Throughout the 2D fighting game resurgence over the last few years, one of the kings of the genre has been largely absent. As franchises both new and old continued to thrive, The King Of Fighters seemingly vanished, with the once yearly fighting game franchise failing to see a new release since the thirteenth game released in 2010. Using the last six years to regroup, refocus and rebuild, SNK Playmore’s flagship fighter has finally returned with The King Of Fighters XIV. Re-debuting with both a visual and mechanical overhaul, the series aims to make its current gen debut on PS4 the most accessible to date, all while keeping its solid team based fighting at the forefront. Succeeding in some aspects and failing in others, XIV may not be a return to form, but that doesn’t mean its not an enjoyable title in its own right.

Many years after the fall of Ash Crimson and the apparent demise of Orochi, The King of Fighters tournament has failed to re-surface. Suddenly, a mysterious benefactor by the name of Antonov revives the tournament while claiming that he is the one true fighting champion. To see if anyone can prove him wrong, the powerful warrior hopes to back up his claims by inviting teams from around the world to compete in his tournament for a chance to face him, featuring competitors like the legendary Team Japan, (Kyo, Benimaru and Goro Daimon), the heroes of South Town, (Terry Bogard, Andy Bogard and Joe Higashi), and a mysterious new trio Antonov invited personally. As usual, not all is as it seems, with a more sinister plot taking place underneath the surface.

The Rivalry Continues

Taking an opposite approach compared to its most immediate competition, KOF XIV sticks to a more traditional set of modes when it comes to its feature set. Featuring a giant 50 character roster, (48 to start with and two to unlock), 17 are brand new. Among the 33 characters returning, some of which haven’t been playable in over a decade, and even old favorites have received some big changes, for better and for worse. The core fighting revolves around choosing a team of three fighters, each of which take turns against the opposing group. Becoming somewhat of a survival fight, your first fighter will stay in the match until they’re knocked out, moving on to your second and third character, with the loser obviously being the team who loses all three members first. Using a four button control scheme made up of light and strong punches and kicks, using them to activate the right combos, special moves and super moves at the right times will be the difference between winning and losing.

Considering that this is the fourteenth game in the series, chances are you’ve already played one of these games, which also means you’re well aware of the basic mechanics that make up these games. Moving on to what’s changed since last time, SNK Playmore has delivered on their promise to make the game more accessible to newcomers with new abilities and easy combos. Tapping the light punch button in succession will trigger an auto combo that ends in a devastating super move, (assuming you have enough special meter to pull it off.) Hitting the strong punch and kick buttons at the same time activates a Blow Back attack, instantly creating distance by knocking the opponent to the other side of the screen while setting them up for long range damage. Past KOF games let you pay one meter for a temporary power boost, which gets taken a step further this time around. Once in Max Mode, you’ll have a set amount of time to activate your EX special moves as much as you want. Other fighters usually make you pay per use of an EX attack, but having unlimited usage of the stronger versions of your special attacks can help you turn the tide of battle real quick. Couple these with your Max Super SP moves, and it won’t be long after comboing in these souped up versions of your super moves take down your enemies. Then again, when you want your victories to have that extra flair, new Climax Super SP Moves can wipe out half of the enemy’s health in one attack at the cost of three meters, complete with a special cutscene to accompany the chaos.

Old favorites return alongside some new faces

Once you’ve gotten the hang of the core mechanics, KOF has plenty of ways to put what you’ve learned to the test. Namely, its Story Mode functions much like the Arcade Mode of past games, with an added cinematic presentation at certain points. Aside from the mandatory cutscenes that play no matter who you’re using, having certain characters fight each other will activate some back and forth dialogue that can both explore character motivations and relationships. If playing with one of the game’s established teams, finishing the game will reward you with a lengthy ending, complete with some well drawn still frames depicting the aftermath of the tournament for your team.

Supplementary single player modes include your typical Survival Mode, Time Attack, Training, and Vs. Mode against both other players or the CPU. Who would have thought!? Sadly, Trial Mode, the combo tutorial feature that has become a fighting game staple over the last few years, went from my most anticipated mode to my least favorite. Unlike other games that delve into some of the more complex mechanics for each character, each set is nearly identical in KOF regardless of who you’re playing as. Serving as a way to test your basic understanding of cancels and super moves, it does little to help you bring out the full potential of your fighter.

Yet, in a reversal of fortunes, Online Mode, which was the weak point of the previous game due to horrible netcode, is much improved this time around. Aside from most of my matches being lag free during both Player Match fights and Ranked Match fights, there’s just so much to do with friends and strangers alike this time around. First off, SNK had the sense to only make you use your preset team in Ranked Match, which prevents counter picking while letting you switch things up in Player Match lobbies. Speaking of, KOF XIV handles lobbies better than any fighter I’ve played before. Rather than make say… A queue of 10 wait for the top 2 people to finish before taking turns, anyone in the lobby will automatically be paired up to fight with someone who’s not in a fight, making it so that the only way someone won’t be playing is if there’s an odd number of players participating. Even then, the person not fighting can choose to spectate any of the fights they want. So if they see a character fighting that they’re not familiar with, they can spy on the fight and pick up some tips! Either that, or they could go into the online practice mode, where you can head into training mode with another real life person and brush up on your combos. For the extra sociable brawlers out there, Party Mode delivers a true to life KOF experience, pitting three individuals against three others for a six player fight for supremacy. Just remember, that super meter isn’t just YOURS anymore, adding an extra caveat to keep in mind when you don’t want to piss off your friends.

We can’t talk about the game without addressing its most obvious shortcoming, which is its bland graphics. Looking not too far off from what you’d expect from the Maximum Impact series from over a decade ago, its wasn’t long before I was longing for those gorgeous 2D sprites from the last two games. Everything from the character models to the effects look far from what you’d expect from a PS4 exclusive, and it doesn’t gain any points from its pre-rendered CG’s, which don’t look too much better.

Then again, fighting isn’t about how one looks, but how one plays To its credit, XIV has its fundamental play down. For veterans however, you’ll likely come across a series of small changes that aren’t game breaking by any means, but will definitely feel like a step backwards. Namely, the game feels far too easy to complete, taking a series that has been known for its punishing bosses, and delivering a final fight that won’t feel like much more of a struggle than your typical brawl. Combos don’t seem to scale back damage as much, leading to some basic chains wiping out nearly an entire health bar for some low risk high reward game play. The most puzzling aspect however, is how some classic characters have had some odd changes to their tool set, making them less effective while keeping their core abilities intact. Unlike say, how Vega is a completely different character in Street Fighter V, Athena is largely the same, but is made to be even more vulnerable after certain attacks, having her Phoenix Arrow’s ending kick be interruptible, and losing her wall jump. Taking away abilities that some characters have had for two decades feels unnecessary, but doesn’t detract from the overall excitement of the game play after making the proper adjustments.

The King of Fighters XIV has a lot going for it. Its huge roster, proper single player modes with rewards in the form of endings and artwork spanning 22 years, easy to pick up and play mechanics and its hidden depth are all still here, along with one of the best sets of online features in the genre and some features to make the game more accessible for new players. Still, I can’t help but feel like something is missing compared to past games that make this entry stand above all the others. Maybe its the easy difficulty when it comes to beating the Story Mode. It could be the dated graphics, or the lack of effort it takes to pull off huge damage compared to other games. Then again, having characters changed for the worse doesn’t help either. If anything, this game is a perfect case of “death by 1000 needles”. There’s no one problem with it that overshadows what it does well, but so many small issues take what is otherwise a great game, and turns it to one that’s simply better than good. Fighting game fans will find plenty to love, but with that in mind, there’s also plenty of room to get better. Let’s just hope we won’t have to wait another six years to see the improvements.

Dear Esther is pretty damned old (the original version released on 2008) and it’s certainly not for everyone (I’ve heard many individuals argue that Dear Esther isn’t really a ‘game’ at all), but the classic The Chinese Room title is now making the jump over to two new consoles.

Dear Esther: The Landmark Edition will hit PS4 and Xbox One this September, and will include “first-hand insight on never-before-heard details, and provides a fresh perspective on the game’s development and legacy”.

“Abandoning traditional gameplay for a pure story-driven experience, Dear Esther fuses its beautiful environments with a breathtaking soundtrack to tell a powerful story of love, loss, guilt and redemption.”

It’s quite the experience, and a fairly short one at that. I’d implore anyone who hasn’t experienced the title to give it a shot. Dear Esther: The Landmark Edition will cost a cool $9.99.

Seriously, I suck something fierce. This trailer brings the dark gothic beauty to another level. The set pieces, and bosses look terrifying. I cannot wait to pick this up and get my ass beat.

Another hot and ready announcement to come out of Gamescom this morning is the reveal of a brand new Metal Gear game by Konami!

No, it’s not a Pachinko or mobile game either, but a real console Metal Gear game! Let’s check it out shall we? (Wow Golly this sure is exciting. Obviously nothing can go wrong.)

Anyways, Metal Gear Survive  is expected to launch sometime in 2017 and crush peoples hopes and dreams of ever getting a proper MGS game within the next 10 years. The disappointment is expected to launch for Xbox One, PS4, and PC.

Did someone say that they wanted a new Yooka Laylee trailer? No? Well, you’re getting one anyway.

If you’re in Germany this week odds are you’re there for Gamescom, or you just live there. No matter the reason, Playtonic Games has decided to celebrate this by releasing a new trailer for Yooka Laylee. The new trailer below features a new minecart level as well as a new snow plow transformation and even a brand new area which looks to BEE Capital B’s Lair, Hivory Towers. The game is still scheduled for Q1 2017 for Xbox One, PS4, PC, and Wii U. Comment below and tell us what you thought of the trailer!

Destiny‘s next, long awaited and highly anticipated expansion, Rise of Iron, is set to debut on Xbox One and PS4 on September 20th, and today at Gamescom, Activision debuted a new 8+ minute ViDoc detailing essentially everything new that’s coming to the game next month.

In the video you’ll see the new raid, new strike, all of the plentiful new customization options, and much more. If you’re still a fan of the game, or are looking to jump back into it, this video should get you sufficiently excited.

So what’s all this talk about No Man’s Sky?

Developed by Hello Games, No Man’s Sky was released on August 9th for the Playstation 4 (with a delayed release to Windows PC’s via Steam.) No Man’s Sky is an exploration survival game, set in a (basically) infinite procedurally generated galaxy, each planet with their own unique habitat set with fauna, flora, minerals, and other resources. Your goal is to reach to the center of the universe, by request of a mysterious force called Atlas, though if you don’t want to sit through playing the story, you are more than welcome to pave your own path and explore the universe as you please.

When I first heard about this game during their announcement in the 2014 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), I was awed and excited. A space exploration game where you could endlessly traverse through countless planets? Where you can play with millions of people and still make discoveries no one else has made, discover planets that are yet undiscovered by the other players? Yes, sign me up!

As the release date came closer, more announcements were made. Naming planets, along with their respective flora and fauna. Space battles. Other sentient life forms, and learning their languages. Oh man, this game was going to be insane!

Finally, the release came. I bought it immediately. I popped out the disk and started the game up on my Playstation.

The first thing I saw was a vast terrain of unusual plants, minerals and creatures. As my camera turned, I saw my space ship, damaged and broken.

My first task was to gather resources to rebuild my ship.

After roaming around the planet searching for materials, I finally rebuilt my ship to working condition. I had to tread wearily, as planets can have hostile life forms. Sentinels act as security guards on each planet, keeping a watchful eye on me as I mined for ore. Sometimes they would attack me if they deemed me hostile. I can attack them for titanium but sometimes it was best to run away before reinforcements were called in.

Eventually, I was led on a journey to rebuild my ship well enough to warp to farther planets, and along the way, I found alien monoliths. I learned words for certain alien races, and even interacted with a few aliens, though I had a hard time understanding what they said, I only knew so many words of their language. And while I don’t know what Atlas is (yet), I’m sent on a mission by Atlas to travel to the center of the universe, with the aid of aliens, technology, and black holes.

As you continue exploring the game, you’ll find upgrades for your exosuit, gun (called a Multitool), and ship. You will even come across distress signals where you may find another ship you can rebuild. You can even buy ships from traders and sellers.

So how do I like this game? It was everything I expected (and almost everything that Hello Games said it was going to be). Smooth controls, simple interface, insanely gorgeous graphics, and a wonderfully vast map of planets to explore. This game ended up to be much more realistic than I expected. Without a pulse engine and booster, some spots on the map might take you days (in real real-time) to walk or fly to. You have to constantly mine for energy materials to charge your life support system and blasters and fuel your ship. You could get attacked by hostile creatures that want to eat you or even befriend a friendly creature that will help you find rare resources on the planet you are on. Make friends with sentient species, or defend a ship sending out a distress signal within a battle in space. All these little things make this game so much more interactive, it truly draws you in.

I have yet to encounter any other players yet, though it has been confirmed that two players have managed to meet, a mind-boggling feat.

No Man’s Sky scores a cool 4.5/5. It’s a masterpiece, a game with a strong (yet subtle) story, yet versatile enough to where players can choose their own path and carve out their own story. With gorgeous scenery and immersive gameplay, this is easily one of the best games I’ve played to date (and I cannot wait to keep playing).

After being announced and touted as an Xbox console exclusive, developer Playdead has revealed that their critically acclaimed Limbo follow-up, Inside, is making its way over to PS4.

The announcement comes via an accolades trailer on the official Playstation YouTube channel, which concludes with the reveal that Inside will launch on the console on August 23rd.

We can’t freaking wait.

To celebrate the start of the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, Blizzard announced that some special gear is now being made available in Overwatch for a limited time, alongside a new mode featuring the game’s resident Brazilian, Lucio.

Featuring costumes, sprays, voice lines, highlight intros, emotes, and victory poses exclusive to this event, over 100 new items will be available for players to unlock during the promotion period. Running from August 2-22, that gives us three weeks to grind up those levels and stockpile our loot boxes so we can hope to nab some of this new stuff. Or… You could always buy boxes, which I’m guessing Blizzard and Activision are counting on.

Easing the grind slightly is Sportsball Lucioball, a new mode where two teams of three Lucio’s skate across a field in what’s essentially a game of soccer. Tweaking his abilities slightly to match the new game mode, his main attack has been replaced with his melee attack, his standard fire is now a secondary fire option that can only shoot once every few seconds, and his volume increase only has an effect on the user as opposed to those around him. Lucio’s Ultimate would also have no use since shields aren’t needed in a peaceful game, so activating it now pulls the ball towards him. Now, if only we could find a way to keep someone as a goalie instead of having the whole team rush the opponent’s net, only for the ball to casually roll into our undefended goal, that would be swell…

Special Summer Games loot boxes will guarantee at least one special item per box, but cannot be bought with coins. So if you’ve saved some up and were hoping to save yourself the trouble of relying on RNG, you’re out of luck. Unfortunately, duplicate Olympic items can still be obtained, which will be traded in for coins that can’t be used to buy them. All in all, I love the new stuff, but the way it’s being approached isn’t the best as far as I’m concerned. Considering how the promotion only running for three weeks, and how high level players can take a long time to level up, the most dedicated players won’t be able to obtain the items they want without either casting aside all responsibilities to play nonstop, or spend potentially hundreds of dollars, neither of which promises anything. I know they need to monetize the game somehow, but allowing normal items in the special drops, duplicates, AND not allowing us to use coins to buy them seems ridiculous.

Complaints aside, the new mode and loot have been a lot of fun to play with and collect so far. Let’s hope Blizzard will take these concerns into consideration going forward. What are your thoughts on the first Overwatch special event? Comment below and let us know!

Over the last few months, there have been numerous three person teams announced leading up to the release of The King Of Fighters XIV. However, all of them were just biding time for the inevitable announcement of Team Psycho Soldier, consisting of Athena Asamiya, Sie Kensou, and their master, Chin. Now that they’re finally being shown off in the latest game play trailer, it’s safe to say we can pack it up. We’ve peaked! There’s nothing left to show.

Okay, maybe I’m a little biased since this crew has been my main team since KOF 95, but that doesn’t stop this team from being incredible without my incessant rambling. Serving as somewhat of a wink and nod to longtime SNK fans, Athena, Kensou and their team name is ripped straight out of the 80’s, where the two made their debuts in the arcade side scroller, Psycho SoldiersSoldiers itself was a sequel to Athena, which gave us control of the actual goddess, who this current version is supposed to be a descendant of. The current version lives a dual life as a teenage school girl and pop idol, (when not using her powers to fight in martial arts tournaments), which is yet another reference to her old school game being the first in gaming history to feature recorded lyrics for one of its songs. She’s also been a school girl for 21 years, proving some of us age better than others.

Outside of the history lesson however, all three members are formidable in their own right, using a series of attacks that can do big damage up close, at a distance, and even send enemy attacks back at them. Athena in particular can control the field with ease thanks to her teleport and powerful projectiles. Master Chin on the other hand, uses his slow speed and short range to throw off his opponents, showing off his drunken boxing fighting style to keep a pace that’s unlike any other character. When he lands a hit though, it hits hard. Kensou falls somewhere in the middle, lacking the mobility of Athena while having much better range and speed than their sensei. Bring them together, and you get one of the more well rounded teams in the game. Unless you’re like everyone else and will just break them up to make a custom team… Then just use Athena.

The King Of Fighters XIV is set for an August 23 release exclusively for PS4.

From the beginning, one of the main selling points of Lego Dimensions has been its ability to bring characters from a wide variety of franchises together under one roof. Heading into the second season of the Toys To Life title, it’s safe to say that Sonic The Hedgehog’s reveal during E3 season had to have been the most surprising, bringing one of gaming’s biggest icons into the Lego world. Hot on the heels of two new game announcements featuring the blue blur, Traveler’s Tales and WB Games have given us our first footage of Sonic in action.

At first glance, it’s surprising how well represented Sonic’s world is. Featuring some of the game’s iconic enemies and locations in the trailer ranging from Green Hill Zone to the city in Sonic Adventure, imagine my surprise when the developers went as far as to have the destroyed robots drop trapped animals when destroyed! Equipped with many of the attacks that have become synonymous with Sonic over the years, including the Spin Dash, Homing Attack, and the recently added dive kick, rings and robots are abound in what looks to be a faithful Level Pack. If anything, the only aspect that seems lost is the sense of speed that his actual games typically have… Assuming TT isn’t purposely basing their adaptation on Sonic Lost World. In that case, they nailed it!

But the most surreal part of watching Sonic’s trailer is seeing him explore all these other universes. I mean, Sonic in Portal. Sonic in Adventure Time. Sonic fighting side by side with the Justice League! What a time to be alive! Scheduled to be released on November 18 and packaged with his trademark Tornado biplane and Sonic Speedster, this is looking to be an interesting 12 months for Sega’s mascot.

We had the pleasure of being at the Injustice 2 panel at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con! Here’s what you need to know!

The panel started with the trailer they released during this year’s E3. After that, the lead on the project, and creator of some of our most beloved games, Ed Boon stepped out on stage. Perhaps one of the most interesting things Ed Boon talked about early on in the panel was how Injustice came to be. Of course, fans of the DC lore know there’s a comic, but as for how it ended up on the consoles, Ed Boon said NetherRealm studios was looking to work on a game that was a little less gory. Still, Boon was grateful that the folks over at Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment allowed Boon and his team to create a more violent atmosphere for some of DC’s most iconic heroes and villains.

Boon went on to elaborate how the creation of this new mini-universe existing within the greater DC lore kept him and his team focused and dedicated. The chance at adding a new chapter in the DC Universe was something NetherRealm and Boon wanted to accomplish from the start. As for Injustice 2, the game’s story is taking precedence, which is highly unusual for fighting games. The first game’s lead writer is back and promised that there’s much more in store for the sequel. One of the most exciting story-related announcements from the panel was that of Supergirl’s heavy involvement. According to Boon and the panel, Supergirl’s story arc is going to be major and may be the catalyst for the sequel’s story. I’m only guessing here, but is it possible Supergirl would break Superman out of prison we saw him in at the end of Injustice?

As for the gear featured in the game, there will be lots of it and gamers will be constantly progressing. But for fans who are in the competitive scene, fear not! Injustice 2 will feature a Tournament Mode in which the gear and all its attributes will be negated, creating an even playing field.

The first Injustice game had 30 characters total, and Ed Boon himself confirmed that Injustice 2 aims to break that number, making it the biggest DC roster yet for a fighting game. Not only that, but the panel let on that there will probably be at least one major Mortal Kombat character to be included later on via DLC. Boon also commented on the number of tweets he gets, asking for specific characters to be included in the game. We should be getting character reveals at every convention from here until release date. As for this year’s convention, we got a trailer introducing Wonder Woman and Blue Beetle.

It’s important to note that all player models were created with the use of facial motion capture, ensuring top quality when the game releases. As for Blue Beetle, I also want to get it out there that hero will in fact be a teenager. That’s it for now folks! Injustice 2 will be releasing next year.

Call of Duty is one of the longest running FPS franchises around. With other FPS, namely Battlefield, going backwards, Call of Duty is steady on going to the future. Infinite War takes gamers to space as they combat a lethal army hellbent on destroying Earth and everything associated with it. No, there’s not going to be any aliens here, but that won’t stop Infinity Ward from introducing sci-fi looking weapons.

Not much was revealed during the panel, however, Infinity Ward did drop a few tidbits on the game’s story. For instance, the focus of this particular Call of Duty is to drive the game’s story to a place that exceeds past iterations of the franchise. Early on, the team decided to approach this next chapter with an increased cinematic experience. To do this, the main cast was brought in to work and act out each cutscene and in-game cinematic using motion capture suits. It took TWO years to do this, with absolutely no recording booths involved. To prep the actors, military personnel were brought in to teach the actors how to handle themselves during firefight situations, how to carry rifles, how to shoot weapons, and follow protocol during certain situations.

During a demo shown to us during the panel, most of the player models looked nearly complete. One thing I did notice was that all of the female characters were unusually smooth, but I’ll hold any and all reservations until the game is actually released. With a cast like Kit Harrington, who plays the main villain, Brian Bloom, David Harewood, and Jamie Gray Hyder, we’re bound to play through one of the most narrative driven Call of Duty‘s to date.

The last announcement that came during the panel was the inclusion of a Zombies mode in Infinite Warfare. This is a first for an Infinity Ward Call of Duty title. This was a huge announcement as the Zombie Call of Duty community continues to grow. Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare released November 12, 2016.

Tonight was the night of the Sonic 25th Anniversary Party, and things didn’t go quite as expected. Most of the party was plagued by terrible audio and visual problems that were quite embarrassing.

Aside from that, there was some awesome news that’s sure to make any Sonic fan spin dash their way to the nearest Gamestop to put in some pre orders. First up was the announcement Sonic Mania, a brand new 2D game featuring popular indie dev & fan Christian Whitehead as one of the main programmers. The game will have Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles playable, as well as introducing new zones, old favorites, and much more. Check out the announce trailer here!

That wasn’t all though, as Sega had one last surprise for the hedgehogs fans. As a final announcement, they confirmed that a brand new 3D installment has also been in development. The game looks to take place after Sonic Generations and could possibly be a sequel to the popular 2011 title. Check out the trailer and come up with your own theories on what it could be!

Both games are  confirmed for a 2017 launch with mania being spring 2017 while project 2017 is looking at a Holiday window. both games are scheduled to release on Xbox One, PS4, PC, and even NX in the case of P2017. Yesterday Namco announced a surprise game!

Turns out, they’ve been working on a sequel to 2007’s Pac-Man Championship Edition for XBLA, PSN, and PC. Now they’re back, and they’ve crammed even more stuff into this new addition. This includes new things such as giant ghosts, bounce pads, and more!

The best part? If you’re attending SDCC this weekend you can try out the game yourself at the Namco booth! Cool huh? Be sure to keep an eye out in the coming week for our thoughts on the game.

Walking the San Diego Comic-Con floor this year, it’d be impossible not to notice the insanely intricate booth-work that companies like WETA, Alex Ross Art, Adult Swim, and Capcom (among others) have brought with them from all over the country to impress the hundreds of thousands of attendees that will walk the show floor over the next four days.

The best looking booth this year? After walking KM after KM on the convention floor (trying to see all of the slick booths and also trying to hatch some Pokémon eggs), it’s pretty clear that Capcom’s Resident Evil 7 installation is the most striking both of 2016. Seriously, this thing looks like it’s straight out of the village from Resident Evil 4, which is an exciting throwback to the last time that Resident Evil was truly terrifying.

The booth features a series of small rooms. In each dilapidated, cobweb-infested, barely lit space (again, really selling the whole ‘terrifying’ aspect) was a single chair, a television, and a Playstation 4 unit with a Playstation VR headset attached.

Inside the room, we sat down and were set to experience the Kitchen demonstration, which is a short but intense PlayStation VR demo that serves to set up events that lead up to Resident Evil 7.  The Capcom representative let us know that this demo has only been shown a handful of times, and was completed about a year ago (well before Resident Evil 7 was announced) to show the level of immersion that the team would strive for with the finished product.

This was the first time that I’d ever actually put a Playstation VR headset on my head, and I was beyond surprised with just how good looking, comfortable, and easily adjustable the headset was. A single button on the back of the unit allows you to adjust how tight the headset is on your head, while a button on the front allows you to move the display closer or further away from your eyes. Seriously, this is far and away the most comfortable VR headset that I’ve had the opportunity to wear thus far.

As soon as the demo begins, another thing that shocked me is just how fluid movement is on the Playstation VR. I had just completed an HTC Vive demonstration a few hours before, which I was seriously impressed with (look for the video soon), but the virtually 1:1 tracking of the Playstation VR system absolutely blew me away, and exponentially added to the already incredible immersion that VR brings to the table.

The demo is fairly short, but definitely had me jump (and Shane scream) more than a couple of times throughout its duration. Kitchen fades in from black, and has you looking around a disgusting kitchen (obviously) setting, hands and feet tied to a chair, with seemingly no knowledge of how you got there or what is happening. Turning and moving the Dualshock 4 controller will turn and stretch your wrists in an eerily-lifelike manner, and after a moment you’ll notice an unconscious body on the floor. Get his attention, and he’ll wake up and try to help you… and that’s when shit hits the fan.

I had a blast experiencing Kitchen. It was immersive as hell, but not great looking, and not the most interactive demo that I’ve experienced even today. Jaggies were prominent (though the framerate seemed very smooth), textures seemed fairly muddy (though we’re not sure if this is from the VR headset, or because of this being an older demo), and you only really need to complete one or two actions, and for the rest of the demonstration you’re just along for the (scary) ride.

The Resident Evil 7 booth is a must-visit, and you can head to the booth (#215) as soon as the floor opens in order to get your free ticket to experience the event. Tickets are limited, so you’ll want to get there fast.

Overall, Kitchen made me really excited for the Resident Evil 7 VR experience, and really excited for a Resident Evil game for the first time in a long time.

Resident Evil 7 hits Windows, PS4, and Xbox One on January 27th, and I can’t wait to check it out.

Shane’s Thoughts

The thing I noticed first about the RE7 demo was how much I liked the Playstation VR headset.

It stretched out easily to fit my rather large head, and the lenses were the easiest to focus: VR and I haven’t really gotten along, and a lot of it looks really grainy and pixelated. From what I’ve been able to gather, it’s because of my 20/10 vision not working well with focal points/lenses designed for 20/20 vision and below with corrective lenses. It’s always been a chore to find the right focus for any of the VR experiences I’ve been able to check out. The Samsung Gear is my least favorite, as the lenses top out at an incredibly short distance.

The Playstation VR headset had an incredible range of focus with the lenses, and the rubber shroud around the goggle portion cut out any and all light coming from the inside.

Once in the demo, I instantly noticed how quickly everything moved. The refresh rate felt very high, and the tracking didn’t have any of the normal “lag” I was used to with things like Oculus and Vive.

The demo itself was very instense. As I was stuck in the chair, I was trying to move around and get a better look at the kitchen. I accidentally knocked over the camera that was filming the player, and it spooked the hell out of me.

When the “zombie” came and attacked me, I physically reacted. I cringed and leaned back as she pointed the knife in my face, and when she stabbed my leg my whole body twitched. My heart rate climbed and I was getting nervous.

The end has her coming from behind you, putting her hands over your face then leaning over and stabbing you. Seeing these bloodied fingers come around my face really disturbed me, and made me really uncomortable.

All and all I am very excited to see what Capcom is going to bring to the table with Resident Evil 7 and I can safely say this came will be amazing in VR. Just from the short demo I got to experience today, I can tell you I will be getting this VR setup.

Briefly: The timed exclusivity of Square-Enix’s 2015 masterpiece is nearly up.

The publisher announced today that PS4 players can finally get their hands on the game when Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration launches on October 11th.

The new package will contain a completely new story chapter entitled “Blood Ties”, a new co-op Endurance gameplay, PlayStation VR support for “Blood Ties”, all of the previously released DLC, more outfits, weapons, and Expedition Cards.  The Limited Edition of the game will also feature a limited edition art book.

“Blood Ties,” a new premium DLC, beckons players to explore Croft Manor in a new story mode; then defend it against a zombie invasion in “Lara’s Nightmare”. When Lara’s uncle contests ownership of the Manor, Lara must explore the estate to find proof that she is the rightful heir, or lose her birthright and father’s secrets for good. Players can then test their zombie-killing skills in the replayable “Lara’s Nightmare” mode: a haunted Croft Manor where players have new challenges and must rid the Manor of an evil presence.

Scot Amos, co-Head of Studio at Crystal Dynamics states that “The studio is celebrating with all Tomb Raider® fans, thanking them for being on Lara’s 20 year journey with us. The team has packed in surprises, new story, and the top-requested special features into this 20 Year Celebration edition.”

Square-Enix notes that all of the game’s previously released DLC will be included, including the three hour story addition Baba Yaga: The Temple of the Witch, Cold Darkness Awakened in which players must combat waves of infected predators, 12 DLC outfits, 7 DLC weapons, over 35 Expedition Cards, and more.

For the truly hardcore, 20 Year Celebration will also feature a brutal new “Extreme Survivor” setting. This new difficulty level takes the toughness of Survivor and ratchets it up several notches starting with all checkpoints being stripped out of the game. The only way to save the game is forage enough resources to light campfires.

That sounds… too hard.

I ended up buying an Xbox One just so I could play Rise of the Tomb Raider, and I’m pretty embarrassed to say that I’ve only put a few hours into it at this point. I guess I know the hard deadline for completing the game at this point…

When you’re at Anime Expo, you expect to come across some weird stuff considering you’re surrounded by all things Japan. Knowing this, I was confident that I found the most Japanese game I would ever hope to play early into the first day. If you have your doubts about such a bold statement, imagine a rail shooter where your targets are an army of Japanese school girls who are desperately in love with you. And you can see through their clothes when zooming in. And headshots are replaced with a bullet to the boobs or vag.

Yep, that’s Gal Gun: Double Peace in its purest form. As the sequel to the original Gal Gun, which was released on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, was shockingly never released outside of Japan. Proving that there is still good in the world, that’s changing with this PS4 and PS Vita sequel. As far as I could tell from my brief demo, the girls are being controlled by demons that are forcing them to attack you with their love, and it’s up to you to shoot them down with your pheromone bullets to help them come to their senses. That’s right, even in a game such as this, the girls have to be coerced into paying attention to you. Being the hero that you are, no breast will be untouched as you save your school from this menace.

Beneath all of the absurd content, there’s some solid gameplay to be discovered. Believe it or not, the game is developed by Inti Creates, the team behind classics such as the Mega Man Zero series. Searching the environment for hidden demons and passports give you extra points and more insight on your classmates, while pulling off a series of one hit kills gives you huge bonus points for that coveted end of stage rank. Once your special meter fills up enough, you’ll be able to use a special attack that rounds up as many girls as you can fit on your screen and sits them down in compromising positions, while you rub and poke the evil out of them by finding their favorite spots. It’s for their own good, you see.

Double Peace isn’t all about shooting though. Sometimes, you’ll have to give your clumsy friends a helping hand. One example showed your friend try to look out of a window, but ended up getting stuck when she bent over and stuck her body outside of it. You’ll naturally want to get her out of that position in the quickest way possible, so what do you do? Open the window further? Push it upwards to give her a little more space? No, you’ll obviously stand behind her, grab both of her hips, and proceed to push and pull her until she’s able to pop out of her predicament. Using the PS4 controller’s touch pad to simulate pulling her by sliding your thumbs up and down the sides, I can honestly say that’s a first in my many years of gaming. And yes, this game is completely self aware, which is obvious since the game actually has a command to blank the screen out and replace it with a fake 8-bit RPG. Yeah, that’s right. The game has a panic button to hide your screen in case someone walks into the room. But hey, your character is a girl! Does that make it better or worse?

When I walked away from Double Peace, I knew that nothing at AX would be as shameless as the time I spent with the game. And yet, given how ridiculous the game was from start to finish, I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face. In a completely unironic way, I can’t wait to see how much more absurd the final game can get, which is why I’m suddenly finding Gal Gun on my radar.

It’s been a very emotional ride as the game had to be delayed numerous times, but the team is very excited for people to finally get their hands on the game for PS4 and PC come August 9th. I like to imagine at some point, after creating hundreds of figures and characters, that the developers of Skylanders Imaginators came up with this year’s core mechanic because they were completely out of ideas when it came to new toys for Portal Masters to take control of. And honestly, with so much content released since the original game took off in 2011, who could blame them? But with the introduction of custom Skylanders, the game has opened up an opportunity to allow its fans both young and young at heart to let their imaginations take charge and help them create the perfect character. But how will this all work? We headed over to Activision’s theater room during E3 2016 and learned all we could about the Toys To Life pioneer’s next release.

Kaos is up to no good once again, deciding that it might be best to imitate the Portal Masters who have thwarted him so many times before. Taking control of a new set of evil Skylanders, these “Doomlanders” as they’re called, the previous roster might not be enough to stop them. That’s where the Portal Masters will take control and begin to create new characters that will take the fight to Kaos, but they’ll need some new toys if they want to have access to the full range of possibilities.

Held in Creation Crystals, one version of the toy will be released for every element, (that’s 10 for those keeping count). Once placed on the Portal of Power, the crystal will take us into a character creation screen, allowing us to customize just about every aspect of the character that we can imagine. From their name, height, width, face, hair, color, accessories and fighting style, Imaginators will even let you create their own catchphrase for them to triumphantly call out when summoned. If you want your Skylander to have a tail, you can do it. If you want them to have a fart aura that follows them everywhere they go for some reason, you can do that too. And when you finally have that perfect Imaginator, make sure to take a selfie and hang it in your hub world for everyone to see! But just because your character is created doesn’t mean that that’s where your input stops.

Throughout the adventure, full sets of gear can be discovered, which will join hats as clothing that will affect your character’s stats. By finding hidden treasure chests, completing mini games, (including one based off of the radio from Trap Team, and the return of Sky Stones), and defeating enemies, you’ll be able to discover a wide range of new options. Some of these include the gear that we mentioned, new voices, auras, and pretty much everything that was featured on the customization screen. Your Imaginator will always be a work in progress, letting you constantly tweak it as you discover more options.

Then again, your character can have all the cool outfits in the world, but it means nothing if they don’t know how to fight. That’s where the new Skylander Senseis come into play. Your Imaginator has ten Battle Classes to choose from, determining how they will do battle against Kaos’ forces. After choosing between being a Brawler, Bowslinger or Sorcerer to name a few classes, we’ll be able to give our creations unique fighting abilities across four classifications, (weapon, elemental, secret and Soul Gem types specifically). From there, selecting a Sensei that’s proficient in that particular fighting style will lead to your Imaginator unlocking new weapon abilities to use for the matching class. From familiar faces like the reformed Wolfgang to newcomers, Ember and In order to get you to buy more than one of each type, the more Senseis you have, the higher your Imaginator level cap becomes. In other words, they won’t be able to get all that strong without a team of masters to guide them. Aside from mentoring your creations, each Sensei knows their own abilities that promise to be the strongest that the series has seen thus far. From what we know so far, it’s looking like this new set of characters will be the toys to get for the game this year.

If you’re worried about what role your old toys will play, every character will once again be playable, with some of the tracks from Superchargers returning for a racing mode to use your vehicles in. Traps will give the same items for inserting them into the game that they did in last year’s game, while classic characters will also pull double duty as Storytellers, giving your cast new missions to complete. One thing about the series is that it has yet to leave any of our past investments in the dust, so it’s great to see that this trend is continuing.

With so many new features coming to Skylanders Imaginators, it’s shaping up to be one of the standout entries as we head into the game’s sixth year. Skylanders Superchargers blew us away, leaving us feeling like it was the best game the series had produced, so this year’s version will have some big shoes to fill. But with what we’ve seen so far, (like Crash Bandicoot making an appearance as a Brawler Sensei), on top of what we haven’t thanks to our possible characters being dictated by the limits of our own imaginations, we’re left with seemingly countless possibilities that might live up to the challenge.

Skylanders Imaginators will release for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and Wii U on October 16.

 

What happens when you need to keep making games about a popular anime series that hasn’t made a new episode in years? Apparently, you pass it between developers! After Spike Chunsoft’s 3DS effort disappointed last year, Koei Tecmo and Omega Force, (the team behind Dynasty Warriors and its spin offs), are trying their hand at the giant slaying franchise with Attack On Titan. By turning the tables on their usual formula and putting the player in a mob of soldiers that serve as fodder for the Titans, our hands-on time at E3 gave us glimpses of the series done justice.

Attack On Titan is split up into two major gameplay sections. The primary play mode is when you’re in control of one of the human characters, who traverses the smoldering towns with their 3D Maneuvering Gear. As you would expect from a game bearing the anime’s name, movement was the most exciting part of the time I played, feeling like a Survey Corps bad ass as I swooped in and out of the Titan’s range. Of course, you’ll have to get the controls down first, which had a moderate learning curve before things felt natural.

Once they did however, combat was fast and fluid. Following the story of the anime, (which might look familiar since it’s the only story we’ve had animated for a long time), I made it my personal mission to make Mikasa look like as much of a pro under my control as she does in the source material, which I met with mixed results. Allowing us to target any limb on Titans both big and small that are powering through the towns allows you to get special advantages depending on the situation, whether you need to stop their movement or take away attacks with a successful amputation. Of course, the only way to finish one off is to slice off the nape of their neck, which is where I focused on most of the time. While it sounds simple enough, there’s a lot to take into account when lining up your perfect slice. You’ll need enough distance, momentum and timing to pull off the kill, and failing could lead to you being caught by one of the monsters. Running out of steam for your Gear and your blades going dull can also become a problem, forcing you to find new items to help you regroup. Trust me, there’s nothing worse than thinking you killed a powerful opponent, only to see your swords bounce off of them. To make matters worse, every kill is ranked, only furthering the embarrassment when you screw up.

But being a great Survey Corps member is about more than being able to kill enemies, because like Dynasty Warriors, there will be many times when you have to protect allies and key points on the map. Allowing too many of your comrades to die or letting Titans run wild will eventually lead to your game over’s, which is why it’s important to play to your character’s strengths. Mikasa for example, has a special ability that lets her slice up multiple limbs at once after it builds up. How other characters will play wasn’t shown as of now, but we’re looking forward to finding out as the game’s release draws closer.

When not slicing up your enemies, you’ll be able to punch them really hard instead. Taking on Eren’s Titan form, you’ll be able to give the opposing giants a taste of their own medicine. Perfect for when you want to set aside the technical gameplay of the core mode for some old fashioned button mashing, playing as a Titan allows you to jump far across the map with a single leap and charge into enemies at high speeds when not punching and kicking them to death. Sure, you’ll probably level a few houses in between, but let’s face it. Those people probably would’ve been killed one way or another.

Overall, I’m impressed by what we’ve seen so far, and can’t wait to dive deeper into this universe once again. With multiple missions and characters to discover, let’s hope the full version continues to deliver when it releases for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, PC and PlayStation Vita on August 30.

*WARNING: POTENTIAL EARLY GAME SPOILERS*

 

As fun as open world crime games can be, I’m kind of over the typical formula that most of them take. From Grand Theft Auto IIIThe Godfather: The Game and the first two Mafia games, each of these are examples of a title that asks the player to go through the motions as a low level mobster who climbs through the ranks to become one of its top members. This fatigue left me skeptical of Mafia III‘s ability to change my mind, figuring that it would be more of the same. One look at 2K’s Mafia themed E3 booth told me otherwise, which was only furthered by the details that would be revealed over the course of the conference. Once my time seeing the game in action was over, I went from having little interest to seeing it become one of my most anticipated games of 2016.

Yes, at the start of the game, you’re a low level member of a mob. Except this time, instead of joining the Italians, you’ll be part of the black mob in the fictional town of New Bordeaux, (inspired by 1960’s New Orleans). At least, that’s the plan. But it’s clear early on that the Italians are just as vicious in 1968 as they were in previous decades, wiping out their supposed allies in the process. As Lincoln Clay, the sole survivor of the black mob’s eradication and a Vietnam veteran who had just found a place to call home with the group, he’ll gather the enemies of his friend’s murderers and embark on a quest for revenge that will see the Italians get taken down piece by piece.

Even without all the details though, you’ll know you’re right outside of the 1970’s with an authentic feel, which includes speedometers, interiors and architecture that feels right out of the era. Serving as a mostly untapped time period within this genre, watching Mafia III in action felt instantly compelling because of it, not shying away from some of the more controversial topics at the time. With Vietnam being a guaranteed theme thanks to Lincoln’s background and hints at civil unrest due to the anti war sentiment rising throughout the country, at least one of the Italian lieutenants that you’re asked to take down was even hinted at being part of the Ku Klux Klan, showing in game renderings of a cross burning. As a black character, it will be interesting to see how far the game is willing to delve into the dark side of history at the time, especially while being fresh off of the Civil Rights movement.

But history aside, the reason why most of us play these games are to shoot up hundreds of bad guys and feel like a bad ass while doing it. New Bordeaux is divided up into districts, each of which is controlled by a different lieutenant that’s responsible for a different racket. Much like the early Assassin’s Creed games, Lincoln must gather information across a variety of missions before he can approach each target. Allowing players to choose between using stealth, starting shootouts or going in with a group of loyal AI partners to help you fight off enemies and escape with your life, we’re promised multiple ways to approach the same situations.

Once the territory is taken however, that’s where the real fight begins. It’s up to Lincoln to divide up the claimed parts of the city between his own three lieutenants, each of which have as much of a grudge against the Italians as you do. Cassandra, the leader of the town’s Haitian gang, Thomas Burke, who runs a local scrapyard when he’s not leading the Irish gang, and Vito Scaletta, the Mafia II protagonist who is aiding Lincoln after another stint in prison, (and an attempt at a normal life), each give you missions and support when out on the field, which can be called upon at various points in battle. At the end of the day though, they want power just as much as you do, which is why intense negotiations take place once each district is completed. The three underbosses will plead their case as to why you should give them your newly claimed land, each with different in-game benefits to go with the choice. The characters will remember what you’ve picked in the past, guilt tripping you for neglecting them while using their past success to convince you to pile more on top of them. Keeping in mind that you’re working with criminals, shunning one too many times can lead to them turning on you, unlocking bonus missions where you have to put their potential coup to an end before it gets started. Your choices will determine if you’ll ever come across one of these scenarios, but it’s definitely looking like the game will be worth playing multiple times to see the various scenarios play out.

A new setting, a new time period, a new approach to taking on missions, and a new level of consequence that comes with your choices. Atlus and SNK Playmore have delivered their next reveal trailer for the upcoming fighting game, The King of Fighters XIV. Showing off Team Official Invitation, the first full team of new characters, this odd group seems to have a few sinister surprises behind their varied personalities.

First up is Kukri, a mysterious hooded man who can control, and even dissolve into sand when attacking his opponents. Using these skills to teleport, do damage from both sides of the screen, and overwhelm his opponents with a tidal wave, the sand effects are some of the best visuals we’ve seen from the game to date.

Moving away from the supernatural in favor of straight up ass kicking, Mian draws inspiration from Chinese Operas and integrates that with her Bian Lian martial arts. Showing off some of her impressive looking combos, the only time the masked fighter shows her face is when she’s ready to unleash her most powerful attack to take down her opponent. In her case, looks can be very deceiving, in more ways than one.

Lastly is the team’s leader, Sylvie, who we got to try at E3 this year. As a former member of the NESTS organization from the KOF 99 – 2001, the seemingly wacky girl obtained power over electricity, which she isn’t afraid to unleash in battle. Aside from her unorthodox fighting style and appearance, she seems to be hiding a much darker side of herself, which peaks out when her strongest technique is pulled off. It makes you wonder what kind of power she really holds if she’s able to take the lead in a team as powerful as this one.

With that in mind, I can’t help but feel this team will play a major role in the game’s story. Aside from their team name, which implies that they’re special guests of the tournament, teams featuring all new characters have often been primary antagonists in the past. Sylvie’s change in demeanor only confirms this, which is more the reason as to why I can’t wait to play this when it releases on August 23 exclusively on the PlayStation 4.

At the Ubisoft Lounge during this year’s E3, I had the opportunity to play a short demo from the company’s new working title, For Honor!  For Honor is a game where the central gameplay focuses on a battles between Knights, Samurai, and Vikings in a war-torn world.

The demo jumps you right in the middle of the action where you’re trying to protect a fortress from oncoming invaders.  The demo is tutorial based, so everything happens as is necessary to learn the essential functions of the game.  The focus in particular is placed on movement, and combat.

First, you will find that movement feels really heavy.  This doesn’t have to be a bad thing–considering the soldiers are full clad in body armor, it almost seems appropriate for them to have a heavy feel.  You start as a higher ranked knight, and you can truly tell the difference between your character and the armies that surround you–you almost tower over the lower ranked knights.

One of the first fights places you in a sparring match with an enemy knight of the same rank.  The combat system is based on blocking and counterattacking–by mimicking your opponent’s stances, you can block their attacks and then follow up with attacks of your own.  There are buttons you can press to break their guard as well.  Some of the combat is reminiscent of the sword battles in Assassin’s Creed 2, before they started giving you extra tools of the trade to make combat easier.  It requires a lot of focus–at times you may stand there for even a minute straight, waiting for your opponent to make the first move.

You won’t always have to be forced into this one on one combat system, as the “small fry”, or lesser enemy soldiers, can be felled by one quick swipe of your sword.  It can feel exhilarating taking out a horde of smaller enemy soldiers as they rush towards you.  It’s also worth noting that environmental hazards can change the combat, such as taking damage by trying to walk through fire.  And like most other games, you can replenish health by grabbing and using the items as well.

The graphics are great, but may be defined based on the platform.  I believe I was playing it on PC using a controller similar to an Xbox One’s (I’m about 90% sure of that).  I never noticed any slowdown when many enemy soldiers were coming towards me, the graphics and texture of the bricks and stones on the fort showed great detail on age and weather, and even the battle scarred armor was pristine in its presentation.

For Honor looks like it’s shaping up to be an interesting swords combat and war game!  And I’m sure it’ll be even more interesting when we’re able to freely try each of the factions against each other, with contrasting swordplay styles!

2 Years ago Jackbox Games released The Jackbox Party Pack onto the world. The game contained 5 unique multiplayer party games that made use of the person’s phone, tablet, or PC. One of those 5 games was a small little title called Drawful. The game consisted of players using their devices to draw (usually badly) images of a random odd word given to them. After that, the other players would get write what they think the picture looks like, resulting in them having to find the real title of the picture amongst a sea of false answers.

The game became a breakout hit, so it’s pretty inevitable that the game would get a sequel. Well, Drawful 2 is finally here for the masses to consume, but has Jackbox Games added enough to make the game stand on its own? Time to find out!

The first thing you’ll notice when you boot up Drawful 2 is that you have 2 different options for gameplay now.  You still have the regular play drawful mode, but now due to an over abundance of suggestions, players are now finally able to create their own custom prompts using the brand new make your own game feature. This allows you to do just that, and it’s just as fun as it sounds. You can create entire custom episodes with custom names and prompts, and even share them online with other people. This is just one of the many great new social media features that really helps strengthen the game’s community.

Custom prompts aren’t the only new thing to Drawful 2 though, as you can now draw not only with 1, but 2 different colors! This feature may have seemed a bit silly to talk about when the game was initially announced, but it really does make a big difference. Adding a 2nd color to the mix really helps keep the pictures from looking completely stagnant and helps add an extra layer of creativity onto the pictures.

But wait! That’s not all. In tradition with making their games as stream friendly as possible, the game now includes a wealth of streaming options such as extended timers, twitch log in integration, and even the ability to censor unruly players and trolls trying to dampen the experience. Also going back to social media, one of the most surprisingly fun new additions is now being able to look at a gallery of all the drawings at the end of the game and being able to share them over Twitter (maybe make a future update that also allows people to post to Facebook also.)

Now, even though I adore this game for all that it’s done right so far, there are sadly a couple of complaints.  These mainly have to do with the fact that I encountered multiple servers crashes and errors during my play time with the game. I’m confident that the team over at Jackbox is working hard to resolve these issues, and that most of them could have been due to a large amount of people trying to access the servers at once, but it was still enough to disrupt us enough to where I had to reset the game at one point in order to access the game again.

Conclusion:

Drawful 2 is yet another gut busting party game that’s sure to become a main stay during your family game night. The new social media and streaming features are a very welcome enjoyment, and the ability to use 2 colors as well as make your own custom prompts helps extend the overall replayability of the game as well as strengthen its community.  The only thing currently holding the game back right now is it’s inconsistent connection errors, but hopefully that’ll be getting fixed soon.

Drawful 2 Hat

Most people say that they don’t care about the story when it comes to their fighting games. I am not one of those people. While discovering more about my favorite characters through their endings has always been a motivation of mine, few storylines over the years have endured as long as the war between Kazuya Mishima and his father, Heihachi. After numerous false deaths, fake outs, revivals and clonings, Bandai Namco is promising that the upcoming Tekken 7 would be the final battle between father and son, dubbed the Mishima Blood Saga. When you consider that Street Fighter‘s Akuma is part of the story on a mission to kill both of them, we have plenty of reason to believe death will stick this time.

Usually, crossover characters are bonuses, generally separate from the story presented in the main game. This isn’t so with Tekken 7, since Akuma’s purpose for entering the King of Iron Fist Tournament is to honor a promise he made to Kazumi, Kazuya’s mother and Heihachi’s ex wife, vowing to kill them if their war ever got out of hand. Considering a demon as powerful as Akuma owes her a favor, it’s no wonder that the Mishima matriarch serves as the big bad this time around. In battle, Akuma feels like an authentic Street Fighter character, having his own Super Meter, super movies, fireballs, and special attacks that can be strengthened in their EX versions.

Not to ignore the rest of the cast, each of the characters that make up the nearly 30 character roster, (which includes five newcomers aside from Akuma,) have the unique fighting styles and combos you would expect from the Tekken series. The biggest additions to combat this time around are the changes to the Rage system, with two new types of attacks that each fighter has at their disposal. Activated once a fighter’s health drops below a certain point, Rage doesn’t provide as much of an attack boost as it used to. Instead, new Rage Arts give the characters a one time use special attack that can help turn the tide of a losing battle in exchange for the use of the Rage for the rest of the round. Ranging from powerful super attacks, to full on transformations in the case of characters like Kazuya, and you’ll have a whole new dynamic thrown into the competitive mix. When considering how environmental damage, juggles and destructible floors already come into play, you’ll have plenty of ways to try to take out your enemy before they can use their Rage Art.

If you do find yourself on the defensive and need to create some space, the new Power Crush attack should go a long way to help you out. Somewhat similar to Focus Attacks in Street Fighter 4 or Counter Attacks in Pokken Tournament, these attacks can absorb damage while allowing the attack to push through, even when getting hit. As someone who has found themselves on the wrong end of a long combo string in the past, I’m more than willing to give this new attack a shot despite changing the game’s dynamic somewhat. After all, there’s no fun in getting beaten by long combo strings without a way to fight back, which is an issue the Power Crush is trying to alleviate.

All in all, Tekken 7 both looks and plays like a dream, making the wait for its early 2017 release date that much harder to bear, (Kuma?) Topping off the improvements to the story and battle mechanics with the best visuals the series has seen to date, complete with dramatic slow motion knockouts and the coolest Vs. screen I’ve ever seen, it’s good to see the team putting the Unreal Engine 4 to good use. I have not been shy over how much I love Gravity Rush. The PlayStation Vita exclusive that recently got ported to the PS4 remains one of the most creative, thoroughly satisfying games I’ve played in a long time, which is why I couldn’t be happier to find its sequel, Gravity Rush 2, on the E3 show floor. Sure, you have your Horizon‘s and God of War‘s standing in the spotlight, but can they Kratos or Aloy Gravity Kick enemies from 50 feet away? I didn’t think so. Thankfully, Kat’s only gotten better since her last adventure, and her familiar skill set was on full display.

While it was recently announced that the Gravity Queen would have multiple forms of gravity manipulation this time around, the demo only featured her skill set from the first game. If that sounds like a complaint, it’s far from it, because shifting gravity to pull Kat in different directions while both navigating the much larger city or attacking the returning Nevi threat is as satisfying as ever. After a brief tutorial explaining the controls, it was off to our first few missions, as the perpetual do-gooder proceeds to help the citizens of the new town she finds herself in.

One of the biggest complains lobbied at the original was its unreliable lock-on mechanics, leading Kat to often miss despite centering her flying kick or item toss right at her target. The most obvious improvement while playing the second game however, was that this problem no longer exists. Gone are the days where using her spiral attack results in hitting one or two enemies before aimlessly flying off into the distance, because all of her attacks, from the spiral to the kick, follow any nearby enemies for the duration of the attack. Throwing items in the environment at flying Nevi is even more viable this time around as well, thanks to Kat having a much easier time picking up multiple item. Unfortunately, hitting enemies with these objects is still an issue, not because of the lock-on, but because enemies had a bad habit of hiding behind obstacles for long periods of time. This meant spending way too much time trying to find the perfect position lob the large benches and chairs I was grabbing without them smashing into a tree. I normally would have said “screw it” and went for the kick, but this was part of the tutorial, so I didn’t have a choice.

Another small flaw I noticed in this early build was an increased amount of slowdown, which is surely the price being paid for the much larger, more vibrant city. The visuals themselves look even more incredible the second time around, with NPC’s that look like they exist outside of accidentally being launched by your gravity powers. Protecting items looks like it will still be a popular theme, since it was the only full mission in the demo before it drew to a close, but doing so will always be welcomed if it means beating down more Nevi. Especially when animations for moves such as Kat’s ground kick combo look so much more fluid this time around.

No, it’s not perfect, and is a bit rough around the edges, but I have high hopes for Gravity Rush 2 so far. Slowdown and aiming issues notwithstanding, the game looks and plays even better than before, with the gravity powers retaining the satisfying feeling they delivered back in 2012. With the promise of new ways to manipulate gravity coming to the final version, how could we not be excited?
