Briefly: Could The Wonderful 101 be the Wii U’s much needed killer app?

The Wonderful 101 is less than a week away from hitting store shelves… at least in Europe and Japan (North Americans will be waiting until mid-September), and Nintendo has just debuted a wonderful launch trailer for the highly anticipated title.

Juan gave us some pretty fantastic coverage of the game during this year’s amazing San Diego Comic-Con, and if his excitement is any indication, The Wonderful 101 is guaranteed to be something special. It’s been some time since I’ve picked up a new Wii U game (though I still really need to get on Pikmin 3), but I will definitely be lining up for this one.

Take a look at the launch trailer below, and let us know if you’re excited!

The next iteration of the CoD franchise, CoD: Ghosts, is just a few months from release. The developers certainly are making a big deal out of this one. The game features real time lighting and advanced fish AI. We all know that the main draw of the game is the online multiplayer, and the guys over at Activision have just released this fancy new trailer.

Now, admittedly I went into this trailer thinking it was going to be the same old shit. But after watching I was pleasantly surprised. It looks like the team over at Infinity Ward is really trying to make the proper next step for their game. The new game modes look really fun, and the Battlefield style destruction should add a new variable to the hectic run and gun. But we all know what the best part of this trailer is, you get to play as a GIRL!

GoD: Ghosts ships out November 5th on PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Wii U and PC.

At the beginning of the week, I was thinking that there hadn’t been a Nintendo Direct conference since E3. Apparently since my mind willed it so, it was soon announced that yesterday’s Direct would take place, but after a two month wait, nearly 30 minutes of news wasn’t enough. It’s safe to say that the next Direct is poised to be “wonderful.”

Tomorrow at 10 AM Eastern and 7PM Pacific, a second Nintendo Direct for the week will play, which will be completely dedicated to the upcoming action title from Platinum Games, The Wonderful 101. The creators of Viewtiful Joe, Okami and Bayonetta have been working on this one since before the Wii U’s launch, so it will be exciting to find out what new information they have to share with the release date drawing closer.

In the mean time, check out our hands on previews of the game from last year’s E3 and at this year’s Comic Con. Be sure to check back tomorrow as we find out even more about what makes this highly anticipated game tick.

The Wonderful 101 is scheduled to hit the Wii U on September 15th.

Following in the footsteps of Skylanders and Disney Infinity, Pokemon Rumble U will see the release of 18 different figures to coincide with the game’s eShop release on August 29th.

While the characters on the toys can be obtained in the main game, (which features all 649 Pokemon to discover, a first for this spinoff series,) the figures can be leveled up throughout the adventure. Previous installments made swapping attacks difficult and didn’t have a level up system, so players were constantly discarding weaker creatures and replacing them with new ones as the game advanced. With the figures, you’ll be able to have a reliable team to fight at your side, but if buying toys isn’t your thing, Rumble U is still fully playable without dropping the extra cash.

As much of a cash cow as Pokemon is, I’m surprised it took this long to make toys around a game that’s literally about Pokemon toys. Each figure will be $4, making the complete set a whopping $64 total. A hell of an investment for a downloadable game that’s less than $20 on its own, but hey, you gotta catch em all, right?

Between the Smash Bros. Miiverse page and the official website, the developers have promised a screenshot every day leading up to the 2014 release of the game. Unless a new character is announced, it’s rare that the shot is anything worth mentioning, but every once in awhile, a new bread crumb will drop that will keep us salivating for more juicy tidbits.

Yesterday was one such day, with a teaser for a potential Pilotwings stage. No, we’re not talking Wuhu Island from Pilotwings Resort, or even the islands from the N64 launch title, Pilotwings 64. It looks like they’re going way back with a stage based on the original game for the SNES. You remember, the game that started as a flight sim and ended up as a rescue mission in a sudden twist that would make M. Night Shyamalan proud? They don’t make them like they used to.

This possible stage reveal was a pleasant surprise. What else will Smash Bros. have in store for us? Stay tuned to Geekscape and you’ll find out as soon as we do.

Today’s Nintendo Direct has made it official: Luigi will be making his big return to the fighting ring in the upcoming Super Smash Bros. game for Wii U and 3DS. Joining Captain Olimar as the newest veteran to be confirmed, the green clad plumber is sure to bring his unique brand of offense with him. While I’m sure this comes as a surprise to no one, it’s worth mentioning that his move set from the screenshots so far look identical to Melee and Brawl, which is fine with me as long as his weird Final Smash is changed to something relevant like his Poltergust.

But this wasn’t all for everyone’s favorite player 2, because it was mentioned that good ol’ Weegee will also be available from the start as a default roster member. All of the previous games made him a hidden fighter, so after getting his own year, it’s clear to see that the little brother is still coming up in 2014.

Celebrate Luigi’s inclusion in Smash Bros. by scrolling through the latest batch of screenshots, then let us know who you want to be announced next!

At the end of this morning’s Nintendo Direct video, Satoru Iwata shared the stage with Isabelle, the incredibly stunning assistant to the mayor in Animal Crossing: New Leaf, and unveiled Animal Crossing Plaza for Wii U. When is it coming, you ask? That’s the best part, because we’ll have to wait for a grand total of… nothing! That’s right, the plaza is available now!

Acting as its own version of WaraWara Plaza, (where Mii’s you come across talk about the latest games they’re playing,) 3DS mayors will be able to use their SD cards on the Wii U to share screenshots, QR codes for those outfits you’ve spent hours making, and discuss villagers with other players. Outside of the plaza, a special Miiverse community has opened up for the series, so Wii U owners can set up all the shady trades they want directly through Nintendo now.

The bad part? The service will only be available until the end of 2014, so soak it up while you can. It has to be a first for a company to announce that they’re dropping support for a feature right after it’s announced, but maybe it’s incentive for all those New Leaf owners to buy a Wii U? Nah, didn’t think so.

Who else can’t wait to WaraWara with their villagers?

Briefly: Nintendo Business Development Manager Dan Adelman announced yesterday that Nintendo is finally bringing eShop purchases to your computers and smartphones.

Although Adelman isn’t “personally directly involved” he has confirmed that you can log into the eShop site, purchase something, and have it download so that when you next sit at your console, it’s ready to use.  This is perfect for casual gamer who aren’t on their system all day (and every day), as it increases the accessability of the games to the players.

All they need now are Android and iPhone apps! Please?

You read that title right. There is currently a petition over at Change.org to get Nintendo of America President, Reggie Fils-Amie, into the next installment of Super Smash Bros.

The Nintendo of America President was shot into video game fame. His wacky catch phrases and ability to not take himself TOO Seriously, has grounded him a large fan base all over the world. Way back at E3 2007 Reggie was brought on stage to do a “Body Check” for Wii Fit and that is when he uttered the most famous of his catch phrases. ” My Body Is Ready”.

In a recent interview on the Jimmy Fallon Show, Reggie was asked by a fan if he would be included in the upcoming Smash Bros Game. He responded simply, but firmly.

You have to ask that to Mr. Sakurai. He’s the producer of the game, it’s his game. But if he wants, my body is ready.

I’ve signed it, so why haven’t you?

Briefly: Following the playable demo from this year’s Comic-Con, Nintendo has debuted a new gameplay trailer for Platinum Games highly anticipated The Wonderful 101.

The new preview showcases plenty of the game’s intriguing heroes and their incredible powers, and gives us a great idea of what to expect when the game launches this September (or earlier, if you don’t live in North America).

Juan gave us some pretty fantastic coverage of the game during last week’s amazing San Diego Comic-Con. If his excitement is any indication, The Wonderful 101 may just be that killer app that the Wii U is desperately needing. Watch the new gameplay trailer below, and let us know if you’re excited!

To say that the downloadable characters released for Injustice: Gods Among Us were contentious would be an understatement. After a generally well received announcement of Lobo, the releases of Batgirl, Mortal Kombat’s Scorpion and Man of Steel villain Zod divided the community amongst people who felt more Batman and Superman characters was overkill, along with a guest character taking a slot in what many assumed was a DC exclusive fighter. But most of all, some were mad because there were still vital pieces of the DC Universe missing, especially Justice League mainstay Martian Manhunter. At EVO, NetherRealm Studios showed they were listening, answering the fan’s request and adding Manhunter to the Injustice cast along with an extra surprise.

The reveal trailer showed Manhunter going against John Stewart’s Green Lantern, displaying some impressive use of his shape shifting and telepathic abilities. Stewart on the other hand, is a new skin for the Hal Jordan version in the standard game, so while his moves are the same, it sounds like the developers were able to secure the Justice League Unlimited voice actor from the animated series for both. It would have been nice to see some new constructs, but then again, I’m happy that Stewart is in at all. Completing the Justice League animated cast on top of a brand new character is better than expected.

Injustice Zatanna

Will Zatanna make the DLC cut?

But the good news doesn’t stop there. Ed Boon recently tweeted that MM and Stewart won’t be the final additions, stating that the next one is a, “BIG fan favorite request!” What this means is anyone’s guess, but the character request polls were led by Zatanna and Red Hood. Considering the backlash towards more Batman characters, I’m guessing Zatanna is getting in. While I personally would be happy with Hood, (or Black Canary and Huntress for that matter,) Zatanna would be a great addition to a roster with a lack of magic users save for Raven.

The moral of the story? Don’t buy season passes!

Martian Manhunter and John Stewart will be available on July 30th for $4.99. Whether or not a second season pass for the new wave of fighters, who the next character will be, and how many characters will be added from here is unknown, but details will be posted as they become available.

A fan-made petition asking to bring the newest Guilty Gear game, Guilty Gear Xrd Sign, has caught the attention of the game’s developer Arc System Works. Earlier this week, the company sent out the following message on Twitter asking Wii U owners to sign the petition if they would like the game on the Nintendo console:

With Nintendo President Saturo Iwata recently admitting that the Wii U needs to gain more momentum and third-party support, this is a an opportunity for Nintendo fans to help bring another established fighting game franchise to the console. At the time of this writing, only 1,472 signatures are needed to reach the 5,000 signature goal. Here’s hoping the all-too familiar heavy metal soundtrack of this anime-styled fighter graces the Wii U in the near future.

The petition can be signed here.

With so many new titles like Mario Kart 8 and Super Mario 3D World taking up all of the attention at Nintendo’s E3 booth, we couldn’t forget about Mario’s green clad brother! After all, it’s officially the Year of Luigi, so what kind of a jerk would I be if I was standing right next to a New Super Luigi U demo and didn’t try it out? This first full fledged expansion campaign is only a day away, and believe me when I say hardcore Mario fans will be in for a challenge.

Luigi U Screen 1

As it was mentioned in previous Nintendo Direct videos, New Super Luigi U is a complete reworking of New Super Mario Bros U. Mario is out and Nabbit is in, giving Luigi his first starring role in a platforming title! Each of the stages from the original has been overhauled, and even the first stage that I played had many more enemies and trickier platforms than some of the harder stages from Mario’s version. Star coins have been placed in some ridiculously hard to reach places, so completionists are going to have their work cut out for them. To top it all off, the usual time limit has been dropped to 100 seconds, so you better get moving!

It’s true that Luigi’s adventure is attempting to be much more challenging, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t new tricks for him to use. What is new to the game is Luigi’s trademark flutter jump. Even when playing multiplayer, Blue Toad, Yellow Toad and Nabbit all have this ability, effectively Luigi-fying the entire cast. Speaking of Nabbit, his ability to ignore damage makes him a popular guy, effectively providing an easy mode. Sure, he can’t use items, but who needs them when you can’t get hurt? The only problem is that like the main game where player one has to be Mario in single player, Luigi has to be player one too. So anyone hopping to take a leisurely stroll through the Mushroom Kingdom as Nabbit are out of luck.

Aside from these features though, everything is the same. Co-op still locks all four players into the screen, making it so players can’t fall too far behind or run too far ahead of each other. You’ll still be flying in squirrel suits, jumping on enemies and saving Peach from the clutches of Bowser and his illegitimate kids. Just this time, it’s much harder… and with 100% less Mario. Is it enough to justify a $20 download? Well, if you love platformers, multiplayer mayhem and a hell of a challenge, New Super Luigi U is looking like a great way to use that point card that’s been lying around.

Luigi U will be on the Wii U eShop tomorrow, June 20th, with a physical release following on August 25th.

When rumors were swirling that Sega had cancelled plans for a Bayonetta 2, fans of action, developer Platinum Games and virtual women in tight clothing continued to hope for the best. Little did anyone know, the outcry to actually getting the game dwarfed the outcry of not getting it, since it was announced that Nintendo was funding the upcoming sequel and would be a Wii U exclusive. Amongst the overreaction of some people not getting the game on “their” system, there were some legitimate concerns. Would Nintendo’s known censorship get in the way of some of the risque elements Bayonetta is known for? Will the action be as tough as other games Platinum has produced? Will there be any forced game pad integration? My time with the game answered all of these questions, and the answers just might win over fans of the original.

Picking up some time after the first game, Bayonetta, a centuries old witch with some killer gun grabbing heels, is still at war with the angels who are looking to end her. The formula remains relatively unchanged as far as combat is concerned. Each section is divided into acts, or “verses.” Players are judged by how fast they finish each verse, how many points they score by comboing, using special torture attacks and finishing moves called “Climax” attacks. Mixing horizontal, vertical and projectile moves shows off some of the cooler aspects of Bayo’s skill set, (I mean, you haven’t seen a kick until it’s from a giant foot made of hair.) Dodging right before taking damage slows time to a crawl, creating an opening for huge damage against multiple enemies. And if these skills aren’t enough for you, playing well fills your “Umbra Climax” bar, which powers Bayo up, giving her a health boost, a reach extension, upgraded power and speed. The combinations are only increased by multiple weapons that can be switched on the fly, like the standard guns and fists, or dual swords in this demo.

Bayonetta 2 Screen 2

The most obvious difference was former rival turned ally, Jeane, joining the fight and fighting side by side with Bayo. While the version I was playing had my partner being controlled by the AI, the person running the demo confirmed with me that there will be a separate co-op campaign so you can run through hordes of enemies with a friend. Since the Wii U is limited to one game pad per console, it’s safe to say that the classic controller will be a must for two player angel slaying, but aside from the optional touch screen control scheme, (complete with tapping enemies to attack, swiping sideways to dodge or sliding up to jump,) the button based style is the same for each.

Co-op isn’t the only surprise found in my brief time as the witch. After being confronted by a massive boss, Bayonetta sprouted butterfly wings and took the battle to the sky. It was surprise moments that broke up the standard game play like these that helped make the original so unique, so this change up was a welcomed change of pace. After hacking away at the behemoth, the demo came to a close with Bayo standing tall.

Bayonetta 2 Screen 1

So in short, fans worried that the core of the game would be lost in transition can rest easy. Bayonetta 2 brings back the challenging, fast paced and seductive action of the original. Thanks to game pad control, co op game play and different scenarios that differ from the standard combat, there’s little fear of the game being a copy and paste job either. So far, this highly requested game is well on its way to matching the reputation that the original earned, and I for one can’t wait to see how it will turn out.

Look for Bayonetta 2, coming exclusively to the Wii U in 2014.

Most of us have been at a party where a game involved watching the TV (Guitar Hero and pretty much any other console game). Sure, gaming is a group activity, but you tend to get sucked in and not notice those around you. Well, Lau Korsgaard has developed a new party game that changes all that. Korsgaard explained it by saying, “Party games are killing the parties, you just stare at the TV”, but this game makes you look at each other. Spin the Bottle: Bumpie’s Party is a super cute game that makes you get active and pushes you to your comfort limit. It reminds us how we need to just have fun and not hold ourselves back.

Here is a pic from their area at the Indiecade booth inside South Hall at E3.

This Wii U game has seventeen mini games that “encourage moving around and being silly” (Korsgaard). See the pictures below to get a sense of what you have to do in the games. You can play with 2-8 players and only need Wii remotes. The game will release in July on the Wii U e-shop as a digital download.

I went back more than once to play with friends while at E3 and had a lot of fun playing! Also, we were all laughing pretty much the whole time. It is entertaining and helps you break out of your shell. This is the perfect game for parties and as an ice breaker!

When Call of Duty: Ghosts was previewed at the Xbox One conference, the aftermath felt like meme central. But between fish AI, “Collar Duty” jokes and lots of love for dogs, there was actually a game in there somewhere. Aside from the usual military shooter game play, the conference promised a weakened America, a new cast of characters and a much more desperate setting. These were all of the qualities I was keeping an eye out for when I stepped into Activision’s Ghosts presentation, and I was happy to walk out with a few surprises.

Ghosts will be the story of two brothers who are recruited by an elite squad of soldiers that tackle missions to protect a crippled United States. Traveling all around the world to locations such as Venezuela, The Caribbean and the deep, dark recesses of San Diego, each location was heavy on action. One mission had the Ghosts repelling down a building while picking off security forces on the way down. Another had them swimming underwater and blowing up a submarine with a torpedo launcher. All of this is made so much better by an obviously improved AI, so let’s hope the days of your team mates standing around looking into the distance while you get pumped full of led are long gone.

COD Ghosts Screen 1

But who cares about the human partners! This game is all about Riley, the service dog that stole the show at the game’s reveal. What seemed like a simple squad member turns out to be so much more. In a dog focused stage, the main characters were able to give voice commands to their pet for various tactical functions. What’s even better is the game showed players taking direct control of Riley as he maps out paths, checks to make sure corners are safe with his back mounted camera and can even stealth take down enemy soldiers. Once the coast is clear, control comes back to the boring old humans to shoot stuff up. BUT… Riley was also seen being sent into rooms to ambush enemies and trigger breaches. On these sections alone, I’m more than excited to bury terrorists with an actual dog.

This is all framed with an overhauled graphics engine, including displacement mapping which makes terrain look even more realistic. New weapons include an underwater machine gun that’s based on real military tech, and more new guns are sure to follow. Multiplayer wasn’t shown in this demo, but as long as Call of Duty is in the title, you can expect plenty of multikills, upgrades and airstrikes when you take the fight online.

COD Ghosts Screen 2

All in all, Ghosts seems like overhauling the story, the settings and adding a dog of all things might be the next step in the evolution of the series. I know that nothing I write will help or hinder this game’s ability to sell tens of millions of copies, but I’m more excited for Ghosts than I’ve been for a COD game in a long, long time.

Call of Duty: Ghosts is coming to the PS4, Xbox One, Wii U, Xbox 360, Playstation 3 and PC in November.

When Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure was first released nearly two years ago, it became a mega hit with both gamers and children alike. It wasn’t uncommon for games to get toy lines to tie in with the latest releases, but making the toys essential to playing the game was the key to a new cash cow. A year later, Skylanders: Giants added new characters, including the huge Skylanders that the game was named for. But from a game play perspective, it took the safe route, with game play and level design that felt like a copy/paste from the original. I was expecting much of the same when I got to check out Swap Force, the upcoming third Skylanders sequel that promises to add characters with swappable parts. But once I was able to see the game in action, there are a lot of big changes coming to Skylands, which left me pleasantly surprised!

In Skylanders: Swap Force, portal masters are called upon to summon Spyro and friends once again to prevent the evil master, Kaos, from corrupting a volcano with magical powers. This time around, Vicarious Visions, developers of the 3DS versions of Skylanders, have been given lead development duties in the console department. As you would guess from the title, the main feature of Swap Force is the ability to swap parts between the newest set of characters, changing their attacks and elemental properties in the process. The new guys include Night Shift, an undead boxer, Free Ranger, a storm powered chicken and Stink Bomb, a ninja skunk. Swapping their top and bottom halves create new versions of these newcomers to play with, like Free Bomb or Night Ranger. Each half stores data separately, so the upgrades made to each half will be carried over if you mix and match parts with your friends. In addition, swapping is necessary to open new elemental doors that require two elements to open. If you don’t want to buy the new swappable characters, fear not! Playing two players and using one of each element will open the doors just as well.

Skylanders Swap Force Screen 1

What you DO need the new characters for however, are the recently added Swap Force Zones. Each bottom half is associated with a type of movement, ranging from climbing, teleport and rocket zones for example. Opening these doors triggers mini games that are unique to each type, which rewards players with bonuses for completing them. Speaking of rewards, in addition to the hidden treasures and hats from the previous games, new map pieces can be discovered, unlocking bonus areas in the process. It was confirmed that these maps will replace the level based figurines, so gone are the days where you would have to spend close to $30 on sets in order to play a half hour stage.

These are just one of the many positives that Swap Force promises to bring. Running on an all new engine, the game is a huge upgrade visually. The addition of jumping means more platforming elements rather than the previous games that were essentially dungeon crawlers, while combat seems to have more depth with the ability to mix and match attacks. I was largely impressed, but my only concern is how the 3DS version will be affected. With a new developer taking over the handheld version, (which I felt was the superior version of the previous games,) what changes if any would be made for portable Portal Masters? Unfortunately, the 3DS version wasn’t included in my demo, so we’ll just have to wait and see.

Skylanders Swap Force Screen 2

All of the previous figures, including the giants, are backwards compatible in addition to 16 Swap Force and 16 new standard Skylanders. Old favorites like Stealth Elf will be getting new redesigns, but aside from the Swap Force zones, the entire game can be played with your old favorites if you’re low on cash. With all the new figures coming our way, it looks like we’ll need lots of it!

Skylanders: Swap Force is scheduled for Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U, PS4 and Xbox One this fall.

Namco Bandai wasn’t short on Pac Man news at this year’s E3 convention. In addition to the TV show, toy line and video game that were announced, two retro titles are also coming for old people like me. Pac Man Championship Edition DX + and Pac Man Museum look to bring us back to the glory days of the ghost munching icon in both new and familiar ways.

As most of you could probably figure out from the title, Championship Edition DX + is an expanded version of the wildly popular HD Pac Man game that hit the PSN and Xbox Live arcade a few years back. For those unfamiliar, CE put players in timed Pac Man boards where giant waves of ghosts could be eaten in rapid succession for huge point bonuses. Eating half of the board would unlock a fruit, which would respawn dots after being eaten. In DX, bombs can be used to knock away enemies when you’re cornered, which is easy to do when the game goes into slow motion when in danger. DLC maps include classic Namco skins, including Dig Dug and Rally X, changing Pac Man and the ghosts into characters from those games. Coming this summer to Windows 8, Steam, Xbox 360 and PS3, leaderboard chasers will know which game to add to their queue once its released.

_bmuploads_2013-06-11_3012_cedx_rallyx_02_26153-1.nphd

In Pac-Man Museum, many of the classic games spanning decades of history will be collected into one package. Announced so far are Championship Edition, Classic and Battle Royal, the latter of which was only released in arcades. This game looked the most exciting of all, since it features 4 different Pac Men who had to eat ghosts as well as each other. Each power pellet makes Pac Man grow in size, allowing him to eat anyone and anything else that’s smaller than him. Coming to the PS3, 360, Wii U and 3DS, it looks like our retro fix will be covered in this Pac Man collection.

Between these two titles, that’s a ton of Pac we’ll get to play. Between these games and the TV show, it looks like we’ll all be getting real familiar with the character once again. Look out for both these games in the coming months.

Since Square-Enix took over many of Eidos’ properties, few have had as much critical success as Deus Ex: Human Revolution when it was released in 2011. This revival of the influential series brought non liner action back to a first person genre that’s used to being about shooting first and asking questions later. Adding the expertly woven story and the customizable abilities, and you had a game that pleased many of the gamers who played it. When a director’s cut was announced, I knew this wouldn’t be a game to miss, so I hacked into Square Enix’s system to see what this Wii U offering brought to the table.

As you would expect from a director’s cut, the game itself is relatively unchanged. As Adam Jensen, an officer who has been enhanced with numerous augmentations, he is tasked with taking down a terrorist organization by any means necessary. Players will still be able to use stealth, guns or a mix of both to accomplish their mission while aided by upgradable augmentations to make Adam unique. With so many options, it’s very likely that one person’s character will be completely different from another’s.

Deus Ex DC Screen 1

New to the director’s cut are a slew of abilities and features. Playing with the Wii U tablet made the menus much easier to access, so being forced to flip through pages of options has been simplified to a simple tap of the screen. Adam can now throw back grenades, scan the area by lifting the Wii U game pad and pointing it at the screen, (making it easier to find items and enemies,) and tackle new stealth and hacking challenges. The extra missions from the DLC have been seamlessly implemented into the story, making the overall experience longer. These are accompanied by new achievements and eight hours of developer commentary that are scattered throughout the game. Even veterans of Human Revolution will be caught off guard by the reworked maps and boss fights, hoping to keep even the most seasoned players on their toes. And if you suck at the game? Well you’re covered too, because a digital version of the strategy guide is built into the game! The best news? You’ll be able to go back with all of your upgrades with the added New Game Plus, letting players blast through for alternate endings like a super powered boss!

Deus Ex DC Screen 2

During E3, it was announced that Human Revlolution Director’s Cut will also be coming to Xbox 360 and PS3, so there’s no excuse not to give this game a try, especially if you missed it the first time. I was pleasantly surprised by the original release, and I can’t wait to see how well these new features play out in the full game!

Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director’s Cut is scheduled to be released later this year.

Yesterday’s Smash Bros reveal trailer had the internet exploding with excitement with the reveals of Mega Man and Villager. If you were online at all yesterday, it was impossible to escape the news. But what if I were to tell you that there was one more character that Nintendo neglected to introduce? A character from one of the highest selling franchises in the company’s history? One that is at the peak of human conditioning, which is needed to go toe to toe with Nintendo’s best?

Then what if I were to tell you it’s the Wii Fit Trainer?

Yes, the personal trainer who would sleepily walk players through weight training and yoga poses is heading to the fight, appropriately using exercise inspired moves to attack. From arm-leg extensions to push-ups… hoola hoops to downward dogs. My anticipation for the character went from “WTF” to “OMG” within the short, minute long reveal. I just wish her Final Smash used the Balance Board in some way, but at least he’s apparently in the background of a Wii Fit themed stage!

If nothing else, her reveal trailer is one of the most hilarious things I’ve ever seen. Watching Kirby, Link and Mario trying to do a tree pose had me rolling! Check her out below and let us know if you think she’s an appropriate addition to the anticipated cast!

After years of anticipation, Super Smash Bros was finally revealed for 3DS and Wii U. Between the Animal Crossing villager and Mega Man joining the cast, if you are a Smash fan and weren’t jumping out of your seat at these reveals, then you have no soul!

BUT!… with all of the excitement floating around at these monster reveals, it was easy to miss some of the more subtle hints at the changes coming to the popular fighter. After hitting repeat more times than Selena Gomez, there are tons of smaller reveals hidden throughout the three minutes worth of video. Let’s take a look back and see what we can spot!

Once the 3DS version comes on screen, notice how all of the levels are based off of portable games, (Ocarina of Time 3D, Spirit Tracks, Mario 3D Land and Nintendogs for example,) whereas the Wii U version only had console stages. Does this mean each version will have separate stages, or was this just to signify that one was portable and one was a home console release?

Speaking of Spirit Tracks, Toon Link is seen in his conductor outfit at the front of the train. For some fighting games, characters in the background signify that they won’t be playable. Does that mean Toon Link is out? Or a console exclusive character if the train stage is indeed 3DS exclusive? Or will he just disappear from the background if he’s being used?

Pit from Kid Icarus made his Smash debut in Brawl, but since then, he’s received a new game with so a weapon loadout so huge it would make Borderlands jealous. Problem is, none of those weapons were represented aside from the bow. Thankfully, that’s changing, because at 1:17, Pit can clearly be seen using the Upperdash Arm, which obviously wasn’t in the last entry. As a huge fan of Uprising, this was one of my biggest requests, and I’m glad to see Pit getting an upgrade.

Pit’s power of flight also looks changed, with a diagonal jump instead of a continuous flying ability that starts straight up. If this is the case, it looks like our favorite angel might have tons of new tricks. The big question is: will this move set be from the ground up or will it integrate his old moves? And if he is brand new, what happens to his old move set? I’d hate to see it disappear, but I can’t realistically see another slot being taken up by say… Dark Pit just so the old moves can come back, though I wouldn’t  be opposed to it.

Samus seems to have a suit of armor closely resembling her Other M suit. Her Final Smash also seems to let her aim a small amount compared to the last game where it just went straightforward. Huh… I wonder if she’s going to have to ask for permission before she can use it?

Donkey Kong’s spinning punch that he’s had since the first game looked tilted. Has the classic move been tweaked?

Bowser was seen doing a few new normal attacks, including a low drop kick. Seems like he’s getting a move makeover as well, which is fine since he was exactly the same in the last two games.

Many of the fights are taking place in what appears to be a Skyward Sword stage. Combining this with the Spirit Tracks and Gerudo Valley stages, and that’s at least three new Zelda stages between the two versions. What can I say? The series is popular!

Another stage is what looks like a boxing ring. Is this simply the new Battlefield and Final Destination stage that abandons stage gimmicks for a flat battleground meant for straight up battles? Or is this hinting at the inclusion of another franchise down the line? Here’s hoping for Little Mac!

The Animal Crossing Villager’s move set makes him seem oblivious that he’s even fighting. He’s seen using his Balloon Fighter hat to fly, dropping bowling balls, cutting down trees, digging holes and even grabbing projectiles and putting them in his pocket. He’s already looking like one of the more interesting characters move wise. I can’t wait to try him out!

Mega Man’s reveal had a few peculiarities of its own. First, his multiple boss moves were featured, but will they all be special moves like we’re used to? Most likely, they’re integrated both into his normal and special attacks, but it’s still worth mentioning.

Mega’s reveal was ushered in with the phrase, “Mega Man joins the battle!” The previous games used the phrases, “joins the Melee” and “joins the Brawl.” Since I doubt the games will be simply titled Smash Bros Wii U and Smash Bros 3DS, what are the chances that the final title will be Smash Bros BattleSince Villager had a different phrase, I’m almost positive this won’t be the case, but it would be a good way to sneak it in if this were to become the name.

When Mega Man dies, rather than the usual flash that accompanies a fall, his trademark explosion triggers instead. This matches his obvious NES style movement, including his idle pose, his jump and his appearance while taking damage.

Rush is seen using his Rush Coil ability. I’m guessing this is Mega Man’s Up-B attack that helps him spring back up, (much like Sonic.) Will Rush be integrated into any of his other moves?

Right at the end, the trailer teases Mega Man going up against the Yellow Devil boss. While this confirms at least one third party boss, does this mean the return of a single player mode like Subspace in Brawl? Is this simply an event challenge for the Blue Bomber? Or am I over-examining it and Yellow Devil is a stage hazard?

So after meticulously watching the video over and over again, this is the best that I’ve got. Are any of my observations off? Did you find any of your own that I missed? And how awesome is it that Pit has near limitless potential with an Uprising themed move set!? All these questions just make the wait going into 2014 that much harder! You know the drill. Watch the trailer and let us know below!

If there’s a non-Zelda game that I’m looking forward to the most on the Wii U, it’s a Mario Kart title, which Nintendo announced this morning in the form of Mario Kart 8. Just like any classic Mario Kart title, Mario Kart 8 features a big lineup of Mario characters (each with their own personalized karts) and brand new race tracks (each with their own hidden passageways and secrets). What’s new this time around, beyond the beautiful HD graphics, is the inclusion of the motorcycles from the Wii version, the gliders and submarines from the 3DS version, and a brand new kart: the hovercraft. And the hovercraft comes immediately handy with the arrival of levels in which you’ll find yourself driving on the sides of the walls and even upside down on the ceiling.

In the 3 tracks that I played in my short time with the game, Mario Kart 8 seemed like more of the same. For gamers who had grown tired of the same mechanics by Mario Kart 7, there’s not a whole lot new here, other than new takes on traditional courses like the Ghost Manor, the seaside town from Mario Sunshine and Treetop Terrace. Yes, driving on the ceiling and walls can be very cool, but the rapid change in screen orientation and super loud HD graphics can give you a sense of sea sickness after awhile. The nice lady demoing the game for Nintendo said she was starting to feel sick after just watching the gameplay. There also didn’t appear to be any new power ups that I could use, not that I consider the classic Mario Kart in any way broken. I’m a big fan of every iteration of the game and will be picking this up day one.

WiiU_MarioKart8_imageP01_E3

The game can be played on the Wii U gamepad in two ways, either using the thumb stick for steering similar to the Gamecube controller, or with the built in motion controls similar to Mario Kart Wii. And you can switch controls in the middle of the game. The other use of the pad is pretty hilarious: there’s a horn button in the middle of the pad that you can use to honk your horn and cause the other drivers to turn their heads. I caused one fender bender ahead of me between two computer controlled characters in order to get back into first place.

All in all, there’s still a lot to be seen. The three courses on display weren’t final versions and were too short, with only two laps apiece and not a lot of variation in laps (the second time through the Ghost Mansion, portions of it were underwater). That being said, my time with the game on the crowded floor was also too short, and I look forward to playing the game this Winter when it is released. Hopefully, Nintendo keeps up their strong recent history with online gaming support, as this is going to be a lot of fun to play across the Miiverse. The dream of additional downloadable tracks (including classic tracks) is also one that I keep having and hopefully this is the version of Mario Kart that brings it to reality!

How’s everyone liking all this pre-E3 news so far?

Via GameTrailers, Travellers Tales has just released an awesome new trailer for the upcoming Lego Marvel Super Heroes. The game has been kept under wraps for quite some time, with only small peeks and teasers being revealed. This new trailer gives us a much better look at the game, including some major plot elements. I’m unbelievably excited for this title.

Take a look at the new trailer below, and let us know what you think! Stay tuned for more E3 coverage throughout the expo!

The original Mighty Switch Force from the 2D platforming masters at WayForward was one of the early examples of why the 3DS eShop was worth being excited for. The game’s popularity would drive it to receive free DLC in the form of new stages and a Wii U port, but now it’s clear the game is too hot for its own good.

Which is why Mighty Switch Force 2 has Officer Wagon playing firefighter in the newest trailer. Bringing back the 2D pluzzle/platforming that made the original a hit and blending it with new water mechanics in place of the straightforward blasting of old, this game has the potential to build on an already great game. Of course, the popular switching mechanics are back, bringing blocks to the foreground and background to solve puzzles. I’m glad to see the game sticking with what works. After all, it’s not the first sequel in the “Mighty” franchise for nothing.

Is trading in the police badge for a firefighter uniform the right way to go? Check out the newest trailer and decide for yourself.

During the last Nintendo Direct presentation, the news broke that Sonic the Hedgehog’s newest game would be exclusive to Nintendo platforms, which will be the first of a four game exclusive deal. Details on Sonic: Lost Worlds were slim aside from this announcement and two vague screenshots, but that all changed today.

Notably missing is Sonic’s long time nemesis, Dr. Eggman, (Robotnick for the 90’s kids out there,) seemingly replaced by a new band of villains known as the Deadly Six. With a brand new set of abilities, the blue Hedgehog has more than enough tricks up his sleeve, (gloves?) to combat this new threat.

So far, I’m keeping a cautious optimism about the game. Sonic Colors, the last Nintendo exclusive title in the franchise was one of the best Sonic games in years, and the multi platform Generations only improved on it. As Sonic fans have learned though, straight 3D platforming, new characters and cameras haven’t been kind to the blue blur. With the apparent loss of the speed dash ability, gravity defying physics and all new enemies, I’m taking a wait and see approach until E3 rolls in.

Check out the reveal trailer below to get an idea of what lands Sonic will be speeding through next, and come back to Geekscape.net for all your E3 needs!

Unless you live in a deep, dark cave without any form of communication, friends and are forced to drink your own urine, you’ve probably heard about the Xbox One reveal. Thanks in part to the conference answering next to nothing about many of the questions that have built up over the past year, (will it need a constant Internet connection? Is Kinect required? Will it play used games?) There are so many rumors and too much head spinning double talk both from overzealous gamers and Microsoft themselves, that until there is more solid information, I don’t feel any of it is worth talking about without risking looking like a complete ass, (which I do regularly, but I at least want to sound like I know what I’m talking about.)

But one issue is too big to ignore. One that’s gotten a ton of attention over the last few days and one of the few subjects addressed directly by Phil Harrison, former Playstation talking point reciter and current Vice President at Microsoft. On the subject of used games in an interview with Kotaku, Harrison had the following to say about the Xbox One’s ability to play these industry killers, suggesting that a “fee” of the full MSRP would be required to activate the title on a console other than the one it was initially activated on.

“The bits that are on that disc, you can give it to your friend and they can install it on an Xbox One,” he said. “They would then have to purchase the right to play that game through Xbox Live.”

Maybe he’s still working for Sony as a double agent

So what does this mean? I know there are quite a few gamers out there that don’t see this as a big deal. “Stop being poor and get a job if you can’t afford the full price!” some so eloquently put it. Or “used games are killing this industry!” Yes, because used games are this new thing that didn’t exist during the boom periods of the PS2 and Xbox. My favorite is the idea that these businesses are out to make money first and foremost, customer be damned. But that’s the thing, while there will be a dedicated set of gamers that will buy anything Microsoft puts out regardless, all the new Xbox will do under the current circumstances is bury the new console before it’s released. And there are plenty of reasons why this subject alone will take the One to the point of no return.

First, taking the practice of trading in games and selling them back into consideration. One of the main reasons that such measures are being discussed in the first place is that publishers don’t see a dime of the sales used games bring in and the profits go straight into GameStop’s pockets. Some are even saying that gamers should be thankful to Microsoft, acting as if the company is their white knight that’s saving them from the evils of getting five dollars store credit for their $50 game. But if the consumer wants to take that hit, that’s their prerogative. Not to mention that some gamers wouldn’t even be able to afford new games without being able to trade in, potentially hurting new game sales even further, (ironic, isn’t it?)

“Five dollars for three games? There must be a promotion going on!”

Harrison has said that there will be some kind of ability to trade in games through Xbox Live, and recent news suggests that retailers will be able to accept trade ins if they register with Microsoft’s cloud storage system, giving both the console maker and the publishers a cut of the sales while removing the ability to play it from the person’s profile, (which is why the system is reportedly required to connect online once every 24 hours, but that’s a whole different subject .) This sounds great, doesn’t it? Everyone gets what they want. Except where does this leave small game stores? Whatever cut in profit and potential loss from this system could be sustained by GameStop. They’re big boys, they can take it. But the mom and pops that actually hire people that know what they’re talking about? Sorry, sucks to be you. You should’ve bought out a bunch of other game stores if you wanted to be a viable competitor. You know, if you weren’t so poor.

Second, Microsoft’s most loyal customers will suffer the most from this change. Take my home for example. My wife and I suck at sharing, so we have one or two 360’s each to ourselves, (probably more with all the red rings, but who’s counting?) Under this system, I would be able to play a game I bought under my profile, and as long as my profile is on her Xbox, she could play it too. But what happens when I’m using my Xbox somewhere else and she wants to play the game that’s under my name? Too bad, she’s got to buy it again. She should have thought of that before deciding to be so poor. After all, what gamer wouldn’t want to buy the same game more than once? This thinking sure sold a lot of 360’s.

Giving new meaning  to putting a ring on it.

Sarcasm aside, this is a continuing trend from the lack of split screen co op in so many games this generation. Our solution before was to rent a second copy to play together, but now that renting would be affected by this policy, we would have no choice but to buy it twice at the low, low fee of full MSRP. This isn’t just our problem either. What about siblings who have their own stuff? Since the console will need to confirm ownership so you don’t get any funny ideas about lending a game out, what about people who don’t have access to Internet at all times like servicemen? After all, how will the Xbox One know that you actually own the game if it can’t verify that you didn’t trade it in within the last day? It’s better to take the product from the consumer than risk them getting a free ride. But thanks for the sixty dollars!

While all of the above is bad enough, they don’t even touch down on my biggest problem with this whole concept, which is the loss of the ability to lend, borrow or rent games.  I don’t know about the rich gamers reading this out there, but even if I had the money to do so, (I don’t,) I wouldn’t buy each and every game that’s released that looks mildly interesting. Let’s face it, today’s games hardly justify a $60 purchase as it is, with half assed multiplayer modes being tacked on to traditionally single player games, while the solo campaigns get shorter and shorter. Without the ability to try a game before I buy it, an industry that’s already seeing less of my money as it is will soon see even less. There’s a saying that for every voice that speaks out, which is if someone speaks out, there are ten others who feel the same way, and if I can sit here and write pages about my concerns, I’m sure I’m not the only one who would gladly spend their money elsewhere.

Don’t think this won’t hurt the journalism industry either. The great thing about writing the articles I’ve written for Geekscape and other sites in the past was the ability to share my opinions with fellow gamers whether they agreed with me or not. I like you all, but not enough to spend that much on everything I want to review. Once in a while, publishers would be awesome enough to provide review copies so we could get our voice out there, but the mass majority of the games I’ve written about have been rentals. So what happens when many independent voices like mine that aren’t tied to a giant, multimedia company want to write about a game? That’ll be sixty dollars… every time. Unless you wait for a price drop months after release, making the article severely dated.

Game journalists now seeking sponsors.

What’s most concerning to me, and one subject that I haven’t seen discussed outside of my Facebook and Twitter rants, (cheap plug,) are the effect this will have on smaller publishers and creativity as a whole in an industry that’s already afraid of change. Without the ability to rent or borrow games, how willing do you think consumers will be to take a leap of faith and drop sixty hard earned dollars on an untested idea that they’re not sure they will like? I’m sure EA and Activision, (the only two publishers to take the stage at the conference I might add,) are jumping for joy knowing that gamers would rather spend their money on something tested and unchanging than something innovative if they couldn’t try it before they buy it. Without the ability to rent, I wouldn’t be here today writing this Bible of complaints because I wouldn’t be a gamer. I also wouldn’t have went out and bought Super Mario RPG, Earthbound, Donkey Kong Country and many other classics that I was on the fence about before I spent plenty of time on my three day rental from Blockbuster.

EA already took Dead Space, one of the most successful new IPs of the generation, and turned its newest installment into a borderline Gears of War clone that stripped it of almost everything that drew gamers to it in the first place. This attempt at mass market appeal will only grow under a system of “buy before you try,” and the ones that will hurt the most are the smaller, niche publishers who will be too afraid to take the risk of trying something new. So I hope you REALLY like playing the same five games over and over again. Actually, stop reading for a second, pick up your copy of your favorite multimillion franchise and give it a big hug. You better get real familiar with the thing, because this system will only foster the need to keep making the same old crap.

Because nothing says isolation and horror like forced co-op

So I hope Microsoft thinks about going forward with this. While they have promised exclusive games on the way, the 360 has had one of the weakest exclusive line ups I’ve ever seen since the Kinect launched, and have coasted on mostly having the superior versions of multi-platform software. They better pray to whoever they pray to that Sony has a similar used games strategy, because if not, there is no reason to own a game on the Xbox One if it can also be played on the PS4. Fifteen exclusives won’t be nearly enough to save them, and with their track record of such stellar titles like Tao Feng: Enter the Fist, their chances don’t look good. At this point, Microsoft has done far more to sell me on a PS4 or appreciate my Wii U than either Sony or Nintendo have done themselves.

Look, I get it. Piracy is a problem. Used games hurt profits. But punishing and restricting your user base? That will increase sales how? Last I checked, the Wii and DS had rampant piracy thanks to the Homebrew Channel and R4 device respectively, and yet that didn’t stop nine Wii games from selling over ten million units or the DS from becoming the highest selling game platform of all time. It’s still too early to call as far as how receptive gamers will be to these practices once the device is on shelves, but unlike most reveal backlash that is usually full of fanboy nonsense, there are plenty of very legitimate and very real complaints that Microsoft is doing nothing but fostering. If the next Xbox is truly going to be “the one,” they need to stop expecting consumers to “deal with it.” Because with so many alternatives in gaming and with two strong competitors that will be happy to take all that gamer cash instead, we don’t have to deal with anything.

Who knows? Maybe Sony and Nintendo will let Microsoft borrow some of it.

Nintendo made huge news when they announced that they weren’t going to hold an E3 press conference this year, surely signaling signs of their doom. At the conclusion of the last Nintendo Direct, CEO Satoru Iwata promised another edition before E3 before tweeting out some exciting news for hungry Wii U owners.

#IwataSays We will discuss new Smash Bros., 3D Mario game, Mario Kart and other Wii U titles in our #NintendoDirectNA before the start of E3 — Nintendo of America (@NintendoAmerica)

We knew it was coming, but we didn’t know when. That was until Iwata broke his silence on the Twitterverse again, telling us exactly when we’ll be able to find out about these upcoming titles.

Hello. We already announced we will have another #NintendoDirectNA at E3, but now we can share the date/time: 6/11 at 7 am PT. #IwataSays

E3 has traditionally been the place where game companies come in with guns blazing, hyping up gamers for what’s coming in the following year and beyond. This year, Nintendo has a lot to prove, between losing support from some major publishers and leaving a gap between releases that’s far too big for a new console.

Aside from the already exciting news of a new 3D Mario and Smash Bros. game, what other surprises can we expext? A Bayonetta 2 release date? The revival of the Vitality Sensor? The ability to Skype and watch a movie AT THE SAME TIME!?!?!?

Is your body ready?

Stay tuned to Geekscape in the weeks leading up to E3 for all that gaming goodness!

Another year, another Call of Duty. When Activision and Infinity Ward took the stage of the Xbox One reveal to discuss the upcoming COD: Ghosts, they promised that it wouldn’t be more of the same. While that has yet to be seen from a game play standpoint, the details they did reveal hope to convince gamers that this is going to be more than just a map pack in disguise.

Featuring dynamic online maps that change as you play, a new cast and a story written by Stephen Gaghan, (who penned Traffic and Syriana,) were perhaps overshadowed by the newest squad mate to join the team. Rather than another roided up military tough guy, a great amount  of detail went into the squad member on four legs.

Not since Dog’s Life has so much attention gone into properly capturing dog behavior in a game. It’s good to see that the next generation of canine technology has finally arrived! Using motion capture with a real German Shepard, Infinity Ward promises that you’re going to really care for this dog. I mean really build a strong attachment to him as you brave the trenches of war against enemy soldiers that are out for your blood. Knowing that no matter how many combatants head your way, you’ll get through it knowing your loyal friend is at your side!

Yeah, he’s gonna die at the end…

Watch this incredible dog-soldier dynamic in action and get hyped for this holiday season when you’ll be able to have this shooter in your hands!

The Yakuza series, known for its always violent, sometimes campy depiction of the Japanese crime world, will be making its first appearance on a non Sony console when Yakuza 1 and 2 HD hits the Wii U. The catch? It’s only in Japan.

Continuing what seems to be a strong partnership between former rivals and kings of our childhood, Nintendo and Sega had quite a few bombshells during the Nintendo Direct presentation last week. Yakuza 1 and 2 will go a long way to help dispel the stigma surrounding Nintendo as a “kids console.” The only problem is that Yakuza has never been more than a cult classic amongst gamers outside of Japan, so getting the game here is a long shot. All we can do is show our support and hope for the best, since you know… online petitions don’t work.

Featuring an HD upgrade and off TV play, Yakuza 1 & 2 HD hits Japanese shelves in August.
