As most of us know by now, Japanese RPG’s can get pretty weird. Last year alone, we took a return trip to a world where game console goddesses saved the world from the disgruntled spirit of the Sega Dreamcast, and became pop stars who defended Tokyo from the evils of the entertainment industry. But I can comfortably say that I have yet to play anything like Mary Skelter: Nightmares, a new dungeon crawling RPG by Compile Heart that tasks you with leading a party full of gothic lolita versions of our favorite fairy tale heroines to freedom as they fight their way through a living prison. Except they’re hardly the prancing, singing princesses you might be picturing, because their insatiable blood lust leads them to go wild as they soak up the blood of their enemies. What’s the best way to bring them back to their senses? Naturally, you lick them clean.

Trust me when I say that you’re going to to need to get used to the trying act of making these attractive anime girls lick each other, because your success in battle directly correlates with how close they get to losing control. Doing damage, landing critical hits and finishing off strong opponents leads to larger blood splatters. Once one of the girls absorbs a certain amount of blood, they transform into their most powerful state, greatly improving their damage and abilities in the process. If that blood continues to pile up however, the girl will eventually go berserk, forcing her to lose all control and attack friend and foe alike. Licking has the added benefit of healing the affected party member, but when the rest of your girls are tied up with casting support spells, attacking enemy monsters or taking advantage of elemental weaknesses, Jack, your character, has a special weapon that can calm the girls down instantly. Don’t draw too much attention to him though, because if he’s out of commission, there will be no one to control the girls, leading to a game over.

Monsters and blood aren’t the only dangers in the prison, because the prison itself serves as both a lethal opponent and a helpful ally depending on the situation. Each area in the prison is guarded by a boss that hangs around outside the prison walls. These cheaters can attack you from the outside without allowing you to fight back, forcing the team to be on their toes as they dodge incoming hazards during exploration, all while avoiding the traps that the prison itself holds. The benefit however, is that some traps can be used to your benefit. Activating the right ones at the right time can damage the boss, bringing them down to your level and allowing you to battle them with a more traditional turn based system. As you play, the dungeon will also have its own set of desires that you’re asked to fulfill for combat bonuses. For example, if its feeling lustful, continuously licking will satisfy its need for waifu on waifu action. And you thought the showers were the only place that you had to worry about perverts in jail.

What made Mary Skelter stand out to me more than anything was its ability to keep you on your toes at all times. I’ve played plenty of first person dungeon crawlers where traveling becomes a chore after awhile since you can only look at the same walls for so long before it gets old. This game doesn’t give you the chance to get worn out out since you’re constantly under attack. With its unique mechanics, the ability to take characters like Alice, Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella and customize their classes and abilities to make your custom fairy tale fighting squad, being able to de-level your characters to power up low level classes, and the focus on the dungeon as its own entity, and its easy to see why such an interesting take on the genre has piqued my interest. Besides, haven’t you always wanted to taste Snow White?

Mary Skelter: Nightmare will release on the PS Vita this summer.

When it comes to Nintendo products, you know we’re all still hopelessly addicted to amiibo, the interactive figurines that have cornered entire sections of our homes. Like a pusher in the center of New Donk City trying to set us up with our next fix, the company had all of their new toys to life characters on display ahead of their 2017 releases.

This hodgepodge of plastic run the gaming gamut. From Bayonetta to Final Fantasy‘s Cloud, the just announced Tiki and Chrom from Fire Emblem, Samus and a Metroid, the four Champions from Breath of the Wild, and Bowser in a pimp suit, it’s hard not to see how there’s something for everyone when it comes to yanking those $15 out of your pocket. And those Link’s. So many Link’s…

Check out our gallery below and check them out for yourselves! I’m hoping that we get even more surprises as the year pushes forward, (namely those Monster Hunter Stories and BoxBoy amiibo that are currently exclusive to Japan). Which ones are you looking forward to the most? Do you already have your pre-orders down? And how are you going to explain bringing a dozen more toys in the house to your roommate/parents/significant other!? Share your strategies with us below so we don’t lose all of our relationships.

Briefly: Super Mario Odyssey remains one of the coolest-looking games that was shown off at this year’s E3. The title looks to bring a ton of new ideas to the series, and the idea of being able to play such a breathtaking Mario title on the go is beyond exciting.

Since the game’s initial announcement last year , the main question about the game on every gamer’s mind was in regards to multiplayer. The Wii U’s under appreciated Super Mario 3D World and its intense, insane four-player multiplayer led to some of the most fun times I’ve ever had playing a video game.

Revealed today on Nintendo’s Treehouse livestream, the company revealed that while the game won’t have the same frantic multiplayer mode as the last title, it will feature two player co-op.

In co-op mode, Mario no longer controls Cappy. The second player will control the newly-living hat, who can fly around, attack, and control some camera movement. He (it?) is also invincible, so you can play with a non-gamer spouse or even your kids, and they won’t be able to cramp your style too much.

According to Polygon, it sound like Nintendo may have even added a few teamwork-oriented puzzles to the game to force players to work together.

In any case, while I’d love a more in-depth multiplayer mode, I’ll take what I can get, and Super Mario Odyssey looks freaking fantastic.

Rewatch the game’s E3 trailer below, and let us know if you’ll be picking this one up on October 27!

Briefly: The entire internet seemed pretty disappointed with nearly every. single. publisher at this year’s E3 Expo (save for Nintendo, surprisingly). As wrong as the internet was about the convention as a whole (it was super great and I can’t wait to buy Skyrim two more times for two distinctly different reasons), every gamer on Earth rightly jumped for joy when the once pipe-dream that was Cross Platform play suddenly became a reality.

We’ve heard a lot of talk of building walls over these past six months — but this weekend, a longstanding virtual wall humbly began to crumble, and this is a trend that I certainly hope garners even more support over time.

The wall begins to crumble, that is, unless you’re playing on Sony’s platform.

Microsoft showed off their first Cross Platform title during their Keynote on Sunday with a gorgeous new version of Minecraft. It’s trailer began by showing off the Xbox One X version’s fancy new still-very-blocky graphics and talking about massive new server upgrades, among other things, before showing off a pixellated iPad, iPhone, Nintendo Switch, and a window (for Windows, duh).

That’s right. Later this year Xbox Owners will be able to play Minecraft with their pals playing on another platform, including Nintendo’s latest console. Yep, Nintendo, that company that makes the best games, but is so conservative with online capabilities that they’re typically not even worth trying. The same Nintendo that’s never really offered any useful form of online voice chat because you shouldn’t swear at kids when they beat you at Mario Kart 8. That Nintendo.

Today, the way-more-fun-than-it-has-any-right-to-be Rocket League was revealed to be coming to the Nintendo Switch, with developer Psyonix noting that Cross-Platform play would be supported on every platform that Rocket League can be played on… again, except Playstation.

Eurogamer had the chance to speak with PlayStation global sales and marketing head Jim Ryan about cross platform play, who noted:

It’s certainly not a profound philosophical stance we have against this. We’ve done it in the past. We’re always open to conversations with any developer or publisher who wants to talk about it. Unfortunately it’s a commercial discussion between ourselves and other stakeholders, and I’m not going to get into the detail of that on this particular instance. And I can see your eyes rolling.

Sony had to have been one of the first companies to support some semblance of cross platform play, with Final Fantasy XI having PS2 and PC players playing in the same servers. Obviously I’m speculating here, but Ryan’s response almost sounds like he thinks that it’s silly that he doesn’t have a different answer to give. He mentions stakeholders specifically — could this have been shareholder led decision? In any case, I  don’t think that Sony or anyone else would have guessed that Nintendo would have been announced as a cross platform partner. Maybe the Switch truly is the rebirth of the company from a core values level.

When asked about Minecraft specifically, Ryan gives a canned, classic Nintendo answer (except that he works for Sony and Sony is totally being the Nintendo in this situation):

We’ve got to be mindful of our responsibility to our install base. Minecraft – the demographic playing that, you know as well as I do, it’s all ages but it’s also very young. We have a contract with the people who go online with us, that we look after them and they are within the PlayStation curated universe. Exposing what in many cases are children to external influences we have no ability to manage or look after, it’s something we have to think about very carefully.

This entire debacle just seems like an extremely shortsighted move from Sony — if Sony’s decision to block cross platform gaming is a monetary one, I don’t really see how it will benefit the behemoth in the long run, especially if we begin to see cross platform multiplayer become a more regular occurrence. Naturally, I’m going to pick up the version of a game that will let me play it with the most friends, which won’t be Sony’s console in most cases. On top of that, if I’m a parent looking to buy a new console for the family, am I going to choose the one that will allow my kids to play Minecraft with their iPad touting friends, or limit them to just other Playstation owners? That’s a pretty easy decision to make.

Thankfully, while it doesn’t sound like support is being actively talked about, it doesn’t sound like it’s been completely ruled out, either. Ryan closed saying “I don’t think anything is ever a done deal. Anybody who is dogmatic in that manner is typically a fool. That said, to my knowledge, there is no live conversation ongoing at the moment.”

As a gamer whose Dualshock 4 controller has a permanent place on my coffee table: Sony, we’re disappointed in you.

Which multiplayer titles would you like to see made available on all platforms? Be sure to sound out below.

2017 is looking like the year of Fire Emblem, with its multiple releases being topped off with Fire Emblem Warriors this fall. By adapting the Dynasty Warriors formula to Nintendo’s fantasy RPG, this can end up being an even better fit than the surprisingly addictive Hyrule Warriors a few years ago. Now that the first full trailer has been released however, I’m afraid that a series known for its diverse rosters might be playing it a bit too safe.

Starting two original characters who are recruiting the Fire Emblem greats to help them save their world, the trailer showed off Chrom from Awakening, female Corrin, Ryoma and Xander from Fire Emblem Fates, and Marth, the series poster child. But as anyone can tell you who’s been hooked on the mobile game over the last few months, these games have a giant cast spanning nearly 20 years. Disappointingly, as with most of the Fire Emblem content like Tokyo Mirage Sessions, Warriors is already looking like it will only focus on the newer games and the original.

So where does it leave popular protagonists like Lyn, Eirika, Ephraim and Hector? Or popular supporting cast members? While I’m almost positive that the Smash Bros characters like Roy and Ike will make the cut, while Alm and Celica have a good shot considering Echoes just released, part of the reason why I’m so excited for this game is the potential cast it can bring together. If it only focuses on the most recent games, then it’ll end up as a huge missed opportunity for the Fire Emblem faithful. I’m holding onto hope for future reveals, but I guess there’s always DLC if it doesn’t pan out.

The good news is that the trailer itself looks amazing in motion, which you can check out below! Who do you hope makes the cut in Fire Emblem Warriors? Give us your dream teams in the comments!

Since its reveal during Nintendo’s Switch presentation early this year, Xenoblade 2 has been on top of my list as THE game I need for the console long before any gameplay was shown. Now that we’ve seen it in action during the company’s E3 spotlight, it’s everything that I could have expected and more. Large, breathtaking maps? We got that! Vibrant, flashy real time combat? That’s all there. An over dramatic story trying to teach us about existentialism or something? Probably! And the voice actors are still British! Check out the trailer for yourself below and see it for yourself.

But most importantly, a sword that resembles the first game’s Monado appears. And it’s a waifu now!

As if it were ripped from the Fairy Fencer F script, the Aegis, the game’s new sword of legend, takes the form of a totally moe loli. As if trying to make you feel terrible for swinging your best girl around with reckless abandon, the game shows her human form feeling pain as the sword gets damaged.  Not one to leave you on your own, she’s also shown to simultaneously support you with magic attacks in the field as a human. How she can exist in both forms at the same time is a mystery to us all, but Holiday 2017 isn’t all that long from now. Nintendo can’t hide the truth forever!

Who’s the best sword girl? Does Aegis have potential? Is she even the best Aegis? Sound off below and share your thots!

During Nintendo’s E3 Spotlight, the company finally shed some light on what we can expect from the second DLC pack. As I predicted in our Breath of the Wild review podcast, the added content will serve as a prequel to the main game, focusing on Mipha, Revali, Daruk and Urbosa. This is exciting news on its own since we’ll be able to to explore a pre Calamity Hyrule with a whole new cast of characters, but anyone who has played through Link’s latest adventure knows that this story can’t end well.

Breath of the Wild spoilers will follow. Keep scrolling if you still haven’t played and want to be surprised!

In the main game, the only time we interacted with the Champions was when we encountered their freed spirits once their respective Divine Beast was recovered. Each one was ambushed and killed by parts of Calamity Ganon, with some added emotional weight thrown in when we get to know them through flashbacks. We got to know them just enough to understand the relationship each one shared with Link and Zelda, so to know that they died without a full picture of who they were made their final appearance feel all the more solemn despite Ganon’s defeat.

This DLC pack will change that, allowing us to fight as these warriors as they presumably march towards their ultimate fate. In every other Zelda game, you approach it knowing that somehow, some way, Link will end up saving the day. Yet with this pack, I can only hope that the new content will help us understand Mipha’s romance with Link and how close they truly were. Or why Revali held such a disliking towards our hero. Even Daruk and Urbosa’s fatherly and motherly relationship with Link and Zelda has the potential to fully flesh out who these characters are, more so than any other time in the franchise. As these plot lines hopefully develop, knowing that you won’t only fail to save Hyrule, but will be killed in the process, will make this a Zelda experience like no other. And I can’t wait for it to arrive in the fall.

Spoilers are over kids! Back to the news!

Alongside the DLC pack will be four new amiibo, one for each Champion. What function they will serve has yet to be announced, but just look at them! They’re sooooo pretty and I’m going to worship the Mipha one for the rest of my days.

Let us know what you think about this direction, the story, your predictions and your favorite amiibo in the comments!

Briefly: Wow.

We’re still digesting everything that we saw in the just-concluded Microsoft E3 press conference, but the reveal of a new, open world game set in the Metro 2033 universe was one of the coolest (and definitely the most surprising) moments of today’s Microsoft presentation.

Metro Exodus is an epic, story-driven first person shooter from 4A Games that blends deadly combat and stealth with exploration and survival horror in one of the most immersive game worlds ever created.

Flee the shattered ruins of dead Moscow and embark on an epic, continent-spanning journey across post-apocalyptic Russia in the greatest Metro adventure yet.
Explore the Russian wilderness in vast, non-linear levels and follow a thrilling story-line inspired by the novels of Dmitry Glukhovsky that spans an entire year through spring, summer and autumn to the depths of nuclear winter.
Yeah, technically the next Metro game isn’t actually in Metro, but guys, we’re getting a new Metro game.

Watch the gameplay reveal trailer below, and let us know what you enjoyed most about today’s Microsoft conference.

Metro Exodus hits Xbox One, PS4, and PC in 2018!

Briefly: Wow.

This is the first E3 2017 trailer that I’ve had the pleasure of seeing thus far, and damn if it doesn’t kick of this year’s expo with a bang (yeah, I understand that the actual expo is still several days away).

DONTNOD won my heart in 2015 with the phenomenal Life is Strange, so you’d better believe that I’m watching Vampyr with a close eye, and along with the just revealed three minute long E3 trailer for the game, the company has also announced that Vampyr will launch for PS4, Xbox One, and PC this November – I thought that it would be much further away than that.

In Vampyr, you are Dr. Jonathan Reid, a famous surgeon home from the Great War and recently turned into a vampire against your will. As a doctor, you have taken an oath to save lives and take care of the sick; as a vampire, you are cursed to hunt those you vowed to heal.

To survive against deadly foes roaming the streets – vampire hunters, undead Skal and other monstrosities – you will need to choose which civilians to feed on, so you can grow stronger and evolve your vampiric abilities. Use your unholy powers to manipulate and delve into the lives of those around you – but be prepared to live with the consequences of your actions. A web of interconnected citizens with unique lives and relationships react to your decisions, and killing just one may cause the downfall of an entire city district. Your actions will save or doom London.

Take a look at the new trailer below, and be sure to let us know what you think!

Briefly: E3 is still nearly four months away, but the house of Xbox wants us all to mark our calendars now.

There’s probably a couple of reasons for this. The post notes that the conference will take place on a different day of the week – Sunday June 11 instead of last year’s Monday, but more importantly than that, we’re expecting some major Project Scorpio news during the presentation.

Will we get a launch date? Price? Just what sort of performance improvements can we expect with this thing? It’s too early to tell, but this is one conversation that I’ll be watching closely.

Are you looking forward to E3 this year? Which presentation are you most looking forward to?

While the ESA has dabbled in the past with public E3 events like E for All and E3 Live just last year, it looks like those days are finally about to come to an end.

Yes, For the first time ever this morning, E3 has announced that the popular gaming Expo will FINALLY be opening up to the public. What does this mean you ask? This means that beginning February 13th 2017 at 9 PM PST, you’ll be able to buy a public E3 ticket for just $150 if you’re part of the first 1,000 (the other 14K will be $250.) Are you excited to finally get the chance to attend E3?

Do you think this is a good idea? Tell us in the comments below!

Briefly: The first major AAA delay of 2016… has become the first AAA cancellation of 2017.

Rumours ran rampant this morning, with multiple sources quoting that Platinum Games’ and Microsoft had parted ways, with Scalebound left in major trouble, and potentially even cancelled.

Just moments ago, Microsoft confirmed to IGN that Scalebound will indeed never be released. Here’s the quote from Microsoft:

“After careful deliberation, Microsoft Studios has come to the decision to end production for Scalebound. We’re working hard to deliver an amazing lineup of games to our fans this year, including Halo Wars 2, Crackdown 3, State of Decay 2, Sea of Thieves and other great experiences.”

Josh Jackson noted some extreme excitement for the title after its gameplay footage debut, and I have to say that it’s damned disappointing that this promising-looking title will never see the light of day.

Were you looking forward to the title? Be sure to sound out in the comments below.

Briefly: DONTNOD’s Life is Strange was by and large my favourite video game of 2015.

That said, of course I couldn’t be more excited for their next title, Vampyr: Darkness Within. The first trailer for the game debuted at E3 earlier this year, and showed off a title that looked nothing like Life is Strange, but looked extremely intriguing in its own right.

Today, a new trailer for Vampyr has popped up online, showing off more of that dark, dark London backdrop, and getting us further acquainted with our pro(?)tagonist, Docor Jonathan Reid.

Take a look at the new trailer below, and let us know what you think! Vampyr: Darkness Within is set to launch in 2017.

Vampyr, the new Action-RPG from acclaimed game-development studio Dontnod, explores protagonist Jonathan Reid’s moral plight in the E3 trailer. Set in London, 1918, Vampyr promises to offer a unique and deeply immersive experience with a strong and engaging narrative steeped in vampire mythology. The E3 trailer unveiled today introduces the nightmare your hero must live every day now he has become a real monster.

You play as a veteran of World War I, Doctor Jonathan Reid as he tries to come to terms with his transition, and the hunger that drives him to kill. Vampyr includes a unique level-up system that plays on this narrative conundrum, where huge amounts of experience points can be gained by feeding on innocent people, compared to combat. As a doctor, you must decide how many lives must be sacrificed in order for you to find a cure for this “disease”, the ultimate goal of Jonathan.

Briefly: Somehow, again, another incredible looking title completely slid under my radar.

Bethesda has just debuted the official launch trailer for Dishonored 2, and I think it may be the first Dishonored video that I’ve ever seen. How? With the first title being as celebrated as it is… I really have no idea.

In the game, you’ll “Reprise your role as a supernatural assassin in Dishonored 2, the next chapter in the award-winning Dishonored saga by Arkane Studios. As either Emily Kaldwin or Corvo Attano, travel beyond the legendary streets of Dunwall to Karnaca – a once-dazzling coastal city that holds the key to restoring Emily to power. Armed with the mark of the Outsider and powerful new supernatural abilities, hunt down your enemies and forever alter the fate of the Empire.”

Pre-orders get to play the game a day early, and also include a copy of Dishonored: Definitive Edition, so if you missed out on the first game, it’s Game of the Year Edition, and its re-release, you won’t be left in the dark any longer.

For now, take a look at the trailer below, and let us know if you’ll be picking up Dishonored 2 on November 11th!

Briefly: Well this didn’t take long.

After being announced and touted as an Xbox console exclusive, developer Playdead has revealed that their critically acclaimed Limbo follow-up, Inside, is making its way over to PS4.

The announcement comes via an accolades trailer on the official Playstation YouTube channel, which concludes with the reveal that Inside will launch on the console on August 23rd.

We can’t freaking wait.

Take a look at that accolades trailer below and remind yourself of just how phenomenal this game is, and let us know if you’re excited to play!

Briefly: Microsoft officially revealed the long expected, slightly more capable Xbox One S back at E3 this June, and the company just revealed when you’ll finally be able to get your hands on one.

The newly designed console is the most compact Xbox yet, 40 percent smaller than the original Xbox One, and includes a built-in power supply. One of the three USB ports and the pairing button have been moved to the front of the Xbox One S, and it also includes an IR blaster for increased accessibility. Of course, the Xbox One S will also be the first on-the-market console with 4K and HDR output, with HDR support coming to games like Gears of War 4, Forza Horizon 3, and Scalebound.

The console drops on August 2nd in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey, UK and United States, and is expected to hit more regions before the year ends.

It’ll cost you $399 US for a 2TB model, and is also available at $349 USD and $299 USD for 1TB and 500GB units respectively.

Sounds like a great deal if you haven’t already picked up an Xbox One… but then there’s also the far more capable Project Scorpio coming next year

Dare you planning to pick up the Xbox One S? Project Scorpio? Or are you happy with your original console?

Briefly: Following the first roster reveals from back at E3, and the Goldberg reveal trailer from earlier in June, WWE has officially announced the superstar that will grace the cover of this year’s WWE 2K17.

With the heavy Goldberg focus in the game’s trailer and marketing thus far, many fans were expecting to see the superstar (who didn’t have the greatest WWE run, per se) on the cover of this year’s anticipated title.

Instead, we’ll see The Beast himself, Brock Lesnar.

Naturally, Lesnar seems pretty happy about the news:

WWE notes that “The selection also marks the first time that Lesnar will be the sole Superstar appearing on a WWE video game cover.”

As much as I’m not a fan of Lesnar, featuring the part-timer on this year’s cover is likely the smartest move that WWE and 2K could have made. Lesnar (and his theme music) is returning for another MMA bout with UFC 200 on July 9th, and I’d imagine that a lot of WWE fans will be tuning into the Pay-Per-View to see The Beast face Mark Hunt, and I’d also imagine that, win or lose, seeing Lesnar in the octagon will garner a lot of interest for WWE, and possibly its latest video game.

2K has not revealed whether or not its beloved Showcase mode will return (and whether or not Lesnar will be the focus), but if there’s anything I’d ask for, it’d be an expanded and less repetitive career mode.

Are you looking forward to WWE 2K17? Be sure to let us know in the comments below!

I like to imagine at some point, after creating hundreds of figures and characters, that the developers of Skylanders Imaginators came up with this year’s core mechanic because they were completely out of ideas when it came to new toys for Portal Masters to take control of. And honestly, with so much content released since the original game took off in 2011, who could blame them? But with the introduction of custom Skylanders, the game has opened up an opportunity to allow its fans both young and young at heart to let their imaginations take charge and help them create the perfect character. But how will this all work? We headed over to Activision’s theater room during E3 2016 and learned all we could about the Toys To Life pioneer’s next release.

Kaos is up to no good once again, deciding that it might be best to imitate the Portal Masters who have thwarted him so many times before. Taking control of a new set of evil Skylanders, these “Doomlanders” as they’re called, the previous roster might not be enough to stop them. That’s where the Portal Masters will take control and begin to create new characters that will take the fight to Kaos, but they’ll need some new toys if they want to have access to the full range of possibilities.

E3 2016 Skylanders Imaginators Screen 1

Held in Creation Crystals, one version of the toy will be released for every element, (that’s 10 for those keeping count). Once placed on the Portal of Power, the crystal will take us into a character creation screen, allowing us to customize just about every aspect of the character that we can imagine. From their name, height, width, face, hair, color, accessories and fighting style, Imaginators will even let you create their own catchphrase for them to triumphantly call out when summoned. If you want your Skylander to have a tail, you can do it. If you want them to have a fart aura that follows them everywhere they go for some reason, you can do that too. And when you finally have that perfect Imaginator, make sure to take a selfie and hang it in your hub world for everyone to see! But just because your character is created doesn’t mean that that’s where your input stops.

Throughout the adventure, full sets of gear can be discovered, which will join hats as clothing that will affect your character’s stats. By finding hidden treasure chests, completing mini games, (including one based off of the radio from Trap Team, and the return of Sky Stones), and defeating enemies, you’ll be able to discover a wide range of new options. Some of these include the gear that we mentioned, new voices, auras, and pretty much everything that was featured on the customization screen. Your Imaginator will always be a work in progress, letting you constantly tweak it as you discover more options.

E3 2016 Skylanders Imaginators Screen 2

This guy is just one of many possible creations.

Then again, your character can have all the cool outfits in the world, but it means nothing if they don’t know how to fight. That’s where the new Skylander Senseis come into play. Your Imaginator has ten Battle Classes to choose from, determining how they will do battle against Kaos’ forces. After choosing between being a Brawler, Bowslinger or Sorcerer to name a few classes, we’ll be able to give our creations unique fighting abilities across four classifications, (weapon, elemental, secret and Soul Gem types specifically). From there, selecting a Sensei that’s proficient in that particular fighting style will lead to your Imaginator unlocking new weapon abilities to use for the matching class. From familiar faces like the reformed Wolfgang to newcomers, Ember and In order to get you to buy more than one of each type, the more Senseis you have, the higher your Imaginator level cap becomes. In other words, they won’t be able to get all that strong without a team of masters to guide them. Aside from mentoring your creations, each Sensei knows their own abilities that promise to be the strongest that the series has seen thus far. From what we know so far, it’s looking like this new set of characters will be the toys to get for the game this year.

If you’re worried about what role your old toys will play, every character will once again be playable, with some of the tracks from Superchargers returning for a racing mode to use your vehicles in. Traps will give the same items for inserting them into the game that they did in last year’s game, while classic characters will also pull double duty as Storytellers, giving your cast new missions to complete. One thing about the series is that it has yet to leave any of our past investments in the dust, so it’s great to see that this trend is continuing.

With so many new features coming to Skylanders Imaginators, it’s shaping up to be one of the standout entries as we head into the game’s sixth year. Skylanders Superchargers blew us away, leaving us feeling like it was the best game the series had produced, so this year’s version will have some big shoes to fill. But with what we’ve seen so far, (like Crash Bandicoot making an appearance as a Brawler Sensei), on top of what we haven’t thanks to our possible characters being dictated by the limits of our own imaginations, we’re left with seemingly countless possibilities that might live up to the challenge.

Skylanders Imaginators will release for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and Wii U on October 16.

As a longtime fan of the Ace Attorney series, I always imagined that it must be really hard to make a sequel for a game like this. As a simple lawyer, how can the development team keep finding new ways to prove that people are lying through text? Obviously, whoever’s working at Capcom is a lot more creative than I am, because they’ve pulled off new mechanics well so far. Their impeccable track record is seemingly continuing in Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney- Spirit of Justice, the sixth mainline game for the popular handheld series, asking the lawyer to examine the senses of the victims at the time of death.

E3 2016 Phoenix Wright Screen 1

Finding himself in a foreign country that detests lawyers, with a legal system that relies on Spirit Mediums to take us back to a victim’s final moments to identify their killers, (kind of like Minority Report in reverse), how is someone supposed to defend the innocent with rules like these? With that said, how can the defendant be innocent when you’re watching what seems to be the crime in action, with your client committing the crime? In typical Wright fashion, you bluff until you find a clue that can blow the case wide open. Except this time, examining memories themselves will be the only way to do so.

E3 2016 Phoenix Wright Screen 2

When viewing the victim’s death, the sensations that they’re feeling manifest into words in the vision. While not meaning much at first glance, this method of cross examination will let you point out contradictions in new ways. In the demo version, the time of death was called into question since the victim heard the Song of Ceremony, which wasn’t supposed to take place until some time after. Perhaps the most obvious sense, his sight, also played a role as the person apparently blacked out right before feeling the blow to his head that led to his death. Once these contradictions came to light, it wasn’t long before the court started questioning their full proof methods, but in typical Ace Attorney fashion, not before taking some humorous pot shots at our favorite lawyer. Just be prepared to get it your guesses wrong on your way to success, which gives the game plenty of chances to show off the return of five “chances” before you get a game over as opposed to the health bar that’s been a mainstay since the second game.

E3 2016 Phoenix Wright Screen 3Comparing testimony to the senses that the victim experienced is your path to justice.

This mechanic takes some time to get used to, but I have complete faith in the development team. Like with the psychological profiles and nervous ticks from the last two games, I fully expect to be challenged in new, exciting ways when Spirit of Justice releases exclusively for the Nintendo 3DS in September.

One thing that Monster Hunter has lacked is a pure support type character. Certain weapons, like the Hunting Horn for example, allow its wielder to buff and heal the team, but they’re also capable fighters in their own right. On the flip side, the games have never had a shortage of Palicos, CPU controlled cat sidekicks who either join you in battle, or can be discovered on the field with important items. Now that Monster Hunter Generations is debuting these mascots as a playable class, I couldn’t wait to take down a giant monster with such an adorable fighter. As I quickly learned however, this wasn’t the best idea after one of my partners also chose it, leading to a largely ineffective combination. In other words, do not pick more than one Palico!

E3 2016 Monster Hunter Generations Screen 1

Essentially a pure support class, the Palico has a series of fundamental differences that separate it from your typical hunter. Most noticeably, it doesn’t have a stamina meter, allowing it to run, climb, jump and attack to your heart’s content. Its weapon never goes dull, and it has two extra lives, meaning that it can die twice before it starts detracting from the team’s total pool of three lives. On top of that, it has more starting health than any other human character without eating food before going on a mission. Coming equipped with its own special abilities, it can even heal and buff the party, summon its own items, and trigger special attacks that are unique to it.

So at this point, you might wondering what the problem is. I had the same thought while I was playing, feeling like this character was a glorified Easy Mode. I quickly learned that wasn’t the case. First of all, the Palico does very little damage with horrible range, having to get right up on a monster in order to hurt it. This naturally leads to taking more damage, which is harder to recover from since it can’t carry any items other than the ones generated from its special abilities. To access them, you’ll have to charge your special meter, which can only be done by successfully attacking enemies. But as we mentioned above, that can be easier said than done.

E3 2016 Monster Hunter Generations Screen 2

After learning these details in the midst of a battle, I started to appreciate how well a team could gain an advantage with a strong performing kitty. From an offensive standpoint however, you’re essentially going in with a three person team assuming you’re in a four player party. Add in a second Palico, and you’re down to two, which is what happened with my group. We fought the Rathalos we were preying on for the full 15 minutes, but despite it limping and drooling for a long time, (telltale signs that it’s near death), we couldn’t do enough damage to seal the deal before our time was up.

With just a taste of what a full support character can do, I’m looking forward to learning more about the Palico class in Monster Hunter Generations. What abilities will it learn? What weapons can it wield? Is there a way to make it stronger, and will its support capabilities suffer? We’ll be sure to let you know when the game releases on July 15 for the 3DS, but you’ll be able to get a taste for yourself when the demo goes live to the public on June 30.

The short version of my time playing Nioh at E3 is that I died. I died, then I died again, and then I died some more. This upcoming action game from Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja is delivering on its promise to deliver a challenge rivaling Dark Souls, but even with that knowledge, I wasn’t expecting to find myself being manhandled so badly. If I was at home, I probably would’ve chucked the controller across the room a few times over, but I didn’t want to leave the convention in cuffs, so a deep breath had to suffice. Behind all the bloodshed however, is a beautiful, technically sound game that’s showing a lot of promise, mostly for its deep combat mechanics as we return to the days of samurai and demons.

E3 2016 Nioh Screen 1

As William, an English samurai based off of William Adams, your skill with the blade will be tested as each of the demo’s stages were full of deadly opponents who would jump at the chance to make your day a little bit worse. By making the mistake of entering a yokai haven, I never made contact with any of the demons since the human enemies kept me at bay with their synchronization and powerful attacks. Using three different stances that William can switch on the fly, each one favors either speed, power, or a balanced fighting style that helps you adapt to incoming threats. The problem as that as more enemies began to show up, it became easy to get overwhelmed, quickly teaching me that I would have to have my eyes on all enemies at all times. This isn’t one of those games where enemies will stand around waiting for their turn to attack either, because they won’t be shy about attacking you off camera, from behind, or while you’re in combat with another foe.

When battle became hard to keep up with, I was able to back off and use my bow and arrow to do some damage with afar. Thankfully, you’re able to recover some of your energy and items if you reach your corpse from a previous death, so you can start with a bit of an advantage compared to where you started. Even then, you can’t do too much at once, because William has a very strict stamina bar that dictates the actions he can use. If you swing too much, dodge one too many times, or sprint for too long, he’ll begin to move slower and lose his ability to defend himself. As you can imagine, this becomes difficult as more enemies pile on you, and only becomes worse when you see how two attacks landing can lead to your death.

E3 2016 Nioh Screen 2

When I finally got past the *first* area after about 40 minutes of futility, I was quickly met by a pair of ninjas. They attacked much faster than I could, dashed backwards when I tried to counter, and would constantly surround me whenever I tried to mount any kind of offense. Before I could figure out a way to get by their attack patterns and move on to the real demons, my hour was up and I left a humbled man.

So far, Nioh can be great. It looks amazing, hints at plenty of depth and is very rewarding when you’re finally able to clear those hurdles. My only concern is that I have yet to figure out if the game is hard because it’s designed to make you play carefully and precisely, or if it’s simply just cheap. Unfortunately, an hour isn’t enough time to determine this, but depending on where it falls will determine whether or not the game will be as great as it could be. Or maybe I just suck, but either way, I’m looking forward to finding out for myself when the game releases for the PlayStation 4 on October 28.

What happens when you need to keep making games about a popular anime series that hasn’t made a new episode in years? Apparently, you pass it between developers! After Spike Chunsoft’s 3DS effort disappointed last year, Koei Tecmo and Omega Force, (the team behind Dynasty Warriors and its spin offs), are trying their hand at the giant slaying franchise with Attack On Titan. By turning the tables on their usual formula and putting the player in a mob of soldiers that serve as fodder for the Titans, our hands-on time at E3 gave us glimpses of the series done justice.

Attack On Titan is split up into two major gameplay sections. The primary play mode is when you’re in control of one of the human characters, who traverses the smoldering towns with their 3D Maneuvering Gear. As you would expect from a game bearing the anime’s name, movement was the most exciting part of the time I played, feeling like a Survey Corps bad ass as I swooped in and out of the Titan’s range. Of course, you’ll have to get the controls down first, which had a moderate learning curve before things felt natural.

E3 2016 Attack on Titan Screen 2

Once they did however, combat was fast and fluid. Following the story of the anime, (which might look familiar since it’s the only story we’ve had animated for a long time), I made it my personal mission to make Mikasa look like as much of a pro under my control as she does in the source material, which I met with mixed results. Allowing us to target any limb on Titans both big and small that are powering through the towns allows you to get special advantages depending on the situation, whether you need to stop their movement or take away attacks with a successful amputation. Of course, the only way to finish one off is to slice off the nape of their neck, which is where I focused on most of the time. While it sounds simple enough, there’s a lot to take into account when lining up your perfect slice. You’ll need enough distance, momentum and timing to pull off the kill, and failing could lead to you being caught by one of the monsters. Running out of steam for your Gear and your blades going dull can also become a problem, forcing you to find new items to help you regroup. Trust me, there’s nothing worse than thinking you killed a powerful opponent, only to see your swords bounce off of them. To make matters worse, every kill is ranked, only furthering the embarrassment when you screw up.

But being a great Survey Corps member is about more than being able to kill enemies, because like Dynasty Warriors, there will be many times when you have to protect allies and key points on the map. Allowing too many of your comrades to die or letting Titans run wild will eventually lead to your game over’s, which is why it’s important to play to your character’s strengths. Mikasa for example, has a special ability that lets her slice up multiple limbs at once after it builds up. How other characters will play wasn’t shown as of now, but we’re looking forward to finding out as the game’s release draws closer.

E3 2016 Attack on Titan Screen 1

When not slicing up your enemies, you’ll be able to punch them really hard instead. Taking on Eren’s Titan form, you’ll be able to give the opposing giants a taste of their own medicine. Perfect for when you want to set aside the technical gameplay of the core mode for some old fashioned button mashing, playing as a Titan allows you to jump far across the map with a single leap and charge into enemies at high speeds when not punching and kicking them to death. Sure, you’ll probably level a few houses in between, but let’s face it. Those people probably would’ve been killed one way or another.

Overall, I’m impressed by what we’ve seen so far, and can’t wait to dive deeper into this universe once again. With multiple missions and characters to discover, let’s hope the full version continues to deliver when it releases for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One, PC and PlayStation Vita on August 30.

The Gundam franchise has existed long before many of us were even born, with more figures, kits and anime series’ than we can imagine. Knowing that, when some very closely inspired video games started releasing throughout the 90’s and 2000’s, namely Sega’s Virtual On and Level-5’s Little Battlers Xperience. These versus style 3D arena fighters seemed like a perfect fit for the decades old mech series, but for some reason, they never came! It turns out Japan was holding out on us, since a series using this gameplay format did exist, but was largely been kept out of the West. But that’s changing with Mobile Suit Gundam: Extreme Vs. Force, which will bring together heroes that span the entire franchise exclusively to the PlayStation Vita for a handheld battle of supremacy. We played it at E3 and learned how big of a difference some familiar faces can make.

E3 2016 Gundam Extreme VS Force Screen 1

Choosing from over a dozen pilots out of the 30 plus that are featured in the full game, each one comes with their signature Gundam. Having the freedom to move openly in a 3D space, your character comes equipped with their own weapons and abilities that look to tear down the opposition while paying homage to their source at the same time. This time however, your opponents are going to be other Gundams, who are just as eager to boost and position themselves in order to take you out. With so many games featuring the franchise gaining a reputation for being slower and more clunky, playing Extreme Vs. Force felt like a dream.

Knowing this, it makes the battles even more fun to play when multiple opponents are on the field. Featuring 2 on 2 and even 6 on 6 battles that can bring a towering battleship into the fight, there will be plenty of ways to put that huge roster to good use. Missions that span the entire run will keep pilots busy, but when the single player content isn’t enough, you can always take on a friend with the game’s local ad-hoc mode. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem as if the game will feature online of any kind, but here’s to hoping we’ll have plenty of content to sift through when the game releases on July 12.

With such a rich history, which characters are you looking forward to playing with? Let us know in the comments, and be sure to check back with us as more details surface.

As anyone who has been caught up in the Amiibo craze can tell you, after spending a small fortune on all the Nintendo themed figurines, it becomes hard to store all of them. If you were hoping for some kind of relief, that was squashed the second the company decided to announce new Super Mario Bros and Legend of Zelda figures coming out in 2016 and beyond. With this in mind, PDP had some really cool stands on display that will let you take your fandom to the next level.

First, the Spinning Fire Bar Display reminds us of some of our most frustrating moments from the NES days with 30 years of nostalgia to make us remember it fondly. With an actual spinning plastic flame in front of your Amiibo of choice, it’s a pretty great way of making your villainous characters seem all the more intimidating. The Fire Bar Display retails for $14.99.

E3 2016 PDP Amiibo Fire Bar

Then again, I don’t know anyone who only has one Amiibo, which is why the Donkey Kong Display will be able to hold as many as you can squeeze under your roof. Modeled after the 1981 arcade classic, the standard package holds up to nine figures, with three on each row of scaffolding held above each other with sets of ladders. When asked, PDP confirmed that you’ll be able to buy multiple sets and stack them even higher. Do you think my landlord would be okay with raising the ceiling a couple of feet? The Donkey Kong Display will release at a $19.99 price point.

Amiibo collecting isn’t all about Mario though, which is why a new Master Sword Stylus Display was revealed alongside the rest of this impressive lineup. Perhaps the most exciting product of the bunch, this stand serves both as a great way to display your favorite amiibo, while giving you an envy inducing stylus to use with your 3DS. If that wasn’t enough of a reason to get excited, the display makes a pulling sound when you take the Master Sword out, while an insertion sound effect plays when it’s put back in. Obviously designed to go with the Legend of Zelda line of figures, you can technically use them with any amiibo you want, finally giving us a glimpse of what Callie or Marie might look like as Heroes of Time. Like the Spinning Fire Bar, this stand will be $14.99.

Rounding out PDP’s Nintendo related products are some non-amiibo goods, which feature two familiar franchises. First, the Pop N Display Question Block mimics the in game blocks their modeled after by housing our most prized possessions, which in this case, is our 3DS games! Folding out to hold ten at a time, I would love to bring this with me when I’m out so I can show off my Mario fandom while not having to scramble to find all my games. Just don’t be an idiot like me and leave it somewhere! That’s a lot of stuff to lose at once that could send you into a downward spiral. The Pop N Display Question Block will cost you $9.99.

Lastly, if you want to protect both your games AND your handheld, Toon Link has us covered with the Legend of Zelda Slim Storage Armor. This green New 3DS XL case displays the Wind Waker protagonist in the heat of battle, keeping our handheld safe from drops and scratches. The armor has an extra compartment to hold three games, two standard sized styluses and a cleaning charm, the latter of which also comes with the package. Setting us back $14.99, it’s a small price to pay to shield ourselves from our own clumsiness.

All of the above products are releasing in August. Which ones are you looking forward to the most? Sound off in the comments, and keep checking back for more news from the E3 show floor!

Atlus and SNK Playmore have delivered their next reveal trailer for the upcoming fighting game, The King of Fighters XIV. Showing off Team Official Invitation, the first full team of new characters, this odd group seems to have a few sinister surprises behind their varied personalities.

First up is Kukri, a mysterious hooded man who can control, and even dissolve into sand when attacking his opponents. Using these skills to teleport, do damage from both sides of the screen, and overwhelm his opponents with a tidal wave, the sand effects are some of the best visuals we’ve seen from the game to date.

Moving away from the supernatural in favor of straight up ass kicking, Mian draws inspiration from Chinese Operas and integrates that with her Bian Lian martial arts. Showing off some of her impressive looking combos, the only time the masked fighter shows her face is when she’s ready to unleash her most powerful attack to take down her opponent. In her case, looks can be very deceiving, in more ways than one.

Lastly is the team’s leader, Sylvie, who we got to try at E3 this year. As a former member of the NESTS organization from the KOF 99 – 2001, the seemingly wacky girl obtained power over electricity, which she isn’t afraid to unleash in battle. Aside from her unorthodox fighting style and appearance, she seems to be hiding a much darker side of herself, which peaks out when her strongest technique is pulled off. It makes you wonder what kind of power she really holds if she’s able to take the lead in a team as powerful as this one.

With that in mind, I can’t help but feel this team will play a major role in the game’s story. Aside from their team name, which implies that they’re special guests of the tournament, teams featuring all new characters have often been primary antagonists in the past. Sylvie’s change in demeanor only confirms this, which is more the reason as to why I can’t wait to play this when it releases on August 23 exclusively on the PlayStation 4.

While no stranger to crossovers, Strider Hiryu’s latest appearance might be his greatest one yet. Capcom has announced that the purple clad ninja’s gear and trademark weapon will be available for your hunters in Monster Hunter Generations.

As the star of his own brutally difficult side scrolling platformer that were all the rage when it released in 1989, Strider was unique with the game’s futuristic setting, robotic gear, and the ability to wall climb. Largely forgotten until his re-appearance in Marvel Vs. Capcom skyrocketed him to gaming super-stardom, the character has since received two more games, and guest appearances in non-Capcom games such as Project X Zone 2. With most of his modern following stemming from these crossover games, it’s no surprise that Monster Hunter Generations would add Hiryu to its growing list of cameos, joining Arthur from Ghosts n’ Goblins, Ametarasu of Okami fame, and Marth’s equipment found throughout Nintendo’s Fire Emblem  series, Strider seems like a perfect fit.

Out of all of the guest appearances, which ones are you looking forward to the most? Are there any you hope return from Monster Hunter 4? Let us know in the comments, and make sure to check out our impressions of the E3 demo when you’re done!

At the Ubisoft Lounge during this year’s E3, I had the opportunity to play a short demo from the company’s new working title, For Honor!  For Honor is a game where the central gameplay focuses on a battles between Knights, Samurai, and Vikings in a war-torn world.

The demo jumps you right in the middle of the action where you’re trying to protect a fortress from oncoming invaders.  The demo is tutorial based, so everything happens as is necessary to learn the essential functions of the game.  The focus in particular is placed on movement, and combat.

First, you will find that movement feels really heavy.  This doesn’t have to be a bad thing–considering the soldiers are full clad in body armor, it almost seems appropriate for them to have a heavy feel.  You start as a higher ranked knight, and you can truly tell the difference between your character and the armies that surround you–you almost tower over the lower ranked knights.

FH_Screen_Portrait_the_Warden_E3_160613_230pm_1465808435

One of the first fights places you in a sparring match with an enemy knight of the same rank.  The combat system is based on blocking and counterattacking–by mimicking your opponent’s stances, you can block their attacks and then follow up with attacks of your own.  There are buttons you can press to break their guard as well.  Some of the combat is reminiscent of the sword battles in Assassin’s Creed 2, before they started giving you extra tools of the trade to make combat easier.  It requires a lot of focus–at times you may stand there for even a minute straight, waiting for your opponent to make the first move.

You won’t always have to be forced into this one on one combat system, as the “small fry”, or lesser enemy soldiers, can be felled by one quick swipe of your sword.  It can feel exhilarating taking out a horde of smaller enemy soldiers as they rush towards you.  It’s also worth noting that environmental hazards can change the combat, such as taking damage by trying to walk through fire.  And like most other games, you can replenish health by grabbing and using the items as well.

FH_Screen_Action_The_Warden_E3_160613_230pm_1465808439

The graphics are great, but may be defined based on the platform.  I believe I was playing it on PC using a controller similar to an Xbox One’s (I’m about 90% sure of that).  I never noticed any slowdown when many enemy soldiers were coming towards me, the graphics and texture of the bricks and stones on the fort showed great detail on age and weather, and even the battle scarred armor was pristine in its presentation.

For Honor looks like it’s shaping up to be an interesting swords combat and war game!  And I’m sure it’ll be even more interesting when we’re able to freely try each of the factions against each other, with contrasting swordplay styles!

I was late to the whole Monster Hunter craze, which means I also missed many of the well made games that modeled its gameplay after Capcom’s mega hit. Even then, the God Eater name didn’t escape me, as Bandai Namco’s take on the genre swept Japan by storm, becoming a massive seller on the PSP. Now that the game is getting the remake treatment ahead of the sequel’s release, we took the chance to get some hands-on time with the original at E3 to see how it compares to the rest of the pack.

E3 2016 God Eater Resurection Screen 2

The first thing a newcomer will notice when jumping on board is how much faster this game is. While it’s a deliberate design choice, one of the more frustrating aspects of Monster Hunter is how slow the attacks are. Your characters will oftentimes be locked into their attack animations with no way to stop, so if the enemy mounts a counter attack mid swing, there’s nothing you can do other than take the damage. God Eater felt much more like a traditional action game, giving us the ability to switch between melee and ranged attacks on the fly, while being able to speed through the battlefield as I zoned in on my target.

Even with the change of pace, I doubt the series would have become so popular if all it was was a faster version of an established franchise. With this in mind, God Eater took battles in a completely different direction thanks to your weapon’s ability to transform into a mouth and eat your fallen foes. Serving as a much cooler way to pick up parts off of the enemies you’ve killed, using this attack on larger enemies would result in the weapon absorbing a special ability that would deliver huge amounts of damage to whoever stands in your way. With multiple weapons to fit your play style, these abilities further add to the amount of options you’ll have on the battlefield.

E3 2016 God Eater Resurection Screen 1

And options seems to be the name of the game in Resurrection, with plenty of customizable parts to create your character. Once created, you’ll be able to take your new soldier into single player story missions, as well as cooperative quests that can be enjoyed either locally or online. With multiple weapons, looks and strategies to take up, taking down Aragami has never looked so good with the visual upgrade the PS4 and Vita versions have received. If you’re looking for the next big multiplayer action game to eat up your summer on PlayStation platforms, then this game sounds like a good way to go.

God Eater Resurrection will release for the PlayStation 4 and PS Vita on June 28.

The first time I heard of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, I thought it was just a new Dreamcast fighting game. I had no idea that it was a long running manga series that as of now, has been around for about 30 years. Recently, the franchise has had a resurgence thanks to the anime adaptation of Diamond Is Unbreakable, the fourth part of the story that was originally published in the mid 90’s, which is why now is a perfect time for a new game to hit the shelves! We got the chance to try out the game ahead of its release at E3, and it’s safe to say that this game will have plenty to love if you’re a fan of the series.

E3 2016 Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Eyes of Heaven Screen 2

Featuring an original story that brings multiple generations of the House of Joestar together for one giant adventure, Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Eyes Of Heaven pits its 50 plus characters against each other in a two on two 3D fighting game developed by CyberConnect2, (the development team behind the Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm series). Resembling a modern generation beat em up game rather than a traditional fighter, you’re more likely to get Power Stone vibes than feeling any sort of familiarity from the franchises previous fighters. This time, you’ll team up with your CPU partner, (or human controlled friend if playing online), and use the environments, tag team attacks and individual powers to finish off your opponents.

As expected from the series, the stylized character models, over the top special moves and manga-like presentation bring this world to life in a faithful way… Which would mean absolutely nothing if the game wasn’t fun to play. With my brief time running around within the demo build however, it was obvious that this wouldn’t be an issue. While admittedly taking a bit of time to get used to the many types of movements and attacks at my disposal, it wasn’t long before my chiseled hero was able to wipe the floor with his opponents. Serving as more than just a button masher, being synchronized with my partner was the most rewarding aspect of my time with the game, allowing me to pull off juggles, tag team attacks, and my strongest abilities with ease.

E3 2016 Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Eyes of Heaven Screen 1

If you’re looking for a huge amount of depth, you aren’t going to find it here. But if you’re a long time follower of the anime and manga and want to battle with some strangers online with a few of your friends? Then you might want to get ready for when Eyes Of Heaven releases for the PlayStation 4 next week. Promising a full story mode, a cast that spans all eight chapters of the manga, and plenty of environmental interaction to discover, fans should find this to be an adventure worth checking out.

Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Eyes of Heaven will release for the PlayStation 4 on June 28.

The Nintendo Treehouse presentation of Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon was fantastic!  Not only did they introduce new elements to the games, but new Pokemon were revealed as well!  While it’s very easy to note the obvious differences, I will also cover the enhancements to the system that will make the game more accessible to newcomers, as well as help Pokemon veterans!  Let’s have a look at some of these amazing changes!

A clear difference at the start of the game, and one that most already know, is the proportions of the environment in relation to the characters are much more accurate.  Mountains tower way above the character, trees loom with an exact height, and even distance from the edge of a cliff to a beachfront has a sense of immersion.  Within Pokemon battles, not only is the (silly) circle beneath Pokemon eliminated, but also, the Pokemon are shown to be battling right beside their trainers.  This more accurately depicts the theme of Pokemon having a bond with their trainer, but also shows how large Pokemon are in relation to the humans in game.  Just imagine how cool a Snorlax would look right next to its trainer?

In relation to the fighting system, I will provide screenshots to accompany the points I will make:

sm1

For section one, you will notice a handy shortcut to the Pokeball menu.  Veterans of the game will rejoice at this option because previously, you had to flip through several menu screens in order to reach that section.  Section 2 depicts a two dimensional sprite version of the battle, and allows you to tap either Pokemon with your stylus.  Doing so leads us into our next screenshot:

sm4

This screen not only displays typing, as well as other info, but is also a shortcut to see the buffs and debuffs that each Pokémon has!  Veteran players have always had to keep track of this information in their mind–for example, if you do a Swords Dance, the game states that it “sharply raises the Attack stat.” However, delve deeper into competitive battling, and you will know that the move increases your Attack by “two stages” out of six.  If you try to increase past six, the move will fail.  This isn’t directly noted anywhere in the game, so this nice additional screen will allow new players to understand this level of battling, as well as take away the burden of memorization from veteran players.  But that’s not all!

sm2

sm3

These images are seen at different points in the demonstration, but they are very telling.  First, you can press L+A to see a detailed description of the moves, but also, there is fine print underneath the moves that marks how effective a move is against an opposing Pokémon.  Previously, you had to go through several menus to read the description of a move, and type effectiveness was based on a person’s knowledge of the game’s mechanics.  Now that the information is on the screen, new players won’t feel as burdened, and matches may be able to move a lot smoother!  I’m curious if this takes more than typing into effect–for example, an Earthquake will not affect a Pokémon using an Air Balloon as an item at all.  Only time will tell!

The Pokedex is experiencing a huge revamp, but one new feature revealed in the demonstration is the registration screen, where you will see the Pokémon you have captured, as well as all existing evolutions and forms you have yet to experience!  These forms will appear on the screen if they have been previously caught, and all unregistered forms will appear as gray Pokeball icons.

sm5

The demonstration later takes you to a battle with a rival, where I couldn’t help but notice that the backdrop of the battle was special.  Put simply, there is a Street Fighter-like crowd surrounding the Pokémon battle.  Special backdrops aren’t new to the series, but were previously limited to Gym Leader battles in sixth generation.  It looks like this may be expanding even further to rival battles and even more!

Another new battling style is coming to Pokémon Sun and Moon called Battle Royal!  Not to be confused with its wrestling counterpart (but ironically set in a wrestling ring), this is a four player free-for-all with special rules!  All trainers get to take their turn at the same time and attack whichever Pokémon they would like.  The match doesn’t end until one trainer loses all of their Pokémon.  This decides the loser, but doesn’t necessarily decide the winner.  When the match has ended the game uses a series of algorithms, such as total number of Pokémon defeated, to determine the winner.  Coupled with many of the previous mechanics, the possibilities are endless–ganging up on one player, running stall tactics, etc.  It will be fun to see which new strategies this gameplay style can bring to the table!

sm7sm7Sun and Moon truly looks like a game ready to shake the foundation of the series and bring lots of new players in!  As I find new enhancements throughout the year, I will be sure to let you all know!  How do you feel about the improvements?  Please let us know in the comments!
