Geekscape Comics: First Look At ‘Uncanny Avengers’

I will admit it is a pretty cool line-up. Anything with Havok on the team means I’m reading it. I love Havok…but why is he back in a version of his classic suit? It also appears that Cap and Thor will definitely be getting more movie inspired looks after ‘AvX’.

Marvel vs Capcom: Origins Announced

Have you been hoping that Capcom would release the first Marvel vs Capcom or even Marvel Super Heroes? Well now you can have both in one! The game will merge both fighting styles giving you the choice of classic one-on-one battles or you can choose the three-on-three tag style of Marvel vs Capcom. The game features an online multiplayer mode with a limit of eight players in the lobby. Players that are waiting for their turn will be able to watch the match currently going on by using the spectator mode. Marvel vs Capcom: Origins will also feature HD graphics and the ability to save replays of players’ matches. The game will be coming to Xbox Live Arcade and Playstation Network for $14.99 (1200 Microsoft Points).

Marvel vs. Capcom: Origins brings two classic arcade fighters – “Marvel Super Heroes” and “Marvel vs. Capcom: Clash of Super Heroes” – together and to the modern generation. This September, fight like a hero, play like a legend!

Geekscape Comics: Five Spidey Stories You Should Read

In celebration of the release of ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ and Spideys upcoming 50th Anniversary I decided to compile a list of five Spider-Man stories I think you should all check out if you haven’t already.

5. Revenge Of The Sinister Six

Spider-Man #18-23

One of my all time favorite Spidey story-arcs is ‘Revenge Of The Sinister Six’. The story saw the group reunited once more in a bid to take over the world with alien weaponry. The line-up consisted of Doctor Octopus, Electro, Gog, Hobgoblin, Mysterio, Vulture. Sandman’s foster family was hit with a bomb and Sandman (believing Octopus had attacked his foster family as punishment for betraying him) joined the other members of the Sinister Six in a plan to take revenge upon Doctor Octopus.

Written and drawn by Erik Larsen, this story had it all. I mean, you had Spidey getting his ass kicked by the best of the best of his villains and even calling upon some of the coolest characters of the 90’s to back him up. We had the Hulk (in his Professor identity), the Fantastic Four, Sleepwalker, Deathlok, Nova, Solo, Cyborg X, and Ghost Rider all teaming up with Spider-Man to take on the Sinister Six. This was the six in their prime. They pulled out all the stops on this one. I mean they even fucking had Gog on their squad. Gog aka a gigantic reptilian humanoid from The Savage Land. I’ve actually gone back and re-read this story many times because it holds up. And I still love seeing the ending where a broken glass Sandman nearly shreds Doc Ock to death. If you can find a trade of it. Get it. If you can find the issues. Get them. You won’t be disappointed.

4. The Death Of Spider-Man

Ultimate Spider-Man #156-160, Ultimate Comics Avengers vs New Ultimates #1-6, Ultimate Fallout #1-6

This is one powerful story right here. Bendis really delivered a blow with the story-arc that really hits you once you’re done with it. Unlike some of the other stories I am going to to avoid talking too much about this one because it really is a story to be read from start to end. And if Peter Parker’s final words in issue #160 don’t hit you…I don’t know what will. This story not only does its death right but also does right by its death unlike many comic book “death stories”. Bendis is at top of his game here and Bagley’s artwork is phenomenal to go with it. You can most likely still find this available in trade or possibly even singular issues at your local shop.

3. Venom

Amazing Spider-Man #300, 315-317

Spider-Man had never fought a villain like Venom before. Regarded by some as Spideys best villain since The Green Goblin he had all of his same powers, was stronger and didn’t set off his spider sense. While some of Tom DeFalco’s dialogue is a bit weak in the issues you ignore it looking at Todd MacFarlane’s fantastic art work. If you’ve ever been a fan of Eddie Brock…this story is a must read.

2. Kraven’s Last Hunt

Amazing Spider-Man #293-294, Spectacular Spider-Man #131-132, Web Of Spider-Man #32-33

Kraven The Hunter was a villain that many people took as a joke until this story arc hit. This is one of the best read’s you can find. Kraven has hunted every other prey on earth but there is one that has eluded him. He decides to hunt down Spider-Man and buries him alive and then begins posing as him. J. M. DeMatteis and artist Mike Zeck craft an ultimate tale of revenge here with a very memorable ending.

1. The Night Gwen Stacy Died

Amazing Spider-Man #121-122

This right here is one of the most important Spider-Man stories ever written. If you sat and wondered why they were establishing the Gwen and Peter relationship in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ you definitely need to read this. he death of Gwen Stacy shocked the American comic book community. Previously, it had been unthinkable to kill off such an important character and this event was so revolutionary and important that it is one of the markers of the end of the Silver Age of comics. This two issue story-arc also included the death of Norman Osborn aka The Green Goblin and makes this already epic story even better.

For years people debated on how exactly she died. The original comic features a “snap” sound effect next to Gwen Stacy’s head in the panel in which Spider-Man’s webbing catches her, however some later reprints remove the effect. Many people believe that the whiplash from Peter grabbing her with his webbing caused it. Had he not webbed her though she would have fallen to her death regardless. In the end there was no way he could have saved her. Gwen is one of the few comic characters to die and stay dead. This arc gets my number one spot due I consider it to be quite possibly the most important Spider-Man story for everyone to read.

The Details On Marvel Studios Short Film ‘Item 47’

After ‘The Avengers’ hit theaters it was revealed that Marvel had a shot a short film in secret. The short film that will be featured on the Blu-Ray as well as receiving a screening during Comic-Con next week is titled ‘Item 47’. Now thanks to Entertainment Weekly we have details on the cast and just what the 12 minute ‘Item 47’ is about and how it is expanding the Marvel universe.

The film is the latest in the company’s series of shorts dubbed “One-Shots,” a comic book term for stories that wrap up in one issue. Lizzy Caplan (Party Down, pictured) and Jesse Bradford (Flags of Our Fathers) star as a down-on-their-luck couple who find one of the discarded alien guns from the finale to The Avengers — and proceed to make some incredibly bad decisions.

Item 47 refers to the gun itself, which S.H.I.E.L.D. would like very much to retrieve from the hapless young troublemakers. “The world is topsy-turvy now. There’s been an alien invasion, and things are crazy,” explains Marvel Studios co-president Louis D’Esposito, who directed the film himself. “So when this gun ­literally fell into their lap, this is a sign: We’re going to rob a few banks, we’re going to buy a boat, we’re going to the Caribbean, and all our problems will be solved.”

Two S.H.I.E.L.D. agents (Maximiliano Hernández, returning from Thor and The Avengers, and Lost’s Man in Black Titus Welliver, making his Marvel debut) are given the job of cleaning up the mess and stopping this modern Bonnie and Clyde (not coincidentally named Benny and Claire.)

The goal was to show some non-superpowered people reacting to the aftermath of The Avengers. “Anything that expands the world and shows you the more human elements of it, that just makes the world more colorful and fun for the average viewer,” says Eric Pearson, who wrote the screenplay for Item 47, as well as the previous two One-Shots: A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor’s Hammer and The Consultant.

 


Geekscape Movie Reviews: “The Amazing Spider-Man”

The Amazing Spider-Man swings it’s way into theaters today and it’s a ride you’ve got to take. Before I begin let me just say something though, we at Geekscape are big on doing our best to keep our reviews as spoiler free as possible. And that sometimes includes being vague on the plot of the movie because let’s face it, movies are just plain more enjoyable when you don’t know the (entire) story going into it.

Now, if you’ve seen the trailers for The Amazing Spider-Man then you obviously know the basic plot and big action beats of the movie… Or do you? Don’t take that last sentence as something negative because it’s not. The exact same thing could actually be said about The Avengers trailer and movie. What made Avengers so enjoyable (other than the awesome action scenes) was the characters. The difference between that movie and this one is that Spider-man is so great and enjoyable due to not just its characters, but the character relationships. We care what happens in this movie because we care about the characters. That is a major, major credit to director Marc Webb, whom also directed the indie-darling (500) Days of Summer. As he showed with (500) Days, director Marc Webb knows how to get that extra bit of magic out of his lead actors and he knows how to get us invested in the characters. He has proven himself to be fully capable of being the man for the job. Well done, sir. James Vanderbilt wrote the screenplay for this and it is yet another fine piece of writing from him. He previously wrote Zodiac and has also written the screenplay for the upcoming Robocop reboot. Here he has written characters that are fun and relatable and feel like real people. You won’t find his take on Peter Parker moping around and sobbing all emo-like for half the movie, sure he does cry but at least we actually get why he’s crying. The story may not be anything new or ground-breaking but I don’t think that’s something anyone was looking for going into this reboot. What we get is an updated take on the Spider-Man origin story that takes its inspiration from Marvel’s Ultimate Spider-Man and some amazingly shot action scenes.

Making Webb’s job that much easier is a terrific cast. Every actor in this movie shines in their roles. Andrew Garfield is perfectly cast as Peter Parker. Unlike the Raimi trilogy, in which I was never able to connect to Toby Maguire’s Peter Parker, I had no problem relating to this Peter Parker. There’s a reason Spider-Man is Marvel’s most popular and widely-known character, it’s because he is relatable to so many people on so many levels. Andrew Garfield feels like any other high school kid, albeit a genius level high school kid. He is awkward and shy around cute girls. That’s something we geeks (or at least this geek) can relate to for sure. And this spidey is funny, something that was sorely missing in the previous movies. He’s a wise-cracking smartass from Queens! Garfield just knocks it out of the park. Then there’s Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy, oh Emma Stone how I love you so. There I said it. It’s tough not to find yourself falling for her as Gwen Stacy. She is sweet and smart, who ever said a blonde couldn’t be smart? Take that stereotypes! She and Garfield have terrific chemistry in this and really sell the audience on the relationship between Peter and Gwen. Rhys Ifans as Curt Conners/The Lizard and while he isn’t given too much to do character-wise he does work wonders with what he’s given. It’s hard to imagine that this is the guy who once played Hugh Grant’s wacky room-mate in the rom-com Notting Hill. He is creepy as all get out in some parts of this and gives a good take on the old Jekyll and Hyde concept. Dennis Leary plays Captain Stacy, Gwen’s father, and while his sceen-time is limited he gets some of the movies funnier lines. Rounding out the cast is Martin Sheen and Sally Field as Uncle Ben and Aunt May. Mighty fine actors for some mighty important roles. They are both perfect but sadly underused in the movie. That is really one of my only gripes with this movie, I would have liked to see more of Uncle Ben and Aunt May, but that’s just goes to credit how great Martin Sheen and Sally Field are in this. Every one of these actors in this cast just give a great performance be their part big or small. My only other gripe is that we never get to hear Uncle Ben utter Spider-Man’s famous motto “with great power comes great responsibility,” guess we’ll have to wait for the sequel to hear that one.

The special effects and action scenes in this will be something that people will be ranting and raving about. The Lizard special effects aside (and those weren’t even very bad), the rest of the special effects were amazing. You will see and believe that a man can crawl up the side of buildings and swing through the streets of New York City. I hate 3D and saw this in 2D, but The Amazing Spider-Man makes me want to go back and see this again in 3D. Yeah, it looked that good. This is a movie that looks great and works due to it’s ability to make us connect with the characters on screen. It is clear when watching this that it is just the tip of the iceberg and only the beginning of a much larger story that is being set up for the sequels. After you see this movie you will forget all about the Sam Raimi movies. The Amazing Spider-Man is here and it’s a very welcome return of old web-head. This is a damn fine movie and a treat for all, but don’t take my word for it. You’ve got to see it for yourself. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed. Oh and be sure to stay during the credits, there’s a mid-credit scene.

Geekscape Comics: So, Guess Who’s Coming Back To The Marvel Universe?

Well, it looks like we may just be seeing the return of Jean Grey as one of the many changes that will occur during and after ‘AvX’. However, the return of Jean Grey might be more than meets the eye. Entertainment Weekly posted this image of her donning her classic Marvel Girl costume with a very mysterious line at the end of the article.

To answer your questions: Yes, this is Jean Grey — as in, the Jean Grey who’s been absent from Marvel Comics ever since dying for a second time back in the mid-’00s. And yes, she is modeling her vintage blue-and-yellow X-Men outfit from her Marvel Girl days. Does this mean that the fan-favorite character is finally returning? We can only confirm that her presence in the Marvel Universe will not be imaginary. This will not be part of the Ultimate line-up. She will not be a zombie hologram, like Shard on X-Factor What could this all mean? Check back tomorrow, when all the secrets will be revealed. (Or some of them, anyhow.)

I guess Marvel isn’t waiting for Comic-Con to pull out some of their big guns.

 

“The Amazing Spider-Man” Opens Bigger Than “The Avengers” Overseas?!

The Amazing Spider-Man doesn’t open for another two days, but it has already opened in 13 international markets such as Asia, Korea, Japan and India, collecting a combined total of $50.2 million. Believe it or not, the film actually opened to better numbers in some places than the juggernaut that is The Avengers did.

In Korea, Spider-Man grossed $13.4 million, which is 10% more than Avengers and is the third biggest opening for a Hollywood film in Korea. In India it grossed $6 million, making it the biggest opening ever for a Hollywood film. Oh and did I mentioned that it earned 74% more than Avengers?! In Japan it made $11.4 million and taking in 84% of the entire box office for the weekend.

These are awesome totals and great news for Sony’s relaunch of Marvel’s most popular character. In a few short days we will see how the wall-crawler will fare state-side.

10:00-11:00 After Earth

Enter the world of After Earth with an in-depth panel that gives you a behind-the-scenes look at the universe of the upcoming film and comic book. With the film now in post-production and set to hit theaters next June, screenwriter Gary Whitta (Book of Eli) and director of photography Peter Suschitzky (The Empire Strikes Back) will discuss the making of the film. They will be joined by comic book artist Beni Lobel (Spanish horror comic anthology Cthulu; G.I. Geekscape Comics: First Look At ‘Marvel Zombies: Halloween’

This October the creative team of Fred Van Lente and artist Alessandro Vitti will be bringing you a special holiday themed one-shot. ‘Marvel Zombies: Halloween’ returns us to a world filled with zombies where one kid just wants to go trick or treating.

Talkng about what we will see Van Lente says “The franchise is known for being really over the top and focusing on the insane idea of zombie-infected super heroes. And in the past, we’ve done stories with martians, robots, knights and many of Marvel’s monster characters. So for our Halloween one-shot, we’re doing more of a “classic” zombie apocalypse story about a woman and her son. The kid has grown up in a zombie apocalypse universe and when Halloween rolls around, he wants to go trick or treating. He’s heard about it and read about it, but his mom doesn’t think it’s a very good idea because they’re surrounded by zombies.”

So he asks her, “What’s the purpose of us staying alive during the zombie apocalypse if we never get to have any fun? What’s the point of just surviving?” He then sneaks out on Halloween night and goes Trick or Treating in a Spider-Man costume and events spiral from there. It’s a horrific but sweet little tale.”

On whether we will know the characters or it will remain a mystery.

“Exactly. If I revealed those things, I would give away the game, but I can reveal that this is going to really focus on Marvel’s kid and teen heroes; Avengers Academy, Runaways and even Power Pack. You’ll see more gruesome versions of these teams than we’re used to seeing. It’s sort of what “Lost Boys” did for vampires.

Plus, there’s even a surprise appearance at the end of the story by a Marvel character I’ve always loved, but for various reasons have never been able to include in a story. Their appearance in this is particularly apropos. It’s another horror-themed Marvel character that I’ve never been able to write.”

Geekscape Comics: This Is War Revealed As ‘Punisher: War Zone’ Relaunch

Looks like everyone was wrong about what “This Is War” was going to be all about. Oh wait…not me. Because I totally called it being ‘The Punisher’. Marvel has revealed that they would be relaunching ‘Punisher: War Zone’ with an event titled ‘Lock And Load’. Is The Punisher about to take on the Marvel universe? You’ll have to wait until the panel at Comic-Con in two weeks like the rest of us for all the details.

Earlier today the internet exploded with excitement (trust me…check Twitter) when it hit that Marvel Studios would be announcing ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ at their San Diego Comic-Con panel.

Well now it seems that Variety has confirmed this report and even announced that the release date would be set at May 16, 2014. It’s also being reported that Nicole Perlman (who previously worked on ‘Thor’) has already written two drafts for the film and Marvel is very happy with her work. Marvel has not officially commented yet.

With a new ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ series as well as a new ‘Nova’ series on the way as well as Guardians appearing in a recent episode of ‘Avengers: Earths Mightiest Heroes’ and Nova having a recurring role in ‘Ultimate Spider-Man’…this announcement comes at no shock to me. But definitely has me excited more than some of the previously rumored movies that we would be seeing next. We better see some Star-Lord though or I fear Scott Alminiana may stab someone.

Geekscape Comics: Marvel Declares War On Spider-Man And Black Widow

Marvel continues teasing their next big event “This Is War”. While many fans speculated this could be the Ultron War it continues to look less and less like it. Could they be going against the government? The Punisher?! I’m calling it as The Punisher based on these teasers. Guess we will have to wait and find out at Comic-Con.

Geekscape Comics: Marvel Teaming Up With Komen For The Cure For Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Marvel will be teaming up with Susan G. Komen For The Cure and releasing special variants in order to raise awareness. In addition all Marvel superhero comics in October will feature a special one-page advertorial educating readers about breast cancer. A message that Marvel will also make available on its internet site and via social media.

“Marvel is proud to partner with Susan G. Komen For the Cure to support their unparalleled efforts to raise awareness about the risk of breast cancer to both women and men,” said Dan Buckley, Publisher & President of the Print, Animation & Digital Divisions, Marvel Worldwide, Inc. “We’re in a unique position to educate all our fans and increase awareness of the ways to fight—and reduce– this risk of this disease by utilizing our comics and online presence.”

San Diego Comic-Con 2012: Marvel Studios Officially Announces Panel

Not that we didn’t know it was coming already but now we have times for the Marvel Studios and Walk Disney Studios panels at SDCC 2012. Marvel will most likely be presenting footage from ‘Iron Man 3’ as well as giving updates such as casting on ‘Thor 2’, ‘Captain America 2’ and a sequel to ‘The Avengers’. We should also expect information about their other projects which are currently rumored to be ‘Ant-Man‘, ‘The Black Panther’ and ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy‘.

Marvel Studios: Saturday, July 14th 6:00pm – 7:00pm (Hall H) – Marvel Studios presents Iron Man 3. Join Producer Kevin Feige and special guests as they provide an inside look at the ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Geekscape Comics: NOVA Getting New Series With Ed McGuiness On Art Duty

Post-AvX we know Marvel will be returning to their cosmic titles and it seems we may be getting more than just one. It’s already been all but officially announced that Bendis will be launching a new ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ title. And according to our friends at Bleeding Cool we will also be getting a new ‘Nova’ series to join that.

The book will most likely focus on the new Nova…Sam Alexander (Sorry Richard Rider fans). The series is said to have Ed McGuiness drawing. And while we could see writing there is also possibility that it could be Jeph Loeb.  But neither writers have been actually attached and this is just speculation and we could get an entirely different writer.

RUMOR: Edgar Wright To Shoot ‘Iron Man 3’ Post Credits Scene?

A few days ago I reported that Marvel may be finally moving forward with the ‘Ant-Man’ movie. Now an interesting bit of information which could entirely be a rumor has hit the internet. During The Playlist’s recent podcast they dropped the following information.

“Chinese actor Andy Lau’s (who recently dropped out) role is apparently a “very different version of Radioactive Man in the comics.” And while he’s expected to pop up in future MCU films, he may appear in the post-credits scene. And that will involve him coming face-to-face with a version of Ant-Man.

Edgar Wright will possibly be shooting Iron Man 3’s post-credits scene essentially introducing Ant-Man. This may back of Wright stating he was hoping to shoot some of the movie this year.”

While it is the internet and of course any rumor could be just made upp…The Playlist is a fairly reliable source. Could this confirm rumors that we may get ‘Ant-Man’ in 2014 or 2015?

Marvel Filing Trademarks For ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’

Following the story on ‘Ant-Man’ we have another interesting piece of information regarding another Marvel franchise rumored to be hitting the big screen.

“Marvel Comics have just filed eleven new trademark applications for GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY covering everything from jewelery to beverages to furniture to cosmetics. The applications cover International Classes 3, 14, 16, 20, 24, 29, 30, 32, 35, 41, 42, and also include computer games, fabrics, foods, paper goods, entertainment and internet services, and even retail store services.”

While it could be entirely possible that this is due to the new ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy’ series that Bendis will be doing post-‘AvX’ it would seem more likely that this is due to the planned movie adaptation. With the success of ‘The Avengers’ its highly likely that Marvel/Disney could be pushing forward with more than two projects a year now. With rumors around about ‘Ant-Man’ and ‘The Black Panther’ movie moving forward…why not this? While the movie is probably years away we could possibly even get some news in two weeks at San Diego Comic-Con. But at this point all we have is rumors and speculation to go off of. I am going to say that I better get some damn Rocket Raccoon in this movie!

No details have emerged yet but they will be announcing the details to this event at the Spider-Man panel (weird) at Comic-Con.

Geekscape Comics: After An Eight Year Run Brubaker To Leave ‘Captain America’

Many people believe Brubakers run on ‘Captain America’ to be the titles best. But after nearly eight years he has decided to leave the title. In a recent interview with The Comics Reporter he discussed that as well as if he will remain on ‘Winter Soldier’.

TCR: Now, you told me that you’re wrapping up on Captain America.

Brubaker: Yeah. By the time this interview comes out, I will have written my last issue.

TCR: Congratulations. And that’s… eight years on Cap?

Brubaker: A little less than eight years. I think I started in August or September of 2004 writing my first issue, which came out in November of that year.

TCR: So why now?

Brubaker: Partly, it’s the beginning a shift from work-for-hire to books I own, instead. I hit a point with the work-for-hire stuff where I was starting to feel burned out on it. Like my tank is nearing empty on superhero comics, basically. It’s been a great job, and I think I found ways to bring my voice to it, but I have a lot of other things I want to do as a writer, too, so I’m going to try that for a while instead.

TCR: Now are you keeping Winter Soldier?

Brubaker: Yeah, I am. That’s going to be my only Marvel book soon. I’ll do The Winter Soldier as long as it lasts… or, I’ll do it for as long as I can. [Spurgeon laughs] Because I don’t know if it’ll last, but I’m really proud of that book and the second and third storylines on it are some of my favorite stuff I’ve done for Marvel, ever.

TCR: What do you like about it? What do you think is laudatory? Are you in that place where you can say, “I did that, and I did that very well.”

Brubaker: I think I got to tell a long story. In the early days, I got to create a big soap opera about Steve Rogers and Bucky and Sharon Carter and keep this thrilling adventure ride going. And each arc bled into the next. Then we did the “Death of Cap” thing and I go to really do an 18-part story that still didn’t end with Cap coming back to life yet. [laughs] I got to do some stuff that was really challenging. I got work with some great artists. Steve Epting, he probably drew 35 issues of my run in the early days. I think we developed a really great collaboration. And I always liked that kind of epic storytelling.

“The Death of Captain America” turned out to be the best thing that happened to the book in ways because everything we were able to do after that, because the main character wasn’t in the book, was so much more interesting than when he was in the book. It was a total curveball and you didn’t know what was going to come next. There was a lot of fun to be had in it, and at the same time it was driven by these characters that were characters I had an attachment to from childhood.

Brubaker also confirms that Cullen Bunn (who has been working on ‘Venom’ with Rick Remender) will be working with him on his final arc.

TCR: Don’t they team you up with a writer to transition out of these titles? Like baton pass it to them?

Brubaker: That’s not on purpose for this one. That was a situation with scheduling. Marvel is trying to do this thing now that with some of their better-selling books they want to get out more copies per year than 12. They want to get out 15 or 18 issues. Amazing Spider-Man’s been doing more than one a month for a while now; someone I know does Uncanny X-Men or one of those books, and that comes out 18 times a year.

I couldn’t keep up with that schedule, honestly. I knew I was getting to the end of my run. I wanted to wrap up my run earlier. And [Marvel Senior Vice President Of Publishing] Tom [Brevoort] was like, “Well, you’re going to leave a bunch of plot lines dangling… do you want to go out like that? It’ll seem like you threw up your hands and said ‘I can’t keep up with this schedule.'” I was like, “No, I don’t want to go out that way.” So we brought in Cullen Bunn to write an arc with me. I gave him a list of a bunch of stuff. “Here’s all the dangling plot threads and here’s where we need them all to be by the time I get to my last issue.” And then we figured out a storyline together.

It’s strange. I did all these issues as an uninterrupted run. Then there’s four issues co-written by someone. Then there’s a last issue. [laughs] It’s a little odd.

TCR: Tell me this. You’ve worked this specific period for Marvel. I don’t follow the mainstream books as closely as I would if this were the main focus of the site. It seems to me, though, that this period has been distinguished by a pretty deep writer’s bench for Marvel. There are a lot of you guys that are talented, that are working on those books for Marvel.

Brubaker: I definitely think… they’ve got Jason Aaron, and Jonathan Hickman and Matt Fraction and Rick Remender. Obviously Brian Bendis, who writes so many comics I can’t understand how he possibly keeps up. Kieron Gillen… all of these guys are talented guys. I’m leaving some out — Jeff Parker. There’s a lot of really good writers doing multiple books a month up there.

And it’s such an interesting time in mainstream comics to me because of how in flux it feels. DC had a massive shake-up. Marvel’s ramped up production on everything. It seems a little crazy sometimes. [laughs] I wonder from the outside if it looks as much like as it feels like it on the inside.

TCR: Is there something you see we don’t? We certainly saw the result of those changes at DC.

Brubaker: When I was at DC… sales weren’t necessarily great, but they were fairly stable. There was a certain amount of stability. Both DC and Marvel had stability, it felt like. But two years ago there started to be what seemed like freefall for a lot of books. My personal theory — This happened to coincide [laughs] with the books suddenly costing $3.99 as opposed to $2.99. I think that was when you started to see some books really fall. On the other side, there’s the argument that the best-selling books for the past ten years have been the $3.99 books.

It’s hard to say who’s right or who’s wrong on some of this stuff. But sales on these books were going down below what DC and Marvel would have found acceptable even a few years ago. So that stability just feels like it’s missing all of a sudden.

I mean, imagine how lucky I was to write the same book for eight years. That doesn’t happen a lot anymore. Brian Bendis has been writing Avengers for like nine years now. He’s written more issues of Avengers than any other person. It’s rarer and rarer to have these long runs on books.

Welcome to “Marvel Mania Hollywood” – The Restaurant That Time Forgot!

With the success of The Avengers and the upcoming release of The Amazing Spider-Man, Marvel fandom is at an all time high. But there was a time, only 10 years ago, when this wasn’t the case, when the idea of having our favorite Marvel characters inhabiting our cinema screens and being widely accepted as cool was merely a dream. In that day, before the X-Men and Spider-Man films blew the doors open, there was still a place you could go to see your favorite Marvel characters in real life… and maybe even share a drink with them!

In November of 1998, at Universal Studios, the Marvel Mania Restaurant opened its doors for business. It offered food and drinks based on almost every Marvel hero (and villain!) that you could imagine. Sadly, it was closed less than a year later, in September of 1999. What happened? Why did it go under? What fiends were responsible (I’m guessing the chefs and the prices…)?

We may never know. But here, Geekscape has provided scans of the two original menus for you to look over… so that you can dream of a day, before Marvel was widely accepted as cool, when you could feed your feelings of geekdom alongside its largest symbols.

Aldis Hodge Would Love To Play ‘The Black Panther’

Numerous actors have recently begun expressing their interest to to play the lead role in Marvels ‘The Black Panther’. No doubt due to the recent news that Marvel Studios 2014 sequel to ‘Captain America’ may be followed by a big-screen adaptation of the character.

The most recent of these being Aldis Hodge (‘Die Hard With A Vengeance’, ‘Leverage’, ‘Supernatural’) stating his interest in playing the king of Wakanda.

“Growing up I was a fan of Black Panther and X-Men comic books. I was also a huge Batman fan. There’s recently been a little buzz online about Marvel pushing for Black Panther, and I’ve been in love with the idea for years. I want the fans to know that the one role I really want to play is Black Panther. I grew up loving the Marvel world, and grew up on martial arts. I still train. When Black Panther came around, he was almost like an African American Batman.”

He does have many things going for him as far as the role is concerned. He is in the right age range where he could continue on playing the character for many years, he has the right looks, he already knows the source material and he does have a background with martial arts. However he may not be a big enough name to carry this franchise…but then again no one knew who Chris Hemsworth as prior to ‘Thor’. Thoughts? Opinions? Complete outrage that I could even consider seeing him in the role?

Geekscape Games: ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ Looks Like ‘Arkham City’

‘Arkham Asylum’ and ‘Arkham City’ are games praised by both video game and comic fans alike and ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ definitely seems to have taken some ideas from it. And I am saying this in a completely positive way. I’ve been posting numerous updates about this game over the past few weeks and this new developers diary focuses on the stealth and combat in the game and it looks great. It definitely looks like we will be getting quite a few different styles of gameplay throughout the game.

It also appears a new skin for Spidey has been added to the game and if you know my love of this character you will know that I was pretty psyched seeing this…

Geekscape Games Geek Peek: ‘Marvel Pinball: Avengers Chronicles’

If you are a pinball junkie, chances are you own Pinball FX and Pinball FX2. Zen Studios has done an incredible job with both titles and continuously supports Pinball FX2 with new tables frequently. Since the nerdgasm that was The Avengers movie has been out for a month, Zen Studios decided to team up with Marvel once again to bring us more tables in Marvel Pinball: Avengers Chronicles.

Avengers Chronicles is a 4-pack of tables for the previously released, Marvel Pinball–which is also an add-on for Pinball FX2. New tables consist of The Avengers, Infinity Gauntlet, Fear Itself and World War Hulk. Each table has dialogue from the comics and from the Avengers movie, without the voices from the actors of the movie of course.

From the time I have spent with all 4 tables, Infinity Gauntlet wins as my favorite table. Having the table flip upside down in the middle of play is part devious, part genius. One of the rare times I curse and praised something that happened in a game at the same time. The other tables are no slouch either with the crazy amount of animations, dialogue and minigames  going on. Just be prepared to get a little annoyed when all that animation on screen distracts you or gets in your way when multiball is active.

Marvel Pinball: Avengers Chronicles is available now for 800 MS points on XBLA or $9.99 on PSN. No question if your money should be spent on this. If you have a PS3 or Xbox 360 and love pinball, you should get Marvel Pinball: Avengers Chronicles.

 

‘Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’ NOT Cancelled After All?!

About two weeks ago the news hit the net that they were cancelling ‘Avengers: Earths Mightiest Heroes’ letting down numbers of fans. Well, it looks like some people take trolling and their hatred of the ‘Ultimate Spider-Man’ cartoon way too far. It’s been revealed that this “news” was totally made up.

Bleeding Cool posted an interesting article earlier today.

“Ultimate Spider-Man is a successful show on Disney XD, with decent ratings, audience reaction and the kind of thing a broadcaster likes to hear. It was recently renewed for a second season.

For some, however, it’s not enough. Specifically, it’s not the Spectacular Spider-Man animation show that preceded it, which had a very different style, and an older demographic.

And there is one internet user called Nabil Elmjati who seems to have started a one man covert war against the show and Marvel Animation.

Since Ultimate Spider-Man began running, every Sunday he’s tweeted to Joe Quesada about how so many fans hate the show and wanted Spectacular back.

It was enough for Joe to take the bait. He told Nabil that if the show wasn’t to his liking, then he should just stop watching and that the production team were already working on season 2. Nabil agreed.

Ish.

Because, despite denials, Nabil appears to have created the site ——– which runs stories about Marvel animation and games, but mostly about how awful the Ultimate Spider-Man cartoon is, and how everyone hates it. It is registered to a “Nabil Mjati” in Morocco. So, you know. That’s him.

And then he posted the news that the Avengers Earth’s Mightiest Heroes would be cancelled and replaces with the cartoon Avengers Assemble. He also quoted from a press release, purported to be “print only”, saying “The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes won’t be renewed for the 3rd Season. Marvel Animation will present their newly developed series Marvel’s Avengers Assemble in 2013.”

Which was picked up verbatim by sites all across the internet, some like Comic Book Movie, Oh No They Didn’t, CBR, Critiques For Geeks, giving credit to Marvel TV News, others like iFanboy, ScreenRant, Geek Tyrant, Super Hero Hype, Comic Vine

Only problem was that the quote was made up. There was no official press release. It was a lie that few chose to question.

There is certainly the rumour that Earth’s Mightiest Heroes has been cancelled. It may well be replaced by the new Avengers Assemble. But no official word. Marvel TV News made up an official quote and all the websites followed suit without checking.

It gets better. Nabil also directed people on Twitter to Jeph Loeb’s Facebook page, where Loeb was being bombarded by negative comments about Ultimate Spider-Man. So much so that Jeph had to take his Facebook page down.

Except Jeph doesn’t have a Facebook page, there’s just an Author page which doesn’t take comments. It looks like Nabil may have created that too, and recruited people to write such comments. Facebook were informed of the situation and took it down.”

Yay. Our name wasn’t on the list of sites that reported this. But really…that’s a little over the top for a hatred of a cartoon.

On the bright side…Earths Mightiest Heroes fans rejoice! They may return for a third season after all!

Geekscape Comics: Shawn Maddens “Five Titles You Should Be Reading”

So, not too long ago Scott Alminiana did a list of books you should be reading. With it being such a slow news day I thought i’d take it upon myself to do my own list of five titles I think you should be reading.

UNCANNY X-FORCE

This book is a no-brainer. With a team consisting of Deadpool, Psylocke, Wolverine, Fantomex and Archangel (currently replaced by AoA Nightcrawler) and the creative team of Rick Remender and Jerome Opena this is one of the best X-books out there right now.

‘The Dark Angel Saga’ was critically acclaimed and even won IGN’s Best Story Arc Of 2011.

Currently we see the team going head to head with The Omega Clan and the new Brotherhood Of Evil Mutants in ‘The Final Execution’. While everyone was praising this weeks Batman…i’m sorry but this weeks Uncanny X-Force excelled. The art and writing were flawless and back on track for this book after the somewhat weak last story arc. This book has improved over time unlike a number of titles.

I think one of the most interesting aspects of this book is the conflicting personalities amongst the team. The particular highlights of characters in this book are Fantomex (especially his relationship with Psylocke) and Deadpool who can seem to make light of any situation and make you crack a smile in the darkest of books even. I’m not ranking these five but this title is definitely at the top of my list.

SUPER CROOKS

It’s Millar. It’s Yu. It’s like ‘Oceans Eleven’ with a bunch of supervillains if Steven Soderbergh made that movie a bloody violent mess. At first I was quite skeptical of this book but chose to pick it up just to check out Lenil Yus artwork. But man…am I glad I started reading this. This book is fun while violent and *&^%$’ed up at the same time.

Now…i’ll say this right off the bat. If you do NOT like Mark Millar…this book may not be for you. But if you like, love or just kinda-sorta like his work here and there. Check this title out. For $2.99 it’s well worth it.

RED HOOD AND THE OUTLAWS

DC somehow managed to take a character that no one liked and turned him into one of the coolest characters in their universe. If you haven’t been reading comics for awhile…Red Hood equals Jason Todd. Remember Jason Todd? The Robin that fans voted to die at the hands of The Joker with a crowbar? Yeah. Its him. Throw in the sexually promiscuous Starfire, ex-addict Roy Harper aka Arsenal and toss in some mystic elements with the beautiful artwork of Kenneth Rocafort and writing by Scott Lobdell and you have one great DC title.

There really is nothing I dislike about this title. I’m not the biggest DC fan but I make sure and read this book the day it’s released. Even though i’m not sure if Kenneth Rocafort and Scott Lobdell will be staying on after they take over Superman but i’m really hoping so because i’ve loved this book so far and gotten quite a few people hooked.

ULTIMATE COMICS: X-MEN

“What? An Ultimate title?! Why would I read that?” says die-hard Marvel fan. And i’m going to tell you why. It is good. No, it’s not just good. It is fantastic. “But there is no Wolverine or Cyclops in this book!” Good point. Too bad the writers of this book make you not even care that the house hold X-names are not present. I actually came into this title late out of curiosity around issue six. Lets just say the comic shop saw me return the next day to pick up issues one through five.

I think what I like most about this book is its a 180 of the current status of mutants in the Marvel U. In the Ultimate U they’re on the run. They’re labeled as terrorists. They’re put into containment camps. And in recent issues they’ve been pushed and now they’re pushing back. All of the Ultimate books are about engage in something big with ‘Divided We Fall’ which is starting soon and a big part of that can be seen in Ultimate Comics: X-Men. The team of writer and Nick Spencer and artist Paco Medina  really delivered with this title. With the most recent issue Brian Wood has taken over writing duties and not dropped the ball one bit. This book is a “top of the stack” title for sure.

X-Factor

Yup…it’s another X-book! Holy $#!+ Peter David is writing a GREAT book here. You have Neil Edwards pencilling. And you have a book with Havok, Polaris, Siryn, Longshot, Shatterstar, Madrox, M, Strong Guy, Rictor and Rahne. Those should be selling points alone.

I’m not going to get too deep into why you should be reading this book but if you haven’t reaqd this title in awhile…come back. If you’ve never read this title…check it out. This is another one i’ve told people to check out and it has ended up on their pull lists.
