Entertainment Earth‘s San Diego Comic-Con booth was a treasure trove of pop culture collectibles. A ton of different licenses were showcased within the display cases that the surrounded the booth (which was then surrounded by lines of attendees). Here are some of the highlights!

With Star Trek celebrating its 50th anniversary, there was plenty of merchandise to go around. One of the highlights was the Kirk versus Spock bobble head set taken from the episode, “Amok Time.” The figures are numbered and the base plays music from the show. Another item was a crossover between Star Trek and The Big Bang Theory. Part of Bif Bang Pow!’s new Pin Mate line (more on that in a moment), the set places the cast of TBBT in Star Trek uniforms.

One of the con-exclusives this year was a pink variant of the Wonder Woman Chair Cape (to commemorate the hero’s 75th anniversary). The Chair Capes stem from the desire to share a love of pop culture in daily life. Beyond the con-exclusive Wonder Woman variant, there was also capes from Batman BeyondSuperman, among others.

IMG_0463

Batman was another hot property and inspired one of the con-exclusives, a Jack-in-the-box based on Joker from The Dark Knight. I’ll admit, this one creeped me a bit. There was also a set of Pin Mates starring the characters of Suicide Squad.

IMG_0473

Let’s talk about Pin Mates for a second. They are part of Bif Bang Pow!’s movement to combine simple, nostalgic toy designs with current pop culture icons. In the Pin Mates case, the figures are made of wood and hand-painted. Convention-exclusives from this line include previously mentioned Star Trek/ The Big Bang Theory set and the Suicide Squad set plus a two-pack from Antman, which I though was pretty clever.

IMG_0457

Also of a nostalgic nature is the four-inch wooden push puppet of Guardians of The Galaxy‘s Groot. I am told this will not be the only GotG puppet to be made. However, they may not all be of the “push” variety.

Entertainment Earth has listed their remaining SDCC-exclusive merchandise on their online store. Supplies are limited, so don’t miss out!

With a month left before release, Paramount Pictures has released the final trailer for the third entry in the rebooted Star Trek franchise. Along with new footage, the trailer features a new song by Rihanna entitled ‘Sledgehammer’.

Fans were critical of  the first trailer for Star Trek Beyond due to the use of ‘Sabotage‘ by the Beastie Boys. Some felt the music felt out of place, and it will be interesting to see what the response will be with this trailer. Besides the new music, we do get treated to an extended look at the attack on the Enterprise as well as a great final shot (which we won’t spoil here).

Geekscapists, what say you? Is the marketing campaign for Star Trek Beyond effective? If it were up to you, what music would you feature in a Star Trek trailer? Sound off in the comments below.

Star Trek Beyond is out in theaters Friday, July 22.

Briefly: It’s another sad, sad day in Hollywood, as the world reacts to the death of another young star.

Anton Yelchin, who portrayed Chekov in Star TrekStar Trek Into Darkness, and Star Trek Beyond, as well the titular character in 2007’s criminally underrated Charlie Bartlett was found dead near his home early this morning.

According to TMZ, who was first to report the news, the actor was found pinned between his car and a brick mailbox, which was attached to a security gate. They note that “the engine was running when his body was discovered, and the car was in neutral. The driveway was on a fairly steep incline. It’s unclear why he got out of the car.”

As a huge fan of Anton throughout his career, this news came as quite a shock. Our thoughts go out to Anton’s family and friends.

Wow, 2016 has been quite the upsetting year, hasn’t it?

Yelchin

Briefly: Wow.

This announcement is long overdue, but better late than never, right?

StarTrek.com has revealed that a brand new Star Trek series is in the works, and is set to debut on CBS in January of 2017.

Now, you won’t be able to watch the entire series on tradition cable, instead, the new Star Trek will be “the first original series developed specifically for U.S. audiences for CBS All Access, a cross-platform streaming service that brings viewers thousands of episodes from CBS’s current and past seasons on demand, plus the ability to stream their local CBS Television station live for $5.99 per month. CBS All Access already offers every episode of all previous Star Trek television series.”

This seems like an absolutely phenomenal way to get individuals to subscribe to your streaming service. The show is being produced “for television and multiple platforms around the world by CBS Studios International,” so hopefully those outside of the United States aren’t completely left out like we were with Yahoo!’s offerings.

According to the release, “the brand-new Star Trek will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966.”

The new series will be produced by CBS Television Studios in association with Kurtzman’s Secret Hideout. Kurtzman and Heather Kadin will serve as executive producers. Kurtzman is also an executive producer for the hit CBS television series Scorpion and Limitless, along with Kadin and Orci, and for Hawaii Five-0 with Orci.

David Stapf, President, CBS Television Studios, says that “There is no better time to give Star Trek fans a new series than on the heels of the original show’s 50th anniversary celebration. Everyone here has great respect for this storied franchise, and we’re excited to launch its next television chapter in the creative mind and skilled hands of Alex Kurtzman, someone who knows this world and its audience intimately.”

The release also states that “The new television series is not related to the upcoming feature film Star Trek Beyond which is scheduled to be distributed by Paramount Pictures in Summer 2016,”so it looks as though we could be getting an entirely new, fresh take on the franchise.

I was a big fan of Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness, so as cool as a new take would be, I’d also love to see just what’s going on in that already existing universe! In any case, I’m pretty happy about this announcement.

You can head here for the full release. Be sure to let us know if you’re excited for this new series, and if you’ll be subscribing to CBS All Access because of it!

Star Trek 2 Klingon Banner

James Horner has tragically passed away. He was 61.

Reported on Monday by his assistant Sylvia Patrycja on Facebook, the Oscar-winning film composer was piloting a plane 60 miles north of Santa Barbara. The plane was reported down by police, but it was unknown what happened to its pilot until now. (Source.)

Not much is known beyond that, including what happened during his flight, but I personally think that stuff is irrelevant right now. We’ll know that when we’re told, let’s not speculate. We lost a great artist, and that’s what’s important.

To say James Horner had a stellar career is an understatement. In his short 61 years on Earth, Horner earned himself immortality by leaving his mark in the world of cinema. He scored countless of iconic movies we’ll remember until our civilization is dust.

You can scroll through the long list yourself, but some key works you’ll probably be most interested in include Star Trek II: The Wrath of KhanAliens, A Beautiful MindAn American Tail (which he earned an Oscar nom for), Field of Dreams (another Oscar nomination), Apollo 13 (yet another Oscar nom), and Titanic (an Oscar WIN). His career certainly doesn’t end there, not when there are more Oscars to get nominated for, but to list them all would be a chore. The upcoming Southpaw will be his latest work.

James Horner was just one of the best. There is comparison, but that’s not the time or place for that now.

There’s one work in particular of his I’d like to highlight: Casper.

Let’s be clear: Casper is kind of a shitty movie. It’s sweet but tonally confusing, with numbingly slow pacing and flawed direction. But if there’s one saving grace, it’s James Horner’s score. Fusing together an ethereal, angelic mystique over a sleepy northeastern harbor town resulted in a beautiful, utterly haunting score that deserves both adjectives. Puns be damned. Most of the soundtrack takes on a whimsical flair — with some tweaking it could score a romantic comedy set in Manhattan — but Horner hits his stride on the Casper soundtrack with “Casper’s Lullaby.” I guarantee that if you play this song to anyone who had any kind of memory with Casper, this is the one that will trigger every sensation and memory.

I thought I’d share this one with you today. It may be tasteless, given that it’s a movie about ghosts and it plays at every scene that tugs so hard on your heartstrings it feels disingenuous, but I really think it’s one of Horner’s best and most under appreciated compositions. Whatever memories you attach to this or to any of Horner’s other work, I hope they are pleasant enough to make you smile when the day is difficult. And not to drag in the ugly outside world right now, but for many of us the very recent times have been testing our patience and tolerance. We still don’t know how to live with each other peacefully, but if art makes life worth living then I hope there’s some art in Horner’s work that inspires you to keep on going. This one is mine.

Could we ask for a better science fiction crossover!? This July Green Lantern will meet Star Trek in a six-part comic book crossover event! Star Trek/Green Lantern: The Spectrum War. The monthly mini-series will be written by veteran Star Trek comic writer Mike Johnson with art by Angel Hernandez (Infinite Crisis: Fight for the Multiverse, Arrow).

In a press release IDW President and COO states Greg Goldstein “We’ve looked forward to bringing these two iconic universes together for a long time, Star Trek and Green Lantern both share so many of the same science-fiction adventure themes and ideals, that a galaxy-spanning crossover like this is simply… logical.”

Star Trek/Green Lantern: The Spectrum War #1 will be available in stores and online in July and have covers from Gabriel Rodriguez, Francesco Francavilla, Elsa Charretier, and Garry Brown.

Troubling news. Most troubling.

According to a TMZ report, Leonard Nimoy has been sent to the hospital after severe chest pains prompted a call to emergency services.

The report had this to say:

We’re told paramedics weren’t taking chances with Captain Spock and got him in front of a doctor ASAP. Nimoy’s been in and out of hospitals multiple times in the last few months.

Nimoy announced he was suffering from COPD back in 2014, and even though he quit smoking more than 30 years ago … he blames his illness on decades of lighting up.

In a sort of…odd poetic coincidence, his most recent tweet has a very somber tone.

Nothing much else to report. We will keep you updated as more information is released.

Our hearts and prayers go out to Leonard. He is one of the greats, one of the amazing few that helped make US geeks who we are today.

YOU HAVE TO OUTLIVE SHATNER LEONARD!

This week film journalism arguably became (one of, let’s not get carried away) the most important subject in the national conversation. It has been a hell of a week, from the surreal to the maddening, and it’s hard to look at any movie news without getting a bit frustrated at the state of affairs. But Deadline just reported something that has made my heart sing: Justin Lin, currently directing True Detective season two but renowned for every Fast & Furious film since Tokyo Drift will helm  Star Trek 3.

Almost everything about this is awesome.

From Deadline:

He is available because he was going to direct the sequel to The Bourne Legacy spinoff with Jeremy Renner, but that film got postponed when Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass agreed to do another installment of The Bourne Identity, which Universal wants to come first. Lin was courted to return to the Fast & Furious franchise to do a multi-part finale, but I am not sure whether that will be in the cards in light of the Star Trek job. Orci remains a producer on the Star Trek film.

Where do I begin with my excitement? I love the Fast & Furious movies. It’s a wildly misunderstood series, mistaken for something to leave on the TV while you do yard work or chores. But it’s not! It is, without pretense, the most fun and ever-changing blockbuster franchise that warps your perception of what these films are all about with each installment. The action pieces are brilliantly put-together, and the central characters ooze charm. You want to be invited to their barbecues.

But what of Lin? Thought to be a dying series after 2 Fast 2 Furious, Lin transformed the Fast movies starting with Tokyo Drift, also a totally misunderstood movie. It comes off as the most direct-to-DVD of the entire franchise, but it’s a wonderful film and a door to a whole other world that exists in the crazy Fast universe. Had Lin stopped at Tokyo Drift his selection to direct Star Trek 3 would still be in question, even I would admit. But it was the crazy-awesome Fast Five and Fast & Furious 6 that legitimizes Lin as the guy to do Star Trek 3. Next to The Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy, both Fast Five and Fast & Furious 6 are expert demonstrations on ensemble action blockbusters. How do you make a compelling action movie with a wide cast of characters? If you’re an aspiring creative, take notes and watch the last two Fast movies. How Lin managed to make goofs driving willy-nilly compelling and visceral is outstanding.

Lastly, on the subject of ethnicity. It’s incredible, at least to me, that the Fast series, one of Hollywood’s leading franchises, has largely been directed by people of color. Roberto Orci is Latino, but without a proven track record as director it was hard to get excited for him as a creative. Lin, one of the top contenders of blockbuster filmmaking, has without a doubt proved he can do a film as massive as Star Trek, and his choosing honors Star Trek and sci-fi in general from their own lessons in progressive social politics. On that note, I urge you to watch Justin Lin’s Better Luck Tomorrow, an excellent film that can kickstart any conversation about Asian-Americans and the bullshit “model minority.”

Even if that’s not your jive, come on, the dude who made the best episode of Community is now doing Star Trek. Get hyped.

Deadline has just reported that everybody’s favorite Hollywood producer Roberto Orci (Get it? Because he isn’t?) is no longer directing the third installment of the current Star Trek film franchise. Furthermore, everyone’s favorite director Edgar Wright (Not sarcasm) is at the top of a short list to take over.

Trek fans will be partying pretty hard tonight. You know, more than usual.

It has been an interesting year for Orci. After splitting up with longtime partner Alex Kurtzman, Orci was assigned director of Star Trek and producer of 2016’s Power Rangers. We are less than a month away from the New Year and Orci is out of both projects. He and Kurtzman are still working together on TV with Sleepy Hollow, however.

Star Trek 3 would have been Orci’s first time directing a film, of any kind. Although he’s been everywhere in Hollywood, directing he has never done. Not even a commercial or a music video, and earlier this year he was given the keys to dad’s sports car. Not to discount that amazing opportunity, I would fight tooth and nail to defend that decision if it were given to me. But as the circumstances of Orci’s departure are unknown, one can only speculate what caused Paramount (or anyone calling the shots) to blink.

Edgar Wright’s involvement is still up in the air, but can we take a moment to imagine how banging of a job he could do? Forget that Simon Pegg is a part of the Enterprise and their director/actor relationship in a major film would be glorious to see. No, just remember who Edgar Wright is. His visual language. Now put that in space. This is a total 180 from how I felt about Star Trek 3 before today.

However, Roberto Orci will stay on as producer and maintain some writing credit.

UPDATE: Badass Digest is saying Orci was out because of the script.

From Badass Digest:

[UPDATE: I’ve been in touch with some folks and it seems like the script was one of the problem factors. Paramount shut the production down last month, sending home all the design people while they battled over the direction of the screenplay. I imagine all this stuff is gone now]

Meet Marc Okrand. A very unassuming man who most people would give a second glance. Marc Okrand has a secret. He is quite the cunning linguist, because Marc Okrand invented one of the most famous fictional languages. Klingon. Grab some Bloodwine and serve up a plate of Gagh and let Marc lead you on a journey of what went into creating the language.

Indie Sci Fi director Neil Johnson has been a friend for a few years and an avid Geekscape listener for the same amount of time! One of the first directors to make a fully digital film, and science fiction film at that, Neil and I sat down to talk about the challenge of making low budget science fiction movies and indie filmmaking. Neil also justifies the Star Wars prequels better than anyone ever has before and talks about his upcoming film ‘Starship Rising’. Things get very personal on this episode as we talk about our approaches and inspirations. This is easily one of my favorite Geekscape’s yet!

George Takei represents different things to different people. For frequenters of Comicon extravaganzas all across the globe, he’s a pop icon renowned for his role as Captain Hikaru Sulu on three seasons and six films regarding the sci-fi classic, Star Trek. And to fans of his uncharacteristically popular Facebook page, Takei is an ingenious source of laughs on a daily basis. But for all of these various masks and titles that Takei proudly displays, the people closest to him are most thankful for George’s life as a pioneer in multiple civil rights movements.

In the documentary To Be Takei from filmmaker Jennifer M. Kroot, the audience is catapulted into the life and struggles of a true trailblazer. The feature exams many facets of Takei’s personal life, including his time as a Japanese-American youth placed in harsh internment camps following the bombing of Pearl Harbor, and George’s secretive upbringing as a closet homosexual actor trying to make a name for himself in Los Angeles. For Takei, the road has never been easy, but he’s also never shied away from adversity.

takei1

For 90 entertaining minutes filled with laughter and sincerity, George and his now husband, but partner for 25 years, Brad Takei (formerly Brad Altman), dive into the inner workings of the aging performer’s life. We witness George’s outspoken stance on gay rights as well as his involvement in the newly released musical “Allegiance”, which details a Japanese-American man’s imprisonment by the U.S. government during the end of World War II. The musical closely resembles the Takei family’s hardships during one of our nation’s most heinous acts and is a remarkable source of passion for the multi-talented star.

takei2

To Be Takei not only focuses on these serious moral platforms which inhabit George’s life, it also ventures into his well-documented and long-lasting feud with former co-star, William Shatner. The documentary provides a first-hand look at the infamous rivalry and perhaps why it has escalated to such heights. Furthermore, To Be Takei briefly discusses George’s time and inclusion on Howard Stern’s wildly popular radio show. You truly learn everything there is to know about this amazing man and the movie is both hilarious and earnest in its storytelling.

Unlike many other documentaries, To Be Takei never feels too agenda-driven and instead works to transport the viewer into the brilliant life of George Takei. Sure its subject clearly has a motivation and message of spreading equality in all areas of life across the United States, but that’s merely because it’s what George Takei represents. To Be Takei is a joyous watch and something any fan will certainly enjoy.

GRADE: 4/5

At a recent convention, I had the pleasure of interviewing the creative team behind the new sci-fi thriller The 5th Passenger. Read on to learn about this riveting indie film!

5P_Poster_WONDERCON_V2

Kari: Hi! This is Kari with Geekscape, and I am here with the creators of The 5th Passenger. Why don’t you introduce yourself?

Morgan: Hi! My name is Morgan Lariah and I’m the co-writer, co-producer and actress in The 5th Passenger.

Scott: I’m Scott Baker. Co-writer, producer and director.

K: Very cool. Now what got you started on this project? Where was the inception?

S: This was based off an idea that I had several years ago and I had been kind of kicking it around for awhile. I wrote a couple scenes for the feature just to kinda see how they felt and did a table read with some actor friends and then I met Morgan and she really fit one of the roles that I had written for it. So I asked her to take a look at the scenes and she liked the scenes, and we sat down and just over the next couple months just wrote out–.  Just went through and wrote out the whole film. Just kind of going back and forth. I would write a scene and she would read it and give me notes, and we would sit down and talk about it. Or read the scene out ourselves and see how it felt. It was just that kind of process going back and forth for several months as we developed the story.

K: Now, Morgan why don’t you give me the synopsis so everyone can know what this project is about?

M: Of course. So 5th Passenger is about four astronauts on an escape pod. The mothership has imploded and unfortunately the positioning system on the escape pod is broken, they’re off their flight path and they are running out of resources quickly. So in a last attempt to fix the positioning system, one of them goes out to fix it…which he does…but as he gets back into the escape pod an alien follows him in and chaos ensues…and that’s our story.

Screen Shot 2013-02-12 at 6.16.36 PM

K: And it is a full feature, correct?

M: That is correct.

K: What is the current status of the project?

M: We are in pre-production. We have some really great Star Trek actors attached. We have Manu Intiraymi, Tim Russ, Ethan Phillips and Scott is directing, of course–.  Various other key components–.  We have this amazing makeup special effects designer, Thomas Surprenant, who is fantastic–.  And  so we have this whole package together and we are just looking for some funding. So that’s where we are.

K: And then in regards to funding, how can people go check out what you have or help out?

M: Oh, super easy. People can go to our facebook page, www.facebook.com/5thpassenger and ‘like’ us, that would be awesome. We are also on twitter @5thpassenger and they can watch the trailer on our website 5thPassenger.com. So, just follow us and ‘like’ us and we’d love to hear from you. We love being here and talking to everyone. Everyone has been so positive about the trailer and it’s really really exciting and we really think this is a story that definitely has a place in today and that people want to see and hear.

K: And since you’re an actor in it, what can you tell us about your character?

M: Sure. Absolutely. So I play Eve Miller and she happens to be the commanding officer in this escape pod. These four assigned to this escape pod were–.  It was just a random assignment. So, they didn’t know each other before this and they find themselves in this intense situation and she just happens to be the only female and she happens to be younger than everyone else. So she is a very ambitious, to the book officer, but she up against a lot and they’re not making it and of course she is the one in charge so it’s her fault. So she has a lot of conflict going on.

Screen Shot 2013-02-12 at 8.08.02 PM

K: So kind of a reverse harem, but not quite?

M: That’s one way to look at it. (laughs) I don’t think Miller sees it that way. In fact, she–.  That’s something she’s constantly thinking about; that this could turn any minute. It’s a dangerous situation I think for any woman, especially given the circumstances. So, it’s, its–.  Me when I was working on it, it’s always at the back of my mind like this could go bad and in fact,… a little bit…I don’t want to give too much away, but a little bit of that does work itself into the story and I don’t know–.  I think–.  I think it’s interesting.

K: So with the close quarters, were there any bouts of claustrophobia?

Screen Shot 2013-02-12 at 8.04.46 PM

M: Absolutely, and it’s such a great story because it’s four people in a room and it’s about claustrophobia, and the fact the water is running out, oxygen is running out–.  How does that affect you? Food is running out. What does this do to your mental state, what does this do to your emotional state and of course these people are annoying cause you’re seeing them all the time. So how do you remain civil and try to make the best of things and each character approaches it in their own way of course, but it is society breaking down in this room.

K: And Scott, in terms of writing it and bringing this story about–.  Were there any particular stories that influenced you or were in the back of your mind when you were creating this content?

Screen Shot 2013-02-12 at 8.11.55 PM

S: Yeah, we sort of pitched the film as Alfred Hitchcock’s Lifeboat meets Aliens. So, it has that feel of being a lifeboat in space and Ridley Scott’s Alien was definitely one of my favorite films. So there is a lot of influence there. I grew up loving the Twilight Zone and that is like a recurring theme within that is–.  Is people put in these extreme situations and seeing how they react and how society breaks down and how people’s morals and values and ethics are tested. So those are some of the things that influenced me and of course, 2001: A Space Odyssey and Moon with Sam Rockwell was another film that like, visually is an influence as we’re kind of putting the whole package together thinking about what this ship is going to look like? What are the costumes going to be? Things like that.

Screen Shot 2013-07-29 at 9.12.18 PM

K: Since it’s the close quarters and people, it is definitely–  It sounds like its an observation on humanity and what people would do in extreme situations?

S: Yeah, yeah definitely that is the idea. I really love that kind of story. Having these characters that maybe on first glance seem very two dimensional but really they’re sort of archetypes for the different types of people that you meet every day, and seeing how they interact with each other is really just a reflection on who we are and… sorta like our animalistic instincts. And how those things play out and how everybody deals with that on a personal level–.  Where you know that person next to you is another human being and they’re part of society with you but there’s that part of you that also sees them like as a competitor, someone that you are fighting for resources over and things like that.

K: So if you both were stuck on this little spacecraft, how do you think you would fare, if it was real life?

M: I actually have great confidence that Scott and I would be fine. Scott–.  I test Scott daily (laughs) and he is always very accommodating and he’s very clever. In fact I have thought about it, and I think if you had to pick like five people to be on a desert island, I would definitely pick Scott as one of them because like I said, he’s really hilarious and we’re always laughing and he fixes things and finds the answer to a lot of problems. So, I think we would be fine.

Screen Shot 2013-02-12 at 8.05.16 PM

K: Same feelings there towards Morgan?

S: Uh yeah, I mean I think it’s great that she trusts me because she would be there for me the whole time and then right when I need her I would be able to eat her when stuff gets going bad. So I think that’s perfect. That works out great.

K: So, it’s like Survivor: you’re keeping the ally as long as you can and then when that moment strikes?

S: Exactly, exactly. Exactly. (laughs)

K: Any other final words on the project to the listeners, and any other–.  I mean you did say where to find it, but any other parting words?

M: No. We’re just really excited about the project and thank you for listening and please check out our trailer!

S: Yeah, I would say go to 5thPassenger.com and there’s a trailer there. Like us on facebook. We’re not going to be doing like a kickstarter or indiegogo kind of funding. We’re going more traditional sources but we still need to like have that sort of fan base so that we can get into theaters and things like that. Other films like Paranormal Activity, that’s how they were able into theaters–.  Is having that fan base there. We love that we have Star Trek actors aboard the project because that has really allowed us to tap into that fan base. We have had a lot support. People come by here and they’re like, “Wow Tim Russ is in the project! I’ve been looking forward to seeing him in something else.” So to see that kind of excitement is really reassuring and it’s great to have those people come aboard–.  Message us or ‘like’ us, and get involved in what we are doing. It’s great.

K: Yeah the community makes all the difference huh?

M: Yes, it does. It really does.

K: All right. Thank you very much!

M: Thank you!

S: Thank you very much!

Briefly: It’s been rumoured for some time, but now it’s official: J.J. Abrams will not direct the third instalment in the new Star Trek series.

During a Collider interview promoting the Star Trek Into Darkness Blu-Ray release, Abrams let the news drop:

It’s a little bittersweet.  But, I will say that I’m going to be producing the movie.  Whomever it is that directs the film will be someone we all know is going to keep the cast and crew in good hands.  I feel very lucky to have been part of it, and it definitely feels like the right time to let someone come in and do their own thing.  I certainly don’t want someone to come in and try to do what I would have done.  We want to hire someone who’s gonna come in and bring their own sensibility.  I’m very excited to see what comes next, despite feeling jealous of whomever that person is.

So that’s that. I’m sure that some of you will be severely disappointed about the news, while others will be absolutely over the moon (I’m definitely in the former camp). In any case, now that Abrams is out of the picture, who would you like to see step into the director’s chair? On that note, how did you feel about Star Trek Into Darkness?

2013 Winter TCA Tour - Day 3

I was bored today, and with my birthday just around the bend I thought I would check out what was new in the world of geek toys. I’m always looking for fun Doctor Who or Walking Dead stuff, so after some research decided to share some of the new items with everyone out there on Geekscape.

1347_walking_dead_plush

Walking Dead SD Plush Dolls ($9.99): Who wouldn’t want a Rick Grimes plush doll? Okay okay, we all know the doll most of you would want to cuddle is Daryl. But come on, he wouldn’t cuddle! These are a neat collectible to go along with the show.

12fc_winchester_tavern_pint_glass

Winchester Tavern Pint Glass ($9.99): For everyone who went out to see The World’s End, I thought this was a cool one to share. A pint glass from the infamous Winchester from the film Shaun of the Dead would be a fun addition to your glass cupboard, don’t you think? If you’re anything like me you already have tons, but one more can’t hurt. Or can it?

f33c_star_trek_shield_ice_cube_tray

Star Trek Starfleet Ice Tray ($9.99): Yes, ice trays get boring, but I haven’t seen a lot of interesting Star Trek stuff in a while. Is it worth the trouble of making room in the freezer, and then making sure you stack the tray on something level just to have Star Trek ice cubes? I think we all know the answer to that.

1189_dw_50th_anniv_12pack_shot_glasses

Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Shot Glasses ($59.99): Come on, it’s the 50th anniversary of the show! Shots for everyone! No really though…these are cool little glasses that have artistic images of the twelve doctors. Fun for decoration or to use!

1162_mlp_dr_whooves_exclusive

My Little Pony Doctor Whooves ($14.99): Combine My Little Pony with Doctor Who and what do you get? Apparently this. He resembles Matt Smith as The Doctor and glows in the dark. Why not, right?

f46e_lego_starwars_c3po_keylight

Lego C3PO Star Wars Keychain Light ($11.99): If you know me at all, or you’ve been reading my posts, you should know by now I have a certain soft spot for everything Lego. So of course I have to add this item. It’s fun, Lego and actually has a use. Although admittedly it’s probably the most expensive keychain you’ll ever purchase.

1407_space_invaders_jenga

Jenga Space Invaders ($29.99): Jenga stresses me out a bit when I play, but I would deal with the pressure to play with this set. Space Invaders? Come on…it looks like a blast. Each player also has their own invader. The object is to get him down in the game. Not sure how it works, but sounds like fun.

I hope you enjoyed this as much as I did! I’d like to hear from you readers: what’s the best toy or collectible you’ve ever bought?

Yesterday, Paramount released seven new character posters for the highly anticipated release of Star Trek Into Darkness. Most of the Enterprise crew was present, but both Scotty and Chekov were noticeably absent from the images. Fans of the two were beginning to wonder what would come of the characters, as neither have been prominently featured during the film’s ongoing marketing campaign.

Fans are in luck. Paramount today released two new posters, spotlighting our missing crew members. Check them out below, and let us know what you think! Star Trek Into Darkness hits theatres on May 17th!

We’re now (finally) just one day away from the anticipated release of Digital Extremes’ Star Trek: The Video Game. The title’s marketing has made it look pretty damn awesome so far, so I’m really looking forward to hearing what reviewers have to say about it (look for ours soon). Star Trek: The Video Game helps bridge the gap between 2009’s Star Trek and next month’s Star Trek Into Darkness, and will showcase the Gorn stealing the Helios device from the resettling Vulcans.

Watch the launch trailer for the game below, and let us know what you think! This is one movie tie-in that I’m hoping is worth its cover price!

The first clip from J.J. Abrams Star Trek Into Darkness, which was previously seen in the IMAX preview for the film shown in theaters last December, has made its way online. In the clip we see the crew of the Enterprise attempt to rescue Spock from the interior of an active volcano.

In the wake of a shocking act of terror from within their own organization, the crew of The Enterprise is called back home to Earth. In defiance of regulations and with a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads his crew on a manhunt to capture an unstoppable force of destruction and bring those responsible to justice.

Ever since the high definition restoration of Star Trek: The Next Generation was announced last year for Blu-ray, the show’s third season was the one all the fans have really been waiting for. Year three of TNG was the “now we’re cookin’ with gas” season, where the show finally stepped out of the shadow of the original Star Trek, and became a legitimate pop culture phenomenon of its own. By the time the season came to its end, and Captain Jean-Luc Picard was assimilated by the Borg in Trek’s first ever cliffhanger, arguments like “is Picard a better Captain than Kirk?” seemed like relics of the past. TNG had finally carved its own niche.

Star Trek: The Next Generation had a rough first two seasons creatively…and that’s kind of putting it mildly. Although the show was a ratings hit from day one, TNG had serious creative problems from the get go. Writers and producers came and went, and two original cast members left early on; Denise Crosby (Lt. Tasha Yar) left at the end of season one, and Gates McFadden (Dr. Beverly Crusher) was fired around the same time. The 1988 writer’s strike cut down the number of episodes in season two, and by the end of that particular season, the show’s replacement chief medical officer (Diana Muldaur)  had departed the series as well. The Next Generation wasn’t a show that was living up to its premise or its cast, and by the end of the second season, TNG was a series in crisis.

Enter Michael Piller, the series’ new show runner and head writer. Piller was in charge of the writing staff on season three, and he made two massive changes to the way the show was run that changed the series’ fortunes forever. First, he made a declaration that from now on, the series would shift away from “alien of the week” or “guest star of the week”,  and focus on character, first and foremost. Any given episode would be a Data episode, or a Worf episode, or Picard episode, but they all had to be focused on one of the series’ main characters and their emotional journey, and not just the moral quandary or “lesson” of the week.

Michael Piller, the man who saved Trek.

Secondly, Piller instituted an open door policy in regards to script submissions, which meant fans and amateur screenwriters could send their scripts to Paramount in hopes of catching their big break. Most of the scripts ended up in what they called the “slush pile,” with most never to be used. But the cream rose to the top, as within that pile were some true gems. Some fan favorite episodes that season began as fan submissions. Add to that a new director of photography, Marvin Rush, who gave the show a more lush, filmic look, sleek new uniforms for the crew and a brand new opening credits sequence, and from the first episode that year, Star Trek: The Next Generation season three was almost like a soft reboot that the entire series needed. And it paid off, in spades.

Now these episodes are finally being released on a six-disc Blu-ray set from CBS Home Video, and if you consider yourself a Trek fan at all, I highly recommend going on Amazon or hitting Best Buy or wherever on April 30th when this puppy is released. Skip the first two seasons if you must, but this particular set belongs on your shelf.

The Episodes

The original Star Trek had their best year from a creative standpoint during their first season on the air. By the time they reached their third season, having barely made it back on the airwaves, and with their budget slashed in half, the quality of the show went down the drain. In that third and final year, the show’s cancellation was something of a mercy killing. Next Generation had the opposite problem–after two years of struggling, the show came together in year three, and because of that, they boldly went where the previous Trek never did; into a fourth season. And a fifth, and sixth, and so on.

After struggling for so long, TNG found its groove, and most of the season three episodes range from good to great. In fact, unlike most other seasons of the show that have some obvious stinkers, I can only think of one out of 26 episodes in season three that would really qualify as bad in any way (and for the record, that episode is Menage a Troi, a “comedic” episode focusing on Deanna Troi’s mother. Every season had one of these Mrs. Troi episodes, and 90% of them were terrible. This one is no different.)  But the rest of the twenty five episodes on this Blu-ray set are the cream of the crop for this series. Episodes like The Offspring, Sins of the Father, The Bonding, Who Watches the Watchers, Tin Man, Hollow Pursuits, Sarek, and most especially Yesterday’s Enterprise and The Best of Both Worlds, are among the very best episodes of the show’s entire seven season run.

The Restoration

The team at CBS Digital has once again done an astonishing job on the HD restoration of the series, surpassing their work on season one. As someone who has seen these episodes dozens of times over the past twenty plus years, it is still amazing to see them in such jaw dropping clarity. In many ways, I feel like I’m watching them for the first time. One could never really see all the details on the sets, or the costumes, or the model work before in such great detail, and it is a true testament to everyone involved just how well everything holds up to the unforgiving clarity of high definition. The folks at CBS Digital have set the standard for how one restores classic television shows from before the high-def era for modern audiences, specifically those shot on 35mm film, but edited on video tape. If you’re only used to watching the show the old way, or in re-runs on Sci-Fi Channel or BBC America, then you’ve never seen the show. Because of this restoration the colors and details pop like never before, and the show looks like it was shot yesterday, not twenty three years ago.

Restoration Rating: A+

The Extras

Once again, the team at CBS, spearheaded by Robert Meyer Burnett and Roger Lay Jr, have created the definitive look back at this seminal series with various behind-the-scenes documentaries. There are two all-new hour length documentaries; the first is Inside The Writer’s Room; hosted and moderated by Family Guy creator Seth McFarlane, himself a massive Next Gen geek. This feature reunites four of the writers from the glory days of the show, Ronald D. Moore, Brannon Braga, Rene Echevarria and Naren Shankar. This feature is pretty loosey-goosey in terms of how it is structured, but it’s a blast to watch these four just get together in a room and shoot the shit about the glory days of the Trek franchise. Everyone is pretty candid about not only the good times, but also the bad times, and some of the crappier episodes they produced (they had to churn out 26 of these in a nine month period every year…they’re not all gonna be classics people.) All four of these guys have gone on to long careers in the television business, but it is obvious how much they all still love Trek and look back fondly on that part of their lives.

cast_s3

The other main documentary Resistance is Futile: Assimilating the Next Generation, is split into three parts- Biological Distinctiveness, Technological Distinctiveness, and The Collective. This covers the show’s transition is season three from a troubled show looking to find its voice, into a pop culture phenomenon by the end of that year. Co-executive producer Ira Steven Behr is mainly featured in this documentary above most of the other writers, and has great stories to tell, mostly about butting heads with the other series main producers Rick Berman and Michael Piller (an ailing Gene Roddenberry was still in the mix at this point as well, although most of his crazier suggestions were mostly ignored by just about everyone, kind of like everyone’s crazy ol’ grandpa.) Ira Behr was only on staff for that third seasons, and is pretty candid about the show being hell to work on at the time.  In his words, no one back then knew they were in the middle of the show’s creative renaissance, they were all just trying to make it from week to week and not go totally crazy. And there were many times were they came this close to a staff mutiny, especially when dealing with the less than warm and cuddly Michael Piller.

There are other great features here too, including four audio commentaries for some of the most beloved episodes of the season The Bonding, Yesterday’s Enterprise, The Offspring and Sins of the Father. Three of these feature Ronald D. Moore, who has some particularly funny stories to tell about his very first gig in Hollywood, long before he was the much lauded creator of the new Battlestar Galactica. Once upon a time, he was the guy who happily came in to work on holidays and brought everyone donuts, mostly afraid that someone on staff would realize he was only hired there on a week-to-week basis, and some higher-up would figure it out and fire him.

A fifteen minutes tribute to the late Michael Piller is included here as well. Piller of course steered the course of the show that third season, and stayed a part of the Trek family throughout the rest of Next Gen, co-created Deep Space Nine and Voyager, and stayed with the television franchise all the way until the second season of Voyager. He also wrote Star Trek: Insurrection. Sadly, he died of cancer in 2005. Interviews with the former writing staff and his own wife and son are showcased here, a fitting tribute for a man for whom the Trek franchise owes its continued existence to. While it is clear that his writing staff often butt heads with him, it is clear that just like a stern dad that pissed them all off on occasion, they all still loved the hell outta the guy, and miss him dearly.

Rounding out the extras are an HD Gag Reel, and several scenes with the late actor David Rappaport (Time Bandits) from the episode The Most Toys. He originally played the villain in that episode, Kivas Fajo, but only a few scenes of his were shot due to a suicide attempt he made during the time he was making the episode. (He was replaced by actor Saul Rubinek.) Not long after he was replaced, he succeeded in killing himself, but during the restoration of the episodes for HD, his footage he did film was discovered, and is included here–a rare glimpse into what might have been. An all the special features from the old DVD sets are included here as well, in standard definition of course. No stone was left uncovered.

Extras Rating: A

But WAIT! That’s Not All!

Also on April 30th, CBS Home Video is also releasing a special stand alone release of The Best of Both Worlds two part episode, featuring the famous Borg cliffhanger from season three, and the second part from the as-yet released season four, edited together as one epic movie. This single disc release has its own series of extras, unique to this release, including a gag reel, an audio commentary (not on the season three set, I might add) and a behind-the-scenes documentary about the making of this now classic two-parter. Of course, some fans might feel it’s a cash grab, and truth be told,  it kind of is. But what self respecting Trek nerd doesn’t want The Best of Both Worlds: The Movie on their shelf? You know you’ll watch it more often than most of the Next Generation feature films.

StarTrekTNG_TBOBW_BRD24719

Overall Rating For Both Releases: A

CBS Digital has gone above and beyond the call of duty for these Blu-ray restorations, and the discs show just how much TLC was put into these releases. The work from everyone involved here has been nothing short of amazing. I simply can’t wait for seasons 4-7, and The Prophets willing, Deep Space Nine in the not-too-distant future. Both Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 3 and The Best of Both Worlds are available everywhere April 30th, 2013, and are highly recommended.

Paramount today released a new TV spot for the wildly anticipated Star Trek Into Darkness. This spot doesn’t seem to feature any new footage, but somehow it still excites the hell out of me.
