DC movies.”

Update: I can confirm from a source that they did go back and add things into Man Of Steel. But they could not reveal what specifically.

In October we will see the start of the Marvel NOW! event in which Marvel will be launching a number of new titles. It appears in order to make room for the new titles a total of nine are set to be cancelled. This October, the following titles will be coming to an end.

-Captain America #19
-Fantastic Four #611
-FF #23
-Incredible Hulk #15
-Invincible Iron Man #527
-New Mutants #50
-The Mighty Thor #22
-Uncanny X-Men #20
-X-Men Legacy #275

This could mean we may see these books being relaunched with new titles and creative teams (there’s a rumor that John Romita Jr is taking over on Cap) at issue number one between October and February. I know for a fact there will be Iron Man, Thor and Captain America titles (either re-launced or re-named) but the rest are up in the air as far as I know. Full details will be revealed at Marvel’s Comic-Con panel this week.

Are you ready to re-visit a re-mastered Temple Of Doom? Well on September 18th you’re going to be able to. The trailer has Comic-Con slapped on the title so I’m pretty sure we will be seeing this one playing at booth #2913 which will feature a live snake pit. Will I be going there? No. No way at all.

Amazon currently has this listed at $74.96

It appears another comic property is getting the big screen treatment. This time around it is Top Cow’s ‘The Darkness’. With two successful games already it appears that the Marc Silvestri, David Wohl and Garth Ennis property is in development by Regency.

Regency is nearing a deal to obtain the feature film rights with producers David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman.

Len Wiseman who has directed and produced the first two ‘Underworld’ movies and produced the rest (and director of the upcoming ‘Total Recall’) is also attached to produce.

A synopsis of ‘The Darkness’ from the Top Cow website:

Before time was time, the Earth was formless and void and darkness stretched over the surface of the deep. Then God said “Let there be light.” And there was light, and God saw that it was good. So, being the guy that he is, he decided to meddle some more and separate the light from the darkness. And the darkness? The Darkness resented it. In that moment, a bitterness and spite was born that would fester and grow for centuries, distilling itself to raw, seething perfection. Ages would pass before The Darkness found a vessel worthy to inherit its boundless hatred. The vessel was mankind, God’s most favored of all his creations.

The Darkness found fertile ground for its chaotic lust in the bloodline of a family thought barely human by its fellow man: the Estacados. Each new generation inherited the gifts of The Darkness, spreading misery and unyielding chaos across the kingdoms of man. When each bearer conceived an offspring the curse of The Darkness would betray its host, leaving him to die as it bound itself to the newly innocent life, like wolves to a slaughter of defenseless lambs.

the-darkness-comic-movieEach new vessel was steered to its inevitable ruin by The Darkness. Murderers and thieves. Rapists and warlords. The Darkness thrived upon the death and devastation spread by its host and its unsuitable appetite only grew with each new generation.

In our generation, The Darkness took root in Jackie Estacado, an orphan, as all the bearers before him, raised by pimps and thieves–The Franchetti Crime Family. Like those who walked in the shadow of The Darkness before him, Jackie’s powers manifested on his 21st birthday. In that moment he was both blessed and cursed. The elemental force of chaos granted Jackie a limitless power, access to an otherworldly dimension and control over the demons that dwell there. He could do anything now and just as the men who did so before him, he was sure to pay the direst of costs.

His newfound powers served Jackie well as a mob enforcer, dealing death with effortless finesse, as The Darkness grew thick and fat. Despite Jackie’s best efforts however, tragedy and death dogged him at every turn until the very things that he loved and valued were ripped away from his grasp. He had become an enemy of all that he ever loved. An enemy of the very heavens. An enemy of his family. An enemy of the only woman he had ever loved. And an enemy of himself.

While tragedy is the burden of The Darkness, Jackie has faired better than any host who had come before him. He has defied The Darkness even at his weakest moments. He has developed more control over his carnal nature than any who came before him. Jackie’s charisma, ambivalent attitude and desire to maintain control over his own life are not just those traits which set him apart from his forefathers cursed by The Darkness; they are also the very things which may one day save his soul.

Update: Well we reported this almost a month ago and now it’s official. Variety is reporting that Lionsgate officially announced today that Phillip Seymour Hoffman is indeed joining the cast of The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. Thanks for reporting that Variety but we pretty much knew that a month ago!

Earlier today Variety’s Jeff Sneider tweeted  that Phillip Seymour Hoffman has been offered a role in the highly anticipated sequel to ‘The Hunger Games’. But what role would he be playing?

According to Wikipedia:

“In the 74th Hunger Games, he is the judge that falls into the punch bowl when Katniss shoots an arrow at the apple in the suckling pig’s mouth. In Catching Fire, he is the new Head Gamemaker following the execution of Seneca Crane. He is later shown to be the leader of the rebellion movement in the Districts, and is the mastermind behind the plan to break the tributes out of the arena in Catching Fire.”

‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’ is set to hit theaters November 22, 2013.

Aronofsky has already put together a fairly impressive cast for ‘Noah’ with Russell Crowe, Saoirse Ronan, Douglas Booth, Logan Lerman, Emma Watson, and Ray Winstone already on board. Now the director has tweeted another addition to this cast.

Hopkins will play Methuselah, the world’s oldest living man who dies at the age of 969, seven days before the beginning of the Great Flood.

NOAH is a close adaptation of the Biblical story of Noah’s Ark. In a world ravaged by human sin, Noah is given a divine mission: to build an Ark to save creation from the coming flood. The screenplay was written by Aronofsky and Ari Handel and revised by Academy Award®-nominated screenwriter John Logan (Gladiator, Hugo).

Scott Franklin and Aronofsky of Protozoa Pictures, along with Mary Parent of Disruption Entertainment, will produce the film. The film will be executive produced by Ari Handel (Black Swan), Arnon Milchan of New Regency and Chris Brigham (Inception, Argo).

‘Noah’ sails into theaters March 28th, 2014

‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ has swung into theaters and is doing great so far. The film has already pulled in an impressive estimated $341.2 million in it’s six day run. Collider recently spoke with Marc Webb about the film and the sequels that are confirmed to be happening.

On him returning to direct a sequel:

“I haven’t made a decision,” he replied. “I’m just like…this has been such a long process, it’s so much fun, it’s really exciting and I’ve invested a lot. But I just want to finish this movie, take a breath and then I’ll make that call, we’ll see.”

Due to how well this film is doing in theaters I don’t think there is quite a good chance we could see Webb return to direct the sequel.

On where he drew inspiration from in the comics:

“In terms of finding things from the comics, obviously there’s some references to his parents and different versions of that, and I studied that a little bit. And then I liked some of the attitude in The Ultimates.” Further into the conversation, he stated “I like the attitude and the physical components of Spider-Man from some of the Ultimates. So it’s an amalgam of different characters that felt interesting to me.”

Also, when asked if there were any villains he would like to see in the future, he definitely didn’t give much away but it seems like he has a pretty good idea what is in store.

“Well, hmm, I don’t want to give anything away.”

Looks like DC is shaking up another creative team. Starting with the zero issue of the series Ann Nocenti (‘Green Arrow’) will take over writing duties on ‘Catwoman’.

This fall, industry veteran and acclaimed writer Ann Nocenti (GREEN ARROW) will be taking over writing duties on CATWOMAN. Beginning her run with September’s issue #0, Nocenti will bring an exciting and unique twist to Gotham City’s most notorious femme fatale.

I don’t read the series myself but from what I have read…fans are not too thrilled about this news. We also have a cover for issue #13 which is drawn by Andy Clarke. There is also a rumor around that he will be replacing Guillem March but nothing has been confirmed as far as that goes. Side note: could that be The Joker’s face in the background and a possible tie-in to Snyder’s upcoming story?

Now, while I am sure most of you have seen this movie there are plenty of people out there that I talk to that have not. Many of you by now know Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s name but do not realize that he did indeed do movies in between ’10 Things I Hate About You’ and some of his more recent well known movies. The name you may not know here is Rian Johnson. But it sounds familiar right? Well, that’s because he is also the director of ‘The Brothers Bloom’ and the upcoming ‘Looper’. You know…that awesome looking film where he once again collaborates with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and also Bruce Willis. If somehow you’ve been living in a cave you can see the trailer here. But back to the matter at hand. ‘Brick’ isn’t going to be for everyone but everyone should check it out especially if you’re planning on seeing ‘Looper’. Rian Johsnon is a great director and his first at bat is a knock out of the park. If you’re looking for something different to add to your instant queue this weekend…’Brick’ is a great choice.

When a secret crush turns up dead and the murderer is anyone’s guess, teenage loner Brendan Fry (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is forced to navigate his school’s social network through intense interactions with thespians, band geeks and druggies (including a grown-up Lukas Haas). This unconventional film noir marked a promising debut for writer-director Rian Johnson, picking up a Special Jury Prize at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival.

If you’ve been keeping up on San Diego Comic-Con news you may know that Marvel is announcing a brand new game title. This game will be developed by High Moon Studios who are best known for ‘Transformers: War For Cyberton’ and the upcoming ‘Transformers: Fall Of Cyberton’. Well, it look’s like the monkey is out of the bag on this one. Pun fully intended there. There’s already a website up all but officially confirming that this IS the game we will be getting. Some of you may be sigh’ing but I am all for it. It’s a monkey with guns. Why would you not want to play this?

www.hitmonkeygame.com even includes a link to the Marvel HeroHQ discussion forum.

The character Hit-Monkey was created by Daniel Way and Dalibor Talajić in 2010 and appeared in a three-part miniseries before seemingly being killed at the hands of Deadpool a few months later. Is it likely we will get an appearance by Mr. Wade Wilson himself? I think we all hope so.

So, I was reading an article on LA Times Hero Complex and came to a section where they brought up something really interesting.

Why would Whedon sign up for that? He might not. But it’s intriguing to note that Whedon made the big push to put Thanos in “Avengers” and that Warlock was one of the reasons: ”For me, the greatest Avengers was ‘The Avengers’ annual that Jim Starlin did followed by the Thing ‘Two-in-One‘ that contained the death of Adam Warlock,” Whedon told Slash Film. “Those were some of the most important texts and, I think, underrated milestones in Marvel history.”

With him having set the gears for the movie in motion could it be entirely out of the question for Marvel to pursue him to direct? Especially due to it wouldn’t be entirely new territory for him being that one of Whedon’s best known works is Firefly. Attaching his name and the Marvel studios logo would definitely fill seats. Could Whedon be the perfect choice for this film? We will have to wait and find out during the Marvel Studios panel at Comic-Con Saturday in Hall H.

A few days ago I posted up an article ‘Five Spidey Stories You Should Read‘ which are some of my favorite stories from Peter Parker’s history. With the release of ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ there are going to be plenty of new ‘Spider-Man’ fans looking where to start or even returning fans wondering where they should jump back in. While the stories in my post are highly recommended reading they may not be the best “jumping in” point.

With six hundred plus issues and fifty years of back stories ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ series may be a bit much for people to try and catch up on and even intimidating for the casual superhero comic-book reader. So if you’re jumping into the Spidey-verse I would highly recommend ‘Ultimate Spider-Man’.

‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ definitely borrowed many things from the ‘Ultimate’ universe so new fans that saw that movie will most likely prefer this book. Brian Michael Bendis wrote the book and was joined by Mark Bagley on the first 104 issues and I can definitely say this is my favorite work from the both of them. I really enjoyed how Bendis wrote this series and how he made the characters feel real. You honestly relate to them. Even Uncle Ben’s death to me had more of an impact in the Ultimate book because they really developed the character over an extended version of the origin story. Another reason that this is a great place to start is because this is a story with a beginning, middle, and end. ‘The Death Of Spider-Man’ IS one of the best Spider-Man stories I have ever read and truly impacting. If you read the series and enjoy it I honestly think you will stay on and continue into the current series starring Miles Morales. I can say the series is one of the best written and drawn books out there. There are people who were entirely against the book that I now have picking it up monthly and loving it.

Although Peter may be dead the story of Miles Morales is great and Bendis continues on with the top notch writing he has brought to ‘Ultimate Spider-Man’ from the start. Sara Pichellis artwork? Phenomenal. I really love this series and the ‘Spider-Men’ mini-series that just started. This series features a crossover between the 616-universe Peter Parker and Miles Morales in the Ultimate Universe and right now it’s great. Only two issues in and I can already see it making my top five Spidey stories. So, at the end of the day my advice to you is to check out ‘Ultimate Spider-Man’ as the easiest choice for a jumping in point without totally destroying your bank account.

But if you’re looking to jump right back into regular 616 Peter Parker I would recommend starting at ‘Brand New Day’. Matt Fraction and Salvador Larroca’s ‘Sensational Spider-Man Annual #1’. Fraction condenses years of history into one emotional package, creating an issue that works as an entry point to Spider-Man, but also a fitting end. Currently I am really loving what Dan Slott and Humberto Ramos are doing with the title and if you start at ‘Brand New Day’ you should be able to catch up quite easily.

‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ is in theaters now. ‘Ultimate Spider-Man’ is available at your local comic shops. It’s ‘Spider-Mans’ 50th birthday next month. Do yourself a favor and get lost in in the Spidey-verse this weekend.

DC has announced that after his departure from ‘Detective Comics’ Tony S. Daniel will take over art duties on ‘Justice League’ for a two-issue arc written by Geoff Johns starting in issue #13. This issue will also introduce the villainess Cheetah to the “New 52”.

“I’m thrilled and honored to again work with Geoff Johns on this Justice League arc,” Daniel told DC’s The Source. “It’s going to be a lot of fun and I can’t wait to work on my favorite characters. Justice League is the first book I pull because of the big stories and the great Jim Lee art inside. I’m very happy that I get a chance to focus all my energy on making my best artwork for Geoff and the fans of Justice League.”

Additionally, Johns teases the connection that Cheetah will have with both Wonder Woman and the Justice League, as well as next year’s Trinity War event. “Tony and I will be re-introducing one of DC’s iconic villains – the Cheetah – and uncovering her mysterious connection to Wonder Woman and the Justice League,” the writer says. “For me, the Cheetah is up there with Black Manta, Sinestro and Captain Cold as one of the most iconic villains in the DC Universe, and she’ll become a major villainous force in 2012 and beyond. The fallout from Justice League #12 starts here as we head towards next year’s Trinity War.”

So, I spotted this story and thought it’d be something really cool to share with you all. This is a really touching story involving Ron Perlman himself once again dressing up as Hellboy to make a young boys wish come true. Zachary is six, and is currently being treated for leukemia and Ron went above and beyond to make this wish a reality.

In the past three weeks, Spectral Motion has been honored to host two wonderful Make-A-Wish children, Caleb and Zachary. Zachary loved his visit for two very special reasons. It was Zachary’s wish to meet Hellboy and also to become Hellboy. When the Make-A-Wish Foundation contacted Spectral Motion with this request, Mike thought it would be fantastic to have Ron Perlman reprise his role for the day. Ron loved the idea and donned the makeup once more (with the assistance of Lufeng Qu and Eden Elizalde) and also ordered a Hellboy sized meal of burgers, shakes, and fries for Zachary and his family and the entire Spectral crew to enjoy. Later in the day, Zachary was transformed into Hellboy with the assistance of makeup artists Lufeng Qu and Neil Winn. Both of the Make-A-Wish days were a complete thrill for the families of the children, as well as for the crew at Spectral Motion!

For months now internet fans have been speculating that we would see Joseph Gordon-Levitt would suiting up as an incarnation of either Robin or Azrael. I personally couldn’t see Christopher Nolan going that direction and having him don the suit whatsoever and it looks like I was right. An advanced screening of Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ took place earlier today and one attendee (SuperHeroHype’s KnightOfTheFall) has revealed the following.

JGL is not robin nor does he appear in the suit. He is just an idealistic beat cop. Nothing more. His character is handled and written well.

Sorry guys. I know some people were hyped on this idea but trust me…from what I am hearing about his role you will be glad he didn’t. I can’t reveal the secret that I do know.

So, are you not quite sick of zombies yet? A fan of ‘The Walking Dead’ TV series? A first person shooter fanatic? Well then Activision may have released some news that may just please you. In 2013 they will be releasing a first-person shooter based on ‘The Walking Dead’ television series where you will take on the role of fan favorite Daryl Dixon.

Developed by Terminal Reality, The Walking Dead will revolve around Daryl Dixon and his brother Merle on a “haunting, unforgiving quest to make their way to the supposed safety of Atlanta.” Players will control Daryl as they attempt to avoid detection from zombies that hunt using sight, sound and smell and will choose between fighting them or using stealth to avoid detection. According to Activision, “No place is truly safe for Daryl as he makes his way through the Georgia countryside in this new, post-apocalyptic world.”

Supplies will be scarce and players will need to carefully manage food, ammunition and supplies as they make their way through the game. Daryl will encounter “a slew of other characters” along the way that can help or hurt him. Whether or not these characters accompany Daryl is completely up to the player and “represents just some of the major decisions that will constantly be made while fighting to survive.”
