Barry Burton, the popular magnum carrying, NRA approved badass from the original Resident Evil, is making his long awaited return to the series in the upcoming sequel, Revelations 2.

In pursuit of his missing daughter, Barry will be accompanied by Natalia Korda, a new character who has the ability to sense hidden items and monsters, Surely needing all the help he can get, Mr. Burton will have to make sure his old gunslinging abilities are up to par if he expects to find his daughter and escape alive.

Famous as a mentor to Jill during her scenario in the first game, Barry gave us legendary dialogue that still lives today. From declaring his partner was almost turned into a “Jill Sandwich,” and being painfully confused about everything that was going on around him in the Spencer Mansion, it’ll be great to finally see him in action again, especially when you consider how many series characters have been forgotten.

Resident Evil Revelations 2 will be an episodic title to be released between February and March. Also staring RE2‘s Claire Redfield and Barry’s daughter, Moira Burton, the title will receive a physical release once the full season has hit digital formats on March 10th for Xbox One 360, PS4 and PS3.

At $5.99 an episode, $24.99 a season, or $39.99 for the retail version, the pricing is… Bizarre. Buying the individual episodes is cheaper than either bundle, with the physical copy being a whole $15 more than the season. Sure, the season comes with Hunk as an extra character in the score based Raid Mode, and the physical copy comes with Hunk as well as Wesker, and four extra costumes, but what if you just want to play the game without the DLC? In the wise words of Barry… “What is this?”

Capcom has announced that the next major release in the popular Street Fighter franchise, is on its way, exclusively for the Playstation 4 and PC.

Showcasing Ryu and Chun Li, the brief trailer shows off the upgraded visuals compared to its predecessor, complete with extra features such as destructible environments, new moves, and the return of old favorites, like Ryu’s Denjin Hadouken!

Fighting games were all but dead to the general public in 2009 when Street Fighter IV arrived, reviving the classic series after a 10 year hiatus in terms of the core series. Like it did in the early 90’s, the sequel helped bring the genre back to prominence, leading to 2D fighter renaissance, mostly headed by numerous re-releases in typical series fashion. With this announcement, it seems like Capcom is ready to move the series forward much faster than it has in the past.

But with this excitement comes a bit of skepticism. From what we’ve seen, SFV looks so much like IV that I thought it WAS IV at first glance. Every new iteration of the game has had huge visual and game play alterations, making each version stand out as its own game. With V though, it’s clear that it’s leaning heavily on the style of its prequel. And even with the combos and moves shown in the video, all of them except for Chun-Li’s air attack were recreations of moves from Street Fighter III, showing that the new game will borrow from that iteration as well, although how much so is yet to be seen. Will V be able to carve its own path of the warrior? Or is the number in the title there because they ran out of ways to say “Super”?

It’s hard to say based off of one minute of footage, but we’ll be watching this game closely as details emerge. Make sure to check back as information becomes available, and let us know what you want to see from the next Street Fighter release!

Briefly: Early last month Capcom surprised us all with the announcement of a new HD version of its horror classicResident Evil.

The initial screens were very pretty, but now there’s a gorgeous trailer, complete with terrible voice acting, for you to feast those hungry eyes on.

As Andy noted in the original announcement, “the Xbox One and PS4 will benefit the most from this HD version of Resident Evil with things like 1080p resolution and fully remastered sound to support 5.1 surround sound. There will also be options to change the aspect ratio between 4:3 and 16:9. Not sure I would want to go back to the dark days of 4:3 though having that option will please someone out there. If you hated the tank controls of Resident Evil, you’re in luck. There will be an alternative control scheme for those of us who never want to go back to those frustrating controls ever again.”

Literally years have passed since the initial announcement for Professor Layton VS. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, one of the most unexpected crossovers in recent memory. After tons of speculation and a fear that the title might never get localized, those thoughts were put to rest when an official announcement was made confirming its impending release earlier this year. Now, we find ourselves about a month away from being able to play it for ourselves, but we got a small taste of what’s to come, courtesy of the Nintendo Lounge at San Diego Comic Con.

Divided into two sections, the game features both Professor Layton‘s trademark puzzles and Phoenix Wright‘s trial sections. On Layton’s side of the equation, his game play is essentially identical to his native titles, leading him and his assistant, Luke, to examine environments via the touch screen for hint coins and puzzles. Ranging from logic tests, math based scenarios, mazes, and many other challenges in between, a certain amount of puzzles need to be completed before progress can be made. While these challenges can range from insultingly easy to frustratingly difficult, the demo was kept on the simpler side of things, allowing progression to flow smoothly.

Capcom has just announced that the original Resident Evil will be coming to Xbox One and PS4, as well as the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC sometime in early 2015. If you remember back in 2002, Resident Evil was remade with better visuals with some new gameplay elements thrown in. This is the version of Resident Evil that will get the HD treatment to make it presentable for the people that might play the game for the first time.

With anticipation building for the upcoming 3DS exclusive, Monster Hunter 4: Ultimate, Capcom revealed some information in regards to its upcoming title that will surely please the Nintendo faithful.

Hunters will be able to don Link’s legendary equipment from the Legend of Zelda series, complete with his trademark green tunic, Master Sword and Hylian Shield. As you can probably guess, the items act as a sword & shield weapon type, with which players will be able to channel their inner hero while they take down the game’s most ferocious beasts.

As someone who is highly anticipating MH4‘s release, and a HUGE Zelda fan, I can’t wait to start putting the Master Sword to good use in this type of game. Of course, crossovers with other franchises aren’t new to the series, with InuYasha’s Tessaiga coming to Japanese copies of Monster Hunter Tri and 3 Ultimate, as well as some of the game’s most iconic monsters appearing in Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. It’s great that Link’s gear is actually going to make it state side. All we got last time was some generic sword in place of the fuzzy anime blade. Oh, how I loathe licensing deals.

But it begs the question, will the equipment be good? Usually with themed gear such as this, its strength is so low, that it’s not worth using. Even if this is the case though, being able to play dress up as one of gaming’s greatest icons can only be a good thing.

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate is planned for a January 2015 release.

Hunters throughout the West have sat back in envy as Japan has enjoyed the latest Monster Hunter title since late last year. While the idea that we’ll never get to see the standard version of the fourth game isn’t a pleasant thought to take in, at least it seems Capcom is cutting the crap this time and skipping straight to the Ultimate version.

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate is the updated version of the original game that came to Japan, featuring giant weapons and even bigger monsters both new and old at our disposal. Coming exclusively to the 3DS, weapons like the Insect Glaive and Charge Blade join tried and true favorites like great swords and bowguns to help prove your superiority in the wild. Checking out the action in the latest trailer, it’s definitely looking like a hunt we won’t want to miss. Let’s just hope there won’t be a Ultra Hyper 2016 Edition down the road…

What monsters are you looking forward to fighting when Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate releases in early 2015?

 

It’s been over three years since one little trailer brought the gaming community to tears, collapsing in sheer joy over the thought that the impossible was now possible. That trailer would bring two worlds together, more significant than anything that was going on in our collective lives at that moment. This trailer… was Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, a dream team of crime solving, mystery seeking, puzzle loving juggernauts that sent both fan bases into states of shock.

Then time passed… the game released in Japan without a whisper as to when, or even IF the game would be localized anywhere else. It wasn’t until a few months ago that a U.S. release was confirmed during one of the Nintendo Direct presentations, but it wasn’t until E3 that we FINALLY, have our own full fledged release trailer. Spoiler alert: it’s all kinds of awesome.

Taking place in a fantasy world formed by the pages of a magical book, Layton, Phoenix, and their assistants, Luke and Maya, are tasked with solving the mystery of the witch hunts. The trailer shows off tons of animated footage from the game in action. This comes with the territory for Layton fans, but the snippets of footage in Dual Destinies were never at this level of detail, even though the voiceovers are a little iffy for the Ace Attorney crew. Maybe it’ll be easier to get used to once we put more time into it?

Combining game play from both series, players will solve puzzles, seek out hint coins and solve mysteries with Layton, while Phoenix is shown battling witnesses and prosecutors in court as he proves his client innocent during the witch trials. Even the judge looks just like his modern day counterpart! Ah, some things never change.

Even though the game has been completed for awhile, we only have to wait a few more months before we can play the title ourselves and safely tread the Internet without fear of spoilers once again. It’s official; Capcom is bringing the Phoenix Wright trilogy to the West! It was announced that the Turnabout Attorney will return to the 3DS, courtesy of this collection of the first three games in the popular text adventure series. This gives gamers a chance to relive the rookie lawyer’s early triumphs, only now with improved visuals and all in one handy download.

I’ve championed these games since the original was released in 2005 thanks to their immersive stories, tense game play and hysterical writing. Even years later, some of the cases contained in the original three titles stand out as some of the very best, making piecing together mysteries, presenting evidence and pressing witnesses on your path to the truth is still one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve ever played. The series has had its ups and downs in recent years, (namely Investigations 2 never getting released outside of Japan and the latest adventure, Dual Destinies, only getting a digital release), but this announcement shows that Capcom still has faith in the franchise outside of Japan. Having said that, the game has already been re-released on iOS and the Wii, so it’s hard to want to rush out and buy them again for a potential fourth time. But if you STILL haven’t played these games after all these ports have come and gone, the 3DS version is as good of a reason as any to finally stand at the defense’s bench.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy will hit the 3DS this winter through the Nintendo eShop, but we’ ll let you know what it’s like in motion during E3 2014! As you wait on baited breath for that, check out the game’s reveal trailer and let us know if you’ll be returning to the courtroom!

Briefly: The Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist premiere is approaching faster than an approaching shoryuken (May 23rd), and Machinima has just launched the full trailer for the anticipated series.

The series takes “the audience back to the formative years of iconic characters Ryu and Ken as they live a traditional warrior’s life in secluded Japan. The boys are, unknowingly, the last practitioners of the ancient fighting style known as“Ansatsuken” (Assassin’s Fist). The series follows them as they learn about the mysterious past of their master, Gōken, and the tragic, dark legacy of the Ansatsuken style. Can their destiny be changed, or will history repeat itself?”

It looks like a lot of fun, and ALL 12 episodes will be available on May 23rd. The series “is the brainchild of Joey Ansah (The Bourne Ultimatum, Snow White and the Huntsman). Ansah, who also stars in the series (Akuma), wrote the script with Christian Howard, who reprises his role as Ken Masters from the original fan film. Last month, the Japanese Nintendo Direct teased a brand new Ace Attorney game; one that would be completely different from what we expect. Well, details have finally emerged, and it turns out “different” is a huge understatement.

Tentatively titled The Great Ace Attorney, this title is set to be the start of a new spinoff franchise. Players will take control of Naruhodō Ryūnosuke, who is possibly directly related to Phoenix Wright considering their Japanese surnames are the same. Taking place in Japan during the Meiji Period, (1868-1912), it’s easy to imagine how the legal system, setting and characters will possibly bring some fresh ideas to the lawyer’s desk. And with series creator Shu Takumi back on the job, it looks like this bold direction is being placed in good hands.

Briefly: We already know how awesome some of Machinima’s web series can be (just look at Mortal Kombat: Legacy), and now the network is set to adapt another classic fighter for the small screen.

Machinima and Capcom have announced Streen Fighter: Assassin’s Fist, a new series that is currently without a premiere date (but based on the teaser trailer, I sure hope that it’s soon).

Here’s the series description:

The live-action series, which is distributed by Content Media, is the brainchild of Ansah (The Bourne Ultimatum, Snow White and the Huntsman), a member of the creative team behind the hugely successful fan film Street Fighter: Legacy—which has received almost 5,000,000 views to date. Ansah, who also stars in the series (Akuma), wrote the script with Christian Howard, who reprises his role as Ken Masters from the original fan film. The series also stars Mike Moh as Ryu, Togo Igawa (47 RoninMemoirs of a Geisha, The Last Samurai) as Gōtetsu, Akira Koieyama as Gōken, Gaku Space as Gōki, Mark Killeen (300: Rise of an EmpireThe Dark Knight Rises) as Mr. Masters, and Hal Yamanouchi as Senzo. Through the coming of age story of Ken & Ryu, we are shown the back story of some of the game’s most iconic characters, and over the course of the series we will see how the past, present, and future of all of those characters are intertwined, as the battle to become Ansatsuken Master threatens to tear apart another generation of brothers.

We all know how cool Street Fighter: Legacy was (head here if you haven’t seen it), which makes this project even more exciting.

With Ultra Street Fighter IV’s announcement last summer, along with it came the promise of five new fighters that are ready to jump into the ring. Four of those five included Street Fighter X Tekken alumni Poison, Hugo, Elena and Rolento with the fifth being shrouded in mystery. Some thought it would be Azura, the star of Capcom’s Azura’s Wrath. Not a bad guess considering his game had DLC pitting him against Ryu and Akuma in a Street Fighter type fight. A good guess doesn’t equal a right one however, since Capcom put the speculation to rest with the announcement of Decapre as the final addition to the already large roster.

Who is Decapre and why should you care? As one of M. Bison’s “dolls” from Street Fighter Alpha 3, she was in the background of one of the game’s victory poses. Like Cammy before she escaped, her role is to serve as one of the evil dictator’s hand picked fighters who’s ultimate goal is to serve as an extra body for him to inhabit. Why he wants to place his soul in the bodies of genetically modified girls is anyone’s guess, but hey! I won’t judge.

Watching her in action, Decapre looks A LOT like Cammy. In fact, variations of her Cannon Strike and Cannon Spike moves can be seen in her reveal trailer below, along with Bison’s own Psycho Crusher. Overall, she looks like an interesting blend of playstyles, but I would have preferred someone more original, especially since the other four were essentially ripped from Street Fighter X Tekken aside from a few differences. Of course, we won’t be able to tell for sure until the game releases in June of this year as a DLC add on to Arcade Edition for $14.99. If you don’t own it, a standalone game with all previous DLC included will launch in August for the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 for $39.99.

Is Decapre going to be joining your go to fighter list when Ultra releases? Is there anyone else you would have rather included? And how cruel was it to tease R. Mika in the trailer? That’s right my fellow Hunters, the much anticipated Monster Hunter 4 is getting an Ultimate release in the West! The series head producer Ryozo Tsujimoto outlines it all below!

If you’re new to the whole Monster Hunter series let me bring you up to speed. Monster Hunter is one of the biggest franchises Capcom has, and has become one of the must have titles for the portable market. It takes place in a fantasy world where players, well hunt monsters. The big attraction to the game is the sheer size of some of the beasts you fight. It also forces players to rely on their skills and not an arbitrary leveling system. If you’re a pro hunter you can kill some high rank monsters with starting rank gear. Repeating hunts over and over again in the hopes of getting those rare drops from the monsters never feels like work, the grind is very enjoyable.

You can get your hands on Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate sometime in 2015 for the Nintendo 3DS. Chances are a WiiU release will be quickly following.

I wasn’t really a fan of the first Dead Rising title (great idea, but pretty poor execution in my opinion… it got boring really fast), and never actually had an opportunity to play Dead Rising 2. That being said, as soon as I get my hands on an Xbox One, Dead Rising 3 will be the game that goes with it.

Capcom today debuted the game’s launch trailer, and as expected, it looks great. Dead Rising 3 seems to be pulling in great reviews so far, so I really can’t wait to play it!

Capcom today launched a fantastic story trailer for the title, showing off a little of Nick Ramos’ journey from simple mechanic to possibly-the-only-hope-for-humanity. The game looks cinematic as hell (which I’m big on), and some of the zombie numbers that you see onscreen are breathtaking.

Probably the best launch title for the Xbox One, Dead Rising 3 looks to be the perfect combination of the wackiness we’ve come to know from the series, and a more serious zombie disaster. Well the guys over at IGN got to play the first 25 minutes of the game, and they were kind enough to record it and put it up on YouTube! Check it out wont ya?

Last year, Capcom released a very special (and very expensive) 25th anniversary Street Fighter set that included a plethora of Street Fighter games, anime films, and soundtracks, plus a feature-length documentary titled I Am Street Fighter. The well received documentary has never been made available outside that set… until now.

Capcom has generously just added I Am Street Fighter to their official YouTube channel.

The documentary explores the history of the prominent and beloved series, and is sure to please both casual fighting fans and Street Fighter die-hards alike (right Juan Carlos?).

Briefly: I’ve never played Monster Hunter before, but I know just how insanely excited fans get at every new title. My 3DS is hankering for a new title, should the latest Monster Hunter be it?

Capcom has debuted a Japanese trailer for the upcoming Monster Hunter 4, featuring our first look at many locales, characters, and of course, monsters that we’re bound to meet in the game.

Monster Hunter 4 hits Japan on September 14th. A North American release date has not been set, so until then, take a look at the trailer below, and hope that Capcom has a heart.

If you were crazy enough to wake up at the crack of dawn today, you might have caught the latest Nintendo Direct presentation. The video mostly covered games that we knew were coming with one huge exception. After years of silence and months of doubt, it was finally confirmed that Professor Layton vs Ace Attorney will be hitting Western shores in 2014.

The top hat professor and the turnabout attorney were first shown to collaborate back in 2010, with its release in Japan following suit last year. Hype levels were through the roof, but a long bout of silence combined with Ace Attorney Investigations 2 staying in Japan and Ace Attorney 5 getting a digital only release, fans like myself were afraid that the additional popularity boost from the good professor might not have been enough. Thankfully, after much objection from the masses, today proved that this wasn’t the case, (pun very much intended.)

It’s safe to say that we’ll have all the investigating, puzzle solving and sharp dressed gentlemen we can handle in 2014. Keep an eye out for additional information on Professor Layton vs Ace Attorney, as well as details for the upcoming releases of Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies and the recently announced Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy as they become available.

Dead Rising 3 is set to take place in Los Angeles (but not really), and takes place 10 years after Dead Rising 2. Just as in its predecessors, everything you find in this world is a weapon. You’ll need ’em, as these zombies are more aware and have the ability to alert other zombies in the area. This, in turn, can cause a horde of zombies to surround you and, well, use your imagination. Returning to the franchise better than ever, combining weapons is a must in order to survive the game. Doing combos with these special weapons will earn you more xp and just overall look a lot cooler.

As for the map, the size is bigger. A lot bigger. While Dead Rising 1  and Dead Rising 2 aren’t exactly GTA caliber maps, you can expect Dead Rising 3‘s city to be “way bigger than Dead Rising 1 and 2 combined.” As you can imagine, walking around isn’t necessarily always going to be your primary mode of transportation. In DR3, you’ll be able to drive cars through the city. However, don’t expect to be driving through hordes of zombies. Zombies will in fact be hanging off the side of your car, in front, and in back. This in turn will hamper you abilities. Nevertheless, I’m sure gamers will enjoy driving through the game’s four major districts.

Perhaps the coolest thing about DR3 is the fact that players will have the ability to go into any building at any time without any loading. Don’t expect to see the same building twice, as DR3 will not contain replicated buildings. Another cool thing to expect is the ability to get your combo weapons out of safe house lockers at any time (think Far Cry 3).

SmartGlass will be integrated into Dead Rising 3‘s story in an interesting way. Players will have the ability to do side quests, look through maps, and find story content through SmartGlass. In DR3, the player will eventually find a handheld PDA that belonged to an agent who has since been murdered by zombies. This PDA will be accessible through SmartGlass. Players will also be able to receive phone calls from in game characters.

As far as gameplay goes, players will have the ability to play the game in a serious manner, or, if you’re like me, a goofy manner. Or perhaps you can dress yourself in a mix-and-match’d shark costume and go about the game in a totally serious manner. That works too. What’s more exciting is that gamers will be able to enter the Nightmare mode, which is more like the classic Dead Rising gameplay in which there is a timetable and much higher difficulty as opposed to playing the game in a casual do-what-you-want setting.

Lastly, any and all Kinect support is optional! No need to embarrass yourself should you complete this game with a partner!

At Comic Con, Capcom announced that they were digging up one of their classic side scrolling platformer franchises in a much anticipated return. Before you get too excited, no, it’s not Mega Man. BUT… when Strider is the game in question, it’s hard to be disappointed.

Debuting in 1989 as an arcade game that was praised for its innovation while being infamous for its difficulty, Strider was one of Capcom’s early successes, but would fade into obscurity until the ninja bad ass rose to prominence in Marvel vs Capcom. His new found fame was quickly followed by an arcade and Playstation sequel that received a very limited run, but nothing else came out of the character’s revival. Fast forward 12 years, and suddenly he’s once again heavily featured in Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3, leading us to this announcement. Hmm, I sense a pattern.

With developer Double Helix at the helm, (of Silent Hill: Homecoming fame and the same guys behind the upcoming Killer Instinct,) Strider looks to be coming along nicely. Promising a Metroidvania style world to explore, plenty of action and top of the line platforming, I’m excited to see the series make its return.

While crossover games have become pretty common in Japan, these games are usually a localization nightmare on other shores. With so many different companies holding the licenses to each series, some gaming gems, like most of the Super Robot Taisen series, (featuring Gundam and Macross units,) and Namco X Capcom, have eluded gamers throughout most of the world. That is, until now, with the release of Project X Zone. A pseudo-sequel to NXC using a battle system similar to SRT, characters from Sega, Namco Bandai and Capcom have joined forces in this turn based strategy RPG. But fan service aside, this is a game that managed to stay entertaining for hours upon end, but not without some major repetition.

Project X Zone tells the epic tale of Mii, the heiress to an ancient artifact that has been passed down for generations, and her ninja butler Kogoro. Once mysterious enemies appear and steal the artifact, a rift in dimensions brings heroes and villians together from the universes of Street Fighter, Darkstalkers, Resident Evil, Tekken, .dot Hack, Virtua Fighter and Valkyria Chronicles amongst many others, (including Bruce f’ing Willis as John McClain! Sort of!)  These would-be allies are now forced to find their way home and bring order back to the dimensions. Okay, look… that’s about as deep as the story gets. Sure, it’s simple, but it serves as an excuse to have Mega Man fight side by side with Gemini Sunrise from Sakura Wars. What makes up for the bare bones story is the characterization of each unit. I was expecting a somewhat rushed translation since this is getting such a limited run, but I was surprised at how much I laughed out loud at the in jokes, references and nods to fans. It’s great when the translation team spares no expense at getting everyone right, especially when there are so many characters to work with.

Game play combines traditional strategy mechanics with some light fighting game features thrown in. Each unit travels across a grid based map and starts with three attacks, each of which will launch enemies into the air or bounce them against the wall. Chaining attacks without letting foes touch the ground does more damage, builds up more EXP points and charges up the XP meter, (meaning Cross Power… Don’t ask.) What seems like simple button mashing in the beginning becomes more timing based, since boss enemies have huge amounts of HP with regenerating shields that charge when they touch the ground. Did I mention that connecting attacks at the last second before the bad guys land nets critical hits, more than doubling the damage inflicted? An RPG that lets you control critical hits based on skill? Why didn’t anyone think of this before?

As the game progresses, players unlock two member units. These are preset, so Dante will always fight with Dimitri for example. But Solo units, single characters ranging from Ghosts and Goblins to Fighting Vipers can be attached to each pair in any way the player chooses. Solo units act as support, and can be summoned mid battle to extend combos and inch out extra damage. To get the most out of each battle, other pair units can give support too, if the attacking unit is standing near them when the battle starts. Utilizing support from Solo and pair units is essential for victory, but how you will use them is another story.

If the main unit’s attack connects simultaneously with a support attack, a cross hit initiates, keeping the enemy frozen in place. This technique builds extra XP, as well as allowing the XP cap of 100% to increase to a maximum of 150%. The more XP, the more chances to trigger area clearing multi attacks, special skills that range from healing to stat boosting, and single super moves that can close out a combo for huge damage. The drawback? Initiating cross hits in the wrong spot can make your attacks miss, and attacks in this state cannot inflict critical hits. What’s more important, damage or XP? This is where the real strategy comes in, since the battle system makes most fights pretty easy once you get the hang of comboing.

Battles in PXZ are chaotic good fun!

If low on XP, items can be used in a similar ways as skills, but can only be obtained through defeating enemies or breaking shields. So sometimes, it might just be more advantageous to defeat all of the enemies before fighting a boss, (especially since there’s no grinding outside of missions,) or even letting the boss regain their shield for extra loot, (since there are no shops.) Even if you do make a mistake, a quicksave option can be accessed at any time, letting you retrace your steps back to when you made that one bad move. The only problem here is that there are 15 save slots but only one quicksave, so if your friends, family or significant other(s) are playing, chances are your quicksave will be long gone.

But going back to the simplicity of the battle system, the one major flaw I found with Project X Zone is a lack of variety. Most maps are laid out similarly aside from treasure chests scattered throughout the stage, and aside from a handful of maps where certain teammates take priority, a fight is over once your team is wiped out or the enemy’s is. Occasionally, additional objectives will be put in place, like reaching a spot or character on the map in X amount of time, but once the novelty of seeing Tales characters working with Shining Force heroes wears off, if you find the battle system tiring, you’re not going to see the end of the game.

I personally was addicted to landing critical hits and pulling off perfect combos all the way through, but even with the fighting game mechanics in place, I can’t see anyone other than hardcore fans of these characters, or long time SRPG gamers reaching the credits in this 40ish hour adventure. Even then, some popular characters don’t debut until WAY late in the game. I’m talking 20 hours in… so I can see people losing patience before getting to their favorites. Throw in end game maps can go on for around two hours each, and its easy to see how polarizing the final stretch can be. But if you can’t get enough, there’s even a new game plus with powered up bosses that drop rare equipment! You might never stop playing!

Yes, that’s X, Zero, Kos-Mos, T-elos, Ulala and the Space Harrier Girl on screen at once. Wait, does she have a name?

Even for those strategy fans though, this game is significantly easier than most in the genre, (which was perfect for me since I’m usually terrible at these games.) Throw in the fighting game mechanics and a literal army of popular, yet niche characters across three great companies, and you get a highly entertaining experience that a broad range of gamers will get entertainment out of. Well animated sprites and a large collection of music rounds out a package that hits us right in the nostalgia gland, and while I doubt most will see the story through to the end, Project X Zone provides as much fun as one wants to get out of it. If nothing else, at least it finally got Mega Man and Tron Bonne on the 3DS!

Pros:

  • A huge cast of characters!
  • Easily accessible game mechanics that blend genres.
  • Plenty of game to sift through, including a new game plus.
  • Strong animations, music and script.

Cons:

  • Weak story.
  • Repetitive battles that may wear thin before the credits roll.
  • Too easy compared to other games in the genre.
  • Multi hour fights late in the game.

As most fans of the Ace Attorney series probably know, the last few years have been a turbulent ride for everyone’s favorite spikey haired defense lawyer. Fans were divided over the handling over the last major entry in the franchise, Apollo Justice. Two Edgeworth spinoffs would see releases, but due to poor sales of the first, the second never saw a release outside of Japan. When Dual Destinies was confirmed for the States, it was announced that it was coming as digital only, a first for the series since it debuted here on the DS in 2004. Needless to say, while it’s great that it didn’t pull and Edgeworth and not come out at all, many would be defense attorney’s would rather have the option of a physical copy. While Phoenix and crew may have hit hard times as of late, my biggest fear was that shifting focus back to the original protagonist would completely ignore the plot lines started in Apollo Justice. After some hands on time in the courtroom however, it’s safe to say these fears were put to rest with the defense.

WARNING: Minor Case 1 spoilers may follow!

The demo starts off much darker than previous Ace Attorney titles, (which is hard to do when murder is the norm for each case.) During a previous trial, a bomb went off in the middle of the court room. Apollo was the acting attorney and was injured during the blast. Now, a young girl who was in the room when the blast went off is being accused of the crime, and with Apollo’s injuries keeping him out of action, it’s up to Phoenix Wright to stand up for their client and come out of retirement to stand in Apollo’s place.

While Phoenix may have a reputation as a legendary defense attorney, years being away from the bench has left him a little rusty. His ability to bluff his way through a trial however, is alive and well. The court sections play just like they have since the second game. In order to spot contradictions in witness testimony, players must compare their statements to the evidence and confront them when caught in a lie. If there aren’t any errors in their statements, witnesses can be pressed for more information on each statement, potentially giving us an opening that might not have originally been there. But think carefully… Each mistake costs a certain amount of “health” so to speak, and once that bar is gone, the judge will throw your case out and declare your client guilty. You don’t want to live with that on your conscience, do you?

But as we’ve learned in some of the more recent games, sometimes witnesses are too calculating to be cracked. What’s one to do when there aren’t any contradictions in any statements? That’s where Athena Cykes comes in, the hotheaded best friend of the defendant, rookie attorney and Phoenix’s newest assistant. Athena comes equipped with a new Mood Matrix, which highlights each statement and shows you what emotions the witnesses are feeling when they say them. If for example, the person is feeling happy while discussing a ceiling collapsing on then, you know they’re either screwed in the head, or there’s more to the story that they’re telling. Combined with Phoenix’s Psyche Locks and Apollo’s Perceive ability, this power of psychology is a welcomed addition to this crazy world that gamers have fallen in love with.

Other than the game play, the new 3D animations look fantastic in motion. The writing is in top form, making me laugh out loud multiple times, (and getting strange stares from the people sitting around me in the process.) I’m happy to see that Apollo isn’t being replaced, and instead is standing side by side with Phoenix as dual protagonists. As a side note, I just have to mention how much I love these E3 demos. Like Ghost Trick before it, this game had exclusive dialogue reminding me I’m playing a demo, (“I hope you can win in 10 minutes Mr. Wright. This is just a demo after all.”) Many old and new faces are promising to show up, and if the time I had with the demo is any indication, whether its digital or not, Ace Attorney fans can start getting excited over this newest game giving us another day in court.

What many believed to be impossible has finally happened.

After years of pleading from fans around the world, Mega Man is confirmed to be in the next Super Smash Bros. game, which will see a release on both the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS consoles.

In the final moments of this morning’s Nintendo Direct, a trailer for the newest entry in the Super Smash Bros. series closed out with a blazing siren indicating that a new challenger was approaching. As Mario, Link, Donkey Kong, and Kirby fight it out, the camera pans up to reveal the silhouette of Capcom’s blue bomber looking down at the iconic Nintendo characters before he himself joins the fight.

Cross over games are all the rage right now, but Project X Zone is particularly in demand. Releasing early in the 3DS’s lifespan in Japan, fans in the west begged for the title until it was finally confirmed last year. Earlier today, a demo emerged on the eShop in anticipation for its June 25th release, and I jumped on the chance to bring the worlds of Sega, Namco and Capcom together.

Acting as a spiritual successor to the Japan only Namco X Capcom, Project X Zone is a grid based strategy RPG with units consisting of characters from series such as Street Fighter, Dot.Hack and Sakura Wars, each with their own sets of moves. Unlike most games in the genre that will have you simply walk up to enemies and select text to attack, X Zone takes a more action oriented approach. Choosing between a list of moves, maximum damage is achieved through linking attacks, juggling enemies and utilizing support to keep them in the air. Each unit is either a pair of characters, (like Ryu and Ken,) or a group of three, with the odd one out acting as additional support, (including my favorite so far, Space Channel 5‘s Ulala.)

Field position plays a vital role, since allies within a unit’s attack radius can be called in for additional support. Attacks that connect simultaneously between different units and support creates a “cross” effect on the enemy, where the foe is frozen in place, making landing combos easier. Doing so also builds energy called XP, that can be stored to unleash devastating super moves or used for actions such as healing, counter attacking and defending.

It’s not enough to simply bash away however, because much like a fighting game, enemy position is important when it comes to landing combos. I accidentally crossed enemies in the air where they were too high for my main characters to make contact with on my first run for example, and trust me, that really sucks. Other than wanting to actually be able to hit your enemies, continuously juggling awards more damage, items and experience, so you’ll want to plan your attacks accordingly if you want to make the most out of them.

I’ll be honest, I suck at strategy games; but blending action, fighting and RPG elements into the genre might finally be a winning combination. I left the demo very impressed, and I can’t wait for more when June 25th comes around. With the final version featuring characters from Tekken, Soul Calibur, Virtua Fighter, Resident Evil, Devil May Cry and Mega Man, there’s sure to be a character for even the pickiest of gamers. Get to your local game store and pre order fast, because this game screams niche. If the demo is any indication, you really don’t want to miss out.

If anyone needed further proof that Japanese gamers are a bit spoiled, one need only look at the bevy of Monster Hunter 4 goods coming to Japan later this year.

Earlier last week, Capcom Japan announced that not only one, but two Monster Hunter 4-themed 3DS XL systems will be released in Japan—a Felyne White model and the ultra-sleek Goa Magara Black model. The price for these limited-edition 3DS XL models is yet to be announced, but if anyone ever wanted to import a Japanese 3DS system, either one would be the perfect place to start.

As if the absence of any news regarding a North American release for those sexy handhelds wasn’t enough, then the following may be a dash of salt on the wound.

Today, Capcom Japan announced a limited-edition Monster Hunter 4 bundle will be available to Japanese gamers this September. For 10,990 yen (roughly $110), fans receive a 3DS XL case, complete with strap and a pair of Monster Hunter screen cleaners, and the jewel of the set—a Monster Hunter figure by Sentinel, complete with display stand, weapons, and three different landscape textures. Again, there has yet to be any word if the bundle would be available to North American Monster Hunter fans. Here’s hoping Capcom will have some good news at E3 regarding the availability of both the limited-edition 3DS systems and the Monster Hunter 4 bundle for North American gamers.
