So, a few days back I reported on ‘GI Joe: Retaliation’ being pushed back and it looks like there’s more than meets the eye here. Wait… wrong franchise. Moving along. We were all told it was so that they could go 3D to pull in a higher international gross. But from the get go there was plenty of people not buying it. Most were positive it was due to ‘Battleship’ sinking and a fear that they would not be able to compete with ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ coming out four days later. Some speculated it was to try and pull in Joseph Gordon Levitt after realizing that once ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ hits… well he’s going to be bigger than he already is.

Well… according to Deadline you were all wrong. Apparently after test screenings Paramount realized they had made some mistakes. Primarily… killing off Channing Tatum. Yeah… they killed him off. Crying fan boys on the internet ACTUALLY got something they wanted and guess what? It turned out bad. Who would’ve thought? Tatum wasn’t a star at all when ‘GI Joe: The Rise Of Cobra’ came out. But after he became a ladies favorite with ‘The Vow’ and had one of the most successful comedies of the year with ’21 Jump Street’ they realized a mistake had been made. It became even more apparent when test audiences commented that the relationship between Tatum and Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson was a “bright spot”.

Sources stated that Jon Chu was “shell shocked” over the release date move. As was Hollywood due to all the money spent on marketing the flick for that date being plastered all over.

Will this affect people going to see it? Probably not. Can this possibly improve the film? I think so. I actually like Channing Tatum (I’m sure now the fan boys shall unite and burn me at the stake) And Ray Park seemed very confident in this movie when I spoke with him at Wondercon. So… lets hope for the best. And look… it just means you can go see ‘Prometheus’, ‘The Dark Knight Rises’, ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ and ‘Ted’ five more times.

‘GI Joe: Retaliation’ strikes March 29, 2013

Now, while it’s not much new footage this trailer does add a little more Gwen & Peter time.

Is the “I’m going to throw you out the window now” a set-up for something in the sequels?

The Amazing Spider-Man swings into theatres July 3, 2012.

Well, many people have been wondering if Nolan is going to kill Batman in the third and final film in his “Dark Knight Trilogy”. And tweets online about the movie bringing the test audiences to tears made it look that way too.

UK filmmaker Danny Allen tweeted recently: “THE DARK KNIGHT RISES has been reducing test screening audiences to tears…. if it matches the truly haunting trailer I don’t blame them.”

But now it looks like that idea has been squashed by Bale in the recent Empire. When asked about returning again he stated “My understanding is that this is the last one. I think it’s appropriate, I think it’s going out at the right time. But…if Chris came to me with a script and said, ‘You know what? There is another story’ then I would love the challenge of making a fourth one work.”

Now Bale could just be playing a game here to not reveal too much but I don’t truly see Nolan killing off Bruce.

Bale was also asked how he would feel about coming for “Dark Knight Returns” style Batman and to play the character as a much older man. He went on to say “That could be an interesting one, couldn’t it? Twenty years down the track…”.

The fire rises July 20, 2012.

In the last issue of Empire Marvel Studios president Kevin Fiege shared his thoughts on the success of “The Avengers” and a little bit about the future films. Primarily focusing on “Thor 2”.

Fiege on the success of “The Avengers” stated “I was just hoping it would beat the opening weekend of Iron Man 2, which was the biggest opening weekend for any Marvel Studios movie. We did 80 or 90 million above that. As the numbers started coming in on Friday night, Saturday night, Sunday night, they just kept getting bigger and bigger, into areas I would never in a million years have believed.”

“The Avengers was not the finale for us,” making it clear the studio still has big plans ahead “It was a giant, giant marker, but it was never the finale. We are already well into the plan for the next phase of our little cinematic universe.” That next phase includes Thor 2, and Feige had this to say about what we should expect from the sequel. “We’re going to see the other side of Asgard. It’s not all polished and golden in this film. And the events of Avengers will have affected Thor for sure. His relationship with Loki will continue to evolve, and the biggest part is Natalie and Thor returning with Jane Foster”

After Loki’s failure in “The Avengers” and the threat made by The Other many speculated that Thanos would be the antagonist in Thors next outing. Fiege was quick to shoot that down and talk of a new villain (most likely played by Mads Mikkelson) “No, future, future. But there will be a major new villain. A major, major new antagonist…”

Could his wording be a hint? Many have begun speculating that it could be The Enchantress and The Executioner…

But could “future” indicate another “major” Marvel villain?

Guess we will have to wait and see.

“Thor 2” smashes into theatres November 13, 2013

During filming of “The Dark Knight Rises” a mystery vehicle popped up on set. Numbers of YouTube videos and pictures of it flooded the internet leading to tons of speculation. Many assumed it was the Batwing but it was never officially named. Until now. “It is called The Bat,” the director tells Empire Magazine in the latest issue. “I spent a long time trying to figure out clever names for ‘bat-something-that-would-fly’, then you go: ‘Oh, it’s a bat.’ It’s very much based on a doubt-bladed helicopter idea, once again a realistic approach to military hardware. We had Corbould and his guys build it full scale and come up with this great driving rig for it so we could photograph it in real streets, and there’s a big computer graphics component to it as well. It’s fun to take Batman to the next level in terms of his transportation and weaponry – in terms of his ability to fight people.”

One of the most memorable parts about “The Dark Knight” was Heath Ledgers performance as The Joker. He left such an impression that after news of his death many internet forums lit up with topics wondering what Nolan would do with the character post “The Dark Knight”.

Many fans had hoped for a recasting or a reference. Maybe even for use of some unused “The Dark Knight” footage. But Nolan had adamantly stated there will be no mention of him in the threequel. “We’re not addressing The Joker at all. That is something I felt very strongly about in terms of my relationship with Heath and the experience I went through with him on The Dark Knight. I didn’t want to in any way try and account for a real-life tragedy. That seemed inappropriate to me. We just have a new set of characters and a continuation of Bruce Wayne’s story. Not involving The Joker.”

The most recent trailer and TV spots have been a tad mellow…

But this one was definitely exciting. Some awesome bits of new footage too.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=wj9Z5Qvn_gQ

Well, instead of making two small posts i’m going make a Iron Man super post.

First things first. If you haven’t already heard… after AvX alot of the creative teams are going to get shook up and switch onto different titles. And apparently one of the most solid of the rumors is that the current Uncanny X-Men team, Kieron Gillen and Greg Land, will be taking over on The Invincible Iron Man.

Kieron Gillen had even previously mentioned at Kapow that “many comics creators want to write Tony Stark right now.” And it looks like he may be the one getting that chance. I know this may not be well received by some fans but i’ve really dug what they’ve done on Uncanny… so im going to give it a shot myself.

Now onto some news that will probably “excite” (for lack of a better word) some fanboys. I’ve been revealing a bunch of male cast additions to “Iron Man 3” this week and now it looks like i’ve got a possible female cast addition or two to add.

Yahoo is reporting that DMG Entertainment, the Chinese arm that will be co-producing “Iron Man 3” with Walt Disney is in talks with actress Fan Bingbing’s agents and are preparing to begin talks on her to appear in the film.

DMG also revealed that they have also contacted Chinese actress Yao Chen for a role as well.

Yes please.

“Iron Man 3” suits up May 3, 2013.

So, not too long ago it was revealed that Hampton Fancher (who wrote the script for the original “Blade Runner”) is returning to write what was also revealed to be a sequel rather than the rumored prequel.

After “Prometheus”… Ridley Scott plans on working on the follow up to “Blade Runner”. Scott recently revealed that the protagonist of the film would be a female but has expressed interest in having Ford return as well. “I don’t think it’ll be Harry [starring]. But I’ve got to have him in it somewhere. That’d be amusing.”

But before any of that begins Sir Ridley Scott is set to direct “The Counselor”, a “morality tale” about a lawyer who foolishly dabbles in the drugs trade. And after that hopefully he can start work on the next “Blade Runner”… unless a sequel to “Prometheus” benches it.

Do we need more Deckard? Will the now 71 year old Harrison Ford do it? Will there be Xenomorphs or not? Was that last one a joke? Yes it was. But as for the rest…

We will just have to wait and see. The yet untitled sequel is set to film next year with a 2014 release.

Well, earlier this week we speculated just who it was going to be when they said “One of the major iconic DC characters will reveal that he is gay in a storyline in June”.

According to the folks over at Bleeding Cool one of their sources revealed to them at Phoenix Comic Con just who the character is.

Well ladies and gentlemen… I’ll fill you in.

Dramatic pause.

Additional unnecessary line.

Wait for it…

It’s Alan Scott. The original Green Lantern. (Who… oddly enough was number one on Eric Diaz’s list)

For those unfamiliar with Alan Scott…

Alan Scott is the ORIGINAL Green Lantern introduced in July of 1940 in All-American Comics #16.

Scott was a charter member of the Justice Society Of America, beginning in All Star Comics #3 (Winter 1940). He served as the team’s second chairman, in #7, but departed following that issue and returned a few years later. He has been a key member of the group ever since, appearing in all three titles bearing the teams’ name.

After the reboot of the DC universe Alan Scott was first reintroduced in Earth-Two #1. So, I definitely can say alot of people are about to start rushing to pick that book up and retailers may just be bumping up their orders for #2.

This weekend a six minute preview for The Amazing Spider-Man was attached to Men In Black 3 IMAX screenings. Can’t make it to the movies? Can’t wait that long? Need something to get you even more excited than you already should be for this movie? Well, you’re kind of in luck. A low-res video of that preview has leaked online…check it out!

“The Amazing Spider-Man” swings into theatres on July 3rd, 2012.

Next week, Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics are set release a new gameplay trailer titled “Crossroads” for the upcoming Tomb Raider reboot. Check out the teaser for the upcoming gameplay trailer.

Tomb Raider is scheduled for a 2013 release.

One thing that can be said about Marvels Ultimate line is that well… anything goes. And if you’ve been reading ULTIMATES… you’ll know what I’m talking about. Starting July in ULTIMATE COMICS ULTIMATES #13 is Divided We Fall… a story stretching across all three Ultimate books. This story began in ULTIMATE COMICS ULTIMATES #10 which was the first issue that saw co-writer Sam Humphries and artist Luke Ross joining Jonathan Hickman. This issue had former Fantastic Four leader Reed Richards eradicating Washington D.C. decimating the U.S. government to the point where the off-site Secretary of Energy became next in line for the presidency.

“That’s something you can’t get away with in the mainline Marvel books, or in the movies, the cartoon shows, the video games—any place where they tell stories about Marvel characters,” says Humphries of the incnident. “I’ve always looked at the Ultimate Universe as a place that is fundamentally different. Characters are bigger, stakes are higher, and fate is more extreme. Day to day life has sharper edges.”

“It’s like the Earth’s axis is tipped one inch further to the left—you’d never be able to measure it, but everything about living on the planet would be irreversibly affected.”

ULTIMATE COMICS ULTIMATES #11 hits shelves next Wednesday May 30th and we will see S.H.I.E.L.D under new leadership with their top operatives on the run as fugitives.

“The previous president removed Nick Fury and put a new guy in his place,” Humphries recounts. “Then an attack on Washington vaporized most of the United States government. The world security agency doesn’t know which way is up anymore. They’ve got an identity crisis, and to paraphrase Marshal McLuhan, the less identity we have, the more violence we see.

“[But] Nick Fury is always in control. Even when you rip S.H.I.E.L.D. away from him and put him on the run, he’s still the man with the plan.”

And while this is all going on the other Ultimates will have their own issues to face. The worst off of them all being Tony Stark. Tony has discovered his dormant brain tumor has returned and with comes growing hallucinations.

ULTIMATE COMICS ULTIMATES #12 will be hitting shelves June 27th and with it we will see Hickman take his final bow. Humphries will take over the title full time… but will definitely not be ignoring the path Hickman has set the book on.

“Jonathan’s been crushing it on ULTIMATES with some huge developments,” he says. “I’d be a fool not to work from what he’s set up—it’s a world rife with potential and big moments. At the same time, Hickman has maintained from our very first conversation that it’s imperative for me to write what I’m interested in writing instead of trying to ape or continuing someone else’s work. What you’re reading now is a true blend of two perspectives on the Ultimates.”

And finally as stated above… starting in July… Divided We Fall.

“The thing about Divided We Fall is that the books are interconnected, but not interwoven,” Humphries explains. “All the books are experiencing the same chaos, but each book gives you a different point of view. What Miles Morales sees isn’t what Thor sees isn’t what Rogue sees. So each book tells the same larger story, but they can be read independently of each other.”

I can say that i’ve definitely been reading all of the Ultimate books and right now they’re great and this is definitely looking like something that I will be looking forward to.

ULTIMATE COMICS ULTIMATES #10 is on stands now. Get it. Read it.

Here’s a lettered preview of Millar & Yu’s SUPERCROOKS #3 hitting shelves soon. If you haven’t been reading this book or heard of it yet I highly recommend it. Imagine Oceans Eleven… but with super villains. And well… in the style of Millar.

Shooting has started on “Iron Man 3” and we are getting more and more interesting additions to the cast.

First up. According to Latino Review:

“Yesterday, Guy Pearce (who will be playing Aldrich Killian) graced Wilmington for a costume fitting along with a familiar face that is as-yet-unreported. Who was that blond man wandering around the ‘Iron Man 3′ stages?”

That man was William Sadler. Most of us will best remember William Sadler from ‘Die Hard 2’.

Next up. Variety is reporting that Ashley Hamilton is in talks to play the villain Firepower. So that adds yet another villain to the cast. However if we actually see him suit up… is another story. But the addition of this character has led to speculation that they will incorporate elements of Armor Wars into the plot.

And finally. The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Jon Favreau will be returning as Happy Hogan. Which is good news for anyone that was worried about there being any bad blood between Marvel and Favreau after the mixed response to ‘Iron Man 2’.

So, that’s three more additions to what is shaping up to be an awesome cast including Robert Downey Jr, Gwentyth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Ben Kingsley, Andy Lau, James Badge Dale and Rebecca Hall.

‘Iron Man 3’ suits up May 3, 2013.

Next months issue of Astonishing X-Men is sure to stir up some controversy. Well… it already has but that’s for another time. Today we get a first look at Marko Djurdjevic’s fantastic variant featuring Northstar and Kyle ready to seal their wedding with a kiss.

Axel Alonso and Majorie Lu also went on to comment about the issue.

“When gay marriage became legal in New York State, it raised obvious questions since most of our heroes reside in New York State. Northstar is the first openly gay character in comics and he’s been in a longterm relationship with his partner Kyle so the big question was – how would this change his relationship?,” Marvel’s editor-in-chief Axel Alonso told Rolling Stone “Our comics are always best when they respond to and reflect developments in the real world. We’ve been doing that for decades, and this is just the latest expression of that.”

“Here are two people, trying to live their lives – mutant and gay, black and gay – empowered in their own ways, but also fringe-dwellers,” says Astonishing X-Men writer Marjorie Liu. “And they’re making it happen. They’re living life on their own terms. It doesn’t matter that it’s a superhero comic, the message is: You can do the same thing.” For the rest of the interview, in which Axel Alonso addresses the fact that one of Northstar’s fellow team members aren’t too happy with this wedding… click the link below.

With filming starting later on this summer the “Thor 2” casting has gone into full swing (pun…very much intended) Marvel is looking to choose the right actor for a certain villain role and has apparently set their eyes on Casino Royale baddie, Mads Mikkelsen.

Variety is reporting that Mads is up for a villainous role in Marvels “Thor 2”.

“It is unknown at this time what part he will play, but what is known is that his Tom Hiddleston, who played Loki in the original, will still have a big part as an antagonist. Marvel and Disney declined to comment on the casting.”

Best known for his role as the villain in “Casino Royale,” Mikkelsen’s pic “The Hunt” recently bowed at Cannes. He’s currently shooting “The Neccessary Death of Charlie Countryman” starring Shia LaBeouf.

Let the speculation on his role begin!

Perhaps The Executioner? There has already been quite a bit of speculation as to The Enchantress being the villain.

Marvel has scheduled “Thor 2” for Nov. 15, 2013

In a bit of casting news that will definitely increase interest in this film. According to THR Gary Oldman has joined the cast of Jose Padilha’s remake of the classic sci-fi, Robocop. The site has reported that the actor will play a character called “Norton”

Oldman will play Norton, the scientist who creates Robocop and finds himself torn between the ideals of the machine trying to rediscover its humanity and the callous needs of a corporation.

If memory serves me correct there was no Norton in the original. So it looks like they are altering the origins just a bit here.

Oldman joins The Killing actor Joel Kinnaman as Alex Murphy.  Kinnaman (The Killing) plays the title character, a cop named Alex Murphy who is brought back from the brink of death and turned into a cyborg police officer. No other cast members have been revealed yet but there has been quite a few big names rumored to be involved such as Edward Norton and Sean Penn. The movie has tentative release of Summer 2013 and is eyeing a September shoot.

Well, looks like there is more to GI Joe being pushed back than originally reported:

According to Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s tweet here it looks like they will actually be shooting new scenes for 3D rather than opting for a simple post film, 3D conversion.

Originally it was Jon Chu who chose to not shoot the film in 3D due to the budget.

[Per: The Hollywood reporter]

THR: How was it decided not to shoot the film in 3D?

Jon M. Chu: There was a point where we were talking about it when I first came. It seemed like a natural thing, but I told them, “I know 3D. This is what we need. If we’re going to do 3D, we’re going to do it right.” It had a certain price tag to it, and I was like, if you guys are down I’m down, but I do need more time to do it right. And they were about to do it but they cut it just a little bit short, and [I said,] “if you guys are going to cut it short there is no point. Let’s make a movie — let’s go for it and we’ll go all out. And we shot on film, super-35, and I thought this may be one of the last times I get to shoot on film, and it was actually kind of freeing. I mean, I love 3D and I think there is a lot you can do with it, but there is something to be said about just not waiting for anything. You’re just going. We shot so much film. I mean I think we shot 1.2 million feet of film.

Yesterdays announcement disappointed and let down numbers of fans that were looking forward to the original release date next month. The announcement also led to plenty of speculation as to why the film was being pushed back nearly a year. Some critics even stating Paramount had other motives beyond the 3D. The most interesting of the rumors being that Paramount is using the additional time to actively pursue Joseph Gordon-Levitt to return as Cobra Commander. While I see this being highly unlikely…you never can rule anything out these days. But I don’t see it happening.

GI Joe: Retaliation hits theatres March 29, 2013. Well… hopefully.

Well, to begin… if you’re not reading Ultimate Comics X-Men… drag yourself to the store tomorrow and buy all twelve issues. It’s that good. This series is one of those books that when you’re done reading the last page you keep trying to turn it to find more hidden pages and upon giving up you read the issue again trying to catch things you missed. The book has been telling multiple story lines and doing a great job at it so far and leaving you hungry and wanting more each time. I was particularly excited for this issue due to it focusing on one of my all time favorite characters… Alex Summers aka Havok.

It picks up months after the Ultimatum wave where we find Alex Summers checked into a mental institution.

I’m going to try and make this review as spoiler free as I can so here goes…

The art is clean and fantastic. The story flows well with what has been going on in the past issues (like I said… spend your kids lunch money) and even makes it make less sense but in an awesome way. Flashbacks, hallucinations, bears… oh my. Well minus the bears that is.

The secondary focus of the issue is a mysterious character who you wont find out the identity of until the final page. And when you do find out his identity and you also pay close attention to that page and the “… what the hell” aspects of it… you’ll definitely go back to page one and give this book a second read. I’m more bummed that I have to wait another month to read the next issue than I am by the news of GI Joe being pushed back a year.

Maybe I’m being a tad biased due to my love of this series (and trust me… I used to be quite anti-Ultimate)

Score: 8.5/10

So, it looks like some people are going to be let down next month.

Just one month before G.I. Joe: Retaliation was scheduled to hit theaters June 29, Paramount decided to move its release date to March 29, 2013 in order to convert the movie to 3D.

A studio exec has stated “We’re going to do a conscientious 3D job because we’ve seen how it can [do] better box office internationally. Jim Cameron did all of Titanic’s 3D in post – and look how well that movie turned out.”

The thing is…what they’re doing IS smart. 3D movies do tend to be more profitable across seas. Its also going to be hard competition for movies this summer (especially with Retaliation coming out literal days before The Amazing Spider-Man) with so many exciting films on the horizon. And as Battleship proved by sinking under the weight of The Avengers…timing may be everything with these releases.

Well…looks like they’re going to have to reprint those posters eh?

Does this decision make me want to see this movie less? No. I’m still going to be dead center geeking out to Snake Eyes and Firefly the whole time.

Eh at least on the bright side though here…this DID cause Universal to bump up Ted by two weeks?

Source: NY Daily News

Starting next month we will see the first crossover between the 616 universe and the Ultimate Universe. Peter Parker will come face to face with Miles Morales in what looks to be a major storyline. A story that will have an effect on both universes as well as many of the characters within these universes…

Bendis has stated that “Ultimate Aunt May and Ultimate Mary Jane and Gwen Stacy and Nick Fury are all involved in the story as well, so there are lot of extremely emotional moments that are going to happen that are almost surreal, but I think very cathartic. I think issue #4 was when Sara emailed me and said, “Alright, I cried. You got me.”

“Nick Fury had a lot going on with Ultimate Peter, and his connection to Miles, and what the right thing to do here is,” he adds. “Every one of these characters has deep, emotional investment into the Spider-Man mythos, some of them suffering quite a lot, and there may be room here for some catharsis that lets them move forward in a positive way. What is it like for a character like Gwen Stacy to find out there’s another universe out there with another Gwen Stacy?” If you haven’t read or heard by now…this crossover is caused by the fan favorite vix.llain…Mysterio “You will find out all of what’s going on with Mysterio, and how this is connected to the Ultimate Universe, in the very first issue. We give that up right away, because there’s so much else to get to. You will see what Mysterio has done and how he’s done it, and for long-time readers, they’ll be very excited; if you don’t know a damn thing about Mysterio, you’ll know exactly what’s going on.”

I’m pretty excited to read this one myself and if you want to check out the full interview…click the link below.

Now…C2E2 was awhile ago.

But one of the interviews  barely surfaced online yesterday.

In this interveiw Dan Slott went on to say…

“What happens in #700 — everything I’ve written my entire career in comics, nothing has had this big an effect on a character than what happens in “Spider-Man” #700. Other creators will say, “This will break the Internet in half,” and “This will do this” and “This will do that” — this is for real! This is my biggest whack at the comic book piñata. I’m breaking it and all the candy’s coming out. It’s not going back together. Something really seismic is going to happen in “Amazing Spider-Man” #700. So, you’re going to have “AvX” happen and shortly after, “Amazing Spider-Man” #700 and the Marvel Universe that you’re going to see after that — it’s not a reboot. There is no reboot. But the effects of “AvX” and the event that happens in “Spider-Man” #700 are so big that you’ll be looking at quite a different landscape after the seismic change”

And apparently Slott has stated that Marvel Editor-In-Chief Axel Alonso has been in contact with other creators on other Marvel books to ensure they reflect whatever changes.

So, what is the big change? Who knows. I don’t even want to speculate here and i’m hoping its something awesome (because honestly ASM has been pretty awesome as of recent) But I definitely don’t feel the urge to get into “OMG WHAT IS IT?” because I want to be suprised.

I will say however (because I know someone will say it and make threads about it online) they are not going to kill Peter Parker. They already did that in the Ultimate line and that’d be the stupidest thing possible. I for one am looking forward to see where they go with this even though it is a good while away.

Well, if you’ve been seeing the promos and you’ve been wondering “Wow…who is getting married in Astonishing X-Men?” well…you’re the only one.

Marvel seems to be one upping DC yet again. DC announced this week that one of their characters would be coming out as gay. Well..Marvel has been there and done that (Rictor and Shatterstar for those behind on the times) and they’re going the next step.

In issue #51 we will see Kyle and Northstar tie the knot. Well that is…unless someone comes to ruin the day in the typical comic fashion.

From Marvel Editor in Chief Axel Alonso:

“The Marvel Universe has always reflected the world outside your window, so we strive to make sure our characters, relationships and stories are grounded in that reality. We’ve been working on this story for over a year to ensure Northstar and Kyle’s wedding reflects Marvel’s ‘world outside your window’ tradition.”
