Coming off the release of Mad Max: Fury RoadMad Max promises to bring the world we’re familiar with into a living and playable world. The game seems to blend Max’s tormented past and over-the-top action pretty well.

The game’s story is a stand-alone piece and will not tie into Fury RoadMad Max also has a tormented video game past of its own. You may remember the first announcement trailer that promised a game coming to last-gen consoles. Obviously that never happened, and the game has since been reworked into what we see above. Regardless, Avalanche Studios seems to have found their way to the game’s completion!

Mad Max is set to release September 1, 2015. 

Have you ever wanted to explore our galaxy with a 1:1 ratio in customizable ships with friends? Elite: Dangerous might be the game for you. Elite: Dangerous is a space epic MMO where you and your friends can travel the galaxy, collect minerals, buy ships, and start dogfights in the middle of an astroid field. Players make their own stories and are free to explore when and how they want.

The latest gameplay footage of Elite: Dangerous for Xbox One, the definitive massively multiplayer space epic. Starting with only a small starship and a few credits, players do whatever it takes to earn the skill, knowledge, wealth and power to survive in a futuristic cutthroat galaxy and to stand among the ranks of the iconic Elite.

The game is available now on Steam and the Xbox One. 

Halo Wars 2 is definitely one of those games that fans of the first always wanted, but not quite sure we’d get. It’s nice now that we have confirmation of the game’s existence. Worry will now be shifted to how the game will be handled. Shortly after the completion of Halo Wars, Ensemble Studios was dissolved. Certain Affinity and 343i will be handling Halo Wars 2 and the game’s story seems to be incorporating characters from the first game.

Fans will immediately recognize the name Douglas along with what appears to be the Spirit of Fire emblem on the side of the spartan’s armor. As well all know, Douglas went into cryo sleep, along with the rest of the Spirit of Fire crew that made it off the shield world. It will also be interesting to see how this game ties in with the Halo comics. Both are canon.

Halo Wars 2 is set to release next Fall. 

One of the many Xbox announcements this morning came in the form of a console announcement. We all knew it was coming, it was just a matter of when we’d see it.

If I’m being honest, I’m a little disappointed in the console. For years, I’ve been purchasing almost everything LE in the Halo franchise, but I’m finding that’s not the case anymore. The console might appeal to some fans, but it seems that everything Halo 5 seems to be focused on Spartan Locke, the new character introduced last year via Halo: Nightfall.

The LE Console is priced at $500 and includes a code for Halo 5‘s digital download. The console will also be available October 20th, seven days before Halo 5‘s October 27th release date.

Remember when it was consistantly implied that Rise of the Tomb Raider was going to be a true Xbox One exclusive and not timed? Well, according to a recent Square Enix press release, they confirmed that it’s exclusiveity will be temporary. For a year. And even less for PC.

What’s sure to be a blow to Microsoft’s big, black box, which has been banking on Lara’s next adventure as one of their few announced exclusives this holiday season, the next Tomb Raider adventure will be arriving in early 2016 for PC, with a PS4 release during the 2016 holiday.

While these dates are still vague, that takes away one more reason for PS4 owners to buy an Xbox, PC owners to jump to the console, or buyers who are on the fence as to which of the two competing systems they should buy. Adding to Capcom’s insistance that Street Fighter V will never come to Xbox One despite sales being stonger on the Xbox 360 for SFIV and the growing gap in sales numbers between Microsoft and Sony’s current consoles, and that leaves developers with even less incentive to support the Xbox exclusively.

Should the company be worried? Or should they finally just bring back your Mech Assault‘s and Crimson Skies‘ of the world and stop relying on third parties? Throughout all their successes with first and third party titles for the 360 and One, Microsoft has never been able to fully embrace indie gaming. Sure, they own and heavily support Minecraft, one of gaming’s most popular indie titles of all time, but can that still be classified as an indie game; knowing how big of a development team actually works on it now?

Fear not indie fans, because for the past two years Phil Spencer and company have been trying to make it up to fans with their new indie service simply titled ID @ Xbox. This year at E3, Microsoft showed off many new and interesting ID @ Xbox titles, but one of them stood out more than the others.

Cuphead 4

Enter Cuphead, a quirky platforming shooter game that’s stylized as if it was a cartoon that came straight out of the 1930’s. Developed by just two brothers, Chad and Jared Moldenhauer, Cuphead is the brother’s first venture into the indie games scene with their studio, Studio MDHR. I had the honor of being able to try the game out at the Xbox Lounge at Comic-Con (When the insanely long line allowed it.) It seems like Microsoft has a lot of faith and confidence in Cuphead, but is there more to the game than just its old timey art style? Thankfully, I can say without a doubt, Cuphead not only has a lot more charm than just its art style, but it’s sincerely one of the most fun indie games I’ve ever played.

Story and Gameplay

The story is very simple, but kind of twisted. Two anthropomorphic characters, Cuphead and Mugman, decided to play a game of dice with the Devil. They end up gambling their lives, and in a cruel twist of fate – lose. The Devil agrees to let them live; on one condition. They must do his bidding from now on. So, now it’s up to our ‘heroes’ to destroy whoever the Devil tells them to in order to gain their freedom back.cuphead and mugman

 

From there, you’re given the chance to access a quick tutorial level and then about 3 actual levels. For the sake of keeping the line moving, I decided to play with a second player and only play one level which was the garden. In this level, you must defeat both a giant potato that shoots dirt clods and worms at you and a giant psychic carrot with three eyes that shoots carrot missiles at you. If that sounds crazy to you, that’s because it is. The controls are super simple and very responsive. You have your standard jump and attack buttons, but you also have a dash button and a change weapon button so you can experiment and see what kind of projectile works best on that enemy.

It should be said that Cuphead might not be what some people are expecting it to be. For starters, yes it’s a platforming shooter, but there aren’t really any “levels” per say. This game is more akin to what you would find in a boss rush mode of a game. While that may sound intimidating to some newcomers, don’t let that dampen your experience. Even if you aren’t the best at modes like that, the developers have made it very accessible for newcomers. One way they do this is by making the attack patterns of the first couple of bosses you play very repetitive, so that it’s easier to remember their attacks.

At the end of the day, I can’t say enough good things about how amazing Cuphead is. From an amazing art style to its very easy pick up and play controls, Cuphead is looking to be one of my all-time favorite indie titles right next to Shovel Knight and The Binding of Isaac. This year’s San Diego Comic-Con may be over, but that doesn’t mean coverage on it has to stop (seriously, we just saw so much). Last week, I had the chance of visiting the Xbox Gaming Lounge to spend some time with Rare’s new anniversary collection, Rare Replay. For those who don’t know, Rare Replay is a 30th anniversary title that celebrates the company’s 30 years of being in the industry. 30 years, 30 games, 30 dollars, what a deal, huh?

The game collection on this pack is massive, ranging from spectrum games like Jetpac and Sabreman, to some of their newest outings like Viva Piñata and Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts.

Snake

The collection as a whole includes: Jet Pac , Atic Atac, Lunar Jetman, Sabre Wulf, UnderWurlde, Knight Lore, Gunfright, Slalom, R.C. Pro-Am, Cobra Triangle, Snake Rattle ‘n’ Roll, Digger T. Rock, Solar Jetman, Battletoads, , R.C. Pro-Am II, Battletoads Arcade, Killer Instinct Gold, Blast Corp, Banjo Kazooie, Jet Force Gemini, Perfect Dark, Banjo Tooie, Conker’s Bad Fur Day, Grabbed By The Ghoulies, Perfect Dark Zero, Kameo: Elements of Power, Viva Piñata, Jetpac Refueled, Viva Piñata: Trouble In Paradise, and Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts. It’s really quite the list.

For the sake of the demo, I only tried out Nuts & Bolts and Snake Rattle ‘n’ Roll, so other people would have a chance of trying the title out. Both games functioned as they should and were just as fun as when they came out. Although, the controls for Snake Rattle ‘n’ Roll felt a little odd due to using a control stick on an isometric view. While Nuts & Bolts was fun for a first time playing it, the game was suffering from framerate issues in some areas, specifically when you’re in the main overworld, Showdown Town. They let me know that they were still working on debugging and fixing most of their 360 titles, so hopefully framerate issues on a far more powerful console won’t make it to the final release.

RareRevealed

Sure, the collection of games is amazing, but knowing Rare, they always love going one step beyond. Not only is the game collection only 1/3rd of the actual game, but there’s also 2 other fully fleshed out features in the title. This includes a snapshot challenge mode where you’re tasked with completing specific challenges from old games in order to earn stamps (infinite Battletoads turbo tunnel anyone). Once you’ve earned enough stamps, you’ll be able to access the last part of the game titled Rare Revealed, where you can access developer diaries and interviews.

All in all, Rare Replay is shaping up to be an amazing game and certainly one that Xbox One and Rare fans don’t want to miss out on. For Rare fans, it’s a must buy, and for non-Rare fans, this is the perfect time to jump in and see what this company is all about. Rare Replay will be released in North America August 4th, Japan August 6th, and the U.K August 7th.

By now, hardcore fans everywhere have seen the videos. Warzone promises to be the next step into large-scale multiplayer combat. Before this, Halo‘s biggest multiplayer mode was Big Team Battle, which pit two teams of 8 against each other. Warzone is similar in concept, but it pushes out to be bigger than anything fans have experienced before. Warzone is everything you see; it’s new, it’s big, it’s fast, and it’s fun.

From the time the match started, until the time it ended, I couldn’t help but think how fun this mode is going to be with friends. As you’ve previously seen, each game starts with retaking your base from enemies. In this particular map, the base is overrun by Prometheans. Surprisingly, these enemies aren’t as easy to take down as you’d think and I wholeheartedly prefer it this way. It’ll take your entire team to eliminate enemies in your base effectively and quick. But once your base is free and clear, you and your team are then thrust into the large map against an opposing team.

Throughout the match, each team is vying to reach 1,000 points before the other. Points are of course given when you kill the opposing team and capture bases placed around the map. Teams that are down by a ton of points should not be discouraged. If your team is able to rally, and if you are able to destroy the enemy’s core in their own base, your team will win the game.

What makes Warzone stand out from previous Halo multiplayer modes is the inclusion of enemy AI, and not just at the start of the match. Throughout Warzone, players will also have to battle against more Promotheans, Covenant, and opposing team Marines. Marines will keep watch over captured bases and will communicate with each other in an attempt to take down enemy spartans. It usually doesn’t go well.

During the match, announcements will be made making players aware of the presence of enemy AI bosses. These bosses will sometimes spawn, near bases or even in vehicles. Taking them down will reward the assassin with a large sum of points. Because of this, the AI bosses will sometimes act as a nexus and attract a larger battle between the boss and his friends, red team, and blue team. I also noticed that no two matches are the same. The game will change according to how each player plays, reacts, and decides what they want to do. One player may focus on capturing bases while another may want to hunt down enemy AI to secure some big points. Some players may want to hang back and snipe while others may want to spend points on purchasing large vehicles and comb the map.

As points are earned, players are also treated to a new requisition system. For those of you familiar with Gears of War‘s Beast Mode, this will be simple. Players accumulate points in which they can spend during the respond screen so that they are able to spawn with a variety of weapons. Essentially, you are spending points to create your own custom loadout in real time. This creates an added layer of strategic thinking. Depending on how the enemy team is playing, you may want to spend your points on certain weapons. However, points spending is not limited to just weapons.

Players will also be able to spend points on vehicles. The choice is always yours, and with team communication, one team can dominate another team with poor communication. One thing about Warzone that everyone needs to realize is that the match cannot be one by just a couple of spartans. It’s going to take the team. So far, Warzone looks to be the mode I’ll dive into right after campaign.

Halo 5: Guardians is set to release October 27th, 2015

As expected, Microsoft announced the next title in the Gears of War franchise.

Two things stuck out immediately: First, we are treated to two new characters previously unseen in previous games. Second, the title of the game is Gears 4, meaning that this iteration will probably be taking place after the events of Gears of War 3. This is a welcomed assumption as I’m sure only a few of you would like to revisit something akin to Gears of War: Judgement.

Gears 4 is set to release Holiday 2016. 

Microsoft started their E3 with a bang by bringing out Spartan Locke and company in a gameplay reveal trailer. The trailer, among other things, sets the stage for shape of things to come regarding Halo’s campaign. Spartan Locke and his team of Spartan IV’s, Sergeant Buck from Halo ODST included, are on a mission to bring the Master Chief and his friends back to the UNSC. It should be noted that Master Chief and his squad have deserted the UN.SC and are seen as traitors by many.

Campaign missions will feature drop-in/drop-out co-op gameplay for both Master Chief and Spartan Locke’s campaign missions, which is a sure upgrade from Halo: Reach. The gameplay trailer opens up with the Battle of Sunaion, which was a battle between what seemed to be Master Chief and his squad and the Storm Covenant from Halo 4. As the fight progresses, Locke and his team encounter new “soldier” class prometheans. Halo 5‘s new squad commands are also on display as Locke and his team sweep the city.

Second, 343i was proud to show off their new multiplayer mode, Warzone. This mode promises to feature player vs. player combat with the inclusion of AI enemies. The maps, as stated, are also promised to be four times larger than any previous Halo map to date.

Halo 5 Guardians is set to release October 27, 2015.

It’s here, folks! Let’s be real here, we all knew it was coming. 60 fps, 1080p, Gears of War Ultimate Edition promises to play just like we remember. To be clear, this is not a remaster of the past three games. Ultimate Edition features only the first Gears of War title.

But don’t let that stop you. Codes for the games beta are being rolled out to Xbox Live members. It is a public beta that will run throughout the week so we can all get in on the action. And if you’re having trouble downloading the beta to your console, do not fear, I am too.

Gears of War Ultimate Edition releases August 25th, 2015.

For so many years, Final Fantasy had followed the traditional JRPG formula. You take control of a diverse group of characters, fight some monsters, and save the day. Tactics was one of the first games in the series which began to deviate from that norm, expanding the catalogue into turn-based-strategy territory. Then along came the MMOs, then the sequels and remakes, the movies, the music games, etc. With the announcement of the upcoming Dissidia arcade fighting game (which looks amazing by the way), there are seemingly no boundaries for the iconic franchise. With each new installment of a game bearing the Final Fantasy name, you’re never quite sure what you’re going to get, so when I sat down with Type-0, I was prepared for anything.

Final Fantasy Type-0 is one of three main series that make up the collective Fabula Nova Crystallis which includes Final Fantasy XIII and XV, along with their sequels and companion games. Much like the Ivallice Alliance, which consisted of the Tactics series, Final Fantasy XII and Vagrant Story, the games all have ties to the same lore, rewarding the diehards with multiple references. Type-0 introduces its place in the lore through a drawn out opening cutscene and a fairly short Mission battle. Unless watching Chocobos die a slow, painful death for 20 minutes is a pastime of yours, it’s a really odd way to kick off your game. Afterwards, you are free to roam around your main base of operations, a training ground/school called Academia. If this sounds familiar, then rest assured, this is as far away from VIII’s Garden as it can get.

Your party consists of twelve playable characters from Academia’s Elite Class Zero.  Each member of Class Zero has a unique weapon specialty; anything from swords and guns to a Soul Calibur-esque blade-whip that would make Ivy jealous. Each character also has a set of upgradable skills, some of which are latent. These include providing an increase in maximum dodge-roll limits, and some are equip-able abilities, such as unique weapon attacks and different types of magic. Some time into the game, you will be introduced to the Altocrystarium, which can be accessed in Academia or at any time from the options menu. Here, you can trade collected Phantoma collected through battle for magic and special move upgrades. However, be aware that with each stat you upgrade, it will reduce a different stat’s efficiency so you will need to plan upgrades accordingly. Depending on your taste for action, you will likely realize a combat favorite or two.

During random battles and missions, you will take control of the character that you have assigned as your lead (or the first character in the party list if that one dies) plus the next two characters at the top of your party list. After defeating an enemy, you will need to target them to absorb their Phantoma and items, should they be carrying any. You’ll realize pretty quickly that having a character with area magic such as Blizzard will be essential for mowing down low-level random encounters.  One fantastic feature of Type-0’s battle system is the ability to time your attacks for massive damage, often after your enemy performs a powerful attack or spell. I got a real kick out of tactically defeating level 55 Behemoths with characters less than half their level.  If at any time a character is defeated in battle, you can swap them out for another until all of your twelve are used up. There is no real traditional escape option, so make sure you’re as prepared as you can be before heading off to battle.

Mission battles in towns will allow you to experience an interesting feature of battle within Type-0. Before Mission Battles, you may enable a feature which allows characters with names based on the game’s developers to join your party at random during a Mission. These characters disappear after a set time, which can be extended by defeating enemies, bosses and advancing through the mission. They will also gather SP, which can be used to trade for items back in Academia making their usefulness last beyond developing the game you’re reading about. If you’re more of a lone wolf, you can choose to disable the option if you’d rather go it alone. Though it sounds pretty cool, I found the feature to be a bit intrusive and restricting, although the characters themselves can be quite useful in a tough battle. However, if you happen to be controlling a character you don’t particularly want to play with for extended periods of time, you’re stuck with them until the time-limit runs out and your original playable party member returns to battle.

You’re given a set amount of time to explore the world until Mission Day, which will advance the main story. Talking to NPCs within Academia with a bright green exclamation point over their head or interacting with marked locations will trigger an Event. Events take up 2 hours of your time until Mission Day and will awards an item for completing them. Most of the time, you will usually get some mundane flavor text regarding a no-name NPC you happen to be chatting with. Sometimes, however, these interactions will trigger a short in-game cut-scene including various members of Class Zero. Some of these events are character-specific, and they usually tell you what character you need to trigger the Event.

Certain marked NPCs will have various Tasks for you to complete. Tasks are usually very straight forward and they don’t take away any time from your Mission Day countdown, unlike Events. Fetch-quest type Tasks can be completed without too much extra hassle, but Tasks where your party is asked to defeat certain enemies or numbers of enemies out in the field require you to use up the game-standard six hours for exploring the over-world in order to complete.

On that subject, here’s a tip that made managing Missions more enjoyable. Every town on the over-world map usually has at least one NPC with a Task for you to complete. However, if you are working on completing a hunting request, it is advisable to complete it before attempting any from townspeople. Towns can also hide unmarked NPCs with a hidden task for you to complete. Sometimes the task will be spread among multiple NPCs, so it’s I’d suggest talking to as many of them as possible. Certain towns also have salesmen who will buy any extra Phantoma off of your party for a pretty fair price, so be sure to remember where you find them!

If you’re a fan of the lore of Fabula Nova Crystallis, make sure to be on the lookout for L’Cie crystals lying around the game. You can turn them into a specific hidden character in a certain town to hear the last words of the L’Cie they belong to. There are more than 40 to collect and they can be found almost anywhere, offering an interesting nod to those who were engrossed by the universe introduced in FFXIII.

Aside from the main battle system, occasionally you will need to participate in territory wars in the over-world to capture territories and towns from the enemy. Mog’s tips will be essential for completing these scenarios effectively, in addition to tons of patience. This battle system takes away from the flow of gameplay, feeling completely different compared to the normal battle system. It can get a bit a bit frustrating if you don’t like or are not used to the style of gameplay.

Speaking of side modes, Chocobo breeding also makes a return in Type-0. When you visit the Chocobo Ranch through the central portal in Academia, you will eventually be given a sort of “starter set” of Chocobo. From there you can breed by using various types of greens as per the norm where the series mainstays are concerned. Different greens may yield new outcomes of Chocobo with interesting battle and travel specialties, so it’s best to stock up on greens where you can and try different combinations at the ranch every few in-game hours. Don’t worry too much about running out of birds to breed either. They can be found running wild on the over-world map, just waiting to be caught.

Final Fantasy Type-0 has a LOT of content. Like, a lot. Be prepared to spend many an hour at your console of choice searching caves for Task items or defeating wave after wave of random encounter enemies, harvesting rare Phantoma for upgrades. Personally, I felt pretty detached from the story as a whole, but found the battles, Missions and Tasks to be the most enjoyable part of the game. It seems that this installment tried to be a little bit of something for everybody, and no matter how you choose to spend your time in the world of Type-0, it’s definitely worth your 60 bucks.

I don’t write about video games nearly enough as I should, which is amazing when you consider it was G4tv that inspired me to pursue this field. So allow me to be the one to introduce to you the amazing-looking Tembo the Badass Elephant, from the twisted minds at SEGA and Game Freak.

Just. Just look at it. LOOK AT THE ELEPHANT BEING A WRECKING MACHINE. Yes, there are humorous, tongue-in-cheek 2D sidescrollers everywhere, but I don’t think there are many that have a genuine sense of joy, heart and fun. Even if its title has “Badass Elephant” in it.

Interesting that the villains are called “Phantom,” if I close my eyes I can almost hear the overture of Phantom of the Opera in the trailer.

Despite aspiring to be a games journalist I really have lost a lot of time for video games. Shane, Joshua, and Derek know way more than I do about the current games landscape, but I still keep my pinky on the pulse so I know enough to understand the prevalence of smaller-budgeted, digital download titles. I also know enough about SEGA’s woes in the last few years, but with a game like Tembo I’m sure they’ll be back on the tip of everyone’s tongues sometime. Maybe. I hope.

We got trailers on trailers leading up to the December 2nd (TOMORROW!) release of episode one of Game of Thrones from Telltale. To commemorate this auspicious event, they’ve released a brand new trailer! And it’s all about episode 1! Check it out! (Did I use enough exclamation marks?)

The season premiere episode will be available Tuesday, December 2nd on PC and Mac from the Telltale Online Store, Steam, and other digital distribution services, and on the PlayStation®Network for PlayStation 4 in North America (SCEA). The episode will be available on Wednesday, December 3rd on the Xbox Games Store for Xbox One® and Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, as well as the PlayStation®Network for PlayStation 4 European (SCEE) territories. The series will also be coming to compatible iOS devices via the App Store on Thursday, December 4th and to Android-based devices later this month. The premiere will also be coming to PlayStation®Network for PlayStation 3 in North America (SCEA) and European territories (SCEE) on December 9th. The rumours turned out to be true. The video game sensation, Minecraft and it’s company Mojang are to be acquired by Microsoft. Announced on their official Business reports blog this morning.

The Mojang team will join Microsoft Studios, which includes the studios behind global blockbuster franchises “Halo,” “Forza,” “Fable” and more. Microsoft’s investments in cloud and mobile technologies will enable “Minecraft” players to benefit from richer and faster worlds, more powerful development tools, and more opportunities to connect across the “Minecraft” community.

 

Under the terms of the agreement, Microsoft will acquire Mojang for $2.5 billion. Microsoft expects the acquisition to be break-even in FY15 on a GAAP basis. Subject to customary closing conditions and any regulatory review, the acquisition is expected to close in late 2014.

 

Available across multiple platforms, “Minecraft” is one of the most popular video games in history, with more than 100 million downloads, on PC alone, by players since its launch in 2009. “Minecraft” is one of the top PC games of all time, the most popular online game on Xbox, and the top paid app for iOS and Android in the US. The “Minecraft” community is among the most active and passionate in the industry, with more than 2 billion hours played on Xbox 360 alone in the past two years. Minecraft fans are loyal, with nearly 90 percent of paid customers on the PC having signed in within the past 12 months.

 

Microsoft plans to continue to make “Minecraft” available across all the platforms on which it is available today: PC, iOS, Android, Xbox and PlayStation.

$2.5 BILLION is a lot of cheddar for ostensibly one game.

Hot on the heels of the official announcement is another, more somber one. Notch is leaving the company. Notch wrote on his personal blog:

I don’t see myself as a real game developer. I make games because it’s fun, and because I love games and I love to program, but I don’t make games with the intention of them becoming huge hits, and I don’t try to change the world. Minecraft certainly became a huge hit, and people are telling me it’s changed games. I never meant for it to do either. It’s certainly flattering, and to gradually get thrust into some kind of public spotlight is interesting.

[…]

As soon as this deal is finalized, I will leave Mojang and go back to doing Ludum Dares and small web experiments. If I ever accidentally make something that seems to gain traction, I’ll probably abandon it immediately.

 

Considering the public image of me already is a bit skewed, I don’t expect to get away from negative comments by doing this, but at least now I won’t feel a responsibility to read them.

The foreseeable future Minecraft doesn’t appear to be going anywhere, and with Microsoft in control you can bet your god damned ass you are going to be seeing much more of it. Minecraft movie? TV show? Minecraft in my Halo?

UPDATE: In an interview with Eurogamer, Microsoft’s Phil Spencer explains that the exclusivity of Rise of the Tomb Raider is, in fact, a timed exclusive. No details on how long the duration will be but at least we can expect it on other platforms in the future.

 

Along with a release window of Holiday 2015, Rise of the Tomb Raider was just announced to be a Xbox exclusive at Gamescom 2014 today. From what Crystal Dynamics Head of Studios Darrell Gallagher says in a Tumblr post, this is not a timed exclusive either.

As you may have seen, we’ve just announced that Rise of the Tomb Raider, coming Holiday 2015, is exclusively on Xbox. We consider all of you to be the lifeblood of Tomb Raider and the work we do at Crystal. I’d like to give you some insight into this decision, and why we feel this is the very best thing for the Tomb Raider sequel we’re creating at the studio.

Tomb Raider in 2013 was a success due in large part to your continued support. Our goal has always been to deliver something truly special with Rise of the Tomb Raider. Today’s announcement with Microsoft is one step to help us put Tomb Raider on top of action adventure gaming. Our friends at Microsoft have always seen huge potential in Tomb Raider and have believed in our vision since our first unveil with them on their stage at E3 2011. We know they will get behind this game more than any support we have had from them in the past – we believe this will be a step to really forging the Tomb Raider brand as one of the biggest in gaming, with the help, belief and backing of a major partner like Microsoft.

This doesn’t mean that we’re walking away from our fans who only play on PlayStation or on PC. Those are great systems, with great partners, and amazing communities. We have Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris coming to those platforms this December, and Tomb Raider: The Definitive Edition is available on PS4.

We know that there are probably many more questions and concerns. Please do send them to us, and we’ll answer to the best of our ability. Meanwhile we’re going all out to try and make something truly special – the most ambitious Tomb Raider game ever built.

After publisher Square Enix reported that Tomb Raider underperformed by not reaching the five million sales number they were expecting, going platform exclusive is confusing to me. With Tomb Raider: Definitive Editon selling a great deal more on Sony’s PS4 versus the Xbox One, this seems like a bad business deal for Rise of the Tomb Raider as well as fans everywhere.

Briefly: What an amazing world we live in.

I remember being little and hearing about the great video game crash of the 1980′s, complete with plenty of rumours that hundreds of thousands of copies of the game that caused it, E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial, were written off, crushed, and buried in a New Mexico landfill.

Turns out that the rumours were true, and earlier this year, Microsoft dug them up.

Why Microsoft? Well, they’re prepping a lot of cool sounding original content for the Xbox platform, including a documentary about the video game crash entitled Atari: Game Over. The documentary will premiere exclusively on the Xbox 360 and Xbox One this Fall.

The first trailer gives some amazing insight into what happened, and we are so excited to hear more. I haven’t powered on my Xbox One in a few months now, but this documentary will certainly get it warmed up again before Halo: The Master Chief Collection launches this November. After the negative reaction to last year’s press conference and a slow start for the company’s latest console, Microsoft had to come out swinging at this year’s E3 press conference, namely with a focus on big game announcements. But amongst the usual suspects like your Halo’s, your Fable’s and your Forza’s, one game was revealed that I doubt anyone could have seriously expected. One from the early days of the Xbox before it was the household name the 360 turned it into. That game is Phantom Dust, and it’s coming back exclusively on the Xbox One.

Promising to bring back this world of magic to the new generation, Phantom Dust was a cult classic from the original Xbox. After enjoying a certain amount of niche success, the title largely floated into obscurity, only being brought up when it came to discussions about the best games that no one has heard of or games with terrible box art. I mean seriously, look at this! I remember seeing piles of these boxes when I worked at Gamestop and thinking how dull and generic it looked.

Still, the game ended up being much better than what was let on, and now the game will hopefully enjoy a much larger audience. But if there was ever a time for an HD remake, I think the original should definitely get the treatment. What better way is there to introduce the game to a group of gamers who has likely never heard of it, let alone play it?

Besides, it’s looking like you’ll want to get caught up, because the teaser for the new Phantom Dust looks like the game just might be a killer app for the new console. But could this mean that other forgotten Xbox properties like Kameo, Mech Assault, and Crimson Skies amongst others might see a comeback?

Microsoft’s 2014 press conference is live at 9:30am, and we’re here at E3 to tell you everything the company has coming.

The company surprised all of us a few weeks back with the announcement of a Kinect-less Xbox One, but does that mean the company is done with its clever camera? Or do they have something up their sleeves that will make new owners want to purchase? Is Banjo Kazooie making a comeback?

Briefly: The next entry in the Halo franchise has just been announced.

We knew it was coming, and we even saw a brief, unrevealing trailer for it at last year’s E3, but the game now officially has a title and release window. It’s called Halo 5: Guardians, and it’ll release in Fall 2015.

Bonnie Ross, General Manager of 343 Industries took to Xbox Wire to talk briefly about the title. She wasn’t able to reveal too much (but told us that much more was coming at this year’s E3 and to stay tuned for more).

Here’s what Bonnie had to say:

Any time you transition to a new platform, there is the opportunity to look at things with a new perspective. For us at 343 Industries, the launch of the Xbox One was an opportunity to think about what stories we wanted to tell, how to tell them, and how best to push the “Halo” franchise to showcase the platform. And, most importantly, combining our passion for “Halo” with the vocal and informative input from our fans.

 

“Halo” isn’t simply a perennial game franchise, it’s a part of the Xbox platform itself. In terms of innovation and ideation, it’s sometimes important to people who might not even play “Halo.” And of course it’s a passion and an essential experience for two generations of gamers.  So we asked ourselves, how do we begin and where do we go with “Halo” on Xbox One?

 

In the past, “Halo” games have pushed the Xbox forward, showcasing the console and its ecosystem in entertaining and innovative ways. Making a “Halo” game that runs at 60 frames per second, on dedicated servers, with the scope, features and scale we’ve been dreaming of for more than a decade, is non-trivial.  It’s a task that we, at 343 Industries, are taking very seriously to ensure we deliver the “Halo” game that fans deserve, and a game that is built from the ground up for Xbox One.

 

I’m happy to reveal that “Halo 5: Guardians,” the next installment in the legendary saga of the Master Chief, will launch on Xbox One in fall of 2015.  In the tradition of every “Halo” game since its debut in 2001, it is a massive and exciting project.

 

“Halo 5: Guardians” is a bigger effort than “Halo 4.”  That applies to the content and scope of the game, as well as the technology in what’s now a brand new and more powerful engine.  Certainly there are some core elements carried over from prior games, but we’ve invested a huge effort in retooling our tech to take full advantage of the Xbox One’s hardware and ecosystem to create worlds and experiences worthy of next-gen.

 

It’s a game that will hopefully demonstrate the talent, learnings and abilities of the 343 Industries team. A game that will incorporate the things we learned from “Halo 4” about technology, aesthetics, performance and scale – and perhaps more importantly, understanding and embracing a community of gamers who love what lies at the heart of this game, and the limitless potential of the “Halo” universe.

 

And 2015 won’t simply be the year of “Halo 5: Guardians,” it will also be a year that offers us a unique opportunity. The opportunity to invite old friends and new audiences into that universe through the “Halo” television series, launched as a unique collaboration with Steven Spielberg and some of the finest creative minds in the business.  A series that will stand alone, as well as complement and enrich the game experience.  We’ll have more to share on the “Halo” television series as we near its projected fall 2015 release.

It’s interesting that they chose to officially announce the game so close to E3, but in any case, we’ll definitely be seeing more of it during Microsoft’s press conference in just a few weeks. Xbox Wire has posted some photos of the dig, and notes that “the findings started out very promising, with an old, dusty Atari 2600 joystick buried in the landfill. Then an “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” cartridge. A box. An instruction manual. And the confirmation of “a lot more down there.”

Briefly: The Xbox One launched in North America (to much fanfare) all the way back in November 2013 (along with 22 other countries). Japan, unfortunately, was not one of those territories, but we now know just when Microsoft’s big black box will launch in the land of the rising sun.

Xbox Japan today tweeted the release date, which falls on September 4th, 2014. It’s crazy to think that the console won’t launch there until it’s been available in other territories for over a year, but that’s probably a testament to how poorly Microsoft’s consoles have performed in the country in the past. There’s still plenty of demand elsewhere, so why focus on a country where there isn’t any?

It’s no secret now. Microsoft has purchased all rights for the Gears of War franchise. This is big, as it will probably have a ripple effect on the video game industry. The franchise will be heading to Black Tusk Studios, located in Vancouver, Canada, far from North Carolina, and relatively close to Washington, where the headquarters of Microsoft Games is.

Immediately following the announcement, Rod Fergusson, better known as of late to have lent a helping hand to Irrational Games as the VP of Development during the tail end of Bioshock Infinite‘s production, was named Partner and Studio Manager at Black Tusk Studios. This will not be Fegusson’s first rodeo in the Gears franchise. Many remember him to be Director of Production at Epic Games during the Gears of War trilogy.

Hanno Lemke, General Manager over at Black Tusk also expects to be a small shift in where developers will go following the purchase. Lemke states, “Once the news spreads about the opportunities at Black Tusk, I’m confident we’ll see interest from a number of talented developers who share the same passion for the “Gears” franchise as the developers at Black Tusk.”

This is similar to when Microsoft purchased the rights to the Halo franchise. This lead to the creation of 343 Industries and a large recruiting process for seasoned developers and anyone involved in the production process, most recently Joe Statan at the beginning of this month. As Microsoft decides what the do with the IP, we’ll see more prominent positions being filled early on.

 Gears of War Original Programming

During E3 2013, it was revealed that the Xbox One would be a platform for original programming based on existing IP’s and as well as yet-to-be-announced IP’s. Most notable of these IP’s is of course, Halo. While this transmedia venture hasn’t happened, nor has recent news been made available, it’s important to note Steven Spielberg is attached. Still, the project is still under development and the public is unaware of any progress that has been or not been made. Still, expect to see at least talk of some kind of Gears of War original program launching on the Xbox One.

Expanded Universe

I’m aware that novels and comics belonging to the Gears universe exist, but since the franchise has gone cold, we’ve haven’t really seen any canonized expansions into the universe. Should Microsoft plan for another trilogy or a layout of several games, we should expect to see a rise in novels and/or comics pertaining to the franchise. Karen Travis, a regular author for Microsoft IP’s, is sure to return to this universe should her trilogy in the Halo universe end well enough that she wants to stick around.

By now, it’s an eventuality that we’ll see a Gears of War AAA title on the Xbox One. But in the mean time, don’t be surprised if we see a sort of arcade-based game releasing onto the Xbox Live marketplace as a downloadable title. It’ll be interesting to see what route Microsoft takes to start getting fans hyped again. Here’s to hoping we’ll see something at E3!

Briefly: Ubisoft announced Assassin’s Creed IV: Freedom Cry all the way back in October (before Assassin’s Creed IV even launched), and has just released the launch trailer for the expansive single-player DLC.

Freedom Cry tells the story of born slave Adewale. Adewale eventually found freedom as a pirate aboard the Jackdaw, where he became Edward Kenway’s second-in-command. Now, 15 years later, Adewale has become a trained Assassin who finds himself shipwrecked in Saint-Domingue without weapons or crew. He starts to meet locals in an effort to assemble a crew and steal a ship. The more he helps, however, the more he is drawn into the Maroon slave community. Forced to face his past, Adewale sets out to free the slaves and bring death to their captors.

Sounds neat, huh? Freedom Cry brings an entirely new single-player story to the already gigantic game. Take a look at the launch trailer below, and let us know if you’ll be grabbing the DLC when it releases tomorrow!

Briefly: Twitch streaming is coming to the Xbox One, but Microsoft has just revealed that it won’t be ready for launch:

We know the ability to instantly broadcast gameplay is something the gaming community is excited about, and we are too. We are working to ensure the initial Twitch on Xbox One broadcasting experience meets the expectations of the Twitch community, so while this feature won’t be available right away, we’ll let you know as soon as it is ready. Our goal is to deliver it during the first part of 2014.

If it’s a better product because of the delay, is a few months of waiting such a big deal? You will be using the service for, like, eight years, after all.

Microsoft also revealed some cool achievements for the service. Here’s what you’ll need to do to unlock them:

-Watch one hour of live video on Twitch to become a Newcomer

-Watch 10 hours of live video on Twitch for Competitive

-Watch 100 hours of live video on Twitch for Best Viewer

-Watch one hour of live video on Twitch channels that have less than 10 viewers to be the Hipster

-Watch 10 hours of live video on Twitch channels that have less than 10 viewers and become the Talent Scout

Max Bandwidth is received by watching a single channel on Twitch for more than eight hours consecutively

Around The Clock is exactly that, just watch at least one minute of live video on Twitch in each hour of a full day

Prime Time, simply: watch a total of 10 hours of live video on Twitch between peak viewing hours from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m., on a weekday
