We’ve heard plenty of stories about the liberties being taken with Michael Bay (Transformers) & Jonathon Liebesman’s (Battle: Los Angeles) upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film. While we don’t know if all of these stories are true or not, being that Bay has stated that the script that leaked is not the one being used for the film, what we do know now is that the film will be principal photography this April in New York.

With this now being revealed, expect some casting news regarding the film very soon. Also, could this confirm that the film will actually be called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and not just Ninja Turtles like it was rumored to be called? More details regarding the film should definitely be expected over the next few months.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or Ninja Turtles will hit theaters on May 16th, 2014.

The “We the People” program started by the Obama Administration, is an online program that allows United States citizens to create petitions that are intended to influence policy. The only catch is that the petition needs to gain  25,000 signatures. Well, a petition for the United States government to build a Death Star reached 34,000 signatures. Yes, you read that right.

So, what did the United States government have to say about this? Well, you can read an official response from Paul Shawcross, Chief of the Science and Space Branch at the White House Office of Management and Budget to the wacky notion of starting construction on a Death Star by 2016 below.

The Administration shares your desire for job creation and a strong national defense, but a Death Star isn’t on the horizon. Here are a few reasons: The construction of the Death Star has been estimated to cost more than $850,000,000,000,000,000. We’re working hard to reduce the deficit, not expand it. The Administration does not support blowing up planets. Why would we spend countless taxpayer dollars on a Death Star with a fundamental flaw that can be exploited by a one-man starship?

However, look carefully (here’s how) and you’ll notice something already floating in the sky — that’s no Moon, it’s a Space Station! Yes, we already have a giant, football field-sized International Space Station in orbit around the Earth that’s helping us learn how humans can live and thrive in space for long durations. The Space Station has six astronauts — American, Russian, and Canadian — living in it right now, conducting research, learning how to live and work in space over long periods of time, routinely welcoming visiting spacecraft and repairing onboard garbage mashers, etc.

We’ve also got two robot science labs — one wielding a laser — roving around Mars, looking at whether life ever existed on the Red Planet. Keep in mind, space is no longer just government-only. Private American companies, through NASA’s Commercial Crew and Cargo Program Office (C3PO), are ferrying cargo — and soon, crew — to space for NASA, and are pursuing human missions to the Moon this decade. Even though the United States doesn’t have anything that can do the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs, we’ve got two spacecraft leaving the Solar System and we’re building a probe that will fly to the exterior layers of the Sun. We are discovering hundreds of new planets in other star systems and building a much more powerful successor to the Hubble Space Telescope that will see back to the early days of the universe. We don’t have a Death Star, but we do have floating robot assistants on the Space Station, a President who knows his way around a light saber and advanced (marshmallow) cannon, and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, which is supporting research on building Luke’s arm, floating droids, and quadruped walkers. We are living in the future! Enjoy it. Or better yet, help build it by pursuing a career in a science, technology, engineering or math-related field.

The President has held the first-ever White House science fairs and Astronomy Night on the South Lawn because he knows these domains are critical to our country’s future, and to ensuring the United States continues leading the world in doing big things. If you do pursue a career in a science, technology, engineering or math-related field, the Force will be with us! Remember, the Death Star’s power to destroy a planet, or even a whole star system, is insignificant next to the power of the Force.

So, should we maybe try and see if we can start a petition to begin The Avengers Initiative next? That one might cost a bit less.

Pretty much as soon as word broke that Disney had acquired Lucasfilm and that we’d see Star Wars: Episode VII coming to theaters in 2015, fans have been talking about a desire to see Joss Whedon helm the next chapter. That was until they remembered that Whedon would be directing the sequel to a little movie called The Avengers. Well, don’t worry. You weren’t the only one who forgot about it. At first Whedon thought “Maybe I should see if I can get the job”, before remembering he already was a little tied up.

“I’m as angry as you should be. When I heard that I was like, ‘I wonder… no, I really can’t do that. Oh, I already have a job.’ I wouldn’t clear the Avengers. I’m having so much fun with that sequel right now, just with the script, that I couldn’t imagine not doing it.”

Whedon is currently also working on Marvel and ABC’s S.H.I.E.L.D. television series at the moment and told CNN that the show is reminding him how “taxing television can be”.

“I’d forgotten how much work TV was so I’m cranky at everybody all the time. But it’s really fun. We have a beautiful ensemble and we’re having so much fun coming up with the stories. It really is like working at Marvel Comics, which was a dream of mine as a kid because this little book ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’ that not that many people read …[The show’s] not as big as the movies [and] we’re telling smaller stories but we get to do it more often. “

Were you worried that A Good Day To Die Hard, the fifth film in the Die Hard series, was going to be rated PG-13 like its predecessor Live Free Or Die Hard? Well, worry no longer. It’s been revealed that John McClane’s next outing on the big screen is definitely going to be rated R.

smiling-bruce

This means that John and his son Jack, played by Jai Courtney, are going to curse as much as they want, shed as much blood as they want, and just kick as much ass as they want when the film comes to theaters next month.  This is definitely good news and means this film may return the feeling of the originals that we all love. Can we all just say f*** yeah?

Iconoclastic, take-no-prisoners cop John McClane, for the first time, finds himself on foreign soil after traveling to Moscow to help his wayward son Jack–unaware that Jack is really a highly-trained CIA operative out to stop a nuclear weapons heist. With the Russian underworld in pursuit, and battling a countdown to war, the two McClanes discover that their opposing methods make them unstoppable heroes.

A Good Day To Die Hard is going to **** up theaters on February 14th.

Jeff Nathanson, the scribe behind Catch Me If You Can and The Terminal, has signed on to pen the script for the fifth film in the Pirates Of The Caribean franchise. There’s currently no other details regarding the release date, the plot or cast of the project. Johnny Depp is expected to return for this next installment but has yet to sign on. However, the actor has stated in the past that as long as the material is good, he would be happy to return. Oh, who is he kidding? Even if it isn’t, he’ll be back.

When word broke that Clark Gregg would be returning as Agent Coulson for Marvel & ABC’s S.H.I.E.L.D., many wondered if perhaps the series would be a prequel to Marvel Studios the Avengers. There’s also been plenty of theories regarding how the character would re-appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Now, while speaking with IGN, ABC President Paul Lee was asked how Marvel’s S.H.I.E.L.D. would tie in with the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and he has revealed that the pilot will be taking place after the battle of New York in The Avengers. So, life model decoys?

“There is no question that it is part of the Marvel Universe. In fact, the story takes place after the battle for New York.”

He also pointed out that while this is a part of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe, this series is very much a standalone series at the same time.

“This is S.H.I.E.L.D. They’re following their own particular stories. There are characters in it, Coulson, who clearly comes from Avengers. So it’s part of the world, but we’re going to be very, very careful that we don’t tread on the toes of the features and build a whole new world. And that’s what Joss Whedon does better than anybody else. He’s built a world for us.”

When asked about introducing more Marvel characters if the series gets picked up (even though we all know it’s going to), Lee sounded pretty optimistic about the possibility.

“I think if we’re lucky enough to have a great series, we’re obviously having fun with that. At this point though, we have a number of characters at the heart of the script who are real characters, who are the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and the first task is to make those guys great and relatable and everything that a great show needs. Beyond that, fingers crossed!”

Marvel’s S.H.I.E.L.D. pilot begins filming next week and will most likely air on ABC during the fall.

The last time that there was word about a live-action Star Wars television series it was said that there was plenty of material for the series, but the issue was the cost. It now appears that ABC (a Disney subsidiary) is taking another look, with the network’s president Paul Lee trying to work out the best route to bring a Star Wars series to television.

“We’re going to look at [the live-action series], we’re going to look at all of them, and see what’s right”.

Apparently the live-action series centers on the story of rival families who are struggling over the control of the seedy underside of the Star Wars universe. The series will take place withing the subterranean level and air shafts of the metropolis planet Coruscant. Quite similar to the story of the upcoming Star Wars videogame 1313.

We may see a bounty hunter as the main character of the series set in a time period that would allow the potential appearances from classic characters from the Star Wars universe. However, don’t get your hopes up yet because the new live-action films may see the series continue to sit on the backburner for awhile longer. Lee makes no guarantees of the series going forward on ABC and says it would be tricky to juggle a television show and a feature film franchise set within the same universe.

“It’s going to be very much up to the Lucasfilm brands how they want to play it. We got to a point here with Marvel, a very special point, where we’re in the Marvel universe, and very relevantly so, but we’re not doing The Avengers. But S.H.I.E.L.D. is part of The Avengers. So maybe something oblique is the way to [approach the Star Wars universe] rather than going straight head-on at it.”

Could they be waiting to see how Marvel’s S.H.I.E.L.D. series works before moving forward?

Well, this was definitely unexpected. It appears that New Line Cinema is moving forward with an adaptation of the the cult classic Y: The Last Man, and has out Dan Trachtenberg in the directors chair for the film. Trachtenberg is a relative unknown, most known for his commercial work, put himself on the map after he created a short film Portal: No Escape, based on the popular, Portal, video game. The short was well received and went on to receive six million hits in the first two months.

Y: The Last Man is the dystopian science fiction comic book series by Brian K. Vaughan and Pia Guerra published by Vertigo beginning in 2002. It focuses on only man to survive the apparent simultaneous death of every male mammal on Earth. The 60 issue series has gone on to win five Eisner Awards.

An adaptation of the series has been in production since 2007. Back in March of 2012 writers Matthew Federman and Stephen Scaia entered final negotiations to write New Line’s adaptation of the series. The film is being produced by Benderspink and David Goyer, with Sam Brown and David Neustadter overseeing for New Line.

There’s been quite a bit of news regarding Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures Godzilla this week. Earlier today Warner Bros. promotional arm held a webinar on their upcoming slate, and included amongst that was a few plot details regarding Gareth Edwards new and “realistic” take on the legendary monster.

-The film will feature more than one monster, confirming that two new monsters will also be wreaking havoc – this in addition to the big green guy.

-Warner Bros. made it clear that their interpretation of the material “follows the story of a solider” and is “way different” than the Toho Godzilla films.

Well, it looks like we’re not going to be just seeing Godzilla tear through a city but perhaps take on a few of his classic monster enemies. Or perhaps he’s going to be taking on some brand new ones? There’s no word as far as that goes at the moment.

So, oddly the teaser art is actually done by Art Adams. But come April Mike Hawthorne (Fear Agent, Hysteria) will be taking over art duties on Deadpool. Does this mean that Tony Moore is leaving the title or that Hawthorne is just doing a story arc? Guess we’re going to have to wait and find out.

Quite a bit of casting news coming down regarding Robert Rodgriguez and Frank Miller’s Sin City: A Dame To Kill For. Yesterday when word broke that Joseph Gordon-Levitt had signed on for the film it was also revealed that Josh Brolin (MIB3, Oldboy) was being looked at for one of the film’s roles as well. Well, Brolin has now officially been cast as Dwight, who was played by Clive Owen in the first film, in the upcoming sequel. Check out the full press release below.

Today Dimension Films announced another big name that has been added to the SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR cast roster, further ramping up the ensemble – Academy Award® nominee Josh Brolin (GANGSTER SQUAD, MILK). Brolin will star as “Dwight” in the follow up to FRANK MlLLER’S SIN CITY for co-directors Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller. The part of the “Dame” has yet to be cast.

Dwight is one of the favorite characters from Miller’s books and the 2005 film. In SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR, Dwight is hunted down by the only woman he ever loved, Ava Lord, and then watches his life go straight to hell. Chronologically, this story takes place prior to “The Big Fat Kill” (featured in the film FRANK MILLER’S SIN CITY) and explains how Dwight came to have a dramatically different face.

“Dwight is a constant character throughout the Sin City world and “A Dame To Kill For” is a defining episode in his life. We’re looking forward to Josh’s take on Dwight,” said Rodriguez and Miller.

Brolin will next be seen alongside Sean Penn in the Warner Bros. 1940’s police drama Gangster Squad set for release January 11, 2013. Brolin recently completed production on the Jason Reitman-directed film Labor Day opposite Kate Winslet, in addition to Spike Lee’s Oldboy, a remake of the popular Korean film. Brolin last appeared as young “Agent K” in Men in Black 3, directed by Barry Sonnenfeld and co-starring Will Smith and Emma Thompson. In 2008, Brolin was nominated for an Academy Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award and received awards from the New York Film Critics Circle and the National Board of Review for his portrayal of ‘Dan White’ in Gus Van Sant’s acclaimed film Milk. Prior to that, Brolin earned a Screen Actors Guild Award as part of an ensemble for his work in Joel and Ethan Coen’s No Country for Old Men, which also won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.

SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR weaves together two of Miller’s classic stories with new tales in which the town’s most hard boiled citizens cross paths with some of its more repulsive inhabitants.

The star studded ensemble includes already announced original cast members Academy Award® nominee Mickey Rourke as “Marv,” Jessica Alba as “Nancy,” Rosario Dawson as “Gail” and Jaime King as “Goldie/Wendy” with new cast members Joseph Gordon-Levitt as “Johnny,” Dennis Haysbert as “Manute” and Jamie Chung as “Miho.” Production is underway at Rodriguez’s Troublemaker Studios in Austin, Texas.

Sin City: A Dame To Kill For is scheduled theaters October 4th.

A short while ago it was rumored that young Irish actor Jack Reynor (What Richard Did) had been offered a lead role in the upcoming fourth Transformers film to star alongside Mark Wahlberg. Michael Bay has now taken to his official website and confirmed that Reynor has been cast in the film, calling him “the real deal”. Bay also confirms that the film, which will be quite different than the last few, will the be the first of a brand new trilogy.

I just hired a great new actor for Transformers 4 to star against Mark Wahlberg. Jack Reynor, he is an Irish kid that came to America with 30 bucks in his pocket. Pretty ballsy. Seriously, who does that? Anyway I spotted him in a great little Irish movie WHAT RICHARD DID. This kid is the real deal.

Transformers 4 is not a reboot. That word has been floating around on the net.

This movie takes place exactly 4 years after the war in Chicago. The story makes a very natural transition, and reason as to why we have a whole new cast. This Transformers will feel very different then the last three. We are embarking on a new trilogy.

Filming is beginning this May and Transformers 4 is set to hit theaters June 27th, 2014.

Deadline has just broken news that Joseph Gordon-Levitt has signed on to star in Frank Miller and Robert Rodrigueze’s Sin City: A Dame To Kill For. Levitt will play the role of ‘Johnny’, a part that was actually at one point offered to Johnny Depp.

Levitt will be joining the returning cast from the first film as well as newcomers which may include Josh Brolin (Gangster Squad). Brolin is among a list of actors that the studio is courting for “tough guy” roles in the sequel.

The site also goes on to reveal that Levitt has ended talks with Marvel Studios regarding the role of Peter Quill aka Star-Lord in Guardians Of The Galaxy and that the studio will now be looking at other candidates. So, scratch one name off the not-so-short list of candidates for the role.

New York, NY January 7, 2013 – Dimension Films announced today that Joseph Gordon-Levitt (LOOPER, THE DARK KNIGHT RISES) is joining the all-star cast as one of the lead characters in the highly anticipated SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR. The film is the follow up to co-directors Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller’s 2005 visually groundbreaking film, FRANK MILLER’S SIN CITY. Other major casting announcements will continue to follow.

Gordon-Levitt will play “Johnny,” a cocky gambler who disguises a darker mission to destroy his most foul enemy at his best game.

“Johnny is a new character in the Sin City world and we are excited for what Joseph will bring to the role,” said Rodriguez and Miller.

Gordon-Levitt most recently wrote, directed and stars in DON JON’S ADDICTION which will premiere this month at Sundance and also stars Scarlett Johansson and Julianne Moore.

SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR weaves together two of Miller’s classic stories with new tales in which the town’s most hard boiled citizens cross paths with some of its more repulsive inhabitants.

The ensemble includes already announced original cast members Academy Award® nominee Mickey Rourke as “Marv,” Jessica Alba as “Nancy,” Rosario Dawson as “Gail,” and Jaime King as “Goldie/Wendy” with new cast members Dennis Haysbert as “Manute,” and Jamie Chung as “Miho”. Production is underway at Rodriguez’s Troublemaker Studios in Austin, Texas.

The original SIN CITY broke new ground with its iconic stylish look. SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR will not only bring fans back to the world that Miller and Rodriguez created, but also add a new dimension by bringing their unique visual style to life in 3D.

SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR was developed by Frank Miller based upon his graphic novel, with a screenplay by Miller and Academy Award® winner William Monahan (The Departed). The film will be released by Dimension Films in the US and Canada on October 4, 2013 and is produced by Robert Rodriguez’s Quick Draw Productions, Aldamisa, AR Films, Miramax and Solipsist.

A new teaser shows that coming this April The Superior Spider-Man is…fired? Are The Avengers giving him the pink slip? Is Slott using this to return Spider-Man to being more of a loner? Does this mean he can collect unemployment? Guess we’ll find out in April.

There’s been quite a bit of news regarding Godzilla today. We learned of Frank Darabont was being brought on board to help with the script as well as a short list of actors up for the male lead. It appears there has been some misconception regarding Frank Darabont’s involvement with the Garth Edward’s directed film. The Godzilla 3D Facebook page has revealed that Darabont is NOT re-writing the script but rather finalizing it.

There’s a bit of misconception and worry surrounding the news of new writer Frank Darabont writing Godzilla. He is NOT RE-WRITING the script, he is finalizing it. This is how the process for the film went…

– David Callaham submitted the first draft
– David Goyer rewrote the first draft & fleshed the story out better
– Max Borenstein completed Goyer’s rewrite
– Drew Pearce finalized the characters
– Frank Darabont is finalizing the full script.

The story has not changed at all. Just some revisions.

Current word is that the film will begin production on March 14th and filming will take place in Vancouver and Hawaii. So, despite some legal troubles with producers it appears that everything is on track for the next Godzilla film. From what has been shown (if you were lucky enough to be in Hall H at Comic-Con) and talked about regarding this film, it sounds like they are taking it very serious and Godzilla fans should be in for a real treat.

Just a short while ago, at the International CES, an alternate trailer featuring some new footage was shown for Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming sci-fi film Pacific Rim. Check it out below. It’s not a lot of new footage, but some is better than none right?

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

Pacific Rim hits theaters July 12th.

It’s been revealed that a number of the original cast from the X-Men trilogy will be returning for the upcoming X-Men: Days Of Future Past, however one cast member isn’t too sure about her return. It’s been rumored for awhile now that Famke Janssen (who played Jean Grey in the first three films) would have a cameo appearance in The Wolverine as well as return for the next X-film. While doing press for Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters actress was asked about her return to which she replied:

“I’m sitting by the phone waiting, call me up Bryan! I think their challenge is that I died as Jean Grey and I died as the Phoenix, so what else can they do. If they bring a younger version back, they’ll have to get a younger actress, so what is there left to do?”

Well, it looks like Janssen joins the list of cast members unsure if they’re going to be returning for the next X-film. With filming set to begin in a few months, expect to learn the full cast for the film quite soon. Seriously though, our fingers are crossed for James Marsden and Lucas Till both coming back.

Sony has tapped Seth Lochhead, who co-wrote the film Hanna, to work on their upcoming adaptation of the critically acclaimed video game Shadow Of The Colossus. Josh Trank (Chronicle) is currently attached to direct the film and will oversee the writing of the script. The original draft of the script was written by Justin Marks back in 2009.

The story of Shadow Of The Colossus deals with a young man who thinks his lover has died, and desperate to bring her back, he makes a deal with a demon resurrect her – but only if he slays 16 giant creatures known as Colossi first. There is currently no casting or release date for the film.

Not long ago it was rumored that Guillermo del Toro was going to be working on a team-up film featuring a number of the characters from DC Comics darker side. From the description and the team rumored to appear the film sounded like it would be a loose interpretation of the New 52’s Justice League Dark.

Del Toro has now finally confirmed that he is indeed working on the project, which will be called Dark Universe,  and is currently writing an outline for the film. The director also goes on to reveal that he will be working with another writer who is “the perfect guy for the job”. Del Toro wouldn’t reveal just who the writer is but did state they really want to do this and are awaiting the green-light from Warner Bros.

So, what about the characters who will be appearing in the film? Well, Del Toro confirms that if the film gets the green-light we will at least (fingers crossed on Buddy Baker aka Animal Man) see Swamp Thing, John Constantine (still no word if this will be the same character from the previous film), Deadman, Etrigan, The Spectre, Zatanna and Zatara in the film.

It has been revealed that there are several well-known actors being sought for a lead role in the upcoming Godzilla remake. The list includes Henry Cavill (Man of Steel), Scoot McNairy (Argo) and Caleb Landry Jones (X-Men: First Class).

At one point Joseph Gordon-Levitt was also included on the list, but word is that the offer is no longer on the table. Levitt and Cavill are apparently the studios choices, while McNairy and Caleb are “creative choices” for the role. There are possibly more on the list, but none revealed at the moment. No offers have been made currently, but as soon as the script is finished you can definitely expect to hear more about this.

It’s the time to recap the week’s news and events with The Week In Comics! There wasn’t a lot of news this week in regards to comics but there was some pretty big news to report.

Jame Tynion IV Taking Over Writing Duties On Red Hood & The Outlaws

Red Hood And The Outlaws has been one of the New 52’s best titles so far and it looks like it’s getting even better. James Tynion IV (Talon) will be taking over writing duties after Lobdell finishes up his final story arc. [via Bleeding Cool]

Eddie Brock To Become The New “Toxin”

It’s been revealed that Eddie Brock will be returning to the Marvel Universe. But Brock won’t be coming back as Venom nor will he return as Anti-Venom. No, Brock will be returning as a new incarnation of Toxin, and will definitely be coming head to head with The Superior Spider-Man in the future. Cullen Bunn on Eddie Brock as the new Toxin: [via Newsarama]

You’ll start getting glimpses of him before issue #31, but in #31, Toxin returns. There are a lot of people who say, “Eddie Brock should be the only Venom. He’s the only person worthy of being Venom.” My goal, as lofty as it may be, is, I really want people to forget about Eddie as Venom. What [artist] Declan [Shalvey] and I are trying to do is, once we tell this story, I want people to associate Eddie Brock with Toxin.

It’s a lofty goal, because he has such a big history with Venom, but a lot of people really liked when he was Anti-Venom. We want to make Toxin a viable, interesting, dynamic character on his own — the Eddie/Toxin combo, or “Broxin” as I’ve seen him referred. [Laughs.] Our goal is to really make people love and hate and fear Toxin, and Eddie Brock.

When Eddie and Toxin were bonded in “Savage Six,” he was almost like this mindless killing machine. That is not the Toxin you are going to see.
