Briefly: If you’re a Geekscape (or Geekscape Games) regular, you know full well just how much I’ve loved the first four episodes of DONTNOD’s Life is Strange.

2015 has been a year filled with incredible game releases (with a few more still on the way). yet every time I think about the best titled I’ve played so far this year, my mind always wanders back to Max and Chloe’s incredible time-jumping adventure.

Four episodes of the game’s first season have been released, each somehow better and more emotional than the last, and DONTNOD today (on Max’s birthday, no less) have finally revealed just when we’ll be able to get our hands on the game’s fifth and final episode.

“We don’t normally announce a date until we know the game is 100% ready but in the spirit of Max’s birthday (today) we wanted to let you know early that we are aiming to release Episode 5 ‘Polarized’ October 20.”

I’m both excited and terrified for the upcoming release, as those who are up to date with the game know the horrifying situation that Max found herself in at the close of episode four. I honestly have no idea what will happen at any moment of ‘Polarized’, but I sure hope that Max makes it out okay.

DONTNOD has stated that if the game gets a second season, it’ll likely feature an all new cast and plot. I’m a huge fan of fresh experiences, but it’s going to be hard as hell to say goodbye to Max and Arcadia Bay.

During Sony’s press conference at this year’s Tokyo Game Show, Spike Chunsoft officially revealed Danganrona 3, complete with its first trailer.

Originally said to have been in the works at last year’s TGS, this reveal trailer comes fresh off the heels of the latest game, Ultra Despair Girls, releasing in the West, so everyone should be on the same page when it comes to the story! Teasing a brand new academy, and a type of testimony called “skimmish,” where multiple classmates give their sides of the story at the same time, it’ll be even harder to cut through their words to find the truth. With Monokuma, Monomi, Shirokuma and Kurokuma all making appearances in the trailer, could they all be in the main game as well? Or were they simply stand ins for the yet to be revealed cast? All I know is that I hope that line about Togami being dead was only an example and not a spoiler.

Watch it below and tell us what kind of despair you hope the third main game in this popular text adventure will bring. Danganronpa 3 will release on the PS Vita, as well as making its console debut on the PS4, on a yet to be determined release date.

Once upon a time, the King Of Fighters series was an annual affair. In more recent years however, the SNK/Playmore team took their time to revamp the game play and give the fighter a visual facelift, creating some of the most gorgeous 2D models we had seen at that point. Then… Nothing. Five years after KOF XIII hit arcades, we haven’t heard anything about the return of the long running franchise, which was odd considering the recent resurgence of 2D fighting games. At Tokyo Game Show however, we learned that we won’t have to wait much longer, because King Of Fighter XIV is on its way after the longest release gap in franchise history.

Headed to the PS4 in 2016, the reveal trailer showed off longtime rivals, Kyo Kusanagi and Iori Yagami, battling it out yet again. Except this time, their models are in full 3D, scrapping those incredible sprites that we were introduced to just a few games ago. Outside of this reveal, details are slim, but we’ll be excited to learn more as its release date draws closer.

Personally, I’m REALLY disappointed to see the 2D sprites go, not just because of nostalgia, but because these new, 3D models look kind of bad. I’m getting the vibe of one of those KOF Maximum Impact titles from it, which isn’t a good thing. When games like Guilty Gear Xrd can blend 2D and 3D so seamlessly, or when titles like Mortal Kombat X and Street Fighter IV prove that 3D models in a 2D space can come off as gorgeous, this trailer makes it look a little cheap. Still, it’s a long ways away, and it can still surprise us. Plus, as long as the game play is solid, (and when hasn’t it been?), then all will be forgiven.

Rumors have been swirling for months about a possible PS4 remaster of Gravity Rush, the Vita exclusive action title that gave players the power to control gravity to manipulate its heroine and her surroundings. In addition, a sequel was announced at Tokyo Game Show 2014, but no further details were discussed, including which platform it would end up on. Both questions were addressed in one fell swoop at Tokyo Game Show 2015, where both Gravity Rush Remastered and Gravity Rush 2 were revealed as PS4 exclusives!

The remastered version of the first game is set for an early 2016 release, with its sequel arriving later in the year. With Gravity Rush being one of my absolute favorite titles in years, I’m thrilled that the original will get the due it deserves by being exposed to a much bigger audience. At the same time, I’m a little surprised that the second game isn’t coming to Vita as well, (although I probably shouldn’t be.) From the trailer, it doesn’t seem like it’s too technologically advanced to be on Sony’s handheld, (although the city coming alive at the end looks amazing,) so it’s pointing more to the idea that Sony just doesn’t see any value in releasing the game on their portable console. If this isn’t proof that the company sees the Vita as dead, then I don’t know what is.

Regardless, between the team ups with her former rival, Raven, new, bigger enemies and the return of Kat and Dusty, there’s plenty of reason to be excited. As we get closer to Street Fighter V‘s 2016 release date, more of the roster has been slowly revealed. Unveiled in Dubai, the latest reveal is the second of four promised original characters with Rashid, a Middle Eastern fighter who uses the power of wind to compliment his nimble attacks.

Using parkour inspired movements to overwhelm his opponents, Rashid is a tech fanatic who is always on the lookout for the newest gadgets. A laid back fighter, this doesn’t mean opponents should take the newcomer lightly. When not lining up for hours outside the Apple Store, he can be found putting the hurt on his opponents pretty easily.

Briefly: Alright, so this video is completely in Japanese and I don’t understand Japanese whatsoever.

So… most of it is lost on me.

But what’s pretty clear here regardless of the language that you speak, is that a new Hot Shots Golf title is in the works for PS4.

The game is slated to release on PS4 in Japan in 2016, and while a North American release hasn’t been confirmed thus far, I’m pretty confident we’ll be getting our hands on it too.

I’ve been playing the series since the PSX days, and after feeling all of the nostalgic feelings from this video, I’m more than ready to jump back in on my PS4.

If you aren’t in the know, Bethesda launched this kitschy campaign detailing all the different aspects of the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. attributes in Fallout 4. It’s the normal Fallout affair, all done in the style of a 1950’s product overview film.

Jack the Ripper begins his reign of terror in an all-new campaign, available in the Assassin’s Creed Syndicate Gold Edition.

One of the most appealing things of the Assassin’s Creed series is the integration of fiction with actual historical facts. The Ezio trilogy had the perfect combination of fictional story telling, blended with text book accurate retelling of historical events. Brotherhood was my favorite in the series for this reason, probably due to the fact that I am a HUGE geek for the Renaissance time period. I flipped my shit when I ran into the Medici!

Seeing Ubisoft take the well known tale of Jack The Ripper really has me excited. Reminds me of the Black Dahlia Murders from LA Noire, putting a fictional ending to the unknown.

After playing through three remakes, three spinoffs, and an anime that roughly puts it all together, it’s about time for a brand new Hyperdimension Neptunia title, isn’t it? And not a spinoff or another remake, (not that there’s anything left TO remake at his point,) but a true, core title that advances the lore of Gamindustri.

Well, it looks like we won’t have to wait much longer! Idea Factory has announced that the long awaited sequel to 2012’s Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory will finally hit the PS4 in early 2016, under the title of MegaDimension Neptunia VII. That’s “V-2”, not 7. You know the Japanese and their wacky numbering system.

MegaDimension puts players back into the floppy shoes of Neptune, who is tasked with traveling across three different worlds to save Gamindustri, complete with new characters, environments, and CPUs. In addition, the game play is said to be getting a much needed overhaul, with the new “Parts Break” mechanic, which lets the goddesses cut their enemies into pieces to lower their attacks, “Giant Battles”, which will take a new type of strategy to win, and NEXT mode, a Next Gen upgrade that gives the four goddesses brand new, more powerful transformations to go with their new outfits. A new dungeon mini-game rounds out what we know so far, which pays homage to Spelunker. However it plays, it has to be better than Stella’s Dungeon in Re;Birth 2, right?

So step aside, Uncharted 4 and Legend of Zelda, because the game of the year 2016 is already decided! Want to know what all the hubbub is about? Briefly: As if Fallout 4 needed any more advertisement, Bethesda today launched a hilarious new campaign called ‘Do You Know What Makes You S.P.E.C.I.A.L.?’.

S.P.E.C.I.A.L., of course, is an acronym that stands for Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility, Luck. This makes up the character stat system in the Fallout series, and it’s pretty freaking clever.

The video campaign began today with a video detailing the Strength stat, and just what it can do for you in the game. The video comes in the format of a 1950’s style cartoon, and as with all Fallout marketing, it’s so freaking cool.

With the largest expansion to Destiny just FIVE days away, Bungie and Activision have just dished out this brand new live action launch trailer for The Taken King. Check it out!

The Taken King plans to bring a GIANT amount of content and story to the game, and extra story is what Destiny desperately needs. The expansion was preempted by a big ole’ update this week introducing the new core changes to the game, as well as adding Nolan North’s performance as your Ghost sidekick.

There isn’t much to say about the trailer. I PERSONALLY feel it falls a tad short, especially considering some of the AMAZING live action trailers that have come out of Halo. I blame Activision, the music (much like the Led Zeppelin from the previous live action trailer) just doesn’t fit the Destiny universe. This all makes a lot of sense considering what was learned during the Marty O’Donnell lawsuit.

Destiny: The Taken King hit’s store shelves next Tuesday, September 15th and is available on all platforms where you can find Destiny! 

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is easily one of the most popular games this year. Even some of the best games can experience bugs, much like the one in MGSV.

Under specific circumstances, the save file of your game can halt and or get corrupted. Konami dishes on their blog today with what is the cause, and how to avoid losing your precious progress.

In “METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN” which was released on September 1st, 2015 there is a possibility that the game stops progress if having Quiet as a buddy while playing “Mission 29” or “Mission 42”. This situation can be avoided by not using Quiet as a buddy while playing either “Mission 29” or “Mission 42”.

Seems like an easy thing to avoid, no word on a patch or a hotfix from Konami.

Looks like we’ve already got our long term Fallout 4 gameplan all sorted. With the announcement that there are no level caps in Fallout 4, we were all pretty happy with the end game content of the game.

Bethesda let loose this great bounty of news on their official blog today. That besides the normally expected hotfixes and free content we’ve come to expect from Bethesda, they’ve announced some SWEET details of their Season Pass,paid DLC releases and their mod support!

The most important thing in our games is the freedom you have to create your own experience, and modding is a big part of that. Like all our previous games, we’ve made sure to keep Fallout 4 open and moddable at every step in development. Early next year we’ll release for free the new Creation Kit for the PC. This is the same tool we use in the studio. You’ll be able to create your own mods and share them with others. We’re especially excited these same mods will then be coming to Xbox One, and then PlayStation 4.

 
We’ve always done a lot of DLC for our games. We love making them and you always ask us for more. To reward our most loyal fans, this time we’ll be offering a Season Pass that will get you all of the Fallout 4 DLC we ever do for just $30. Since we’re still hard at work on the game, we don’t know what the actual DLC will be yet, but it will start coming early next year. Based on what we did for Oblivion, Fallout 3, and Skyrim, we know that it will be worth at least $40, and if we do more, you’ll get it all with the Season Pass.

 

Thanks again to all of you! The support and excitement you’ve given Fallout 4 has blown us away. It’s energized us even more to do everything we can in these final months to make this our best game yet. We absolutely can’t wait for you to play it, and share your adventures with us and each other.

Usually the term “Season Pass” is met with furrowed brows and furiously angry comments on Reddit, but in the case of Fallout 4, I’m okay with it. The expansions that have come with past “modern” Fallout titles have always at least met their dollar amount in play value. It is refreshing to know that they haven’t event begun to start WORKING on the expansions. FABULOUS!

Briefly: I feel like Warner Bros. did a really bad job released Mad Max today, on the very same day as the release of the probably-last-ever Metal Gear game.

But, the game is pretty awesome (at least from what I’ve seen, my fiancé has been hogging it all day), and the publisher has just released an equally awesome launch trailer to go with it.

The graphics, mechanics, voice acting, music, and more all look great from what I’ve seen so far, and I really can’t wait to get my hands on it. I feel almost as tortured as Max is, however, as once it’s my turn on the PS4, I’ll likely skip Max at first to play the it’s-so-deep-I’ll-never-finish-it Metal Gear Solid V.

Surprise! After a dedicated group of fans pushed for R. Mika, the female wrestler who looked up to Zangief from the Street Fighter Alpha series, to be added to the growing Street Fighter IV roster, they… Ultimately didn’t get what they wanted. But as they say, better late than never. Capcom has announced that R. Mika will make her re-debut as the latest character to be revealed for Street Fighter V, and she’s not alone!

Bringing in her tag team partner, Nadeshiko, (who was formerly only shown during some of Mika’s special attacks,) Mika’s V-Skill allows the pair to bring on some double team action. Allowing easy mix ups, Nadeshiko can attack from above, below or behind while the main player continues their standard assault. Naturally, when all else fails, you can always give them a Stone Cold Stunner.

So far, Capcom has done an amazing job with making each character feel unique compared to their past iterations, and Mika looks to be no exception. Who do you want to see join the cast next? Let us know in the comments, and make sure to watch the video below to see this pair in action.

Sony today officially revealed just when we’ll be able to step back into Nathan Drake’s shoes, and it’s just six months away: March 18th, 2016.

It’s hard to believe that Until Dawn is finally here. First announced for the Playstation 3 back at GamesCom in 2012, as a survival-horror fan I was instantly enamoured with the idea of playing through a slasher flick. The first-person perspective, Playstation Move-based title was to be the game that would have me dust off my Move controllers, and the immersion of actually controlling the character’s flashlights would likely prove too much for me to handle.

Then, Until Dawn disappeared, only to re-emerge at GamesCom 2014 as a Playstation 4 exclusive. In its transition to a new generation, Until Dawn lost its first-person perspective and Move support, and gained some gorgeous visuals and a talented, recognizable cast. Pretty fair trade, if you ask me (though that Move support actually looked awesome).

Now it’s August 2015, and Until Dawn is finally here, though unless you were waiting for its release, you probably had no idea, as Sony’s marketing machine is apparently turned off for this title. It sort of makes sense, as earlier this year the publisher released another very cinematic, short (really short) title (The Order: 1886) that had gamers polishing their pitchforks because ‘it wasn’t a real game’.

The story is rife with horror tropes, and for the most part, they actually all work pretty well. You’ll take control of eight (old looking) teens gathered at a remote (Canadian) mountain lodge over the course of one night. They’re there on the one-year anniversary of the disappearance of two of their friends (who disappeared from the same remote mountain lodge), to remember them, and to, of course, party. Things turn sour pretty quickly, as the group discovers that they’re not as alone as they thought they were. It’s then up to you to ensure that they survive UNTIL DAWN… Did I mention that the surrounding area also contains an abandoned sanatorium and a partially collapsed mine with a terrible history?

Yep, the story is cheesy (and campy) as hell, but every trope and cliché actually lends itself quite well to the tone of the game. You feel as though you’re playing through a slasher flick, but a fun slasher flick that never takes itself overly seriously. Until Dawn builds a phenomenal atmosphere, and can be truly terrifying at (many) times, but you’ll find yourself laughing just as often as you feel your palms sweating from fear. It’s really a great balance that’s designed to keep you playing the game, which is a huge paradigm shift from all-scary games like Alien: Isolation (which I love but can only play in 20-minute chunks).

Now, to really enjoy Until Dawn you’ll likely need to be a fan of either horror (duh), David Cage style games like Beyond: Two Souls or Heavy Rain, or at least open minded to an atypical gaming experience. Just like the aforementioned titles, Until Dawn plays like more of a heavily interactive movie than it does a traditional video game. Sure, you’ll get to walk around a lot of tense, dark, scary locales, but most of the ‘action’ is regulated to tough, time-limited choices and quicktime events. Things start out fairly forgiving, miss a quicktime event and you’ll likely have a chance to recover, but later in the game I found times where one missed button press led to a character’s demise. There are also some truly terrifying (and clever) ‘Don’t Move’ moments, in which you must hold the DualShock 4 controller as still as possible in order to remain hidden. These were definitely some of the most stressful moments in my play through of the game.

As I mentioned earlier, you’re taking control of eight potential survivors over the course of the game. The evening is broken up into ten chapters that seem to split playtime fairly evenly between most of the characters. Between each chapter you’ll have a therapy session with Dr. Alan Hill, a creepy as hell psychiatrist who analyzes your fears, which characters you like and dislike (you’re going to dislike Emily), and tells you just how much you’re screwing things up. According to Supermassive Games, every character can survive the night, or everyone can die, depending entirely on the choices that you make. This means that you’ll probably want to replay the game (I know that I did the instant that I finished it), and that things can turn out starkly different each time you play. As always, there are a variety of collectible ‘clues’ to be found that provide you with some interesting backstory, and (of course) gets you closer to that cherished Platinum Trophy.

Visually, the game is gorgeous. It runs on the Killzone: Shadowfall engine which seems to have aged extremely well over these past two years. There really isn’t an aspect of the game that doesn’t look good. Indoor and outdoor environments have a very real feel to them, trees and branches sway in the wind, your characters leave tracks (or even blood) in the snow. Cinematography in the game is simply brilliant, constant, tense camera angles echo the early days of Resident Evil and Silent Hill, and do a fantastic job of making you feel as though you’re seconds away from the next scare, even if you’re nowhere near it. The characters themselves look and sound phenomenal; Supermassive used recognizable talent like Heroes Hayden Paettiere, Mr. Robot’s Rami Malek, and many more, and performance capture technology akin to Rockstar’s LA Noire to skyrocket the game’s production values and make it feel even more like an interactive film.

Optimization, however, leaves a bit to be desired. The game can go from silky smooth to a stuttering mess from time to time, which can really break the fantastic immersion felt the rest of the time. There’s the occasional lip sync issue, and I had a few instances where sound effects seemed as though they didn’t hit at just the right time (which is, of course, immensely important to a horror title). Other (non-technical) issues are few and far between; a so-cheesy-its-bad line of dialogue here and there, etc. I’ve read a few opinions stating that the story took a too-crazy turn for its third act, but I found the misdirection to be incredibly clever, and the third act to be, by far, the most tense section of the game.

If you can’t tell from the 1000+ words you’ve just read, I had a freaking blast with Until Dawn. I played through its ten hour journey in just three sittings, and it was one of the hardest games in recent memory to actually stop playing. I’m itching to jump back in and just see what else I can discover, see how many characters I can actually save, and to dig deeper into the troubled history of the mountain.

Until Dawn scores a campy 4/5.

Coolest feature that I wasn’t able to test: If you own a Playstation Camera, the game will actually record your reactions to certain scary moments. Super clever.

Briefly: Mortal Kombat fan eagerly awaiting the release of Mortal Kombat X on PS3 or Xbox 360 because you haven’t bitten the bullet on a current generation console yet?

Well, we hope that you weren’t holding your breath. Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment revealed today that the game will not release for either console.

Here’s the announcement, straight from the official forum:

After months of development, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has come to the regrettable conclusion that we cannot release Mortal Kombat X for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Please know our teams worked diligently to meet the quality standards set by the current-gen versions of the game. Fans eagerly waiting for the highly anticipated Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows DLC can rest easy. Today, the good people at Yacht Club Games  have given us a brand new trailer to admire.  Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows is a DLC update to the 2014 indie hit Shovel Knight.  This additional content allows you to play as one of Shovel Knight’s foes, Plague Knight. Unlike Shovel Knight, Plague Knight will play very differently. While there’s still no concrete release, the video promises that the update will release soon and be FREE for everyone who owns the game. Check out the enchanting trailer below and get hype! Briefly: I never realized how emotional this moment would be.

The launch trailer for Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain has just debuted online, and more than an exciting trailer for what’s bound to be one of the best games of the year (if not the generation), this final Hideo Kojima-directed video feels like the lauded director’s sombre goodbye to his baby.

Since the first time that I played Metal Gear Solid as an eight year old in 1998, I’ve been enthralled with the series, its incredible characters, its mind-blowing gameplay, and even its convoluted and confusing story.

Now, with Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Hideo’s vision is all but coming to an end. After his falling out with Konami which also led to Silent Hills getting the axe, it’s pretty safe to say the next game from the creator will be picked up by another publisher.

The trailer takes us through quick glimpses of each main-series Metal Gear title, all while depressing, minor-keyed music plays in the background. Afterwards, we get a glimpse of a gigantic new Metal Gear which looks like a tough-as-nails opponent. Quick credits reveal Kojima’s name about 100 times (which would be 100 times more than the box art will), and then it all fades to black.

Anyone else wish they could give Kojima a hug?

Briefly: It’s been a long time coming (like a whole console generation), but we’re finally just a week away from the launch of the Mad Max video game.

I know how excited Shane’s been for the title, but for some reason it’s slipped under my radar until now. Then I watched this newly released TV Spot and realized that it’s a freaking Mad Max video game.

How could it not be great?

The graphics, mechanics, voice acting, music, and more all look great from the videos that I’ve seen so far, and I really can’t wait to get my hands on it. I feel almost as tortured as Max is, however, as of course the game launches on the same day as the it’s-so-deep-I’ll-never-finish-it Metal Gear Solid V.

Yes. Madden. THAT Madden. The definition of “same game every year” has done something creative, and spawned this hilarious trailer. It will arguably be more enjoyable than the actual game, but none the less, it looks like EA Sports has done something worth while with that Madden money.

Briefly: All of us were pretty bummed out back in March when Sony revealed that its highly anticipated exclusive Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End was being pushed into 2016.

Naughty Dog’s been pretty quiet on that subject since that day, and though the E3 demo was beyond impressive, all we want to know is when we can play the damned thing.

Take it with a grain of salt, but the game’s released date may have been leaked by Amazon Germany.

A reddit user received an email from the company, which contained a hard release date of March 9th, 2016. This falls right in the window that Naughty Dog gave us, and while it could be an error on Amazon’s part, it could also legitimately be the date that we’re able to continue Nathan’s journey.

Briefly: Well, this is a good way to move some additional PS4 units.

During Disney’s amazing D23 expo, Sony took to the stage to reveal a duo of awesome upcoming PS4 bundles.

Now, I’ve owned a PS4 since launch day, and the unit is basically impossible to see in my entertainment unit, but I have half a mind to replace it with this fantastic special edition. Just look at the damned thing:

The bundles will be available on November 17th (with pre-order information coming soon). Both bundles will include the Darth Vader 500gb console, a slick controller modelled after Vader’s chest panel, and a Star Wars Classics download code, which includes Super Star Wars, Star Wars: Racer Revenge, Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter and Star Wars Bounty Hunter (playable for the first time on PS4, and sporting enhanced graphics and Trophy support).

Where the bundles differ? One will include the Star Wars Battlefront digital deluxe edition, and the other will come with a physical copy of Disney Infinity 3.0 Edition, the Disney Infinity Base, the Rise Against the Empire Play Set Pack (featuring Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa figures, as well the Rise Against the Empire Play Set piece), and the Boba Fett figure (which is exclusive to PlayStation through this holiday).

Sierra is a company near and dear to my heart. Besides Rare, they were my first introduction into the world of videogames. Founded in 1980, by Ken and Roberta Williams, Sierra would go on to create such classic adventure and puzzle games such as The Incredible Machine, Leisure Suit Larry, King’s Quest, and many more. Sadly, the company has been missing for the last 6 years. Fear not though, because just last year, Sierra has re-opened their doors and is ready to start making new memories with a brand new generation of gamers. This brings us to one of their first new outings, Shiftlings.

This Adventure Puzzle game is about 2 alien janitors who are connected together by a cord and can inflate themselves at will. Together, they will travel across 5 different planets and 50 levels to overcome all odds. Oh, did I also mention that they’re being recorded as part of a reality TV show called Shiftlings? Weird, huh? So, can Shiftlings re-capture the fun and quirkiness that Sierra games of old had?

Art Style & Sound

Art style in the game is very nice. All the backgrounds for all the different levels and worlds are nicely textured and extremely bright and colorful. Even in the most basic asteroid space level the colors pop out nicely and really help make the levels and worlds feel different. Sound effects are very animated; making the game feel like it’s straight out of a Saturday morning cartoon. To further help with that is the music, which is very ambient and help sets the tone that these 2 janitors are all alone on these planets. There are also cut scenes, which are very well animated and voice acted. They help break up the game in certain sections and provide just enough laughs to keep you going to the next.

Gameplay & Negatives

The gameplay in Shiftlings is easy to learn, but difficult to master. At any point in a level you can switch which characters to move and which one to inflate. You can also move both of them at once in order to bounce across large gaps and collect hidden collectible cola bottles in each level. As you steadily progress, the game starts introducing new mechanics such as doors, rotating platforms, and many more. And what kind of Sierra game would this be if there weren’t a variety of death animations? Everything from getting electrocuted, to being incinerated by flames and you’ll want to die as many times as you can. You also have a narrator voice commenting on each of the levels you play and that really helps cement the fact that this is a reality TV show.

While the game excels in many places mentioned above, there are some problems with it. One of the biggest problems is its difficulty. There are some cases where it can ramp up a little too fast, and that may cause novice players to get a little too frustrated with the game. The controls can also be a bit confusing when first starting the game, but after a while you will settle into them.

Final Thoughts & Rating

Shiftlings is a very smart, if not difficult, puzzle game that really re-captures the magic of what made Sierra such an unusual and fun company. Although I thoroughly enjoyed the game and recommend it to expert puzzle fans, I’m not quite sure if novice players would find it easily accessible. In this case I’d recommend downloading a demo of it since it’s on all major platforms with the exception of Wii U (sorry Nintendo fans the E-shop doesn’t have a demo of it.) If you still like it afterwards, then I whole heartedly recommend picking the game up.

FINAL RATING: 3/5. Try it first, then buy it.

What used to be a franchise where multiple releases across nearly every platform every year was considered a sure thing, the world of Yu-Gi-Oh has really dialed it back in the video game department in recent years. For many, (including myself,) the games were always a great tool to gain access to hundreds of potential strategies to experiment with, while developing a firm grasp of new rules as the game evolved. With the recent release of Yu-Gi-Oh: Legacy Of The Duelist, the first game in the series for PS4 and Xbox One is a return to form for the long running series, serving as the most comprehensive game yet! Despite its card pool that reaches over a decade back and heaps of nostalgia however, a few head scratching snags keep it from being the Duelist Kingdom we were hoping for.

As mentioned, Yu-Gi-Oh: Legacy of the Duelist goes as far back as the beginning of the series, all the way up to cards that were released early this year. With over 6,600 cards in total,this is easily the most comprehensive console version released up to this point. If you don’t know the difference between a Blue Eyes White Dragon or a Galaxy Eyes Photon Dragon, if you think Xyz is a dragon cannon, or if the last time your dueled was when you were getting your game on with Jaden in GX, this is far from a problem. Thanks to the game’s campaign mode, (where the bulk of the single player content lies,) each of its four main stories contain about 25 duels, all of which cover the most important events through each anime series. Using text dialogue ripped straight from the show, jumping into each generation starts off with a comprehensive tutorial explaining the new mechanics that were debuted at the time. Even though it’s annoying that veterans can’t skip these, or that the first series has such a long explanation of the most basic mechanics, (I probably wouldn’t be playing if I didn’t know what a Normal Summon is,) its an invaluable tool for those who dropped out throughout the years and want to get caught up with the game a little bit at a time.

Story mode often serves as a game of patience, which in some ways, simulates the struggles each character faced on the show. These scenarios give the player a Story Deck that simulates the cards that were actually used in the episodes they’re drawn from, which can be a blessing and a curse. On one hand, though the decks do have a fair amount of cards they never used, (which is expected when episodes only featured about a dozen cards out of a 40 card deck,) but are mostly accurate, with each staple monster, spell and trap making an appearance. On the other hand, these decks SUCK by today’s standards, especially when starting with the early series. Their only saving grace, (often to our detriment,) is that single player throws ban lists out the window, so its not uncommon to be sent into a deck kicking rage after enduring multiple Dark Hole, Raigeki, and Swords Of Revealing Light cards. Luckily, your opponent’s deck is usually worse, but that luck runs out when it comes to Reverse Duels, unlockable battles where you take control of the losing character. Using their Story Decks makes it almost impossible to win, often having to rely on “the heart of the cards”, to sneak away with a victory. This is why the campaign giving you the option to use custom decks is a gift from Ra, because some of these duels would be almost impossible to beat otherwise. Then again, relying on them took away from the fun found in playing with cards you might never use on your own.

Winning unlocks new Booster Packs based on certain character, cards from the defeated Duelist’s deck, and points to buy new cards with. Lastly, if you want to face these protagonists of the past with a little more challenge, Duelist Challenges allow you to play against them with updated decks. Seeing Kaiba and Yugi using Synchro and Xyz summoning is a sight within itself, while keeping an already lengthy single player mode fresh. If all this content isn’t enough, some of the missing story duels are featured as DLC, many of which had no business being left out, (Jaden vs. Yugi anyone!?) Basically, if it wasn’t featured on U.S. TV, you’re going to have to pay extra for it.

Duels themselves take the form of a variety of phases per turn, with each card having different functions as each phase goes by. Without going too far into detail, each card falls into one of three types. Monsters are used to attack or defend against your opponent, (most of which come with secondary effects,) Spell Cards unleash effects that have the potential to turn a duel around in the user’s favor, and Trap Cards spring surprise effects on the opponent, usually putting a stop to their moves. Speaking of Traps, (and Quick Spells for that matter,) unless you’re brand new to the game, you might want to switch the default settings for Duel Notifications off. Unless of course, you want the game to ask you half a dozen times per turn if you want to use it. It’s all pretty straightforward presentation and game play wise, but the only real issue I came across was with how slow the game moves. Previous versions had ways to speed up turn animations or skip them outright, whereas Next Gen gaming doesn’t seem to have the option to do so. And while seeing signature cards come to life and attack using 3D models, these just drag the game out after you’ve seen them repeatedly with no way to pass them by.

As a real duelist, part of the reason some have had trouble getting into the game is those handful of players with bad attitudes. As we know, the Internet tends to make this attitude so much worse, which is why the acceptable Online Mode is best played with people you know. If you’re expecting to have fun, competitive matches with players around the world, you’ll surely be disappointed by the large amount of rage quitting that takes place. While I wouldn’t normally hold this against the game itself, the fact that it doesn’t give the remaining player the win, or even that it takes so long to make the win official, it gives quitters so much time to sneak away with their record clean. Since there’s no way to Mind Crush over Xbox Live or PSN, avoiding them or accepting this fact going in are your only solutions.

Online play is fun with friends. With strangers, prepare for rage quits.

With so many cards, even veteran duelists might feel a little overwhelmed with gathering the best cards for their deck building needs. Thankfully, the game is generous with its allocation, giving you a variety of ways to unlock them. Primarily, cards are purchased from the Booster Packs mentioned above using Duel Points, (or DP,) which are rewarded for playing and winning duels. Outside of the character packs, Battle Packs make their video game debut, which mirror their real life purpose of building decks right out of the pack. Featuring some of the best cards in the game, Battle Packs test your duel knowledge, forcing you to play a best three out of five series either against the CPU or other players with the same blind deck. Win or lose, you keep the cards for your own deck building needs. Character packs provide their reward immediately, with each set being loaded with cards from each generation. Sadly, with a new console generation comes some of its annoyances, since many of the very best and most up to date cards are locked behind DLC pay walls.

Yet, while having thousands of cards is definitely a great thing, Legacy Of The Duelist‘s biggest flaw is how poorly it handles card management. For one, there are far too few Character Packs, so each one is full of archetypes that the booster’s namesake never used. For example, if Pegasus had his own pack featuring Toons and Relinquished instead of them being forced into Kaiba’s packs, it would make it easier for Seto’s fans to gather up Blue Eyes cards rather than plod through a ton of cards they don’t want. This wouldn’t be a huge problem normally, but the game does a terrible job of filtering out repeats, leaving me opening packs with three of the same card at times. With each set containing hundreds of cards, it makes it almost impossible to get that one card you’re desperate to find without potential hours of pack grinding.

Oh, and the worst part? There is no in game card list telling you what’s in each pack. That’s right, absolutely none! The cards you buy don’t tell you where they came from, and there’s no list telling you if you’re missing anything. With so many cards available, this creates a huge problem for those who want to keep track of where to get more than one of the same card, or who wants to let their friends know where they can find their favorite cards. The only sign of relief is that beating the CPU duelists repeatedly will eventually reward you with their entire deck, but this answer is far from ideal. An online trading system, a card password system like what was used in the past, or a simple list would have gone a long way to improve this aspect of the game. Instead, it serves as its biggest flaw in an otherwise comprehensive title.

Featuring over 6,600 cards spanning nearly 15 years of history, including the newest Pendulum Summon mechanic from the Arc-V era and the debut of Battle Packs, there’s plenty of reason for new and old duelists alike to be excited for Yu-Gi-Oh: Legacy of the Duelist. Best used as a tool to get back into the game, learn it for the first time, and test out a near limitless vault of cards before buying the cards for yourself, it serves its purpose well. A nostalgia filled campaign will keep you playing for hours while Duelist Challenges update the game for your favorites, but its poor online management, thoughtless card management system, slower pace and DLC locked content keep it from being the true king of games. Still, if you wanted an excuse to get your feet wet in the dueling arena, there isn’t a better way to learn the game than Legacy of the Duelist.

– Booster Packs contain far too many cards, making it hard to find your favorites. Having no card list to keep track of your finds make this so much worse, and the lack of a trading or password system means tons of grinding.

– Key cards and story duels locked behind a DLC paywall.

We have yet another gameplay trailer straight from the skies in ‘Star Wars Battlefront’. One of their new modes promises up to twenty players in a single match as they try to complete objectives and stay alive. Watch the gameplay below!

The appearance of the both the Millennium Falcon and the Slave I makes me think that players will also work towards being able to become a hero upon their next respawn. We’ll have to wait for more details. In the meantime, check out our hands-on first impressions!

Coming off the release of Mad Max: Fury RoadMad Max promises to bring the world we’re familiar with into a living and playable world. The game seems to blend Max’s tormented past and over-the-top action pretty well.

The game’s story is a stand-alone piece and will not tie into Fury RoadMad Max also has a tormented video game past of its own. You may remember the first announcement trailer that promised a game coming to last-gen consoles. Obviously that never happened, and the game has since been reworked into what we see above. Regardless, Avalanche Studios seems to have found their way to the game’s completion!

Mad Max is set to release September 1, 2015.
