Sometimes it takes the right voice, the right pacing and the right mood to convey a message. Sometimes it just takes Sean Bean.

The surge of simulations games doesn’t seem to be slowing down, and the newest iteration of the crazy popular Train Simulator series is out now! The team over at RailSimulator have just put out this launch trailer and I say it is epic. Bonus points for the inclusion of the Alaska Railway!

They seem to really be wanting to put some emotion into this game. They must have taken a cue from Forza 4.

You can get your hands on Train Simulator 2014 RIGHT NOW on Steam.

This is the week of Steam! With the announcement of Valves dedicated OS on Monday, gamers and journalists alike started speculating right away what the next two would be. Well speculate no further! Valve has officially announced dedicated hardware, lets take a look at Steam Machines!

Valve is finally getting into the home “console” market. They are going to be partnering with hardware manufacturers (who those are have yet to be released) to create dedicated Steam Machines that will run Steam OS. There will be multiple devices available come 2014, but they have created a Beta device as a proof of concept. No pictures of the Beta, but they have listed instructions so that you could be one out of 300 people lucky enough to test the hardware. Instructions are as followed:

THE HARDWARE BETA ELIGIBILITY QUEST:
Before October 25, log in to Steam and then visit your quest page to track your current status towards beta test eligibility
3. Make 10 Steam friends (if you haven’t already)
4. Create a public Steam Community profile (if you haven’t already)
5. Play a game using a gamepad in Big Picture mode

No pictures of the Steam Machine has been released yet, but Valve is saying that it will be open and upgradeable (want to tear it apart and put a different OS on it? Sure go ahead!), and that there will be several options to choose from. They also state that this will NOT interfere with their PC market and you will not be forced to purchase additional hardware to continue using Steam.

This is a HUGE step in the direction for Valve. They’ve been a huge thorn in the side of home consoles for almost a decade now, and with Gabe Newells public disdain for companies like Microsoft, it’s obvious he wants to create a truly open platform.

Thoughts? Well, I am of course excited being a Steam/Valve fanboy, but at the same time I have to step back and look at this objectively. The concept of open gaming, much like Communism, sounds great on paper but in practice is hasn’t done so well. The Ouya is a perfect example of the “Open Gaming” platform and that hasn’t done to well. I believe Valve has the foresight to not fall into the same hole that Ouya did. A Steam Machine will of course lock you into Valves ecosystem, so those giant AAA titles like Battlefield and Need For Speed will still require you to saunter into the computer room and fire up Origin.

As more information is released we will be sure to keep you updated. Be sure to come back FRIDAY for the final bit of news from the company. What do you think it will be? Lets hope Half-Life 3, but with our luck it will be Ricochet 2.

Steam Hardware Announcement

UPDATE:

After some exploration I found THIS patent from valve. It depicts a controller/gamepad with user swappable components.  It looks a LOT like the third picture, don’t you agree?

Valve Controller Patent

Still we can only speculate as to what will be presented Friday, but this looks like a pretty serious contender.

With next gen home consoles being released just around the corner, a lot of gamers have been wondering what’s next for PC gaming? Well look no further, for the collective geniuses at Valve have done it again. Check out Steam OS!

Steam OS is a 100% free Linux based operating system that is designed around the Steam digital distribution system. It’s goal is to bring the Steam PC gaming experience into the living room on your big screen TV. Valve says that they have achieved a new level of graphical processing performance, and they are well on their way to better audio and input performance as well. They state game developers and hardware manufacturers are making new products with Steam OS in mind.

Steam OS Livingroom
Bring a Steam Machine into your living room!

Four new features (well three new ones and one old one) that Valve is bringing to the table are: In-home game streaming, Streaming media services (Think Netflix, Hulu, ETC.), Family Sharing and Parental Controls. These are all bullet points you can find on any home console right now, having them on the Steam OS is a huge step in the right direction.

I expect to see hardware partnerships in the near future, specialized console sized PC’s from hardware manufacturers like Asus, Lenovo, HP and Dell. I’ve always said that the moment Gaming on a Linux based machine was on the level as a Windows machine (No need to run virtualization, emulation or shoddy drivers) I would make the switch. My big concern with the Steam OS is the In-home streaming. This makes me believe that not all games will work on the Steam OS and you will still need a second PC, and if at the end of the day that is the case I don’t see the need to switch right away.

There are still TWO more announcements coming this week, so be sure to check back Wednesday and Friday to see what Valve has planned next!

Steam OS Announcement
Speculation is the second announcement is specialized hardware and the third is a new series of games.

Beta Phase is Go!

New World Interactive’s (NWI) first person shooter, Insurgency, has just entered its Beta phase after a lengthy Alpha on Steam.

Insurgency is the sequel to the free-to-play Source mod Insurgency: Modern Infantry Combat, and the game stays fairly close to its prequel’s hardcore, realistic sensibilities, which should delight the dedicated fans of the original game mod, while its power-to-the-players development cycle is intriguing and should help build a large player base.

NWI set out wanting to create a game that was responsive to the comments and suggestions from the players, and to further that goal, they kept the development phases open to those interested. The Alpha phase has been available on Steam since April 2103, and now the Beta phase has been released. The Beta gives players full access to the current maps, a fairly varied weapon inventory, and the opportunity to not only give suggestions and critiques, but to play with the developers themselves.

The Nitty Gritty

The game allows players to choose which server, modes (four MMO or two Co-Op), maps (eight different ones with different objectives), team (Security, a private military company, or Insurgents, which is, yeah, what it sounds like), type of squad/function on team (Alpha, Bravo, Charlie and Delta squads all have slightly different builds and perform varied functions; Alpha and Bravo are assault, with Charlie and Delta providing cover and heavy artillery) and character build.  No gender choice—it’s a man’s’ world out there.

The gameplay is unforgiving, gritty and realistic; there are no friendly HUDs or cross-hairs; aiming is done either through the true-to-life iron sights, or by just holding down the trigger and pray-and-spray-ing. Teams survive—and eventually win—by taking and holding strongholds and objectives on the Map. The gameplay can go from prolonged tug-of-wars for dominance to minute-long lightening strikes, depending upon the map and mode chosen. How teams work together obtaining and retaining objectives effects the upgrades available and has a long-term impact on the team’s ultimate victory, which reinforces team play and coordination.

Weapons are realistic (AKs, M-16s) and are upgradeable in-game (hints of Counter-Strike here). Upgrades are gained at a pre-determined rate based upon mode and type of gameplay—forcing players to choose the upgrade best for the fight at hand, not necessarily for the long term. These sort of get-me-out-of-this-situation-alive-and-I’ll-deal-with-tomorrow-later decisions are part of what make the game feel so visceral.

And…Then…There’s Just One Thing

NWI tries to strike a balance between one-life gameplay and prolonged action. For seasoned players, they succeed. However, for players new to FPS co-op play, this may not be the best game to start with. With no single-player option, tutorial mode or even a ‘noob’ server, players are thrust right into the action with more experienced players. FPS co-op play is not where you want to cause other people to  wipe—its players aren’t known for their cuddly, loving, supportive, hug-it-out approach to people not playing well. That being said, the game is in Beta and if the changes made since Alpha release are any indication, we’re excited to see what the final product is.

The game’s Beta is currently open to all via an early access pass on Steam for $19.99. The full game is expected to be released in 2014.

Already playing Insurgency? Be sure to let us know your thoughts below!

Looks like good ideas stay in Washington. Taking a move out of Microsoft’s play book, it looks like the guys at Valve are incorporating a new feature from the Xbox One. Lets take a look at the new Steam Family Sharing.

Steam is the biggest and most widely used Digital Distribution platform there is. One of the biggest gripes users had was, if a game was bought on one account (say on a family computer) you couldn’t play or access saves from the other game. OR if you logged in you were forced to play on the other account. Now with Steam Family Sharing you don’t have to fuss with that.

Steam Family Share Request Access
What the request process will look like.

The process is fairly painless. You authorize an account and then they request access to a specific game and BAM! You can play it on your own account and own computer. If the user is playing the game and you want to hop on, they will be prompted to either buy the game or have a few minutes to finish up/save their progress. Access is limited up to 10 users and not all games will work. Games that require a third party key or subscription (Think Star Trek Online or other MMO’s) cannot be shared.

For the full press release and expanded be sure to check out the official page HERE. Once there you can follow the directions to sign up for the beta and request access.

Briefly: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is looking pretty awesome at this point, and today we learned just when we’ll be able to play it.

Microsoft’s Major Nelson has announced the official release date for the Xbox version of the title. The game will be available for download on August 28th, and will cost you a cool 1200 Microsoft Points (~$15). The PS3 and Steam versions of the title are expected to release around the same date.

I’m actually really excited for the game to come out. It’s been too many years since we’ve played a decent Turtles game, and from the trailers that we’ve seen so far, Out of the Shadows looks to feature some fantastic gameplay. Let us know if you’re planning to download when it hits the console of your choice!

I’ll be damned. This game looks to be coming together very nicely.

Viacom has unveiled a new character trailer for the upcoming downloadable title, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows. The game is set to release for PS3, Xbox 360, and PC in August, and is based on the original Turtles comics, rather than any of the recent television adaptations.

The game looks much darker than any of the mediocre Turtles’ games from the past few years, and the gameplay looks very solid. Arguably, we haven’t had a great TMNT game since the Super Nintendo days, so Out of the Shadows could be a welcome change to that trend.

Take a look at Leondardo’s trailer below, and let us know if you’re looking forward to the game!

2011  saw the release of Payday: The Heist. A surprise hit from Overkill Software and Sony Entertainment, it puts players in the role of high profile thief’s. Missions range from your normal run of the mill bank robbery to breaking VIP’s out of jail. The game plays a lot like Left 4 Dead (There was even a L4D crossover) but with Police and SWAT instead of zombies. You can get additional points for hand cuffing bank managers and civilizations and destroying video evidence.

The game was surprisingly fun and very difficult. Waiting at key locations for drills and saws to cut through doors added a level of urgency. Recently announced from Sony was the much wanted sequel, dropping “The Heist” from the title, check out the new gameplay trailer for Payday 2

You can get your hands on Payday 2 for Steam, PSN and XBLA this August!

After what seemed forever, SpikySnail is now in the final push to releasing an updated version of their 2012 XBLA release, The Splatters. I had great things to say about The Splatters in my review so with some new tweaks, more modes to play and new insane levels to conquer, it’s only right that it’s called Super Splatters. Even better is that Super Splatters will work on PC, Mac and Linux so no excuses of not playing this game.

If you want to help out this very small team and play a really great physics-based puzzle game, you can pre-order Super Splatters over at superspaltters.com with 30% off until release. Steam codes will be given to those who pre-order or if you want, wait until Super Splatters shows up on Steam and pre-order it there.

Valve is a company that likes to take risks and innovates in ways other companies don’t. Their inventory and item crafting system for Team Fortress 2 changed how the community interacted. Now it appears that they are doing it again. This time with, trading cards? We got a Press Release from Valve today and it reads:

May 15, 2013 — Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Counter-StrikeHalf-Life, Left 4 Dead, Portal, and Team Fortress) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced Steam Trading Cards, a new service that rewards gamers for gaming on Steam.

Released in beta today, Steam Trading Cards allows customers to earn Steam rewards for playing the games they love. Those who participate will receive game-specific trading cards that can be collected to earn rewards such as game badges, profile backgrounds, emoticons, coupons, and more.

The group of titles participating in the Steam Trading Cards beta includes Don’t Starve, Dota 2, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Team Fortress 2, Portal 2 and Half-Life 2. The service will expand over the coming months to include many more titles on Steam.

Some of the available cards for CS: GO
Some of the available cards for CS: GO

They seem like they are taking what they did with TF2 and bringing it to the entire system. Some of the cards can be obtained just by playing the game while some need to be collected through other means.

The biggest feature that this is bringing is the Badge Crafting. Players can take certain cards they’ve collected and craft them into badges. Badges give the player experience points that level up their Steam Profile. This gives them on gameplay bonuses like avatars, emoticons for chat and more friend slots. The big feature you can get are random rewards. These can range from profile showcases for certain games, background image wallpapers all the way up to free DLC and discount coupons.

For more information on the new cards or to sign up for the beta head on over to the official trading card page.

Borderlands 2 writer Anthony Burch made a little mistake on Twitter. He snapped a pic of sleeping head of VP, Steve Gibson. What he didn’t realize is that a giant banner for the next DLC was in the background.

Bae Caught me slippin!
Bae Caught me slippin!

What does this mean for you, the consumer? Well it is most likely the last episode of their season pass of DLC. We can expect the tease we got a month ago was for this. Assault on Dragons Keep looks like it may be a blast!

No release date or official word from Gearbox has been issued. The tweet was removed rather quick, but as Scarlett Johansson can attest to, once online its permanent.

So this just in, the two BIGGEST zombie franchises are coming together in what can ONLY be described as a chocolate-peanut butter situation. From the posted press release:

Capcom and Valve are pleased to announce the Resident Evil® 6 x Left 4 Dead 2 project. This crossover project between two of the interactive entertainment industry’s most respected publishers will see characters from Left 4 Dead™ 2 featured exclusively in the forthcoming PC version of Resident Evil® 6, while enemies from Resident Evil 6 will invade the PC version of Left 4 Dead 2. All content will be made available completely free for fans of either game to access and play.

Owners of Resident Evil 6 PC will be able to select one of four survivors from Left 4 Dead 2’s iconic cast – Coach, Nick, Ellis and Rochelle – when playing PC exclusive mode, The Mercenaries No Mercy. Each character will have a special customized weapon load-out created just for use in Resident Evil 6. In addition to the four survivors, two of the infamous Special Infected zombies from the Left 4 Dead franchise – the Witch and Mini Tank – will also make a cameo appearance in this mode, relentlessly attacking players regardless of whether a character from Left 4 Dead 2 or Resident Evil 6 is chosen. This new and exclusive content will automatically be downloaded in the background to all owners of the PC version of Resident Evil 6 from April 5.

Making the leap to the PC version of Left 4 Dead 2 will be some of Resident Evil 6’s most fearsome enemies – Lepotitsa, Napad and Ogroman. All three characters were brought to life in Left 4 Dead 2 by Valve’s renowned developers using its Steam Workshop tools. Owners of the PC version of Left 4 Dead 2 will be able to face a new deadly challenge when Resident Evil 6 characters infect Valve’s classic zombie title this spring.

Commenting on the crossover project, Chet Faliszek from Valve stated: “We’re huge Resident Evil fans, so when the opportunity arose to work directly with Capcom to combine L4D2 and RE6, we jumped at it.”

Resident Evil 6 Producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi added: “The Resident Evil 6 team really enjoyed working on this crossover, and we’re confident that our fans will have a great time with it too! We hope you enjoy this unique content.”

That is all we got… besides this SWEET Developer Journal and these screenshots!

When we get more info we will keep you posted!

That’s right baby! The chocolate-peanutbutter combination of Limbo and Shadow Complex, Deadlight, is coming to the PC at the end of October! We can only speculate that it will be released on STEAM, but I would be surprised if it wasn’t.

Not much else to say so why don’t you check out their official website and watch the fabulous trailer below!

We recently talked about the threat of legal intervention by German consumer advocacy group, VZBZ, in regards to Valve’s new EULA for their online service Steam. The deadline for them to reconsider and change their EULA WAS tomorrow. Now VZBZ have just released a statement regarding this date.

Valve has a new deadline (10.10.2012) to respond to our letter now. Maybe after this time we will resolve the dispute in the court.

Whoa. Things just got steamy for Valve. After basically ignoring the request to adjust their agreement with users in order to comply with EU law, which states all software must be able to be resold EVEN online purchased games, the consumer advocacy group is ready to bring them to court.

Lets see what happens to Valve and Steam, from what it appears the Good Guy in the market may turn into a Not So Good Guy and end up in EU court.

That’s right baby! The very much anticipated mod of the original Half-Life game, the mod that has been in development for years, gets a release date…TODAY!

If you’ve been living under a digital rock for the past few years let me bring you up to speed. Black Mesa is a total graphical update of the original Half-Life game. When the Half-Life: Source game came out a lot of people were disappointed. It didn’t provide that much of a graphical update and only really changed the physics slightly. Gamers wanted a full update like what we got with Day of Defeat and Counter Strike source. So in 2004 a group of modders got together and created the Source Overhaul group which then turned into the Black Mesa project. What followed was years of Development hell and Vaporware. Pics would come out but we were never graced with a total Source conversion of Half-Life.

Then earlier this year the group said they were done. Very nonchalantly. Just “Hey guys, Black Mesa is done. It will be out this year.”. Then when Valve announced their Greenlight project Black Mesa was one of the first ones submitted and accepted.

Just as nonchalantly as they said they were done they released the mod! So check out the official site HERE. Check out the Steam Greenlight page HERE. And watch the trailer below. Be amazed.

Best part? You can pick this mod up FOR FREE!

Today Valve announced their newest beta project. Putting Steam on your television. Big Picture mode optimizes the Steam application and games for your TV. Take a look at the very Pixar sounding trailer below.

So, Big Picture. Whats up with that? It is basically a full screen mode for Steam that is optimized for TVs, it runs properly formatted for the TV’s over scan and gives you access to that nice daisywheel keyboard, but is it really that big of a leap?

The first “issue” I have with it is its placement. You have to have your gaming PC hooked up to your TV, with and HDMI cable. If you have an HTPC that is capable of playing game then you already have step one solved. The next problem I see  is the controller interface. Not all games will allow use of a controller, or even work that well with one.

Really the video gives you the impression that this is some next level PC-TV integration, but its just a controller mode for Steam. You still have to push the BIG PICTURE button to start it. Hopefully the guys over at Valve give us a little more to go along with this.

For more info check out the official site HERE.

Years in the making, it looks like the highly anticipated Half-Life remake Black Mesa will actually be coming out, and soon!

Not long ago on the developer’s Twitter account, the following was posted

Today is a Red Letter Day. Black Mesa is coming! Check it out!

The page linked in the tweet has gone down, as has the entire Black Mesa site (likely due to a surge of traffic or possibly the renovations that they mention). The downed page contained the following text:

We’re freaking out over here! It is so exciting to share this news with you!

You can now Download the Black Mesa Soundtrack, courtesy of our very own Joel Nielsen, at the very generous price of whatever you want! Enjoy and share!

In the near future you’ll see our Website, Wiki and Forums all taken down temporarily for renovations.

On September 14th you will see the first release of Black Mesa! This will include our re-envisioning of Half-Life all the way up to Lambda Core. We believe this is a great way to provide a complete-feeling 8-10 hour experience with a solid ending, make our fans happy and help us make the best overall game possible.

We are still working hard on Xen and BMDM, but instead of making you wait we are giving you Black Mesa as soon as it’s ready! We’re doing our best to help bring the immense vision of this project into reality, and we are very excited for what the future brings!

This is pretty great news for any fans of the Half-Life series. The then titled Black Mesa: Source was announced in October of 2004. The game is a free mod, and is a remake of Half-Life with all the power and graphical prowess of the Source engine.

Anyone else been waiting for this? I was 14 when they announced this, and now at 22 I’m finally going to get to play it!

UPDATE: The site is back online at www.blackmesasource.com. The main page features a countdown timer to the games release.

A few days ago a mysterious blood stain showed up on the Team Fortress 2 website linking to this odd birth notice. This alluded to a third son of the Mann family, Gray, and conversely a third team to be added to Team Fortress 2 universe. Then we got another blood stain on the Team Fortress 2 page, leading to this odd last will, which was pointing to the fact that the ghost of Mann would return to enact his revenge on those who use his weapons for evil.

Soon the online consensus was that the new “Gray” team would be a horde mode type enemy, and everyone was right. Today we get a trailer for the next update, Mann vs Machine for Team Fortress 2, which releases August 15th.

Switching what seems a decent amount of identities since its conception –from Black Lotus to True Crime: Hong Kong, Sleeping Dogs is what Square Enix is calling this open world action game set in Hong Kong. Whatever Square Enix saw in this title that was worth saving from being shelved, all of us should thank them for picking up the pieces Activision left behind.

Sleeping Dogs does its best to bring the Hong Kong cinema feel to open world gaming. What we get is a story of an undercover agent Wei Shen teetering on the edge, in-house fighting with the Sun On Yee Triads –which is based of the real Triad gang Sun Yee On— and a lot of double crosses. For the most part, United Front Games nails the story in making it feel like most Hong Kong action movies. There are some slight pacing issues in the middle of the game that made me want to just move on with things, but the hooks were in me so deep that I looked past the slow parts. How it all ends also leaves a little more to be desired. Maybe that is my biggest gripe with it all. Sleeping Dogs could have pushed the envelope more but seemed to err on the safe side.

The story was able to shine in Sleeping Dogs due in part to the great cast of voice actors. Just look at this stellar cast:

Everyone nailed their lines and since it seems everyone did their lines in the studio together, there weren’t any long, awkward pauses between characters in the game. Edison Chen seems to channel his inner Bobcat Goldthwait at times. Could you picture Jackie’s character modeled and voiced by Bobcat? Maybe Police Academy 8 will be set in Hong Kong? All I could see when Uncle Po was on screen was James Hong as Lo Pan in Big Trouble in Little China. “They have returned. And this time they are not alone. Egg Shen is with them. Little bastard sorcerer has brought them through the Bog of the Dead Trees.” See? He was foreshadowing meeting Wei Shen in Sleeping Dogs!

What should have been an amazing thing fizzled with Emma Stone’s character. It’s not that she didn’t do a good job, cause she really did. It’s the fact that love interests were whittled down to a two-bit part with the only thing coming out of it being the special bonus to finding items on your mini-map –health statues, lock boxes, security cameras, etc. I would have liked to have seen the ladies play a bigger role in the story of Sleeping Dogs. Having them be something an enemy can use against Wei would give have given the story a more emotional sting to it.

The action in the game is great. Utilizing the school of combat mechanics from Rocksteady’s handbook, dispatching tough guys trying to stomp a mudhole in you is a lot of fun. Although you can sit back and just mash the counter button when enemies turn red, it will be incredibly boring. Instead, the more you treat this like a martial arts movie scene, the more fun you will get out of the combat. There’s enough moves that you will acquire throughout your Hong Kong adventures that it won’t feel that repetitive. You could always use a table saw to slice someone’s face. Or, you could drop their body on some swordfish heads. Death by swordfish, such a terrible way to perish.

Guns are rarely used in Sleeping Dogs, which I love a lot. The few times guns come into play, the controls are a little on the loose side. Thanks to the generous auto-aim, it’s not much of an issue. Sitting behind cover will get you killed so your best option is to slide over cover and enter slo-mo mode, picking off everyone around you with ease. The shootouts that happen during the vehicle chase scenes are a lot of fun but I can see where shooting the tires out of a car for the 15th time can get monotonous. Still, having everything go into slo-mo while leaning out the driver side window making a car flip over from blowing the tires out was a joy for me to do. Boat chases weren’t as fun but that’s because I wanted the boats to flip 20 feet in the air like the cars. I know, how selfish of me.

The promise of quick transitions from combat to chase didn’t quite translate well from paper to video game. Sure, going from a shoot-out in a warehouse to racing down a highway in one mission worked, but when Wei Shen spends 8 seconds too long playing with his crotch rocket, I get a prompt telling me not to lose the person I’m chasing before I even get the damn bike out of park. The animation time of Wei starting up a bike could have been cut down to 3 seconds to make it feel more like an action-packed scene instead of Wei revving the engine trying to look cool for absolutely no one.

Chasing people on foot was great. Free running, sliding over tables, running up walls made it really feel like a good foot chase scene. You’ll still get some issues with the person of interest you’re chasing slowing down enough for you to catch back up if you screw up a button prompt to vault over a table faster. This is still a video game, after all. Wouldn’t be any fun if you had to start over at the very generous checkpoints every time you ran into a wall or jumped up the wrong railing. Vehicle chases are a little more frustrating since not only is it a pain to drive a car in Sleeping Dogs, the camera can also gets away from you since it’s really sensitive. If you can help it, use a bike. They were much easier for me to control.

Now, not having access to the console version of Sleeping Dogs, I can’t say if the PC version is better. I can say that it looks amazing to the eyes, if your PC can handle it. My specs for the system used to play Sleeping Dogs with everything set to medium were:

AMD Phenom II X4 925 2.8GHz

8GB of RAM

ATI 5770 Video Card

Even with some of the assets in the world being flat jpeg images, when using the HD texture pack option, Hong Kong looks sexy to the eyes. You spend most of the time playing at night even though there is a day/night cycle, at least to me. It just seemed like most of the time it was either night time, day time with a cloudy overcast and raining, or night time with rain. Everything looked really good and made me feel like this is what Hong Kong would look like having never stepped foot there myself. Neon lights, street vendors yelling at me to buy cheap suits or food and the random people just chatting about whatever was on their A.I. programmed minds. I found myself driving around the massive areas you can access for at least an hour just to take in all the beauty. If I could only remember to drive on the left side of the road, I wouldn’t have flown 20 feet off my bike every 10 minutes.

For all the side missions you are given in Sleeping Dogs, I never felt implored to go and do them. Racing cars, collecting money from deadbeats, helping random strangers with their issues and hacking security cameras to bust dealers from the comfort of your apartment never felt engaging enough for me to do more than a handful of each.

Unless you want more money or ‘Face XP’ to get access to more choices in the clothes you can wear or the cars you can drive, the benefits you get from doing these side missions don’t outweigh going straight through the story missions. The bonuses and upgrades you can pick from the skill trees you get just by going through the motions of the story is more than enough to make it through to the end. At least you can mop all the unfinished business when you complete the game.

Sleeping Dogs is a open world game that will stand in the limelight with such notables as GTA IV and Red Dead Redemption as an amazing accomplishment. Over the top action, good story, amazing voice work, and the immersive world make this a surprise hit of 2012 and a serious contender for Game of the Year.

That’s right folks. SEGA  just announced an HD remake of the funky fun, rollerblading graffiti game, Jet Set Radio, will be coming out very, very soon!

It hits XBLA and PSN on September 18th (A week early if you have Playstation Plus) and September 19th on Steam. PS Vita owners also get in on the action but will have to wait almost a month later, October 16th to be exact.

This comes shortly after SEGA confirming that the entire Jet Set Radio soundtrack will return, unlike that lame Tony Hawk HD remake. Take a gander at this music tease trailer!

So I’ve heard some things about this game. Seen it up online, but it never really got my juices flowing. Be that for the greater good or not. Then I saw this extended trailer and fell in love. It immediately reminded me Septerra Core, but funny. Check out the trailer below.

The game is only just been released. You can find it, pretty much everywhere. Also, the lead character is named RUFUS.

Grab your favorite orc-slaying sword and a friend — you’ve got some hideous monsters to exterminate. Orcs Must Die 2 is the follow-up to Robot Entertainment’s 2011 tower defense hit that combined real-time combat elements with the best of strategic trap planning. This time, the focus is on co-op action, where you and a buddy must team up to eradicate the endless stream of orcs pouring in from specific spawn points. Thinking you’re going to guard one area while your buddy takes the other? Wrong! You may be able to fight through half the game with this tactic, barely hanging on by a thread, but when various types of orcs begin spawning (particularly earth golems and those damnable flying enemies) you’ll need a different game plan.

You’ll need traps, and a whole lot of them. Spike, steam, acid, and launchpad traps are all meant to slow down orcs that climb up from the depths. Killing off the expendable baddies nets you in-game currency that may be spent on additional traps or troops such as dwarves with bombs or archers. Place them about the battlefield in a bid to help thin the often overwhelming crowds.

Artifacts and relics may be purchased with skulls earned after each area to keep you on top of your game. Though the male player is given a close-range weapon and the female player has a long-range spellcasting ability with the secondary chance to charm enemies (a useful ability, if fluffy) you may upgrade to a crossbow, a lightning ring, or even some admittedly awesome greaves, all of which you can easily switch between on the fly in the heat of the moment.

But don’t expect a cakewalk. Orcs Must Die 2 is a difficult affair. It’s easy to get lost while you’re scrambling to keep scragglers from escaping and blindly slicing through the crowds. It’s also a bit on the repetitive side, especially if you’ve been playing for a few hours or so. But when you’re on crowd control, summoning thunderstorms, and stationing dwarves all around the play field in the hopes that even four or five orcs are obliterated before things get even more hairy, you know you’ve hit the sweet spot. Skip the single-player jazz and go straight to co-op, if you’ve got some friends around. This is a celebration of orcish bloodshed that’s best experienced with comrades.

Long in the works but new to me, JC2-mp is a mod that grants players the ability to play the over-the-top, very fun and popular open world game, Just Cause 2, WITH OTHERS! Check out the action below!

Holy shit that looks crazy fun! I’m going to keep this in my sights. I cannot wait to see what comes of this. I’m going to sign up right now and try to get a shot at playing!

Valve’s new add-on to the very popular game Left 4 Dead 2 has been delayed <once again> for Xbox 360. The DLC, Cold Stream has been promised for more than a year for Xbox 360 players. The blog for the game posted that the new content was releasing July 24th (about two weeks ago). The DLC will also include four other imports from the first Left 4 Dead. They are, Blood Harvest, Crash Course, Dead Air, and Death Toll

“We are working with MS on a release schedule,” Valve wrote on their official Left 4 Dead Developer Twitter feed. “We don’t have an ETA yet but we hope to have it out soon. It will be 560 [Microsoft Points, or $7]… We have no news on an [ETA] yet.”

I actually rushed home today and had my night planned around playing it. Guess if I had my choice I’d take the bat upside Valve’s head for the delay. Better yet, the chainsaw!

The PC version is available now on Steam for free.
