We profess our love of all things Telltale Games and issue a warning on the new ‘Fantastic Four’ trailer! Is training Velociraptors in ‘Jurassic World’ necessarily a good thing to do? Alan tells us about his time writing the ‘Unofficial Game of Thrones Cook Book’ and ‘Doctor Who: A History’… and he knows what he’s talking about because he schools us about Doctor Who in a huge way and it’s QUITE the history lesson! Whether your an old fan or new, I’m pretty sure you’ll love this episode!

This one’s gonna tug at the heart strings of any old school Nintendo Power fans!

Over 20 years since the original printing of Manga master Shotaro Ishinomori’s ‘The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past’ manga adaptation, Viz Media is returning the graphic novel to life. I remember these pages in their original forms, as syndicated entries in Nintendo Power magazine, and completely missed the collected edition published in 1993. Now, for the first time, I can hold it in my hands!

LegendOfZelda-LinkToThePast-3D

As the press release states:

VIZ Media, LLC (VIZ Media), the largest publisher, distributor and licensor of manga, graphic novels and anime in North America, is proud to announce the return of THE LEGEND OF ZELDA: A LINK TO THE PAST for the first time in more than two decades. The celebrated full-color graphic novel adaptation of the classic Nintendo game returns in a special single-volume edition scheduled for May release under the company’s Perfect Square imprint.

THE LEGEND OF ZELDA: A LINK TO THE PAST is a unique adaptation of the internationally bestselling video game originally released for Nintendo’s Super Nintendo Entertainment System™. This comic book version by manga and anime legend Shotaro Ishinomori (Cyborg 009Kamen Rider) was first serialized in Nintendo Power™ magazine and later collected into a graphic novel in 1993. Long out of print, this stunning, full-color graphic novel is now available once again for the first time in more than twenty years!

“THE LEGEND OF ZELDA: A LINK TO THE PAST is such a rare book, showcasing world-famous manga creator Shotaro Ishinomori’s incredible art with the classic Nintendo story of Link and his quest to save Princess Zelda against all odds. We are honored and excited to make the publication available once again to North American readers from the Perfect Square library,” says Beth Kawasaki, Senior Editorial Director, Perfect Square. “Many older fans recall eagerly awaiting each new issue of Nintendo Power magazine back in the ‘90s for a new monthly chapter of A LINK TO THE PAST. While it followed the overall story arc of the original Super Entertainment System game, creatorIshinomori also added new plot twists and characters that made this a stand-alone favorite among multiple generations of fans. Readers of all ages will be captivated by this timeless story and we can’t wait for everyone to enjoy this long-out-of-print book!”

Shotaro Ishinomori was one of Japan’s most prolific and revered comic book creators. Among his most popular works are Cyborg 009, Kamen Rider and Hotel. In 2008, Guinness World Records named Ishinomori the world record holder for the “most comics published by one author” for creating more than 770 stories collected in a total of 500 volumes of manga. The Ishinomori Manga Museum in Japan is dedicated to his works and legacy.

I’m pretty excited to take a look. VIZ does some pretty fantastic reprint work and for new or old fans alike, this is a classic that you sure don’t want to miss the second (or third) time around!

Frank Portman has been a big influence on me for over half my life. From his days as the songwriter and front man for the popular rock group The Mr. T Experience to his current work as an author, Frank’s writing has played a big role in how I see and reinterpret the world in my own storytelling. Obviously, I jump at the chance to talk writing with him any chance I get and in this special bonus episode we catch up to talk about his new book ‘King Dork Approximately’, the demise and resurgence of his rock band The Mr. T Experience and the herculean task of creating stories from a personal place that resonate with a larger audience. If you’re a writer or creative of any form I think you’ll love this episode!

Author Robert Peterson guests on the show this week to talk about his brand new book ‘The Odds’! Set in a post-apocalyptic future where people are forced to fight in a Mad Max style game of chess, this book sounds like it’s right up our alleys! Ben is back on the show and shares with us his adventure over the weekend in Milwaukee… and why you may not want to go to a convention in the mid-west in the middle of Winter. We sift through the Oscar controversies and pick out some favorites and American Sniper racks up the body count at the weekend box office. Will the attachment of a Batman V Superman trailer do the same for Jupiter Ascending? And should Geekscape start a gang?

And what’s the difference between his depiction of Batman and Captain America on the ‘Avengers’ cartoon? And how has his Sonic the Hedgehog voice changed over the year? Did ‘Batman: Arkham City’ get a bad rap? Plus! Jonathan reveals a story about burning his GI Joe toys as a kid that leaves him in tears!

Amber Benson arrives on the Geekscape show to talk about her brand new novel “The Witches of Echo Park”! We talk to Amber about writing, what her literary influences are and of course ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’! What are the dangers of doing a 3 hour Reddit AMA? What is her best and worst exchange with a fan? And just how sexual a book is “The Witches of Echo Park”? Things get a little raunchy as Ben geeks out and we all go a little blue! I recommend ‘Essex County’ to Amber and she talks about her cinephile love of ‘Nights of Cabiria’! Yes! It’s THAT weird of a Geekscape… and we wouldn’t have it any other way!

The day we’ve all been waiting for is finally here! No! Not Black Friday! I’m talking about the arrival of the new Star Wars teaser trailer that we DON’T have to go to the theaters to enjoy (but we still probably should ‘cuz big screen and all)!

This trailer doesn’t give us much, but we do get to see some amazing new tweaks to the Star Wars universe, including a cool ball droid, a tri-saber, the new look Stormtroopers and shots of newcomers John Boyega and Daisy Ridley in action.

Many of us have been skeptical since the Prequels, keeping our growing excitement at bay, but when that John Williams score kicks in and you see the Millennium Falcon take on some tie fighters you can’t help but get those old familiar chills from your childhood!

Too bad those of us in the US have to wait until December 18, 2015 to see the rest!

Geekscape and ReedPOP, the company that puts on NYCC (and other cons) have been buddy buddy for about 2 years, since our first time at NYCC. And now they have a Black Friday deal they wanted me to share with you Geekscapists!

Why risk your life going out on Black Friday when ReedPOP has a 25% off sale of Marvel exclusive merch and t-shirts and other items in their store? And it’s not just Marvel. They’ve got some great Star Trek and Star Wars apparel as well. A lot of these items (like the RARE Rocket Raccoon Plush) won’t be available past 12/31, and some of it is already sold out, so you’ll want to take a look at their selections on the ReedPOP site.

RocketRaccoonPlush
You so want this…!

Here’s a quick link to the Limited Edition Marvel stuff if you want to get a head start on your X-Mas shopping (I wear a size Large. Just sayin’…).

We’re definitely going to pick up a few things this Friday and may even be giving some of them away on the site or on the show so keep watching this space!

And to see OUR experience at NYCC, just watch this video from the Con!

And oh yeah! Some of the cool things that will be on sale from our friends this Friday:

Hydra/SHIELD Messenger Bag

It’s been a while since we talked comics… so this episode is going to roll deep in the four colored funnies! Matt Hiscox, my cohost from The Comic Book Show on Twin Galaxies Live, guests on Geekscape to talk about all things Marvel and DC (and maybe some indie titles too)! Are the big events starting to wear the comic book renaissance thin again? What comic book TV shows are worth watching? Can Jonathan stay on top of DC’s Multiversity (especially after Pax Americana)? Is Grant Morrison the greatest writer in comics? And why José Luis García-López is the unsung hero of comic book art! There’s a lot of comic book talk on this episode but stay with us! You won’t regret it!

One thing we don’t cover enough on Geekscape is the hugely popular world of RPGs and tabletop gaming! Both have been on a huge upswing in popularity for the past few years and it’s about time we reflected that on the show! To help us wade through the deep waters as a bunch of noobs, Ivan and Dom from Saving Throw join their buddy Ben Dunn to teach Kenny and I about the new generation of tabletop RPGs. We discuss the new mechanics of D&D and the difference between it and Pathfinder. Also, we suggest some other games to the audience, including horror based ones and the growing popularity of real world games like Puzzle Rooms! It’s a brand new day and age with an old familiar game on this episode of Geekscape!

Okay, sorry for the sensational title. It’s really not like that. I just happened to have finished reading some more Blogster Doom jokes and felt a little Click-Baity.

I just returned from an event on the Disney lot celebrating the release next week of James Gunn’s beloved Guardians of the Galaxy on Digital HD (and on Blu-Ray December 9th ) in which he did a short Q&A. One of the questions asked about whether the sequel would explore Peter’s origin, alluded to in the first movie, and whether or not it would parallel the Brian Michael Bendis penned Guardians storyline. In response, James said that the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a lot like the Ultimate Marvel universe and that they can be completely different things. He doesn’t have to make Peter’s father the leader of the Spartax Empire and that he’s not very fond of the name “J’son” which got a few laughs. To paraphrase Gunn: “there are things that work in the comics that don’t really work on screen” and that sticking to the comics origin might be a little too “Star Wars”.

James also made it clear that he had full reign with the Guardians sequel and that the weirder his ideas were for the first film the more Marvel seemed enthusiastic to go in that direction. Considering this is my favorite Marvel movie so far, I’m glad they put that much trust in his unique voice! He didn’t confirm that the sequel would actually address Peter’s origin, just that he knows he doesn’t intend to stick to the comics. In fact, future films that he makes at Marvel may not be Guardians films at all but he did show a fondness for the galactic corner of the universe. James also stated that what happens in the Guardians films may have zero impact on Marvel’s Phase 3 and the events in Avengers: Infinity War 1 & 2.

Of the Blu-Ray bonus features shown to us, the deleted scenes were short but definitely the highlight. One of the best scenes was an exchange between Gamora and Nebula on the Dark Astor, shortly after Ronan tells Gamora to find the Orb. It helps illuminate their tortured relationship with each other and being raised by Thanos and has a lot of character and information but was cut early because there was just “too much time on the Dark Astor and it slowed down the first act”.

Two of the later cut scenes involved Rocket and Groot arguing by the fountain before trying to capture Peter (which was hilarious) and a scene with Gamora shortly after leaving the Dark Astor in which she kills Ronan’s troops that were sent to accompany her. Pretty great stuff that sets up all of the characters meeting on their own. Another hilarious cut scene involved John C. Reilly’s Nova Corps member trying to fix one of the busted lights on the front of his jacket.

All in all, I can’t wait to rematch this film on Blu-Ray. I love how unique the movie is and how much it showcases the diverse aspects of the Marvel universe we all grew up with. The Behind The Scenes extra on designing Groot and Rocket really shows the care and thought that went into bringing these more challenging characters to screen and why I think they ended up so relatable (even if they’re a talking raccoon and plant!)

I definitely recommend each of you seek out this release for yourselves next week, not only to relive an awesome film but also for a pretty entertaining set of extras. I’m glad I attended. Thanks for the invite, Marvel!

If you’ve been a Geekscape reader/listener/follower for at least a month then you no doubt know about my endless love for all things Studio Ghibli. It started in the mid-90s while I was a high school student. I would attend Friday night Anime Club screenings at the University of Texas, where I discovered my love for movies like Laputa: Castle in the Sky and Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. Plus, I thought it was cool to be hanging out with college students years before I went on to college (where I shamefully would never attend a single Anime Club screening or meeting at my own alma mater).

In 1997, Studio Ghibli released Princess Mononoke, one of their most successful films of all time. It followed a wild, forest spirit of a princess as she rode a giant wolf and engaged the human forces that encroached on the natural world and upset the forest gods. It stands as one of Studio Ghibli’s greatest accomplishments and if you’re going to start exploring their library (what’s been keeping you?!?), Princess Mononoke is a great place to start. I’ve loved the film since I first saw it on the big screen.

Which is why it’s amazing to learn that the Princess Mononoke that I know and love is not the original version… by a wide shot. Just take a look at this:

PrincessMononoke-TheFirstStory-3D

In 1980, 17 years before the film’s release, Hayao Miyazaki envisioned a much different story for Princess Mononoke, and now it’s being detailed in a book from Viz Media entitled Princess Mononoke: The First Story. The book sounds about as epic as the movie too. According to the press release:

The oversized (11¾ x 11¾ inch) hardcover release is published under the Studio Ghibli Library imprint and carries an MSRP of $34.99 U.S. / $39.99 CAN. The beautifully illustrated storybook features Hayao Miyazaki’s original watercolor artwork, which complements his thoughtfully written fable about man’s need to maintain ecological balance with nature that became the origin for the 1997 feature film. An afterward written by Miyazaki lends further context and insights to the Mononoke story and its deep and lasting impact upon the director.

This is the original Princess Mononoke story, created by Hayao Miyazaki in 1980 while he was first conceptualizing the landmark animated film that would be released to universal acclaim seventeen years later. As an initial version of the tale, it offers a new and significantly different perspective from the final version presented in the film. After a long, exhausting war, a samurai lost in a forest encounters a giant wildcat – a mononoke. The beast saves his life, but at the price of his daughter’s hand in marriage…

Princess Mononoke was a historic release for Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli and propelled the animation auteur to an entirely new level of international fame,” says Masumi Washington, Senior Editorial Director. “But few know of THE FIRST STORY, the imaginative fable that was the genesis for his groundbreaking film. This premium storybook fittingly presents it for the very first time in English and prominently displays his expressive watercolor characters and landscapes. We look forward to readers discovering Princess Mononoke in a whole new way in this unique release!”

Um, a giant wildcat?!? Just look at that picture! He’s riding a unicycle with strings attached to mice pulling him and a princess on his back. This is like getting a completely different story! And seeing as Hayao Miyazaki has officially retired (again!), it’s worth picking up this book just to get yet another story from this living legend!

I’m excited to receive my copy. Viz does a great job with their Studio Ghibli line of releases. The editions that they put out for My Neighbor Totoro are incredibly well done, with really handsome presentations and a print and binding quality deserving of Studio Ghibli’s level of excellence. But this one might just top all that. A giant wildcat riding a unicycle being pulled by mice on string.

Princess Mononoke: The First Story is currently available so go out and pick up your copy or visit www.VIZ.com for more info!

Big news, Geekscapists, that a lot of you have been wanting for months now… NEW WEEKLY EPISODES OF THE GEEKSCAPE PODCAST!

We’ve been on this journey for 8 years now. Looking back, I can hardly believe it. Putting together Geekscape, the podcast, the site, the community and more has been one of the most rewarding things in my life. But it’s also been a small army’s worth of work. There’s no way I could do it without the help of everyone involved today or in years past. And of course I couldn’t do it without you.

And now I have some good news as a sign of thank you! After a sporadic first nine months of 2014, the Geekscape podcast is returning to a weekly schedule! This was the seed from which our little community was born and it’s about time we watered it!

Now hosted exclusively on Soundcloud, and still distributed on iTunes, Podcast One and Stitcher, the Geekscape podcast will also now be recorded weekly LIVE IN STUDIO with our friends at TradioV! Every Monday at 7pm PST!

And because we hate wasting time… we’re starting it all up THIS MONDAY, OCTOBER 6th, at 7pm PST!

Our friends Linus and Parry from Nerf Herder (the Buffy the Vampire Slayer theme song) are our first guests!

This includes a live and recorded in studio video stream for you to watch each week! Just like with our friends at Toadhop, you can call also in live and be a part of the show yourself!

I am so happy to be returning to a studio to do the show. Not only does it help ensure a better sounding show, it makes it easier for me to deliver an episode each week and bring in bigger and better guests for all of you! And you can watch it and call in! Those are the things I always wanted the show to include and I’ve been working hard to bring them to you.

You’ll definitely want to subscribe to our Soundcloud page and catch our first episode back this Monday at TradioV!

Thanks for being a part of this journey, whether this is your first time with Geekscape or if you’ve been with us for 8+ years! We’re going to have a lot more fun for even more years to come!

Geekscape is returning to NYCC… and we want to hang out!

We’ll be walking the Javits Center and getting into trouble during the day, but at night, it’ll be time to get together, take a load off and catch up! So why not meet some of your fellow Geekscapists? Maybe our Charlie Day look alike will return!

I know NY natives Eric Francisco and Big Yanks will be there!

Here are the details:

Friday, October 10th!

We are meeting at Lansdowne Road! They’re a few blocks North of the Con, a short walk or shorter taxi ride!

599 10th Ave  New York, NY 10036

lansdowne-party-room-4

Check out their menu (it’s affordable and good).

Dinner – 7pm (everyone handles their own tab)

Hanging Out – 8pm and on!

Perhaps we will find that mysterious nameless Geekscapist again this year… Last year, he regaled Big Yanks and I with his stories of geekdom and growing up as a Geekscapist… and then left into the night, never to be seen again…

Obviously we’ve been big fans of Sean Astin for years. Goonies, Rudy, TMNT, The Lord of the Rings and now The Strain have made us all lifelong fans. But there’s a lot about Sean that you may not know, like how active he is in politics and that he’s an avid runner. Well, you’re going to know all that now as he guests on the show and tells us about his conflicted character on The Strain, stepping barefoot into Middle Earth, being involved in politics and his talk show Vox Populi and whether or not he can keep pace with me as a distance runner (he can)! I think you’ll find him to be everything you expected: a smart, thoughtful guy who is passionate about everything he does. I loved having him on the show!
