Briefly: While I haven’t yet had an opportunity to start the series myself, I’ve been hearing nothing but good things about USA’s recently launched, Sawyer Josh Holloway-starring sci-fi series Colony.

After following the trailers up to its launch, and the incredible promotion at last year’s San Diego Comic-Con, I’m excited to (eventually) check the series out, and even more excited that it won’t be a one-season affair.

Yep, USA has just announced that Colony has been renewed for a second season.

Only three episodes of the series have aired thus far, and that’s apparently enough, as Chris McCumber, President of USA Network notes that “Carlton and Ryan have successfully delivered a story that tests the strengths and weaknesses of a society in duress, and the bonds of a family divided. Colony’s performance across all platforms has been impressive, and we can’t wait to see where the story takes us.”

Have you been watching the series so far? What have you thought of the first three episodes? What do you want to see next? Be sure to sound out in the comments below!

https://youtu.be/VQh0d469N64

My first knowledge of USA’s Colony came during San Diego Comic-Con, when I saw branded SUVs and soldiers driving for Uber. I tried to get a ride but they wouldn’t stop. I spent the next twenty minutes walking lost in the Gaslamp District.

But I didn’t have a grudge come last week’s New York Comic-Con, when I sat down with the executive producers and star USA’s newest sci-fi drama set in a dystopian future. Starring Josh Holloway and Sarah Wayne Callies (from The Walking Dead). But don’t tell them that it’s sci-fi. They’re adamant about that.

I think it’s not that much about science fiction,” said series creator Ryan Condal to me in the NYCC press room. “They’ve installed a proxy government of humans and it’s really about the rules of society that have been in us, about a family’s struggle to survive in this mysterious and brand new world. It’s not like we’re fighting aliens, that’s not what the show is about. It’s really about colonization. For us, almost every country in the world has either been a colony or a colonizer and that’s what our show is really exploring.

Dim futures are en vogue now, from The Hunger Games to The Walking Dead. When asked how Colony could resonate in this era, the producers remained hopeful.

Our audience is so well educated now with science fiction and genre story-telling,” Condal acknowledges, “but I think it is the themes of the show that we’re exploring: colonization, occupation, living under a policed state or a militarized government… Seeing similar stories told where the worlds are entirely different than in most other stories, I think is really going to hook in the fans. It makes the show unique.

Star Josh Holloway thinks it’s more of a “character study.”

“It’s not the big flashy war that the normal genre begin with,” he says. “What’s happening is the after effects of [those] decisions we have to make, the moral compromises to survive. Ultimately it’s one of the oldest stories in human history. It’s about occupation, it’s about colonization. We’ve either been occupied or occupied somebody else throughout human history. So these themes, I think is what the audience is going to grasp on to because it’s an old human story.”

Josh Holloway stars as Will Bowman, an ex-FBI agent that was once a “man hunter” and now becomes the hunted throughout Colony‘s first season. “It’s not a superhero show,” he explains, “It’s not physical in that way but he gets physical and he’s in desperate situations… it’s more about putting puzzles together. That’s his super power, if you will.”

Ruggedly handsome, I doubted that Holloway had any difficulty adapting to the role. I was right. For the Georgia native, it was a cinch.  “I love physical action. I grew up with three brothers in the country so for me, that’s like putting on an old pair of jeans.” He also brought up doing martial arts, so I had to ask him what he trains in, naturally.

Jiu-jitsu right now. Don’t ask me why I started jiu-jitsu at 46. Wow. They just call me Swiffer, they just clean the mat with me. But I’m learning. I’m getting meaner. I also do taekwondo, and I dirt bike and snowboard.”

I doubt we’ll see Point Blank stunts in Colony, but there will sure be a hell of a lot of brawling. “The action scenes and fight scenes are different. They’ve evolved so, jiu-jitzu I just got into. I spend all my time on the ground. I thought, ‘Let’s just get better at ground work!'”

Colony premieres January 2016 on USA.

If you’ve ever attended San Diego Comic Con, or ANY kind of convention for that matter, then you’ll know how difficult it can be to get around. From the massive crowds, to the tedious crosswalks (Twilight fans don’t stop for red lights) it can get tiring. Well USA and Uber have teamed up to bring attendees of SDCC 2015 some pretty sweet rides featuring the new show, The Colony.

The COLONY “Transportation Domination” will provide Comic-Con attendees with complimentary rides using a fleet of hundreds of COLONY branded units including military vehicles and SUVs, bicycles from 23 DecoBike stations and pedicabs, beginning Thursday, July 9 and continuing through Saturday, July 11 from 10:00 AM –10:00 PM PT daily.  The massive squadron of custom-designed COLONY branded military vehicles and SUVs will be available for request via the Uber app by selecting the COLONY option.   Additionally, one lucky participant will win a ride with COLONY creators Carlton Cuse (“Lost,” “Bates Motel”) and Ryan Condal (“Hercules”).  Fans can enter by following @ColonyUSA on Twitter and using the hashtags #ColonySDCC and#UberColonySweeps.

On top of that, there will be a team of the shows Transit Authority enforcers roaming the Gaslamp District. If you’re around and see any of these red-hatted gentlemen snag a selfie with them and share it with the hashtag #RedhatRewards. You’ll get your hands on some free food from around the convention area. And free food is the next best thing, right after free transportation.

Briefly: The USA Network has just renewed Suits for a fifth season.

The season will consist of the usual 16 episodes (which isn’t nearly enough in my biased opinion). The fourth season will air its midseason finale on August 20th, at which point I’ll fall into a slight depression until it returns later this year.

This is fantastic news. Suits is one of the best dramas on television, and there really isn’t a series that I look forward to more each week. It seems as though almost everyone I speak to has never heard of the show, so if you haven’t I implore you to check it out.

If you’ve missed out on the series so far, you can catch up via Amazon Instant Video in the US, or Netflix in Canada.

SUITS centers on a fast-paced Manhattan corporate law firm led by legendary lawyer Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht, “Love and Other Drugs”).  This season saw a major shift at The Firm that left Harvey at odds with his brilliant, but not-technically-legal associate Mike Ross (SAG Award nominee Patrick J. Adams, “Rosemary’s Baby”) who left to head to Wall Street as an investment banker.  As the series builds to its summer finale, Mike has returned to Pearson Specter to resume his place beside Harvey, but Louis’ (Rick Hoffman, “Samantha Who”) secret threatens to unravel The Firm.  The series also stars Gina Torres (“Firefly”), Sarah Rafferty (“Brothers & Sisters”) and Meghan Markle (“Fringe”).

Briefly: The USA Network has just renewed Suits for a fourth season.

The season will consist of the usual 16 episodes, while series creator and showrunner Aaron Korsh has signed an overall deal with Universal Cable Productions to continue his work on Suits and to develop new scripted series.

This is fantastic news. Suits is one of the best dramas on television, and there really isn’t a series that I look forward to more each week. It seems as though almost everyone I speak to has never heard of the show, so if you haven’t I implore you to check it out.

Take a look at the full press release below, and let us know just how much you’re enjoying the show! Suits will return sometime in 2014!

USA Network announced today a 16-episode fourth season renewal of the critically-acclaimed original drama SUITS. Additionally, creator and showrunner Aaron Korsh has signed an overall deal with Universal Cable Productions to continue his work on SUITS and to develop new scripted series.

“As a leading cable drama, SUITS is at the top of its game and continues to grow in the key demographics, drawing a passionate, young and loyal audience,” said Chris McCumber, President of USA Network. “Aaron Korsh consistently pushes the boundaries of storytelling and the series promises to deliver a provocative fourth season.”

“From the beginning, we’ve seen SUITS as a long term player for the studio and we look forward to extending our relationship with Aaron. Harvey, Mike and the rest of the SUITS crew are characters that have created a dedicated and enthusiastic audience,” said Jeff Wachtel, President and Chief Content Officer, NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment and head of UCP.

In third quarter, SUITS was among the top 5 in P18-49 and the top 10 in P25-54 in all of TV’s primetime scripted series. The drama was the #1 scripted series on television, broadcast or cable, Tuesday nights among P18-49. The series centers on a fast-paced Manhattan corporate law firm led by legendary lawyer Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht) and his brilliant, but not-technically-legal associate Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams). From Universal Cable Productions, SUITS also stars Rick Hoffman (“Samantha Who”), Gina Torres (“Firefly”), Sarah Rafferty (“Brothers & Sisters”) and Meghan Markle (“CSI Miami”).

Season three of SUITS continues in first quarter 2014 following the Olympics, with the capitivating final six episodes, featuring guest star appearances by the most decorated Olympian of all-time, Michael Phelps (who happens to be a SUITS fan) and Gabriel Macht’s famous father, Stephen Macht (“The Monster Squad,” “General Hospital”). Picking up in the wake of an emotional and shattering murder trial, Harvey (G. Macht) and Jessica (Torres) address the firm’s future, while Louis (Hoffman) threatens to expose the truth about Mike (Adams).

The entire series to-date will be available for binge viewing via video-on-demand and TVEverywhere leading up to the mid-season premiere this winter.

This season, USA broke new digital ground as it rolled out innovative social and digital engagements including second screen syncs for every episode. Leading into the premiere, USA was the first network to partner with Tinder, a social discovery app, which introduced SUITS characters into people’s match stream. This generated a recording-setting half a million matches in four weeks. The network also rolled out a new chapter of the award-winning Suits Recruits, an interactive, multi-platform social game. Suitors engaged in record numbers with the legal sequel Suits Recruits: Class Action, which showed an increase of 76% in uniques and 81% in visits from last year.

The “We the People” program started by the Obama Administration, is an online program that allows United States citizens to create petitions that are intended to influence policy. The only catch is that the petition needs to gain  25,000 signatures. Well, a petition for the United States government to build a Death Star reached 34,000 signatures. Yes, you read that right.

So, what did the United States government have to say about this? Well, you can read an official response from Paul Shawcross, Chief of the Science and Space Branch at the White House Office of Management and Budget to the wacky notion of starting construction on a Death Star by 2016 below.

The Administration shares your desire for job creation and a strong national defense, but a Death Star isn’t on the horizon. Here are a few reasons: The construction of the Death Star has been estimated to cost more than $850,000,000,000,000,000. We’re working hard to reduce the deficit, not expand it. The Administration does not support blowing up planets. Why would we spend countless taxpayer dollars on a Death Star with a fundamental flaw that can be exploited by a one-man starship?

However, look carefully (here’s how) and you’ll notice something already floating in the sky — that’s no Moon, it’s a Space Station! Yes, we already have a giant, football field-sized International Space Station in orbit around the Earth that’s helping us learn how humans can live and thrive in space for long durations. The Space Station has six astronauts — American, Russian, and Canadian — living in it right now, conducting research, learning how to live and work in space over long periods of time, routinely welcoming visiting spacecraft and repairing onboard garbage mashers, etc.

We’ve also got two robot science labs — one wielding a laser — roving around Mars, looking at whether life ever existed on the Red Planet. Keep in mind, space is no longer just government-only. Private American companies, through NASA’s Commercial Crew and Cargo Program Office (C3PO), are ferrying cargo — and soon, crew — to space for NASA, and are pursuing human missions to the Moon this decade. Even though the United States doesn’t have anything that can do the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs, we’ve got two spacecraft leaving the Solar System and we’re building a probe that will fly to the exterior layers of the Sun. We are discovering hundreds of new planets in other star systems and building a much more powerful successor to the Hubble Space Telescope that will see back to the early days of the universe. We don’t have a Death Star, but we do have floating robot assistants on the Space Station, a President who knows his way around a light saber and advanced (marshmallow) cannon, and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, which is supporting research on building Luke’s arm, floating droids, and quadruped walkers. We are living in the future! Enjoy it. Or better yet, help build it by pursuing a career in a science, technology, engineering or math-related field.

The President has held the first-ever White House science fairs and Astronomy Night on the South Lawn because he knows these domains are critical to our country’s future, and to ensuring the United States continues leading the world in doing big things. If you do pursue a career in a science, technology, engineering or math-related field, the Force will be with us! Remember, the Death Star’s power to destroy a planet, or even a whole star system, is insignificant next to the power of the Force.

So, should we maybe try and see if we can start a petition to begin The Avengers Initiative next? That one might cost a bit less.

Well, I’m excited.

No info has been revealed, but TVLine has just revealed that the legal dramady has been signed for a 16 episode third season.

The first half of season two finished with quite the cliffhanger. The second half is set to premiere in January, and I couldn’t be more excited!

Not familiar with the show? You should check out the trailer below, and then fall in love with the series just as I have.
