It is T-17 days to Preview Night for San Diego Comic-Con and the official list of con-exclusives is now available on Comic-Con International’s site. Attendees were granted access to the Exhibit Hall map and booth listings about a week ago.

Here are some of the exclusive items that have been covered on Geekscape:

-Mattel (booth #2945; need wristbands from Sails Pavillion) – Monster High Frankie Stein and Robecca Steam/ Hexiciah Steam two-pack

-Hasbro (booth #3329; need wristbands from Sails Pavillion) – Yo-kai Watch Jewelnyan figure set

-Entertainment Earth (booth #2343) – The Force Awakens C-3PO figure

It should be noted that the page reads, “Check back for more companies and exclusives.” As the days count down, additional booths will be added and some will even update with newly revealed items closer to the con. So don’t panic if what you are hoping for isn’t listed yet!

Did you spot anything to put on your “Must Buy” list?

Good Smile Company recently announced that they were releasing a Nendoroid Korra from Nickelodeon’s animated TV show The Legend of Korra. The reveal was a surprise but not without precedent. Other American licenses have had moments in the GSC spotlight. Captain America, Batman, Iron Man, and even the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have their own figures. Given The Legend of Korra‘s aesthetic, it seems a great fit for this style of figure. Now, let’s take a look at her.

NendoKorra1

For the most part, Korra is fairly simple figure. She comes with only one expression, unlike the majority of the other Nendoroids on the market. Her hair is jointed, according to the product listing. Korra comes with two bending effects parts that each have their own stands. She also has interchangeable parts to let her appear as though she is leaping into the air or posing on the ground.

NendoKorra2

Nendoroid Korra is currently only available to pre-order in the United States. She can be found at the Good Smile Company online store as well as partnering retailers. She costs ¥4,444 before tax and is scheduled to ship this November.

Today marks the release of the latest trailer of Pokémon Sun/Moon in Japan. The video showcased a plethora of new monsters that players can look forward to collecting. As for the Pokémon designs, well, its kind of a mixed bag. Let’s take a look at the video.

If you couldn’t catch all of the information flying at you (there was quite a bit), here are some of the highlights:

PokemonSMtrailer8

First, there is the electric/fairy-type, Kapu-Kokeko. I would assume this is one is tied to the story in some way, judging by the little cutscene at the beginning of the trailer.

PokemonSMtrailer7

PokemonSMtrailer6

Next is the bug/electric-type Denjimushi and its evolution, Kuwaganon. Odd-looking thing, isn’t it?

PokemonSMtrailer5

My favorite is this one, the Jijiiron. It is a derpy yet majestic normal/dragon-type.

PokemonSMtrailer4

In the “what on earth?” category is this water/psyhic-type, Hagigishiri. My guess is that the design is supposed to invoke fish native to Hawaii while making monstrous.

PokemonSMtrailer3

This is the bug/fairy-type, Aburii. Not much I can say on this one. A bee-mosquito hybrid?

PokemonSMtrailer2

This round, ball of cuteness is the electric/steel-type togedemaru.

PokemonSMtrailer1

The final highlight is Zygarde’s new form, dubbed “Perfect Form.”

Wow! That is a lot of new stuff to digest. What is your opinion of the new Pokémon shown today?

A visit to J.K. Rowling’s Pottermore site today yields a new Sorting Ceremony for hopeful wizards and witches. This time, you can discover your House for the United States-based magic academy, Ilvermorny. Will you be sorted into Horned Serpent, Pukwudgie, Thunderbird, or Wampus? Take the quiz and find out! It should be noted that you must have a Pottermore account to participate and with the recent site update, old accounts have been discontinued. You can still connect your old account to your new one but it requires that you remember your previous username (and given that those were randomly generated, good luck with that). My username was unfortunately lost to antiquity and I had to start all over, new Hogwarts House and all (I was sorted into Slytherin initially but this time, it was Hufflepuff).

The post on the “news” portion of the site describes the beasts representing the different houses. The Horned Serpent is “great horned river serpent with a jewel set into its forehead.” The Pukwudgie is “a short, grey-faced, large-eared creature.” The thunderbird is monster bird that “can create storms as it flies.” And finally, the Wampus is “a magical, panther-like creature that is fast, strong and almost impossible to kill.”

What house did you get sorted into? Let us know in the comments!

Fans of Yo-kai Watch should pay extra attention to Hasbro’s booths (3213 and 3329) at San Diego Comic-Con. Today, the toy company revealed that one of their con-exclusive items will be a vinyl figure of the Yo-kai Dianyan, bundled with 5 special Yo-kai Medals. The toy will cost US$29.99 and be limited in edition, although exact numbers are not yet known.

Besides looking rather spiffy, the figure will unlock the feline Dianyan in the Yo-kai Watch 3DS game. I don’t know about you guys but I still need that fellow on my team! Additionally, the accompanying Yo-kai Medals are compatible with the Hasbro’s toy version of the Yo-kai Watch.

Can’t make it to the con? Hasbro will have a small batch of them available to purchase on their site after SDCC ends.

Continuing the series of monthly downloads a.k.a. Mystery Gifts to celebrate the Pokémon series’ 20th anniversary, July will bring with it the opportunity to add Shaymin to your team on Pokemon X/Y and Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire. The flowery hedgehog-looking cutie will be available for download in North America starting Friday, July 1. To obtain this Mystery Gift, simply select “Mystery Gift” from the main menu (not within the story), then “Receive Gift,” and finally “Get Via Internet.”

Shaymin will come with the ability “Natural Cure,” which heals the “burn,” “poison,” “sleep,” and “freeze” statuses upon withdrawing from battle. The little guy will be an impressive level 100 and come packed with the moves Seed Flare, Aromatherapy, Substitute, and Energy Ball.

Shaymin will be available until July 24.

It may not have been long ago when Nintendo announced that Yo-kai Watch 2 would be hitting North America this September but over in Japan, it isn’t too long before Yo-kai Watch 3: Sushi and Tempura are released. As the games edge closer to their launch on July 16, more information is revealed.

The latest feature to be highlighted is “My Nyan,” which will give gamers the ability to customize their own cat Yo-kai (think Jibanyan of the first Yo-kai Watch). They will be able to not only choose its voice, face, and outfit but also what yo-kai tribe the kitty will belong to.

While the two versions of Yo-Kai Watch 3 are not currently announced for North America, I certainly hope that they will eventually make the jump overseas. What do you think of this feature? Let us know in the comments!

At Medicom’s 20th anniversary party, the Japanese toy company previewed several new figure prototypes. One particularly spectacular-looking one was The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Link from their Real Action Hero line. Key features of this line are posable figures, fabric clothing, and high quality accessories.

As we can see from the prototype on display, Link will be packaged with at least a sword, shield, bow, and quiver of arrows. I would not be surprised if additional items are included at release.

Pricing and release date are currently unavailable.

We now have less than a month to go until the start of San Diego Comic-Con 2016 and the official booth lists and Exhibit Hall map have been released. The lists of booths are broken down into four categories: Exhibitors, Small Press, Artists’ Alley, and Fan Tables. An interactive version of the floor map can be found here.

After quick glance at Exhibitor list, I spotted Mattel, Funko, Kotobukiya, Disney, Capcom, and Viz Media, to name a few. Seriously though, going through each list took me quite a while. There is so much going on!

Keep an eye on Geekscape.net for SDCC coverage and for those attending the con, be sure to visit the Geekscape.net gang over at Booth #3919! Well, what are you waiting for? Start making those game plans!

Tokyo Toy Fair has just begun and we’ve already got some cool news from our friends at the distributor Bluefin! Bandai’s Chogokin robot figure set, Toy Story Combination Woody Robo Sheriff Star, will be made available for fans in North America. The set includes five characters from the beloved Disney-Pixar film series, Toy Story (Woody, Rex, Bullseye, Hamm, and Slinky Dog) and reimagines them as transforming figures that combine into a larger 9 inch tall robot figure, Woody Robo Sheriff Star. Think of it as Toy Story-flavored Voltron.

Toy Story Chogokin 1

The individual figures look lovely in their own right, don’t they? I love that Woody can ride Bullseye! It is interesting how Buzz Lightyear isn’t included in the set though. Could a separate Buzz-themed Chogokin be in the pipeline?

Toy Story Chogokin 2

The Toy Story Combination Woody Robo Sheriff Star set will cost US$169.99 and is scheduled to release in December 2016. Pre-orders will open at San Diego Comic-Con. Early orders will also include a special picture book. Additional images can be found on Bluefin Tamashii USA’s Facebook page.

In an interesting turn of events, Japanese toy maker Tamashii Nations along with the distributor Bluefin are bringing North American toy collectors an exclusive set of figures in their S.H. Figuarts line. The toys will be based on the those heroes in a half shell, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. The quartet will be released in two waves, with two brothers per release window. The first pair, releasing this summer, are Leonardo and Donatello. Raphael and Michelangelo will follow in October 2016.

Leonardo (Summer 2016):

Donatello (Summer 2016):

Michelangelo (October 2016):

Each figure will retail for $62.99. They stand 6 inches tall, feature real metal accents, and, as you can see from the photos, come with accessories. I particularly like Donatello’s pizza slice! As is expected of the S.H. Figuarts line, the figures come with interchangeable hands and facial expressions and are posable.

Leonardo and Donatello are available for pre-order now. They can be found at authorized Bluefin retailers and many online stores.

Yacht Club Games isn’t done with Shovel Knight yet! The team is busy preparing the next two campaigns for the game starring members of the Order of No Quarter, King Knight and Specter Knight. A short video posted on their twitter feed gives a taste of what to expect from King Knight:

Much like the previously released Plague Knight campaign, beating the original game is not required to unlock the additional characters. Simply inputting a code (which, in the past, Yacht Club Games has shared on social media) at the title screen after the corresponding update will do the job.

The tweet also led to a discussion of additional updates that were part of the Kickstarter‘s stretch goals, specifically Gender Swap Mode. It looks like progress is continuing smoothly on that front as well and fans can expect to gain access to the mode with one of the campaign updates. It is always nice to see a Kickstarter campaign make good on its promises.

What do you think of this news? Will you be revisiting the world of Shovel Knight once again? Let us know in the comments!

With its June 10 release date approaching, the Netflix Original TV show Voltron: Legendary Defender has released another trailer. This time, the trailer is exclusive to IGN and can be found here.  The video gives fans a taste of what to expect in terms of action  and combat scenes. I know was certainly impressed. Shifting camera angles, blends of CG and traditional art, and smooth animation all left me hopeful. Interestingly enough, additional videos and images can be found on the official Voltron Facebook page.

Odin Sphere Leifthrasir is a remastered version of the original Odin Sphere, which was released on the Playstation 2 way back in the day (well 2007). Created by Vanillaware and published by Atlus, the action RPG was heralded as one of the prettiest games of its era. I somehow managed to miss out on playing the original, so I was particularly pleased to hear about Leifthrasir‘s release. As mentioned in a previous article, this new edition features updated graphics, additional mini-bosses, and tweaks to the combat system. While I can’t compare the previous version to this one, I can review the game at face value with a pair of fresh eyes. Note: I played the game on my Playstation Vita.

Odin Sphere Leifthrasir review - attic

Odin Sphere Leifthrasir review -attic bookshelf

The game is broken up into storylines focused on the five main characters: Gwendolyn, Cornelius, Mercedes, Oswald, and Velvet. The heroes’ backstories tie together, leading them to cross each others paths at certain points. The overlying story focuses on a great war between the nations of Erion, the game’s world. The plot was moving, but not overly dramatic and was the main thing that enticed me to continue playing during long gaming sessions. The notes and memos scattered throughout the realm’s battlegrounds help flesh out the game world’s mythology.

Odin Sphere Leifthrasir is a side-scrolling, action RPG. The areas are broken down into different stages, some filled with standard baddies or the larger, more imposing mini-bosses (with one room for the main boss). Other rooms can be designated “Rest Areas” or be tucked-away treasure rooms, occasionally housing a weapon skill-unlocking Phozon Prism. Finding these special items can be as easy as beating a required boss or as tricky as finding a hidden room. In the case of the latter, you are given vague hints in the “skill” menu as to its location.

Battles are fast-paced and require you to make use of blocking and breaking your enemies’ guard, “juggling” your opponents in a mid-air assault, and using available skills as well as alchemic potions. You learn on the go for most of it but there are mini-tutorials on occasion. In regards to alchemy, mixing up potions is simply a matter of either following the recipes (which you will find on the field) or trial and error. I found several mixtures to particularly helpful at certain points, particularly Shine and Restore.

Odin Sphere Leifthrasir - Phozon skill tree

Odin Sphere Leifthrasir review - ability tree

By powering up Phozon Prisms with the phozons you acquire from felling foes, you can tailor your hero to match your fighting style. For example, some skills are more tactical in nature and rely on your character or the enemy to be positioned a certain way to be effective. Character abilities, which can be acquired by spending orbs earned through leveling up, further the tailoring process. You can focus on making your hero more defensive or offensive or even spend you orbs to unlock a discount at merchants. It is a fun aspect to the game that makes playing feel more personalized.

Odin Sphere Leifthrasir review - Maury

Now, I can’t speak for how the original looked back in the PS2 days but holy cow, the Vita version is eye candy at its finest. Between the fluid animation, colorful graphics, and the storybook-like art style, I couldn’t take my eyes off of it. And some of the food looked good enough to eat! The production values felt high overall, with tons of voice acting and a beautiful soundtrack.

I tend to be hesitant to pick up action RPGs because of my poor “gaming reflexes.” But I urge anyone who is even mildly interested in the title to pick it up. I certainly enjoyed my time with the title. What’s more, I can’t find a single thing wrong with it. I believe that earns Odin Sphere Leifthrasir 5 out of 5.

Christine Knopp of KikiDoodle recently launched a Kickstarter campaign for plushes of her Purrmaid character. Half-feline and half-fish, these plushes glow with Christine’s signature art style. Each toy is nearly 16 inches tall and features whimsical details like a real bell around its neck.

Crowdfund this - Purrmaids

Even the page’s description for these furry, finned rascals is adorable and smile-inducing:

Purrmaids are mythical magic sea creatures who live in the oceans all over the world! They love hunting tuna, stealing fish from fisherman, and knocking over items when they’re bored. They look up to Tiger Sharks for their gorgeous markings and sharp teeth. And they hate when sea cucumbers sneak up on them.

The campaign has already met its minimum goal of US$6,500 and will be funded. The first of the stretch goals, the Siamese Fighting Fish or Betta Purrmaid, is next on the list and will unlock when a total of US$12,500 in pledges. At press time, US$10,377 has been pledged and with 34 days left on the campaign, I would say there is a high likelihood of this stretch goal being reached.

Purr maid Kickstarter - betta stretch goal

The Purrmaid plush Kickstarter campaign will close on July 4 at 11:59pm Pacific Daylight Time. You can check it out (and pledge) here.

Keiko Ishihara’s The Heiress and the Chauffeur, one of the newest series for Viz Media’s Shojo Beat line, is a love story set in Japan’s Taisho Period. It is a time when “new money” families begin to emerge in Japan. For Sayaka Yoshimura of one such family, like others before her, acceptance by society does not come easily.

Of course, Sayaka doesn’t seem to care a whit. She is mainly absorbed in dealing with her chauffeur and childhood acquaintance, Shinobu Narutaki. The young man is clearly smitten with her but being of a lower class, such a relationship would be forbidden. It is obvious through her actions that Sayaka reciprocates Narutaki’s feelings but isn’t entirely aware of them herself.

The first volume of a two-part series, this half spends most of its time  establishing relationships: Sayaka with her classmates, Narutaki with others of his rank, and of course, Sayaka with Narutaki. This is all well and good but there was not much progress in the story until chapter 3, the second to last chapter in the book (and my favorite, incidentally).

I hope things pick up in the second volume because it was still an enjoyable read. The art style is lovely and uses a lot of floral motifs in backgrounds and effects, which I somehow found fitting. The writing was also great. Each character felt like they had their own voice: Narutaki spoke more formally to members of higher stations; Sayaka spoke freely as you would expect from a young person of her social rank; and even side characters like Kazuko and Fumi had their own way of speaking.

Volume 1 also includes an adorable bonus story, “Luca and the Bandit.” I loved it! Not terribly long, the story follows a thief and two siblings. I can’t go into much detail without spoiling the ending but I will say the story’s inclusion added a great deal of value to the book in my eyes.

Fans of romantic manga or nonviolent period pieces should give The Heiress and the Chauffeur a look. With its excellent translation, pleasing visuals, and entertaining bonus story, I would give Volume 1 a rating of 4 out of 5.

If you missed out on Vanillaware’s Odin Sphere when it was initially released on the PlayStation 2 or just want to make a return trip to the world of Erion, ATLUS has you covered with their upcoming release of Odin Sphere Leifthrasir for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation Vita. A demo for the game is now available to download for PlayStation 3 and 4 with the Vita version going up on May 31.

What makes this title different from the original? Besides graphics that have been redrawn (yes, “drawn”) for 1080p/60fps, the combat system has received an upgrade and mini-bosses were added to maps in response to fan feedback.

Odin Sphere Leifthrasir is available to pre-order now and releases on June 7. Pre-ordering a copy will net you a free 64-page art book to go with your game, while supplies last. The PlayStation 4 also has an exclusive “Storybook Edition,” which includes a shirt, art print, hardcover art book, metal slipcase and decorative outer box along with the game.

Keep an eye out for Geekscape’s review of Odin Sphere Leifthrasir in the near future!

Build-A-Bear Workshop has been diving headfirst into the movie well and two series in their new “Now Playing” line have caught my attention: Finding Dory and Ghostbusters. The Finding Dory items were released a few days ago in anticipation of the film coming to theaters June 17. Alongside the semi-generic “Ocean Bear” are impressively detailed plushes of Dory and Nemo. The pair are available to be stuffed in store, just like the typical bears, kitties, puppies, and ponies. You can also add voice boxes to them, containing dialogue from the movie.

What I am most excited for, however, is their Ghostbusters series. I mean, that is the cutest Slimer I have ever seen. And who wouldn’t want to dress up their plushes in the Ghostbusters uniform? No one! No one, I say! The toys and outfits are said to be released mid-June.

From downloading rare monsters to attending special events, many Pokémon fans are taking part in activities to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Pokémon series. Rio McCarthy of Rio’s Renditions has chosen to show her fandom by releasing a special line of Pokémon-themed hats in her Etsy shop. These beanies are extremely limited in edition size, three pieces for each of her ten designs (that is 30 total, for all of you playing along at home).

Let’s take a look at some of styles available, shall we?

RiosRenditionsMeowthhat

There is the Meowth hat, perfect for that friend just straight-up loves money. Or cats. Or both (What? They aren’t mutually exclusive).

RiosRenditionsSnorlaxhat

And then there is the Snorlax hat. I wonder if it would double as a sleeping cap?

RiosRenditionsMunchlaxHat

Rio also has a Munchlax hat, which would make for some pretty awesome family photos when paired with the Snorlax one.

Other hats in the line include Jigglypuff (as seen in the header), Ditto, Psyduck, Marill, Lucario, Raichu, and of course, Pikachu. Prices range from US$25 to US$35, depending on the complexity of the pattern. Each hat is handmade with care by Rio herself. You can follow her store on Facebook, Pinterest, and Instagram.

Mattel’s MattyCollector.com Facebook page has been posting teasers for one of its San Diego Comic-Con exclusives over the past several days. It has already been announced that the figure will be of She-Ra from Mattel’s “Masters of the Universe” line but fans have only gotten snippets of the overall image along with morsels of info. Yesterday, the page revealed that the figure will come with multiple outfits and from the looks of them, some pieces are made of fabric, not just snap-on plastic armor. Let’s just hope she has doll hair instead of the standard molded stuff typical to the series.

Here is what MattyCollector has shown us so far:

she-rateaser2 she-rateaser1 SDCCshe-rateaser3

It certainly looks like some serious effort was put into this! The price for this exclusive hasn’t been announced yet but I can’t imagine it will be cheap, given the detail of the toy and the intensity of the fanbase. Those interested can follow along with the daily teasers on MattyCollector.com’s Facebook page.

Japanese gamers may be awaiting the third installment to Yo-kai Watch but fans in North America will finally get their hands on Yo-kai Watch 2 on September 30. Readers may remember the original getting high marks in our review and hopefully this next round will follow in its footsteps.

There are a few changes this time, however. For starters, taking a page from Pokémon‘s playbook, there are now two versions of the game, each containing different rare yo-kai to befriend. The subtitles for those games are, um, unconventional. Okay, they are straight-up weird as in we-probably-should-have-thought-this-over-more weird. The two options for fans to chose between are Bony Spirits and Fleshy Souls. Ridiculous naming choices aside, the game will also have a different setting. Your character will be making a visit to your hometown of Springdale as it was 100 years in the past. Prepare for some time travel shenanigans!

In support of the upcoming titles, Hasbro will sell an updated model of Yo-kai Watch to match the new game’s design along with new Medals called “Yo-motion Yo-kai Medals.” Custom accessories, large plushes, and electronic figures are also in the works. And TCG fans will be excited to learn that a Yo-kai Watch Trading Card Game is coming their way.

If you have ever attended San Diego Comic-Con, you probably remember seeing (or maybe even waiting in) the line at Mattel’s booth to purchase some of the convention-exclusive merchandise. Amongst their library of popular franchises is Monster High, a series which will be the focus of two of the booth’s exclusives this year.

SDCC16 GhostBusters Frankie

Perhaps the most interesting of the two is Frankie Stein as a Ghost Buster, complete with mini Slimer figurine. This item most likely hopes to capitalize on the buzz from the Ghost Busters reboot which will debut this summer. I will say, of all the mashups Mattel could have chosen, this one does work well.

SDCC16 Robecca and Hexiciah

The next exclusive is actually a two-pack, starring the steampunk-inspired daughter and father duo, Robecca Steam and Hexiciah Steam. Adding in the father to the bundle was a creative choice and I will be interested to see fans’ reactions.

Pricing for the two items is not currently known. Mattel’s booth number hasn’t been listed yet either. Keep your eyes on Geekscape for additional SDCC news as it trickles in.

July 15 will not only mark the release of the latest entry in Capcom’s Monster Hunter series, Monster Hunter Generations, but the launch of a themed special edition New Nintendo 3DS XL as well. The system will be specially colored, blue in North America and Red for Europe. Both regions’ will feature the same art on the 3DS’s top shell, an emblem of the “Fated Four,” the main monstrous quartet from the game.

Monster Hunter Generations New Nintendo 3DS XL

It should be noted that Monster Hunter is a series that greatly benefits from the New Nintendo 3DS XL’s C-stick and ZL and ZR buttons. The former makes controlling the camera a breeze and the latter can be assigned to the new Hunter Artes. The standard New Nintendo 3DS also has these features.

A price for this system has not been listed but I imagine that it will cost about the same as other special editions, US$199.99. Regrettably, the game is not included. Neither is the AC adapter cable. While these omissions are not uncommon, it stings nonetheless.

What do you think of the New Nintendo 3DS XL – Monster Hunter Generation edition? Will you be adding it to your collection?

VIZ Media recently released a limited edition art book, Blanc et Noir, featuring Takeshi Obata’s work. I can’t imagine many anime fans haven’t at least seen his art in passing. The artist is perhaps best known for Death Note but he also drew Bakuman and Hikaru no Go (my favorite of his series).

review - Blanc et Noir, Obata Takeshi 4

OBATA TAKESHI ILLUSTRATIONS -Blanc et Noir- © 2006 by Takeshi Obata/SHUEISHA Inc.

With a title like Blanc et Noir, you can imagine that the images housed within are dark or sinister. But you would only be half-right. Yes, the majority of the pages are dedicated Death Note and its grim-looking cast but the rest of the (surprisingly heavy) book contains drawings from Hikaru no Go along with promo art from throughout Obata-san’s career and even some original works (see the image directly below.) One of the features are the author’s notes in the back, completely translated to English. The notes describe each page, including what series it is taken from, inspirations for the drawing, and other tidbits. I am glad they included this part as it adds a lot more depth to the pictures included.

review - Blanc et Noir, Obata Takeshi 2

OBATA TAKESHI ILLUSTRATIONS -Blanc et Noir- © 2006 by Takeshi Obata/SHUEISHA Inc.

The quality of the book itself is impressive. The pages are large, as if you were holding a portfolio of thick posters. Some of the pages have a sort of film on them (which can be pulled away) or on a different textured paper (most are on a glossy-type page) to give certain images a different look The cover is a smooth matte black with a simple embossed silver emblem on the front. And the book is hefty! It has 132 pages of illustrations not to mention a four-page “How To Draw Section” and 12 pages of author’s notes.

review - Blanc et Noir, Obata Takeshi cover

OBATA TAKESHI ILLUSTRATIONS -Blanc et Noir- © 2006 by Takeshi Obata/SHUEISHA Inc.

Included with Blanc et Noir are three lithographs from art also found in the book. Those and the book are housed within a sturdy, textured book sleeve. Only 10,000 of this title were printed.

The edition size plus the quality of the product would justify the $99.99 price tag for most collectors and fans of Obata-san.  Even if you aren’t familiar with his work, it still makes for a cool book to display on your coffee table (people still do that, right?) if you can fit it into your budget. The cost is really the only downside to an otherwise awesome art book.

I would give Takeshi Obata’s Blanc et Noir4.5 out of 5. The book itself is spectacular but the price is a barrier some fans may not be able to get past.

With this being the 20th anniversary for the Pokémon series, it seems only natural that print media get in on the celebration. And no celebration is complete without cake! Or apparently sushi, pizza, or ramen. VIZ Media will release Maki Kudo’s The Pokémon Cookbook: Fun & Easy Recipes on December 6 and it is packed with 35 pocket monster-inspired recipes.

The book’s recipes will range from snacks to entrees to desserts. Pokéball sushi rolls, Pikachu-style ramen, and something called “Meowth” potatoes are some the dishes you’ll learn to make. Here’s hoping they cover bento art in some form or another.

Fans can purchase The Pokémon Cookbook: Fun & Easy Recipes this holiday season for US$14.99/CAN$17.99. In the meantime, take a gander at the Japanese version’s cover (seen below).

PokemonCookbook-JapaneseEdition

It looks the Zygarde Mystery Gift distribution will end sooner than anticipated. The current online download, which is available for Pokémon X/Y as well as Alpha Sapphire/ Omega Ruby, will end on May 8 in North America. But, don’t despair; the Order Pokémon will be replaced with two very special subsequent downloads: shiny Xerneas and shiny Yveltal.

Xerneas will be available first, running from May 11 to May 17, with Yveltal taking its place from May 20 to May 26. Like Zygarde, these Pokémon can be acquired by selecting the “Mystery Gift” setting on the title screen and choosing the “Get over Internet” option. No need to get a code from a video game store.

Xerneas will arrive with the move set: Geomancy, Moonblast, Aromatherapy, and Focus Blast. Yveltal will have Oblivion Wing, Sucker Punch, Dark Pulse, and Foul Play. Both will be level 100.

No word yet on European distribution.

Besides fan blogs’ accounts of constructions at Walt Disney World’s Animal Kingdom, news of progress on Pandora, the upcoming area in Walt Disney World’s Animal Kingdom themed to James Cameron’s AVATAR, have been few and far between. Okay, they have been pretty much nonexistent. The Official Disney Parks Blog finally posted some snippets and photos earlier today and I must say I am disappointed.

Let’s be honest: the “buzz” surrounding AVATAR has all but fizzled out. I get that company money is a tad scarce lately (blame Shanghai Disneyland) but they really should have put more focus on opening this “land” sooner. And to make matters worse, these images of ambitious concepts are making the already far-off 2017 opening window look unrealistic.

Don’t get me wrong; I would love to be proven incorrect about Pandora. I am a huge Disney fan and fervently want the Parks to succeed. But I can’t see this business move as anything but a mistake.

The latest Humble Bundle announced, “Friends of Nintendo,” is certainly one for Nintendo fans to consider. It is jam-packed with tons of worthwhile Nintendo Wii U and 3DS games to purchase, $179 worth to be precise. And unlike the previous Nintendo-themed Bundle, this one can be redeemed by European gamers along with their North American compatriots. The charities supported by this bundle are code.org and SOS Children’s Village.

Those who donate $1 or more, will unlock eShop codes to Retro City Rampage: DX for the 3DS, Affordable Space Adventures for the Wii U, as well as Shantae and The Pirate’s Curse (review) for both the Wii U and 3DS.

Donate more than $13 to receive eShop codes for Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition (review) for the 3DS plus Darksiders II for the Wii U.

But wait, there’s more! Donate more than the average of $9.76 to get codes for Freedom Planet for the 3DS, Citizens of Earth (review) for the 3DS or Wii U (your choice), and Rhythm Thief & The Emperor’s Treasure for the 3DS. You will also be unlock an exclusive 3DS Home Menu theme from Retro City Rampage: DX. More games will be added to this list “soon.”

As a fan of Capcom’s Monster Hunter series, I had high hopes for VIZ Media’s first volume of Monster Hunter: Flash Hunter, featuring art drawn by Shin Yamamoto and a story penned by Keiichi Hikami. Unfortunately, only some of those expectations were met. As one would anticipate, the manga caters to those that have played the games but it goes so much in that direction that the book’s story is lacking in depth (at least in volume 1).

I don’t generally like to start a review off on a negative note but I feel like the story or lack thereof should be addressed sooner rather than later. I think if I wasn’t as excited for this title as I was, I wouldn’t have been so disappointed. But that is the problem. The majority of people who will pick up this manga are going to be fans. And from my experience, those readers are also going to have experience with manga on some level.

The story centers around a hot-headed hunter named Raiga from the village of Dundorma. Volume 1 mainly outlines how he meets his teammates, the skilled gunner Keres and the bookish Torche. After Keres and Raiga meet, they are constantly butting heads, leading most of their exchanges to basically boil down to arguments (see the page above for a good example). The remaining dialogue is either flavorless or, in the case of hunting scenes, reads like a strategy guide. The characters get hung up on details of hunting strategies, equipment, and items. I can definitely see this being a turn-off for unfamiliar readers.

The manga’s art is a double-edged sword. Fans can clearly identify the sets of armor each of the characters are wearing as ones from the video games. Even in action sequences, you can pick them out. Same goes for the monsters. When a monster appears for the first time, a bare-bones bio is listed for it but, once again, fans will have no trouble naming them. The art for Qurupeco and Rathian impressed me the most.

So what’s the negative side of the art? With the exception of a few intro pages, The backgrounds are sparse at best. The Monster Hunter series has some fun environments and it’s a shame that they weren’t included as backdrops.

I would give volume 1 of Monster Hunter: Flash Hunter a 2 out of 5. Yes, the series has potential (and it still could improve in volume 2) but as it stands, that potential is wasted. I would have been happier with an art book drawn in this style.

In just two hours, the Kickstarter campaign for Cryptozoic Entertainment’s Ghostbusters: The Board Game II had already reached its minimum pledge goal. Honestly, I am not surprised one bit. For starters, the original had a huge fanbase. And after demoing a prototype version at this year’s WonderCon, I can see where the draw is. What Ghostbusters fan wouldn’t dig a game that draws references not just from the movies, but also the cartoons, comics, and toy lines?  For those wanting to see the game in action, the team whipped a tutorial video. Let’s check it out.

Not only has the minimum pledge goal of $250,000 been met but a good chunk of the stretch goals are unlocked as well. There are 23 days left to go and at press time, there is already $523,657 in pledges.

The base pledge that nets you the game costs $80. There are, of course other tiers that can get you rewards such as exclusive expansions, limited edition figures, and for high-rollers, the opportunity to bring your own ghost to life (afterlife?) or be written into IDW’s Ghostbusters comic.

I had a blast demoing the game and would definitely recommend that Ghostbusters fans  and board game players check it out.The Kickstarter for Ghostbusters: The Board Game II will end on May 9.
