Update #1

There have already been reports of Good Guy J.J. Abrams buying pizzas for the campers for the main hall. So anticipation must be high!

What other news are you must looking forward to? let us know in the comments. MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU!

Briefly: It seems crazy, it being 2015 and all, but for some strange reason, the Star Wars saga has never (legally) been available on digital platforms.

This is all set to change this Friday, April 10th, when the entire saga (in all of its Special Edition glory) will debut on on digital platforms globally. All six films will be available, and they’re also set to include a batch of brand new extras.

Here’s the announcement from StarWars.com:

The Star Wars films will soon become more powerful than you can possibly imagine: the classic series is going digital for the first time ever.

As anticipation builds for the December release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the first new film in the Star Wars saga in a decade, The Walt Disney Studios, Lucasfilm Ltd., and 20th Century Fox today announced the upcoming release of The Star Wars Digital Movie Collection. All six epic films in the saga, from The Phantom Menace to Return of the Jedi, will be available on Digital HD globally beginning Friday, April 10.

“Since the debut of the first film nearly 40 years ago, Star Wars has become a worldwide phenomenon with legions of fans from every generation,” said Alan Bergman, president, The Walt Disney Studios. “It’s only fitting that audiences enjoy this legendary saga and its many fascinating behind-the-scenes stories on a wide variety of platforms, and we’re very excited to finally bring all six films to Digital HD for the first time.”

“We’re thrilled that fans will be able to enjoy the Star Wars saga on their digital devices wherever they go,” commented Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. “These films broke new ground in technology, design, sound, and visual effects, and we’ve created some very special bonus material which delves into the saga’s rich history, including new and never-before-released conversations between legendary Star Wars artists — the masters who helped George bring his iconic universe to life.”

With Star Wars: Episodes I-VI available for purchase as a complete digital movie collection and individually, viewers will have the Rebel forces at their beck and call across their favorite devices anywhere — sunbathing at the beach, relaxing in their living room with friends, or waiting to board a flight to Endor (or elsewhere).

Plus, unlike Lando’s bargaining with Darth Vader, this deal is getting better all the time: Enhancing the movie collection are a host of never-before-seen special features including Star Wars: Discoveries from Inside and insightful Conversations between key contributors from across this celebrated film franchise, plus a curated collection of classic Star Wars extras from each film.

And a trailer for the upcoming collection:

It’s been some time since I’ve watched through the entire saga, and I haven’t owned it since it first released on DVD, so I could definitely see myself picking up this collection on iTunes. Will you be picking up the saga in its new, non-physical format? Sound out below!

Briefly: While we’re all twiddling our thumbs until December 18th, Disney is certainly not standing still. The studio today officially revealed and dated the first Star Wars spinoff, and also announced the release date for Episode VIII.

Bob Iger announced the news at today’s Disney shareholders meeting. Here’s what was revealed, straight from StarWars.com:

Rogue One is the title for the first film in a unique series of big-screen adventures that explores the characters and events beyond the core Star Wars saga. Rogue One will be directed by Gareth Edwards (MonstersGodzilla) and written by Oscar nominee Chris Weitz (CinderellaAbout a BoyAntz). The first actress cast is Felicity Jones, who garnered an Academy Award nomination and critical acclaim for her performance in The Theory of Everything. The idea for the story of Rogue One came from John Knoll, an Academy Award-winning visual effects supervisor and chief creative officer at Industrial Light & Magic. He will executive produce along with Simon Emanuel (The Dark Knight RisesFast & Furious 6) and Jason McGatlin (TintinWar of the Worlds). Kathleen Kennedy and Tony To (Band of BrothersThe Pacific) are on board to produce and John Swartz (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) will co-produce. The film starts shooting this summer in London and is due for release on December 16, 2016.

In addition, Iger confirmed that Rian Johnson will write and direct Star Wars: Episode VIII. The film, which continues the saga after the events of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, is set for release on May 26, 2017 — forty years and a day after the release of Star Wars: A New Hope in 1977. Johnson is widely considered one of cinema’s most gifted young filmmakers, having directed the modern sci-fi classic, Looper, as well as Brick and The Brothers Bloom. He was also behind the camera for three episodes of the critically-acclaimed TV series Breaking Bad, including “Ozymandias,” which series creator Vince Gilligan named as the best installment of the show. Kathleen Kennedy and Ram Bergman, producer of LooperDon JonBrick, and The Brothers Bloom, are on board to produce.

I have to say that I’m beyond excited for both of these films. I was a big fan of last year’s Godzilla, and can’t wait to see what Gareth Edwards can do when he’s taken to space (and who doesn’t love Felicity Jones). On the flipside, both Brick and Looper from Rian Johnson are films I’ve watched a multitude of times, and as many issues as Looper had, it was still quite the incredible, thought provoking production. I’m really looking forward to seeing what he can do with a (probably much) bigger budget, and a vastly larger universe.

So, in case you forgot, Rogue One is coming on December 16th, 2016, while Episode VIII will drop on May 26, 2017. That’s a lot of Star Wars.

This story’s buzz is already winding down, I heard it in the morning radio news so you know it’s basically a dinosaur now. But as I keep reading comments on other blogs (a mistake, I know), I feel like it’s worth clarifying how big of a deal this still is.

For those who don’t know, in the upcoming Star Wars novel Lords of the Sith, an LGBTQ supporting character will be introduced who is driven by the death of her wife.

From NPR:

Star Wars is getting its first official LGBT character. Her name is Moff Delian Mors, and she’s a character in Paul S. Kemp’s upcoming Star Wars: Lords of the Sith novel. Penguin Random House describes Mors as

“Moff Delian Mors is a supporting character in Star Wars: Lords of the Sith. She was a promising officer of the Empire, who was assigned to an undesirable post at the far end of the galaxy. At nearly the same point in her life, her wife was killed in a transport accident, and the weight of these burdens led to Delian becoming lax in her duties, and left her personal life in disarray. The events of Star Wars: Lords of the Sith occur a few years after her loss.

The novel is scheduled for release on April 28th.

Editor Shelly Shapiro had this to say in the Full of Sith (great title) podcast:

“It’s not something I really think about, it just makes sense. There should be diversity in Star Wars. You have all these different species and it would be silly to not also recognize that there’s a lot of diversity in humans. If there’s any message at all, it’s simply that Star Wars is as diverse (or more so because they have alien species) as humanity is in real life and we don’t want to pretend it’s not. It just felt perfectly natural.”

Lords_of_the_Sith

What’s worth clarifying here is that, yes and no, this is and isn’t the first gay character in Star Wars. But it really kind of is.

The collateral damage/blessing from the Disney purchase was the giant sweep of Star Wars extended universe material — countless comic books, novels, video games, etc. — which was given the umbrella “Legends” label. The stuff that is now “official” canon are the core movies, the animated series, and I think a few of the video games. That’s it. The giant rack of Star Wars books you see in the sci-fi section of Barnes & Noble don’t count anymore, not that they really ever did.

No matter what progressive comments the extended universe tackled, they didn’t impact. It’s unfortunate, but you have to at least see that. Even Knights of the Old Republic, which was an insanely popular video game, had a lesbian Jedi in Juhani, but people aren’t naming their kids after her like they did Luke. (Besides, Old Republic is “Legends” now.)

The giant sweep resulted in nerd rage from cargo shorts-wearing fanboys awhile back, and I will admit it is a tiny bit condescending to the devoted fans who have lived almost forty years with this stuff. But really, is even half of the Star Wars EU worth exploring? No doubt I’m sure there are amazing stories and adventures, but not all of that could be literary or artistic gold. By its sheer numbers there have to be duds. It’s fine if you liked it, but when you look around and realize you’re the only one, that’s gotta say something about its quality. Our own Jonathan London spoke about art and its resonance in The People vs. George Lucas: Art isn’t just the work of an artist, it’s the culture that embraces it. My culture didn’t embrace The Green Hornet movie even though I think it’s an awesome piece of work. Power Rangers was the first American TV show to star teenaged superheroes of color, but people don’t exactly dwell on that fact do they?

So don’t take it too hard when I say the Star Wars extended universe wasn’t really that important. No, I’m not spitting on the artists who made that stuff, but the EU was just a big-ass pit everyone threw their stuff into and collected a check from.

This new character, Moff Delian Mors does matter. She really, seriously is now, the first official canon gay character introduced in the ultra-corporate, four-quadrant-pleasing franchise behemoth that we know and love as Star Wars. While we may or may not see this character in any of the upcoming movies (I hope we do), face it: her creation is worthy of news.

Besides, our stories are growing and becoming more diverse. Is that a bad thing to buzz about?

Also, it’s a fucking book and she isn’t even the main character. You don’t need to read it if you’re so worked up about it.

Disney has announced that it will be offering “Star Wars Day at Sea” coming to Disney Cruise Line starting in 2016.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=anylofhzKjA

On select sailings aboard the Disney Fantasy cruise ship, the company will feature a day-long celebration featuring Star Wars characters, activities, parties, and more. Disney will have screenings of the Star Wars movies and of the animated series Star Wars Rebels.

Guests will get a chance to meet and greet with Darth Vader, Chewbacca, Boba Fett, Stormtroopers and most likely Disney Characters dressed up as your favorite Star Wars Character like on Star wars weekend. Kids will have a chance to learn some lightsaber moves from a Jedi Master in a Jedi Training Academy experience.

1012ZW_1434MS-742x495-550x366

The deck stage will have a celebration of the Star Wars saga in a special show, then end the evening with a Star Wars themed fireworks display featuring lighting, sound effects, lasers and Star Wars music.

Cruise

Adults entering the night clubs will feel like they stepped into the Mos Eisley cantina scene, where characters and cantina music set the mood as Star Wars-themed specialty cocktails are served.

1012ZW_0036MS-666x999-400x600

With the Success of Star Wars weekend this move from Disney was a no-brainer. As a previous guest on the Disney Cruise lines, they are swapping out The Pirates of the Caribbean theme for the Star Wars theme and it sounds freaking awesome. I may have to book a trip for next year and report on this. Hey Jonathan, can i write this off as a work expense?

This week I sat down with Chelsea Christer the brains behind the The Matches documentary. We talk about what the band means to her, the way she got started in filmmaking and her Dr. Who.

I thought Scarlett Johansson kicking more ass was enough cool news of the day. Now, according to Twitchfilm, more asses shall be kicked! This time by actual ass-kickers Iko Uwais, Yayan Ruhian, and Cecep Arif Rahman. You don’t know those names but you know their ass-kicking well, because they kicked tons of ass in Gareth Evans’ The Raid and The Raid 2. This is so kick-ass!

From Twitchfilm:

It would appear that the force is set to awaken in Indonesia.

Though there has been no comment whatsoever from any of the performers or their representation, Twitch has learned that a key trio of performers from Gareth Evans’ The Raid and The Raid 2 – leading man Iko Uwais, Mad Dog / Prakoso actor Yayan Ruhian and The Raid 2 finale fighter Cecep Arif Rahman, credited simply as The Assassin – will all appear in JJ Abrams’ upcoming Star Wars: Episode 7 – The Force Awakens.

I can’t contain my excitement for this. There is one redeeming part of The Phantom Menace and in my opinion it was Ray Park as Darth Maul introducing proper martial arts to this huge universe. Now it seems everyone will actually be kung-fu fighting (OK, silat, but let me have my aged pop culture references).

Just imagine this fight for a second, okay? Hardcore, brutal penchak silat mixed with sci-fi mysticism. The way they handle the kris and kujang are a gory spectacle, but now picture it with force pushing, lightning bolts, big-ass giant force leaps, and LIGHTSABERS with PENCHAK SILAT.

Holy shit, you guys.

But aside from the martial arts? There was a big, noisy hoopla over John Boyega as a black Storm Trooper or whatever nonsense some dumb people came up with. Considering that in all six previous Star Wars films there were just two black people in a predominant role, I thought it was totally amazing the first thing we see of Star Wars was Boyega’s sweaty mug. And then people had to say a bunch of dumb things. (But I absolutely loved how Boyega responded.) But now, it seems the ever-expanding cast of this much-hyped movie is truly reflecting our diverse world. For all the Asian influences Star Wars modeled itself from, there was a severe lack of any Asian faces, even in this galaxy far, far away. Imagine how slightly different our cultural perceptions would be if Seven Samurai star Toshiro Mifune had accepted the role of Obi-Wan like George Lucas had wanted.

It is currently unknown what roles Uwais, Ruhian, and Rahman will be playing, and from the looks of it they probably won’t even be speaking roles at all. Based on their skills and how they were announced, I imagine they’ll be playing raiders or assassins of some sort, they will have the spotlight for a big martial arts set piece and vanish afterwards. They weren’t introduced in the initial casting announcements, and principal photography is already finished. I reiterate I’m only speculating, for all we know Iko Uwais is playing Luke Skywalker’s son! (Haha, JK, but seriously could you imagine?) Their roles may be small but in the realm of our pop culture headspace? Their roles are going to be huge.

I’m seriously about to pop in The Raid and The Raid 2 again because that’s how stoked I am about this news.

Following the official (and officially awesome) teaser trailer from a few weeks back, Disney has just revealed the names of some of the characters we’ll be seeing in next years Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

And they did it in the style of the classic Star Wars Topps trading cards. This is so freaking cool.

Here we go:

Finn

Kylo-Ren

Millennium-Falcon

Poe-Dameron

Rey

Stormtroopers

X-Wings

BB-8

Pretty damn cool, huh? Abrams revealed the images to EW earlier today, and also noted that the numbering on the cards is important. Get speculating!

The day we’ve all been waiting for is finally here! No! Not Black Friday! I’m talking about the arrival of the new Star Wars teaser trailer that we DON’T have to go to the theaters to enjoy (but we still probably should ‘cuz big screen and all)!

This trailer doesn’t give us much, but we do get to see some amazing new tweaks to the Star Wars universe, including a cool ball droid, a tri-saber, the new look Stormtroopers and shots of newcomers John Boyega and Daisy Ridley in action.

Many of us have been skeptical since the Prequels, keeping our growing excitement at bay, but when that John Williams score kicks in and you see the Millennium Falcon take on some tie fighters you can’t help but get those old familiar chills from your childhood!

Too bad those of us in the US have to wait until December 18, 2015 to see the rest!

Briefly: The latest episode of Machinima’s bad-ass Super Power Beat Down is here, and it makes for what must be the coolest matchup yet: Batman vs. Darth Vader.

Instantly, you’d think that Batman wouldn’t have a chance against the power of the Force, but he definitely has some tricks up his sleeve, doesn’t he? As Machinima notes, “This will be Batman’s third appearance and Darth Vadar’s second appearance in the beloved live-action series that pits two super powered legends in a winner-take-all battle – with the victor determined by more than a 1/4 million fans who cast their votes on the SPBD home page. The Caped Crusader is currently 1-1 on SPBD, with a decisive victory over Deadpool and a crushing defeat at the hands of Wolverine. Vader, meanwhile won his only death match as he took down Gandalf in 2012.”

The show averages an impressive 1.8 million views per episode, which is definitely a testament to how freaking cool it is.

You can take a look at the latest episode below, and be sure to let us know who you think should win!

Star Wars: Episode VII is no longer Star Wars: Episode VII! J.J. Abram’s film’s is now Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, Disney and Lucasfilm just announced!

It was also announced that principal photography has been completed after beginning in May of this year.

star_wars_ep7

Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens is set to hit theaters Dec. 18, 2015.

The characters (and actors!) of Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), Han Solo (Harrison Ford), Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew) and Princess Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher) will return while new actors include Andy Serkis, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac and Max von Sydow.

Star Wars Rebels: Spark of Rebellion offered a great start to what looks to be a stellar new chapter in the Star Wars story. Maybe you’d like to relive the magic again and again, or maybe you missed it on Disney XD the first time around.

In any case, we’re giving you a chance to get your hands on your very own copy of the Star Wars: Spark of Rebellion DVD! We’ve got five copies up for grabs in total, so get started by rewatching the movie’s trailer below, and keep on reading to learn how you can win one yourself!

Starring a small band of heroes — Sabine, Kanan, Hera, Ezra, Zeb, and Chopper — Star Wars Rebels is set in a time where the Empire rules through fear and shrouds the galaxy in darkness. This trailer offers many new glimpses at sequences from the show, including the starship Ghost chased by TIE Fighters; young Ezra watching as a Star Destroyer looms overhead; Stormtroopers marching; a zero-g fight between our heroes and Imperials; and Kanan, a secret Jedi, assembling his lightsaber and preparing for battle. It ends, however, with an Imperial officer reporting to the Inquisitor — the Empire’s Jedi hunter, seen and heard here for the first time. Star Wars Rebels takes place between Star Wars: Episode III and IV as the Empire tightens its grip on the galaxy and a rebellion begins to form.

This giveaway is open to all US and Canadian residents, and entry is pretty simple. Here’s what you need to do:

Briefly: The rebels are coming.

Disney has just announced the anticipated premiere date for their phenomenal-looking new series Star Wars Rebels.

The series will begin with a one-hour movie titled Star Wars Rebels: Spark of Rebellion, which will be available to DisneyXD members on September 29th, while us regular folk will have to wait until its television premiere on Friday, October 3rd at 9 Eastern.

The series itself will begin to air just ten days later on October 13th. The story unfolds during a dark time when the evil Galactic Empire is tightening its grip of power on the galaxy. Imperial forces have occupied a remote planet and are ruining the lives of its people. The motley but clever crew of the starship Ghost – cowboy Jedi Kanan, ace pilot Hera, street-smart teenager Ezra, the “muscle” Zeb, warrior firebrand Sabine, and cantankerous old astromech droid Chopper – is among a select few who are brave enough to stand against the Empire. Together, they will face threatening new villains, encounter colorful adversaries, embark on thrilling adventures and become heroes with the power to ignite a rebellion.

As Disney states: “The television movie garnered rave reviews at last month’s San Diego Comic-Con fan event for its story (set between the events of Star Wars Episodes III and IV) and its look – akin to the classic Star Wars trilogy. The series designs are influenced by the work of original Star Wars concept artist Ralph McQuarrie.”

Take a look at the first seven minutes of Star Wars Rebels below, and let us know if you’ll be tuning in!

There is an influx of new Star Wars VII information today! J.J. Abrams loves playing his usual mystery box secrets and giggling like a school girl while we itch to know more. We can wildly speculate every little inch of this film, but when we get something it feels like we can take off for the rest of the day. First, some new costumes.

While for legal reasons we cannot reproduce the images below, you can click on over to UPROXX to see them yourself. There’s also a few leaked images of what the new Stormtroopers look like, and they look kinda Kubrick. Han is dressed like an older, grizzled Malcolm Reynolds of sorts, which just that space cowboy trope full circle, don’t it? His other costume, made for colder temperatures, is a throwback to his duds from Empire Strikes Back. The Stormtroopers, meanwhile, evoke a sort of 2001: A Space Odyssey vibe. Their helmets remind me of the hotel ship from the film after the gigantic time jump. Interesting that one of the most influential pieces of sci-fi and pop culture is evoking the other most influential piece of sci-fi and pop culture ever. A lot of these visual references could just be total coincidence, after all how much can you really invent “space soldier” and “space cowboy”?

Now, the bad guys. Abrams posted the note below, thanking everyone for the cool $5 million donated for A Force For Change. Way to go, good people! Thing is, check out that hand holding the note. The cyborg one. Who the hell is that? Did they give a gritty edge to C-3PO?

jj-abrams-droid-hand__span

According to Latino Review, the hand may belong to the Inquisitors, villains previously of the extended universe. This might hurt for you to hear, but anything relating to the extended universe and I start getting bored, so I’ll let the good source explain to you the Inquisitors.

The Inquisitors are the villains of Star Wars: Episode VII and the name of the main villain in Star Wars: Rebels. They seem to be loosly based on the now-deleted Expanded Universe Inquistors (Click here for that background) mixed with the hardended Sith look of Rebels’ villain. The Inquisitors are defenders of the Sith Order and they’ve been around for a long time. Just how long is what turns Episode VII’s story on it’s head.

Cool, I guess.

Hey. What’s this?

GET OUT NOW IF YOU DON’T WANT THE BIG SPOILER.

Ok?

Onward.

When our hero(es) find Luke and the Inquisitors are revealed, Luke’s explanation on the history of this order is going to trigger a flashback to explain that the Inquisitors have been tied into the Sith all along.

Remember when we broke Billie Lourd’s casting (Lourd is the biological daughter of Carrie Fisher)? That’s not so she can play a Solo kid, it’s so she can play a much younger Princess Leia than we’ve ever seen before in this flashback…

But, a young Princess Leia is not all this flashback reveals…

The Inquisitors will be seen serving Darth Vader in flashback.

Yes, Darth Vader will be on screen, briefly, in Star Wars: Episode VIIWe’re not done with the dark prince of the Sith quite yet.

UH. COOL.

Star Wars: Episode VII will be released December 18, 2015.

I suppose that here at Geekscape not that many eyebrows would be raised if someone said they were thinking about dropping $110* on a Star Wars model. After all, she is a beauty isn’t she?

[*That’s UK prices, in the US you can pick it up for a mere $61]

TANTIVE IV
TANTIVE IV

While the Tantive IV would look great decorating your shelf, this is not just an ornament, it’s part of a board game, or if you are being pedantic, a miniatures battle game – the Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures Game. I think that Star Wars: X-Wing Miniatures is a great game for any gamer, but especially the geek gamer. While the Star Wars connection is one obvious reason (and they also make a very similar Star Trek version for those who swing more that way) I will try to give you a few more.

The Basics

Let’s start by explaining what the game is: it’s Star Wars dog fighting. Is that good enough? OK. It is a game of two sides, Alliance vs Empire of course, designed to be played by two players but that can easily accommodate more with a few extra ships and team play. Each of you controls one or more ships flying around in space trying to achieve your mission goals. These can be as simple as a TIE Fighter vs X-Wing fight to the death or a more sophisticated scenario involving escorting shuttles, scanning probes and so on.

The rules are pretty simple which makes it an easy game to pick up, and I think it’s worth me going through them briefly. At the start of each turn the players all secretly and simultaneously select how far their ships are going to move and in which direction by using little dials that belong to each ship. Each type of ship a different choices – TIE Interceptors for example are obviously quicker and more manoeuvrable than Y-Wings. Players then reveal the dials one at a time and move their ships, in order of pilot skill. After a ship moves it can take one of a small number of actions that vary depending on ship type. For example they can Target Lock in order to increase their chance of attacks hitting and have an opportunity to fire any missiles they might have, or they might Evade reducing the chances of being hit if fired upon.

DICE AND RANGE RULER

Once all the ships have moved, it’s shootin’ time. The most skilled pilots go first and pick a target. Simple range and line of sight is determined with a natty little ruler shaped like a laser blast – red on one side and green on the other. The attacking player rolls a number of special attack dice and sees how many hits they score. The defending player rolls the defence dice and tries to cancel out any hits. Players may spend those tokens I mentioned that you can take as actions. Each hit damages the ship, reducing shields first and then causing hull damage. Once your hull is depleted the ship explodes in space. Feel free to hum the sad Binary Sunset music mockingly at your opponent. After all ships that are able to fire the round is over and you start again setting your manoeuvre dials. And that is basically it. Simple yet elegant. I think this is a great game for both the first time casual player or the hardcore seasoned gamer, and here’s why.

Simple but meaningful choices

As I hope I have shown, the rules are easy and your choices fairly simple each turn. Do you fly at the enemy head on with all your forces, or do you divide your strength by splitting up to flank them , do you go for their strongest ship first to take it out early, or do you try and pick off the weaker ones quickly first? Do you pull a difficult manoeuvre to get into (or out of) a crucial spot but then take a Stress token limiting your options later? And after your move you will have another choice to make. This will probably be one of 3 or 4 possible actions for each ship, and these again can be crucial decisions. Maybe your ship has the option to do a Barrel Roll [best Peppy voice please], Evade or Focus. The benefits of each choice will dependent on what your opponent does and whether you plan to be opening fire or trying to duck and cover. The options are never complex but the choices can be agonising and the consequences weighty.

Variable ship characteristics

SHIP CARDS
SHIP CARDS

As illustrated above each ship has unique characteristics. The X-Wing is has 3 attack dice [red number] and only 2 defence [green number] meaning it has more firepower than the TIE [2 attack] but is not as evasive [3 defense]. However when the tie is hit it will explode in a ball of flames after taking only 3 damage [yellow], whereas the X-Wing has 2 shields [blue] to take out before it receives real damage. As mentioned before they also have different abilities, for example TIEs can do a barrel roll and X-Wings can target lock. As a result it really feels like you are flying very different ships and you therefore adjust your play style accordingly.

Squad Customisation

Not only is each ship different but they all cost a different number of points. This is further modified by the skill of the pilot, as more skilled pilots move last (usually an advantage) and shoot first (always an advantage). Better pilots are also more likely to have special abilities that can modify the game, changing die results, adding or removing tokens, adjusting combat rolls and so on. As an example of cost Luke in his X-Wing costs 28 points whereas a lowly Academy Pilot in their TIE is only 12. Finally you can further customise a ship by adding upgrade cards like missiles, pilot skills and R2 units. When picking your roster you set a number of squad points each; 50, 100, 200 or whatever, and build two squads. If you enjoy this kind of thing you can spend ages fine tuning a squad. If you don’t it’s pretty easy to do off the cuff, or you can find pre-made squad suggestions in the box or online. And while the box says 2 players, bigger squads mean you can play with more players. I have had many enjoyable 3-5 player team games, with each player controlling one or more ships.

Ship Collection

In the starter box you get one X-Wing and two TIE Fighters with a bunch of different pilot and upgrade cards. This alone is enough for plenty of game, with a few different scenarios adding variety if you want a rest from last-man-standing type play. But we are geeks and cannot stop there. The damn company keep releasing more ships and how can we resist? For about $10 each you can get A-wings, B-wings, Y-wings, TIE interceptors, TIE bombers and the TIE Advanced. Each ship plays a little differently and has different pilot and upgrade cards in the box, with the latter often usable on many of your other ships. And there are bigger (of course more expensive) ships like the Falcon, Slave I and an Imperial Shuttle. And recently even bigger ships with the Tantive IV and a Rebel Transport. Many of the new ships add minor or major new rules and mechanics to the game. There are now even extended canon ships like TIE defenders and Z-95s. I am up to 14 ships at the moment and having a bit of a rest. For now.

Conclusion

For $27 you get a simple and fairly elegant game with amazing models. You have a rules set that is easy enough that my 5 year old son can play the game and squad build with a little help, and yet create deep enough play to satisfy the tactical needs of many of the more hard core gamers in my group. You can keep it light and drop it on the table for a quick casual game or you can spend hours honing your squad to compete in national tournaments.

Bottom line is, at the end of the day it’s just fun. And did I mention it’s Star Wars?

Briefly: Disney XD has just debuted the first seven minutes of their anticipated new series, Star Wars Rebels. The extended preview  does exactly what it intends to, and gets us excited as hell for what’s to come.

The series, executive produced by Dave Filoni, Simon Kinberg, and Greg Weisman, is scheduled to premiere in fall 2014 as a one-hour special telecast on Disney Channel and will be followed by a series on Disney XD.

Here’s what Disney said about the preview:

In this special extended preview of Star Wars Rebels, the Empire arrives on Lothal — bringing tyranny with them. Imperials and stormtroopers establish an intimidating presence on the planet, enforcing strict new laws for trade and arresting citizens for expressing dissent of any kind. A young boy named Ezra, however, discovers that a mysterious group is attempting to steal cargo from the Empire. Intrigued, he tries to take it for himself – and ends up on the run from both Imperials and this small band of rebels.

Briefly: The already expansive cast of J.J. Abrams Star Wars: Episode VII has just added two more.

Following the addition of 12 Years A Slave star Lupita Nyong’o and Game of Thrones star Gwendoline Christie a few weeks back, Disney has announced that newcomers Crystal Clarke and Pip Andersen have joined the project in unspecified roles.

Here’s the announcement:

At the end of last year Lucasfilm and Disney invited all young aspiring actors to attend an open casting call for roles in J.J Abrams’ Star Wars: Episode VII. The casting calls spanned 11 cities across the US and UK and over 37,000 hopefuls attended, with a further 30,000 submitting applications online.

Having hunted high and low for young and undiscovered talent, the filmmakers are delighted to announce that two actors from the open call call have been cast.

Crystal Clarke is an American actress studying in Glasgow, UK, who has both stage and screen acting experience and is soon to be seen in her first feature,The Moon and the Sun (to be released in 2015). British actor Pip Andersen is a skilled practitioner of parkour, a discipline that involves propelling oneself through any given environment with incredible grace and agility. Pip recently demonstrated this remarkable skill in a Spider-Man ad for Sony.

“The Star Wars universe has always been about discovering and nurturing young talent and in casting Episode VII we wanted to remain absolutely faithful to this tradition. We are delighted that so many travelled to see us at the open casting calls and that we have been able to make Crystal and Pip a part of the film,” said producer and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy.

Meanwhile, principal photography continues at Pinewood Studios in London after wrapping on location in Abu Dhabi in May.

In August, the team will take a brief two-week hiatus while adjustments to the current production schedule are made as actor Harrison Ford recovers from a leg injury. Harrison is doing well and is looking forward to returning to the set soon. Shooting remains on track to wrap in the fall with the film scheduled for release on December 18, 2015.

Briefly: This is some very cool news.

Deadline has learned that Looper, Brick (if you haven’t seen this, definitely, definitely look into it), and Breaking Bad‘s Ozymandias director Rian Johnson has been tapped to write and direct both Star Wars: Episode VIII and Star Wars: Episode IX.

So now we have Abrams on Episode VIIGodzilla director Gareth Edwards on one of the standalone films, Chronicles Josh Trank on another, and Johnson on Episode VIII and IX. That’s some pretty stellar talent. Are you excited yet?

Johnson hasn’t officially commented on the news, but did tweet out the following hilarious and fitting video:

Briefly: Just like Mirror’s Edge, today’s Star Wars Battlefront preview was mostly filled with behind-the-scenes footage of lucky people visiting Lucasfilm archives and set locations in researching of the new game. They talk of just how emotional an experience this development is, and how DICE is working hard to make Star Wars Battlefront as great as it possibly could be.

It also features a few gorgeous pieces of in-engine footage, which you absolutely need to see. The end of the trailer says that we’ll see (see, not play) more in Spring 2015, insinuating that Star Wars Battlefront is a long way off.

Take a look at the new preview below, and let us know how excited you are to jump back into this world.

Briefly: Chronicle and the new The Fantastic Four director Josh Trank has just found his next film.

A few weeks back, LucasFilm announced that Godzilla director Gareth Edwards would helm one of the planned Star Wars spinoff films, and today Trank was tapped to direct another. Unlike Edwards’ film, we don’t know when this one is slated to hit theatres, and just like Edwards’ film, we have no idea who this one’s about.

Here’s the announcement, straight from StarWars.com:

In addition to the episodes of a new Star Wars trilogy, Lucasfilm and Disney continue development of multiple stand-alone movies that will offer new stories beyond the core Saga. The newest director to come on board is Josh Trank.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Josh into the family,” says Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. “He is such an incredible talent and has a great imagination and sense of innovation. That makes him perfectly suited to Star Wars, and for this new slate of movies that reach beyond the core characters and storylines of Episodes I through IX.”

Trank states, “The magic of the Star Wars Universe defined my entire childhood. The opportunity to expand on that experience for future generations is the most incredible dream of all time.”

Trank captured imaginations worldwide with his critically lauded directorial debutChronicle, a fresh and engaging take on the superhero genre. Trank is currently at work on The Fantastic Four for 20th Century Fox.

What do you think of Trank taking on one of these films? Which character do you hope he focusses on? Sound out below!

Briefly: Star Wars: Episode VII set photos have been leaking all over the place (we haven’t been posting them out of respect to the production). Disney and most everyone involved in the production are likely irate at this fact, and today director J.J. Abrams tweeted out a fantastic, tongue-in-cheek response to the culprit(s):

Fans will notice that the note is sitting on top of the Holochess board from the Millennium Falcon, which we saw being built in those photos a couple days back.

Star Wars: Episode VII stars John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Max von Sydow, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker, Lupita Nyong’o, and Gwendoline Christie, and will hit theatres on December 18th, 2015.

Indie Sci Fi director Neil Johnson has been a friend for a few years and an avid Geekscape listener for the same amount of time! One of the first directors to make a fully digital film, and science fiction film at that, Neil and I sat down to talk about the challenge of making low budget science fiction movies and indie filmmaking. Neil also justifies the Star Wars prequels better than anyone ever has before and talks about his upcoming film ‘Starship Rising’. Things get very personal on this episode as we talk about our approaches and inspirations. This is easily one of my favorite Geekscape’s yet!

Briefly: The already expansive cast of J.J. Abrams Star Wars: Episode VII has just added two more.

The cast was lacking in female stars, but Disney has announced that Academy Award winner and 12 Years A Slave star Lupita Nyong’o and Game of Thrones star Gwendoline Christie have joined the project in unspecified roles.

“I could not be more excited about Lupita and Gwendoline joining the cast of Episode VII,” says Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. “It’s thrilling to see this extraordinarily talented ensemble taking shape.”

Star Wars: Episode VII will hit theatres on December 18th, 2015. What do you think of the latest additions?
