Okay so I don’t watch any of the Fast And The Furious movies and I for sure did not watch Fast Five. Titling the sixth movie after that Fast Six just seems lazy, right? So, in my eyes this movie had already struck out. That is until today. Joe Taslim of The Raid: Redemption has joined the cast of the new Fast And The Furious flick. Now if you have NOT seen The Raid by now then shame on you. If you have you may remember Taslim as Sergeant Jaka, team leader of the ill-fated SWAT raid operation who had some of the best fight scenes in the movie.

Taslim will play the villainous role of Jah, a cold-blooded killer who uses his martial arts and parkour skills to fight the pic’s protags, led by Paul Walker and Vin Diesel.

Dwayne Johnson, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson and Michelle Rodriguez are set to return for the sequel, which has added new blood in the form of MMA fighter Gina Carano and villain Luke Evans.

Wait Gina Carano is in it too? Now I am definitely seeing it. But now that I am sold on this movie it leads to me to wonder if I have to go rent Fast Five? Ugh.

The Bluth family reunion is coming. It feels like almost forever since we were told our beloved Arrested Development would be returning to us via Netflix. And some of us began to even doubt in it because we had seen nothing. Well, earlier this week Ron Howard tweeted a picture of a very special script.

And to make it even better, earlier today Jason Bateman tweeted two pics from the set featuring a certain cast member.

It really is happening. The show will start streaming in the first half of 2013 on Netflix. Excuse me I must go now because I’m afraid I just blue myself.

• THIS IS IT! The greatest era of the Marvel Universe starts here! From the ashes of AvX an all-new, all-different Avengers assemble!

We saw the Deathstroke mask in the teaser. Kelly Hu has been cast as China White. And now the CW has reportedly confirmed that longtime Suicide Squad member, Deadshot will be taking on Starling City’s Emerald Archer in the third episode of the upcoming series Arrow titled “Lone Gunmen”. They have not yet announced though who will be portraying the character.

Stephen Amell aka Arrow’s Oliver Queen has tweeted his take on the news. Apparently someone really wants Oliver dead as they’ve enlisted DC’s best assassins.

At first I was going to ignore this show…but now I may just have to watch it. Especially if they get Deadshot’s suit right unlike what Smallville. Let us forget about that show.

Check out this brand new TV spot for Total Recall featuring snippets of new footage!

Total Recall is an action thriller about reality and memory, inspired anew by the famous short story “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale” by Philip K. Dick. Welcome to Rekall, the company that can turn your dreams into real memories. For a factory worker named Douglas Quaid (Colin Farrell), even though he’s got a beautiful wife (Kate Beckinsale) whom he loves, the mind-trip sounds like the perfect vacation from his frustrating life – real memories of life as a super-spy might be just what he needs. But when the procedure goes horribly wrong, Quaid becomes a hunted man. Finding himself on the run from the police – controlled by Chancellor Cohaagen (Bryan Cranston) – there is no one Quaid can trust, except possibly a rebel fighter (Jessica Biel) working for the head of the underground resistance (Bill Nighy). The line between fantasy and reality gets blurred and the fate of his world hangs in the balance as Quaid discovers his true identity, his true love, and his true fate. The film is directed by Len Wiseman. The screenplay is by Kurt Wimmer and Mark Bomback and the screen story is by Ronald Shusett & Dan O’Bannon and Jon Povill. The producers are Neal H. Moritz and Toby Jaffe.

Total Recall hits theaters next Friday.

In a very surprising move Marvel has cancelled the first issue of Thanos: Son Of Titan that was supposed to be hitting shelves in October. This is especially surprising due to the amount of media coverage the character is getting as well as the amount of fans looking for Thanos filled comics. The sudden surge appeared after the character made his movie appearance in this years The Avengers in a mid-credit scene. he following appeared in Thursday’s “Marvel Mailer” update to retailers:

“*THANOS SON OF TITAN #1 (OF 5) & VAR (AUG120580-1, $2.99, FOC 09/24/12) has been cancelled.”

Thanos: Son of Titan, was set to tell the origin of the Marvel villain in a story by writer Joe Keatinge and artist Richard Elso, has received quite a bit of press even receiving an article in USA Today earlier this month. So, why the sudden cancellation? No official word on that as of yet. Perhaps it could just be a delay. We will be sure to keep you informed.

NBC’s new series Hannibal based on Thomas Harris’ novels has already had some big names attached to it. David Slade is set to direct with  Hugh Dancy, and Mads Mikkelsen already among the cast. Now according to Entertainment Weekly they just added another big name to the series. Lawrence Fishburne will be playing FBI Behavioral Sciences Unit Leader Jack Crawford.

Bryan Fuller, who is writing and producing the show, said:

“Laurence Fishburne is an iconic man who has been making his cinematic mark since Apocalypse Now and it’s a thrill not only to work with him but to see such a brilliant, sophisticated actor step into the shoes of Thomas Harris’ brilliant, sophisticated character… I cannot imagine a better cast for Hannibal than the one we’ve assembled.”

Thomas Harris’ novels have already been recreated on the big screen in movies like Silence Of The Lambs, Red Dragon, Hannibal, and Manhunter. The series will explore the early relationship between the renowned psychiatrist and his patient, a young FBI criminal profiler, who is haunted by his ability to empathize with serial killers.

Hannibal is set to premier mid-season on NBC.

With Jeremy Slater currently writing a script and Josh Trank attached to direct the movie, it definitely seems that we will be seeing The Fantastic Four hitting the big screen again soon. But who should play the iconic Marvel characters? Who should they go head to head with? Us at Geekscape have some ideas…

Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic (Andrew Lincoln)

Now, I know he may not be able to take time out of his busy schedule with The Walking Dead. But if Lincoln could I think he would a great choice for Reed as well as drawing plenty of fans of The Walking Dead in.

Susan Storm/The Invisible Woman (Chalize Theron)

Let’s keep it real ladies and gentlemen…we all want a sexy Sue Storm right? But we also want her to be kind of a bad ass. Who better than Charlize Theron to accomplish that?

Ben Grimm/The Thing (Joel Edgerton)

If the picture above doesn’t sell you then you may want to go watch Warrior. Edgerton is a great actor, looks the part and definitely has the body type.  The Thing should definitely be motion capture this time around versus being live action because that one really didn’t work out last time.

Johnny Storm/The Human Torch (Garrett Hedlund)

We’ve already seen him do the young and rebellious role before. He did a great job at it so why not let him do it again?

So, we have our team. Now who should we see as the fantastic family’s first villan?

Harvey Rupert Elder/The Mole Man (Eddie Marsan)

Wait, I am NOT making Dr. Doom the first villain the Fantastic Four go against? Yes, you read that correct. Because in the comics the first villain that they go head to head with is The Mole Man. And much like The Amazing Spider-Man I think we should have a few villains establishing the team while we have Doom in the background until it’s finally time to bring him in much like The Amazing Spider-Man is doing with Norman Osborn. And on that note…

Victor Von Doom pre-Dr. Doom (Jonathan Rhys Meyers)

Not only is he in the same age range as Andrew Lincoln (making sure of that due to them attending the same university together) but have you ever seen Meyers on The Tudors? Trust me when I say that if anyone out there is perfect to play a young Victor Von Doom it is this guy. Why not have him just be Dr. Doom you say? Because what we need is to establish that character. Make him interesting as we see his descent into madness. We don’t need to jump straight to the man in the mask until we know who the man is.

Would you see this Fantastic Four on the big screen? Or do you have anyone you would rather see in these roles? Sound off in the box below!

By now you’ve no doubt heard about the incident that took place at the midnight screening of The Dark Knight Rises in Colorado. Composer Hans Zimmer who has done the scores for all three of Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy, the upcoming Man Of Steel and much more has composed a track dedicated to the victims, their families, friends and will also donate all proceeds to the Aurora Victim Relief Organization.

“Aurora” is dedicated to those who lost their lives and were affected by the tragedy in Aurora, Colorado. I recorded this song in London in the days following the tragedy as a heartfelt tribute to the victims and their families. 100% of the proceeds will be donated to Aurora Victim Relief organization. First, we told you about the rumor about it being based on this story arc. Then we followed up with why it would be a brilliant thing to do. Well, now it looks like it is official. Twentieth Century Fox C.I.S. have reportedly confirmed and a Russian news site has posted information stating that the much anticipated sequel will be lifted from the pages of the Marvel comic’s and be titled X-Men: Days Of Future Past. Now while this will not be a direct adaptation of the storyline (cue: angry internet nerds and people who liked First Class but will not admit it) this is probably one of Fox’s best moves they can make with the franchise allowing them to introduce fan-favorite characters quite possibly without having to totally disregard stories they have already told. Well, minus X-Men Origins: Wolverine which I wish I could disregard from my own memory. With the film going into production in January we should definitely be expecting a flood of news starting soon.

A translation from the Russian site Starkindustries.ru:

Film Business Today, has confirmed the rumor that the continuation of the “First Class” was the official name of X-Men: Days of Future Past. The company Twentieth Century Fox CIS successfully managed the transfer of title:

“X-Men: Days Of Future past”

The sequel is scheduled to release July 18, 2014.

The Ultimate Universe was launched in 2000 with Ultimate Spider-Man, Ultimate X-Men in 2001, The Ultimates in 2002 and finally Ultimate Fantastic Four. These books had some of the best artists and writers that Marvel had to offer. The Ultimate imprint received praise for releasing some of the best stories at the time with fantastic artwork to accompany them. That is up until one major event…Ultimatum. Many people were burned and ultimate-ly disappointed by Ultimatum (yes…the pun was intended) and the imprint lost many readers afterwards. The story received mostly negative reviews and was even called “the ultimate nightmare” by IGN’s Jesse Schedeen.

However the current Ultimate Comics imprint is currently some of the best comics Marvel is putting out. There are three titles at the moment, Ultimate Comics: Ultimates, Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man and Ultimate Comics: X-Men with an Ultimate Comics: Iron Man mini-series on the way. Not only do these books have a current roster of amazing artists and writers (Sam Humphries recent issue of Ultimates that is on stands now was phenomenal) but they have a great storyline starting by the name of Divided We Fall. If you’re looking to read a storyline this summer, this is the story to read. The events leading up to this have been going on for months now some starting all the way back to Ultimate Fallout. The map below gives you just a small idea of what is currently going on in the Ultimate books.

Focusing on three central characters — Kitty Pryde, Captain America and Miles Morales — “Divided We Fall” is anchored by writers Brian Wood (Ultimate Comics X-Men), Sam Humphries (Ultimate Comics Ultimates) and Brian Michael Bendis (Ultimate Comics Spider-Man) and sees the rise of a new villain who plunges the Ultimate Universe into chaos, as The Ultimates are pitted against S.H.I.E.L.D. On top of that, Marvel is promoting that Cap will make a fateful “decision” during the course of the story; one that has never been done in a superhero comic.

It’s been stressed that this is not a typical cross-over but rather a concurrent event that will affect each of the Ultimate Comics line’s three titles in different ways. The event started recently with Ultimate Comics: X-Men #14 and this weeks Ultimate Comics: Ultimates #13, which sees the return of Captain America who has been MIA since Ultimate Fallout. If you decide to go back and catch up, it may be difficult to buy some of the individual issues but The Death Of Spider-Man, Ultimate Fallout, Ultimate Comics X: Origins and volume one of most of the books is available in trade form with volume two of Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man out now and the rest hitting shelves soon. This is shaping up to be the comic event of the summer and if you aren’t reading it you are definitely missing out because it has started off strong and left us fans wanting more and wanting it now. Divided We Fall continues next week in Ultimate Comics: Spider-Man #13!

We told you what Bat-stories inspired Christopher Nolan’s films. Did you read those? Do you still have an itch for more? Well have no fears! Well, except for the Batman. Fear him. But  anyway…I am here to give you the best Bat-stories you should read that you probably haven’t yet.

– Justice League Of America: Tower Of Babel by Mark Waid and Howard Porter

So, if there are any two stories that pretty much solidify that Batman can kick anyone’s ass it’s Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns, where Batman outwits and outduels Superman (yes…Batman HAS kicked Superman’s ass numerous times now), and Mark Waid’s Tower Of Babel. Batman has a plan for everything. Batman states that his plans were a cautionary measure that he devised after the Injustice League swapped bodies with the Justice League with the aid of the alien tyrant Agamemno years earlier . Recognizing the dangers of villains gaining control of the heroes, he creates fail-safes in case such a situation ever happens again. The event also inspires him to create plans to stop the other heroes if they should go rogue on their own. But when an enemy unlocks those secret plans and uses them. Well we get to see Batman’s obsessive planning come to fruition and some not so happy JLA members after it. Definite must read. This arc is the basis for the animated Justice League: Doom.

Batman: The Cult by Jim Starlin and Bernie Wrightson

Most of you think that no one can break the Batman (well, minus Bane…but this is before Knightfall) Well, you would be wrong. In The Cult, Batman is kidnapped, drugged, and broken down by Deacon Blackfire to a point we have never really seen him hit before.  While most of Batman’s great stories rely on his rogues gallery that is not the case here.
Starlin and Wrightson build a captivating story that truly shows Batman at his most desperate. There are also some wicked hallucinations in this story that make you wonder who is the most messed up person to write a Batman story.

Batman: The Black Mirror by Scott Snyder and Jock

This is probably Snyder’s best work pre-New 52 right here. The concept of the story is that Gotham City is its own character that reflects its seedy nature upon those who try and protect it. The story focuses on two main protagonists, Dick Grayson aka the newly appointed Batman (don’t worry…no spoiler alert needed for that) and Commissioner Gordon. Gotham puts both of the city’s protectors to the test in this one. Dick discovers what it truly means to be Batman in Gotham as he sees a darker side of the city that he has never really seen before. And on the other side Gordon’s estranged son James Gordon Jr. makes his return to Gotham, bringing a dark past with him. I won’t go into any more detail here because I actually want you to read the story. You know you want to.

Batman: Under The Hood Volume One And Two by Judd Winnick and Doug Mahnke

In 1988, writer Jim Starlin wrote a Batman story titled A Death In The Family that featured Jason Todd, the second Robin, being beat to death by The Joker with a crowbar. Intense right? Well, keep in mind the fans voted for him to die. The story of Jason Todd remained untouched for about  15 years, until the character re-appeared in the Hush storyline. Even though it was revealed that it was Clayface posing as Jason questions still arouse about just where Jason Todd was, because it was not in his grave. Black Mask has seized control of Gotham City’s criminal underworld, but his rule is challenged by the mysterious Red Hood, who has hijacked a crate full of 100 pounds of Kryptonite. You read that one right, Kryptonite. But the rest is meant to be read. This story sees the resurrection of a character that no one cared about to the point they wanted dead into one of DC’s coolest current characters. Read Red Hood And The Outlaws and disagree with me. I dare you. This story also inspired the animated Batman: Under The Red Hood which is arguably one of DC’s best animated films.

Batman: Earth One by Geoff Johns and Gary Frank

This right here is my favorite. Much like Christopher Nolan did with his movies we get a modern re-telling and updated version of Bruce’s origin story with a few minor tweaks. Earth One doesn’t stick completely with the original stories of Bruce Wayne’s metamorphosis into Batman, but that’s a good thing. We get a fresh new take on it that makes a story we all know feel like something we have never read before. One of the most interesting parts of this story is that as he tries to fill out his role as Batman, Bruce Wayne fails more times than he succeeds, but succeeds where it counts. This makes him feel more human and relatable just like the Nolan movies. So if you’re one of those who are open minded to seeing different takes on characters this one is totally for you. If you’re not well, you may not want to pick this up.

Runners up:

Batman/Grendel by Matt Wagner

Batman: Son Of The Demon by Mike W. Barr and Jerry Bingham

So, let’s be real here for a minute. As much as we love Captain America…his suit just really is kind of goofy when you look at it these days. Much in part due to the more military like suits we saw Chris Evans sporting in Captain America: The First Avenger and The Avengers. Those suits looked really great on the screen. With the upcoming Marvel NOW! event we will see Cap getting a costume update courtesy of artists Jerome Opena (Uncanny X-Force) And John Cassaday (Astonishing X-Men) and I can honestly say…I am into them.

Editor Tom Breevoort on the design:

“The approach and the thought was very simple: we wanted to modernize Cap’s outfit so as to reflect the gear worn by actual soldiers, to convey that sense of the character visually. Every costume design change is really change for change’s sake, and certainly Cap’s costume is a classic. But that said, it’s been updated before, and so long as what we ended up with still looked like and gave you the silhouette of Captain America, that was what was important to me. We just did years of stories in which Bucky wore a variant of Cap’s costume, and people were able to accept it just fine, and still recognize and react to him as Captain America. Same thing here. We weren’t really thinking about the movie incarnation per se, though it’s difficult to avoid it I suppose. But even there, Cap’s already had two completely different suits in the movies, in CAP: FIRST AVENGER and then in MARVEL’S THE AVENGERS. What we were really going for, more than anything, was the feeling of Cap being an actual soldier. At the outset, I did some research and collected a bunch of different photographs of modern military gear, helmets and what-have-you, and they all informed the design we eventually settled on.”

If you have not been reading it for some reason Scott Snyder’s Batman is THE book to read in the New 52. Him and Greg Capullo have been doing a fantastic job so far and just wrapped up the critically acclaimed Court Of Owls storyline and has teased us with The Joker’s return in highly anticipated Death Of The Family. Fans cannot wait to see what Scott Snyder does with The Joker (and trust me…us at Geekscape are in that group) but now he’s teased us with another villain he will be doing a storyline with directly after Death In The Family that fans will definitely be eager to read. A villain that made a brief appearance in the first issue of Batman but has not been seen since then.

That’s right we will be seeing Edward Nigma, one of the only villains to deduce Batman’s true identity, joining the New 52 in 2013. We can’t wait over here to see what kind of twisted riddles and puzzles Scott Snyder has brewing in his brain.

The first footage from The Wachowski’s and Tom Tykwer’s (director of Run Lola RunCloud Atlas has made its way online and looks utterly phenomenal. The adaptation of David Mitchell’s epic labrynth of a novel stars Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Susan Sarandon, Keith David, Jim Broadbent, Hugo Weaving, Jim Sturgess, Doona Bae, Ben Wishaw, James D’Arcy and Zhou Xun.

The powerful, inspiring epic Cloud Atlas explores how the actions and consequences of individual lives impact one another throughout the past, the present and the future, as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero, and a single act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution

Cloud Atlas is set to be released on October 26, 2012.

Christopher Nolan made it clear that he had zero intention of mentioning The Joker in The Dark Knight Rises as a sign of respect to the late Heath Ledger. While some people may not be fond of that choice, I think it was in good taste to do so. But still some people wondered “Just where was he?!” Greg Cox’s novelization of the movie may just shed some light and give you an answer. An excerpt:

Now that the Dent Act had made it all but impossible for the city’s criminals to cop an insanity plea, it (Blackgate Prison) had replaced Arkham Asylum as a preferred location for imprisoning both convicted and suspected felons. The worst of the worst were sent here, except for the Joker, who, rumor had it, was locked away as Arkham’s sole remaining inmate. Or perhaps he had escaped. Nobody was really sure. Not even Selina.

Just in case you forgot, during a segment of The Dark Knight Rises Selina Kyle was held at Blackgate Prison for a short time.

Today Warner Bros. has confirmed that they will be moving Gangster Squad from September 7 to January 11, 2013. This comes after the recent shooting in Colorado in order to allow the filmmakers to excise a certain scene from movie that depicts the agents spraying machine-gun fire into a crowded movie theater from behind the screen.

They will be shooting an alternate murder spree scene that does not take place in a movie theater. They are hoping that the six months of breathing room will help return the focus to the L.A. mob storyline. Well, that and girls swooning over Ryan Gosling.

Source: Deadline

Apparently a recent casting call has gone out revealing that producers are looking for extras that are particular experts with fire. Could this possibly mean in the sequel we may see Thor and company exploring Muspelheim, the realm of eternal fire, home of the fire demons and their ruler Surtur?

It’s not entirely unlikely being that he was featured in the video game for the original movie. Maybe we will Thor travelling across the different dimensions? Maybe not. This is entirely speculation right now but would this be something you would want to see?

It’s been almost a year since we have heard much about the movie adaptation of Mass Effect. Even though many fans were let down by the ending to Mass Effect 3 I can assure you that the movie is still moving forward. What I can’t really tell you is what speed it’s moving forward at. Mark Protosevich (Thor, I Am Legend) has reportedly finished the script for the film that will be produced by Avi Arad, Jon Nashik and Thomas Tull for Legendary/Warner Bros. The film was supposed to come out this year but is apparently shelved right now due to Protosevich having moved on to work on JJ Abrams and Edgar Wright’s Collider. This now brings many to wonder if we will ever actually see this film go into production or will it end up just like the Halo film that we never got?

One of the most anticipated movies in Marvel’s “Phase Two” is Captain America: The Winter Soldier. When announced at San Diego Comic-Con fans nearly lost it. Hell..even Ed Brubaker lost it and even tweeted “HOLY SHIT” when he found out about it. The Huffington Post recently sat down with Anthony Russo, one half of the directing team behind the sequel, and had a little chat about the movie. Below are some of the highlights of the interview.

When asked what they thought landed them such a big project:

Well, first of all, Marvel’s this incredible company that has shown in the past that they think outside the box with directors. I mean, it’s shocking the people they’ve hired, over and over again, and they’ve had great success as a result. They like character, and they like storytelling and they like fun. We were surprised, but they were big fans of “Community” and you can sort of draw a line between some things we did on “Community” and a Marvel movie.

How they sold themselves to get the job directing the sequel:

We were comic book geeks from a young age and big fantasy geeks. We got to talk to them in detail about that history. They knew that we understood the brand really well and the characters really well. It was a long process, actually, of talking to them over and over again, through a series of meetings over a long period of time. And I think they just — we were really passionate about the movie, incredibly passionate about the movie. They felt that, and they felt like it was the right match.

In regards to what appealed to them about Ed Brubaker’s “Winter Soldier” story:

Well, we like the [story.] I can’t talk too much about specifics, that’s the way Marvel handles things. I can say in general that there’s sort of a darker, edgier sensibility at work there that we found appealing, and that is going find its way into Captain [America] in the modern day.

When asked if we would possibly be seeing World War II flashbacks:

Certainly Cap has this complicated history. We’re making the movie for first-time viewers, not just for fans, so, because Cap does have this complicated history — he was this skinny guy who became a super-soldier, he was born back then and he’s living [now] — in the storytelling, you need to convey that to an audience who doesn’t know Cap’s story.

When asked if the expected heavy visual effects were intimidating to them:

They said to us early on in the interview process, “We don’t expect you to know anything [about special effects and so forth] — you don’t have to know everything about this stuff, because we’re here for that.” They’re very respectful of directors. They’re an amazing company to work with.

In regards to if any of the comic creators were involved and have offered advice:

We’re actually going to have lunch with Brubaker soon. But no, they haven’t been involved. In the same way that they would develop a new comic-book series, they give its own space to develop. But certainly everybody is aware [of what’s in the comics], has read everything, is aware of all their other material. But they do like each thing to be its own, organic process, which is nice.

Jay Baruchel (She’s Out Of My League, Goon) is nearing a deal to join the cast of Robocop. He is one of the last major players to join the upcoming remake of the 1987 sci-fi flick. The film begins shooting this September with Joel Kinnaman, Hugh Laurie, Samuel L. Jackson, Gary Oldman, Abbie Cornish and Jackie Earle Haley already in the cast.

Baruchel will play the head of marketing for Omnicorp, the company that is building the police cyborg. While best known for his roles in comedic movies it is definitely not his first non-comedic role. So far this film is off to a really good start.

Earlier this week Christian Bale released a statement expressing his sympathy to the victims of the shooting in Colorado. Now it seems Bale has gone above and beyond and paid a visit to the victims of the incident. Bill Voloch, interim president of Medical Center of Aurora, said that The Dark Knight Rises star spent about two and a half hours visiting patients at the hospital.

“The patients were really happy to meet Bale,” Voloch said. “They are obviously big fans of his movies. They wanted to see Batman and were really pleased to see Bale.”

Bale also met with the officers and medical technicians that first responded to the incident. He spent about ten minutes with each person and made sure to visit each one.

“It was good for the patients,” Voloch said. “We hope it was therapeutic for them, and all the staff really appreciated him coming.”

Bale visited this hospital of his own choice and not representing Warner Bros. The executive vice president from Warner Bros. stated:

“Mr. Bale is there as himself, not representing Warner Brothers”

Kudos Mr. Bale. You really are the hero these people deserve and need right now.
