Brad Pitt’s got a new movie coming out soon and it looks pretty damn good. We’ve got the first trailer for Killing Them Softly. Check it out and let us know what you think of it.

Jackie Cogan is a professional enforcer who investigates a heist that went down during a mob-protected poker game.

Killing Them Softly stars Brad Pitt, Richard Jenkins, James Gandolfini, Ray Liotta and Sam Shepard. It’s directed by Andrew Dominik and opens October 12th.

A few weeks ago, we speculated as to who the villains might be in Thor: The Dark World. Well guess what, we were right! Thor will indeed face off against Malekith The Accursed and his Dark Elves of Svartalfheim.

Deadline is reporting that Christopher Eccleston (the ninth Dr. Who and Destro in GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra) has been cast as Malekith The Accursed. Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Natalie Portman, and Anthony Hopkins are all set to reprise their roles from the first film and Zachary Levi has also joined the cast The sequel begins filming Thursday in the UK and is set for release Nov. 15, 2013.

Today USA Today showed the pictures from the remake of the 1984 classic Red Dawn. The film was shot in 2009 but was delayed due to MGM’s financial problems. The film is finally set to hit theaters on November 21st but not without some big changes having been made to the final film.

When it was shot four years ago it had a cast of then unknowns, some have since become break-out stars. The cast includes Chris Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson, Adrianne Palicki,Isabel Lucas and Josh Peck. The film had an entirely different enemy army when it was shot but it has since been changed digitally for the final version as well as being re-edited.

“Originally it was the Chinese,” Hutcherson says. “And then there was the thought that the Chinese own most of the companies making movies and that maybe it wasn’t the best idea in the world.”

In the end, the attacking forces became the North Koreans (aided by the Chinese and Russians).

Like the original 1984 version communism is the ultimate villain. The first film starred a cast of then up and comers such as Patrick Swayze, Jennifer Grey (no body puts Baby in the corner), Lea Thompson, C. Thomas Howell, and introduced the world to Charlie Sheen. The film was set in Colorado and saw the cast play a group of teens who band together as “the Wolverines,” a guerilla unit, who fight an invasion of Soviet, Cuban and Nicaraguan forces at the dawn of World War III.  If you haven’t seen it I recommend you check it out. It’s currently available on Netflix Instant Streaming.

Have you been reading DC’s Animal Man and Swamp Thing? If you’re not then you should be. Since these books launched as part of “The New 52” they have constantly been two of my favourite comics on my pull list. Jeff Lemire is the writer on Animal Man and along with Scott Snyder, writer on Swamp Thing, they have each been setting the stage for a big crossover story between the two characters titled “Rotworld” and it’s coming very soon.

Jeff Lemire had this to say regarding  the ‘Rotworld’ prelude which begins in Animal Man #12 and Swamp Thing #12, both out today:

“The Rot has won. The End is here.

Rotworld is the biggest story I’ve been a part of since I started writing for DC Comics. If you’ve been reading both Animal Man and Swamp Thing (and if you haven’t you should start right now!) you’ll know that Scott “Swampy” Snyder and I have been building and planning this story for over a year. It’s massive in scope and it will have lasting consequences for both The Baker family and Alec Holland.

This is the DCU, obliterated and consumed by The Rot. It’s a sprawling post-apocalyptic saga with only heroes and villains with some connection to The Red or The Green left to fight. I think readers will be surprised to see not only Animal man and Swamp Thing but dozens of characters from throughout the New 52 universe involved in the story. Some of them already lost to The Rot others will appear in surprising ways.

The whole Rotworld story wouldn’t be possible without the amazing artists we have working with us. Yanick Paquette is killing it on Swamp Thing and I’m lucky enough to be working with one of my favorite artists Steve Pugh, as well as my Animal Man Annual collaborator Timothy Green II, both beautifully colored by Lovern Kindzeirski.

Rotworld is a true labor of love for all of us, we’re working hard to create a really special story and we hope you come along for the journey. But stick close, you never know what might be lurking out there in the Rotlands…”

Well it’s a move that should come as a surprise to know one. With Ridley Scott’s Prometheus having grossed a good, but not great, $303 million globally on it’s $130 million budget it was only a matter of time until Fox began developing a sequel.

According to THR Fox and Ridley Scott are pushing ahead and are beggining to move forward with a sequel. They are talking with new screenwriters due to the fact that Damon Lindelof, who co-wrote the first film, may not be available. Stars Michael Fassbender and Noomi Rapace are signed on already.

“Ridley is incredibly excited about the movie, but we have to get it right. We can’t rush it,” says Fox president of production Emma Watts, who also has overseen the successful reboots of the X-Men and Planet of the Apes franchises by turning over the reigns to innovative filmmakers.

The sequel is expected to land in theaters in 2014 or 2015.

I know Geekscape has plenty of zombie fans out there, especially fans of Valve’s Left 4 Dead video game series. Here’s a little treat especially for you guys. Check out this gory and not safe for work fan film titled Seriously Left 4 Dead. The short was directed by Jason Forge. Check it out and let us know what you think.

These days movies and television are all about rebooting everything. If you needed further proof of this just turn on your TV and look at shows like Hawaii Five-0 and 90210 or movies like the upcoming Total Recall. Hollywood truly is all about remakes.

Get ready for the latest reboot! TV’s favourite family The Brady Bunch is the latest show to get the reboot treatment. Deadline is reporting that CBS is developing the reboot and it’s being co-developed and executive produced by Vince Vaughn. The original Brady Bunch was created by Sherwood Schwartz and it ran on ABC from 1969-1974.

In the new Brady Bunch, written by Mike Mariano (Raising Hope, My Name Is Earl), a divorced Bobby Brady, with children of his own, is remarried to a woman who also has kids, and together they also share a child. In addition, their ex-spouses are still part of their lives. The changes in the premiere reflect the evolution of family dynamics over the past four decades. Back in 1969, Schwartz wanted Carol to be a divorcée but the network refused, so the end of her first marriage was never addressed.

Lloyd Schwartz, the son of Sherwood Schwartz, will executive produce the reboot along with Vaughn, Victoria Vaughn and Peter Billingsley through Vince Vaughn’s Wild West Picture Show Prods.

Remember when Warner Bros. released the IMAX prologue for The Dark Knight Rises last winter and everyone freaked out about how muffled Bane’s voice was? Of course you remember, we all remember! Geeks don’t forget these type of things. Well check out this video which shows Bane’s voice from the prologue versus his redubbed voice for the final release.

So what do you think? Was the final version better, worse, or should they have found a middle ground between the two? Let the mphmpmh mphmphpm! Wait, what?

THR is reporting that director Cameron Crowe (Almost Famous, Vanilla Sky, Say Anything) will begin shooting his next film this fall. The yet-to-be titled film, written by Crowe, will be a romantic drama and will star Emma Stone. They are currently looking for their leading man.

The film is set up at Sony Pictures and will be produced by Scott Rudin (Moonrise Kingdom, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, The Social Network). Crowe’s last film was 2011’s We Bought a Zoo, which starred Matt Damon.

I’ve been  a fan of Cameron Crowe for years, Almost Famous is my favourite movie, so I’ll be keeping my eyes out for news on this newest film. Plus, the fact that Emma Stone is in it only makes me more interested in it and I’m sure the movie will have a great soundtrack!

Random facts: Cameron Crowe wrote the screenplay, which was based on his book, for Fast Times at Ridgemont High

Last week we showed you where Heath Ledger got his inspiration for The Joker in The Dark Knight. It only seemed fitting to follow that one up this week with one for The Dark Knight Rises.

By now most of us have all seen The Dark Knight Rises, those of you who haven’t need to stop reading right this second and go see it! Anyway, if you’ve seen it then you’ve seen Tom Hardy’s awesome take on Bane but did you wonder where he got his inspiration for the character? It would seem that he got his inspiration from one of his earlier roles actually. Back in 2002, Hardy co-starred in Star Trek: Nemesis as the villainous Praetor Shinzon, a clone of Captain Jean-Luc Picard. Check out Hardy’s audition tape and you can see the earliest glimpses of Bane in the performance.

Hardy also told Vulture at the premiere for TDKR that “It’s based on a guy named Bartley Gorman, he’s the king of the gypsies, and he’s a boxer, a bare-knuckle boxer, an Irish traveler, a gypsy.”

So there you go, Bane was essentially a mix of Patrick Stewart and the king of the gypsies in a mask and juiced up. “Let the games begin…make it so!”

By the power of grayskull! Deadline is reporting that Jon M. Chu, the director of the troubled and delayed GI Joe: Retaliation, is in early talks to direct Masters of The Universe. The movie is set up at Sony Pictures and would be a live-action movie based on the Mattel toy-line  He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.

Escape Artists entertainment is signed on as producers and is said to have “a strong script turned in by the writing team of Alex Litvak and Mike Finch”. No other details are currently known, but I’m just hoping I get to see some Battle Cat and Orko this time around and that it’s better than 1987’s Dolph Lundgren version.

I think we all  (or at least any kid from the 80’s will) remember that version of Masters of The Universe. I’m sure some people try to forget that one still exists. I loved it as a kid but then again I was 4 years old when it came out so I didn’t know any better. I still love the movie, only now I love it for all the wrong reasons. It’s so bad that it’s good…although Frank Langella was pretty badass as Skeletor!

Frank Langella as Skeletor creeped the hell out of me as a kid!

Taken 2 doesn’t hit theaters until October 5th but here’s a ‘making of’ featurette to hold you over until then!

Liam Neeson returns as Bryan Mills, a retired CIA operative who decimated an Albanian slave-trading ring to rescue his kidnapped daughter. A year later, on a trip to Istanbul, Mills gets a surprise visit from his daughter, Kim, and his wife, Lenore. The happy reunion turns sour when Lenore is taken by gangsters serving Murad, father of one of the fallen Albanian criminals. With his wife held hostage and Kim on the run, Mills must once again use his lethal skills to track down his wife and eliminate all who stand in his way.

I don’t know how these movies are still getting made. I stopped watching them after I see the first one but for those of you who love you some Paranormal Activity here’s the teaser trailer preview to hold you over until the actual teaser comes out:

Paranormal Activity 4 opens October 19th.

Is there anyone out there craving a prequel to Stanley Kubrick’s amazing film The Shining? Yeah, I didn’t think so, but apparently Warner Bros. feels differently.

A source at Warner Bros. (who’s not authorized to talk about it publicly, so they leaked it) told LA Times that the studio has tapped  writer-producer Laeta Kalogridis and her partners Bradley Fischer and James Vanderbilt to develop a prequel to the film. The LA Times article states that “A WB spokeswoman cautioned that any “Shining” prequel was in a very early stage and not even formally in development”.

The prequel would focus on events prior to Jack Torrance (played brilliantly by Jack Nicholson in the original), his wife and little Danny’s fateful stay at the Overlook Hotel. What that could be is anyone’s guess, but do we even need/want the prequel? Kubrick’s film is a cult classic and is engrained in our minds. Could any follow-up to The Shining, be it a prequel or sequel, even live up to the original? Hollywood’s track record seems to prove that prequels and sequels to such cult classics rarely, if ever, live up to their predecessors. Take the recent prequel/reboot/remake of The Thing as a prime example of this.

This prequel isn’t the only continuation that’s currently in the works. Stephen King is working on a sequel to his novel The Shining, on which the movie was based, titled Doctor Sleep. Here’s the synopsis for the novel:

Stephen King returns to the characters and territory of one of his most popular novels ever,The Shining, in this instantly riveting novel about the now middle-aged Dan Torrance (the boy protagonist of The Shining) and the very special twelve-year-old girl he must save from a tribe of murderous paranormals. On highways across America, a tribe of people called The True Knot travel in search of sustenance. They look harmless—mostly old, lots of polyester, and married to their RVs. But as Dan Torrance knows, and tween Abra Stone learns, The True Knot are quasi-immortal, living off the “steam” that children with the “shining” produce when they are slowly tortured to death.

Haunted by the inhabitants of the Overlook Hotel where he spent one horrific childhood year, Dan has been drifting for decades, desperate to shed his father’s legacy of despair, alcoholism, and violence. Finally, he settles in a New Hampshire town, an AA community that sustains him, and a job at a nursing home where his remnant “shining” power provides the crucial final comfort to the dying. Aided by a prescient cat, he becomes “Doctor Sleep.”

Then Dan meets the evanescent Abra Stone, and it is her spectacular gift, the brightest shining ever seen, that reignites Dan’s own demons and summons him to a battle for Abra’s soul and survival. This is an epic war between good and evil, a gory, glorious story that will thrill the millions of hyper-devoted readers of The Shining and wildly satisfy anyone new to the territory of this icon in the King canon.

Well get ready folks because it looks like a follow-up of some kind is coming our way and it’s coming soon. But just remember, all work and no play make something something… eh I forgot. Oh well!

Well it looks like all hope in seeing a TV-version of the Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming comic-series Powers is not lost. Variety is reporting that FX hasn’t pulled the plug just yet. The series has been in development hell for quite sometime now.

A pilot was shot last year but rejected by FX topper John Landgraf, who asked scribe Charles “Chick” Eglee for a rewrite. The network had plans to do a reshoot of the pilot — with a completely new cast — but those plans have not gone forward and there is no immediate start date to put it back in front of the camera.

Jason Patric and Lucy Punch, who co-stars in the new Fox sitcom “Ben and Kate,” were in the original cast. Others in the ensemble were Charles S. Dutton, Titus Welliver and Carly Foulkes.

For those not familiar with the series, it follows homicide detectives Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim, who investigate crimes  involving “powers” (people with superpowers). The series began in 2000 under Image comics before shifting to Marvel’s Icon imprint in 2004.

I’m sad to see the Christian Walker part that Jason Patric was set to play being recast. I’m a fan of Patric and would love to see him in more stuff.  I’m okay with Lucy Punch’s role being recast as I have never been a big fan of hers. If you’re not familiar her name you’ve probably seen her before in movies like Bad Teacher and Dinner For SchmucksHopefully the powers that be (no pun intended) can get some quality actors for the parts now that they are recasting.

I’ll be keeping a look out for updates as they come out so be sure to check back.

Publicity shot of Jason Patric as Christian Walker from the ill-fated pilot

UPDATE: It appears that FX President John Landgraf has confirmed that this is happening and they have ordered four episodes! Earlier this week Bendis tweeted that he had read a script for a third episode of the show and Landgraf told IGN:

“Yeah. Brian has the benefit of reading scripts that I haven’t read! But what we ended up doing is hiring Chic Eglee, who had done the work on the pilot we shot. Not only to rewrite the pilot that we had shot, but to do three more episodes and put together a writing staff. So I think Brian has now read those scripts. I haven’t seen them yet. So we are going to end up having four scripts for Powers. And if we elect to move forward, yeah, I think we will just go back and reshoot the pilot from scratch, with a new cast in all probability.” So, does that mean we won’t see Jason Patric and Lucy Punch as Christian Walker and Deena Pilgrim? “I think there’s a possibility that some of the original cast members might return. Jason Patric certainly wants to look at the material and wants to render an opinion about whether he still wants to be involved in the project. But it’s just as likely, I think, that we’d just start from scratch and reshoot it.”

It looks as if the show really is moving forward.

Escorting the Queen to the opening ceremonies wasn’t the only appearance James Bond made tonight. A new TV spot for the latest 007 movie Skyfall premiered during the Olympic Ceremonies and boy is it amazing. I’ve already watched it about 5 times. I’m a die-hard James Bond fan and am eagerly counting the days until the new movie opens on November 9th.

Skyfall returns Daniel Craig to the role of Bond and also stars Javier Bardem, Naomie Harris, Berenice Marlohe, Ralph Fiennes, Albert Finney and Judi Dench. Sam Mendes is directing film.

Deadline is reporting that Marvel and ABC Studios are in talks to create a live-action drama series set within the Marvel cinematic universe.

“… the connection to the Avengers franchise would be light as the project is expected to be set in the universe and feature some of its themes and feel but may not include any characters from Joss Whedon’s blockbuster.”

The studios are in the earliest stages of development for the show. Some possible ideas being tossed around include a high-concept cop show. This is only the most current show to be in development at ABC, a series featuring the Hulk with Guillermo del Toro attached is also in the works. There are endless possibilities that the latest live-action drama could go. Maybe we could see a show focused on SHIELD agents, perhaps featuring characters from the latest Marvel One-Shot: Item 47? Only time will tell Marvelites, but you can be sure that we’ll keep you posted! Excelsior!

Ever wonder where Heath Ledger took his inspiration for his role as The Joker in The Dark Knight? It’s been said that Ledger based his chaotic disheveled look on that of Sid Vicious as well as incorporating Malcolm McDowell’s mannerisms from A Clockwork Orange. But what about the very distinct voice Ledger created for The Joker? Well, take a look at this  Tom Waits interview from 1979 and see if it reminds you of anyone…

AMC has decided not to renew The Killing for a third season. The show, which recently wrapped up its second season, followed the police investigation of the murder of a young girl. It was based on the Danish series of the same name. The first season was a hit but had fans crying out over the season finale. Season two sadly never regained the ratings of the first season. AMC and Fox TV Studios, producer of the show, both released statements.

The first season is available on Netflix instant streaming and I highly recommend it. I got hooked on it after fellow writer Shawn Madden suggested it to me. As much as I enjoyed the show I think it ending after two seasons was the right call. Season one was great and while I enjoyed the second season, it did seem to stretch things out as far as logic went. I did however really like the way they ended the series, the reveal of the killer was shocking and the series ended on a high note. The shows leads Mireille Enos and Joel Kinnaman both were fantastic in it though. It would seem that neither actor is hurting for work. Enos will next be seen in Gangster Squad and World War Z, while Kinnaman will bust his way onto screens as the new Robocop.

AMC’s press statement:

“After much deliberation, we’ve come to the difficult decision not to renew ‘The Killing’ for a third season.  AMC is incredibly proud of the show and is fortunate to have worked with such a talented team on this project, from showrunner Veena Sud and our terrific partners at Fox Television Studios to the talented, dedicated crew and exceptional cast.”

Fox TV Studios press statement:

“Fox Television Studios is extremely proud of ‘The Killing,’ the extraordinary writing staff and crew, and what we believe is one of the best casts on television. We will proceed to try to find another home for the show.”

Will doing press for their new movie The Campaign, Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis stopped by The Daily Show for an interview with Jon Stewart. It was a standard interview that quickly turned deadly serious and led to a hostage-like take over of the show (reminiscent of Hans Gruber taking over Nakatomi tower) by Ferrell and Galifinakis. Luckily Jon Hamm was around to save the day like John McClane. You can watch the horror for yourselves below…

Alexa Vega is best known as Carmen Cortez in Robert Rodriguez’s Spy Kids films. Well now she’s all grown up and has just landed herself a role in Rodriguez’s Machete Kills. She’ll be playing the role of KillJoy, a character which I can only assume to be a “sexy” killer. Why do I assume that you ask? That would be because Vega posted a picture of herself in costume on her Instagram page. Check it out below…

In Machete Kills, The U.S. government recruits Machete (Danny Trejo) to battle his way through Mexico in order to take down an arms dealer (Mel Gibson) who looks to launch a weapon into space.

Alexa Vega then…
Alexa Vega now as Killjoy!

Machete Kills is being directed by Robert Rodriguez and stars Danny Trejo, Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez, Sofia Vergara, Amber Heard, Mel Gibson and Charlie Sheen. Machete Kills his way into theaters in 2013.

Marvel’s released the pilot for their new animated series. It’s a new a super hero team with a classic name: The All Winners Squad!

How did this awe-inspiring assemblage come together? What role do they play within the Marvel Universe? Get answers to these and other mildly important questions in this new Marvel.com animated series featuring Squirrel Girl, Unicorn, Hypno-Hustler, Howard the Duck and more!

The “All-Winners Squad” is an ensemble of Marvel cult favorites. Together these previously overlooked characters are destined to make an impact in their own irreverent way. At long last, the All-Winners Squad will break free from comic book pages and obscure corners of the Internet, spreading their unbridled awesomeness to fans everywhere.

MTV News recently spoke with actor Sharlto Copley (District 9, The A-Team) during Comic-Con where he was promoting Neill Blomkamp’s film Elysium. Copley was briefly asked about Spike Lee’s upcoming remake of Old Boy in which he plays the villain.

“They’ve been very true to the spirit of it. It’s dark, it’s gritty. They’re not sort of softening it, which to me was important. And I’m very excited about that movie. I’m very excited about working with Spike and with Josh,” Copley said. “I think it’s going to be a film that is really worth redoing and make that idea that is such an unbelievable story accessible to maybe more people than it was originally.”

The movie is a remake of the 2003 Korean film Oldboy, directed by Chan-wook Park, which  was based on the manga by Nobuaki Minegishi and Garon Tsuchiya.

Josh Brolin is set to play Joe Douchett, an everyday man who has only five days and limited resources to discover why he was imprisoned in a hotel room for 15 years without any explanation. Copley will play the film’s villain Adrian Pryce.

Here’s the first trailer for Ang Lee’s Life of Pi. A scene from the movie was shown prior to Prometheus but seeing as it really showed an out of context scene I had no idea what to make of it. This trailer gives a glimpse at the extrodinary Life of Pi.

The story of an Indian boy named Pi, a zookeeper’s son who finds himself in the company of a hyena, zebra, orangutan, and a Bengal tiger after a shipwreck sets them adrift in the Pacific Ocean.

The film is based on the bestselling novel by Yann Martel and stars Suraj Sharma, Irrfan Khan, Gérard Depardieu and Toby Maguire. It opens November 21st.

It was only a matter of time before Disney started using Marvel characters on their shows. I’m actually amazed it took them this long. According to the Hero Complex, a slew of Marvel heroes and villians will be featured in a special episode of Disney XD’s Phineas and Ferb.

Announced at Comic-Con, “Phineas and Ferb: Mission Marvel” will have Spider-Man, Iron Man, Thor and Hulk drop into Danville but they’re not happy to be there — a scheme by Dr. Doofenshmirtz has robbed the mighty quartet of their powers.  The marooned heroes will have a fight on their hands with four super villains — the Red Skull, Whiplash, Venom and M.O.D.O.K. — who are working together with Dr. Doofenshmirtz.

Phineas and Ferb: Mission Marvel wont hit TV until the summer of 2013 but fear not fans, here’s a teaser to hold you over.

I have a 6 year old niece so I am well-versed in the greatness that is Phineas and Ferb. Anyone who’s worried that the Marvel characters will be poorly handled needn’t worry. I fully support this move on Disney and Marvel’s part. It’s a smart move and I’m sure it’s just the first of many to come.

Jack Bauer fans rejoice! It would seem that fans of the show ’24’ just got some good news. Kiefer Sutherland recently told  Craveonline that the script for the ’24’ movie is ready to go and they plan on filming it when Sutherland’s new show Touch wraps up it’s second season.

“Timing,” Sutherland said. “We didn’t have a script ready for that until very close to the end of ‘Touch.’ We knew we were coming back so there was a very finite window for me to make the film, to try to prep it, cast it and all of those other things. It was just unrealistic for Fox to try and make it, so they pushed it for next break.”

Fox pulled the plug back in March over budget and star salary issues. So with a script now ready to go the only question is not when it will get made but how much will it get made for. Fox previously only wanted to spend $30 million to get it made while producers felt they needed at least $40 million.

Hopefully they can come to an agreement on the budget and set a date to start filming. If the movie starts filming next year then the earliest it could come out is 2014. That would mean it’ll have been four long years since fans have seen Jack Bauer kick some ass. That’s four years too long if you ask me.  The world needs Jack Bauer and it needs him now!
