Briefly: As if Fallout 4 needed any more advertisement, Bethesda today launched a hilarious new campaign called ‘Do You Know What Makes You S.P.E.C.I.A.L.?’.

S.P.E.C.I.A.L., of course, is an acronym that stands for Strength, Perception, Endurance, Charisma, Intelligence, Agility, Luck. This makes up the character stat system in the Fallout series, and it’s pretty freaking clever.

The video campaign began today with a video detailing the Strength stat, and just what it can do for you in the game. The video comes in the format of a 1950’s style cartoon, and as with all Fallout marketing, it’s so freaking cool.

Take a look at the video below, and let us know what you think! Fallout 4 hits PS4, Xbox One, and PC on November 10th! The company has also just detailed a season pass, which normally wouldn’t interest me at all, but c’mon, it’s Fallout.

Looks like we’ve already got our long term Fallout 4 gameplan all sorted. With the announcement that there are no level caps in Fallout 4, we were all pretty happy with the end game content of the game.

Bethesda let loose this great bounty of news on their official blog today. That besides the normally expected hotfixes and free content we’ve come to expect from Bethesda, they’ve announced some SWEET details of their Season Pass, paid DLC releases and their mod support!

The most important thing in our games is the freedom you have to create your own experience, and modding is a big part of that. Like all our previous games, we’ve made sure to keep Fallout 4 open and moddable at every step in development. Early next year we’ll release for free the new Creation Kit for the PC. This is the same tool we use in the studio. You’ll be able to create your own mods and share them with others. We’re especially excited these same mods will then be coming to Xbox One, and then PlayStation 4.

We’ve always done a lot of DLC for our games. We love making them and you always ask us for more. To reward our most loyal fans, this time we’ll be offering a Season Pass that will get you all of the Fallout 4 DLC we ever do for just $30. Since we’re still hard at work on the game, we don’t know what the actual DLC will be yet, but it will start coming early next year. Based on what we did for Oblivion, Fallout 3, and Skyrim, we know that it will be worth at least $40, and if we do more, you’ll get it all with the Season Pass.

Thanks again to all of you! The support and excitement you’ve given Fallout 4 has blown us away. It’s energized us even more to do everything we can in these final months to make this our best game yet. We absolutely can’t wait for you to play it, and share your adventures with us and each other.

Usually the term “Season Pass” is met with furrowed brows and furiously angry comments on Reddit, but in the case of Fallout 4, I’m okay with it. The expansions that have come with past “modern” Fallout titles have always at least met their dollar amount in play value. It is refreshing to know that they haven’t event begun to start WORKING on the expansions. FABULOUS!

Fallout 4 hits store shelves November 10th on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.

Briefly: Mortal Kombat fan eagerly awaiting the release of Mortal Kombat X on PS3 or Xbox 360 because you haven’t bitten the bullet on a current generation console yet?

Well, we hope that you weren’t holding your breath. Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment revealed today that the game will not release for either console.

Here’s the announcement, straight from the official forum:

After months of development, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment has come to the regrettable conclusion that we cannot release Mortal Kombat X for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Please know our teams worked diligently to meet the quality standards set by the current-gen versions of the game. We were not able to get the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions to the quality expected of a Mortal Kombat game and are very sorry for not being able to deliver the products as originally planned.

If you pre-ordered Mortal Kombat X for PS3 or Xbox 360, please go to the retail location where you pre-ordered the game and you will receive a full refund.

We figured that something was up when the past-gen version of the game was delayed just before launch, but we didn’t see this coming.

Disappointed? Is it enough to make you pick up a PS4 or Xbox One? Sound out below.

Hatsune Miku, the virtual pop star who brings weebs to their knees with a swing of her leek, is heading to the TV World in Persona 4: Dancing All Night as a paid DLC character.

Packaged with the song Heaven Feat. Hatsune Miku (ATOLS Remix), and getting a Shin Megami style redesign by longtime series illustrator Shigenori Soejima, Miku looks like she fits right in to this dark world surrounded by darkness and death. Maybe the rhythm brightens the mood?

As one of Sega’s hottest commodities at the moment, Miku’s own games have been a solid mover and shaker in both Japan and the States, so with Sega’s recent purchase of Atlus, it’s not too surprising that the world’s most famous vocaloid is making her presence known. Adding to the fact that the developers behind her games were originally set to develop P4: DAN in its early stages, and this could be considered a reunion of sorts. One question though, since every character summons their Persona after a strong performance, what will Miku’s be!?

Confused? Check out our E3 preview of the next Persona spinoff here, along with our review of Hatsune Miku: Project Diva f 2nd to get up to speed, then take a look at this batch of screenshots showing her in action below. The Miku DLC is scheduled for a late 2015 release, with no plans set for a Western release. Then again, it’s Miku, so there’s no way she’s getting left out here!

As one of the biggest perpetrators when it came to nickel and diming in their games with downloadable content in the previous generation, it looks like Capcom is working towards regaining some goodwill.

At EVO, the team behind Street Fighter V revealed that the copy you buy early next year will be the only copy you ever need to own. In lieu of the “Super” or “Ultra” versions that have become a running joke over the years, (so much so that the company teased itself when it released Super Ultra Dead Rising 3 Arcade Remix Hyper Edition EX,) the team promised that all content would be rolled out over time as its completed, which can potentially extend the life of the game for years to come.

But how much will this cost? According to Capcom, it’s free if you want it to be! While the option to purchase these characters with Zenny, (which is bought with real money,) the hilariously named Fight Money can be earned through regular play. Fight Money can be cashed in to buy the new content in game, allowing players to travel back to ten years ago and actually unlock new fighters just by playing the game. Exactly how difficult it will be to accumulate this currency has yet to be detailed, but the fact that everything can be used in game without paying an extra dime is definitely a step in the right direction.

To me, this is the best case scenario of what DLC can be. When it was first promised all the way back in the original Xbox days, it was advertised as a type of PC expansion set for consoles, which would expand our games for years to come with huge amounts of content. What we ended up with, was disc locked content that was already completed and planned before development, content being pulled out of games to sell later, and releasing bare bones titles that would later sell the same kinds of items that would have been unlockable only a few years prior. If this model proves successful for Capcom, we can only hope more of the industry will follow suit.

Don’t forget to pre-order in time to join the PS4 online beta on July 23rd! Let us know what you think of the news, then get your games ready and throw down with us later this week!

As a huge fan of rhythm games, even I was exhausted from the constant Guitar Hero releases in the mid to late 2000’s. Between GH and rival series, Rock Band, the over saturation of a suddenly hot genre led to both series’ fading away as quickly as they rose to prominence. While the good folks at Harmonix seem to be playing it safe with their next effort, complete with backwards compatible instruments on Xbox and nearly their entire back catalog available as DLC, the team at FreeStyleGames, (primarily known for their DJ Hero games and Sing Party for Wii U,) is going back to basics. With a brand new, six button guitar, an original interface that uses real, first person stage footage for certain shows, and a total revamp of the traditional playlist, Live surprised me with the drastic shift its taken compared to its previously successful formula.

Starting with the guitar, if you’re expecting five colored buttons, you’re going to be in for a shock. The only frets this time around are six buttons at the top of the neck, three that go sideways and three more right under them. To say it’s an adjustment to play is an understatement, since even a Guitar Hero veteran like myself was having trouble with even the most basic songs. Thankfully, Star Power, (now called Hero Powers,) was still there to bail me out after hitting a series of particular notes in succession. In terms of the core game play though, it’s about what you would expect. Adding a fret-less strum, as well as single and double frets for a total of 10 possible inputs, difficult songs can get very complicated. My only complaint with the new set up is would be that hitting double frets, (holding the top and bottom buttons on the same column,) took special effort, not feeling intuitive at all. Then again, it will probably take more than 10 minutes to get used to the guitar, so maybe I just suck. We’ll reserve final judgement for now.

Guitar Hero Live E3 Screen 3

Consisting of two main modes of play, the equivalent to a career section would be the Live Mode. Taking place in first person, you’re tasked with touring with a band, performing whatever songs are on your crew’s set list. The crowd responds to your performance in real time, so what might start as cheering  can quickly turn into a sea of insulting signs, trash thrown on stage, and a verbal lashing from your band mates. As you’d expect, progressing leads to new songs and venues, but this time, with the intention of creating an authentic on-stage experience.

TV Mode on the other hand, can’t really be compared to any other modes of play. Consisting of three sub modes, (or channels in this case,) which consist of a themed channel that cycles different genres, a new music channel that rotates the game’s newest releases, and premium channels, sections where you’ll play special sets. The first two modes constantly change, going through a one hour rotation before the set lists change, keeping new music flowing at a constant basis. Premium on the other hand, isn’t just a title, since some will use never before on stage footage from the actual band that the challenge is based around. As in, footage which was recorded during their performances in first person just for this game!

Guitar Hero Live E3 Screen 1

In these modes, the game is always running, even when you’re not around. Songs continue to play on each channel, and selecting them through TV will throw you into the song at whatever point it’s at when you start. As you perform, you’ll be automatically thrown into matchmaking and compared to other players who play at a similar level. Scoring high, reaching certain combo goals, (which is much easier to see thanks to the glowing notes that signify each multiple of 50,) and completing other challenges unlocks more EXP and bonuses, with even more content being offered at the Premium section.

Speaking of, knowing how much potential Premium holds, the game is also going to make you work for the right to play it. Premium challenges can only be played by spending in game currency that’s earned through other modes. All of the game’s newest content will be debuted on this channel, so any new DLC will likely be centered around a specific band or theme, forcing players to go head to head at songs no one has played before. Serving as the mode that yields the most unlockable content, highest EXP bonuses and exclusive, timed items, the devs want you to constantly check in to see what new challenges await. After all, once some of these in game items are gone, they’re gone for good, and WILL NOT be sold as future DLC, so you might want to make sure your guitar skills are up to snuff when the time comes around.

Guitar Hero Live E3 Screen 2

As EXP is earned, it can be used to customize your equipment, unlock new note highway designs, and even obtain other Hero Powers. With it’s current system, you’ll be able to adjust the game to cater to your play style, so if you want your guitar to earn more points per note, carry more Hero Power, raise its maximum multiplier or reach higher multipliers with fewer notes, it’s all yours to upgrade! How this will affect online matches is unknown, but we trust that there will be a level of balancing included when the final game releases. Outside of game play, special channels will open up that features music and genres that you tend to play most often, so you’ll rarely be stuck playing songs you don’t like! It’s clear that this could be the most customizable rhythm game to date, which we’re very excited about!

Now, to the most controversial part of what makes Guitar Hero Live stand out. The good news is that you will never have to pay a dime for DLC. After it debuts in the Premium Channel, the newest songs will eventually be cycled through the normal channels, depending on genre and band like the normal songs. But what if you don’t want to play randomized channels and want to play whatever songs you want on demand? This is where the pay wall comes in. During normal progression, you’ll unlock a separate currency called Plays. Each Play can be exchanged for the right to play any song, DLC or otherwise, at your choosing, including customizing a playlist in exchange for multiple Plays. If you run out however, you’ll have to pay out of pocket for more. And what about those times where you have a group over who wants to try everything? In these cases, unlimited passes can be purchased, which give you access to the full library to play as much as you want for a limited time. New challenges cycle through on a regular basis, so there will never be a time where Plays can’t be unlocked  for free, but this might not bode well for those who want to play what they want when they want.

What I took away from my time with Guitar Hero Live is that it’s looking to be more ambitious than I ever expected it to be. With a new guitar, new note chart, fully customizable game play, some impressive on stage technology and a completely different approach on the standard DLC model, we’re excited to see what the future holds for the former franchise’s comeback tour!

Retailing at $99.99, look for Guitar Hero Live this October.

Aww, you were just a day away from keeping it a surprise, Nintendo.

If two allegedly leaked YouTube videos are to be believed, then it looks like Fire Emblem‘s Roy is making his grand return alongside Ryu, the face of the Street Fighter series. The two reels show what appears to be their arcade mode ending sequences, showing off small glimpses of what they have in store for their opponents once their release date comes.

From what we can tell, Roy still has similarities to Marth, the character his move set was cloned from in Melee. Still, a closer look at his animations, (namely his Up-B attack,) seem to have some slight differences compared to his past attacks. Is there a chance that Roy will be more of his own character, especially when Lucina already fills the role of a Math clone?

Ryu on the other hand, looks like he’s bringing something completely new to the Smash Bros arena. Coming equipped with his focus attacks, hadoukens, shoryukens and hurricane kicks, (feel free to spell out the Japanese name, because I’m not doing it,) most telling is the legendary fighter’s apparent ability to perform legitimate combos, something which isn’t normally possible outside of high level play. Will this change the way players approach the game? I can’t wait to find out!

Alongside these leaks, further rumors suggest new trophies for the Inkling and Ryu’s best friend, Ken, a new Dreamland 64 stage, Ryu’s iconic Street Fighter II Dojo stage, and Mii Fighter costumes, including Zero from Mega Man X, Mega Man .EXE, Akira and Jacky from Virtua Fighter, Animal Crossing‘s Isabelle and Heihachi from Tekken. At this point, we’re almost guaranteed to get the official word from Nintendo during E3 week, but it seems like the cat’s out of the bag.

While not terribly surprising for those who knew that sound files for Roy and Ryu were part of the Mewtwo update, it’s still surreal to see the biggest fighting game icon make an appearance in Nintendo’s all star brawler as the first, true original character as part of Smash’s DLC line up. Roy is a little more expected, since I felt his inclusion was an inevitability once DLC was announced, but I’m hoping more unique characters see their returns soon, (especially Wolf, Snake and Ice Climbers, although the last two probably aren’t possible.) Speaking of Snake, if copyright is an issue, can we at least slap his move set on the Mach Rider guy or something?

What’s your reaction to the news, and who would you like to see next?

June 14th is turning out to be an eventful day! Between the Nintendo World Championships, the release of Lucas, a new stage, and character costumes for Super Smash Bros., and our very own Geekscape picnic, it’s not as if we needed more plans for that day! But when it comes to new Smash news, I’m sure we’ll find a way to spare 20 minutes.

Starting at 7:40 AM Pacific, Nintendo will broadcast a new Nintendo Direct, hosted by Masahiro Sakurai himself. The only thing being promised at this point is new content, so while I’m trying not to get my hopes up too high out of fear that the previously announced DLC will be all that is discussed, I can’t help but feel that something big is coming, especially just outside of E3. And if new characters are announced separately from the main E3 Direct, how amazing will Nintendo’s presentation be on the 16th if Smash of all things got bumped?

Will we see Roy return? Or will the rumored Ryu be confirmed? Will Chibi Robo get in in light of its newly announced game!? Let the speculation begin! Tell us who you want to see, then come back and compare your predictions after the Direct wraps up!

Following its first content update, which added an NES Zapper, ranked battles and a new stage to the online combat, Splatoon has received yet another addition in the form of the Ink Brush.

As part of the Ink Roller class of weapons, the Ink Brush is primarily focused on short range combat, allowing Inklings to paint the floors in front of them while splashing bursts of ink in front of them. Yet, in order to be effective with this newest tool, you’ll have to rethink the way a roller should be played.

Typically, rollers cover large amounts of ground when charging forward, whereas the short burst shots cover a short distance in front of them with a concentrated splash, (similar to a shotgun in other shooters.) With the Ink Brush, its width is greatly reduced, making painting the ground less viable for coverage, but gains heightened running speed in return. However, when firing, the splash it creates is much wider, covering huge areas with the mashing of the trigger while holding off would-be foes. Throw in the sprinkler sub weapon for sustained painting, and the Ink Strike special weapon to rain terror on the enemy from above, and you’re left with an exciting, fast paced weapon. Maybe Bob Ross was on to something!

Having fun with Splatoon so far? Tell us about your greatest battles, favorite weapons and overall impressions below!

Nintendo has announced that on June 14th, Super Smash Bros. will receive its next DLC update, including Brawl favorite, Lucas.

Hailing from the Game Boy Advance RPG, Mother 3, (which STILL has yet to be released in the West,) Lucas looks like he’s bringing all the abilities he had from his last appearance. Similar to Mother 2/Earthbound star, Ness at first glance, each of Lucas’ special moves have different properties. Relying more on his trademark PSI moves for his standard attacks, these moves extend his reach with most moves while relying less on tools. Top that off with his trusty Rope Snake for long range grabbing or edge tethering, and it’s easy to see why Lucas was so missed.

Previously announced alongside Mewtwo’s release date, Lucas will release for $3.99 for one version of Smash, or $4.99 for both the Wii U and 3DS. In addition, a free Miiverse themed stage, and the Splatoon costume pack for the playable Mii characters, (which will be free for those who kept their GameStop pick up receipts for the new shooter,) will also be added, helping an already large game get that much bigger.

What characters do you hope join the battle next?

As Nintendo’s first full forray into the competitive shooter genre, the title has been receiving praise across the board for its creative take on the squad based combat. Yet, the one consistant complaint that keeps popping up is its lack of content, launching in a somewhat barebones state. Nintendo was open about this fact, detailing how the game would be slowly expanded throughout the summer until it receives a huge content update in August. This week, the first bit of content trickled into the confines of Inkopolis in the form of a new weapon and stage.

First, the N-Zap 85 Rapid Shooter should look familiar to anyone who grew up playing Duck Hunt as a kid instead of going outside. Featuring a familiar design, this gun shoots at a heightened pace with greater ink efficiency at the expense of power. Even then, with the Echolocator special weapon and splat bombs as its secondary, Inklings equiped with this set will be able to cover ground quickly while identifying enemies on the map and bombing them with instant detonation.

In addition, Port Mackerel is the latest map to make its way into the online turf war, bringing the total up to six. For those who have reached level 10 and beyond, ranked matches in the form of Splat Zones can now be accessed as well. Ranked plays different from Turf War, with the goal is to capture certain spots on the map as opposed to filling the arena with paint. This more traditional mode makes frags more viable with a different set of strategies required to win. Think you can adapt?

While still light on the content, this is a good first step in what is sure to be a Splatoon filled summer. What are your thoughts on the game so far? Be heard in the comments, and make sure to look out for our full review very soon!

Briefly: I’m a huge fan of Mario Kart 8. It was the first entry in the series that I spent a substantial amount of time with, and it’s a game that I continue to frequently play with friends to this day. I’ve probably put more hours into Mario Kart 8 than any other game I’ve ever played.

That being said, for players like me, the game is freaking easy. Every Mario Kart title has offered 50, 100, and 150cc difficulties, and once you’ve put enough time into the game, even 150cc mode will have you feeling like you’re playing by yourself.

Today, on April 1st of all days, Nintendo announced a new, free 200cc mode to launch alongside the game’s second DLC pack. Take a look at the fast-as-hell trailer below:

That is fast, and I really can’t wait to get my hands on it. Each cc mode vastly raises the amount of skill needed to beat each of the game’s cups. I can’t even imagine what 200cc will bring, but it’s pretty clear from the above video that it won’t be easy.

The free update will arrive on April 23rd, which is also the new release date of the game’s second DLC pack (it was originally slated for May). Nintendo today also showed off an Animal Crossing stage from the upcoming DLC pack, and it’s just as cute as you’d imagine. You can take a look at the DLC video below, and let us know if you’re excited!

It appears Jason Vorhees isn’t the only 80’s movie icon joining the bloodbath this April.

During a NetherRealm Studios live stream yesterday afternoon, it was announced that Predator will join Friday the 13th’s own Jason Vorhees as part of the Kombat Pack DLC set for release on April 14, 2015 for PS4 and XBOX One. The DLC pack, which will come bundled with the Limited and ‘Kollector’s’ editions of Mortal Kombat X, will include skin packs and two additional yet-to-be revealed playable characters alongside Jason and Predator. Customers may also purchase the DLC pack separately for $30 USD from the PlayStation Store or XBOX Marketplace.

Mortal_kombat_X_Normal-720x404

With Jason and Predator thrown in the mix, who do you think those last two unannounced fighters will be? Perhaps another 80’s film icon or a fighter from Mortal Kombat’s past? Let us know who you think should be added to what appears to be one incredible cast of DLC characters. If Chucky or the Xenomorph from Aliens gets announced, I’m going to faint.

Briefly: If you caught the latest episode of Geekscape Games, you heard us talk about Shadow of Mordor‘s final DLC, titled The Bright Lord, in which you take the reigns as Celebrimbor (and the power of the One ring), and eventually take on Sauron himself.

The DLC features ten new missions, much harder Uruk enemies, and much more. Here are the notes from Monolith:

NEW PLAYABLE CHARACTER – Play as Celebrimbor, the Bright Lord, and wield the One Ring to become invisible and tear through your enemies from the shadows. Gain access to all new abilities including deadly new Elven Archery abilities with a rapid fire bow and new ways to dominate your enemies and build your Army including Shadow Brand.

New Campaign Story and Missions – Face off with the Dark Lord in a brand new story campaign, including 10 new missions. In addition, face an elite orc army with more powerful and upgraded warriors and deadly new abilities.

New Skin – Play as Celebrimbor in the original Shadow of Mordor story campaign.

Test of the Ring – Test your skills as Celebrimbor and utilize his unique skills to take down new nemeses and gain bonuses for branding your enemies.

It sounds like quite an addition to the main campaign, and especially welcome after hearing Josh describe the stellar title’s lacklustre ending. Take a look at the trailer for The Bright Lord below, and let us know what you think!

Return to the Second Age and face the Dark Lord Sauron. Play as Celebrimbor, the Elven Lord who forged the Rings of Power and return to Middle-earth thousands of years before the events of Shadow of Mordor.

Briefly: We’re all beyond excited for Nintendo to release the first DLC pack for the phenomenal Mario Kart 8, and the publisher is now teasing just what we can expect in the first pack’s eight new tracks.

Today, Nintendo debuted an Excitebike themed track for the game. From the video, it’s clear to see that the course will garner some nostalgic feelings from older Nintendo fans, and probably some feelings of frustration from everybody. It looks fairly flat and straight, so you can definitely expect to be hit by a lot of green shells and fireballs. Oh, and the locations of ramps and speed boosts change each time you race, so good luck with that.

Take a look at the Excitebike preview below, and let us know what you think! Each DLC pack will cost you a more-than-reasonable $7.99, or you can pick up the two-pack bundle for $11.99.

Looks like fun, huh?

With nearly every important character from Persona 3 and Persona 4 included in the upcoming fighter, Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, it was only a matter of time before The Empress made her appearance. Starting the week after release, Margret, the Velvet Room Attendant from P4 will make her fighting game debut as downloadable content.

While every other character in the game is limited to one Persona, Margaret will command multiple ones, including Cu Chulanin, Yoshitsune and Ardha on top of eight Persona Cards. To say that she has the deck stacked against her opponents would be an understatement, (pun kind-of intended), and anyone who faced off against her in the core RPG series knows how dangerous she is. How will this play out in a fighting game arena? And what will happen when she comes face to face with her sister, Elizabeth, who abandoned the position that Margaret currently holds? We’ll have to wait a little longer to find out.

Unlike the previously announced characters, Adachi and Marie, Margaret WILL NOT be free at any point, but will be available for purchase after the free period for the first two downloadable characters passes. The price point hasn’t been revealed yet, but if it’s anything like Arc System Works’ previous fighters, there’s a good chance it can get pricey. Plus, I’m sure the DLC announcements aren’t done yet, since there’s still one major character who’s missing from the fight. Any guesses?

Persona 4 Arena Ultimax will arrive on the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 on September 30th.

We reported over the last few months on the reveal of two DLC characters that are coming to Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, the sadistic detective, Adachi, and the mysterious tsundere poet, Marie. Though we’ve seen various screenshots, we finally have our chance to see them in action.

Adachi uses Magatsu Izanagi to fuel his insane need for destruction. From the trailer, it’s clear that it will be used in a completely different way compared to Yu’s standard Izanagi. With Marie, her weather effects help her manipulate the field, allowing her to do damage with her giant bag, not to mention her Persona, Izanami. But is there more to her relationship with her Persona as meets the eye?

Both Marie and Adachi will be available as free DLC for the first week, starting on September 30th. Two free characters are a hard thing to come by these days, so any fighting fans or Atlus enthusiasts should jump on the deal. Until then, check out the trailer and let us know if you’re planning on picking the game up!

To celebrate the 22nd anniversary of Super Mario Kart‘s release, Nintendo has announced that three Mercedes-Benz vehicles, based on real models that have been developed by the car maker, will arrive as free DLC on August 27th.

Consisting of the Silver Arrow of the 1930’s, the 300 SL Roadster from the 1950’s, and the modern GLA, (which comes with its own special wheel options), this DLC pack will kick off a “Mercedes Cup” tournament. Taking place between August 27th thru September 23rd, players from all around the world will be able to put these new vehicles to the test, and prove their luxury car supremacy.

In addition, the game will receive a new update, with a plethora of fixes and enhancements that will surely improve the game. According to Nintendo’s official press release, they include the following:

Drivers will now have the option to display the course map on the TV screen during races.
The order of the menu after each race will be changed to “Next Race”, followed by “Watch Highlight Reel”.
The game will remember the most recent kart options that were selected, even if the Wii U system was powered down.
Users will be able to change options of other players’ Mario Kart TV downloaded highlight reels, such as changing the focus to different characters or actions.
A score screen will be added so players can see how many coins they’ve collected, the win-loss record of their online battles and their frequently used characters.
Improved the stability of the online connection to enhance user experience during online battles.

Free DLC and a ton of fixes? Not too bad if you ask me! Of course, you can always show your appreciation for all the free stuff by downloading the original Super Mario Kart, which hit the Wii U eShop today for $7.99. Or not, if soul crushing difficulty and a wall-less Rainbow Road isn’t your idea of a good time.

Now that Mercedes-Benz in Mario Kart is officially a thing here in the States, is there anything else you would like to see come to the franchise? And who else will be participating in the tournament? You’ll be sure to spot me in your rear view mirror, assuming they go back that far.

A few weeks back, Persona 4 baddie, Tohru Adachi, was confirmed as a playable character in the upcoming Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, but only in Japan. Then last week, Atlus revealed that not only would the sadistic detective be coming to the West, but would be available as free day one DLC… assuming you download him during the first week of release.

Free sounds pretty good, right? Especially with all of the pack in extras that first prints of the game are receiving, such as a Teddy bag and a half set of tarot cards, (the other half will be bundled in the 3DS title, Persona Q. Those clever bastards). But if you’re still on the fence, you can always check out Adachi in action in these latest screen shots!

If our E3 coverage was any indication, P4A:U looks like it will be the fighter to beat this holiday season. With free DLC and pack in items on top of a great game, what reason is there not to give it a look? Try to think of one. I’ll wait.

Persona 4 Arena Ultimax is scheduled to release on September 30th.

Dead Rising 3 shined during the Xbox One’s launch, but just because it was a launch title doesn’t mean there’s not plenty of love being thrown its way courtesy of some new DLC. Needless to say, it can only be described as … surreal.

Titled Dead Rising 3: Super Ultra Arcade Remix Hyper Edition + Alpha, I seriously thought that was a joke at first. But nope, it was real, and it looks amazing! Lettling players choose between the four series protagonists, including Frank West and Chuck Greene from the first two games, they will be granted costumes and abilities spanning the 31 years of Capcom’s history. Yes, even Mega Man.

For my money, Dead Rising 3 is the best exclusive game on either of the two newest consoles, and this content might be enough of a reason for me to get back into it. Being able to play as B.B. Hood, Regina from Dino Crisis or throw Shinku Hadoukens dressed as Ryu while fighting a horde of zombies looks like it could be one of the most bizarre, yet down right fun moments we could have with the game. That in itself is a huge feat to accomplish considering how tongue in cheek the game is already, but I can’t help but laugh at the self aware title. Oh, and watch out for giant Zombie Bison!

Can you name all of the games parodied in the title? Dead Rising 3: Super Ultra Arcade Remix Hyper Edition + Alpha, (I love typing that), is available now on Xbox One!

For the most part, Nintendo has stayed away from downloadable content until very recently. Adding new level packs in games like New Super Mario Bros 2 and Pikmin 3 amongst others have served as the company’s way of testing the waters with paid expanded content, but it looks like they’re going all in with Mario Golf: World Tour for the 3DS.

If you happened to steer clear of the many Mario spinoffs that have been released over the years, I assure you that Mario Golf has traditionally been one of the better ones. After playing a demo at Wondercon this year, it seems like everything is essentially the same as previous years on the Mushroom Kingdom greens. New power shots accompany the tried and true two click swing mechanics of most mascot golf games of this nature, where pressing A in sync with the power and accuracy meters result in better shots. The demo had standard tournament mode, coin mode where players collect coins with their swings, and ring mode, where the goal is to hit the ball through, well… take a guess.

Mario Golf World Tour Screen 1Fun times were had, but you can’t expect too much change from a golf game.

It was just as fun as I remember it, if not a little familiar. But the most significant change to the series won’t come until release date, when Nintendo launches their first DLC Season Pass with the title. DLC is a sensitive subject for many in the gaming community. Some see it as a great way to expand on a game, while others see it as a cash grab that can be used as an excuse to hold back content for the purpose of selling it later. While some might have seen Nintendo’s attempt at the business strategy as the end of times, their approach with Mario Golf seems to be pretty reasonable.

Adding 108 holes and four extra characters to a game that already features 126 holes to play on, the $15 or $5.99 that the individual packs cost can almost double the amount of content. Starting on May 2nd, (the game’s release date, which is usually a DLC cardinal sin), players can pick up the Mushroom Pack, which comes with Toadette. The Flower Pack with Mario Galaxy star, Rosalina, and the Star Pack with New Super Mario Bros U newcomer Nabbit, will release in the coming weeks. Those who buy the pass will gain exclusive access to Gold Mario, who comes with the Golden Flower power up, causing his shots to generate coins as they travel! Buying all of the individual packs will unlock him as well, but only once the last pack is released.

Mario Golf World Tour Gold MarioAll Gold Everything

While this is all well and good, some fans might still see this as nickel and diming, (which I admittedly did too at first), but considering the game is already being sold at a discounted price of $29.99, including the season pass makes it about five dollars more than a standard 3DS game for double the content. Combined with the online functionality and tournaments that it promises to bring, and it’s looking like a pretty good deal. To top it off, each pack will have demo versions so you can try before you buy. That’s something every piece of DLC should have if you ask me. I could have saved a decent amount on crappy Rock Band tracks if I had known they had boring track layouts.

So what’s the verdict on Nintendo’s approach of their first season pass? Do you think other companies should follow this model, or do you think it’s a slippery slope leading to us having to pay for our special worlds in later installments? Let us know, and be sure to check back for a full review of Mario Golf: World Tour in the days after its release.

Lightning Returns brings many new features to the XIII series, many of which were detailed in our E3 preview. Most prominently, Lightning’s ever growing wardrobe/class change function has been much talked about. In recent months, we’ve learned that Lightning will be able to don outfits paying homage to Final Fantasy alumni such as Cloud Strife, Aeris, (Aerith?) Gainsborough and Yuna, but now it seems that Square Enix’s two most dominant women are due for a crossover.

It was revealed that gamers will be able to download a Lara Croft costume for Lightning, dirty face and all. As with all of the in game costumes, this one comes with its own set of equipment, which include the trademark pick axe and riot shield from Lara’s latest re imagining.

After the success of the multi million selling Tomb Raider reboot, it makes perfect sense that Square’s most famous franchise will show it some love. All I know is that this costume will be on my hard drive the moment February 11th arrives.

Briefly: Batman: Arkham Origins received some very polarizing reviews when it launched this October (I haven’t had a chance to check out the game yet, so I’m not sure where my opinion sits), but that doesn’t mean that the upcoming Initiation DLC doesn’t look very cool.

The Initiation Challenge Map Add-On focuses on Bruce Wayne before he donned his cowl, and introduces a new challenge campaign with four unique challenge maps and two original skins — Initiation Bruce Wayne and Vigilante Bruce Wayne.

Set high in the Paektu-San Mountains of North Korea, the Initiation Add-On follows a young Bruce Wayne as he faces his ultimate test. Players will embark upon a series of challenge maps that test their martial arts training across exotic locales, including a bamboo forest and a mountain top monastery. Combat fresh enemies and face an epic final test to prove your worthiness to Bruce’s greatest and most pitiless teacher, Kirigi.

The DLC pack hits PS3, Xbox 360, Wii U, and PC tomorrow. Be sure to let us know what you thought of the base game, and if you’ll be picking up this DLC!

If you are a fan of Borderlands and a fan of Halloween, then you are in luck! T.K. Baha’s Bloody Harvest, the brand new Borderlands 2 DLC pack, incorporates the best of both worlds into one piece of awesome gameplay.

For only $2.99, Borderlands 2 players can travel to the new Hallowed Hollow location. There they will find a variety of new spooky enemies, locations, and objects. From blowing up skeletons, smashing pumpkins, and eating candy powerups, this DLC truly gives players the best of Halloween and Borderlands fun.

While the DLC is short and can completed in one sitting, the low price and the goodies to be had by completing it easily make up for that. It is the first in a series of compact and modestly priced Headhunter pack DLCs for the game.

So if you want some fun holiday gameplay and have a couple bucks to spare, I highly recommend picking up T.K. Baha’s Bloody Harvest! The DLC is available for the PS3, Xbox 360, PC, and OS X versions of the game.

It appears that both Nintendo and Capcom wanted to make the wait for Monster Hunter 4 that much more agonizing.

Today, during Japan’s Monster Hunter 4 Nintendo Direct, the two Felyne companions were not only wielding hammers, but were adorned in Mario and Luigi costumes as well. Not to be left out, the hunter will also have the ability to dress up as Link from The Legend of Zelda–complete with a Hylian shield and Master Sword! The gear can be unlocked by completing downloadable quests Japanese players can access from select 7-11 locations. No word if the downloadable content will hit the United States (let alone a release date for Monster Hunter 4), but it’s safe to assume Monster Hunter fans in the west will be treated to both, due to the success of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate.

Check out the video below and let us know what you think. What other Nintendo-inspired costumes and weapons would you love to see in Monster Hunter 4?

Briefly: Last week, NetherRealm Studios revealed that the next DLC character for Injustice: Gods Among Us would be none other than Zatanna.

The character’s first debut trailer showed some pretty impressive skills, along with (naturally) very flashy moves. Zatanna’s finishing move, however, is likely the most boring of the game’s entire roster.

The Zatanna DLC has just launched, and is now available for download (for a measly $5 / 400 MS Points) on PS3 and Xbox 360. Wii U owners like myself, are again out of luck, and will probably never see the DLC… like, ever.

Take a look at Zatanna’s history below, and let us know if you’ll be downloading the character!

Briefly: Last week it was reveal that J’onn J’onzz would not be the final DLC character to join Injustice: Gods Among Us‘ already expansive roster.

Today, Martian Manhunter officially released, and is absolutely itching for a fight. The character is available for $4.99 (or 400MS Points) on PS3 and Xbox 360. It has not been announced if or when he’ll be dropping on the Wii U version of the game (which seems to be all but forgotten these days).

NetherRealm today released a video describing the history of the character, so if you’re unfamiliar, take a look below, and let us know if you’ll be picking him up!

“Gods Among Us” debuts as a bold new fighting game franchise that introduces a deep, original story featuring a large cast of favorite DC Comics icons such as Batman, Cyborg, Harley Quinn, Nightwing, Deathstroke, Solomon Grundy, Superman, Lex Luthor, The Flash, Green Arrow, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Aquaman, Bane, Catwoman, Shazam, Black Adam, Raven, the Joker, Doomsday, Killer Frost, Ares and more. Set in a world where the lines between good and evil are blurred, players will experience heroes and villains engaging in epic battles on a massive scale.

Briefly: It’s finally been revealed.

Bioshock Infinite released all the way back in March to universal acclaim. The game is an incredibly beautiful story driven shooter that offers some of the best and most memorable moments in all of gaming.

Since its release, fans have been eagerly (understatement) awaiting the release, or simply the announcement, of DLC packs for the title. A DLC Season Pass for Infinite has been available since the game was still in its pre-order cycle, so we all knew something was coming, we just didn’t know what.

Until today, that is.

Irrational Games has spilled the beans on some incredible sounding content. The first pack, available now, is called ‘Clash in the Clouds’, and is a combat centric, very difficult looking arena shooter. Take a look at the trailer below:

Looks cool, huh? Not overly exciting, but cool. Now take a look at the trailer for ‘Burial at Sea’, the newly announced, not yet available DLC for Infinite:

‘Burial at Sea’ is a two-part, story driven adventure that takes what looks like an alternate Booker and Elizabeth back to Rapture. You’ll notice from the trailer that Rapture is looking pretty lively (and not destroyed) at this time, but if you look closer, you’ll also notice a certain date: December 31, 1958. Yep, that’s the night that Rapture fell.

It has also been revealed that chapter two of ‘Burial at Sea’ will have players take on the role of Elizabeth, and that gameplay will be much different while you’re in her shoes.

How excited are you for this one? Be sure to let us know!

Decisions, decisions.

As I sat in front of my television waiting for 400 Days to download from the Playstation Store, I thought I knew exactly what Telltale had in store for us: there’d be some new characters, some new drama, and some uncomfortable decisions, but there was no way that it would be able to match the level of intensity of the game’s seven-month-long first season. Apparently, I had no idea what I was really in for.

The board of survivors, again, playable in any order.
The board of survivors, again, playable in any order.

The Walking Dead: 400 Days takes a stark departure from the linearity of the previous chapters. As the game opens, you’ll have to make your first intriguing, yet tough decision: whose story will you play first? See, instead of following a few characters through a lengthy set of episodes, 400 Days offers five separate, short tales, beginning with a story just two days after the initial outbreak, and closing with an epilogue, fittingly 400 days into the zombie apocalypse.

That first choice is one of the most incredible and defining aspects of 400 Days. Each character’s journey is completely separate, yet oddly connected (there’s even a connection to events in Season One). The order that you play them in can and will drastically change the way you feel about characters, locations, and events that you experience later in the game. And what memorable events they are! Each character’s story in the DLC, be it Vince, Wyatt, Russell, Bonnie, or Shel, features events that will change you, decisions that you will question for days, and moments that will haunt you until Season Two releases this fall. The nail-biting intensity and “so nerve wracking that I need to pause or take a break” moments from every episode of the game’s first season are back in full force here.

I'm getting chills just thinking about this scene.
I’m getting chills just thinking about this scene.

The fact that these moments hold such weight is a true testament to Telltale’s consistent quality of writing and direction. Because 400 Days has so many stories to tell, each section’s playtime is astoundingly short. We spend only 20-30 minutes with each character, with someone’s life or well being in jeopardy for the bulk of that time, and yet I feel as though I’ve already had the opportunity to come to know each and every one of our new survivors. I’m still asking myself how that’s even possible, but Telltale’s writing ability is really what shines here, where character’s traits, hopes, fears, skills, past lives, and more are all revealed subtly, satisfyingly, and sometimes heartbreakingly, exactly when they need to be. I’ve said time and time again that Telltale’s The Walking Dead has featured some of gaming’s best writing, possibly ever, and 400 Days definitely keeps with that trend. I don’t want to give away too much, but again, the Telltale team does an exceptional job of putting you immediately in the shoes of characters who are both incredibly diverse and find themselves in incredibly diverse situations, like playing Roshambo to decide who checks outside the car for a possible survivor or pulling the trigger on another human being in order to maintain the safety of the group. The situations become so stressful to navigate that our Editor in Chief Jonathan told me he and his wife Laura had to start flipping a coin just to continue making decisions.

I have a great deal of praise to give 400 Days, but like all things in life, nothing is perfect. The PS3 version of the DLC, as with all previous chapters, plays host to a myriad of technical issues (I can’t comment on technical issues on other platforms). This time however, things were even worse: constant framerate drops, a lot of out-of-sync audio, and a consistently choppy camera actually had me concerned for my console’s health.

It's hard to say whose story was the most intense.
It’s hard to say whose story was the most intense.

Of course, as incredible and intense as these miniature tales manage to be, it’s simply impossible for them to match the cripplingly emotional tale of Lee, Clementine, and the other stars of season one. Our previous journey was seven months long, with hours upon hours of gameplay, countless tough decisions, and more moments of despair than any gamer should ever have to go through. At times, 400 Days simply feels paltry in comparison. Each tale could act as an extended scene of a bigger episode, and I think that it’s safe to say that all of us would love to play through these stories in their entirety.

That may lead to the most important and exciting aspect of 400 Days: what on Earth will come next? We’re nearly halfway through the Summer now, with Telltale set to begin a second season in the fall. Could 400 Days act as an introduction to our next group of survivors? I almost feel as though it has to. If not, why would the developer create a new batch of amazingly real, relatable characters if we were only meant to spend a few minutes with each of them? And how does 400 Days continue to connect to Season One? Could our new group meet up with a hardened and alone Clementine? Could our choices from the game’s first season affect the character that Clementine has become?

Clementine ranks among video gaming's best characters... ever.
Clementine ranks among video gaming’s best characters… ever.

If this insanely dramatic and intense DLC chapter is a direct prologue for what’s next, then 400 Days is one hell of a start, and season two of Telltale’s The Walking Dead could easily follow in season one’s footsteps, and be one of the best games of the year. Whatever platform you’re playing on, The Walking Dead: 400 Days is well worth the $4.99 asking price. As soon as the credits roll you’ll be dying to begin the experience again. If not, you’ll simply be spending days wondering what could have happened had you made that other decision.

The Walking Dead: 400 Days scores a cool 4/5. If you’re already a fan of Telltale’s Walking Dead series, give it a download immediately. If not, begin with episode one: A New Day, and brace yourself…
