New information has come to light in the never ending craze of Amiibo’s. Our friends over at Nintendo News have gotten a tip from a Gamestop insider, saying that the video game retailer is planning on artificially limiting the supply of the Shulk Amiibo. The email they received, from a source with mixed credibility is as follows.

Hello. You may remember me as the GameStop manager who first tipped you off about the November 21 release date for Smash Bros. I may have another insider story that I feel people should know about. As you likely know, GameStop will be exclusively selling the Shulk amiibo next year. From what I’ve heard, we will only be getting enough amiibo to exactly match the number of pre-orders—no more, no less. The idea is to keep the figure rare, increasing its market value and driving up demand. Then, several months later, we will receive a second shipment to sell as “used” for a marked-up price.

Please remove my name from the report—I could get fired for leaking this.

Cheers,

[Name withheld]

If this IS the case, then it’s no surprise, what with Gamestop and it’s record with Xenoblade.

I haven’t mainlined the Amiibo’s yet, though that may change when I get my Wii U this Friday. Our fearless leader and my fellow Geekscape Games pundits have all taken the first hit and are chasing that purple dragon. The metaphor will be complete if they ever release a Spyro Amiibo.

Don’t the Gamestop CEO’s have enough money?

Tucker Garborg is a High School student who made this hilarious short film about a kid who is in charge of the concession stand. The following seven minutes is probably the best Wes Anderson movie I have ever seen. Adderall is written, directed and edited all by Mr. Garborg himself!

What wonderful news! Interesting, but still wonderful.

The SyFy Network (It’ll always be Sci Fi to me baby!) is joining forces with David Goyer & Ian Goldberg to create a TV Series based around the doomed planet.

Krypton joins the SLEW of other DC based television shows coming out. Constantine, Gotham, Supergirl, Titans, Lucifer, Arrow, The Flash, iZombie and Global Frequency. Did I name them all? Good.

No word on WHEN the show will air, but this kind of feels like a cash grab at this point. Let’s hope if it’s bad, it dies a quick death.

The information train has left the station and is cruising along at a wicked pace. We got our first taste a week ago, then a series of screenshots were leaked, AND NOW THIS! A TRAILER!

I am getting more and more hype for this everyday. To actually see the characters moving, and talking (just off screen), has got me PUMPED!

Let’s hope this game ships soon!

Be it on purpose or accident, the first of in game screenshots have hit our digital desks, and they look just as I expected them too! They obviously have that “Telltale” (see what I did there?) flair, and the actors likenesses seem to be accurately depicted here.

No word yet on how these accurate depictions will sound, most likely we won’t have the actual actors, but a strikingly accurate simulation.

We still don’t have a release date, but they’re still shooting for end of 2014.

We brought you the leaked, official and the first extended trailer for Avengers 2: Age of Ultron. Now it looks like Marvel is getting extended trailer happy once again! Check out the NEWEST Age of Ultron trailer!

Rarely does a group of creators come together that have as much passion for their product than the team behind COMIX: Beyond The Comic Book Pages.

Way back in April, I met with the creators of COMIX at WonderCon. There they showed me a clip of their upcoming Documentary.

I was instantly impressed, everything felt very candid and the little that I saw of interviews were great. It reminded me a lot of our own Doc of The Dead.

Check out the trailer for COMIX below!

COMIX: Beyond the Comic Book Pages is an exciting new feature film documentary about the world of comic books told through the thoughts and images of the creators, artists, writers, collectors, store owners, independent publishers, and especially the passionate fans who have made it the phenomenon that it is today.

In an update today, Twitch has put the final nail in a very annoying coffin.

It is now against their terms of service for game streamers to wear clothing that is sexually suggestive.

Wearing no clothing or sexually suggestive clothing – including lingerie, swimsuits, pasties, and undergarments – will most likely get you suspended, as well as any full nude torsos*, which applies to both male and female broadcasters. You may have a great six-pack, but that’s better shared on the beach during a 2-on-2 volleyball game blasting “Playing with the Boys.”

* If it’s unbearably hot where you are, and you happen to have your shirt off (gents) or a bikini top (ladies), then just crop the webcam to your face. If your lighting is hot, get fluorescent bulbs to reduce the heat. Xbox One Kinect doesn’t zoom? Move it closer to you, or turn it off. There is always a workaround.

Gone are the live streams of girls playing games with two push up bras and a high angled camera. Gone are the days of Mega64 dancing around in their underwear. You will both be missed.

This is the second major update to their ToS that appears to be a push from their new Amazon overlords. The first being streamers need to fully disclose if anything they are doing is part of a paid campaign.

I feel these are both great moves that legitimatizes live streaming as a viable business, while not pandering to mouth breathing neckbeards.

Hot off the digital Presses is this fantastic news!

Sherlock star, and Tumblr heartthrob, Benedict Cumberbatch has just been cast as Doctor Strange in the upcoming film adaptation of the Marvel sorcerer.

With filming set to begin in May of 2015, fans were starting to get a little anxious as to who would play the cult favorite. Early rumors also say that this is NOT going to be an origin film, and as a fan of Strange PhD I cannot be more on board with that decision.

Doctor Strange is being directed by Scott Derrickson and is written by Jon Spaihts.

Hot off the presses from Shout!Factory is the next in the Equestria Girls franchise. The full title. “My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic: Equestria Girls: Rainbow Rocks”, was how you say, a bit long to put in the title of this review.

In case you aren’t in the know, “Equestria Girls” is a spin-off film series of the now HUGELY popular “My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic”. In these films there exists and alternate dimension similar to that of MLP’s Canterlot. This is not a dimension of sight or sound, but of hands and feet! That’s right, Ponies are People too!

The first film had our lead character, Twilight Sparkle, traveling through to this alternate dimension to stop the plans of an evil doer. Rainbow Rocks pretty much starts out the same, but this time there are THREE bad guys!

The story, much like the first one, is what it is. A nice feel good story with valuable lessons for the young crowd. For the older crowd, such as myself, it’s more of an elaborate fan service. Seeing all of our favorite characters human counterparts put a huge smile on my face throughout the entire film. The “adult” references throughout were always met with an audible laugh.

Equestria Grils Rainbow Rocks Daft Punk Rarity
This was hands down my favorite shot from the film.

The entire goal for our protagonists in “Rainbow Rocks” was to sing a song that would counter the evil magic from the films villains, The Dazzlings.

Hands down the best part of “Rainbow Rocks” was the amazing soundtrack. The entire plot revolves around a Battle of The Bands. The show’s composer, Daniel Ingram, freaking killed it. 10 all new original recordings from Daniel really stole the show (how many stage puns do you think I can get into this review?).

The Blu-Ray edition comes with both the Blu-Ray and DVD copy, as well as a code for the digital download version. The bonus features are a tad slim, but it is to be expected for a childrens release. The one feature I was extremely grateful for was the audio commentary. A gaggle of the films crew were present. Writers, producers, editors, animators. The entire crew was well represented. I really appreciated that it was obviously a group of people that loved their job, it wasn’t “dumbed down” for a younger audience. They pointed out small minute animation details that you wouldn’t normally have caught. It was a joy listening to it.

Final Thoughts

“Rainbow Rocks” was a must see for me this year. After the surprise that was the first Equestria Girls movie (it really superseded all my expectations), I knew that the sequel would have only improved on everything. Boy was I right.

The bonus features are lacking. Besides the audio commentary you get three sing alongs and the eight prequel shorts. The audio commentary and the fact that you get what amounts to three copies of the film more than makes up for it.

This is a must have for any MLP fan, young OR old.

You can get your hands on your own copy of “Rainbow Rocks” NEXT WEEK! It hits store shelves October 28th. There are some retailer specific bonuses too! If you get the DVD version at Target, Walmart or KMART you will get a Rainbow Rocks bracelet, Music CD or A Backstage Pass respectively.

SCORE: 4/5

Way back in 2011, Nike made a seriously limited number of the highly sought after light-up high tops from Back to The Future II, and auctioned them off with all the proceeds going to the Michael J. Fox charity. Pairs of the shoes went for hundreds of dollars, and all 1,500 got gobbled up quickly, quickly killing any dreams of us regular folks of snagging a pair…UNTIL NOW!

Universal Studios has teamed up with HalloweenCostumes.com to release a pair of the sneakers to consumers for $99! They don’t self lace or anything, but they do light up via a rechargeable battery!

The rumours turned out to be true. The video game sensation, Minecraft and it’s company Mojang are to be acquired by Microsoft. Announced on their official Business reports blog this morning.

The Mojang team will join Microsoft Studios, which includes the studios behind global blockbuster franchises “Halo,” “Forza,” “Fable” and more. Microsoft’s investments in cloud and mobile technologies will enable “Minecraft” players to benefit from richer and faster worlds, more powerful development tools, and more opportunities to connect across the “Minecraft” community.

Under the terms of the agreement, Microsoft will acquire Mojang for $2.5 billion. Microsoft expects the acquisition to be break-even in FY15 on a GAAP basis. Subject to customary closing conditions and any regulatory review, the acquisition is expected to close in late 2014.

Available across multiple platforms, “Minecraft” is one of the most popular video games in history, with more than 100 million downloads, on PC alone, by players since its launch in 2009. “Minecraft” is one of the top PC games of all time, the most popular online game on Xbox, and the top paid app for iOS and Android in the US. The “Minecraft” community is among the most active and passionate in the industry, with more than 2 billion hours played on Xbox 360 alone in the past two years. Minecraft fans are loyal, with nearly 90 percent of paid customers on the PC having signed in within the past 12 months.

Microsoft plans to continue to make “Minecraft” available across all the platforms on which it is available today: PC, iOS, Android, Xbox and PlayStation.

$2.5 BILLION is a lot of cheddar for ostensibly one game.

Hot on the heels of the official announcement is another, more somber one. Notch is leaving the company. Notch wrote on his personal blog:

I don’t see myself as a real game developer. I make games because it’s fun, and because I love games and I love to program, but I don’t make games with the intention of them becoming huge hits, and I don’t try to change the world. Minecraft certainly became a huge hit, and people are telling me it’s changed games. I never meant for it to do either. It’s certainly flattering, and to gradually get thrust into some kind of public spotlight is interesting.

[…]

As soon as this deal is finalized, I will leave Mojang and go back to doing Ludum Dares and small web experiments. If I ever accidentally make something that seems to gain traction, I’ll probably abandon it immediately.

Considering the public image of me already is a bit skewed, I don’t expect to get away from negative comments by doing this, but at least now I won’t feel a responsibility to read them.

The foreseeable future Minecraft doesn’t appear to be going anywhere, and with Microsoft in control you can bet your god damned ass you are going to be seeing much more of it. Minecraft movie? TV show? Minecraft in my Halo?

What are your thoughts on this acquisition?

One of the highlights for me this year was sitting down with Carsten Boserup from Zero Point Software to talk about their amazing looking game Interstellar Marines.

Interstellar Marines and the team at Zero Point software have been through a lot. Development on the game started almost ten years ago and began on the Unreal Engine. Due to licensing costs and downsizing, the team changed over to the Unity Engine and the team was reorganized. The finished product is now approaching, and it appears all the hard work over the past 10 years, and all of the hardships Zero Point has gone through through have finally paid off.

Interstellar Marines takes place in the “believable future”. The devs wanted to make a game that blends realism and gameplay, where you have to rely on your CO-OP team. Players will take up one of four positions in a squad of, well, Interstellar Marines. This game isn’t your normal FPS, as you have to pay attention to your surroundings and really coordinate your movements with your team. An entire squad of guys with sniper rifles, or running off on your own is going to get everyone killed, and trust me when I say that this game is going to kick your ass.

The title will be released in four parts; the Prologue takes place at the training grounds for the ITO (future NATO), this serves as the games tutorial and multiplayer component. The campaign will take place over three separate story lines dubbed “The Trilogy”. Players will find themselves out exploring the universe encounter genetically modified creatures while humanity is on the leading edge of first contact.

The game features an interesting RPG like mechanic with what Zero Point calls their “Suit System’. Players will be able to level up their characters building a unique gameplay experience. Levels are procedurally generated and you will need to explore them multiple times, and objectives can be taken in any order the players wish.

Interstellar Marines is currently on Steam Early Access, and the COOP will be added this week on September 18th!

Stay tuned for my hands on with the single player and CO-OP experience later this month!

It was up, then taken down, then up again and taken back down. It looked as if the trailer for the upcoming Daft Punk biopic, Eden, wasn’t sure if it wanted to be released.

Well now its finally up for good, so we can bask in all of it’s glory!

Starring Arnaud Azoulay and Vincent Lacoste as the Daft Punks themselves, the film follows the duo’s career from the very beginning.

Already screening at the Toronto Film Festival, the film has gotten high marks so far. No world wide release date has been announced, but you can be sure music junkies from all over will be already in line.

One of the highlights of my trip was getting a hands on with the most unique Indie game at PAX Prime 2014, Tetropolis.

Now you may be asking yourself, “How on EARTH can NextGen Pants combine two drastically different games?”, well I’m about to tell you!

You play as a discarded Tetromino. You came out into the world destined to be a complete, four square piece. Aspirations of being a T or an L, but alas out of the machine you were missing your last cube. You are quickly discarded, some unseen force deems your garbage. You fall into a pit of other Tertrominos. This is when the cinematic ends and the player takes over.

I quickly got my bearings and moved forward, finding a lone cube piece sitting there. I rolled over and soon the main character was born. Born of two less main characters. This is where the demo and the journey began.

Tetropolis plays like your standard Metroidvania style game. Going through levels, finding power ups and items, and back tracking with said new power ups to get a little bit further. If you can’t figure it out by it’s name, think Metroid and Castlevania.

The levels themselves are actually giant Tetrominos that, if the player reaches a control room, can move and rotate them around in order to solve puzzles, get around obstacles, or reach the levels boss fight.

The controls are very easy to learn. Left stick rolls your Tetromino around like a ball, while the right control stick rotates you in place. A button makes you jump, X uses abilities, and Y transforms you to other shapes you acquire.

The version I played at PAX, you can play too yourself! Head on over to their Kickstarter Page and get the demo RIGHT NOW for free!

The atmosphere was really great, I had a strong Oddworld/dystopian vibe going while I played it. Ominous machinery and propaganda posters adorned the level. The Developers said that there is going to be a strong narrative throughout the game. They said they wanted it to specifically not be in any one language, that the narrative would move forward just on visuals alone. The one thing you can understand in ANY language is Tetris, and they wanted to have that ubiquitous appeal come through with Tetropolis.

I am personally going to back this game, the little that I got to play on the show floor sold me. It was cute and endearing. Balanced complexity and ease of use very well.

This War of Mine is quite possibly the most important game of our generation. It touches on a subject that hasn’t been touched before in gaming. “In War, not everyone is a soldier”.

http://vimeo.com/88892328f

I got to the 11 Bit Studios booth shortly before my meeting with the head writer, Pawel Miechowski. Another 11 Bit Studios employee got me set up with the game and told me Pawel would come over and meet with me. I started up the demo and was greeted with a randomly generated start. The game is a side scrolling, point and click style pseudo-adventure game. You can choose a survivor character and move them around the map. Double clicking will make you character run, but that will create a bubble of sound around them that enemies will react to. There are points of interaction around the map that you, well, interact with: Wardrobes, doors, cabinets, piles of rubble, various types of furniture, and a workbench.

8b32341fd47a1eb9548819144c3fe7f0

I was greeted with three survivors, each with their own stats. One was an expert salvager,  one was a “good cook”, and another was handy. Of course, they each also had negative attributes assigned to themselves. One of them was slightly sick, while everyone else was tired and hungry. When left alone, the characters would talk with each other about the trials and tribulations of the war. I quickly got the three survivors starting on bettering our house. Clearing rubble, opening doors and cabinets and building some furniture. The day is spent working on your shelter, while the night is spent scavenging. When the clock ran out, it was time to prep my refugees for the night.

I was presented with the night time menu. Each character had to be assigned a job. The three options I had right off the bat where “Sleep. Guard. Salvage.”. I assigned one to each, and then went to the salvage map. Here I could choose between locations that I could scour for materials. I went out to a run down building and proceeded to go from room to room. This is where the atmosphere really shines through. The building was foreboding, and frankly kind of scary. Graffiti adorning the wall outside was a bit…bothersome.

cef307ecd0e5f87b2eed87ad1e88a9b3

Going from room to room, slowly I was so engrossed with what I was doing. The roar of the convention center seemed to vanish as I was focused on getting supplies for my shelter. As I crept through another room, a red circle appeared on the screen. I automatically assumed it was an enemy, and the circle represented noise coming from the upper floors. This is where I really took note of how the player saw things. Everything outside of the players view was blurred and darkened. As I went up to a door to look through the keyhole, a cone of clear vision spread across the room. Walking up to ledges and holes in the ground, a small beam of the players vision shot down through to what was below. As I got to the last room, the noise ultimately turned out to be a small animal, obviously trying to survive like we were. I found a letter in a dresser from a distraught husband, lamenting about his wife’s passing. He noted that they buried the handgun she’d used to kill herself in the back yard. Backtracking through the house, a new item of interest appeared on the ground. The broken gun frame. Something I could fix with gun parts, if I had enough.

Back at the main shelter I dropped off the goods I found, and recanted the nights goings on with the others. One of my survivors had gotten sicker, and another extremely tired. Things were starting to get a bit overwhelming. I crafted a bed with the little wood I had, and found some herbal medicine for my sick character. The day went moreso the same as the first day, and as the night approached I didn’t realized in depth this game was going to get.

Night came and I picked the character who had the least afflictions and sent him to a house. Upon getting to the house I immediately saw that it was occupied. I slowly crept around the inhabitants. Stealing the little supplies they had. I started to feel bad about it, which I guess was an intended effect. I made my way back up from the basement to the main level, and hid as the man of the house walked by, and this is where things got heated. He noticed that the front door was open, and started a thorough search of the home. My hiding space was soon discovered and a fist fight broke out. I defended myself, but had to kill the man. The fight alerted the wife, and she came at me with a knife. Again, I had to defend myself. Immediately I wasn’t that upset with the situation, now I could explore the house freely but my character was fairly hurt. Upon getting back to the shelter my actions at the house became apparent.

War

Upon entering the shelter, my character went on a tirade about how bleak the entire situation was and started to break down about having to murder some people. He now had the “Sad” and “Depressed” status affliction, and the other characters in the home talked about how bad everything had become. It was at this time Pawel came over to see if I was ready for my interview but looking at my face he said “You looked pretty engrossed, I will let you play some more. Come find me when you are ready.”

I played for a few more days and nights. It felt like I was making one step toward progress, and two steps back to a bleak reality. My characters were starving, hurting and falling apart.

Interview

Then back up with Pawel and started asking him my questions.

He told me that the idea of the game came from an article called “One Year In Hell”. The article recounted the tale of a man surviving the Bosnia war from the 90’s. It really showed how in war, it’s not just soldiers on two sides fighting. The people that were just living a normal life up until that point were the biggest victims. After reading the article, him and his team at 11 Bit did a lot of research on the authenticity of the piece.

They wanted to make a game that was very mature, and that focused on serious mature themes. The horrors of wars was an obvious choice. They wanted the game to be fun but still stay grounded in reality. They made the conscious decision not to have the soldiers be from any specific army, making the combatants as ambiguous as possible.

Each character that you can play as will be extremely different from each other. When I asked him how things like murders will affect different people he said “Each character is different. Not only from their abilities, but how they react emotionally. Our AI system is EXTREMELY advanced, and probably one of the most unique features from our game. When someone has to commit and act they don’t like, they will react differently than the next. Things like books, or building a radio from parts is a great way to bring their morale up.” He went on to say that the game has it’s own language. How everything comes together, be it how characters interact with each other or the environment. It has it’s own voice.

The war will eventually end in the game, it’s not an endless survival game. Pawel said “But you won’t know when it will end. Because in the real thing, people ACTUALLY surviving have to survive under the idea that the war will never end. So we wont tell you when it will end, and it will change each time, but it will eventually.”

Final Thoughts

The little I got to play of this game sold me. I sat at the 11 Bit Studios booth for what felt like only a few minutes, but turned out to be almost an hour. Talking with Pawel, I learned how passionate the guys at 11 Bit Studios are about this title. Coming from Poland, a country that has been plagued with war for centuries, they wanted to tell the Western world a story that is rarely told. It touches on the subject of war and doesn’t pull any punches. When playing, and my characters were revolted by the actions they had taken, I was taken aback. Usually in games, when you do something you aren’t “supposed” to do, you either have to reset or get a slap on the wrist. At the most you are penalized points. In This War of Mine, your characters are DEEPLY affected by it and it will carry on with them for a while.

This game is on point to become one of the most important titles of this generation. It grabs you by the collar and forces you to see the side of war that is rarely mentioned.

This War of Mine is slated to be released by end of year and will be available on PC, OS X, Linux, iOS, and Android.

War2

When the trailer for Never Alone came out earlier this year we at Geekscape were blown away. More specifically I was blown away. Living in Alaska all my life, it was really refreshing to see the Alaskan Native culture as the catalyst for a narrative driven game.

Well wandering around PAX sixth floor this year, I was elated to see the team from Upper One Games and E-Line Media had a proud booth setup. I walked up to the booth and introduced myself to the head of PR for E-Line Media, Elziabeth, and I got the full behind the scenes rundown of Never Alone (Kisima Ingitchuna).

The team behind Never Alone worked closely with the Cook Inlet Tribal Council (CITC) to make sure the game was as authentic as possible. They made numerous trips to the Alaskan North Slope to visit tribal elders to show them the product they were working on. The game follows an old Inupiat story about an endless blizzard that is ravaging a small village. In the story a small child decides to go out into the storm to find the source of the storm to stop it. The main character in the story never had a gender, so the team chose to go with a girl, as females are severely underrated in gaming. The art direction is HEAVILY influenced by Alaskan Native culture, and the aesthetic is incredible. You can tell the team working on Never Alone truly cared to represent the Alaskan Natives properly.

Sitting down to actually play the game and I was instantly hooked. You take up the role of Nuna and her Arctic Fox. If you are playing alone you can switch back and forth between them, but the game features full on single screen COOP. Gameplay is simple and each character has their own perks, the fox has the ability to see spirits and use their help in the environment. I played through the short demo they had available and was instantly sold on the game. The gameplay was easy to pick up, but the puzzles were challenging enough that it took multiple attempts at some of the later ones.

Never alone comes out on November 4th on the Xbox One, Playstation 4 and PC for $15. I highly suggest anyone who is a fan of games like Journey to pick this up. It would be a great game to introduce non-gamers to.

Even the most casual internet user is aware of the Ice Bucket Challenge to raise awareness for ALS. Its been a huge phenomenon that has been blowing up our YouTubes, our Instagrams and our Facebooks. Even our fearless leader accepted his challenge!

Well our friends over at Mega64 have excepted their challenge with their normal…flair.

A very interesting topic has come up over the weekend. The entire events and goings on have been collected in this, albeit long, video. If you care at all about video games in the slightest, then I HIGHLY suggest you give this a watch.

http://youtu.be/C5-51PfwI3M

The sites and people implicated in this video are some of the big dogs in the video game journalism industry. It brings up a great topic that needs to be addressed. Accountability and Honesty.

If any of the allegations are true, then we have ourselves a huge problem on our hands. When personal agendas (we here at Geekscape have No Agenda) get pushed through big media outlets, like the ones implicated in the above video, we have a failure of the industry. You as consumers need to keep people like us in check, so that we can accurately cover the topics you hold dear. If this kind of stuff goes on, then you the consumer will be hurt.

One of the interesting things to come of this is the mass censorship of the above video and it’s topic. When it was posted on Reddit’s /r/gaming earlier, it was immediately removed from the page and all the comments deleted. It wasn’t until the video was posted on /r/videos that I found out about the subject. Turns out the head moderator of /r/gaming felt the video was against Reddit’s rules, but the head moderator at /r/videos felt like it was NOT.

Capture2

What is interesting about this, is that the moderator from /r/gaming in question has publicly reached out to Miss Quinn.

1408455472720

Now this isn’t about if she fucked a couple (5) guys. It’s about her using her relationships with people in the media to affect articles and news to profit. To knock out competitors, or people that she deemed “oppressive”. Its about creating a terrible image for females in the video game industry.

Miss Quinn has said that she won’t respond to anything about this above subject because it’s not about “video games”. What I have to say to you Miss Quinn, is you can’t have your cake and eat it too. You’ve vocally taken a stance on things that do NOT directly correlate with gaming, but pick and choose when that topic is valid. You’ve said that this is just a push to crush creativity. This is NOT a push to crush creativity. This is the start of a movement to keep people like me, people like the folks over at Nerd Reactor, the people at Kotaku and others honest.

The Question of The Day

So the question of the day, the dear readers of Geekscape, is what do you think of this whole incident? Please consume the evidence and form your own opinion. We want to hear from you how you feel about the subject of Honesty in Journalism. How do you the readers think we the Press should be held accountable? Please share this post, share the video and propagate the formula. Honesty.

Addendum

I would like to point out that during the writing of my piece, the video from Mundane Matt had been re-uploaded. His take down was the catalyst for the story getting out. It goes back to the start of my article. When corruption in the industry is rampant, you the consumer hurts. Miss Quinn abused YouTubes DMCA take down policy, and will most likely abuse Twitter’s abuse policy in all of this. Her correspondence with the Reddit /r/gaming mod needs to be taken into question as well. His public response thread is full of questions that aren’t getting answered.

Having the second longest title in movie history (only behind The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies), Rainbow Rocks is the second film in the Equestria Girls series. Hasbro’s surprisingly successful attempt at sliding into the doll market, became a quick hit with MLP fans of all ages.

Today we got our hands on the newest poster for the film, along with the amazing announcement that the film is coming to MORE theaters! Still, no Alaska though 🙁

MLP_EG_Poster_rev_print-page-001

MY LITTLE PONY EQUESTRIA GIRLS: RAINBOW ROCKS the movie finds Canterlot High (CHS) hosting a musical showcase, and Rainbow Dash, Applejack, Pinkie Pie, Rarity, and Fluttershy are going to be performing with their new band, The Rainbooms. But when The Dazzlings, a new girl group, arrive at CHS and convince everyone to turn the friendly showcase into a Battle of the Bands, tensions mount between the competing musical acts. A now-reformed Sunset Shimmer realizes that the Dazzlings may not be ordinary girls and are after something far more sinister than just being named Best Band at Canterlot High. The Rainbooms call on Princess Twilight to restore harmony to their world to help them perform a musical counter-spell so that they can win a battle that now determines the fate of the entire school!

I am so freaking excited for this, the last Equestria Girls film really surprised me. All of the charm from the show was brought over to the new story and setting. The characters remained true to their Pony counterparts, and Daniel Ingram really knocked it out of the park with the music. Unfortunately, living up here in Alaska, I have to wait for it to hit DVD. I’m sure it’ll be worth the wait.

Hands down my most favorite thing I got to do at SDCC this year was checking out the newest product from Thrustmaster. The Ferrari 458 wheel addon for their T500RS system is an incredible piece of kit, and honestly a must have for ANY racing fan.

I met up with Michael from Thrustmaster at the Ubisoft booth on the show floor. He gave me a quick rundown of the product. The Ferrari 458 addon for their T500RS system brings a new level of refinement to the system. The familiar Ferrari logo sits in the center of this “Real World” accurate wheel, apropos switches and buttons circle the control column, paddle shifters are within reach, and the whole thing is wrapped in leather.

Michael explained to me that this particular wheel system has had the most thought put into it. This generation has five competing driving games being produced at the same time, which include The Crew and Project Cars. Thrustmaster met with all five developers to create the most ubiquitous driving system ever. He explained that each game has it’s own physics system. How each game transmits how the car on screen reacts to the driving surface and collisions. By joining forces with various game developers, Thrustmaster was able to create a controller that could interpret almost any output data to strong force feedback.

I sat down in a nice bucket seat, and the Ferrari 458 wheel was presented to me along with the T500RS pedals. Michael explained that Thrustmaster has teamed with Playseat in some of their higher end setups to provide the closest to the real thing any gamer could want. The Ubisoft presenter ran me through a quick run down of how The Crew demo worked and I was quickly paired up with three other players in the booth.

T500RS Pedals in the F1 Setup. As I demoed them.

The first demo featured the four of us trying to take down a target. The moment I took off from the start I immediately knew how serious Thrustmaster was with this product. Driving over hills, bumps, road, sand, water and even through fences the wheel reacted differently on each surface. I struggled to keep the wheel under control, and Michael gave me a few pro tips on getting everything under control. The first demo ended and I found myself in last place. The T500RS wheel system really beat me up, and Michael explained that during this demo the wheel was set at it’s lowest sensitivity, and at the highest I probably wouldn’t have made it out alive, obviously joking Michael went on to explain that Thrustmaster had teamed up with colleges around the world for a brand new collegiate F1 racing league. Colleges would use Thrustmaster wheel systems to train their team’s before putting them on the track. Just after my first race of The Crew with the T500RS wheel I knew how it could easily be used in a total simulation environment.

The next demo was a street race, more my style. I quickly entered first and Michael gave me accolade for my use of the brake pedal. He also mentioned that Thrustmaster offered a pedal upgrade for this system that let users adjust the force feedback on the pedals. A few nice drifts and smooth turns later and I found myself at the finish. Our demo had ended.

Leaving the cockpit I instantly wanted more. The Crew was an amazing experience. The world looked beautiful, and coupled with the Thrustmaster T500RS system it felt amazing. I cannot give these two products higher marks. If you have to pick only one driving game this generation make it The Crew, and do yourself a huge favor and snag this racing wheel.

Afterwards, Michael told me about a new gaming league Thrustmaster was starting up this Fall. They wanted to create a new E-Sports gaming league centered around driving games. Fighting and FPS games are highly featured in many tournaments, and games like LoL and DOTA 2 have huge purses. Thrustmaster wants to bring that status to driving games. Gamers can get a hands on experience with the T500RS system and participate in the beginning legs of the first tournament at Gamestops sometime in late August. More details will be released soon from Thrustmaster so be sure to stay tuned to Geekscape Gaming for future updates.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Growing up with a Flight Instructor for a father, and some of the first games I ever played being flight simulators, Thrustmaster was a common name in our household. The company has pedigree, and it really shows with the Ferrari 458 Wheel and the T500RS system. The brushless motor was supremely smooth, but accurately conveyed the different driving surfaces I experience while playing The Crew.

The Crew was one of my most hyped games from E3 previous and this year. What Ubisoft has planned to release seems daunting, but from the short demo I had, I believe they can do it.

The wonderful world of Comic Con has just passed us by, but the effects from the convention will stay with us forever.

One of the huge presences at this years SDCC was History Channels Vikings. An amazing combination of Drama and History. Season 3 is already started principle filming and what we learned at the press roundtable really makes us excited.

First up was Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel) and Rollo (Clive Standen)

Ragnar and Rollo!

What can we expect from Season 3?

Travis: Paris is a huge part in the upcoming season, we’ve done the England thing, setting up the farm. Ragnar wants to get back to raiding.

Is there anything specific that you are excited about in the new season?

Travis: I’m glad a lot of the family stuff is out of the way, he was all about exploring and got caught up in the family stuff back home. Now he gets to get back to what he loves to do.

Are you surprised by the reaction from the fans? And have the writers written anything for you that has totally shocked you?

Travis: Yeah surprised I guess, but we have a great team at the helm so I guess it’s no surprised the show does pretty well. We haven’t read the last four scripts, so we don’t have any idea whats going to happen in Paris. I’m surprised I haven’t been killed yet.

Clive: We’ve seen some of the concept art, they’re still building Paris, its incredible.  It’s so different from what we’ve seen before and its impressive. Paris is all about the architecture, the castles and structures are impenetrable but Ragnar and his team have managed to get inside. So we get to tell the story of the first raid on Paris. We’ve done our research on it, but Michael hasn’t really told us what to expect.

Has the relationship between you two squared away and will be actually be able to see you together more.

Travis: Yeah we’re together more, but once again the women cause us grief.

Clive: I think what draws us together, and a mutual respect, is that Pagan Christianity thing. There is unrest in the camp with some people not liking the Christians being involved in anything and keeping our Pagan ways. And I think the brothers being brought up the same way, so they have the same beliefs, they have that as a common interest and I think Rollo finds a way of having the Brother’s back. He doesn’t have to share that much with words and they can read eachothers minds.

Travis: And like I said, we go back to the raiding this year more so than all the drama. We’ll be back together on the boat.

When you are on the boat, are you actually on the ocean?

Travis: Yes, and no. We’re on a lot of lakes and in the sea and rivers. Have we shot in the ocean this year?

Clive: No, we filmed on a lake, but we get up on the Irish sea to when we need to get that great landscape behind us. But obviously a lot of raiding is down estuary so we can narrow it down. We haven’t had to break out the gimbal, its a big hydraulic boat that goes up and down like a ride, but we haven’t had to get it out from the garage yet.

Audiences of today, most people would have no idea of the concept of “roughing it”, but there is something about stories like yours where you exist in a world where everything is a struggle.

Travis:  I think the appeal is the relationships, the same kinds of relationships go on between people. Yeah it is a struggle, its such a different life, we’re all used to this life. Its intriguing to people, a kind of escapism.

Clive: Ragnar has a line at the beginning of season 1 where he says “All things begin and end with stories”, and thats what I love about our show. It really is going back to the basic of storytelling, not just in a drama TV series, but actually the vikings are telling stories. There is no television, there is no Facebook, there is no way of sharing than sitting be the fire and telling stories. The first time something it was told it was a story about a snake, but seven generations down the line its a story about a giant serpent that bites it tail and wraps itself around the world. That fascinates me, the Chinese whispers of things, the hearsay and how legends are created.

What is it like going home after living in the world of The Vikings, and going back into the world of The Vikings.

Travis: I’ve got a pretty good groove going. We’ve got a great crew. It’s the same crew so nothing changes, we’re all really close and the sets are always there.

Clive: Well I’ve got three children to go home too, so I have to somehow leave Rollo at the door. I got into acting to draw attention away from myself, instead of drawing it towards myself. Rollo gives me that perfect chance to do that. I look in my mirror and I don’t recognize myself, its nice to remove all the war paint at the end of the day and step back into the role of Clive at the end of the day.

Travis, when you sat down Alex gave you a little water over the head. Is that retaliation to something you did?

Travis: Hahah, that’s just bad parenting on my part. I’ll get him back, I just thought that was really rude. ALEX! That was really rude!  I’ve got a good practical joke coming up. I’ll get him back.

Are you guys involved in the creative process at all? As your characters develop do you ever think “He’d act a certain way in this situation or wouldn’t really act this way”.

Travis: No, not really. Michael writes so well, and he’s seen how we act in scenes and really picks up on it, and writes the characters in a certain way. He’s a very talented man.

Clive: Well its a really funny thing. You get some actors that say “My character wouldn’t do that”, and thats bullshit. The writers told you have to do that, and you have to find a way to do that. There is always a way, and that keeps you on your toes as an actor. In a long running series where you don’t see the scripts right away you have to be able to react.

Next we sat down with Alexander Ludwig (Bjorn) and Katheryn Winnick (Lagertha)

Lagertha and Bjorn

Can you tell us what the water over Travis’s head meant?

Alex: I promise I’m not a total dick, you don’t understand. Thats just the relationship we have. Haha. I just realized it must be tough for you (Katheryn) with all of us.

So tell us about Season 3.

Katheryn: Season 3 is bigger and better than the last two. You’ve heard the rumors about Paris, and you will be seeing a lot of new characters coming on board. With the existing characters, their dynamic has changed. For example Lagertha and Bjorn’s relationship has changed, as Mother and Son. You will see every character have their own arcs, ups and downs, all within ten episodes. That is the genius of Michael Hirst’s writing.

How has your relationship changed with Ragnar, with the two wives?

Katheryn: Thats a good question. I think…it’s really hard for a husband to see his exwife come into power in her own right and not need her anymore. You’ll have to ask Travis, it has to be challenging. Do they still have that love for each other? Maybe. We do touch upon it in this Season. You’ll see Lagertha change, she’s now an Earl and her status brings a lot of new challenges and struggles. It’s really fun to play and it’s great to watch. She’s a free woman, she can do what she wants and be with who she wants.

Alex: Even her son!

Katheryn: Hahahah, this isn’t game of thrones!

Alex: Hahahah. Well as we were saying earlier, historically, and we really pride ourselves in be as historically accurate as possible. Which is tough, because there is little to go off, obviously some little things have to change. Bjorn, in this Season, you really see him become a man. Before it was a coming of age story, now he’s his own man. She shares the same respect with his Mother and Father now, and they share the same respect with him. They’re more companions if anything. In terms of the rivalry, back then, they were more like friends or like a brother. Close companions. Which is tough because Bjorn is going to want to have his own power soon.

Katheryn: And in history, Bjorn is more famous than Ragnar is.

Alex: Yeah! There is a lot of that being touched on, but at the same time he’s smart. He has a powerful Mother and Father and he is learning as much as possible from them.

You liking the new hair?

Alex: Yeah! I’m really loving it.

Katheryn: You’re rocking it! One of my favorite things is the transformation process when you come on set. When I come on set, we start with the hair. I get the braids and it takes about 30 minutes, and they are absolutely amazing in terms of telling a story. A lot of her personality is told through stuff like her hair.

Alex: Our makeup and wardrobe department is really amazing. I really hope they get recognized for their effort.

Katheryn: What is interesting about this show, compared to others, is there is no records of how the Vikings or the Scandinavians looked. We don’t really know how they looked, or how they spoke. So you have to, and I also really hope it gets recognized for the creative effort that goes into it. A lot of other shows have a reference of how everything looked. Like say a show from the 60’s, or say a fantasy show where they don’t have to conform to anything at all. It’s really fun to see how they bring it all out even down to everyday life.

Do you find yourself learning new things from episode to episode?

Katheryn: *Long phrase in another language*. That was old Norse, I just learned that. Hahahah, I loved it. It’s really challenging, but it’s so fun. We’ll be invading France soon so there will be other languages in there as well. Lagertha is really evolving as a character, you will really see her in a different light this Season. We only get the scripts from episode to episode so I am still dissecting it myself.

You say the characters have changed over the Seasons, especially from the writers points of view, how has your approach to expressing the characters have changed?

Katheryn: It’s a TV show, we don’t have it all figured out. You can discover new sides of your characters personality. We only get two episodes (scripts) at a time, so I have no idea where Lagertha is going to go. Right now we’re shooting 5 and 6, so where she is going to end up in the finale? I don’t know. Which is amazing, cause in life you don’t know where the future will bring. You can see Lagertha is in a different place now. But because it is a TV show, you can explore different layers to the character, and have the freedom to do it for a longer story line. This doesn’t feel like a TV show, it feels like a movie. It’s not formulaic.

You’ve guys have been on really specific journey, and in a weird way the History Channel has been going on a new journey. How have they changed since the start of the show?

Alex: They took a big risk, and they put themselves out there and are really becoming a very credible channel. Before when you asked someone if they wanted to watch the History Channel they’d just be liked “What?!”. This is their first quote unquote “drama”, and I am blown away by how much they’ve put into this. The huge risk they took with it, and I am so proud to be apart of it.

Katheryn: Yeah, and I can’t say this show should be on any other network. If it was on another channel, it would probably be watered down, or prettied up, or too many cooks in the kitchen. They really trust the people they hired in Ireland. And, the Female viewers of the network have skyrocketed.

Alex: It goes to show that when you give your writer creative freedom and trust that they’ll do their job. So many other studios are riding the backs of the writers, and they don’t get the chance to do what they want to do.

Katheryn: What you may not know, is that Michael Hirst writes every episode by himself. He starts in November and writes everything by himself. He’s really comforting to know that your characters are in great hands.

Next up we sat down with the shows writer, Michael Hirst

Michael Hirst

Unfortunately, my recording from this interview didn’t turn out, so I can’t go into the same level of detail as I did with the others.

What Michael did put emphasis on was how important the attack on Paris would be, and having Ragnar start to settle outside Scandinavia. He said how important being historically accurate was to him as a Writer and he put a lot of effort to be as close as possible with the little source material they had. The pride he has for his show is incredible.

Final Thoughts

History is really coming strong with the third Season. They obviously have a great team working on the show and have consistently put out an amazing narrative. I cannot wait to see the show return 2015.

The team over at BioWare have released Part 1 of a series of videos showing off the next in the Dragon Age series. Inquisition hopes to bring the series to the “next-gen’ (current gen) with an expansive open world and smarter AI.

Not having played ANY of the Dragon Age games, I went into this one completely blind. The combat looks “OKAY”, but I hope the character development and the open world will make up for that. Frostbite 3 looks better than ever!

You can get your hands on Dragon Age: Inquisition October 7th on: PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.
