Last week was packed with opportunities to reveal new Pokémon with Gamescom and the Pokémon World Championships both taking place. And by golly, that is exactly what Nintendo did. The Gamescom trailer was released first and featured only one Pokémon, Turtonator. Here is the trailer:

turtonator

Turtonator is a Fire/Dragon-type and knows a unique move, Shell Trap. The move sets a trap at the beginning of the round and if Turtonator is hit with a physical attack in that same turn, Shell Trap will deal a large amount of damage to the opposing Pokémon.

The trailer shown at the Pokémon World Championships showcased four new monsters, unlike the Gamescom’s one. Let’s go through them one by one:

crabrawler

Crabrawler is a Fighting-type, not a Water-type like its appearance may suggest (what with the crab/lobster thing going on). It can have the ability Hyper Cutter or Iron Fist.

sandygast palossand

Here we have Sandygast and its evolution, Palossand. Both are Ghost/Ground-types and have the ability Water Compaction, which will raises its Defense stats by 2 for the duration of the battle every time it is hit with a Water-type move. This ability is unique to Sandygast and Palossand.

stufful

And then there is Stufful, the pre-evolution of the previously revealed Bewear (Kiteruguma in Japan). Like Bewear, it is a Normal/Fighting-type.

Which is your favorite of these newly unveiled Pokémon? Let us know in the comments!

September 30 is the North American release date for Yo-kai Watch 2: Bony Spirits and Fleshy Souls and Nintendo recently gave us the breakdown on the incentives for pre-ordering these two games. There are four bonuses to be had, depending on what title you buy and whether you buy a physical or digital copy.

bony-spirits-jibanyan-medal nyaight

Pre-ordering the physical copy of Bony Spirits nets you an exclusive Yo-kai medal that unlocks the “Nyaight” Soultimate Move for Jibanyan.

fleshy-souls-jibanyan-medal nyext

If you choose to preorder the physical copy of Fleshy Souls, you will receive a different but equally exclusive Yo-kai Medal, this time unlocking Jibanyan’s “Nyext” Soultimate Move.

robonyan-f sailornyan

For pre-orders made through the Nintendo 3DS e-shop, you will receive a code unlocking Robonyan F (Bony Spirits) or Sailornyan (Fleshy Souls). These yo-kai cannot be obtained through regular gameplay. [Correction: They can be obtained post-game.]

komasan noko buchinyan

For those who have played the original Yokai Watch on your Nintendo 3DS, there is a special bonus for you! If you have taken at least one photo with the Yo-kai Cam (found on the title screen), you will get to choose between three special Yo-kai as a gift: Komasan, Noko, and Buchinyan.

So many decisions to make for us Yo-kai Watch fans. Which version will you be getting?

The Pokémon series has had Teams Rocket, Aqua, Magma, Galactic, Plasma, and Flare. Now get ready for Sun and Moon‘s Team Skull! The team was introduced in today’s trailer. Give it a look below:

Let’s break down the highlights, shall we?

Screen Shot 2016-08-11 at 10.53.59 AM Screen Shot 2016-08-11 at 10.56.45 AM

This trailer not only introduces Team Skull but also the minds behind the Grunts, Admin Plumeria and Boss Guzma. We get a hint that Guzma and our Pokémon Professor Kukui have some sort of shared backstory. On a side note, Team Skull’s theme music is sort of grating. I hope it is one of those tunes that grows on you or is kept to a minimum (the latter is doubtful).

Screen Shot 2016-08-11 at 10.59.15 AMScreen Shot 2016-08-11 at 11.01.06 AM

We were also treated to several new Pokémon reveals in the trailer. The first one shown is a curious Water-type called Wishiwashi. It has the ability, “Schooling,” which allows it to go from its “Solo Form” to a “School Form.” Conditions for this transformation, which appear to take place during battle, weren’t clear.

Screen Shot 2016-08-11 at 11.01.59 AM

Next was the Water-type Pyukumuku, whose design was based on the “Sea Bunny” slug. It has the ability “Innards Out.”

Screen Shot 2016-08-11 at 10.59.56 AM

The mushroom-like Morelull, a Grass/Fairy-type, is a pun on the morel mushroom.

Screen Shot 2016-08-11 at 10.57.51 AM Screen Shot 2016-08-11 at 10.57.46 AM Screen Shot 2016-08-11 at 10.57.24 AM

Finally, we get to three Pokémon that will receive Alola Forms: Raichu, Meowth, and Marowak. Alola Form Raichu is an Electric/Psychic-type, whose ability, “Surge Surfer,” doubles its speed when Electric Terrain is active. Alola Form Meowth is a Dark-type. And Alola Form Marowak is a Fire/Ghost-type. It’s design and movements appear to be based on the fire dancers of Hawaii.

Wow! That is a lot to digest. What do you think of this new trailer? Let us know in the comments!

This past week has been a bountiful one for news of Pokémon Sun and Moon. Not only did fans get a brand new trailer but several new species of Pokémon were announced. There is quite a bit of information to go over so let’s take each piece one at a time.

https://youtu.be/TyIkvadJU1Q

I dare you to watch this trailer and not be moved. I get some serious goosebumps every time I see it. In the video, we see the return of the series’ “Pokémon-Amie.” A keen eye will spy a Porygon blowdryer being used in that portion. New features shown included trainers posing during battle. Here’s hoping for some Sailor Moon-style poses!

corocoro8161

Magazine scans containing new Pokémon information were posted on Serebii.net. From the Japanese magazine, CoroCoro, we are introduced to Kiteruguma (Normal/Fighting-type) and Mimikkyu (Ghost/Fairy-type). Kiteruguma is a the red panda mascot costume-looking one on the left page.

corocoro8162
corocoro8163

On the right page is Mimikkyu. This species is draped in a Pikachu costume with its real body hidden underneath (which explains it isn’t an Electric-type).

Pokemon Sun Moon Salandit

In other news, Nintendo revealed Salandit, a Poison/Fire-type. It possesses a brand new ability, Corrosion, that grants Salandit the ability to inflict the poison status on Steel-type and Poison-type Pokémon, which are normally immune.

Man, Capcom and Nintendo are killing it with these crossovers! They already announced DLC starring outfits from The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Strider, Fire Emblemand Okami. And now, we can add Star Fox to the growing list. This one feels very fitting for the cat-like Palico and Prowler buddies, given their furry exterior.

Not only will Captain Fox McCloud be made available as a costume but it appears as though Slippy Frog, Peppy Hare, and Falco Lombardi are also getting similar treatment.

Monster Hunter Generations for the Nintendo 3DS releases on July 15. Will you be joining the hunt?

Monster Hunter Generations for the Nintendo 3DS releases in North America on July 15. Capcom has been generous with the DLC announcements so far, with armor sets themed to characters from StriderFire Emblem, and Okami. We can now add The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker to the list.

Your Palico friends will be able to equip this set (I presume Prowlers will, too). I personally found the set a tad jarring in the video. In a still image, it is kind of cute but put it in motion and it is not my cup of tea. But to each, their own! I am sure there will be plenty of hunters who will fall head over paws in love with this DLC.

MH4U to MHGen Save Data bonus

In other news, those of us who hunted in Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate will be rewarded with several bonus goodies as a reward for having save data for the game on our system. What data you ask? Yuri Araujo of Capcom-Unity explained it this way:

The Save Data in question is the “Extra Data” that gets saved on your SD Card. In MHGen, all data is actually stored on the SD Card as well so you would need to be using the same 3DS to get the Bonus content.
You can, however, transfer your entire 3DS to a new one and claim your bonuses on that one.

The bonus pack includes items to get you started in the game on good footing as well as the exclusive Baby Tigrex Armor for Felynes. The design is based on the monster’s look in Poka Poka Airu Mura DX and it is super adorable!

If you are still on the fence about getting Monster Hunter Generations, the 3DS eShop has an impressively-thorough demo available. Give it a shot!

Today marks the release of the latest trailer of Pokémon Sun/Moon in Japan. The video showcased a plethora of new monsters that players can look forward to collecting. As for the Pokémon designs, well, its kind of a mixed bag. Let’s take a look at the video.

If you couldn’t catch all of the information flying at you (there was quite a bit), here are some of the highlights:

PokemonSMtrailer8

First, there is the electric/fairy-type, Kapu-Kokeko. I would assume this is one is tied to the story in some way, judging by the little cutscene at the beginning of the trailer.

PokemonSMtrailer7

PokemonSMtrailer6

Next is the bug/electric-type Denjimushi and its evolution, Kuwaganon. Odd-looking thing, isn’t it?

PokemonSMtrailer5

My favorite is this one, the Jijiiron. It is a derpy yet majestic normal/dragon-type.

PokemonSMtrailer4

In the “what on earth?” category is this water/psyhic-type, Hagigishiri. My guess is that the design is supposed to invoke fish native to Hawaii while making monstrous.

PokemonSMtrailer3

This is the bug/fairy-type, Aburii. Not much I can say on this one. A bee-mosquito hybrid?

PokemonSMtrailer2

This round, ball of cuteness is the electric/steel-type togedemaru.

PokemonSMtrailer1

The final highlight is Zygarde’s new form, dubbed “Perfect Form.”

Wow! That is a lot of new stuff to digest. What is your opinion of the new Pokémon shown today?

It may not have been long ago when Nintendo announced that Yo-kai Watch 2 would be hitting North America this September but over in Japan, it isn’t too long before Yo-kai Watch 3: Sushi and Tempura are released. As the games edge closer to their launch on July 16, more information is revealed.

The latest feature to be highlighted is “My Nyan,” which will give gamers the ability to customize their own cat Yo-kai (think Jibanyan of the first Yo-kai Watch). They will be able to not only choose its voice, face, and outfit but also what yo-kai tribe the kitty will belong to.

While the two versions of Yo-Kai Watch 3 are not currently announced for North America, I certainly hope that they will eventually make the jump overseas. What do you think of this feature? Let us know in the comments!

Yacht Club Games isn’t done with Shovel Knight yet! The team is busy preparing the next two campaigns for the game starring members of the Order of No Quarter, King Knight and Specter Knight. A short video posted on their twitter feed gives a taste of what to expect from King Knight:

Much like the previously released Plague Knight campaign, beating the original game is not required to unlock the additional characters. Simply inputting a code (which, in the past, Yacht Club Games has shared on social media) at the title screen after the corresponding update will do the job.

The tweet also led to a discussion of additional updates that were part of the Kickstarter‘s stretch goals, specifically Gender Swap Mode. It looks like progress is continuing smoothly on that front as well and fans can expect to gain access to the mode with one of the campaign updates. It is always nice to see a Kickstarter campaign make good on its promises.

What do you think of this news? Will you be revisiting the world of Shovel Knight once again? Let us know in the comments!

It’s another month, which means it’s time for the next Mythical Pokemon to become available for download on your copies of Pokemon XYOmega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire.

Making its debut as a special egg that could be transferred from the excellent Pokemon Ranger to copies of Pokemon Diamond and Pokemon Pearl, Manaphy is a water type Pokemon that fits a similar role as Mew, Celebi and Jirachi before it. Manaphy’s signature attack, Heart Swap, allows it to switch stat increases and decreases with its opponent, allowing it to absorb any boosts its foe might have built up over the course of the battle. Its ability, Hydration, removes any negative status effects it receives at the end of each turn in the rain, giving it even more of a benefit on top of the attack boost rain already provides to water types. As the only Legendary Pokemon to be able to breed, pairing it with Ditto is still the only way to obtain Phione, a standalone Pokemon that does not evolve into its parent species. As a Pokemon of more than one firsts, Manaphy is also the first Mythical Pokemon to have to share the spotlight with a group of other Mythical types, being somewhat overshadowed by the eventual release of Shaymin, Arceus, and last month’s featured Pokemon, Darkrai.

Despite this, Manaphy has still made multiple appearances since its debut, being featured in Super Smash Bros. Brawl  and 3DS/Wii U as a rare Pokemon that uses Heart Swap to switch which player controls which character mid match. Its movie, Pokemon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea, has been digitally remastered and made available to download alongside Pokemon: Lucario and the Mystery of Mew, and is rounded out by the release of the Manaphy Pokemon TCG set, which comes with two Pokemon Generations booster packs, a promotional Manaphy card, and a collectible pin.

This has been a big week for Pokemon, with Sun and Moon details showing off its new legendaries and Pokedex. Check out the Manaphy trailer below to keep up on all the releases featuring the water type, and check back with more details on #Pokemon20 as they’re available.

Japanese gamers may be awaiting the third installment to Yo-kai Watch but fans in North America will finally get their hands on Yo-kai Watch 2 on September 30. Readers may remember the original getting high marks in our review and hopefully this next round will follow in its footsteps.

There are a few changes this time, however. For starters, taking a page from Pokémon‘s playbook, there are now two versions of the game, each containing different rare yo-kai to befriend. The subtitles for those games are, um, unconventional. Okay, they are straight-up weird as in we-probably-should-have-thought-this-over-more weird. The two options for fans to chose between are Bony Spirits and Fleshy Souls. Ridiculous naming choices aside, the game will also have a different setting. Your character will be making a visit to your hometown of Springdale as it was 100 years in the past. Prepare for some time travel shenanigans!

In support of the upcoming titles, Hasbro will sell an updated model of Yo-kai Watch to match the new game’s design along with new Medals called “Yo-motion Yo-kai Medals.” Custom accessories, large plushes, and electronic figures are also in the works. And TCG fans will be excited to learn that a Yo-kai Watch Trading Card Game is coming their way.

It looks the Zygarde Mystery Gift distribution will end sooner than anticipated. The current online download, which is available for Pokémon X/Y as well as Alpha Sapphire/ Omega Ruby, will end on May 8 in North America. But, don’t despair; the Order Pokémon will be replaced with two very special subsequent downloads: shiny Xerneas and shiny Yveltal.

Xerneas will be available first, running from May 11 to May 17, with Yveltal taking its place from May 20 to May 26. Like Zygarde, these Pokémon can be acquired by selecting the “Mystery Gift” setting on the title screen and choosing the “Get over Internet” option. No need to get a code from a video game store.

Xerneas will arrive with the move set: Geomancy, Moonblast, Aromatherapy, and Focus Blast. Yveltal will have Oblivion Wing, Sucker Punch, Dark Pulse, and Foul Play. Both will be level 100.

No word yet on European distribution.

Nintendo’s famous mustachioed plumber has headlined so many games, I wouldn’t be able to list them all in one or two breaths. A share of those titles are role-playing games and the latest addition, Mario and Luigi: Paper Jam for the Nintendo 3DS, attempts to build on its predecessors by making use of new in-game mechanics as well as hardware functionality.

3DS_MarioLuigiPJ_JanRPG_SCRN_09

3DS_MarioLuigiPJ_JanRPG_SCRN_07

The game’s plot focuses on the aftermath of the citizens from the world of Paper Mario (another fine RPG series, not counting Super Star) being spread higgledy-piggledy throughout the Mushroom Kingdom. This, as you might imagine, causes some issues. Two-dimensional duplicates of baddies like Bowser and Kamek now run amok. Thankfully, they are joined by Paper Mario, Paper Peach, more Paper Toads than you can shake a glue stick at.

Piranha_Smash

3DS_MarioLuigiPJ_NovemberDirect_SCRN_02_bmp_jpgcopy

With Paper Mario on your team, you have control of three characters rather than the usual two. This is all well and good for the overworld; Paper Mario’s flat frame can be manipulated to get around many of the obstacles created by the terrain. But in battle, it feels like too much.

3DS_MarioLuigiPJ_JanRPG_SCRN_01

In the Mario and Luigi series, battles are a very hands-on experience. Not only do you need to put in the correct button command when prompted on the screen (which buttons and such vary with each character) but you are expected to dodge/counter your enemies’ oncoming assaults. With just characters to manage, it was fine but with the addition of Paper Mario, keeping track of who is being targeted and when can be tough.

3DS_MarioLuigiPJ_JanRPG_SCRN_08

3DS_MarioLuigiPJ_NovemberDirect_SCRN_09_bmp_jpgcopy

One new part of battles I did enjoy was the additional of the Battle Cards. You gain access to your first set a few hours into the game. Using the cards during an enemy encounter can cause effects like damage to certain enemies, boosting stats, or even increasing the rewards your reap post-battle.

The Battle Cards are also where the amiibo functionality is. When you use a special card item and then scan a compatible amiibo, you are granted a special Battle Card unique to the character the amiibo is based on. These Battle Cards cannot be obtained any other way. What I thought was nifty was that those special Battle Cards are stored on the amiibo, not the game save, and you can unlock more than one Battle Card per amiibo (24 to be exact). Simply scanning your desired amiibo during a battle will allow you access to the Battle Cards stored on it. The icing on the cake are the illustrations on these special cards. I only saw Yoshi’s and Bowser’s but, judging from those two, I can tell you that the card contain images from the entire range of the character’s history (note the Yarn Yoshi from Yoshi’s Woolly World along with Yoshi’s Island illustrations in the screenshot above).

3DS_MarioLuigiPJ_NovemberDirect_SCRN_05_bmp_jpgcopy

Besides the issues with battles, the portions I liked the least were surrounding the giant papercraft. I can’t tell which part I disliked more: catching all those Paper Toads required to upgrade the thing or the actual battles. Actually, I take that back; it was the Toad part. Let’s take them one at a time. Rounding up the Paper Toads are set up as missions in the Lakitu Info Center. These quests are repetitive and just not fun. It would be one thing if they were “side quests” but they are obligatory.

And why do you need to collect a bunch of Paper Toads? To have them make these giant papercraft that your team fights with against Bowser’s own giant papercraft creation. They play like arena tank battles. Your attacks are charged by standing on a base and performing a little rhythm mini-game. Because that makes perfect sense. I don’t think I would have minded it as much as I did if they didn’t take so dang long. It takes several rounds to get to the Boss and even then, physical getting near the enemy takes a chunk of time. Papercraft Kamek’s teleporting especially drove me nuts.
3DS_MarioLuigiPJ_JanRPG_SCRN_03

I give Mario and Luigi: Paper Jam a 3/5. It had with potential but ultimately fell flat. It isn’t a bad game by any means, but it could have been awesome had they left certain features out.

Note: This review is based on a promotional copy of the game provided by Nintendo.

UPDATE: The English name of the pokemon has been revealed–Magearna.  Specific details on the pokemon has been revealed as well, as indicated below:

“The newly discovered Mythical Pokémon Magearna will appear in the next Pokémon movie, scheduled for release later this year. Known as the Artificial Pokémon, Magearna has a metallic body and was created by humans 500 years ago.

Magearna
Category: Artificial Pokémon
Height: 3’03”
Weight: 177.5 lbs.

In this latest Pokémon full-length feature film, a mysterious force binds Ash to the Mythical Pokémon Volcanion when it falls from the sky. Volcanion can’t get away, and Ash is dragged along as it continues on its mission. They arrive in a city of cogs and gears, where a corrupt minister has stolen the ultimate invention: the Artificial Pokémon Magearna, created 500 years ago. The minister plans to use Magearna’s mysterious power to take control of the mechanical kingdom. Can Ash and Volcanion work together to rescue Magearna? One of the greatest battles in Pokémon history is about to unfold!”

This isn’t the first time that a previously detailed name for a pokemon has been changed, such as Mewtwo Y, which was originally translated to “Eclair Mewtwo” in English.

On the cover of Corocoro, a popular Japanese publication, a new Pokémon has just been revealed!

Corocoro is often used to get breaking news to the gamers of Japan, so it is most likely an official reveal.

The name of the pokemon is Magiana, which is described as a Pokémon that was man-made over 500 years ago and is being featured in a new movie alongside the legendary Pokémon Volcanion.  Volcanion is a Pokémon that is centered around the theme of steam, and is the first Pokémon ever to have a Fire/Water typing.

magiana

I can’t help but wonder, and many friends agree–doesn’t it look a little… familiar?  I could describe it with words, but I’ll let the images below do the talking:

diancieklinklang

fusiondance

If you’re unfamiliar with the Pokémon above, the one on the left is Diancie and the one on the right is Klinklang.  Diancie is a rare mutation of the Pokémon Carbink–it’s a very unique pokemon because while Carbink is labelled as a normal Pokémon, so to speak, the mutations are so rare that Diancie is considered a legendary Pokémon, and not even an evolution of Carbink.  Diancie also has its own mega evolution.  Klinklang is the third evolution of the Pokémon Klink, and is classified as a “Gear Pokémon.”  In either case a fusion Pokémon has never existed, but it’s always fun to speculate about these things.

It also has fans wondering if this Pokémon is included in the current generation 6 roster (X/Y/OR/AS), or is the start of a reveal of the next generation of Pokémon?  Every generation has had a “Mew equivalent”, namely a super rare small Pokémon that is only attainable through special events, and such a Pokémon has not yet been announced for this generation (previous ones, for example, are Mew, Celebi, Jirachi, etc.).

What do you all think?  Is the new Pokémon a Dragonball Z style fusion?  Is it the start of a new generation?  Please let us know!

Remember that creepy CGI Pikachu that was shown a couple of years back as a weird tech demo alongside Pokken Tournament?

PikachuYeah, that one. Well, it turns out that tech demo was indeed intended to become a full length game. Now before you start having nightmares about this thing starring in its own game, it’s important to note that the CG looks miles better than what was originally shown.

Titled Detective Pikachu: Birth Of A New Duo the game will be heading to the 3DS at an unknown date. Check out the mysterious trailer for it down below. A user by the name solarsaturn9 was kind enough to translate the trailer.

What do you think of Detective Pikachu?

It looks like North American gamers awaiting Bravely Second: End Layer for the Nintendo 3DS (plus the 2Ds and New Nintendo 3DS) will only have to wait about three more months to get their hands on the title, when it releases on April 15. The Japanese role-playing game is the sequel to Bravely Default.

And much like its predecessor, the title will also see a Collector’s Edition (shown below) available for purchase, also releasing on April 15 . It’s suggested retail price is $69.99. What’s inside this special package? Collectors can look forward to a 10-song soundtrack, a 250-page art book, and the game (of course). Sadly, we will not be getting the mini-figure of Agnes that comes bundled with the European and Japanese Collector’s Editions.

Want to get a head-start on your journey? A special demo, entitled Bravely Second: End Layer – The Ballad of the Three Musketeers, will make its way to the eShop prior to the title’s release. The demo will feature a unique side story not found in the full game. And just as importantly, StreetPass tags and certain other bonuses acquired from the demo will transfer over to the full game.

If you have a particular fondness for the way Nintendo’s Rockefeller Center-based Nintendo World Store is now, you had best visit before it closes for a remodel on January 19. The store will reopen on February 19 under a new name, Nintendo NY, and will feature an overhauled look.

The updated interior will have a 15-foot gaming screen, brand new demo units for both the Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS, and additional surprise elements. The store’s new tagline, “Where everyone comes to play,” will be emblazoned on a bronze coin at the store’s entrance.

The grand opening weekend for Nintendo NY, February 19 through 21, will host special activities, giveaways, plus the chance to see costumed versions of Mario and Luigi. Collectors take note: several exclusive souvenirs will be on sale this weekend only, such as limited editions shirts featuring Link or Mario.

Who’s planning on paying a visit to the updated Nintendo NY when it opens? I know I wish I had a plane ticket!

I’ve heard a myriad of people liken Level-5’s latest RPG, Yo-kai Watch, to the ever-popular Pokémon franchise. And looking at superficially, I suppose I could see what they mean. The game begins with a pre-teen hero in a small town (whose gender you can select at the start). And yes, there are over 200 “monsters,” or rather Yo-Kai, available to do battle in your stead during the fighting sequences. But if you look even the slightest bit deeper, you’ll find a journey that stands tall on its own merits.

3DS_YokaiWatch_E3_SCRN_09_bmp_jpgcopy

The plot of Yo-Kai Watch is far more light-hearted than most that I’ve come across this year (especially as far as RPG’s go). Your hero, we learn, has a love of bug-catching (and a bout of laziness) and after one particular outing near the local mountain shrine, comes across a rusty old gachapon machine (the ones where you insert some currency and out pops a totally Pokeball-looking capsule) begging you to “feed it.” Being the curious young person that you are, the hero inserts a coin and, in return, is rewarded with the self-proclaimed “Yo-Kai butler,” Whisper. The cartoony ghost creature then gifts them with the Yo-Kai Watch, a device that allows the hero to see and befriend wandering Yo-Kai.

N3DS_YokaiWatch_092915_SCRN_03_bmp_jpgcopy

The soundtrack is also charming, if somewhat forgettable. The only melody I can summon from memory is the catchy battle theme. The other issue is the lack of musical variety in the game. I was, however, thoroughly impressed with how many soundbites there were for the Yo-Kai during battle. When using techniques and special moves or even just switching them into the field, I was frequently treated with a phrase from the user.

The locales in the game, for the most part, have a Japanese aesthetic as one would expect given that the game seemingly takes place in Japan. I particularly liked that every house has a genkan next to the front door to leave your shoes. It is little touches like that show how much love was put into this title. I loved how Level-5 chose to make the locations more welcoming; no spooky, blood-stained walls or creepy dolls here.

Like many role-playing games, you have access to a only a small area towards the start of the game and your world expands as the story progresses. And while Yo-Kai Watch‘s map may seem smaller than other titles out there, I didn’t mind. There are so many nooks and crannies to explore in every section of the town that I found myself spending hours in one neighborhood, simply exploring.

3DS_YokaiWatch_E3_SCRN_03_bmp_jpgcopy

The main mechanics of Yo-Kai Watch center around finding and befriending Yo-Kai. You may encounter Yo-Kai in a story-related event, during a side quest, or simply from looking in hiding places like under cars and vending machines or in rivers and trees. They may even be found out in the open in certain areas. Engaging a Yo-Kai involves holding the cursor, or lens, over the hiding creature until the Yo-Kai Watch’s meter fills up. This may sound easy enough but later in the game, those Yo-Kai move quickly and sporadically and, if the Yo-Kai evades the cursor long enough, the meter will drop and eventually reset. I found that stylus worked best later on but you can get by using the analog nub to control the cursor for at least the first few hours.

3DS_YokaiWatch_E3_SCRN_06_bmp_jpgcopy

3DS_YokaiWatch_E3_SCRN_12_bmp_jpgcopy

The battle system is a fun mix of smart AI-influenced teammates and special actions, usually involving the stylus. Those actions could initiate your yo-kai’s special “Soultimate” ability by tapping bouncing orbs, tracing shapes, or spinning a circle. Similar activities are involved in “purifying” your Yo-Kai of status ailments. If you want to sit back and let the AI take over, but you don’t want the fight to drag on, a simple press of the “X” button puts the battle in fast forward (this function can be used even if you intended to use the stylus as well).

3DS_YokaiWatch_E3_SCRN_10_bmp_jpgcopy

Battles also serve as a means to recruit Yo-Kai. Making friends with them post-battle can be influenced by gifting them their favorite foods during the fight. Certain Yo-Kai skills also increase the likelihood of a successful recruitment. This feature added another layer of strategy because figuring out what type of food to give them was at times puzzling. Sure, it stood to reason that kappa prefer vegetables like cucumber, but figuring out many Yo-Kai’s preferences were based solely on trial and error.

N3DS_YokaiWatch_092915_SCRN_06_bmp_jpgcopy

Yo-Kai Watch is one meaty game, chock-full of side quests and NPC requests. Taking on these extra challenges will earn you experience points, money, items, and occasionally a new Yo-Kai companion. The menus for keeping track of tasks is similar to one of Level-5’s other RPGs, Fantasy Life, with tabs for each quest/request which display a quest summary and your progress towards your goal.

N3DS_YokaiWatch_092915_SCRN_10_bmp_jpgcopy

The one aspect that I didn’t particularly like was Terror Time. It’s a random nighttime event that send the hero into an alternate world, filled with a giant Oni and their smaller lackeys. You’re forced into a stressful round of hide and seek as you make your way to the zone’s exit. Good luck getting those treasure chests hidden in the area. I have only managed to collect two and both times, I was later caught by the boss and beaten. Thankfully, this does not lead to a game over but rather starts you back at your bedroom. It is more an annoyance than anything else.

To sum up, I give Yo-Kai Watch for the Nintendo 3DS my seal of approval. Weak music selection and Terror Time aggravation aside, the title is one that I have enjoyed playing more than 90 percent of the other releases this year. I’ve recently switched it to be “My Favorite Game” on my 3DS profile on My Nintendo, so if that doesn’t speak of the quality of content, I don’t know what does!

Yo-Kai Watch scores a cool 4.5/5! Will you be picking it up? Be sure to let us know in the comments below!

Releasing on the Nintendo 3DS on November 6th (just a couple of days to go), Level-5’s YO-KAI Watch centers around a young protagonist and the huge, diverse cast of monster-like beings that join their team. Like the Pokémon series, it is a game that relies on the player caring about (or at least finding something to like) in the minions that they send into battle, be it Pocket Monster or YO-KAI.

But, what are YO-KAI? Here’s how Nintendo explains them:

YO-KAI cannot be seen by the human eye, but hide everywhere! It’s why you feel the urge to bust out in a dance in the middle of the classroom or why some mornings you simply can’t pry yourself out of bed. Hundreds of these spooky, sometimes cute and usually mischievous YO-KAI secretly inhabit our world.

Without further ado, let’s meet five of the YO-KAI you will see in the game!

Jibanyan

2144496c-f053-44d8-bd19-0252e10e72b3

If you have been following any of the trailers, Jibanyan should be familiar to you. This normally lazy feline likes to use passing trucks as punching bags when training. That probably isn’t good for business.

Tattletell

ddadd5c2-a145-4ac9-a0d4-d97a22ec8bec

Resembling an elderly woman, this Yo-kai is responsible for all those times you spilled a secret you were supposed to be keeping. We’ve all been there.

Walkappa

9b683213-4239-4534-999b-d81592e43283

Walkappa is a land-based version of the kappa Yo-kai. If you get the sudden urge to swim, this dude is to blame. That little thermos around his neck is for pouring onto the top of his head.

Shmoopie

3992e7c0-e19c-4349-9873-369ab9b14454

While this Yo-kai may look like a toy that fell off a Sanrio truck, it is actually the one responsible for when you are overwhelmed with a feeling of cuteness. Just look at those eyes; they’re so sweet that they could give you cavities. D’aww!

Snotsolong

78a72d06-d814-46ed-9929-8d5e78e8d1ad

This YO-KAI must be pretty busy right around now. It gives you those non-stop runny noses that just don’t seem to end. Looks like it is suffering from a similar issue. Anyone have a handkerchief to lend this poor thing?

You can meet many, many more of these YO-KAI in YO-KAI Watch when it releases November 6th in stores and on the Nintendo 3DS eShop.

Can’t wait that long? There’s a sizable demo available to download now in the eShop.

Tried the demo out already? Are you planning on picking up YO-KAI Watch? Let us know in the comments below!

Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer hit the United States last September and Nintendo is doing its best to make sure that we don’t forget about the addictive title. Between a very special SpotPass visitor and the next round of the Happy Home Network Design Contest, they’ve just revealed a bunch of new items to collect!

Let’s talk about the SpotPass content first. Should the SpotPass feature be enabled, a Felyne from Capcom’s Monster Hunter series will make a visit to your town as a potential client. The character model is based of off  the design from Monster Hunter Poka Poka Airu Village, a Nintendo 3DS game that takes place in a Felyne village. The Felyne’s home request unlocks a set of Monster Hunter-themed items, including the porcine Poogie, a BBQ spit, and the Quest Board. This content became available on Monday, November 2, and it’s unknown when it will no longer be downloadable.

November’s edition of the Happy Home Network Design Contest is themed around the concept of “A Battle Between Giants.” Those that participate in the competition are required to use a Robot Hero and an Inflatable Resetti in their design. You will get to keep these awe-inspiring pieces of furniture upon completing the challenge. Luckily enough, you don’t have to win; just compete! Trying your best would be awesome too, though. Who wouldn’t want to be featured on the network for the whole world to admire?

Procrastinators, it’s that time again!

If you were hoping to grab a shiny Rayquaza by soft resetting and battling it over and over again in your copy of Pokemon Omega Ruby / Alpha Sapphire, you probably figured out by now that it’s not possible this time around. Luckily, Game Freak and Nintendo began distributing a black clad shiny version through Mystery Gift last month in North America, giving every trainer in the West a chance to wield its power with its stylish variant color. But like all Mystery Gifts, it’s only available for a limited time… and that time’s almost up!

Coming equipped with its signature Dragon Ascent attack, this powerful move allows the ozone dragon to Mega Evolve into its most powerful form without a stone, freeing up its item slot for even better boosts and strategy. No wonder he was put on the ban list so quick! If you haven’t already, you have until about 9 PM PST this evening to head to your menu and grab this legendary monster, or he’ll likely be gone forever… Or until you can buy an Action Replay.

Have you grabbed yours yet? Or do you have any counters to fight against it that you’d like to share? Sound off below!

During last month’s E3, Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime said the public wouldn’t hear anything concerning the Nintendo NX until E3 2016. While fans may have to wait 11 months until they get an official reveal of Nintendo’s next platform, we may have learned what games may be coming to the NX.

DragonQuestX_2

During the Square Enix live stream event this morning, Dragon Quest XI was announced for both PlayStation 4 and Nintendo 3DS. While the PS4 version will obviously boast the better graphics (it’s built on the Unreal Engine), the 3DS version will have full 3D graphics on the top screen, while the bottom screen showcases retro Dragon Quest graphics–resembling those of the earliest games in the series. Before the end of the presentation, Square Enix revealed that Dragon Quest XI and Dragon Quest X were coming to Nintendo NX. It didn’t take long for the news to appear on gaming sites all over the web, and it caused Square Enix to back peddle just a bit.

Earlier this afternoon, Square Enix provided IGN with a statement, clarifying that Dragon Quest X and Dragon Quest XI were under consideration and had no further information at the moment.

With the confirmation/non-confirmation of Dragon Quest for Nintendo’s next platform, what other franchises would you want to see on the NX?

Being Vice President of the world sounds like it would be a pretty sweet gig. Everyone has to do what you say, you can boss everyone around, and it would make you the most powerful person on the planet (aside from the President, of course.) But between all the unearned vacations, publicity events and empty promises, you just might have to work on occasion, especially when it comes to saving the planet that elected you.

Citizens of Earth does just this, putting players in control of the newly elected VP in a turn based RPG seeped in classic gaming roots. During his first vacation, (the day after he was elected,) the bane of the Western world in the form of protesters show up at his door. After getting his mother and brother to get rid of them, it’s clear that there’s more going on than simple political discourse. When stop signs, coffee machines, and bears made of honey come to life and begin attacking the adoring public, it’s up to the honorable vice leader to set things right.

As someone of such high importance however, you can’t expect him to get his hands dirty when it comes to the actual Earth defending, which is where the loyal citizens come in. Using his expert campaigning skills, up to 40 different characters can be recruited, each with unique jobs, skills and combat abilities that help in and outside of battle. While simple, the turn based battle system finds a unique way to put these skills to good use. Using three party members at a time to fight, each has two basic attack types. Standard attacks can be performed without penalty, while building up one point of energy needed for special moves. These special moves need a certain amount of energy to initiate, but when they typically deal out huge damage, status effects, or healing bonuses for your team, it’s clear that the cost is well worth it.

Aside from the energy system though, this might sound like your typical RPG conventions that have been done to death for close to three decades. What makes Citizens of Earth stand out that makes it a must play for a long time role playing aficionado? For starters, each member gives bonus stats to whoever they’re fighting with. Adding depth to the level system, each character can be customized to a degree by having the right team members with them to fit the stat you want to raise.

In addition, the experience earned unlocks more than just stat points and new attacks. EXP earned in battle also goes towards upgrading the citizen’s talent, often related to their day job. If you recruit the baker for example, his shop will have better healing items as he becomes stronger. The pilot can teleport you to a larger variety of areas. The cop gives you extra bounties to hunt. Get the picture? When you consider that there are 40 citizens to level, part of the fun is seeing how their abilities can help you both in and out of combat.

Such a daunting task sounds like it can be overwhelming, and honestly, it was at first. It’s disheartening seeing your current party level up so high, then try to switch them out, only to have the newbies be too weak to compete. As the game progresses though, this problem becomes alleviated thanks to a few lenient features the game has included. First, the VP can restart a battle and change up the party, allowing him to throw in a strong party member to help boost the weaker ones. Second, KO’d party members still gain EXP, so having to scramble for your revive items isn’t as important, especially when they gain all of their health upon leveling up. Lastly, once the Teacher is recruited, unused party members can be put into class, leveling them up over time. It still can be a little more time consuming than I would have liked, but it’s also completely optional.

Aside from the game play, Citizens of Earth stands out even more with its unique presentation. Its humor, off the wall enemies, (smiling cops? Bubble Bees? Stop Vines?), and 2D navigation with enemies on the map are highly reminiscent of Earthbound, which is completed by a nearly fully voiced script and a political cartoon inspired art style. The only thing more charming than the hammy delivery of everything the VP does, is the bright, vibrant world filled with on screen enemies, (that can be ambushed and instantly killed if you’re strong enough,) potential party members and NPCs that bring the world to life. If nothing else, this title will surely make you smile across its story mode.

Yet, its biggest shortcoming brings it down pretty hard, which is the overall speed of the game. My enthusiasm to compete the adventure took a dive after experiencing how slow everything moves. Battles take a long time to start, which isn’t helped by enemies that either absorb attacks, constantly call for reinforcements, or completely heal, making me dread fighting certain enemies. Imagine fighting basic enemies for close to 10 minutes because you want your weaker teammates to level up, but the enemy keeps healing when on the verge of death? Making the campaign sour even more are the constant load times, slowing the game to a crawl. When entering buildings begins to feel tedious, it becomes an obvious issue.

Yes, Citizens of Earth won’t reinvent the wheel, but that’s not what it’s trying to do. Serving as a delightful throwback to some of the greatest RPGs of yesteryear, it does enough to inject its own style, personality and unique mechanics to make it stand out to even the most jaded gamer. Even still, the slow pace of the fights, their generally basic mechanics, and constant loading times cause the VP to fall from grace. Even still, if you’re in need of an old school RPG with modern sensibilities, you can’t go wrong with this ticket.

Final Score: 3.5/5

Briefly: Nintendo just released a new trailer for next month’s (I know right) The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D, this time around showing off the different masks that Link will be wearing in game, and showing off just how well the game has translated to the 3DS.

As someone who has never experienced Majora’s Mask (I believe it’s the only Zelda title that I haven’t played), I couldn’t be more excited to get my hands on this one. It looks like an extremely unique experience, and the fact that I can play it on the go means that I’m going to power through it.

Take a look at the new trailer below, and be sure to keep your eyes on Geekscape (and your ears on Geekscape Games) for more The Legend of Zelda news! This one hits your (new or old) 3DS on February 13th!

Briefly: We finally got a release date for the 3DS version of The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask during today’s Nintendo Direct (here’s our recap, and look for a lot more talk in this week’s episode of Geekscape Games), and it’s coming a lot sooner than we originally thought.

Yesterday’s rumours turned out to be true, and Majora’s Mask will launch alongside the new 3DS XL on February 13th. Nintendo today debuted a new trailer for the game, and as someone who hasn’t experienced Majora’s Mask before, I really can’t wait to get my hands on it.

Take a look at the trailer below, and let us know if you’ll be picking this one up! Were you lucky enough to pick up the limited edition?

Briefly: Nintendo fans have been waiting patiently to find out just when the newer, faster 3DS models would be coming to North America, and an apparent leaked Gamestop ad has revealed that the new iteration may be coming sooner than we thought:

Gamestop

If the ad (via NeoGAF) is real, it states that the new 3DS (or at least the XL model) will be available on February 13th (just in time for my birthday). What’s really interesting here is that the left side of the ad also shows the 3DS version of Majora’s Mask, which I really didn’t think we’d be seeing that early.

Only time will tell if the ad was real, and by time, I mean the Nintendo Direct presentation that Nintendo has scheduled for tomorrow. Keep your eyes on Geekscape for the confirmation (and keep your ears on the next episode of Geekscape Games, as I’m sure we’ll have a lot to talk about).

Will you be picking up the new version? Sound out below!

Needless to say, many Zelda fans are smiling ear to ear. Check out the trailer and screenshots for the game below! The game is currently slated for a Spring 2015 release.

That’s right my fellow Hunters, the much anticipated Monster Hunter 4 is getting an Ultimate release in the West! The series head producer Ryozo Tsujimoto outlines it all below!

If you’re new to the whole Monster Hunter series let me bring you up to speed. Monster Hunter is one of the biggest franchises Capcom has, and has become one of the must have titles for the portable market. It takes place in a fantasy world where players, well hunt monsters. The big attraction to the game is the sheer size of some of the beasts you fight. It also forces players to rely on their skills and not an arbitrary leveling system. If you’re a pro hunter you can kill some high rank monsters with starting rank gear. Repeating hunts over and over again in the hopes of getting those rare drops from the monsters never feels like work, the grind is very enjoyable.

You can get your hands on Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate sometime in 2015 for the Nintendo 3DS. Chances are a WiiU release will be quickly following.

Late Thursday evening on Miiverse, Smash. Bros. producer Masahiro Sakurai officially announced King Dedede’s return as a playable character in the next installment of Smash Bros. for Wii U and for both Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo 2DS.

While no news or insight was given to an updated moveset for the Dream Land King, the official Smash Bros. website has provided a fairly robust gallery showcasing King Dedede in a number of poses with other members of the Smash Bros. roster.

Are there any particular abilities you wish to see added to King Dedede’s moveset? Let us know in the comments below!

Pokemon trainers like myself are eagerly counting the days until December 27th. This date will be remembered as the day that the world of Pokemon X and Y changed forever. For on this day of days, Pokemon Bank and Pokemon Transporter will arrive on the eShop, letting us import our companions from Black, Black 2, White and White 2 versions, which potentially includes everything from Ruby and Sapphire onwards. You’d be crazy not to download it, but if you were on the fence, (and why would you be?) it looks like the pot has just been sweetened.

Every person who downloads Bank and Transporter will receive Celebi, an event exclusive Pokemon who debuted as #251 back in Gold and Silver. The grass/psychic type has been a fan favorite for years, including yours truly who still considers it the best of the event exclusive series.

Celebi will be available until September 30th, which is plenty of time to gather the $4.99 necessary for the annual fee for the storage service. Remember, once the service releases, a 30 day free trial will be given to those who download it before January 31st, so there’s little reason why online shouldn’t be flooded with the things come release.

While I love Celebi, I’ll be “that guy” and complain about a free giveaway. I have to point out that it’s been given out so often that this feels a little unnecessary, especially when I can’t remember the last time Jirachi was distributed… unless they’re saving it for something big in the future. Hoenn confirmed!?!?

Ahem… anyway, as mentioned, Bank and Transporter will release on December 27th. Confused about any of it? The trailer below gives you all the juicy details on how it will work. We have nine days to catch em all! Let’s get to it!
