Persona 4 Arena was one of those games that we never knew we wanted, but were happy it exists. After reviewing it last year, I learned that this odd pairing between the RPG developer Atlus and the fighting game aficionados at Arc System Works, (responsible for the Guilty Gear and BlazBlue franchises,) resulted in one of the most enjoyable 2D fighters in years, so much so that I consider it my favorite console game of 2012. Its fast paced action, unique fighting mechanics involving both the characters and their unique Persona’s and deep story that served as a sequel to both the third and fourth RPG titles, and there was little to complain about once our arcade sticks were in hand.

So its no surprise that P4:A would get a follow up. As a matter of fact, I was expecting them to go the popular route and nickel and dime us with expensive DLC characters before coming out with some kind of director’s cut. Imagine my surprise when Atlus officially announced Persona 4: The Ultimax Ultra Suplex Hold. Yes, that’s the real name. Yes it’s absurd. Yes, the game looks awesome!

Persona 4 Ultamax Yukari

Joining the existing roster of characters spanning the casts of Persona 3 and 4 are fan favorites from 3. Yukari arrives sporting some Pink Ranger-esque outfit and comes equipped with her trademark bow and uses her Persona’s wind abilities to redirect her projectiles at her enemies. Junpei has dedicated his time to baseball since giving up fighting shadows, which is reflected by his strength growing for every “run” scored when he hits his opponents with his bat. Joining them is newcomer Sho Minazuki. Nothing is known about this fighter, but it’s safe to say he’ll play a decent role as the story unfolds.

Aside from the new characters, every existing fighter will come with rebalanced skills and new attacks, in addition to new Shadow Forms. Each character aside from Elizabeth and Shadow Labrys, (you know, since she’s already a shadow,) has a shadow version, which will give up certain abilities like Bursts and One More Cancels for a quick charging SP meter that can become unlimited for a short amount of time. How players will approach each of these scenarios adds an extra layer of depth to an already deep fighting game, and to say this news is exciting enough. Seeing as the backgrounds, themes and stages in the trailer look much darker, even implying that shadows are roaming in the real world, gives it a Persona 3 vibe. Does this mean the Dark Hour is returning?

Persona 4 Ultamax Junpei

We’ll have to wait until the end of this year to find out. P4:U is scheduled to arrive in Japanese arcades this Winter with a console release surely around the corner. Check out the trailer and enjoy the awesomeness of the absurdity. Is this enough to hold us over until Persona 5 is finally released? Let us know in the comments!

We’re in the home stretch folks! We’re only one week away from Pokemon X and Y‘s release, and as the days draw closer, we’ll take a look at a set of monsters that we can look forward to training. First up is one of the stranger characters, following in the footsteps of Vanilluxe and Garbodor, we bring to you the next set of living inanimate objects… If that makes sense.

Slurpuff Artwork

Swirlix is the cotton candy Pokemon and is one of the new fairy type Pokemon. Exclusive to Pokemon X version, the Pokemon website states that, “Swirlix loves sweets and eats nothing else, making its body as sweet and sticky as cotton candy.” It’s ability, Sweet Veil, keeps its teammates from falling asleep.

Swirlix Artwork

So what’s the natural progression from a ball of cotton candy? Obviously, a cupcake, (hey, it makes as much sense as an electric mouse.) The official site states, “Slurpuff has an unbelievable sense of smell—a hundred million times more sensitive than that of humans. With its highly attuned senses, it can distinguish the faintest of odors.” What improvements it has aside from the obvious stat boosts compared to Swirlix is unknown, but there’s little reason to think it won’t share the same typing and ability.

What do you think of Pokemon based off of cotton candy that morphs into a cupcake? Check out the screenshots below and make sure to check back tomorrow for the next Pokemon of the day.

Briefly: I love survival horror. At least, I love what survival horror used to be. Sure, we had the absolutely incredible The Last of Us earlier this year (though that was much more survival than horror), and there’s some excellent looking PC titles on the market right now (Outlast anyone?). Sadly, the once mighty greats of the genre have fallen, and current Resident Evil and Silent Hill titles are nothing but average action games.

With The Evil Within, Bethesda Softworks and Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami are hoping to reinvigorate the classic survival horror genre, and I couldn’t be more excited. A new, extended gameplay video for the title has just been released, and it looks absolutely unreal.

Take a look at the footage below, and let us know what you think! The Evil Within is still a ways away, and simply has a release date of 2014 at this point, but the game will launch on PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, and PS4.

Detective Sebastien Castellanos and his partners are called in to investigate a gruesome mass murder. After witnessing a mysterious force slaughter his fellow officers, Sebastian is ambushed and knocked unconscious. When the video opens, he finds his world has been turned upside down. Facing unimaginable terror and fighting for survival in a world where hideous creatures wander among the dead, Sebastian embarks on a frightening journey to unravel who or what is behind this unimaginable evil.

Today is the final day in the series of announcements from Valve and this one is a doozy. They are officially announcing their own gamepad! Looks like my prediction from Wednesday was right! Get eyes on this baby!

Steam Controller
Dual trackpads, touch screen and customizable layout!

The Steam Controller really looks like it is the proper next step in video game input. No waggle controls, heart beat sensors or facial recognition. Valve has taken the greatest gaming controller, the Mouse and Keyboard and condensed them into a controller. The Steam Controller will work with all games on the Steam library, even the old ones!

The first thing you will notice about this gamepad is the dual trackpads. Each trackpad is super high resolution like that of a mouse, is clickable and opens up categories of games that were once unable to be played with a traditional gamepad. From the Press Release:

Whole genres of games that were previously only playable with a keyboard and mouse are now accessible from the sofa. RTS games. Casual, cursor-driven games. Strategy games. 4x space exploration games. A huge variety of indie games. Simulation titles. And of course, Euro Truck Simulator 2.

The Steam Controller will also feature brand new Haptic feedback. Featuring “dual linear resonant actuators”, they are saying that they will be able to deliver the kind of resistance that is missing from modern controllers and even might be able to improve on the Mouse and Keyboard!

Next we have the Touchscreen. High resolution, back lit touch screen is also one giant button that is clickable. It can be used to bring up menus, rotary options (Think weapon wheels) and even run entire in-game functions. One great feature of the touchscreen is the game integration. You won’t be forced to separate your attention between two screens. When you tap the touch screen it will overlay what it is displaying on the main screen!

Steam Controller Portal 2 Bindings
The Steam Controller will also appear as a standard Mouse and Keyboard so that you will be able to use it on OLDER games.

The best part? Is that this controller is totally open! Valve plans on releasing tools for consumers to edit the controller to their personal taste!

Personal thoughts? I didn’t really think I was going to be THIS excited for a controller, I was hoping for some #3 games (Hal-Life, Portal L4D). After reading over the entire release I honestly think Valve is making the proper next step in input. Being able to properly replicate the preciseness of a Mouse has been a goal of controller designers for YEARS. The best manufacturers were able to come up with were adapters that you plugged your mouse and keyboard in and up to your console, and even those were pretty sketchy. It’s hard to say how WELL they’ve done with this controller until we can get one in our hands, one which will be included in the hardware beta, but just from looking on their proof of concept I’d be surprised if this came out badly.

Feeling lost? Check out our Day 1 and Day 2 coverage of the year of Valve announcements!

Steam Announcements Unicorn

I sure wish that I could enter this contest. Sadly, I don’t think that writers are allowed to partake!

Back at GamesCom, Plantronics announced a pretty incredible new Headset / Mixer system called RIG. Sure, there are plenty of gaming headsets out there these days, but what makes RIG different is its ability to have it connected to multiple devices at the same time. This allows you to add your own music into any game, take a phone call without compromising your current match, and even tune and customize the level of each source to your liking! It’s compatible with your consoles, as well as Mac or PC, and can even be used as standalone headphones for your smartphone!

Amazing, right? Well, watch the video below to find out more!

http://youtu.be/JxnvLIArql0

Want a RIG of your very own? Well, we’re giving one away! This coming Wednesday, we’ll pick ONE winner who meets all the following criteria:

– Like Geekscape on Facebook
– Share this photo on your Facebook wall
– Reside in the United States (sorry Canadians… I feel you)

That’s it ! Simple, huh? Take another look at the RIG below, and let us know what you’ll be using it for!

http://youtu.be/I97Ky1w2oZA

Whoever wins, you’re pretty damn lucky: the RIG won’t launch to the general public until later this Fall, so you’ll be getting your hands on a headset that nobody else has yet!

Sometimes it takes the right voice, the right pacing and the right mood to convey a message. Sometimes it just takes Sean Bean.

The surge of simulations games doesn’t seem to be slowing down, and the newest iteration of the crazy popular Train Simulator series is out now! The team over at RailSimulator have just put out this launch trailer and I say it is epic. Bonus points for the inclusion of the Alaska Railway!

http://youtu.be/C12aycIepqA

They seem to really be wanting to put some emotion into this game. They must have taken a cue from Forza 4.

You can get your hands on Train Simulator 2014 RIGHT NOW on Steam.

This is the week of Steam! With the announcement of Valves dedicated OS on Monday, gamers and journalists alike started speculating right away what the next two would be. Well speculate no further! Valve has officially announced dedicated hardware, lets take a look at Steam Machines!

Valve is finally getting into the home “console” market. They are going to be partnering with hardware manufacturers (who those are have yet to be released) to create dedicated Steam Machines that will run Steam OS. There will be multiple devices available come 2014, but they have created a Beta device as a proof of concept. No pictures of the Beta, but they have listed instructions so that you could be one out of 300 people lucky enough to test the hardware. Instructions are as followed:

THE HARDWARE BETA ELIGIBILITY QUEST:
Before October 25, log in to Steam and then visit your quest page to track your current status towards beta test eligibility
3. Make 10 Steam friends (if you haven’t already)
4. Create a public Steam Community profile (if you haven’t already)
5. Play a game using a gamepad in Big Picture mode

No pictures of the Steam Machine has been released yet, but Valve is saying that it will be open and upgradeable (want to tear it apart and put a different OS on it? Sure go ahead!), and that there will be several options to choose from. They also state that this will NOT interfere with their PC market and you will not be forced to purchase additional hardware to continue using Steam.

This is a HUGE step in the direction for Valve. They’ve been a huge thorn in the side of home consoles for almost a decade now, and with Gabe Newells public disdain for companies like Microsoft, it’s obvious he wants to create a truly open platform.

Thoughts? Well, I am of course excited being a Steam/Valve fanboy, but at the same time I have to step back and look at this objectively. The concept of open gaming, much like Communism, sounds great on paper but in practice is hasn’t done so well. The Ouya is a perfect example of the “Open Gaming” platform and that hasn’t done to well. I believe Valve has the foresight to not fall into the same hole that Ouya did. A Steam Machine will of course lock you into Valves ecosystem, so those giant AAA titles like Battlefield and Need For Speed will still require you to saunter into the computer room and fire up Origin.

As more information is released we will be sure to keep you updated. Be sure to come back FRIDAY for the final bit of news from the company. What do you think it will be? Lets hope Half-Life 3, but with our luck it will be Ricochet 2.

Steam Hardware Announcement

UPDATE:

After some exploration I found THIS patent from valve. It depicts a controller/gamepad with user swappable components.  It looks a LOT like the third picture, don’t you agree?

Valve Controller Patent

Still we can only speculate as to what will be presented Friday, but this looks like a pretty serious contender.

With next gen home consoles being released just around the corner, a lot of gamers have been wondering what’s next for PC gaming? Well look no further, for the collective geniuses at Valve have done it again. Check out Steam OS!

Steam OS is a 100% free Linux based operating system that is designed around the Steam digital distribution system. It’s goal is to bring the Steam PC gaming experience into the living room on your big screen TV. Valve says that they have achieved a new level of graphical processing performance, and they are well on their way to better audio and input performance as well. They state game developers and hardware manufacturers are making new products with Steam OS in mind.

Steam OS Livingroom
Bring a Steam Machine into your living room!

Four new features (well three new ones and one old one) that Valve is bringing to the table are: In-home game streaming, Streaming media services (Think Netflix, Hulu, ETC.), Family Sharing and Parental Controls. These are all bullet points you can find on any home console right now, having them on the Steam OS is a huge step in the right direction.

I expect to see hardware partnerships in the near future, specialized console sized PC’s from hardware manufacturers like Asus, Lenovo, HP and Dell. I’ve always said that the moment Gaming on a Linux based machine was on the level as a Windows machine (No need to run virtualization, emulation or shoddy drivers) I would make the switch. My big concern with the Steam OS is the In-home streaming. This makes me believe that not all games will work on the Steam OS and you will still need a second PC, and if at the end of the day that is the case I don’t see the need to switch right away.

There are still TWO more announcements coming this week, so be sure to check back Wednesday and Friday to see what Valve has planned next!

Steam OS Announcement
Speculation is the second announcement is specialized hardware and the third is a new series of games.

Blizzard Entertainment released patch 5.4 for World of Warcraft last Tuesday (with the requisite 127* hot fixes afterward), which implemented a large number of changes across various platforms: class, world, dungeons and raids, gear and mounts.

Blizzard took a hard look at some of the classes—hunters and paladins got the most changes but no class was left untouched—continuing the trend they started with the Mists of Panderia expansion, changing spells and abilities from talents into class skills. Does the new system make playing one’s class easier? Definitely. Gone are the hours of research and game theory over points spent on talent trees. The abilities that define a class and a spec are no longer left to the player to decide; rather Blizzard has defined them for us, and served them to each class as a fait accompli.

This is not a bad thing, but it is symbolic of the dumbing down of the game that has occurred since its Wrath of the Lich King expansion. While it was never considered the hardest of hard core MMOs—Everquest and Final Fantasy XI share that title—WoW at one point required skill and knowledge in order for a person to reach end game raiding. Blizzard’s attempts to appease both its audiences—the casual player and the hardcore raider—has mostly succeeded. But gone are the days of rep for resist gear, arguments over swords vs. daggers, raid progression being counted in months rather than days, Holy-Disc priests and Shock-adins. And occasionally, when we see a talent that used to be a choice become a required spell in our rotation, we miss those days.

Another Island Flying Mounts Don’t Work On

Patch 5.4 does not buck this trend. More talents became known skills. Things that once had to be glyphed have become passive abilities. Epic gear is literally on the ground for people to trip over (these 496 ilevel epics are now known as welfare epics. Cruel, yes. True? Yes) allowing anyone with mobility to acquire gear and raid (at least in Looking For Raid). The new isle—which players are sent to by Chromie (welcome back, Chromie!) is out of time (a clever trick to allow for Blizzard to take away flying mounts, because why would a player want to use something they’ve spent hours working for?) and heroes are needed.

As Heroes we are, off we go to the Timeless Isle, to be greeted with a ‘go explore the island’ quest. Seriously. They didn’t even try to get you to deliver a letter or a desperately needed potion or anything.  We’re also encouraged to open any chests we see lying about, and oh, here’s a new rep grind and new coins to collect.

At this point we liked to say a few words about rep grinds. We have, contrary to popular opinion, a real life. And in that real life we have daily tasks like dishes, and cooking dinner, and doing the laundry, and picking up the living room. Rep grind dailies are the WoW equivalent of having to do the dishes. They were never fun, but Panderia took them to the level of a full time job. A day’s daily quest on one toon could take four hours. And, if you want the Legendary items available through the Black Prince quest lines, then add in the required LFR, Normal or Heroic raids for another six to eight hours weekly.

At Least the Scenery’s Different

While 5.4 addresses this somewhat (gear is now found in boxes rather than having to slog through seven different reps) there is still a lot of ‘just run and kill things’

‘how many things?

‘ALL the things.’

Which is essentially what the Timeless Isle is. It’s Maine the day after deer hunting licenses come out. People travel in packs and kill every elite in sight. Rares die in seconds. The island’s timeless because what you’re doing never changes. Ride around in a circle, and kill things. By the time you’ve completed the circuit, there are more things.

Is this drastically different than before? No. Any MMO—or RPG for that matter—is going to have a requisite number of ‘go kill ten wolves and come back to me.’ It’s how you gain experience and level up. But the Timeless Isle is for level capped raiders. Why do we need to massacre turtles for two hours every day?

Is it new content? Yes. It’s even fun, for a little bit. Opening chests and finding purple has a certain awesome cachet about it (especially for those of us who remember how hard purple gear used to be to get) and it does allow for people to sidestep the never-ending rep grind (unless they want mounts…) and still be geared enough to LFR. But with all the things Blizzard could have done, the Timeless Isle feels a little…easy.

The fact that there is content only accessible to be players who completed certain quests already (the Black Prince quest line and the cooking profession quests) is a nice nod to players who achieved certain things in the prior patch and something we wish Blizzard would do more of, other than the random achievement.

Prepping before one of the new bosses in Siege of Ogrimmar.
Prepping before one of the new bosses in Siege of Orgrimmar.

Time to Take the Fight To Hellscream

The new Siege of Orgrimmar (SoO) raid content offers fresh bosses but the mechanics don’t start getting innovative and different until the last wing (the eleventh to the fourteenth boss). So far, the really exciting thing in 5.4 is Flex Raiding. Harder than LFR, easier than Normal, with no ilevel or role restrictions–and cross-server friendly–Flex raiding is an alternative for players and guilds who wish to experience new content without the PuG mentality of LFR but who maybe aren’t 100% ready for Normal or Heroic difficulty. It also allows guilds to gear more than 10 people in order to create a stable roster of geared players. While the first two wings of Flex have been criticized as being too easy, the theory behind it is sound and we look forward to seeing how it is implemented in later raids.

Proving Grounds are another new thing introduced in Patch 5.4. These solo instances allow a player to pick their role (dps, tank or healer) and then sets them against NPCs to ‘prove’ their skills. Gear is normalized to a 463 ilevel (higher level items with procs will still proc, but the rate is adjusted, though legendary proc remains the same) and the encounters are a test of skill and class knowledge. The grounds come have Bronze, Silver, Gold and Endless rounds and the achievements are already becoming requirements for high-end guilds.

The round’s difficulty scale is a little off, Bronze and Silver are deceptively easy compared to Gold. Potions don’t work and a player is never out of combat (except in Endless, where there is time out of combat every ten waves for drinking/eating) so cooldowns and mana/energy/rage/focus management are key. Players do get the full 8/8 buffs and can flask and food buff up if they want. There is a reforger there, as well as vendor with Dust of Disappearance, as talents, glyphs and stats set up for optimum raiding dps/healing/tanking are not always the best set-up for the proving grounds.

A Solid Update to the Game

Patch 5.4 is a solid new expansion; Players who liked World of Warcraft before will continue to play (with minor complaints); people who have never played will probably not be compelled too, and those who have left the game will not feel pangs of regret. As always, some classes are a little over-powered, and others have been nerfed a little too much, but Blizzard has always had a see-saw approach to class balance.

Patch 5.4 went live on Tuesday, September 10th, with the new raid content in LFR available on Tuesday, Sept. 17th.

World of Warcraft and its expansions are available from Blizzard.

*not an accurate number in regards to hot fixes. There may have been more.

A new teaser for the game has just been released, and as expected, it looks creepy as hell.

Take a look at the short video below, and let us know what you think so far! The Evil Within is still a ways away, and simply has a release date of 2014 at this point, but the game will launch on PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, and PS4.

The next in the series of incredibly realistic military simulation games, Arma III has launched and we get this inspirational new trailer. Get eyes on it below.

I’d like to warn anyone who plans on getting into this game. It is SEVERELY realistic and a hyper simulator. There are even special motion tracking headphones you can get that will map your head to the players in game head.

You can pick it up on Steam or at your local retailer. For more info on the game check out their official website HERE.

Looks like good ideas stay in Washington. Taking a move out of Microsoft’s play book, it looks like the guys at Valve are incorporating a new feature from the Xbox One. Lets take a look at the new Steam Family Sharing.

Steam is the biggest and most widely used Digital Distribution platform there is. One of the biggest gripes users had was, if a game was bought on one account (say on a family computer) you couldn’t play or access saves from the other game. OR if you logged in you were forced to play on the other account. Now with Steam Family Sharing you don’t have to fuss with that.

Steam Family Share Request Access
What the request process will look like.

The process is fairly painless. You authorize an account and then they request access to a specific game and BAM! You can play it on your own account and own computer. If the user is playing the game and you want to hop on, they will be prompted to either buy the game or have a few minutes to finish up/save their progress. Access is limited up to 10 users and not all games will work. Games that require a third party key or subscription (Think Star Trek Online or other MMO’s) cannot be shared.

For the full press release and expanded be sure to check out the official page HERE. Once there you can follow the directions to sign up for the beta and request access.

Ready to waste some time? Then you better check out Cookie Clicker. The game’s simple: you click and collect cookies which you can spend on upgrades and buildings to make even more cookies, which you can spend on even more upgrades and….

The guy responsible for this addictive bakery goes by Orteil, a French programmer who also created Nested, an interesting game where you expand on a universe folder to find super clusters, and then individual galaxies to a star system which leads to a planet that might support life to the separate organisms that live there and so on. It’s basically an infinite Matryoshka doll.

He plans to continue updating Cookie Clicker and even port it to various mobile platforms. Seriously, it’s awesome.

If this is just a genius marketing ploy agreed upon by all major pastry distributors then I’m not even mad. Play it, love it, and let us know how far you get!

Briefly: Ubisoft has just released a cool 14-minute gameplay video for what may just be my most anticipated game of the year, Watch Dogs.

The video gives us a neat sneak peek into some of the awesome multiplayer action that Watch Dogs has in store for us. I was mainly looking forward to the game’s single-player campaign, but the multiplayer here looks seriously awesome.

Take a look at the new video below, and let us know if you’ll be picking up the game! You’ll get your chance to take over Chicago on November 19th. Watch Dogs is set for release on PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Wii U, and PC.

In Watch_Dogs, players will assume the role of Aiden Pearce, a new type of vigilante who, with the help of his smartphone, will use his ability to hack into Chicago’s central operating system (ctOS) and control almost every element of the city. Aiden will be able to tap into the city’s omnipresent security cameras, download personal information to locate a target, control systems such as traffic lights or public transportation to stop a chase, and more. The city of Chicago is now the ultimate weapon.

At the completely logical hour of 4 AM this morning, Nintendo held a special Direct conference dedicated to the upcoming 3DS monstrosities, Pokemon X and Y. A slew of new announcements and revelations were made, but perhaps most importantly, were the revelations of two 3DS apps that will make the lives of Black and White players much easier.

Introducing Pokemon Bank, this app will allow players to hold up to 3000 different Pokemon using cloud storage. Taking the concepts of Pokemon Box, My Pokemon Ranch and the storage feature of Pokemon Stadium to new heights, Bank has more storage than one would ever need. I mean, seriously, cheaters can’t even hack that many characters, (don’t worry hackers, we won’t tell.) Whether or not the game will give rewards for storing certain amounts like the previously mentioned storage apps has yet to be announced.

As a supplemental app for Bank, Pokemon Transporter is designed to give you a head start in filling those 3000 slots by allowing trainers to mass transfer characters from Black, White, Black 2 and White 2 from Bank. Sadly, Diamond, Pearl and Platinum won’t be compatible, but it’s still better than that six at a time Pal Park crap.

Like with most good news, there’s a catch. While pricing wasn’t discussed, there was a smidge of small print snuck into the video stating that an annual fee must be paid to access Bank. As if Pokemon didn’t make enough money, charging for storage is a new way for the series to make bank, (pun not intended… okay, I lied.) Satoru Iwata quickly explained that the fee is necessary to maintain the servers, since the benefit of the cloud would allow trainers to access their teams like never before. And just like that, I broke into a PTSD fit thinking of the Xbox One launch.

Pokemon DollarShawty what chu drank?

So we’ll take the good with the bad, mostly because we don’t have a choice. I’m thrilled with the ability to mass transfer, but I hate that we’ll have to pay to transfer. Oh well, ’tis the age of DLC, AKA “the future.” What do you think? Do you got Poke’s in the bank waiting to be deposited? Let us know below!

This morning, gamers woke up to a collective head scratching. Nintendo has announced a redesign of their popular 3DS handheld, complete with a price drop and the removal of the clam shell design. Did we mention that it’s no longer 3D?

Removing the feature that the handheld was named after, this “2DS” will launch day and date with Pokemon X and Y on October 12th for $129. Serving as an entry level system, Nintendo is hoping to reach that five and six year old market, since the 3DS blinded anyone not over seven.

Aside from the loss of the 3D function and the ability to keep your screens from getting mauled in your pockets, the system will retain all of its other features. This includes, front and back cameras, (the latter which will still take 3D pictures,) DS backwards compatibility, Wi-Fi and Wireless access, a 4GB SD card and stereo output through headphones. All in all, a cheaper solution for those who have yet to buy what is the best gaming machine on the market right now if you were to ask me.

Can I just say that I’m happy to see the 3D go? Sure, some games like Kid Icarus Uprising looked great with the effect, but most games ignore it or treat it as an afterthought. It drains battery and is VERY unfriendly to portable gaming. For a system meant to play on the go, I can’t stand using 3D for more than a minute when in a moving vehicle that bounces my hands around, causing double vision better than a night of boozing ever could. While glasses free 3D is kind of cool, there’s a reason that 3D was a failed experiment of the 80’s. Welcome to the 21st Century, DS!

Do you think the 2DS will push sales through the roof this holiday? Will you be getting one? What do you think of the new design? Sound off in the comments and let us know.

Just tweeted a few hours ago on the official Gearbox twitter was a little bit of info about a soon to be released short film.

Gearbox Twitter Screencap

From glancing at the image I recognize Tiny Tina right away, could this be another trailer for an upcoming DLC? The last expansion for Borderlands 2 has yet to be released and some speculate that it may actually take place on the Hyperion Space Station. There isn’t anything more tangible than this little info we got. You can be sure that the moment this new short film is released we will let you know.

Borderlands 2 short film teaser

Is it October yet? With just two months between us and the release of Battlefield 4, the crew over at DICE are keeping the teases coming. In the most recent developer video, Aleksander Grondal walks us through a huge feature of the BF4 multiplayer experience. Levolution, sounds stupid, looks incredible.

The want factor just flew off the charts. I hope that these features of map changing moments aren’t just some scripted gimmicks.

You can get your copy of Battlefield 4 on October 29th on PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.

The hugely popular and crazy fun FPS, Chivalry: Medieval Warfare, is about to get a little bit bigger. The guys over at Torn Banner Studios have teamed up with Spike TV in order to give you a brand new expansion pack. Subtitled “Deadliest Warrior” (Based off the hit TV show of the same name) it promises to pit more than just Knights and Archers against each other. Take a look at the trailer with me!

If at this point you are asking yourself “Dafuq is Chivalry?” then let me bring you up to speed. Released October of last year from Torn Banner Studios, Chivalry is an online team battle game set in the Middle Ages. Think Counter Strike with swords and bows. Players pick one of two teams, a variety of classes to play and a myriad of weapons to wield. Game types range from all out brawl arena battles to rush objectives like storming a castle and killing the King. What really makes Chivalry stand out is the combat and physics system. You have a few different attack types at your disposal, and one on one battles turn into tests of skill over tests of button mashing and luck. Once you land a nice hit with your weapon, you are given a chance to see some very advanced gibbing. Body parts fly off with trails of blood and sinew behind them. It truly is a sight to behold.

The only other bit of news that was released with this trailer is that there is no other news. Torn Banner have said that they will send out a full Press Release on Monday. So sit right there and we will be sure to keep you updated.

Have you ever wanted to rule the world? Have you ever wanted to become the next great dictator? Well Tropico 5 has you covered. The Tropico series has been kind of a hidden gem of the simulation genre. Recent installments have had players ruling their own little Banana Republics while you manage international ties with Communist and Capitalist nations. Well Tropico 5 stands to take the series into a whole new direction, CONQUERING THE WORLD! Watch the trailer below. ( HINT: It is an homage to the Charlie Chaplin film The Great Dictator)

The biggest addition to the game is the Era and Online modes.  Taking players from early 19th century all the way to modern times. Can you survive both World Wars AND the Cold War? You can enlist the help of friends with the full Cooperative mode, sharing resources and tactics. This game is basically a Cuba simulator at heart. Check out the Press Release for the full details.

Packed with a whole host of new gameplay features and all new artwork designed from scratch, Tropico 5 takes the series into a new and exciting direction – dynasties!

You, as El Presidente, will first take control of the infamous island of Tropico during early colonial times and then guide it through the centuries as the world changes and moves ever forward. You must tackle the changing needs of your people, as well as opposing governments and factions, and thus lay the foundations for your own dynasty. As you move through your years in office you can promote members of your extended family on the island to positions of power: such as ambassador, commanding general or even Supreme Ruler, to ensure your legacy thrives through the eras. As your influence and wealth grows, so do the threats to your burgeoning island superpower. Can you survive both World Wars, prosper through the Great Depression, rule as an iron-fisted dictator through the Cold War and advance your country to modern times and beyond? From the 19th to the 21st century, each era carries its own challenges and opportunities.

As well as a wealth of other new features, including advanced trading mechanics, technology, scientific research trees and island exploration, Tropico 5 will add cooperative and competitive multiplayer for up to four players for the first time in the series’ history! Viva El Presidente!

No exact release date has been announced, just an ambiguous 2014. It will be playable at Gamescom and be available on the PC (Windows, Mac AND Linux) as well as the Xbox 360.

Polish game Dev CD Projekt Red appears to have knocked it out of the park AGAIN! The third in the series for their next level open world RPG, The Witcher, has just has just blown the gaming community’s’ collective mind. The CG in the cinematic is absolutely astounding. Please pump up it up to 1080P and let it buffer.

From the release:

CD Projekt RED is proud to present The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt “Killing Monsters” cinematic trailer to the public for the first time, offering a thrilling glimpse into the morally ambiguous universe of Geralt of Rivia.

“Killing Monsters” portrays the cruel and gritty world of The Witcher and foreshadows the mature mood of the upcoming story-driven RPG, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, set for release on PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2014.

The next iteration of the CoD franchise, CoD: Ghosts, is just a few months from release. The developers certainly are making a big deal out of this one. The game features real time lighting and advanced fish AI. We all know that the main draw of the game is the online multiplayer, and the guys over at Activision have just released this fancy new trailer.

Now, admittedly I went into this trailer thinking it was going to be the same old shit. But after watching I was pleasantly surprised. It looks like the team over at Infinity Ward is really trying to make the proper next step for their game. The new game modes look really fun, and the Battlefield style destruction should add a new variable to the hectic run and gun. But we all know what the best part of this trailer is, you get to play as a GIRL!

GoD: Ghosts ships out November 5th on PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Wii U and PC.

Hallelujah! Hallelujah! The clouds have parted and a great light began to shine down. What was once a terrible console plagued with DRM and an Electronic Eye constantly peering into your living room, has quickly changed.

In a recent interview with IGN, Xbox Corporate Vice President Marc Whitten said that the console will still function with the Kinect sensor unplugged. Though players will miss out on a bunch of the features like voice recognition and player recognition, you will still be able to access your games and entertainment.

This announcement is a couple months after they rescinded their decision for an always on console, as well as revised their used game stance. It looks like the gamers have spoken, and Microsoft answered.

The Xbox One is slated to be released sometime this November.

At the beginning of the week, I was thinking that there hadn’t been a Nintendo Direct conference since E3. Apparently since my mind willed it so, it was soon announced that yesterday’s Direct would take place, but after a two month wait, nearly 30 minutes of news wasn’t enough. It’s safe to say that the next Direct is poised to be “wonderful.”

Tomorrow at 10 AM Eastern and 7PM Pacific, a second Nintendo Direct for the week will play, which will be completely dedicated to the upcoming action title from Platinum Games, The Wonderful 101. The creators of Viewtiful Joe, Okami and Bayonetta have been working on this one since before the Wii U’s launch, so it will be exciting to find out what new information they have to share with the release date drawing closer.

In the mean time, check out our hands on previews of the game from last year’s E3 and at this year’s Comic Con. Be sure to check back tomorrow as we find out even more about what makes this highly anticipated game tick.

The Wonderful 101 is scheduled to hit the Wii U on September 15th.

When a new Pokemon game is on the horizon, a unique batch of evolutions are expected at this point. What makes the latest CoroCoro Magazine scans out of Japan so special is that the evolutions shown are monsters you might not expect. Fourth forms? Fan favorite base forms getting a new lease on life? And legendary evolution? Read on…

The scans show off new evolutions for Pokemon across multiple generations, including Lucario, Absol, Mawile, Ampharos, Blaziken and the already revealed Mewtwo form. Using a new type of evolution called “Mega Evolution,” how it works is unknown, but the characters in the scans seem to be the first revealed using this method. Check out the images below and be amazed! Or not. I don’t care.

Until this new Mewtwo, there were no legendary Pokemon that could evolve. More surprisingly, the fact that Blaziken and Ampharos are getting a fourth form opens the door for a slew of new, more powerful forms of Pokemon that we had all long thought were done growing. And lastly, Absol and Mawile are FINALLY getting evolved forms, hopefully making them more competitively viable in the process.

Additional scans also showed off a new gym leader who is related to the mystery of Mega Evolutions, a batch of new Pokemon, (including the pre-evolution of the previously revealed Gogoat,) and an advertisement for a Torchic distribution event. This Torchic comes to trainers holding a “Mega Stone.” Is this the key to the new evolutions? Probably.

God, I want to punch that mini Raichu thing. Anyway, there was quite a bit of new information here, but keep in mind that none of this is confirmed. If these are fakes however, I won’t even be mad considering how much detail is in these scans. If they’re real, these Mega Evolutions can be a real game changer.

Pokemon X and Y will release worldwide on October 12th.

Following in the footsteps of Skylanders and Disney Infinity, Pokemon Rumble U will see the release of 18 different figures to coincide with the game’s eShop release on August 29th.

While the characters on the toys can be obtained in the main game, (which features all 649 Pokemon to discover, a first for this spinoff series,) the figures can be leveled up throughout the adventure. Previous installments made swapping attacks difficult and didn’t have a level up system, so players were constantly discarding weaker creatures and replacing them with new ones as the game advanced. With the figures, you’ll be able to have a reliable team to fight at your side, but if buying toys isn’t your thing, Rumble U is still fully playable without dropping the extra cash.

As much of a cash cow as Pokemon is, I’m surprised it took this long to make toys around a game that’s literally about Pokemon toys. Each figure will be $4, making the complete set a whopping $64 total. A hell of an investment for a downloadable game that’s less than $20 on its own, but hey, you gotta catch em all, right?

Between the Smash Bros. Miiverse page and the official website, the developers have promised a screenshot every day leading up to the 2014 release of the game. Unless a new character is announced, it’s rare that the shot is anything worth mentioning, but every once in awhile, a new bread crumb will drop that will keep us salivating for more juicy tidbits.

Yesterday was one such day, with a teaser for a potential Pilotwings stage. No, we’re not talking Wuhu Island from Pilotwings Resort, or even the islands from the N64 launch title, Pilotwings 64. It looks like they’re going way back with a stage based on the original game for the SNES. You remember, the game that started as a flight sim and ended up as a rescue mission in a sudden twist that would make M. Night Shyamalan proud? They don’t make them like they used to.

This possible stage reveal was a pleasant surprise. What else will Smash Bros. have in store for us? Stay tuned to Geekscape and you’ll find out as soon as we do.

Today’s Nintendo Direct has made it official: Luigi will be making his big return to the fighting ring in the upcoming Super Smash Bros. game for Wii U and 3DS. Joining Captain Olimar as the newest veteran to be confirmed, the green clad plumber is sure to bring his unique brand of offense with him. While I’m sure this comes as a surprise to no one, it’s worth mentioning that his move set from the screenshots so far look identical to Melee and Brawl, which is fine with me as long as his weird Final Smash is changed to something relevant like his Poltergust.

But this wasn’t all for everyone’s favorite player 2, because it was mentioned that good ol’ Weegee will also be available from the start as a default roster member. All of the previous games made him a hidden fighter, so after getting his own year, it’s clear to see that the little brother is still coming up in 2014.

Celebrate Luigi’s inclusion in Smash Bros. by scrolling through the latest batch of screenshots, then let us know who you want to be announced next!

At the end of this morning’s Nintendo Direct video, Satoru Iwata shared the stage with Isabelle, the incredibly stunning assistant to the mayor in Animal Crossing: New Leaf, and unveiled Animal Crossing Plaza for Wii U. When is it coming, you ask? That’s the best part, because we’ll have to wait for a grand total of… nothing! That’s right, the plaza is available now!

Acting as its own version of WaraWara Plaza, (where Mii’s you come across talk about the latest games they’re playing,) 3DS mayors will be able to use their SD cards on the Wii U to share screenshots, QR codes for those outfits you’ve spent hours making, and discuss villagers with other players. Outside of the plaza, a special Miiverse community has opened up for the series, so Wii U owners can set up all the shady trades they want directly through Nintendo now.

The bad part? The service will only be available until the end of 2014, so soak it up while you can. It has to be a first for a company to announce that they’re dropping support for a feature right after it’s announced, but maybe it’s incentive for all those New Leaf owners to buy a Wii U? Nah, didn’t think so.

Who else can’t wait to WaraWara with their villagers?
