Briefly: Chronicle and the new The Fantastic Four director Josh Trank has just found his next film.

A few weeks back, LucasFilm announced that Godzilla director Gareth Edwards would helm one of the planned Star Wars spinoff films, and today Trank was tapped to direct another. Unlike Edwards’ film, we don’t know when this one is slated to hit theatres, and just like Edwards’ film, we have no idea who this one’s about.

Here’s the announcement, straight from StarWars.com:

In addition to the episodes of a new Star Wars trilogy, Lucasfilm and Disney continue development of multiple stand-alone movies that will offer new stories beyond the core Saga. The newest director to come on board is Josh Trank.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Josh into the family,” says Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. “He is such an incredible talent and has a great imagination and sense of innovation. That makes him perfectly suited to Star Wars, and for this new slate of movies that reach beyond the core characters and storylines of Episodes I through IX.”

Trank states, “The magic of the Star Wars Universe defined my entire childhood. The opportunity to expand on that experience for future generations is the most incredible dream of all time.”

Trank captured imaginations worldwide with his critically lauded directorial debutChronicle, a fresh and engaging take on the superhero genre. Trank is currently at work on The Fantastic Four for 20th Century Fox.

What do you think of Trank taking on one of these films? Which character do you hope he focusses on? Sound out below!

Briefly: The upcoming Fantastic Four reboot’s controversial cast was revealed back in February, announcing our new heroes, but leaving out our new villain (both in character and actor).

According to Variety, The East and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes star Toby Kebbell is in negotiations to play Doctor Doom in the upcoming film. I’m sure that most of us had guessed that Doctor Doom would be the film’s antagonist, and… it looks like we were right and that Fox isn’t taking any more chances with the film.

We’ll be sure to let you know when it’s official, and to fill you in on any more Fantastic Four news as it surfaces.

Are you looking forward to the film? Why or why not? Sound out below!

Opportunity is something you have to embrace in life, just ask the young up-and-coming writer/director Ryan Coogler. The 27 year old bay area born filmmaker found a story he was passionate about and helped turn Fruitvale Station into the 2013 Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize Winner for a Dramatic. Having grown up around the same time and on the same streets as his movie’s protagonist, the saddening tale surrounding Oscar Grant felt like the right story for Coogler to tell. He used a huge backing by producer and Academy Award Winner Forest Whitaker in order to assemble an unfathomable collection of actors and actresses including The Wire‘s Michael B. Jordan and The Help‘s Best Supporting Actress Winner, Octavia Spencer. And as they say, “the rest is history”.

Fruitvale Station follows a troubled young man named Oscar Grant (played by Jordan) as he spends his New Year’s Eve determined to correct his path. Desperate to provide stability for his 4 year old daughter and his girlfriend Sophina, Oscar makes a heartfelt resolution to walk the straight and narrow. But as the day winds down and Oscar travels to San Francisco with Sophina and other friends to watch the fireworks, his past ultimately catches up with him on this fateful evening at the Fruitvale Station terminal.

While writer and director Ryan Coogler’s Fruitvale Station is a glowing example of dramatic filmmaking, he leaves himself completely vulnerable by addressing such a widely controversial story. However, disregarding the often-debated facts surrounding the tragic events of New Year’s Eve at the terminal, Coogler opens our eyes to a different, more personal, story. With the aid of an unquestionable standout performance from Michael B. Jordan, Coogler brings his own version of Oscar Grant’s story to life. Showing us a previously incarcerated young man who falls victim to the streets, where it’s always easier to say yes to things like selling drugs than it is to walk away from the game. But not on this day, not for Oscar. Although the loving father knows how difficult of a struggle it can be to change, it has to start somewhere. Michael B. Jordan’s convincing turn helps create a gentle and warm main character, one that is clearly flawed but easy to connect with. Therefore, Fruitvale Station becomes a well-made and effective dramatic effort.

Fruitvale-Station2

Despite the film’s knack for dramatic flair, it becomes impossible to ignore the contextual discrepancies and highly controversial facts surrounding the real-life story of Oscar Grant. While Coogler hopes to appear somewhat neutral regarding the facts of the evening and clearly portrays Oscar as an imperfect man, by approaching the film through the clean-slate perspective in which he does, Fruitvale Station can’t help but become an agenda-driven piece. I don’t wish to harp on that notion or even debate the black & white labeling that comes hand in hand with a controversial topic such as this. Instead, let me also point out that Fruitvale Station is a drawn-out and slow burning film. Although the director admittedly uses this tactic in juxtaposition to the fast-paced third act that flies by without a chance to really process the moment, the slow progressing opening and mid-section of the movie make for an overall dragging experience.

The major motion picture debut from Ryan Coogler, Fruitvale Station, is an undoubtedly flawed film that pushes through its faults and wins the audience over with a talented cast, a heartwarming story and superb direction. It’s clearly an imposing piece that’s meant to make you feel a certain way, but at the end of the day, Coogler was able to pull me into the story. If you enjoy a well-made character-driven film, then you should take a chance on this year’s Sundance Film Festival Winner, Fruitvale Station.

Director Josh Trank may be looking re-unite with Chronicle star Michael B. Jordan for his upcoming Fantastic Four reboot. Website The Wrap reports that the actor may be in talks to play the role of Johnny Storm aka The Human Torch in the film. While 20th Century Fox has declined to comment on this news, “numerous individuals” close to the production have reportedly told the site that the actor has had multiple meetings with the studio and has a good relationship with the director from their work on Chronicle.

Of course there’s going to be an issue with fans regarding the actors skin color, but wouldn’t you rather have talent in a role rather than worry about the character being “white in the comics”? This isn’t official casting news and is most likely just an option that Fox are considering at the moment but Jordan is actually an excellent actor that could bring an fresh and interesting new spin on the character. Production is set to begin on the film in a few months, so we should expect some official casting news to get revealed very soon.

Casting is currently underway for the highly anticipated sequel to The Amazing Spider-Man. Recently it was revealed that actors were being screen tested for the role of Harry Osborn and director Marc Webb has just revealed via Twitter who they have chosen for the role:

The official press release from Sony (which also confirms that Jamie Foxx will indeed be playing Electro):

Dane DeHaan will join the cast of the next installment of The Amazing Spider-Man™ along side Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx and Shailene Woodley as Columbia Pictures prepares to begin production on the next chapter of the blockbuster franchise, it was announced today by Doug Belgrad, president of Columbia Pictures, and Hannah Minghella, president of production for the studio.

The screenplay is by Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci and Jeff Pinkner based on a previous draft by James Vanderbilt. The film will be directed by Marc Webb and produced by Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach.

The casting of DeHaan as Harry Osborn was confirmed this morning in a tweet by Webb (@MarcW) who wrote “Meet Harry Osborn. So excited to have him on board. @danedehaan.”

“Dane is an exciting and extraordinary young actor and he is a fantastic addition to our cast,” Webb said.

The new film in the Spider-Man saga is set for release in 3D on May 2, 2014. Production will begin in early 2013 in New York.

Webb, Garfield and Stone previously teamed on this summer’s blockbuster The Amazing Spider-Man, which has taken in more than $751 million worldwide.

DeHaan caught moviegoers’ attention with his performances in four 2012 releases: Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln, opposite Daniel Day-Lewis and Lukas Haas; John Hillcoat’s Lawless, alongside Shia LaBeouf, Tom Hardy, and Jason Clarke; Bradley Rust Gray’s Jack & Diane, with Juno Temple and Riley Keough; and one of the year’s biggest sleeper hits, the adventure thriller Chronicle, directed by Josh Trank. He began his film career with director John Sayles and actor Chris Cooper in Amigo.

DeHaan next stars in Place Beyond the Pines alongside Bradley Cooper and Ryan Gosling. In addition he will star in Atom Egoyan’s Devil’s Knot, with Reese Witherspoon and Colin Firth, about the fate of the West Memphis Three; and John Krokidas’ Kill Your Darlings, with Jack Huston, Daniel Radcliffe, Ben Foster, and Kyra Sedgwick, set in 1944 amidst the Beat Generation.

Mr. DeHaan first came to industry attention with his portrayal of Jesse in the third season of the critically applauded drama series In Treatment, starring alongside Gabriel Byrne. This was followed by a guest arc in the fourth season of the popular horror series True Blood.

In 2010, he received an Obie Award for his performance in Annie Baker’s The Aliens, directed by Sam Gold. The Rattlestick Theater production was cited as “Play of the Year” by The New York Times. Mr. DeHaan made his Broadway debut in with American Buffalo, Robert Falls’ 2008 staging of the classic David Mamet play.

So, does this mean we will soon learn more about who will be playing Norman Osborn? Keep checking back because we will be sure to keep you updated.

One of Mark Millar’s project that he will oversee for Fox will be the upcoming reboot of Fantastic Four. Josh Trank has been attached to direct the upcoming film, and Millar has stated thats Trank’s Chronicle was his favorite superhero film last year, and is excited to see what the director will bring to the table.

“You can tell from Chronicle that it was a new way of looking at superheroes, and I think he’s going to apply that same slightly skewed way of looking at heroes to the Fantastic Four, but do it in a way that feels incredibly reverential to the Kirby and Lee stuff.”

Millar went on state that for the Fantastic Four to work properly it really has to be done with the Lee and Kirby prospective. While the current trend for comic movies is to give them a darker feel, don’t expect that one from Marvel’s fantastic family.

“I don’t think you could do Fantastic Four and try and make it grim and gritty.”

It appears that Millar and Trank are going after a different approach than the current trend of movies. I’m pretty excited to see what the two combined can come up with. And I know for one thing that I hope this means we will get the Mole Man, The Moloids and his creatures on the big screen.

This past Saturday during his panel at Comikaze, Max Landis (Chronicle) revealed that he had sold a television show but could not yet reveal the details. Well, the details have been revealed and Fox has picked up Vigilant a superhero police drama that will be penned by Landis and produced by Howard Gordon (Homeland).

The series that revolves around a twenty-year-old woman who takes on the persona of a crime fighting vigilante in order to take down criminals and flush out corruption from within the police department.

Landis tweeted earlier:

It looks like Landis has even more on his plate now than he already did with him currently working on the sequel to Chronicle, the upcoming Frankenstein project as well as penning Space Mountain for Disney. You can check out some details on those projects here. We’ll be sure to keep you updated as more news hits for Vigilant.

Today at Comikaze Max Landis hosted a panel where he revealed a few details about his upcoming Frankenstein project, a yet unannounced Disney movie and the upcoming sequel to Chronicle. Or should we say sequels?

“Did you guys like Chronicle? Well, Chronicle 2 is going to be even better.”

Landis also, even though doing it on accident, confirmed there are not only plans for a sequel but a third movie. He also revealed that they would be sticking to the found footage for the next movies. Landis stated that he “didn’t really show us anything” meaning that there may be more to the first movie than we originally saw because we only saw what Andrew showed us.

In the sequel we won’t be seeing any new characters with powers and we should possibly expect to have some different opinions on characters from the first film. Andrew’s dad may return but re-writes may see that change.

Landis also spoke about his upcoming Frankenstein project and assures that his Frankenstein is the best work he’s ever written and that it’s “not a monster movie”. He went on to talk about how Igor isn’t actually in the books or movies and how he’s going to include him in the movie because people are already expecting it.

“Instead of making the accurate version. What if I write a version that everyone already thinks exists. And I do the best cool version of it.”

“Igor is the main character. Hey guys, Igor may be Daniel Radcliff.”

Landis also revealed that his untitled project for Disney that he’s working on is Space Mountain. Yup, you read that right. Like the ride. It’s something that Disney has never done before…oh, wait. Let’s just not use Johnny Depp in this one too okay guys?

Fox has decided to remove Shawn Levy (Real Steel) from the equation of their upcoming Frankenstein. Rather than spend the $80 million budget that Levy wanted Fox has chosen to a pursue a more econmic route and has attached director Paul McGuinan (Lucky Number Slevin, Push) to direct.

“Levy wanted a big-budget version of the classic monster tale, according to sources close to the project, while Fox wants to keep costs on the project down.”

The film is being penned by Max Landis (Chronicle) who may be doing re-writes due to a new director being attached. In which case, I am hoping won’t take too long due to Landis currently working on the sequel to last year’s Chronicle at the momentThe actual content of the reboot is being kept under wraps but it’s being said that the story will be about “friendship and redemption.” Well, that’s definitely not what I was expecting it to be about. There has no announcement as far as when shooting will begin yet. This could definitely be an interesting project to keep an eye on with Landis and McGuinan behind it.

After Chronicle became a huge success, Sony Pictures has taken notice in the talents of director Josh Trank and signed him on to try to do the impossible, make a video game movie that doesn’t suck.

That is going to be a hard task since Shadow of the Colossus is a cult favorite among gamers and they will be sure to point out any little mistake Trank makes. Even being a fan of the game himself, Josh Trank has a daunting project on his hands.

At least he will get a new writer since the one that was hired back in 2009 didn’t do so well with Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, the failed Voltron movie, and Masters of the Universe.

For years, Twentieth Century Fox has been the studio fanboys love to hate; from slowly killing the Alien franchise with bad sequel after bad sequel, to their treatment of their Marvel properties, let’s just say that Fox chairman Tom Rothman has a bad reputation with the geek crowd. But last summer that started to change, when both X-Men First Class and Rise of the Planet of the Apes actually ended up being….really good. And now Prometheus looks to be a legitimate sci fi movie and not just another cheap cash in like AVP. Has Rothman seen the light? In any event, people are excited about Fox genre fare for the first time in a long time. At this year’s Cinemacon in Las Vegas, several websites got the chance to quiz Rothman on several genre movies, and here are some of the tidbits that they got:

According to MTV News, who spoke to Rothman, the sequel to X-Men: First Class will begin shooting early next year; “We’re going to start shooting January 2013 for a release date of either Christmas 2013, or Summer 2014, The script is in development now. Matt, Simon Kinberg and Jane Goldman are working on it now.” In other mutant news, The Wolverine is still set in Japan and based on the famous Chris Claremont/Frank Miller mini series from the 80’s. Studio work is going to be done in Australia, but location shooting is going to be in Japan. Rothman admits to the mistakes on the last Wolverine movie, and indicates that they’re “listening to the fans” this time.  “I can just tell you on behalf of (Hugh Jackman) his goal is to make the ultimate, bad ass, berserker rage Wolverine” Also, it looks like the rumors of Chronicle director Josh Trank taking on the Fantastic Four reboot are true, as he has been brought in to develop the new FF movie: And speaking of Chronicle, that might be getting a sequel too, although Rothman said they “won’t just make a sequel to make one; the story needs to be there, one that maintains the honesty and integrity of the original.”

In terms of the sequel to Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Rothman said (in speaking with Collider) “That’s very much on the tracks.  We’re developing a script.  Rupert Wyatt, who directed the first one, will direct the second one.  We’re pushing forward aggressively, so the script’s being written now… but the goal for us would be summer of 2014, if that’s possible.

And finally, for those excited about the fifth Die Hard movie, A Good Day to Die Hard, here’s what Rothman  had to say about this one: “John McClane, the ultimate American hero, goes to Russia.  So talk about a fish out of water, he’s completely out of water….It’s really a father-son story, which is that John McClane’s been a great cop his whole life but he’s been a pretty lousy father.  He has a grown son who he’s not really been in much touch with, and McClane thinks the son’s a fuck up—that’s a technical term. So he goes to Russia, he thinks, to bail his son out of jail, and it turns out the son’s not a fuck up, he’s the antithesis of that.  In fact, the apple has not fallen far from the tree, the apple has not fallen from the tree, which is that the son is a badder ass John McClane than John McClane.” Sounds to me like they are setting up Willis free Die Hard 6 with Jr. McClane.
