Briefly: As a huge fan of Heroes initial four season run (yes, I watched it all the way through), I was beyond excited when NBC announced Heroes Reborn in February of last year. The first series ended with an infuriating cliffhanger, and after a resolution was promised via a film, and then via comic book, and then essentially never spoken about again, I thought that surely the universe of Heroes was simply dead.

And then Heroes Reborn was announced, and people like Jack Coleman and Masi Oka were confirmed to return, and I’ve pretty much been squealing with anticipation ever since.

Today, newcomer Zachary Levi tweeted out the first cast photo from the 13-episode series (minus Masi Oka), and the return of one of my favourite shows (at least during a few of my teenage years) feels all the more real. Take a look at the photo below, and be sure to let us know if you’re looking forward to Heroes Reborn!

Yep, it’s really happening.

Briefly: Variety has learned that Arrow star and heartthrob Stephen Amell has been cast as Casey Jones in the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sequel. More than six actors were said to have tested for the role, and Amell was apparently chosen due to his chemistry with Fox.

Details on the film are still few (it was first announced back in August), but both Megan Fox and Will Arnett are set to return, while Earth to Echo director Dave Green will take the reigns from Jonathan Liebesman.

I have to say that, while I was definitely not looking forward to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles last year, the film turned out to be a fun, yet forgettable time. It was almost, almost worth it for the cowabunga, don’t you agree?

Are you looking forward to the sequel? Be sure to let us know in the comments below.

Briefly: Just yesterday Warner Bros. debuted three sexy new TV spots for next month’s Mad Max: Fury Road, and today they’ve debuted an absolutely gorgeous new trailer that’s chock-full of insane looking new footage.

As I noted yesterday, to this day I’m a Mad Max virgin, but that’s a problem that I’ll definitely have solved by the time May 15th rolls around.

In the film, “Haunted by his turbulent past, Mad Max believes the best way to survive is to wander alone. Nevertheless, he becomes swept up with a group fleeing across the Wasteland in a War Rig driven by an elite Imperator, Furiosa. They are escaping a Citadel tyrannized by the Immortan Joe, from whom something irreplaceable has been taken. Enraged, the Warlord marshals all his gangs and pursues the rebels ruthlessly in the high-octane Road War that follows.”

Take a look at the trailer below, and be sure to let us know what you think!

Briefly: I remember being so excited for the Pride and Prejudice and Zombies adaptation when it was first announced back in 2009 (the same year that the book was first published). Since then, the film has shifted stars, directors, studios, and more, and after seeing the first image from the actually happening film back in November, we finally know just when we’ll be able to see it.

Screen Gems has scheduled the film for a February 19th, 2016 release, which is less than eleven months away at this point. As before, the film is directed by 17 Again and Charlie St. Cloud director Burr Steers, with a script from Steers and David O. Russell.

really enjoyed the novel, turning something that was nearly impossible for me to get through into something funny, original, and incredibly intriguing. I really can’t wait to see how the film adaptation turns out. For now, take another look at that first image below, and be sure to let us know what you think!

PPZ1

Briefly: I’m still not overly familiar with the Mad Max series, but these incredibly gorgeous spots for the upcoming Fury Road are making me rethink my entire life.

The spots look insane, are action packed, and instantly excite even a Mad Max virgin like myself. Take a look at the videos below, and be sure to let us know how excited you are for this one. Mad Max: Fury Road hits theatres on May 15th!

Briefly: Today is apparently a hot day for spinoff news. First, The Walking Dead spinoff Fear the Walking Dead received its first short but sweet teaser trailer, and now both Hawkgirl and Rip Hunter have been cast for The CW’s Arrow / The Flash spinoff.

Law and Order: SVU guest and Broadway star Ciara Renée has been cast as Kendra Saunders / Hawkgirl in the upcoming (and anticipated) as yet untitled series.  Deadline notes that Saunders “is a young woman who is just beginning to learn that she has been repeatedly reincarnated over the centuries. When provoked, her ancient warrior persona manifests itself, along with wings that grow out of her back, earning her the moniker Hawkgirl.”

Renee

Doctor Who alum Arthur Darvill has also joined the project, and will portray Rip Hunter, “a roguish time traveler who hides the strains of being responsible for history itself behind a facade of charm and wit.”

Darvill

It’s also noted that the series is set to feature three DC characters that we haven’t yet seen on TV, with Darvill’s Rip Hunter being the first announced. The two join already revealed returning characters, like Brandon Routh’s The Atom, Wentworth Miller’s Captain Cold, Dominic Purcell’s Heat Wave, and more.

Are you looking forward to the series? Or are we already at critical mass for comic book series on television? Sound out below!

Briefly: AMC finally revealed the official title just a few days ago, and now we officially have the first teaser for this Summer’s Fear the Walking Dead.

Back when franchise creator Robert Kirkman revealed the first details about the spinoff series, it certainly sounded like Fear the Walking Dead wouldn’t be the full-on prequel that many were hoping for. Fans, more than they wanted to see another side of the United States, wanted to see how this whole shitstorm began, but when Kirkman stated that “The timeline is taking place a little bit earlier than the original show,” it didn’t sound as though we’d be getting the origin story many were hoping for.

The first teaser however, makes us feel differently. It’s very short, but highly revelatory on the timeline of the series (or at least its beginning):

Interesting enough, the teaser’s voiceover states that ‘a strange virus is going around.’ Is just being infected enough to turn someone with a weak immune system into a walker? As we all know, we are all infected, and for most it’s, well, actually dying that turns one into a walker, so it’ll be interesting to see how the first full on zombies come to be.

Fear the Walking Dead is set to debut this Summer, and I’m definitely more excited for this series now that we know just when it’ll begin (timeline wise). How do you guys feel about the spinoff? Sound out below!

Briefly: It’s pretty clear if you’ve seen our co-produced Doc of the Dead that here at Geekscape we’re pretty big fans of the undead. Saying that, we were more than excited to learn that this June, Double Take is set to debut not one, but three new titles set in the universe of George A. Romero’s 1968 classic Night of the Living Dead.

All three monthly series are set to debut this June in print and digital formats, and you can peek the first info and cover for each series by taking a look below!

Home, written by Peter Aguero, with art by Julian Rowe, Monica Catalano, and Javier Mena

:

A happy family, a lovely spring evening, and Zombies.

Home follows a working-class farm family through the events of the zombie apocalypse in western PA. On the night the dead rise, the Foster family has gathered for a quiet Sunday dinner. Oblivious to the horrifying events that will soon unfold, Paul Foster takes his wife and two young children into town, leaving his teenage daughter home alone with her boyfriend. As his small town falls into chaos, Paul has to keep his family together and somehow get back home to his daughter, who is left to fight her own battles.

Z-Men comes from writer Jeff McComsey, and features art by Kurt Tiede, Alisson Rodrigues,  and Max Flan:

Dead and/or alive. LBJ orders the Secret Service to bring him back a Zombie.
It’s 1966 and the Oval Office is in an uproar; there’s been a spree of mass murders in Western Pennsylvania (and reports of the dead returning to life). President Lyndon B. Johnson assigns the head of the Secret Service to send agents into the field to investigate. Agents Stuart and Clancy are given the opportunity to serve their country and see if the zombie apocalypse has indeed begun.

Rise also comes from Jeff McComsey, and features art by Kurt Tiede, Frederica Manfredi, and Vladimir Popov

:

They’re coming to get you Barbara. Follow our favorite siblings, Barbara and Johnny, from the classic 1968 Night of the Living Dead film as they try to survive beyond the night at the abandoned farmhouse.

Rise_1_CVR

All three book sound very cool, and I’m especially excited to follow the continuing adventures of Barbara and Johnny. Not to mention that gorgeous art. As 2T notes, “this marks the first releases in a major initiative surrounding the classic horror franchise, which frightened moviegoers all around the world and made zombies a household name. Having commissioned a new generation of writers to breathe new life into the classic franchise, 2T has a dozen series in the works – some following characters from the film in surprising new directions; other stories are all new. All creators are working in collaboration with 2T GM, Bill Jemas.”

Briefly: Hot on the heels of announcing graphic novels based on Michael Dougherty’s Trick ‘r Treat and KrampusLegendary Comics today announced three new titles; a continuation of 2013’s Pacific Rim: Tales From Year Zero, and two entirely new IP’s.

Pacific Rim: Tales From The Drift will launch as a four-issue monthly series this November. Presented by Pacific Rim director Guillermo Del Toro, and with a story by Pacific Rim creator Travis Beacham (who we had on Geekscape way back when), Tales From The Drift is written by Joshua Fialkov (The Bunker, I, Vampire, Elk’s Run) and features artwork by Marcos Marz (Batman Confidential, Blackest Night: JSA). More info on the book is still to come, but Tales From The Drift is said to feature Jaegers never before seen in combat, squaring off against all-new Kaiju creatures. Take a look at two preview pages below, and read on for the new IP’s!

Next up is espionage thriller Black Bag. This one’s about a suburban wife-turned-covert government assassin comes from writer Chris Roberson, creator of the breakout comic iZombie (you know, the one that just got a fantastic series), and features art from fast-rising talent JB Bastos, known for his standout work on Lion Forge’s Night TrapBlack Bag will run for six issues, and is set to debut this Fall. Unlike Tales From The Drift, this one’s already got a synopsis, which is as follows:

A suburban housewife with a criminal past and a thirst for adrenaline is about to get a top-secret side job: carrying out the government’s most dangerous missions.

Renear is tired of playing by the rules. A valedictorian and top athlete in her younger years, she’s sacrificed a promising career to tie the knot and play house… isn’t there more to life than this? Of course there is – if you’re willing to take the shot.

It’s time the world found out what she is truly capable of.

Here’s a gorgeous preview page:

Finally, it’s Cops for Criminals, a daring new crime-thriller series about a federal agent forced to find true justice in the criminal underworld. This one’s got some all-star talent attached as it’s written by Steven Grant (Punisher War Journal, Avengers, Hulk, X) with art from Pete Woods (Deadpool, Robin, Catwoman). Here’s the synopsis:

When a federal agent becomes a victim of the system he has sworn to uphold, he finds true justice in the criminal underworld.

Agent Woods was one of the best – but everything changed when he was wrongfully convicted and labeled a traitor. After serving his time, this ex-convict is cut loose onto the lawless streets to fight corruption on both sides of the law. Even criminals need a code – and every code needs an enforcer.

Which books will you be adding to your pull list? For me? Easy. All of them!

As a huge fan of DVDuesday’s long, long stint over at G4, I would absolutely love to see it return bigger and better than ever.

But DVDuesday, as great as it is, isn’t the only thing Chris Gore wants to save. Back in high school, Chris created Film Threat, a magazine that would become a website which would grow to be one of the leading sources for independent and underground film on the entire internet.

Now, we’ve known Chris for as long as we can remember. He’s been a guest on Geekscape multiple times, and even ended up on Geekdrome back when I would have been in my early teens. If there’s one thing that I’ve learned about Chris over meeting him at various cons, and watching him for years on Attack of the Show, it’s that he’s passionate as hell about film. So passionate, in fact, that he used the money from his TV appearances for years to continue funding Film Threat.

Now, with television nigh-unrecognizable from what it once was, and the everything’s-free-on-YouTube mindset of today’s internet, Film Threat is in need of saving, and Chris needs our help to do it.

Chris has set a $125,000 goal, and with 28 days remaining is currently nearing $8,000 in pledges. It’s far more expensive to run a website such as Film Threat than one could ever imagine (before considering things like the new show and podcast network), and Chris has broken down the funding into an easy-to-read infographic:

FilmThreat

For those of you who prefer words, here’s a more descriptive breakdown:

The Film Threat web site was launched in 1996. That’s 19 years worth of content making up more than 80,000 stories on a site that has to be redesigned and reformatted. Relaunching a site of this size with this amount of content is costly and I can’t afford to fund it alone this time. I’ll need money for programmers, designers, and for a new server along with a budget for writers and an editorial team to keep it going. The money will also be used to help fund the production budget for the weekly DVDuesday segments. A budget will also be needed to create a Film Threat app and build a Podcast Network to give our writers a voice beyond the site. The budget I’ve put together should give us the boost we need to continue. And while it seems like a lot of money, anyone who has run a web site with daily content or produced a weekly web show knows that it costs more than one would think. The amount I’ve budgeted covers the site relaunch, a podcast network, an app and a web series. All of this covers Phase One of Film Threat’s return. (I’ll reveal Phase Two initiatives once we get to 90% of our funding goal.) If we exceed our funding goal, we’ll be able to do more episodes of DVDuesday and we can fund stretch goal projects planned for Phase Two.

As always, there are some pretty fantastic rewards available to backers. Everything from 30th anniversary posters, to DVD’s from Chris’s personal collection, to t-shirts, to the ability to hang out on the new DVDuesday’s set, to rare Film Threat collectibles. There’s a ton of great stuff here for Film Threat fans.

We’ll also be having Chris on the show next week to talk about the campaign, as well as the unfortunately necessary cancellation of Chris’s upcoming Fan Fiction panel at WonderCon.

Take a look the the Save Film Threat campaign video below, and head here to back! Even if you can’t help fund the project, be sure to share it so we can help Chris achieve his goal!

High kick!

Head on over to the KickStarter page and help out!

Briefly: People joke that the libraries of the PS4 and Xbox One are nothing but HD rereleases at this point, and amidst big name delay after big name delay, it’s really starting to feel like that’s true.

So shortly after what is arguably the PS4’s most anticipated title, Uncharted 4, was pushed back to 2016, Sony revealed that God of War III will hit its newest console this Summer.

The game looks pretty gorgeous in full 1080p, and is targeting 60FPS, but at this point I’m kinda sick of HD rereleases. Sony notes that “This action packed thrill ride of a game will take series newcomers and regulars alike on a retina-popping thrill ride filled to the absolute brim with 1080p gameplay, silky smooth combat, earth-shaking weapons, bosses you simply have to face to believe, and an all-new new photo mode so you can share those most tender of God of War moments, like stabbing a Minotaur in the frickin face, with your friends and loved ones.”

God of War III Remastered will hit the PS4 on July 14th. Take a look at a coupe of screenshots below, and let us know if you’re excited for this, or if you’d rather play some new games instead.

God of War® III Remastered_20150311214233

Briefly: Yesterday marked our first look at this Summer’s probably-going-to-be-awesome Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation, and today a much longer trailer for the film debuted online.

It looks totally ridiculous, and seriously awesome.

In the film, “IMF agent Ethan Hunt is tracked down by The Syndicate, a highly trained organization of rogue assassins that kill on order. With the help of his colleagues, he plans to bring The Syndicate down by any means necessary.”

The film stars Tom Cruise (of course), Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, Alec Baldwin, and more, and will hit theatres on July 31st. Take a look at the new trailer below, and be sure to let us know what you think!

Briefly: If you’re playing Telltale’s adaptation of Game of Thrones (and if you’re a fan of the series or books, you definitely should be), you’ll be happy to know that the developer has just released a stellar launch trailer for the game’s next episode, and that you’ll be able to play it VERY soon.

The episode is titled “The Sword in the Darkness”, and it will debut on PC, Mac, PS3, and PS4 tomorrow (March 24th), Xbox 360 and Xbox One on March 25th, and iOS and Android devices on March 26th.

The game “tells the story of House Forrester. Caught up in the events of The War of the Five Kings, they are placed in a precarious position where members of the household must do everything they can to prevent the house from meeting its doom.”

Take a look at the new trailer below, and let us know if you’re enjoying the game so far!

Briefly: This is some fantastic news.

I was beyond excited back in October 2013 when Legendary Pictures finally announced a sequel to Michael Dougherty’s celebrated Trick ‘r Treat, and the company has revealed that the world of Trick ‘r Treat AND Dougherty’s still mysterious Krampus are set to continue via graphic novels.

Legendary has done a great job with its film tie-ins to Pacific Rim and Godzilla, so I’m really hopeful for what they’re developing here. Trick ‘r Treat also happens to be my favourite Halloween themed movie, so I’ll eat up any continuation of this world that I can.

Dougherty said that “I’ve been having way too much fun working with Legendary and the rest of my team bringing the ancient legend of Krampus to the big screen, and I look forward to expanding the film’s dark Christmas mythology onto the comic page. And hopefully the fans who’ve been patiently waiting for TRICK ‘R TREAT 2 will enjoy this deeper peek into Sam’s world until he finally rises from the pumpkin patch once more. Happy Holidays.”

The Trick ‘r Treat graphic novel features stories by Michael Dougherty, Zach Shields, and Todd Casey, while Mark Andreyko will actually take care of writing it. Art will come from (yes) Fiona Staples, Zid, Stuart Sayger, and Stephen Byrne. Here’s the synopsis for the book:

The dark and twisted face of the cult horror hit Trick ‘R Treat is back… are you ready for the return of Sam?

With the official graphic novel Trick ‘r Treat, Legendary dares you to experience four all-new terrifying tales set in the universe ofthe ultimate Halloween anthology.

From the twisted imagination of series creator Dougherty (screenwriter of X-Men 2 and Superman Returns) and a top-notch team of horror storytellers and artists, comes this 4-part collection that paves the way for the Trick ‘r Treat film sequel. Across centuries of Halloween horror, wherever fear lies, Sam will be waiting.

The Krampus book features story by the same trio, and will be written by Brandon Seifert. This time, the art comes from Michael Montenat, Stuart Sayger, Maan House, and Christian DiBari. Here’s the synopsis:

YOU BETTER WATCH OUT…
If you want to survive the holidays, stay off the naughty list.

Legendary Comics presents Krampus, the official graphic novel based on the upcoming horror comedy from writer/director Michael Dougherty (creator of Trick ‘r Treat).

Unleashing the ancient Christmas demon Krampus and his maniacal holiday-themed henchmen, Krampus mixes fear, fun and festive thrills for an adventure that will change the way you see the holidays forever.

Trick ‘r Treat will release in October, and Krampus will hit stores in November. Take a look at the key art for Trick ‘r Treat below, and let us know if you’re as excited as I am!

Briefly: The long awaited Deadpool movie is currently shooting in Vancouver, and star T.J. Miller today revealed just who he’ll be playing in the anticipated feature:

Yep, as many expected, he’ll be playing Weasel, “a friend, sidekick, information broker and arms dealer for Deadpool. Weasel is perhaps Deadpool’s best friend. However, because of his frequent mood swings and tenuous mental state, Deadpool still often abuses or mistreats him, although Weasel has also displayed an opportunistic streak against his friend on occasions.”

The still mysterious film also stars Ryan Reynolds and Gina Carano, and is set to hit theatres on February 12th, 2016.

Are you looking forward to the film? Sound out below!

Briefly: Following the reveal of Ruth Negga as Tulip just yesterday, the next cast member for AMC’s Preacher adaptation has been revealed.

Again, it’s not Jesse (meaning we’ll have to keep waiting to see if those Dominic Cooper rumours were true), but is one of the DC/Vertigo title’s most interesting characters: Eugene “Areseface” Root. “Even with his horribly disfigured face and severe speech impediment, Eugene’s still the nicest kid you’ll ever meet and really looks up to Jesse. Stomach-churningly difficult to look at, Eugene’s the town’s reviled Frankenstein’s monster, but that won’t change his earnest, sweet and pure outlook on life. However, he is troubled by something terrible he’s done in the past — something he fears might have turned God himself against him.”

The character will be played by youngin’ Ian Colletti.

Briefly: This looks so freaking good.

Somehow (despite being a huge fan of 28 Days Later, Sunshine, AND Dredd) Alex Garland’s directorial debut, Ex Machina somehow slipped under my radar until I saw a few post-SXSW reviews. A new trailer for the film has just hit the web, and wow, wow, wow, does this look good.

Did it slip you by too? Here’s the synopsis:

Caleb Smith (Domhnall Gleeson), a programmer at an internet-search giant, wins a competition to spend a week at the private mountain estate of the company’s brilliant and reclusive CEO, Nathan Bateman (Oscar Isaac). Upon his arrival, Caleb learns that Nathan has chosen him to be the human component in a Turing Test—charging him with evaluating the capabilities, and ultimately the consciousness, of Nathan’s latest experiment in artificial intelligence. That experiment is Ava (Alicia Vikander), a breathtaking A.I. whose emotional intelligence proves more sophisticated––and more deceptive––than the two men could have imagined.

Sounds pretty neat, right. Now check out this visually spectacular trailer.

Ex Machina goes wide on April 10th, and I really can’t wait to see it. How about you?

Briefly: The first cast member for AMC’s highly anticipated Preacher adaptation has just been revealed, and… It’s not Dominic Cooper.

In fact, it’s not even for the role of Jesse Custer.

Instead, it’s for the role of Jesse’s ex-girlfriend Tulip, who Deadline describes as “a volatile, action-packed, sexified force of nature, a capable, unrepentant criminal with a love of fashion and ability to construct helicopter-downing bazookas out of coffee cans and corn shine who’s not afraid to steal, kill or corn cob-stab her way out of a bad situation.”

She’ll be played by Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s Ruth Negga.

Now, I haven’t read Preacher since I was in my early teens, but I’m really looking forward to checking out what Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and AMC do with the property. It’s a bit too vulgar for TV from what I remember, but the network gets away with some borderline content with The Walking Dead, so it’ll be very interesting to see how this one turns out.

Do you agree with the casting? Who do you want to see as Jesse Custer? Sound out below!

Briefly: When the highly sought-after Gold Mario Amiibo figure was officially announced for Canada this morning, I (being Canadian) was quick to notice that the figure carried an increased price tag of $15.99 (as opposed to the $13.99 we’re used to paying).

I hoped (without much confidence) that the higher price was due to the special nature of this figuring, but after reaching out to Nintendo of Canada, I received the official word:

After careful review, Nintendo of Canada Ltd. will increase the suggested retail price of its amiibo toy-to-life product line beginning April 1, 2015. The MSRP will increase from $13.99 CAD to $15.99 CAD for all amiibo launched in Canada after April 1. The price increase is in direct response to current and future projected exchange rates between Canadian and US dollars. Retailers are free to set their own prices.

It’s not surprising by any means, as our ailing dollar has led to price increases for video games, consoles, and countless other electronics. It would be fantastic, however, if our dollar saw a turnaround sometime soon so that my insane habits could be a little more affordable.

The two dollar price increase certainly hasn’t made the hunt any less attractive, I guess I’ll just have to eat a little more ramen to keep my collection complete. Canadians, what do you think?

NOVEL_ura_0613

Briefly: Rejoice, Canadians!

After tons of speculation and doubt (and non-communication) as to whether or not we’d see the Gold Mario Amiibo in Canada at all, Nintendo has officially revealed that the figure will hit retailers across Canada on April 10th. From the just received Press Release:

In addition, on April 10 Nintendo of Canada will launch the Super Mario series Mario amiibo—Gold Edition figure, a shiny, gold-coloured Mario figure that will be available at retailers across Canada at a suggested retail price of $15.99.

This is great news. As a Canadian with a current-until-Friday collection of 29/29, I was just about to head to eBay to acquire this sexy new figure. Now it appears that I won’t have to. Note that Nintendo states retailers across Canada, meaning that this won’t be a Wal Mart exclusive up here! $15.99 however, is an interesting price point. I’m really hoping we’re seeing the increase simply because this is a limited edition figure, and that it’s not the new standard Amiibo price in Canada. Damn dollar.

So Canadians, will you be picking one of these up? Or did you already turn to eBay? Sound out below!

NOVEL_ura_0613

Briefly: After what seems like forever (I remember playing in a Pixels themed arcade at last year’s SDCC) the first trailer for Adam Sandler’s Pixels has finally hit the web.

In the film, “When aliens misinterpret video feeds of classic arcade games as a declaration of war, they attack the Earth in the form of the video games.”

I’ve never been a big fan of Sandler’s work (I think that Click may be the last Sandler film that I saw), but being that this one is video game related, it’s sure going to be hard to avoid. This trailer doesn’t do all that much for me (though it does have a cool premise), but I get an Evolution vibe from the film, which can (hopefully) only be a good thing.

What do you think? Are you more interested in the film because of its video game tie-in? Did you find yourself laughing at the trailer? Be sure to let us know! Pixels hits theatres on July 24th!

Briefly: I never thought I’d see the day.

Nintendo today announced a partnership with DeNa Co. that will bring Nintendo’s franchises to mobile platforms, and also potentially bring Nintendo’s online services into this decade.

According to the release, “both companies will develop and operate new game apps based on Nintendo’s IP, including its iconic game characters, for smart devices. The alliance is intended to complement Nintendo’s dedicated video game systems business and extend Nintendo’s reach into the vast market of smart device users worldwide. Under the alliance, DeNA will also be able to strengthen its gaming business at a global scale by leveraging Nintendo’s IP. To ensure the quality of game experience that consumers expect from this alliance of Nintendo and DeNA, only new original games optimized for smart device functionality will be created, rather than porting games created specifically for the Wii U home console or the Nintendo 3DS portable system.”

Insane. INSANE. And great to see that both companies will be focussing only on new experiences rather than porting over (and selling us) the same ol’ Nintendo titles that we’ve been buying for years and years. It’ll be very interesting to see just how different these games end up, since if, for instance, you’ve tried to play a platformer on your phone, it typically doesn’t go very well.

The release continues, and arguably gets even more interesting, stating that “Nintendo and DeNA also plan to develop an online membership service that is accessible from smart devices, PC and Nintendo systems, such as the Nintendo 3DS portable system and the Wii U home console. The membership service, which is targeted to launch in the fall of 2015, will be built on DeNA’s extensive experience and capabilities in online membership services.”

Could this be the much asked for and long awaited account services that we’ve been asking for for years? You know, the type that other consoles have had since the last generation? We can only hope! I can barely imagine being able to log into my Nintendo account and redownload titles purchases on another unit… which is really sad as it’s 2015.

What do you think of the announcement? Are you looking forward to playing Nintendo titles on your iPhone? Or will you be sticking with your 3DS? Sound out below!

Briefly: As a huge fan of the first two-thirds of both Insidious films, I really can’t wait to see the first two-thirds of this one.

The first official theatrical trailer for Insidious: Chapter 3 has just debuted online, bringing with it a new star and a new, pretty much unconnected (from the looks of it) storyline. This chilling prequel, set before the haunting of the Lambert family, reveals how gifted psychic Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye) reluctantly agrees to use her ability to contact the dead in order to help a teenage girl (Stefanie Scott) who has been targeted by a dangerous supernatural entity.

The video gives us a much better look at the film than the teaser before, and Chapter 3 definitely looks to carry the terrifying tone of the first two features. The film is set for a June 5th release. Take a look at the trailer below, and let us know if you’re into this third chapter!

Briefly: All of us here at Geekscape are beyond excited for this Summer’s Jurassic World, but the sure-to-be-blockbuster is also getting a licensed game that we can’t wait to get our hands on.

It’s called Lego Jurassic World, and like many of Traveller’s Tales Lego titles, it’ll span the entire franchise of films… even Jurassic Park 3.

A new trailer for the game, which is slated to hit PS3, PS4, PS Vita, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Wii U, Nintendo 3DS, and Windows alongside the film this June, has just hit the web, and it’s filled to the brim with that classic Traveller’s Tales humour.

Take a look at the trailer below, and be sure to let us know if you’re looking forward to the title, and don’t forget your thoughts on Jurassic World!

Briefly: Following the addition of Lady Gaga to American Horror Story‘s fifth seasonHotel, FX has revealed two new additions to the cast, and confirmed on unfortunate departure.

Matt Bomer and Cheyenne Jackson, who both had guesting roles on American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy’s Glee, have joined Hotel in undisclosed roles.

Bomer noted that “I love collaborating with Ryan Murphy. It feels like this world where there are no bounds.”

Sadly, Jessica Lange, who has been a series star since its very inception, confirmed rumours at Payleyfest that she will depart the series, and will not be a part of season five.

Briefly: Fans of AMC’s The Walking Dead have been wondering for some time just how the upcoming spinoff series will relate to the already established universe, and this weekend at SXSW, The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman spilled finally let loose some details.

Via EW:

“It’s not going to relate to the comics at all,” Kirkman said. “From the beginning of the show one thing we’ve heard is, ‘What’s going on over here or there.’ So the intent of the new show is to expand that world and show another corner of the United States and what’s happening there. The timeline is taking place a little bit earlier than the original show. Rick Grimes woke up from a coma and was like, ‘Oh, man, zombies, weird!’ We’re going to possibly see that unfold a little more in the other show. But I wouldn’t call it ‘prequel’ because the entirety of the show is not going take place before [The Walking Dead]. It will eventually form a path running concurrently.”

”One thing that we’re doing with the new show that we’re trying with everything is it’s not derivative,” he said. “It’s standing on its own. You can watch it by itself and get your own experience. But if you are watching both shows there are things like, ‘Oh they discovered this, or they discovered that in a different way.’ There are a lot of things about The Walking Dead world these characters have to learn or figure out to get by. And there may be some things that are discovered in the companion show that haven’t been discovered in the other show yet. So there could be like a thing where, ‘Oh, they encountered a zombie in season 4 in The Walking Dead that could do this and now we know why that was.’ So we’re going to be doing things like that are going to be pretty cool, but for the most part [the two shows] should be able to stand alone.”

Based on Kirkman’s quotes, it sounds like the new series (whatever it’s called) won’t be the beginning-of-the-apocalypse tale that many were looking forward to, but will instead be set just slightly before the original series. I was wondering just how connected it will be to the already established show, and I’m glad to read that this series is mean to be standalone, since ain’t nobody got time for two versions of The Walking Dead.

The yet untitled series will premiere its first six-episode season this Summer, with a second season set to premiere in 2016. Are you looking forward to the spinoff? Or is one series enough? Sound out below!

Briefly: Following the film’s first teaser trailer from all the way back in January, TotalFilm has just debuted four new stills from Josh Trank’s Fantastic Four.

It’s been a long road for the controversial film, but I have to say that I’m looking forward to seeing Trank’s vision for the team. I was a big fan of Chronicle, so it’ll be great to see if he has another gem in him. In any case, this looks nothing like the previous Fantastic Four films, which can only be a good thing (and it really couldn’t be worse, could it?)

Take a look at the stills below, and let us know if you’re looking forward to the film. Fantastic Four hits theatres on August 7th.

FANTASTIC FOUR, a contemporary re-imagining of Marvel’s original and longest-running superhero team, centers on four young outsiders who teleport to an alternate and dangerous universe, which alters their physical form in shocking ways. Their lives irrevocably upended, the team must learn to harness their daunting new abilities and work together to save Earth from a former friend turned enemy.

Briefly: While we’re all twiddling our thumbs until December 18th, Disney is certainly not standing still. The studio today officially revealed and dated the first Star Wars spinoff, and also announced the release date for Episode VIII.

Bob Iger announced the news at today’s Disney shareholders meeting. Here’s what was revealed, straight from StarWars.com:

Rogue One is the title for the first film in a unique series of big-screen adventures that explores the characters and events beyond the core Star Wars saga. Rogue One will be directed by Gareth Edwards (MonstersGodzilla) and written by Oscar nominee Chris Weitz (CinderellaAbout a BoyAntz). The first actress cast is Felicity Jones, who garnered an Academy Award nomination and critical acclaim for her performance in The Theory of Everything. The idea for the story of Rogue One came from John Knoll, an Academy Award-winning visual effects supervisor and chief creative officer at Industrial Light & Magic. He will executive produce along with Simon Emanuel (The Dark Knight RisesFast & Furious 6) and Jason McGatlin (TintinWar of the Worlds). Kathleen Kennedy and Tony To (Band of BrothersThe Pacific) are on board to produce and John Swartz (Star Wars: The Force Awakens) will co-produce. The film starts shooting this summer in London and is due for release on December 16, 2016.

In addition, Iger confirmed that Rian Johnson will write and direct Star Wars: Episode VIII. The film, which continues the saga after the events of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, is set for release on May 26, 2017 — forty years and a day after the release of Star Wars: A New Hope in 1977. Johnson is widely considered one of cinema’s most gifted young filmmakers, having directed the modern sci-fi classic, Looper, as well as Brick and The Brothers Bloom. He was also behind the camera for three episodes of the critically-acclaimed TV series Breaking Bad, including “Ozymandias,” which series creator Vince Gilligan named as the best installment of the show. Kathleen Kennedy and Ram Bergman, producer of LooperDon JonBrick, and The Brothers Bloom, are on board to produce.

I have to say that I’m beyond excited for both of these films. I was a big fan of last year’s Godzilla, and can’t wait to see what Gareth Edwards can do when he’s taken to space (and who doesn’t love Felicity Jones). On the flipside, both Brick and Looper from Rian Johnson are films I’ve watched a multitude of times, and as many issues as Looper had, it was still quite the incredible, thought provoking production. I’m really looking forward to seeing what he can do with a (probably much) bigger budget, and a vastly larger universe.

So, in case you forgot, Rogue One is coming on December 16th, 2016, while Episode VIII will drop on May 26, 2017. That’s a lot of Star Wars.

Briefly: Hankering for more iZombie after reading Eric’s fantastic interview with the show’s Executive Producer Diane Ruggiero-Wright?

The CW has just released not one, but TWO clips from next week’s series premiere. The first clip features Liv meeting Clive, while the second features Liv chatting with another zombie.

In the series, “A med student-turned-zombie takes a job in the coroner’s office to gain access to the brains she must reluctantly eat to maintain her humanity, but with each brain she consumes, she inherits the corpse’s memories. With the help of her medical examiner boss and a police detective, she solves homicide cases in order to quiet the disturbing voices in her head.”

Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. first revealed its unique third-person, turn-based strategy, alternate history, comic book style (whoah) all the way back at E3 in 2014, and today you can finally get your hands on it. It’s going to sell a lot of copies based on the fact that it’s Intelligent Systems first strategy game since 2012’s acclaimed Fire Emblem: Awakening, and as a brand-new IP, the game definitely stands out as a quality release, albeit with a few major annoyances.

The game is all about Abraham Lincoln (yep, that Abe Lincoln), who brings together heroes from classic literature and American folklore to fend off an alien invasion. The S.T.E.A.M. in the title seemingly has many meanings, but it actually stands for Strike Team Eliminating the Alien Menace. Steam is also the technology that our heroes will use to defeat the aliens; steam boilers strapped to their backs give them super-human abilities. All of the weapons are steam-powered, of course, and all of the characters and the world itself have a decidedly steampunk styling. Yep, that’s a lot of steam.

The first thing that you’re likely to notice about the title (aside from, yep, all of the steam) is its gorgeous comic-book art style. The game actually opens with a kid (who owns a damned Marth Amiibo, which is sitting on his desk taunting you) diving into a Code Name S.T.E.A.M. comic book, and from time to time you’ll actually see cutscenes flipping between panels, sound effects will pop up the relevant onomatopoeia, you’ll see comic style voice bubbles all over the place, and of course the game’s cel shading makes it look as though the characters are popping right off of a wonderful 3D page (for the most part). From each cutscene, to running around the game’s many, many maps, presentation in Code Name S.T.E.A.M. is stellar.

Now, those wonderful visuals would be nothing without great sound to go with it, and Code Name S.T.E.A.M. delivers here too. Sound effects are high quality and varied, and the game’s commendable score is definitely headphone worthy. The game also features more voice acting than I’ve ever heard in a 3DS game, and it’s well acted on all counts, and with the limited storage space of the 3DS cartridges, I really have no idea how Intelligent Systems could possibly have fit it all in there, but I’m really, really glad that they did. Seriously, the audio is an absolute treat.

With the game’s outstanding presentation, and the history of Intelligent Systems, Code Name S.T.E.A.M. must kill in the gameplay department as well, right? At first glance, it looks like a third-person shooter, and rather than simply selecting which square you want your characters to move to as in most strategy titles, you can actually move your characters around in real time. Basically, each unit has a certain number of ‘steam’ that they can spend each turn. Moving, attacking, activating special abilities, etc. all use different amounts of steam, but certain actions, moving included, aren’t finalized until you shoot or activate an enemies Overwatch attack. This allows you to really play around with different strategies and visualize multiple vantage points before deciding on what to do each turn, and it’s a welcome and intuitive addition to traditional strategy mechanics. Throughout the game, you’ll unlock different team members, abilities, and equipment, which let you really customize your team, and thus have vastly different experiences.

The Overwatch ability is another mechanic that keeps Code Name S.T.E.A.M. feeling fresh. Both players (well, most characters) and many enemies have access to the ability, and its existence makes you really think about every action you could possibly take. Basically, if you end your turn with a certain level of steam left over, your character can automatically attack an enemy should an enemy come into range. It’s risky, of course, as that steam can always be utilized during your turn, and there’s no guarantee that saving it will lead to an attack, but when utilized correctly, Overwatch can be the difference between winning a map, and having to go back to the previous checkpoint. Enemies may also take advantage of Overwatch, which can leads to one of the biggest issues and strangest oversights in Code Name: S.T.E.A.M.

3DS_CodenameSTEAM_scrn03_E3

Aside from some lacklustre multiplayer, which is worth mentioning about as much as it’s worth playing, there are two big, glaring issues with the game. The first is one that I didn’t know could even be an problem in a strategy title: the lack of an overhead view. Your only viewpoints are those of your character’s, which amount to a tight third-person view that can make it impossible to see beyond obstacles. This means that you’re often moving blindly around obstacles and activating more enemy Overwatch attacks than I can even count. As I mentioned above, you can typically keep moving, figuring out the most efficient turn before locking it in, but being noticed by an enemy or activating their Overwatch makes your actions up to that point permanent. With no overhead view, and no map whatsoever, you’re getting hit, and you’re getting hit often, because you simply can’t see your enemies. It can happen pretty constantly, leading to a lot of replayed levels, and a lot of swearing at your 3DS.

Next up. In a game like this, your team is typically outnumbered. In most strategy titles that I’ve played, when it’s an enemy’s turn, you’ll see those turns played out at high speed. In Code Name S.T.E.A.M. you… stare at your characters while what amounts to a ‘loading’ bar fills across your screen. What. The. Heck. Sure, you can move the camera around your character, but why the heck would I want to do that? Unless you’re near an enemy and can actually see them moving (or you’re getting attacked), the enemy turns essentially amount to a loading screen to get to your next turn. Did I mention that this takes forever? This is an Intelligent Systems game, and a Nintendo published title, and in all my years of gaming, I can’t recall ever seeing such a polished game with a mechanic like this. It’s definitely not a means to pad out a short experience, as Code Name S.T.E.A.M. offers hours upon hours of gameplay, but I definitely find myself playing the title less knowing that more than half of the experience will be me waiting for my next turn.

3DS_CodenameSTEAM_scrn01_E3

Code Name S.T.E.A.M. is jammed pack with awesome content (including Fire Emblem Amiibo functionality that I wasn’t willing to open my NIB Amiibo for), and features some of the best presentation I’ve seen in a 3DS title. From its voice acting, to its gorgeous cel shaded art style and beyond, the game is a treat for the senses. Unfortunately, a few major questionable design choices ground Code Name S.T.E.A.M. as just a ‘very good’ 3DS title, instead of another gem from Intelligent Systems and Nintendo.

Code Name S.T.E.A.M. scores a steam-powered 3.5/5.

tl;dr:

+Top-notch presentation.

+Unique mechanics make the turn-based gameplay feel fresh.

+A ton of varied content.

-No overhead view means you’re staring at your characters through enemy turns.

-Enemy turns happen in real time. Meaning that you’re kept waiting… and waiting for your next turn.
