Over the weekend of NYCC 2013, Marvel announced that the playable demo for Lego Marvel Super Heroes will be available later this week for Xbox 360 and PS3. If you’re impatient, like I am, you can head on over to the official homepage at Lego to download a PC trial version right now!

In the demo, you can expect to see heroes such as The Hulk and Iron Man take it to the villains Sandman and Abomination. Demos are suppose to give you a good idea if you’ll end up liking the game enough to purchase when it releases. When Lego Marvel Super Heroes launches on October 22, 2013 for every current-gen system with the PS4 and Xbox One version following in November, you won’t need a demo to tell you that this will be a game you’ll want to play.

Briefly: The base game isn’t even out yet, but Ubisoft today announced some very neat single-player DLC for their upcoming Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag.

The DLC is called Freedom Cry, and tells the story of born slave Adewale. Adewale eventually found freedom as a pirate aboard the Jackdaw, where he became Edward Kenway’s second-in-command. Now, 15 years later, Adewale has become a trained Assassin who finds himself shipwrecked in Saint-Domingue without weapons or crew. He starts to meet locals in an effort to assemble a crew and steal a ship. The more he helps, however, the more he is drawn into the Maroon slave community. Forced to face his past, Adewale sets out to free the slaves and bring death to their captors.

Sounds neat, huh? Freedom Cry brings an entirely new single-player story to the already expansive game. Take a look at the first trailer for the DLC below, and let us know if you’ll be picking it up!

Briefly: So it’s not an announcement about the much anticipated DLC for The Last of Us, but at least it lets us know when that announcement will be.

Naughty Dog’s Bruce Strayley posted to his twitter today that a reveal is coming this week. No word (of course) on what type of DLC will be announced, but I’m sure that anything will be welcome, as we’re all itching to jump back into this world.

Take a look at the embedded tweet below, and let us know how much you loved the game!

Tuesday is upon us, and so are the newest PSN releases! Take a look below at everything hitting PSN today, and be sure to let us know what you’re planning to pick up! Sure, we already know it’s Grand Theft Auto V, but Hot Wheels: World’s Best Driver is looking pretty sweet too!

Briefly: Ubisoft has just released a cool 14-minute gameplay video for what may just be my most anticipated game of the year, Watch Dogs.

The video gives us a neat sneak peek into some of the awesome multiplayer action that Watch Dogs has in store for us. I was mainly looking forward to the game’s single-player campaign, but the multiplayer here looks seriously awesome.

Take a look at the new video below, and let us know if you’ll be picking up the game! You’ll get your chance to take over Chicago on November 19th. Watch Dogs is set for release on PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Wii U, and PC.

In Watch_Dogs, players will assume the role of Aiden Pearce, a new type of vigilante who, with the help of his smartphone, will use his ability to hack into Chicago’s central operating system (ctOS) and control almost every element of the city. Aiden will be able to tap into the city’s omnipresent security cameras, download personal information to locate a target, control systems such as traffic lights or public transportation to stop a chase, and more. The city of Chicago is now the ultimate weapon.

Briefly: We’re finally just a few weeks away from the release of Rockstar’s highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto V, and the developer has just debuted the official trailer for the game.

In the short (just one minute long) video, we get to see plenty of Los Santos (which looks pretty gorgeous), plenty of explosions, and we also learn just what brought our three protagonists together again. It’s a great trailer, though I don’t know if I could even be more excited for the game at this point.

Take a look at the trailer below, and let us know which console you’ll be picking up the game on! Grand Theft Auto V hits stores on September 17th!

Is it October yet? With just two months between us and the release of Battlefield 4, the crew over at DICE are keeping the teases coming. In the most recent developer video, Aleksander Grondal walks us through a huge feature of the BF4 multiplayer experience. Levolution, sounds stupid, looks incredible.

The want factor just flew off the charts. I hope that these features of map changing moments aren’t just some scripted gimmicks.

You can get your copy of Battlefield 4 on October 29th on PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.

Briefly: Here it is folks.

That’s right, it’s Thursday morning, and Rockstar has just (finally) debuted the first multiplayer footage from Grand Theft Auto V.

We’ve all been very curious to learn just what Grand Theft Auto V‘s multiplayer component would bring to the table, and that time is finally here. Take a look at the multiplayer first-look below, and let us know just how excited you are!

Grand Theft Auto V hits PS3 and Xbox 360 on September 17th.

Amazing, right?

The next iteration of the CoD franchise, CoD: Ghosts, is just a few months from release. The developers certainly are making a big deal out of this one. The game features real time lighting and advanced fish AI. We all know that the main draw of the game is the online multiplayer, and the guys over at Activision have just released this fancy new trailer.

Now, admittedly I went into this trailer thinking it was going to be the same old shit. But after watching I was pleasantly surprised. It looks like the team over at Infinity Ward is really trying to make the proper next step for their game. The new game modes look really fun, and the Battlefield style destruction should add a new variable to the hectic run and gun. But we all know what the best part of this trailer is, you get to play as a GIRL!

GoD: Ghosts ships out November 5th on PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Wii U and PC.

Saints Row: The Third proved that when the core essence of a game is built upon having fun doing some pretty goofy things, people will love it. When Deep Silver took over Volition when THQ went bankrupt, everyone worried that the Saints Row franchise would never be the same. Saints Row IV will silence those doubts with nothing more than a smile.

saints row 4

Saints Row IV has a story premise that can be considered a throwaway when you first see it. War Vet running for and eventually winning the role of President of the United States only to deal with an alien invasion. Trapped inside a simulated world on the alien mothership, you and the rest of The Saints must fight their way from the inside to save the world. What Volition does within this premise is nothing short of awe-inspiring goodness. There are so many little things scattered throughout that keep the momentum going. It’s hard to talk about anything without spoiling everything but one thing’s for sure, there are a lot references and call backs. If you didn’t play Saints Row: The Third, most of the call backs to previous story elements will be easily overlooked.

saints row 4

The sheer amount of references are astounding. From Harry Potter to Metal Gear, it’s like there is a holy grail of references that was lost to the ages that Deep Silver Volition finally uncovered. The biggest surprise is made for the fans of a cult classic movie in the late 80’s. I had to pause the game from my sheer excitement after the reveal late in the campaign. It made me wish I still had a pair of Ray-Bans.

Saints Row IV has also mashed up bits and pieces from other franchises in its gameplay mechanics. Using the core of Saints Row: The Third, adding abilities such as super speed, super jump, air dashing, gliding and even a dive move that when executed from a certain height, the impact will cause a nuclear explosion. How can you not use that all the time, every time?

saints row 4

When it’s time to stand your ground and fight, you’ll have a set of other powers to utilize. At first, it seems like just four different powers at your disposal. Once you level up more, you’ll see these powers expand into a multitude of uses. Freeze Blast now adds fire and mind control augmentations. Telekinesis with lightning or life steal is now possible. Ground Stomp aliens to shrink them down to nothing? Got that too. For the guns blazing fans, Buff is there to augment your bullets with fire, lightning and frost.

saints row 4

I found myself using Freeze Blast the most. The rhythm of freezing a group of enemies, switching to a rocket launcher and watching them explode in an icy death was too effective not to use all the time. Using special weapons such as the dubstep gun were fun to use a couple of times but never felt effective enough to get the job done. Most of the weapons will feel weak in the beginning so you’re going to spend some time earning enough cache to purchase upgrades at the Friendly Fire before you feel like your weapons are worthy enough for a Saint to hold.

Saints Row IV included my weakness for collecting glowing objects. With Crackdown being influential to adding these luminescent collectibles, I couldn’t help but move towards their direction whenever a glimpse of one was in sight. The more of these you nab, the more upgrades you can unlock for your powers. Fully upgraded jump, run speed, air dash and glide make exploring simulated Steelport a joyous venture.

saints row 4

All this leads into how pointless vehicles may seem. Even with the ease of adding vehicles to your virtual garage and simply placing a phone call to instantly retrieve said vehicles can’t compare to zipping around town on your feet. Who wants to be tied down to a slow ass tank when you are the tank?

Probably the most loveable thing about Saints Row IV for me is the audio. Whether it’s the stellar voice acting or the bevy of musical choices with the in-game radio, you’re auditory senses will revel in glee. Every line spoken in the game may not be a winner. That is easily overshadowed by the delivery of all the lines by every voice actor. Nolan North as a voice option for character creation just screams, “PICK ME! PICK ME!” I was hoping for a little more Nolan North making self references. At least he sounds like he is having fun with the lines, like everyone else seemed to be.

The music choices this time around on the radio stations are an eclectic mix of new and old, timeless classics. I found myself drawn to two stations for my radio needs; Mad Decent and Mix 107.7. Mad Decent has features a strange mix of artists I’d never heard of but also, Riff Raff. Having him as the DJ is pretty brilliant. Not as witty as previous DJs in Saints Row: The Third, but the ridiculousness of his persona is engaging in a way it shouldn’t be. Mix 107.7 is all the great songs the past that make you go, “I remember that song!” as you start to sing along with the track immediately after.

Biggest addition to the music in the game is that you can take it with you wherever you are, regardless if you are in a vehicle or not. This new addition brings so much value when doing anything in Saints Row IV. Moments such as blowing up a city block with “B.O.B.” by Outkast as your theme makes causing mayhem that much more fun in Steelport.

saints row 4

Volition continues the incredible usage of licensed music at key moments in their games with Saints Row IV. From Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” playing in the first ten minutes of the game to the end credits, you’ll be remissed if you don’t give the dev team that worked on the placement of these songs big praise. Even when they go back to the well from previous ideas in Saints Row: The Third, it still works to put a smile on my face.

Smiles across the board is what you’ll get when playing Saints Row IV. With the exception of a bland boss fight near the end of the game and some repetitiveness in the side quests, I couldn’t stop smiling. I imagine the team at Deep Silver Volition will be smiling as well knowing that their main goal was achieved; an insane amount of fun.

Score: 5/5

Briefly: Nope, it’s not a video of GTA V’s highly anticipated multiplayer mode (that’s coming Thursday), but it’s still pretty damn cool.

Rockstar today overhauled the official Grand Theft Auto website with a Los Santos / Blaine County travelogue. The new site features plenty of new screenshots, and also goes in-depth on some of the things you’ll be able to do in the game.

The site is absolutely full of info, and I’d implore you to check it out if you’re excited for the game. Take a look at a plethora of new screenshots below, and let us know what you think! Grand Theft Auto V hits theatres on September 17th!

Bah, this looks INCREDIBLE!

Briefly: We’ve all been very curious to learn just what Grand Theft Auto V‘s multiplayer component would bring to the table, and it looks like we won’t be waiting much longer.

Rockstar’s official blog has just revealed that the first Online gameplay trailers and previews will hit the web this Thursday, August 15th.

We’ll be sure to share the videos as soon as they’re available! Let us know if you’re excited!

GTAONLINE_THURS-AUG-15_640x640

To say that the downloadable characters released for Injustice: Gods Among Us were contentious would be an understatement. After a generally well received announcement of Lobo, the releases of Batgirl, Mortal Kombat’s Scorpion and Man of Steel villain Zod divided the community amongst people who felt more Batman and Superman characters was overkill, along with a guest character taking a slot in what many assumed was a DC exclusive fighter. But most of all, some were mad because there were still vital pieces of the DC Universe missing, especially Justice League mainstay Martian Manhunter. At EVO, NetherRealm Studios showed they were listening, answering the fan’s request and adding Manhunter to the Injustice cast along with an extra surprise.

The reveal trailer showed Manhunter going against John Stewart’s Green Lantern, displaying some impressive use of his shape shifting and telepathic abilities. Stewart on the other hand, is a new skin for the Hal Jordan version in the standard game, so while his moves are the same, it sounds like the developers were able to secure the Justice League Unlimited voice actor from the animated series for both. It would have been nice to see some new constructs, but then again, I’m happy that Stewart is in at all. Completing the Justice League animated cast on top of a brand new character is better than expected.

Injustice Zatanna

Will Zatanna make the DLC cut?

But the good news doesn’t stop there. Ed Boon recently tweeted that MM and Stewart won’t be the final additions, stating that the next one is a, “BIG fan favorite request!” What this means is anyone’s guess, but the character request polls were led by Zatanna and Red Hood. Considering the backlash towards more Batman characters, I’m guessing Zatanna is getting in. While I personally would be happy with Hood, (or Black Canary and Huntress for that matter,) Zatanna would be a great addition to a roster with a lack of magic users save for Raven.

The moral of the story? Don’t buy season passes!

Martian Manhunter and John Stewart will be available on July 30th for $4.99. Whether or not a second season pass for the new wave of fighters, who the next character will be, and how many characters will be added from here is unknown, but details will be posted as they become available.

Disgaea has an incredible amount of longevity. After the original on the PS2 received a huge cult following, leading to many disappointed late adopters who could only get their hands on one of the few copies released through inflated ebay auctions, the game received a huge reprint. As the old saying goes, the rest was history. Becoming a huge runaway success, the series has become one of the most popular strategy RPGs on the market, accompanied by multiple remakes, sequels and spinoffs.

2013 marks the 10 year anniversary of the original, and what better way to celebrate it than to revisit the original cast? Laharl, Flonne, Etna and her army of Prinnies are back in Disgaea D2, the first direct sequel in the franchise. Now that Laharl has successfully become the overlord of the Netherworld, what challenges will face him and his crew? Whatever they are, if the previous games are any indication, they’re sure to be charming, quirky and laugh out loud hilarious along the way.

I got the chance to try the game out, so stay tuned for my hands on impressions, Until then, check out the newest trailer for Disgaea D2 and keep an eye out for its release, exclusive to the Playstation 3, this fall.

About Disgaea D2: A Brighter Darkness:
The Netherworld — a place where might makes right and today’s friends are tomorrow’s enemies. After a long journey with many ups and downs, Laharl finally finds himself as a full-fledged Overlord. However, the other denizens of the Netherworld do not see him as such, so he sets out on a journey with his loyal(!?) vassals to receive the respect he deserves. Along the way, Laharl will meet a girl who claims to be his sister, demons with bigger than usual chips on their shoulders, and find out that even his own body holds a few surprises for him…

At Comic Con, Capcom announced that they were digging up one of their classic side scrolling platformer franchises in a much anticipated return. Before you get too excited, no, it’s not Mega Man. BUT… when Strider is the game in question, it’s hard to be disappointed.

Debuting in 1989 as an arcade game that was praised for its innovation while being infamous for its difficulty, Strider was one of Capcom’s early successes, but would fade into obscurity until the ninja bad ass rose to prominence in Marvel vs Capcom. His new found fame was quickly followed by an arcade and Playstation sequel that received a very limited run, but nothing else came out of the character’s revival. Fast forward 12 years, and suddenly he’s once again heavily featured in Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, leading us to this announcement. Hmm, I sense a pattern.

With developer Double Helix at the helm, (of Silent Hill: Homecoming fame and the same guys behind the upcoming Killer Instinct,) Strider looks to be coming along nicely. Promising a Metroidvania style world to explore, plenty of action and top of the line platforming, I’m excited to see the series make its return.

Check out the trailer and let us know what you think!

Recipe for the most fun you’ll ever have this year:

1 cup of the 1992 movie, Stay Tuned
1/2  cup Crackdown
A dash of Saints Row: The Third
Add a pinch of Keith David, Benjamin King (Only use the muthafuckin’ kind, the other brand has less flava), and Nolan North.
Mix well in a blender with ice.

Finished product should be the best funtini you’ve ever tasted in your life.

Let’s break down this one of a kind recipe, shall we?

1 cup of the movie, Stay Tuned

Many of you are too young to have seen this fine motion picture starring John Ritter. The synopsis of Stay Tuneda husband and wife get sucked into TV land and try to survive all the 100+ channels of programming in order to escape. Saints Row IV approaches this theme with the way it seamlessly cuts from each scenario. From playing a super soldier that saves the world while Aerosmith’s “Don’t Wanna Miss a Thing” plays, to fulfilling your Presidential role of abolishing cancer and bringing the fist of justice to the low road of filibusters. When Saints Row IV switches from Leave it to Beaver land to the virtual reality trap the alien race Zin and its leader Zinyak has the Saints in, that’s when the fun factor really picks up.

1/2 cup of Crackdown

Saints Row 4

Crackdown is one of my favorite titles for the Xbox 360. Realtime Worlds really crafted the perfect playground of superhuman-like abilities in an open environment. Jumping 30 feet in the air, running faster than any car, and throwing any car that tried to be faster than you gave me the first taste of what true freedom in having fun was like.

Saints Row IV provides nostalgia for those feelings by letting you play like kid in a candy factory with absolutely no rules. Collecting bits of data to upgrade powers such as super jump, super speed, gliding makes me wonder if Crackdown was part of the design document for Saints Row IV. Beating the Wardens, the super soldiers Zinyak has placed in the virtual reality you are trapped in, grants you special abilities to augment the already exuberant fun factor with the other powers. Freezing the aliens which in turn lets me do double damage for a brief period of time is a great way to deal with a groups of enemies. The one things I would want to make things a little more sweeter is being able to shoot while jumping. In Crackdown, raining hell down unsuspecting fools with rockets while free falling never, ever gets old.

A dash of Saints Row: The Third

When Volition decided to stop being serious with the Saints Row franchise and just said, “Fuck it. Let’s see how much dumb shit we can get away with.”, what the world was blessed with was Saints Row: The Third. The humor that was put into Saints Row: The Third was in short, brilliant. If you weren’t laughing, smiling or down right having the best time in an 3rd-person open world game, you had no soul. From the auto-tuned pimp, Zimos, the homage to cheesy action flicks, great voice work and dialogue, perfect use of licensed songs in key moments, Saints Row: The Third was like the perfect storm for fun. You can’t tell me Sublime’s “What I Got” scene wasn’t an amazing moment when you first saw it.

Saints Row IV brings all those things that made Saints Row: The Third great, along for the ride. From what I’ve played of the preview build, Volition knew the exact vibe to carry over into Saints Row IV without going too far into making a parody of itself. If you’re worrying about how Saints Row IV was built around what was suppose to be a standalone expansion for Saints Row:The Third when THQ owned the IP, rest assured that enough care went into changing Enter the Dominatrix that the full game flavor is fresh.

Add a pinch of Keith David, Benjamin King and Nolan North

Saints Row 4

Nothing pleases the earhole pallets quite like Keith David’s voice. Have a listen for yourself:

Having Keith David play himself as the the Vice President of the United States was a genius move on Volition’s part. Something about that commanding voice of his that could get me to do anything, I mean ANYTHING. Benjamin “Muthafuckin” King. Since Terry Crews is taking over for the late Michael Clark Duncan, I see more outlandish dialogue being said. If Volition was smart, they would throw an Old Spice reference in there for us all.

Now we come to what took up the majority of my time in the preview build of Saints Row IV, Nolan North. Whoever made the call to insert Nolan North as a voice option in the character creation menus, I want to say “I love you”. I must have cycled through all the taunts and compliments that you can pick for your created character five times. There is a specific part in the preview that Kenzi asks you to “just be yourself”. Of course the correct response would be, “you mean Nolan North?” I think I snorted from the laughter from that one line. It shouldn’t have been that funny, but I was riding the high from the start of Saints Row IV and it felt it was never going to stop.

I know that in the future, people will find ways to make this recipe even better than the original. Until that far flung future happens, I suggest you get a taste of Saints Row IV when it releases on August 20 later this year.

It’s been rumoured for some time, but it just became official: a newproper Ratchet and Clank title is in the works over at Insomniac.

Titled Ratchet and Clank: Into the Nexus, the PS3 exclusive will retail for $29.99, and hit stores (and PSN) this holiday season. Into the Nexus is a single player return to form for Ratchet and Clank, which should be very welcome after the last few (mediocre) multiplayer offerings.

Take a look at the game’s first trailer below, and let us know how excited you are to return to the world of Ratchet and Clank! I wonder if the PS4 will release before this game hits shelves?

Here it is, folks.

Long awaited, and now just a few months away from release, Rockstar Games has just debuted the first phenomenal gameplay footage from Grand Theft Auto V. We all pretty much knew what we’d be looking at here, but damn does it look good.

I won’t waste any of your time describing the preview, as this just dropped seconds ago. Watch the footage below, and let us know how freaking excited you are! Grand Theft Auto V hits PS3 and Xbox 360 on September 17th!

Briefly: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is looking pretty awesome at this point, and today we learned just when we’ll be able to play it.

Microsoft’s Major Nelson has announced the official release date for the Xbox version of the title. The game will be available for download on August 28th, and will cost you a cool 1200 Microsoft Points (~$15). The PS3 and Steam versions of the title are expected to release around the same date.

I’m actually really excited for the game to come out. It’s been too many years since we’ve played a decent Turtles game, and from the trailers that we’ve seen so far, Out of the Shadows looks to feature some fantastic gameplay. Let us know if you’re planning to download when it hits the console of your choice!

I’ll be damned. This game looks to be coming together very nicely.

Viacom has unveiled a new character trailer for the upcoming downloadable title, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows. The game is set to release for PS3, Xbox 360, and PC in August, and is based on the original Turtles comics, rather than any of the recent television adaptations.

The game looks much darker than any of the mediocre Turtles’ games from the past few years, and the gameplay looks very solid. Arguably, we haven’t had a great TMNT game since the Super Nintendo days, so Out of the Shadows could be a welcome change to that trend.

Take a look at Leondardo’s trailer below, and let us know if you’re looking forward to the game!

Over at the official PlayStation Blog, Community Manager Paul Sullivan states that PSN will undergo maintenance this Tuesday, June 25th.

From 9:30AM PT (10:30AM MT / 11:30AM CT / 12:30 PM ET) until 4:00PM PT (5:00PM MT / 6:00PM CT / 7:00PM ET), PSN will be inaccessible. Good news is if you sign into PSN from now until before the maintenance starts, you’ll still be able to access online gaming as well as apps like Netflix.

It’s not explained in the blog post if you have to remain signed in to PSN in order to access online play and apps so to be on the safe side, I would suggest signing in a little before start time and stay signed in if you want to do anything during the maintenance period.

Since the PS3 4.45 firmware fiasco last week, this could also be Sony prepping for the fix being released on June 27th.

When gamers think of Vanillaware, most would associate the developer with some of the most beautiful 2D side scrollers of the last half decade. Both Odin Sphere and Muramasa proved that in a gaming industry dominated by 3D and HD, side scrollers could offer deep, challenging combat while still looking pretty. Their newest title, Dragon’s Crown is aiming to keep this tradition intact, and if my time with the game on the E3 show floor is any indication, this beat em up is well on its way of doing just that.

Dragon's Crown Screen 1

Dragon’s Crown lets players choose from one of six warriors, each one fitting different fantasy archtypes. Want a armored clad knight? You got it. A magic wielding sorceress? Yep, she’s here too. Personally, I wanted the Elf, complete with bow and arrow. Each character is accompanied by up to two support characters that aid players in battle in different ways. For example, the theif was able to snatch items from enemies and add them to your pool. If this isn’t enough, the game will feature 2 player co op if you want to dungeon crawl with a friend.
While playing throught the demo, I definitely got a strong Golden Axe vibe from the mechanics. My archer had two main attacks, using her bow for long range or close range melee attacks. Beating up seemingly endless amounts of enemies was fun, but what was even better was learning that I could steal enemy mounts and use them to my advantage. Finishing each fight rewarded me with a rank, telling me how well I did at finding the treasure in the room.

Dragon's Crown Screen 2

Outside of dungeons, a multi-tiered town can be explored to upgrade equipment, sell treasure and chat with non playable characters. True to Vanillaware form, both the towns and the dungeons were some of the most gorgeous looking environments out there. Judging from the hints picked up from this demo, you’ll get to enjoy the in game artwork more and more, because there’s bound to be tons of items and skills to collect. With six unique characters to do so with, local and online multiplayer and plenty of hidden items, Dragon’s Crown is looking like a game that will be worth exploring over and over again.

I’d be hard pressed to think of a time that a 2D beat em up was one of the most anticipated games of the year, but Dragon’s Crown easily fits that mold for me. The demo alone had tons of secrets, rewarding combat, a variety of playable characters and a varied upgrade system. Just thinking about how much farther the final game can take these ideas makes the approaching release date that much more anticipated. Great gameplay, beautiful graphics, challenging AI and the option to tackle all of this with a friend? What more can you ask for?

Retro, beat em up and modern gamers would do well to keep an eye out for Dragon’s Crown, which is coming to the PS3 and PS Vita on August 6th

While touring the games on display at E3 this year was as exciting as always, it’s getting apparent that new ideas are getting fewer and far between. Which is why when something new does stand out, it makes it that much more exciting to try it out. One such moment was when I came across Time and Eternity, an RPG that takes a unique battle system and combines it with a creative visual presentation, essentially putting an anime in the hands of the gamer. Creativity? Anime? RPG? What other reasons did I need to see what this game was all about? I literally went into this demo with zero knowledge, having missed all of the information released on the game, so I was excited to find out what I could.

For a bright and cheery looking game, Time and Eternity starts on a point that can be called the lowest of the low. Moments before her wedding, Princess Toki and her husband to be are ambushed by assassins. Toki makes it out okay, but her fiance isn’t so lucky and is killed in the fight. As it turns out, the princess has another side to her. This traumatic event awakens Towa, a second soul that Toki houses. Joined by their pet dragon who now houses their fiance’s soul, the two set out to find out who attacked them and perhaps use time to prevent the murder altogether.

Time and Eternity Screen 1

Just looking at Time and Eternity makes it come off as an anime instead of a game. Giving a vibe reminiscent of Dragon’s Lair, the visuals look like something you would be watching instead of controlling. This just goes to show how gorgeous the game looks in motion, which can be seen in the game’s newest trailer, (hint: check the bottom of the page!)

Random battles trigger while running along the map, starting one on one battles that play out in real time, but not in the way one would expect. Mixing real time with turn based, the girls are set in one spot, but can dodge, block, move forward or backwards and attack at will. Toki and Towa have a variety of stances and positions they can take by attacking the enemy up close or shooting from afar. Each girl specializes in different attacks, complete with their own stats and skills. After each level up, the girl you play as switches, but there are items that open up later on that lets players switch them at will.

Time and Eternity Screen 3

If enemies get too close for comfort, they can be kicked back to create distance, which seemed like the best option since long range magic trumped physical damage in every way. Different enemies are said to have different vulnerabilities, but everyone in the demo went down with one spell as opposed to multiple rapid fire melee attacks, making physical combat useless. The difference is that Magic takes energy that must be recharged by dodging, blocking and attacking, so melee being unlimited makes it a strong tool when there’s no other choice.

Outside of battle, the game seems to have a large cast of non playable characters that Toki and Towa can interact with. Mostly voiced, (but all in Japanese in this demo,) conversations would serve to flesh out personalities and build relationships. Dating sim elements seem to play a role in how these friendships develop, which might play a bigger role than they seem. According to the information I was able to gather, Time and Eternity will have multiple endings, potentially making the would be husband to choose between Toki and Towa permanently. From being killed to living in a dragon AND having to choose between girls? Sounds like the worst day ever.

Walking away from Time and Eternity left me excited for what the full version will offer. Its unique battle system and stylish graphics are just a tease for the potentially robust features the demo teased. Having two party members in one person is a unique idea, and I’m anxious to see how far the “dating” elements take the story. My biggest concern is how overpowered magic was compared to melee combat, but considering I was just playing one area, the main game will have a much larger variety of enemies to test these battle skills on. After being caught completely off guard, I must say that it’ll feel like an eternity until I can finally get this game in my hands.

Time and Eternity is coming to the PS3 on July 16th.

Just yesterday, Sound Works Collection debuted a fantastic Man of Steel featurette focussed entirely on the film’s amazing sound design. Today, they’ve done the same thing with June 14th’s other majour release, Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us.

The game is selling like hot cakes, and for good reason: this is possibly one of the most intense, frightening, and beautiful gaming experiences ever crafted. From graphics, to gameplay, and of course, sound, The Last of Us is a masterpiece by all counts.

The video features Game Director Bruce Straley, Creative Director Neil Druckmann, Senior Sound Designer Derrick Espino, Audio Lead Phillip Kovats, Senior Audio Programmer Jonathan Lanier, and Music Manager, Jonathan Mayer, and is a must-watch for anyone that’s interested in the game.

Watch the featurette below, and be sure to let us know what you think of the game!

Square Enix had no shortage of Final Fantasy news on the show floor at E3. Between the rebirth of the MMO, A Realm Reborn: Final Fantasy XIV and the official announcement of Final Fantasy XV, fans of the franchise had plenty to sink their teeth into. With that said, this doesn’t mean the next game in the series didn’t hog a share of the spotlight for itself. Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII was on the floor and fully playable, so I made sure I got to delve deep into the Goddess’ final adventure.

The demo threw Lightning into a very different version of her world; one that is on the verge of destruction. As the E3 trailer showed, she’s at odds with her former teammate, Snow, and was forced to fight through waves of enemies in order to keep up with him. With tactical assistance from everyone’s favorite whiny brat turned Otakon wannabe, Hope, the trailing of Snow had commenced!

Lightning Returns Screen 1

Lightning Returns touts a real time battle system that is more action based, but this was the first time I was able to put it to the test. Familiar aspects return, including a renamed version of the paradigm shift/job systems and the Active Time Battle mechanic, but with a new twist. Since Lightning is riding solo in this adventure, her skill set has expanded substantially. Split amongst three battle types, (with different costumes to match,) Lightning can switch between them on the fly. Having three attack options and a guard button, players can manually make her move towards and away from the enemy while timing defending, magic and physical moves. Each move spends a certain amount of the ATB bar, and once it’s empty, you’ll have to wait for it to recharge. However, instead of other games in the series where you were forced to twiddle your thumbs while waiting for the bar to fill, each class has its own ATB bar. So all it takes is a simple press of the shoulder button to switch to another style while the drained one charges in the background. That’s pretty sweet if you ask me.

One of the most strategic aspects of the XIII series was the staggering system, where timing attacks and exploiting weaknesses caused enemies to be temporarily disabled in various ways. I’m happy to say that staggering is back, but it works differently this time around. While elemental weaknesses still play a part, it’s not enough to just level enemies with constant attacks. The best way to stagger now is to attack during an enemy’s attack animation, so while you risk taking damage, you’ll be rewarded with a window of opportunity to inflict a huge amount of uninterrupted damage if you’ve managed your ATB bar properly. And trust me, to efficiently beat the boss at the close of the demo, you were going to have to take advantage of any exploit you could.

Lightning Returns Screen 2

I’ll admit, I’ve been a big critic of the XIII franchise. After being greatly disappointed by the original and its sequel, which took plenty of steps in the right direction, but still fell short in the game play department in my opinion, Lightning Returns is well on its way to change my mind. Controlling only one character eliminates the party member AI issues and the updates to the battle system fit in perfectly with the real time combat. The only big issues that have yet to be resolved are with the story and characters, but we won’t really know much about either until the game releases early next year. I can also do without the completely out of character “sexy” posing the stoic and serious Lightning does after winning a battle in her magic costume, but that’s a conversation for another day.

Look for Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII on Xbox 360 and PS3 on February 11th.

I’m beyond excited for this one.

Sure, Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD is a high definition remake of games that are over a decade old, but I was just 11 years old when Final Fantasy X released, and for some reason never completed the title. Now I’m older, more patient, and I’ve forgotten what the game’s about, so it’s the perfect time to be reintroduced to it.

Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD will launch on PS3 and PS Vita later this year. PS3 users will get both games on one Blu-Ray, while Vita players will need to purchase each game separately. Square-Enix just revealed a new trailer for the compilation at this year’s E3 conference, so take a look below, and let us know if you’re excited!

Now that I’m older, I bet I can kick some butt at Blitzball.

E3 is ruined.

We all patiently watched Sony’s E3 press conference on Monday with the hope that after years of silence, we’d finally hear new details on Team Ico’s follow-up to the incredible Shadow of the Colossus, The Last Guardian. The game was first announced with a breathtaking teaser video back in 2009, and has scarcely been mentioned since.

No new details came during the conference, but in an interview with GameTrailers, Sony’s Jack Tretton confirmed the disappointing truth that we won’t be seeing The Last Guardian any time soon. Tretton stated: “I think the cool thing about our worldwide development studios is we have so many projects out there from so many great teams. Projects never ultimately go away, so The Last Guardian has certainly not gone away, but it’s on hiatus right now.”

There you have it. If you were still hoping we’d see something from the title at E3, or any time later this year, you can put those hopes to rest. Rewatch The Last Guardian‘s debut trailer below, and let us know how you feel about the news.

Update: Kotaku has more information from Shuhei Yoshida, head of Sony Worldwide Studios. Yoshida has issued an update to Tretton’s statement, lettings us all know that “The game is in active development. [Lead designer Fumito] Ueda-san shared updates a few months ago. Nothing has changed. My answer is, ‘Yes, the game is in active development.’ It’s not hiatus at all. But we are not ready to reintroduce it. When we are ready, we will do that. Please wait.”

I’ll believe it when I see it. What do you think?

Even if you’re planning to immediately upgrading to a PS4 or Xbox One upon release, Rockstar is giving us one very good reason to hold onto our old consoles. Grand Theft Auto V hits stores less than two months before Sony and Microsoft release their next generation of consoles.

Rockstar isn’t at E3 this year, so I’m guessing we won’t be seeing any new footage this week. The developer has, however, released a batch of sexy new screenshots. Even if it isn’t next-gen, this game is pretty.

Take a look at the new images below, and be sure to let us know how excited you are! Grand Theft Auto V releases on September 17th!
