Briefly: Eric Francisco is sqee-ing with excitement right now.

We were all pretty upset back in May when NBC revealed that they would definitely, for sure, not be renewing the celebrated (yet somehow unpopular) series for a second season. Then, there were heavy rumours that the series would transition to another network, but eventually, contracts expired and the final nail was in the coffin.

Except for Matt Ryan’s Constantine, apparently. In May, it was revealed that Matt would guest star on an episode of Arrow this season. That episode is next week, and the first trailer for the episode has just appeared online.

Take a look at the trailer below, and be sure to let us know just how much you’d love Constantine to come back for good!

Briefly: Wow.

Nintendo revealed some pretty decent earnings at today’s investor’s meeting, and one of the biggest surprises (well, not really) was the incredible amount of Amiibo figures that the company has sold to date.

Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima announced during the meeting that Amiibo sales have surpassed 21 million units worldwide.

21. Million. Units. Whoah. Keep in mind that the Amiibo line as a whole launched just 11 months ago.

It was revealed back in May that the company had sold over 10.5 million figures, so clearly Nintendo’s intense focus on fixing the constant supply chain issues that Amiibo suffered for many months after launch has worked absolute wonders on sales numbers.

It’s insanely impressive.

How many Amiibo figures do you own? Somehow, I ended up with every single figure released thus far less the just-launched Yarn Yoshi’s. And I can’t wait to buy more.

Briefly: While we’re still disappointed that we won’t be playing Square-Enix’s upcoming Hitman (it was delayed until next year, remember?), it certainly looks as though that game is coming together very nicely.

At this week’s Paris Games Week, the publisher debuted a new trailer for the anticipated title, offering a gorgeous look at the antics we’ll finally be taking part in when the game launches next March.

Hitman is Io-Interactive’s newest chapter in the acclaimed blockbuster series of creative stealth action games. Enter a live and ever-expanding world of assassination, a digital experience that will continue to grow, deepen and evolve over time, where players perform contract hits on powerful, high profile targets in exotic locations around the world. From the highly fashionable Paris and sunny coast of Italy to the dust and hustle of the markets of Marrakesh and beyond, you have complete freedom of approach – where to go, when to strike and who to kill… is all up to you.

The sixth game in the core franchise, Io-Interactive has previously said not to think of the game as a reboot but as a pure “Hitman” experience and the foundation for future Hitman games. As an operative of the International Contract Agency, Agent 47’s job is to take out high-profile targets all over the world, supported by his long-time handler Diana Burnwood. Each location in the game is a living sandbox, a place where every NPC has a name and every room matters. Creativity from players is fully expected, you have the power and intelligence of Agent 47 at your fingertips and it is your choice whether to use brute force or orchestrate a genuine masterpiece of assassination.

Take a look at the trailer below, and let us know what you think!

Briefly: It was just a few days ago that Starz released the first four minutes of its upcoming Ash vs. Evil Dead online, and while the actual series won’t premiere until this Saturday, October 31st, the network has just renewed the series for a second season.

Of course, “executive producers and The Evil Dead original filmmakers Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert and Bruce Campbell will return for the second season with executive producer and showrunner Craig DiGregorio. Campbell will continue in his role as Ash Williams, the aging lothario and chainsaw-handed monster hunter. Lucy Lawless (“Salem,” “Spartacus”) is also returning as Ruby, a mysterious figure who believes Ash is the cause of the Evil outbreaks.”

“One season isn’t enough to satisfy the fans’ two decade-long appetite for more Ash,” said Carmi Zlotnik, Managing Director of Starz. “The early fan and press support, along with the international broadcaster demand for more story have made it clear that the adventures of Ash Williams can’t end with season one.”

As Starz notes: “the 10-episode first season of the half-hour series features Bruce Campbell (Evil Dead, “Burn Notice”) as Ash Williams;  Lucy Lawless (“Salem,” “Spartacus”) as Ruby a mysterious figure who believes Ash is the cause of the Evil outbreaks; Ray Santiago (“Touch,” Meet the Fockers) as Pablo Simon Bolivar, an idealistic immigrant who becomes Ash’s loyal sidekick; Dana DeLorenzo (A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas) as Kelly Maxwell, a moody wild child trying to outrun her past; and Jill Marie Jones (“Sleepy Hollow”) as Amanda Fisher, a disgraced Michigan State Trooper set to find our anti-hero Ash and prove his responsibility in the grisly murder of her partner.”

Anyone else beyond excited for the series? Yeah, me too. And I’m happy as hell that we’ll be seeing more than 10 episodes total.

No details on a release window for season two have been revealed, but I’d say that next Halloween is a pretty good guess. Re-watch the trailer for the series below, and let us know if you’re looking forward to this Saturday’s premiere!

Briefly: I am so happy to see the Hess’s back in action.

I know that a lot of folks thought that Jared and Jerusha went off the deep end with 2009’s fabulous and super weird Gentlemen Broncos. Those folks, however, are dead wrong. Saying that the Hess’s went off the deep end implies that they weren’t there to begin with, and the fact that they embrace the completely absurd projects that the create have lead to some of the most heartfelt, quirky, and quotable comedies of our generation.

I also really miss the Napoleon Dynamite cartoon. Anyone else with me on that one?

In any case, the first trailer for the Jared Hess directed, Jared & Jerusha written Don Verdean has just hit the web, and if you’ve seen a single one of the Hess’s previous films, you know exactly what you’re getting into.

It’s weird as hell, and it looks insanely hilarious.

This time around, we’ll join Sam Rockwell, Amy Ryan, Jemaine Clement, Leslie Bibb, Will Forte and Danny McBride as they uncover the world’s most sacred relics. “Hired by an ambitious small-town pastor to find sacred relics in the Holy Land, a self-proclaimed Biblical archaeologist comes up short and his attempt to cover up his failure fuels a comic conspiracy from the filmmaking team behind Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre.” Yep. Hilarious.

Take a look at the first trailer for Don Verdean below, and let us know what you think! Are a you a fan of the Hess’s previous projects? Sound out below!

Don Verdean hits theatres and On Demand December 11th!

I am absolutely in love with this idea.

When the original Ghostbuster hit theatres back in 1984, I was still a good six years from even being born, and it would be a number of years following that before I was ready for my first movie. I can’t be certain, but I’m pretty sure I would have started with some baby crap rather that gems like Ghostbusters and its 1989 sequel.

Thus, I’ve spent my entire life watching people of all ages, races, genders, and nationalities, build proton packs, ECTO-1’s, and celebrate a phenomenon that I’m too young to remember the birth of.

Now, I completely adore Ghostbusters (and you can bet your ass that I’m looking forward to next year’s reboot), but I’ve always wondered just why Ghostbusters garnered and maintained such an incredible influence on our culture. Hell, our own Eric Francisco just donned a Ghostbusters jumpsuit at New York Comic-Con, and at last weekend’s Halloween parade in Vancouver (yes, for some reason we have a parade for Halloween), a Ghostbusters group costume (including an inflated Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, was probably the most impressive aspect of the entire morning.

Thats’s why I’m beyond excited for Ghostheads, which is coming from director Brenden Maertens and producer Tommy Avallone (who directed the fantastic documentary I Am Santa Claus).

Basically, “Ghostheads are hardcore Ghostbusters Fans; the nickname was born in the mid 1980s after the huge growth of Ghostbusters fan base around the world. Ghostheads are just a collection of friends and acquaintance that decide to get together a couple of times a year, dress up in their Ghostbusters gear to either entertain people, attend conventions, screenings and even do charity work as well. Ghostheads are very much intuitive, as they re-build all of their very own Ghostbuster props from scratch, using only screen shots from the films as reference points.”

Sounds pretty awesome, doesn’t it? How the heck do I joint?

Brendan and Tommy are currently following around Ghostheads; those amazing folks who dress like Ghostbusters, build proton packs, and drive around in ECTO-1s. The documentary also, of course, celebrates the cultural impact that the movie has had on the public for the last 31 years. Damn, that’s a long time. The film is also set to be narrated by Slimer voice actress Robin Shelby, and interviews are lined up with original cast and crew members of both films!

Want to see it? Fantastic! The film is already being worked on, but Brendan, Tommy, and the rest of the crew are going to need your help if Ghostheads is ever set to see the light of day.

Yesterday, the team launched a flexible-funding Indiegogo campaign in order to raise funds for the film. Ghostheads has a modest goal of just $30,000, and its already getting a running start with more than $2500 raised in less than a day!

As always, backers get a lot more than a documentary out of the deal. Backer rewards include copies of the film, Zack Ryder signed Peter Venkman Funko Pop! Figures, T-shirts, producer credits, birthday parties (yep), and more! There are certainly some fantastic rewards here that Ghostbusters fans should be jumping on.

Now, it’s all up to you! You can learn more about the film via the Indiegogo campaign video below, and head here to back the project! Be sure to let us know which rewards you’ll be looking for. Can’t back it yourself? I’m pretty sure that you know someone who loves Ghostbusters, and would absolutely want to be a part of this!

Briefly: Well, it looks like I’ll need to get myself a Playstation VR.

The headset looks well designed, but up until this point I hadn’t really seen a compelling reason to actually want one (especially over the sure-to-have-more-support-but-also-need-a-powerful-PC Oculus headset). Sure, it could (and might) turn out like another EyeToy or Playstation Move, but with the huge surge of VR in the industry, I hope that Playstation VR has the staying power to actually be worth its price of admission.

If you’re a regular around these parts, you’ll know just how excited I was for this Summer’s Until Dawn, and just how much fun I had with the title once it was finally released (read my review here).

I fell in love with the characters (except Emily), fell in love with the world, and was beyond eager for more as soon as the credits began to roll.

At the ongoing Paris Games Week, Sony officially unveiled the recently rumoured Until Dawn: Rush of Blood, exclusively for its upcoming VR platform.

President of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida stated that “The thrill of the ride won’t just come from the track ahead, but from a terrifying world that is out to get you.”

Take a look at the trailer below, and let us know if you’re into this one!

Briefly: We finally know just when we’ll finally be able to play the holy-crap inducing No Man’s Sky, and it’s still quite a ways away.

Being that the game is likely to take eons to actually complete (well, if completing it is even possible), I’m actually kind of glad that the just-announced release window is pretty far out. It’ll give me a chance to almost finish Fallout 4 (and not make a dent on a single other game in my backlog)

Paris Games Week is now in full swing, and today Hello Games and Sony debuted a brand new, breathtaking look at the still-mysterious game, and also revealed that it will launch in June of 2016.

It would be pretty hard not to be blown away with everything that we’ve seen so far. Somehow, every look at the title has looked substantially different from the last, and it’s simply crazy to imagine what’s in store for us when we finally begin to explore.

The big question, is whether or not that insane ambitiousness will result in a fun-to-play game. We sure hope so! In any case, take a look at the new trailer below, and be sure to let us know if you’re looking forward to No Man’s Sky!

Briefly: Anyone feel like the marketing for next year’s too-short ‘The X-Files’ run has been pretty phenomenal so far?

Yeah, me too. From the first teasers, to the full trailer, stylish posters, and beyond, Fox knows that they have a hit on their hands (and a good one, based on the impressions that we heard from NYCC), and are doing all that they can to drum up excitement from fans of the original series.

That trend continues with the latest teaser for the upcoming season. I almost feel, however, that at the current rate that Fox is promoting new footage for the upcoming six episodes, there isn’t going to be any new footage to see come January’s premiere!

Thirteen years after the original series run, the next mind-bending chapter of THE X-FILES will be a thrilling, six-episode event series helmed by creator/executive producer Chris Carter, with stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson re-inhabiting their roles as iconic FBI Agents FOX MULDER and DANA SCULLY. This marks the momentous return of the Emmy- and Golden Globe Award-winning pop culture phenomenon, which remains one of the longest-running sci-fi series in network television history. Production on THE X-FILES event series is set to begin in summer 2015.

THE X-FILES originally premiered in September 1993. Over the course of its nine-season run, the influential series went from breakout sci-fi favorite to massive global hit, and became one of the most successful television dramas of all time. The show, which earned 16 Emmy Awards, five Golden Globes and a Peabody Award, follows FBI special agents Scully (Anderson) and Mulder (Duchovny), as they investigate unexplained cases – “X-Files” – for which the only answers involve paranormal phenomena.

In any case, trust no one, take a look at the new trailer below, and let us know what you hope to see in the January 24th premiere!

Briefly: Well, that was quick, and definitely atypical of a Telltale title!

It’s only been a few weeks since the developer launched the first episode of the already-awesome Minecraft: Story Mode (check out our review of the first episode here).

Today marks the launch of the retail version of Minecraft: Story Mode for PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC, and to celebrate, the company has just launched the second episode.

Yep. No months of waiting, no vague and mysterious trailer. It’s called ‘Assembly Required’, and it’s available on all platforms (well aside from Wii U, which is still on the way) today!

“Premiering ‘Minecraft: Story Mode’ this month, we’ve been overjoyed by the reception from both the Minecraft community and fans of Telltale across the world diving into the all-ages adventure and making key decisions that will craft their own stories throughout the rest of the season,” said Kevin Bruner, CEO and Co-Founder of Telltale Games. “This week, we’re happy to offer the game on a special disc at retailers worldwide, including access to the thrilling second episode, ‘Assembly Required,’ which will feel like a completely different chapter for players depending on their paths taken in episode one.”

I love Bruner’s last sentence in that statement. Telltale games are sometimes criticized for having most of the important choices ultimately lead in the same direction, but with the vast, open, free world of Minecraft, it seems like things may be different this time around.

You can take a look at the trailer for ‘Assembly Required’ below, and be sure to let us know what you think! My thoughts on the episode will be up, well, as soon as I get a chance to play it!

I was born in 1990.

Thus, I was just 9 years old when the first Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater game took my Playstation, and my life, by storm in the Summer of 1999. I had wanted a skateboard for what felt like forever at that point, but 1) my mother was overprotective, and 2) honestly, I’m clumsy as hell (still, as an adult), and I more-than-likely would have hurt myself.

So, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater became MY game. It rarely left my Playstation, until the sequel came out, of course, which probably didn’t leave my Playstation until its sequel, and so on. I still think that, to this day, all these years later, I put more hours into Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 than any other game I’ve ever played, and that includes a myriad of RPGs, as well as a two year on-again-off-again relation ship with World of Warcraft.

So you can imagine my dismay when the series evolved into, well, utter shit.

Tony Hawk’s Underground brought an entirely new mechanic to the series: a plot, and its expansive levels and heavy customization brought the series to a new how-could-it-get-any-better high. Then, an excited, young Derek picked up Tony Hawk’s Underground 2, and while that younger version of me immensely appreciated the return of the classic campaign alongside the Underground career mode, I could barely recognize the Jackass-fueled, way too silly storyline. In this iteration, the game became less about skating, combos, gaps, and high-scores, and instead focussed more on how-can-we-fit-the-Jackass-crew-into-this-goal.

THPS5_SkatePark_Tony_Crouch_xavnql

After THUG2, and wanting to relive my gaming glory days, I tried the next couple of iterations before I essentially gave up completely. That was the last Tony Hawk title that I put any amount of time into until the release of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater HD in 2012, but after spending a few hours in that world, it was pretty clear that while the maps felt the same, everything else about the title felt different and unfamiliar.

Enter Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5. Rumours of another, actual Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater title surfaced with Tony doing press for the now-cancelled-but-surprisingly-polished-looking mobile, free-to-play endless runner Tony Hawk’s Shred Session. The game was hinted at for some time before Tony himself revealed it at Sony’s CES conference back in January.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5 is the first proper Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater title since 2007. It was marketed (obviously, with that 5 in the title), as a back-to-basics iteration for the series. Dropping the ridiculous storylines, off-board antics, and all of the other fluff (or fat, depending on who you speak to) that took the focus away from what mattered: the damned skating.

I was really, really excited for this latest iteration. As is pretty obvious from the above paragraphs, I’m I’ve been passionate about the series since childhood, and with the passion that Tony Hawk and the Robomodo team spoke about this title, I hoped (and believed all too wholeheartedly) that my favourite childhood game was coming back.

Now that I’ve spent a bunch of time with the title, it’s pretty clear that this is not the second coming I was hoping for. The game is honestly chock-full of noticable issues, but at the same time, I’m actually having more fun playing a THPS5 than I have any other game in the series in years.

Before I really jump into things, I’d like to note that according to Activision, they’re taking the myriad of issues that people are having with the game very seriously, to the point where they’ve actually delayed the release of the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game indefinitely, so that the entire team at Robomodo can work on fixing these issues. So hopefully, this current version of the game is the worst that the game will be, and will steadily improve from here on out. Hopefully.

Really, the first thing that you’re likely to notice about the THPS5 is its graphics. I’m the first one that’ll tell you that graphics are unimportant in the long run, and that of course, gameplay, atmosphere, and plot are far more important. That being said, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5 looks bad. The earliest, worst looking games released for the PS4 and Xbox One look far better than this game does in almost every aspect, and it’s pretty crazy that a full-priced title looks like it’s using assets from a game that came out mid last-gen. Even with its poor looks, nearly any time that you’re trying to complete an objective with numerous objects onscreen, you’re bound to be greeted by slowdown until those objects are removed. It really doesn’t make any sense for a game that looks like this to be so poorly optimized. The one silver lining here is that I actually do like the character models this time around. The skaters utilize a stylish cel-shaded look, meaning that their appearances are simpler than you might expect, but they also look decidedly more modern than the rest of the game. There’s really not much more to say about the title’s appearance. It looks bad, it slows down all too much, and aside from the pastel-looking, semi-colourful skaters, the colours are as dull as Fallout‘s wasteland. I’m not overly sure just how much these new skaters represent their real life counterparts, however, as I’ve been out of the skating scene for a number of years. I was pretty confused to see Lil’ Jon available as a playable skater for instance, but I stuck with my man Tony, so I didn’t care enough to look up just why he was there. There’s also a fairly robust create-a-skater mode, so you should be able to Frankenstein up almost whoever you like.

Sound fares a lot better (at least in some regards). I’m not sure what the last couple of iterations have featured (as my time with each of them was brief and forgettable), but in THPS5, gone are the Ska-heavy, I-still-have-them-on-my-phone-today tunes of the earlier games. Those titles featured high-energy tracks that somehow made you want to skate faster, jump higher, and try that one last trick even though you know you’ll probably bail and have your huge combo ruined. The soundtrack here, much to Shane O’Hare’s disagreement, elicits none of those feelings. It’s music, and it’s fine, but I can’t imagine more than a handful of players wanting to listen to these tracks outside of playtime, which is a far cry from those earlier games that I can’t…stop…talking…about (sorry).

Aside from the music, the sound is all pretty appropriate. Grinds sound like grinds, bails sound like bails, the sounds of your wheels rolling accross the pavement give you a far better sense of speed than the framerate often does, and so on!

Level design is on the same level (yep) as the game’s soundtrack. Sure, it’s there, and they are definitely playable stages. You can certainly jump, flip, grab, grind, and not get off your board (just like it should be), but most of the game’s 8 stages feel uninspired at best (aside from the re-mixes of classic levels). Aside from the rare, actually excellent gap, objects on the map can sometimes feel as though they’ve been placed randomly, and are definitely not conducive to big combos or smooth navigation. They feel just a few steps up from what’s possible in the Create-A-Park mode, which is a sad testament to the overall design of the game.

The absolute worst aspect of the game? Worse than the terrible graphics, bad level design, or every bug in the game combined? There’s no freaking split screen multiplayer. I don’t know who’s decision this was, but to remove the absolute, most memorable aspect of every Tony Hawk game ever is complete blasphemy. Nope, you can’t do score runs, play H-O-R-S-E, or any other mode if you have friends over. You want to know some of my greatest memories growing up? Some cool trip? No. Good grades? Hell no.  First concert? Nope. First kiss? Well, yeah. But also, it was playing any Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater game, competitively, on the same couch as my friends. You just cannot get the same sense of competition, or struggle, or fun, or anything, if you’re not sitting right beside someone. Not having local multiplayer is understandable in a lot of games, as a console’s resources are taken up by running one instance of the game, let alone two, but THPS5 is not one of those games, and not having local multiplayer is possibly the worst misstep in the franchise. F***.

Online only, I'm afraid.
Online only, I’m afraid.

Alright, that’s a lot of complaining in just a few short paragraphs, so let’s get to some positives: the actual gameplay. The movement, the physics, and general skating all feel closer to Tony Hawk’s glory (Neversoft) days than they have in years. Honestly, after reading a myriad of first impressions articles and early reviews in the first days of the game’s release, I expected Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5, a title that I’d been excited for since its announcement, to be even worse than previous iterations. My expectations at that point went from hopeful to heartbroken, and I expected to pick up a controller and have to force myself through the worst game this side of Silent Hill: Homecoming (another beloved series of mine that has been reduced to an unrecognizable state from its original glory). When I was finally able to pick up a controller, something completely unexpected happened: I had a lot of fun.

Yep. I felt nostalgic as hell playing this game, which hasn’t happened with a title in this series for as long as I can remember. Trying to surpass Sick scores (and trying to surpass them in one combo), along with grabbing (too easy) Secret Tapes and DVD’s, collecting SKATE and COMBO, and all the old, classic goals felt fantastic, despite THPS5‘s poor level design. Sometimes, I had so much fun trying to complete an objective or keep a combo going that I actually utilized the PS4’s built-in recording feature, which is the first time in nearly three years of owning a PS4 that I’ve even felt like touching that funtionality. It made me really miss the absolutely incredible replay functionality of EA’s unfortunately defunct Skate series, as the expanded, cinematic functionality of that replay mode would have had me trying to complete certain gaps or making cerain moves for far longer than I did. I even had some fun with the game’s new, somewhat silly objectives, like ‘pop all the baloons in the pool in a certain amount of time’, although things got pretty repetitive once I realized that many of these goals (or slight variations of them) are featured in each stage.

THPS5 also introduces a new mechanic that’s tough to get used to, but actually really cool. Basically, pressing the Grind button while midair will elicit a ‘Slam’. This means that no matter where you are; whether you’re flying over a ramp that you’d wanted to hit, inadvertantly jumping over a rail you’d wanted to grind, and so on, simply hitting that Grind button will send you quickly towards the ground and (hopefully) onto your missed target. Again, it takes some time to get used to, especially as it’s mapped to the Grind button, but once you mess it up fourty or fifty times, you should have a pretty good idea of how to use the Slam to your advantage!

There are bugs (a lot of bugs), mostly from what I’ve seen so far with the game’s always on multiplayer. You’ll see up to 20 other skaters hopping around each level, and the idea around it was a more connected, social skating experience, which actually sounds pretty awesome. Unfortunately, I’m often getting hit (or hitting) skaters that I can’t see, or the online player’s animations look like something out of <insert poorly animated movie here>. You’re also consistenly greeted by a giant announcement that takes up far too much of the screen whenever a player enters or leaves the level, and with up to 20 players on each map, I feel as though these messages are onscreen more often than not. In a quick-moving game that requires focus and perfect timing, having constantly changing messages onscreen (and taking up again, far too much screen space), can really distract you, and has messed up more than a few awesome runs in my lengthy playtime. Aside from that, I haven’t fallen through a stage, gotten stuck in a corner, jumped off anything that wasn’t there, or really witnessed any of the other issues that many other outlets are reporting plague the title.

Really, the biggest thing that’s plaguing the title is that sticky, uninspired feeling that I’ve been mentioning throughout this review. That beings said, uninspired does not equal un-fun.

Is the game worth its currently full-priced admission? In its current state, probably not, but that’s all relative to just how desperate you are for a new action-sports game. Stages are fairly limited at 8, but the large amount of goals available for each (and the legitimately challenging Pro goals unlocked afterwards), should keep you busy for quite some time. Activision, as a likely apology for early adopters of the title, has announced that two additional stages, and five additional skaters, will be coming to the game at no extra charge at some point in the future. I’m sure that at one point this was intended to be paid DLC, but the fact that every player will get it at no cost is surely a nice ‘sorry you had to play with bugs’ gesture.

You know how sometimes you’ll watch something on Netflix (or even pay for it at a theatre), something that you know is bad (and the ratings reflect it), and then you end up enjoying the hell out of it anyways? You probably don’t tell anyone that you enjoyed it since they’re bound to make fun of you and tell all of your other friends and… well you get my point. That’s kinda how I feel about Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5. I don’t know what shade of rose the older games have put over my glasses, but I’m certainly not seeing (or playing) the steaming pile of code that I’ve read accross the rest of the internet. It’s unpolished, it’s uninspired, but I’m having fun, and for some reason, I can’t wait to play more. Though again, I wish I could have some fun with my friends (locally).

Then again, I wish a lot of things about Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5, but all said and done, I am glad that it exists.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5 scores a playable 2.5/5.

Briefly: Damn.

Regular folk will read this project’s creator as as Anthony Toretto, but long time Geekscapists know him better as Sandstone. He’s been with us for as long as we can remember, and we really, really love him.

Some time ago, Anthony decided that he wanted to start making some impressive-as-hell short films. First, he brought us Christmassacre, “a short film about Jesus and Santa teaming up to rid the world of lowlife criminals and crooked cops.” It’s pretty incredible that such an off-the-wall idea could turn into something so bad-ass, especially from basically a first timer. Watch Christmassacre embedded below, and be sure to head to Neon Underground’s YouTube channel before heading below for their latest offering.

Neon Underground just debuted a brand new horror short called I Saw You. It’s a beautifully shot, and creepy as hell take on guy named Jake who takes a photo that he shouldn’t, and what comes afterwards.

Take a look below, and let us know what you think!

Briefly: Just a few more days to go, baby!

Ahead of its anticipated (understatement?) Saturday premiere, Starz has just unleased the first four minutes of its long-awaited series Ash vs. Evil Dead.

It looks, as we’ve known for a long time now, absolutely incredible.

I don’t want to give anything away, but these opening moments sure give us a sense of tone for the series, and it’s exactly the tone a fan would hope for. It’s pretty clear that this aging, unfit mess is not the Ash that we once knew, and that should make things interesting as hell once the shit hits the fan.

Take a look at the clip below, and let us know what you think! Ash vs. Evil Dead premieres on Saturday, October 31st!

Briefly: Back at San Diego Comic-Con, Ubisoft offered fans the amazing opporuntity to run an obstacle course based on the now-just-released Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate (watch last year’s Assassin’s Creed: Unity run here).

The parkour-styled (for babies like us of course) obstacle course was designed to let attendees experience some of the moves from the Assassin’s Creed series, without having to find their own Animus and become an actual assassin.

The whole thing was extremely safe, aside from the one lady who didn’t listen to instructions and broke her leg right before it was Shane’s turn to run.

As you can see in the video below, the actual obstacle course itself wasn’t too hard (except for the ropes, which are a lot harder than they look). Participants could request to compete for top time of the day to win some cool prizes, and of course, bragging rights for this once-in-a-lifetime event.

You can take a look at Shane’s run below, watch the Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate launch trailer here, and let us know what you think!

Briefly: As much of a mess as last year’s Assassin’s Creed: Unity turned out to be, the just-released trailer for Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate… actually looks pretty cool.

I mean, none of the characters look to be losing their faces, or falling through the city, or <insert bug here>, so that’s already a marked improvement over last year’s game.

Plus, a London setting? Way cooler than last year.

In any case, you can take a look at the bloody launch trailer below, and let us know if you plan to give this year’s Assassin’s Creed a chance? Me? I’ve got about 100 games in my backlog right now, but I’m definitely itching for some of that parkour action.

You can also take a look at the ‘Gangs 101’ video below, in which director Scott Phillips takes us through the new gang and influence system in Syndicate.

Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate hits Xbox One, PS4, and PC tomorrow!

Briefly: Nobody would suspect it, but I love Octodad. I even had an opportunity to interview developer Young Horses Inc. before the game released, which you can read right here.

It’s probably one of the funniest games that I’ve ever played, and it still seems as though very few people that I mention it to have even heard of it. That’s crazy.

Oh, you’re one of those people that hasn’t heard of it? Check out the hilarious trailer, and tell me that it doesn’t look unique as hell.

https://youtu.be/oOpJiPISO3k

Yep. It’s about a Dad and husband, who is also a secret octopus. Nobody knows it, and it’s your job to keep it that way.

Young Horses has revealed that the game is finally slated to hit the Wii U in North America and Europe on October 29th, 2015. The game will be available for 20% off from October 29th-November 5th since you “awesome fans have been so patient”, meaning it’ll net you just $11/€11/£10.

The Wii U version of the game includes off-screen play, 4-Player co-op, and more, and I really can’t wait to play through this game again.

Planning to pick it up? Let us know in the comments below!

Briefly: This is pretty exciting. Well, really it’s sad that it’s even necessary.

Activision announced this morning that it has delayed the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5 in order to focus on fixing the many issues found within the current-gen version.

The game launched late last month to mostly scathing reviews. If you’re a Geekscape Games listener, you’ve probably hear me talk about it extensively over the past couple of episodes. I haven’t actually made the time to write my written review of the title yet… because I’m still too busy having fun with it.

Yep, I’m having fun with it. The levels feel uninspired, and it has a lot of technical issues, but Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5 is the most ‘THPS’ feeling Tony Hawk title that I’ve played in years. And I’ve played a lot of Tony Hawk. Look for that full review soon if you’re an old fan who’s still on the fence about the game.

Speaking with EuroGamer, an Activision representative noted that “We are working closely with our developers to address the issues identified by our community. Our development resources are fully focused on fixes and content updates for PS4 and Xbox One, so we have decided to delay the release of THPS5 on PS3 and X360. We will update the community when we have more specific information about a release date for PS3 and Xbox 360.”

I’m really, really glad they’re working to fix this. There was a lot of rampant speculation about THPS5 simply being a quick ‘cash in’, as Activision’s Tony Hawk license expires at the end of the year. With the fairly quick reveal and release with little marketing of the unpolished title certainly made this speculation believable.

Again, it’s ridiculous that this is even necessary, but I just really like Tony Hawk titles.

In any case, no new release date has been revealed for the last generation version of the title, but I’d guess we won’t see it until next year.

Have you played Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5? Do you agree with the reviews that you’ve seen thus far?

Briefly: November is going to be a great month.

First, Bethesda’s Fallout 4 is set to launch on the 10th, and will feature so many hours of amazing story and gameplay that I’m probably never going to finish it (it’ll be The Witcher 3 all over again), and then just ten days later, the first season of Marvel / Netflix’ Jessica Jones will hit the streaming service, and for about 12 hours, all will be right with the world.

Then the wait for Daredevil‘s second season really begins.

Today, Netflix debuted the stunning key art for the series, and it’s absolutely something that I would love to have on my wall. Check it out below in motion format!

Oh, and the full finally-not-a-teaser trailer? It’s coming this Friday!

Looking forward to Jessica Jones? Let us know!

Taking place after a tragic ending to her short-lived super hero stint, the new series follows Jessica Jones as she rebuilds her personal life and career as a detective who gets pulled into cases involving people with extraordinary abilities in New York City.

Briefly: It’s been quite some time since we’ve been blessed with a new episode of Telltale’s Game of Thrones, but today, just one day after the epic conclusion to its acclaimed Tales From The Borderlands, and a week after launching the first episode of Minecraft: Story Mode (read our review here), the company has revealed that the celebrated first season of its intense Game Of Thrones adaptation is set to conclude in just a few weeks.

The final episode, ‘The Ice Dragon’ will release on consoles, mobile, and PC, worldwide, on November 17th. This universal release marks a first for a Telltale title, so hopefully that’s a trend that continues. I’d love to play these games on my mobile devices

“The epic conclusion to the season is the most ambitious and diversely presented episode we’ve ever produced,” said Kevin Bruner, CEO and Co-Founder of Telltale Games. “The fate of House Forrester has been in the hands of players all season long, and the finale will be tailored to provide a uniquely harrowing conclusion for each and every player based on the decisions they’ve made in the game thus far.”

If you haven’t played the series yet, Telltale’s Game of Thrones is particularly interesting as it’s “played from five different points of view. Each is either a direct Forrester family member, or a person in service to the House. Scattered across Westeros and Essos, each will play their part in seeking to save House Forrester from destruction.”

In case you’re unsure of the series, or have just missed out thus far, the first episode of the season, ‘Iron From Ice’ has also gone free on PS3, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox 360, iOS, and Android devices.

You can take a look at a newly-released video, highlighting all of the amazing voice talent in the game below! Let us know what you think, and what you hope to see in the finale!

Briefly: Creed looks awesome. That was pretty clear from the very first trailer.

Today, Warner Bros. debuted a brand new featurette that takes us inside the film, and also highlights just how freaking emotional it is.

Michael B. Jordan looks looks to have a pretty unbelievable performance as Adonis Johnson, and (based on the marketing) it looks like this one may be quality enough to make us forget that he was in Fantastic Four (eh, maybe not).

Not sure what Creed’s about? here’s the heavy synopsis.

Adonis Johnson (Jordan) never knew his famous father, world heavyweight champion Apollo Creed, who died before he was born.  Still, there’s no denying that boxing is in his blood, so Adonis heads to Philadelphia, the site of Apollo Creed’s legendary match with a tough upstart named Rocky Balboa.

Once in the City of Brotherly Love, Adonis tracks Rocky (Stallone) down and asks him to be his trainer.  Despite his insistence that he is out of the fight game for good, Rocky sees in Adonis the strength and determination he had known in Apollo—the fierce rival who became his closest friend.  Agreeing to take him on, Rocky trains the young fighter, even as the former champ is battling an opponent more deadly than any he faced in the ring.

With Rocky in his corner, it isn’t long before Adonis gets his own shot at the title…but can he develop not only the drive but also the heart of a true fighter, in time to get into the ring?

Take a look at the featurette below, and let us know if you’re looking forward to Creed! Creed his theatres on November 25th!

Briefly: Is it January yet?

Marketing for the upcoming six-episode revival of The X-Files has been pretty stellar thus far. From the first teasers, to the full trailer, stylish posters, and beyond, Fox knows that they have a hit on their hands (and a good one, based on the impressions that we heard from NYCC), and are doing all that they can to drum up excitement from fans of the original series.

Well, Fox just released a new poster, and it’s definitely doing some fan service. It’s doing a pretty damned good job of it, too. What? You thought that the Cigarette Smoking Man was dead? Looks like you were wrong.

Take a look at the new poster below (via TVLine), and let us know if you’re looking forward to the miniseries. The X-Files premieres this January!

Briefly: I’m still not really sure what Yo-Kai Watch is, but I do know that I want it, and I want it bad (which is terrifying, because I’m already addicted to enough stuff).

The series has been referenced as a Pokemon-sized hit in Japan (selling over eight million copies), and it’s pretty clear that Nintendo is hoping for the same success when Yo-Kai Watch hits North America on November 6th.

The big N today revealed a brand new, small-child-friendly 2DS bundle for the game. The bundle includes the game as a pre-installed digital download, and it costs just $99 ($129 CAD)!BundleYo-Kai Watch features hundreds of sometimes cute, sometimes spooky and usually mischievous Yo-kai that inhabit our world. Players must use their Yo-kai Watch to find Yo-kai, befriend them, and turn them into a team to battle other Yo-kai. More than 200 Yo-kai are hidden all around the world, and each Yo-kai has its own unique skills and characteristics.

The anime is already running (and popular) on Disney XD, and I really can’t wait to check out the unique looking, Level-5 developed title.

Take a look at the latest trailer for the game below, and let us know if you’ll be picking up Yo-Kai Watch on November 6th!

Briefly: It’s going to be hard not to call in sick for work tomorrow.

I’ve been pretty vocal about DONTNOD’s Life Is Strange being the best game that I’ve played so far in 2015. Now, after a slightly longer wait than usual, the final episode of the title is set to release tomorrow.

Square-Enix has just debuted a trailer for the upcoming probably-heartbreaking adventure, which you can take a look at below.

Me? I’m staying as far away from the video as possible. Life Is Strange is a rare series that has consistently kept me on my toes throughout every single episode. This being the last one, and likely the last time we’ll ever see Max Caulfield, I’d like to be as surprised as possible.

And I hope that she’s okay. The end of Episode Four earlier in the year basically ruined my Summer.

You can take a look at the trailer below, and be sure to let us know if you’ve enjoyed the game so far!

Briefly: With all of the Star Wars news (and rumours) this past weekend (that final trailer though), plus the overexertion from climbing Vancouver’s famous Grouse Grind (hear all about it on the latest episode of Geekscape, featuring, well, me), somehow this one slipped right passed me.

Which is unfortunate, because it’s incredible.

Yep, director Matt Reeves has shared the very first set photo from the now-in-production War For The Planet Of The Apes (which can’t come soon enough), and it will really, really give you that warm nostalgic feeling if you’re a fan of the original series.

Why, why did this have to be delayed?

In any case, take a look at the image below, and let us know if you’re excited for this third film. War For The Planet Of The Apes is slated to hit theatres on July 14th, 2017. We still don’t know a lot about the feature, but we’ll be sure to share more as soon as we do.

Briefly: While I actually quite enjoyed the first three titles in the Paranormal Activity franchise, the fourth chapter was absolutely abysmal. Luckily, Gregory Plotkin took over for last year’s spinoff, The Marked Ones, which resulted in an acceptable, creepy flick that took the series somewhere that it’s never been before: outside.

Now, after a myriad of date shifts, the next (and apparently final) chapter in the Paranormal Activity saga is set to hit theatres in just over a week. The film is supposed to answer the big questions that the series has been asking for years, and even reveal the mysterious Toby for the first time ever.

The end of The Marked Ones certainly did a good job preparing us for The Ghost Dimension, as it saw the main character somehow teleport into Katie and Micah’s home just moments before Micah was murdered. It’ll certainly be interesting to see what comes next, and how well the film will tie in with everything that’s happened so far (as the series is damn good at doing).

Another trailer for for Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension has just debuted online. Take a look below, and let us know if you’re looking forward to the series end!

Briefly: I sure hope that following this release Ratchet & Clank become again relevant enough to actually be featured in a good video game again (I don’t think that the remaster/re-imagining really counts, but we’ll see).

After a long, long silence, the full trailer for next year’s Ratchet & Clank film has just debuted online.

In the film, “Two unlikely heroes struggle to stop a vile alien named Chairman Drek from destroying every planet in the Solana Galaxy. Ratchet is the last of his kind, a foolhardy “lombax” who has grown up alone on a backwater planet with no family of his own. Clank is a pint-sized robot with more brains than brawn. When the two stumble upon a dangerous weapon capable of destroying entire planets, they must join forces with a team of colorful heroes called The Galactic Rangers in order to save the galaxy. Along the way, they will learn about heroism, friendship, and the importance of discovering one’s own identity.”

With a script from Kevin Munroe, Gerry Swallow, and Insomniac Senior Writer TJ Fixman, I’d wager that the film will retain the excellent feel and humour of the Playstation series. It’s pretty clearly represented in this trailer, which really brings me back to some of my early teenage years. Wow.

And I haven’t even mentioned the cast yet. Ratchet & Clank stars Paul Giamatti, John Goodman, Bella Thorne, Rosario Dawson, Jim Ward, James Arnold Taylor, David Kaye, Armin Shimerman, and Sylvester Stallone. Yep.

Take a look at the trailer below, and let us know what you think! Ratchet & Clank hits theatres on April 29th, 2016!

Briefly: Now this is a cool announcement.

Sure, it’s been rumoured for since the announcement of Legendary’s Kong: Skull Island that Godzilla and King Kong would (at some point) be appearing in the same film. Now it’s official, and we’re excited as hell.

What better way to join the creatures together than the MUTO-hunting organization, Monarch, that we first saw in 2014’s impressive Godzilla.

Today’s announcement also gave us a short timeline of the plans for this shared universe, which will see the previously announced Kong: Skull Island hit theatres on March 10th 2017, Godzilla 2 on June 8, 2018, and Godzilla vs. King Kong in 2020.

Legendary also reiterated that “Classic Toho monsters including King Ghidorah, Mothra, and Rodan, as announced at Comic-Con 2014, may also join the Legendary pantheon of giant monster mayhem going forward,” so there’s a good chance we could be seeing some of those classic creatures as well.

What could be next? A Legendary’s Agents of MONARCH TV series?

“Audiences really responded to Godzilla,” stated Legendary CEO Thomas Tull. “Today, I’m excited to reveal that film was only the beginning of an epic new entertainment universe. As a lifelong fan of these characters, I’ve always wanted to see the ultimate showdown, and today we’re pleased to be announcing that and more.”

“Working with our partners at Legendary, we enjoyed tremendous creative and commercial success with `Godzilla,’” added Warner Bros. CEO Tsujihara. “It’s great to be able to revisit these characters and help create a franchise with so many creative possibilities for filmmakers. Fans love these big, globally iconic films and it doesn’t get any bigger than this.”

So, which film in this new shared universe are you most excited for? Sound out below!

Briefly: They’ve already taken on StrengthPerceptionEnduranceCharisma, and Intelligence, and today Bethesda debuted part six of their fantastic and hilarious Do You Know What Makes You S.P.E.C.I.A.L. ad campaign for November’s release of Fallout 4.

This week’s S.P.E.C.I.A.L. video focuses on Agility. Study it carefully to ensure your survival and to discover what makes you S.P.E.C.I.A.L.!

Seriously, these videos have been an absolute blast thus far, and I really can’t wait to see the final video in the series (mostly because that means that Fallout 4 is SUPER close).

You can take a look at the Agility video below, and be sure to let us know how excited you are for the game! Fallout 4 hits PC, Xbox One, and PS4 on November 10th!

Briefly: Well this is damned cool.

The original Deus Ex is one of my favourite games of all time. It was one of the first games that I’d every played that truly made me feel as though the choices that I was making, and the stats that I was developing, made a difference to the overall game and the outcome of the story.

I’ve replayed the title a few times over the years, but being that Deus Ex is now a 15 year-old game, it’s getting so long in the tooth that it’s hard to pick up and play. It’s still amazing, but level design, graphics, and the audio just cannot hold up to anything even remotely contemporary.

Well, Square-Enix and Eidos have just revealed that they’ve authorized a fan-created mod for the game titled Deus Ex Revision, which aims to change the game at its core. According to the Steam page, “it also bundles in some of the best modifications that the fanbase has made over the years, including Direct3D 9 rendering, high-resolution textures, high-detail 3D models, and alternative gameplay modes.”

John French, Creative Director at Caustic Creative, said that “Where other projects fill in detail around the edges of the game by tuning gameplay mechanics or improving textures, we focus on the visceral core of the Deus Ex experience, bringing new level design, aesthetic direction and world-building detail.”

David Anfossi, Head of Studio at Eidos-Montreal adds that “One of the reasons that Deus Ex has been so popular for 15 years is the way in which the gaming community has embraced the ground-breaking gameplay and a narrative that looks to the future but is inspired by real-world events. Revision’ from Caustic Creative is a fantastic way for fans new and old to experience the original Deus Ex in a whole new way before Deus Ex: Mankind Divided® raises the bar once again.”

It’s a pretty cool idea, and it’s available right now, for free, for Steam owners of the game! Watch the trailer below, head here to give it a download, and let us know if you’re looking forward to Deus Ex: Mankind Divided!

Briefly: Take-Two Interactive’s comic book subsidiary, Double Take, may have just launched their Night of the Living Dead tie-in books back in September (yep, like one month ago), but that hasn’t stopped Lionsgate from announcing the adaptation of one of what may be the best book of the bunch, Z-Men.

“We’re delighted to expand our relationship with our friends at Take-Two by partnering with their comic book arm, Double Take, in bringing Z-Men to the big screen,” said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group Co-Chairs Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger. “We continue to diversify our portfolio with films adapted from novels, video games and board games and look forward to translating 2T’s graphic novel into a spine-chilling film for moviegoers and comic book fans alike. It is yet another example of the strong underlying intellectual property on which our film and television content is based.”

Here’s the synopsis of the cool-as-hell book, in case you’ve missed it thus far: “Dead and/or alive… LBJ orders the Secret Service to bring him back a zombie. It’s 1966 and the Oval Office is in an uproar; there’s been a spree of mass murders in Western Pennsylvania (and reports of the dead returning to life). President Lyndon B. Johnson assigns the head of the Secret Service to send agents into the field to investigate. Agents Stuart and Clancy are given the opportunity to serve their country and see if the zombie apocalypse has indeed begun.”

“We are pleased to expand our partnership with Lionsgate, who has the right team to bring to life on screen what Double Take brings to life in comics,” said Double Take General Manager Bill Jemas. “We look forward to seeing Lionsgate’s creativity transform the Z-Menstory into an exciting feature film, and everyone on the Double Take team is incredibly enthused at this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”

No further information about the project has been revealed at this time, but we’ll be sure to keep you informed as we find out more!
