Briefly: According to a post on the Office for Harmonization in the Internal Markets site, Bethesda has trademarked the name Fallout 4 in Europe.

The website, which is part of the official trademark office of the European Union, has revealed that Bethesda Softworks LLC has officially filed to trademark the Fallout 4 name on November 14, 2013. The game is rumored to take place in Boston, Massachusetts, although that is probably far from being officially confirmed.

At any rate, fans of the Fallout series should be thrilled! As someone who has logged countless hours in on Fallout: New Vegas, I am looking forward to any more announcements that will be made about the game! We’ll be sure to share anything else that we hear.

Where would you like the game to be set. More importantly: did you prefer Fallout 3 or New Vegas?

Probably not official art... but maybe.

Ever wonder how the Empire built the Death Star? Well luckily Disney’s free game Tiny Death Star has the answer!

images

A collaboration between LucasFilm and Tiny Towers developer NimbleBit, this is the first Star Wars game Disney has made since acquiring LucasFilm in 2012. The game plays a lot like Tiny Towers, yet with a Star Wars twist. Help the Empire build the Death Star by making an array of businesses to generate money for the space station. Filled with adorable, pixelated versions of Star Wars characters and lots of witty jokes, the game is cute and addicting. And judging by the fact that I haven’t been able to put this game down all day, I’d say Disney is off to a pretty great start!

Apps are quickly becoming a huge staple of the gaming industry. With more and more apps breaking away from mobile devices and finding their way onto consoles, app developers have a lot of importance on the future of the gaming industry. Being intrigued by this, I decided to contact an app company for an interview to better understand how apps are made and how they will affect gaming in the future. I chose to get in touch with Metaversal Studios. Being a company that continuously creates popular, witty games for both iOS and Android, they seemed like a good choice. Matt Sughrue, VP of Product Development, was nice enough to give me his time to answer a few questions.

Geekscape: So, Matt, tell me about yourself.

Matt Sughrue: I started working in the game industry in 1992. Prior to that I worked in marketing and advertising in the computer business, but I’ve been a gamer since there were games to play and wanted very badly to make games. When I saw an ad in the Boston Globe for a game designer position at a small developer called Animation Magic, I went for it. I had zero qualifications other than good writing skills, boundless enthusiasm and rugged good looks. They hired me anyway, although it was as Marketing Director, not designer. I spent six months in that role before moving into design. Since we were so small (half a dozen developers in Boston), all of our roles overlapped and I was able to learn the ins and outs of game development by actually doing the work.

http://youtu.be/gcJPfb1GI3U

I loved being a designer and made a half dozen PC games, mostly for kids, during my first few years at the company. Animation Magic grew considerably during my time there, up to about a dozen people in Boston and 150 artists and animators at our studio in St. Petersburg, Russia. I had the opportunity to travel to Russia many times over the next 8 years and work with some extraordinarily talented people there.

As we grew, we had a need for someone to manage the client relationships and fill the producer role, so I shifted gears and became first a producer, then production director, then executive producer for the company. By the time we were purchased by Davidson & Associates (who had also purchased Sierra Online and Blizzard around the same time), our studio was developing multiple titles for multiple clients non-stop. It was kind of crazy, but I learned a lot about implementing best practices, juggling priorities and the importance of good planning.

After Animation Magic, I served as General Manager for Papyrus Design Group, the top PC racing simulation developer at the time, then went a social MMO startup that never got off the ground due to a lack of funding.

Over the next ten years I worked for developers and publishers running projects, teams and business units making games across just about every platform, from GBA to PS3.

I joined Metaversal Studios in 2010 as VP of Product Development, and have been here ever since.

Geekscape: Impressive! Could you tell me about Metaversal Studios?

Matt Sughrue: Metaversal started as a group of Northeastern University graduates making Flash games for fun and for web clients. When Apple launched the iPod and iPhone, Metaversal started making games for those devices. The founder of the company sold Metaversal to a New York-based game distributor called Alliance in 2009, and Alliance hired me in 2010 to run the studio. When I came on board I discovered a lot of raw talent and potential but no discipline or structure. There was no one who could tell the new owners of the company when a game would be done or how it would generate any revenues.

I applied the best practices I had learned over the years to the studio and the development team jumped on board without hesitation. They quickly understood the value of good design documentation, source control, bug ticketing, peer review and clearly defined milestones, and we had our first successful app (a novelty app called Shave Me) in April of that year. Shave Me went to the top of the charts and continues to stay strong 3 years later, with well over 8 million downloads and many, many updates and enhancements. We’ve developed many other games since then for both iOS and Android devices, and along with our parent company have recently become PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo developers and publishers.

http://youtu.be/kxvKeAQg0Zc

Geekscape: I downloaded Shave Me and it is honestly one of the most unique apps I’ve ever used. How did Metaversal come up with that idea?

Matt Sughrue: It was the winner in a “weirdest app idea” studio competition. Weird can work in the App Store!

Geekscape: I guess it can! So, what are you working on now?

Matt Sughrue: Can’t give you details on that since we haven’t announced it yet, but we’re building a new iOS and Android game, as well as working with other developers to publish their titles for iOS, PS4 and Xbox One.

Geekscape: I’ll keep a lookout for it! So how many people work at Metaversal and what are the different responsibilities that they have?

Matt Sughrue: We have seven people here in our Massachusetts office, and our parent company has offices in New York, Miami and San Francisco.

Here in our studio we have design, art, engineering, marketing and project management staff. We’re all gamers, and the chemistry between our devs is excellent. Most of the team are people whom I’ve worked with at other jobs in the past, so there is a level of trust and efficiency that lets us achieve a lot more than developers our size normally would be able to pull off.

elemites

Geekscape: Will any of your current apps be available on consoles?

Matt Sughrue: Probably nothing that’s already in the market, but we are looking at consoles for everything we do going forward.

Geekscape: So what goes into creating an app?

Matt Sughrue: App development is very different from making console games in that you have a very short dev cycle (1-4 months, depending on the game) and a very small team. We start with a group brainstorm session to get some potential ideas down on the board, then pare the list down by asking things like “Does this have staying power and can it be the start of a line of games?” “Can we bring this to other platforms easily?” “Does this take advantage of the development pipeline we’ve created, or do we need to change our process to make it?” “Can it be done in X months?” And on and on until the strongest idea remains. Everyone is thick-skinned here, which is good because we are also all extremely blunt with each other about the viability of a game concept.

http://youtu.be/Agt1cbPCa50

Geekscape: Finally- what platforms do you make apps for?

Matt Sughrue: We make games for iOS, Android, PC/Mac, and now PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo.

On November 17th, Nintendo’s Wii Mini will be available for purchase in America.

The Wii Mini is a more affordable version of Nintendo’s popular Wii console, with the opening price at a cool $99.99. The system is a smaller, redesigned version of the orignal Wii. It will come with a red Wii Remote Plus controller and nunchuck, as well as a copy of Mario Kart Wii.

However, the system lacks many of the original Wii’s capabilities. It will not have any internet capabilities, nor will it be able to play Nintendo Gamecube games. This limits users to only made-for-Wii games and eliminates Netflix, YouTube, and Hulu capabilities.

wiiumini

This system seems like a desperate attempt by Nintendo to make up for poor Wii U sales. With a used Wii costing less than $70, buying the Wii Mini simply does not seem worth it. One of the shining spots of the original Wii was the ability to download and play Nintendo 64 games on it. Being able to play Ocarina of Time again is one of the only reasons I still have my Wii. Without that capability, the console will lose a lot of its luster.

So for those of you who want to buy a cheap, fun, and family friendly console, try first to look for used Wii’s. You’ll be happy you did.

Mass Effect fans should clear their November 7th schedules to celebrate N7 Day 2013!

According to the official BioWare Blog, various Mass Effect events and activities are planned for the day. Owners of Mass Effect 3 for the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC will be able to play head-on-head against the game developers in multiplayer. Fans will also be able to see a video gameplay of the Mass Effect Risk board game, which looks like the coolest version of Risk ever made.

Fans can also submit their homemade Mass Effect artwork to be showcased on an upcoming product at the BioWare store. Winners will begin to be selected on N7 Days. Fans will also be able to submit Mass Effect themed Minecraft creations to be viewed by BioWare.

Not only does N7 day support video game fun, but it also supports Child’s Play, an organization that improves the lives of children in hospitals. One of a kind signed game art will be donated to the organization to be auctioned off, along with some awesome BioWare gear.

So starting getting excited, Mass Effect fans! Where will you YOU be on N7 day?

Looking to improve your typing skills but too busy gaming? The Typing of the Dead: Overkill combines the best of both worlds in one gory game.

Sega has just released the typing instructor version of their House of the Dead: Overkill. With your keyboard as your gun, shoot down hoards of zombies in nine different stages with three levels of difficulty. The game will introduce a free co-op multiplayer mode soon, according to the description on Steam. It will also include a port of the original PS3 edition of House of the Dead.

The game available now half-off at only $10 until November 1st – after that it slides back up to $19.99. It is available on Steam and Sega’s Digital Store.

Having played a previous version of Typing of the Dead, I can tell you from experience that this is one of the best typing instructors around. Not only is it immensely fun, but nothing gets you to type faster than being attacked by a horde of zombies. So quit typing for school papers and start typing to survive!

J.W. Rinzler, an author and editor for Lucasfilm’s book division, has uncovered an amusing blooper reel from the original Star Wars movie.

First revealed at Comic-Con this past summer, the video has recently been uploaded to YouTube. At least for now, Star Wars fans will be able to experience the movie in a new way. From Harrison Ford eating his headset to stormtroopers stumbling all over the set, this reel won’t disappoint. Though most of the video is filled with hilarity, it is especially touching to see how dedicated Mark Hamill is to pronouncing “supernova” correctly.

Watch it for yourself below! Note: the first 48 seconds of the video are silent.

Imgur user Smtkz has leaked pictures of alien-filled gameplay from Call of Duty:Ghosts .

It appears that the images are from gameplay similar to the zombie mode from the previous games. However in this mode, which is called Extinction, players fight off aliens instead of the undead. Images of some of the aliens, weapons, upgrades and achievements were posted.

Infinity Ward has since posted a teaser video for Extinction on Instagram. The video features the game’s iconic skull image changing into an alien.

Call of Duty: Ghosts will be available for the PC, PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii U on November 5th. It will also be coming out as a launch title for the Xbox One and the PS4. Check out the leaked images below, and let us know if you’re excited!

Briefly: Fans of Mass Effect are now be able to pre-order a hoody inspired by Garrus or Tali.

The hoodies were designed by Mass Effect fan and DeviantArt user Lupodirosso, who created designs for several of the game’s main characters. BioWare first announced it would make the mock-ups a reality back in May.

Orders are expected to ship on November 18th through the BioWare store. Each hoody is currently available for a limited time at a cool $58.

Order now to celebrate the next gen consoles with this next gen look!

If you are a fan of Borderlands and a fan of Halloween, then you are in luck! T.K. Baha’s Bloody Harvest, the brand new Borderlands 2 DLC pack, incorporates the best of both worlds into one piece of awesome gameplay.

For only $2.99, Borderlands 2 players can travel to the new Hallowed Hollow location. There they will find a variety of new spooky enemies, locations, and objects. From blowing up skeletons, smashing pumpkins, and eating candy powerups, this DLC truly gives players the best of Halloween and Borderlands fun.

While the DLC is short and can completed in one sitting, the low price and the goodies to be had by completing it easily make up for that. It is the first in a series of compact and modestly priced Headhunter pack DLCs for the game.

So if you want some fun holiday gameplay and have a couple bucks to spare, I highly recommend picking up T.K. Baha’s Bloody Harvest! The DLC is available for the PS3, Xbox 360, PC, and OS X versions of the game.

It appears the rumor that Tim Burton is involved in a Beetlejuice sequel has turned out to be true. According to TheWrap, Burton is officially in talks to direct Beetlejuice 2 for Warner Brothers.

It is assumed that Michael Keaton will once again take on the role of the wise-cracking “ghost with the most.”

Although the movie being discussed, it most likely won’t be out for a while. Both Burton and Keaton are working on projects, and according to The Hollywood Reporter, Burton has not yet read the latest draft of the script. Still, the talks are promising!

While a lot of time has passed since the original 1988 movie was released, I have high hopes that the sequel it can live up to its predecessor and become another Halloween classic. With Keaton being involved in some highly anticipated upcoming movies (Robocop, Toy Story 4, Need for Speed…) and Burton just coming down from a recent Oscar nomination for the 2012 movie Frankenweenie, Beetlejuice 2 will be must see, at least for me!

What do you think of the news? Are you excited for a Beetlejuice sequel?
