HOLY FREAKING CRAP! HOLY! FREAKING! CRAP! HOLYFREAKINGCRAP! Pokemon GO looks fucking awesome!

What do you get when Nintendo, Niantic and The Pokemon Company join forces? You get something AMAZING!

Pokemon GO is a chocolate peanut butter situation if I have EVER seen one. The team that brought the world Ingress have finally moved onto a new project, and they’re teaming up with a beloved franchise. As the above trailer depicts, Pokemon GO is going to have players getting up and off the couch and out into the world to catch some ‘Mon!

Travel between the real world and the virtual world of Pokémon with Pokémon GO for iPhone and Android devices! With Pokémon GO, you’ll discover Pokémon in a whole new world—your own! Pokémon GO will use real location information to encourage players to search far and wide in the real world to discover Pokémon.

The Pokémon video game series has used real-world locations such as the Hokkaido and Kanto regions of Japan, New York, and Paris as inspiration for the fantasy settings in which its games take place. Now the real world will be the setting!

The Pokémon video game series has always valued open and social experiences, such as connecting with other players to enjoy trading and battling Pokémon.Pokémon GO’s gameplay experience goes beyond what appears on screen, as players explore their neighborhoods, communities, and the world they live in to discover Pokémon alongside friends and other players.

What is extra exciting is the addition of a wearable. The Pokemon Go Plus is a small device that players can wear, that connects via bluetooth to their phone to give them updates about live events or other trainers nearby!

inline-576x240
Pokemon GO Plus wearable will surely attract attention!

As a diehard Ingress fan, and a diehard Pokemon fan I can’t be more excited! The thrill of running around city streets at night, with a bunch of my fellow Ingress players is one that I love, toss Pokemon into that scenario and you got yourselves something to look forward too!

Pokemon GO will hit Google Play and the App-Store early 2016. It will be FREE but have in app purchases.

Briefly: Say goodbye to your life, everyone.

Back in June, Nintendo revealed that their addicting as heck, impossible to put down, incredibly fun puzzle title Pokémon Shuffle was headed to iOS and Android platforms.

We hadn’t heard much on the subject until today, when the free-to-play game magically appeared on both the App Store and Google play.

If you’re unfamiliar with the game, it plays pretty similar to Bejewelled or Candy Crush, except it’s way, way better. In the game, “your goal is to clear various stages by lining up the same Pokémon and clearing these matches from the puzzle area. Within each puzzle stage, you can deal damage to the wild Pokémon you face by lining up three of the same Pokémon to clear them. Battle and try to catch the Pokémon before you run out of moves.”

Again, it’s incredibly fun, and incredibly addictive, so go on and give it a download, but be careful.

Take a look at the mobile trailer below, download it from the App Store or Google Play, and be sure to let us know if you’re enjoying the game!

In the mood to catch up on the long running Pokemon anime? Viz has you covered! The distributor has announced that two different releases are available now, one from the Diamond and Pearl generation, and the other diving into the newest world of X and Y.

First, Pokemon: Giratina and the Sky Warrior follows Ash as he encounters Shaymin, the Mythical Pokemon who protects nature. But when a new evil attempts to take control of Giratina, the dimension shifting Pokemon that has the power to warp time and space itself, it’s up to Ash and Shaymin to save the world from this emerging threat. Featuring many of our favorite Pokemon from the fourth generation, including Regigigas, this film serves as a look back to the DS glory days!

With 70 new Pokemon to discover, new friends to follow him on his journey, and new rivals to take on, this three disc set could be a great way to jump back into the series with the first 24 episodes.

Did you think we were going to have to wait longer to play Pokken Tournament outside of hoping on a plane to Japan? Thanks to Namco Bandai and Dave & Busters, experiencing the game just became a little more manageable.

During a Reddit AMA with Kevin Bachus, the Senior Vice President of Entertainment and Game Strategy at the restaurant, bar and game chain, confirmed that the highly anticipated Pokemon fighting game from the team behind Tekken will be coming to their arcades as a location test for the states.

From the AMA:

Yes. We will be testing Pokken. Candidly both NAMCO and I are more optimistic about that title and our typical guests than Tekken.

Obviously, details are lacking, but it’s good to know that it’s coming. Still, when will it arrive? Which locations will carry it? And does this location test mean they’re testing releasing more arcade units, or are they measuring overall interest to see if its worth porting over the inevitable console version? Either way, more Pokken is a great thing as far as I’m concerned, and you know we’ll be in those inevitable long lines when it starts popping up.

Check out the latest trailers, including the reveals of Charizard and Weavile, here. Do you plan on camping out and pushing past all the drunks to play? Sound off in the comments!

I had the opportunity to attend the Pokemon Symphonies concert at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles July 11, and the orchestra really put on an incredible show! Though the music itself was nothing short of phenomenal, they also had the nice touch of displaying footage from previous Pokemon games on several screens laid out around the amphitheater. For some younger folks, and other folks who didn’t get into the series until later on, like my wife, this was the first time they were laying eyes on some of this footage. On the screens, you were able to re-experience the fateful battle between the main protagonists of the first two generations-Red vs. Gold. Not everyone understands why this battle was so mind blowing when it was first discovered.

First, please bear in mind that I’m an adult in my late twenties, and thus, had experienced the first two generations of Pokemon as a child. As I continue to write, I believe to speak for my generation, however, the experience of others in my age group may differ slightly.

Pokemon Red/Blue was introduced back in 1998 (in North America), and Gold/Silver was introduced in 2000 (also North America), a difference of 2 years. This time frame was enough for a lot of kids to grow and mature enough for their personalities to change. Although sequels weren’t uncommon, many of us were still surprised to find out that another Pokemon game, with an expanded roster, was coming out. However, when you start playing the game, it avoids considering itself a sequel, although it makes subtle references throughout. It isn’t until you are able to venture into Kanto that the reality sets in (thanks, Iwata!).

Within Kanto, it feels like you’re venturing as the kid you were years ago, and at times it feels like the game is testing how much better you have become, both in the real world sense and the in-game fictional sense. However, nothing can quite prepare you for the Easter egg challenge that awaits you if you search hard enough: the battle with Pokemon trainer Red.

When you first face Red, there is the immediate shock that you are, quite literally, facing the person that you were years ago–even though the game takes into account that some years have passed, and thus Red’s Pokemon are much higher leveled. It is bittersweet to face Pokemon after Pokemon that you recognize, many of which were commonly used by players of that generation (such as Pikachu and the three starters). And it is such a challenging fight, nothing feels better than victory… and yet it kinda feels like you’ve “conquered” yourself, and are a bit more grown up now.

Ever since then, the trope of facing oneself from the past have been used in other games, but the battle with Red was one of the most shocking. I am certain that anybody who has experienced it has never forgotten it.

It’s been a few months since we’ve heard any major news on Pokken Tournament, the upcoming Pokemon fighting game developed by the Tekken team at Namco Bandai. As if to make up for this travesty, the game received three new trailers, two of which reveal new fighters, and the third which serves as the opening to the game.

First is the introduction of Weavile, the Dark/Ice type that evolves from Generation II favorite, Sneasel. Using its sharp claws and powerful ice attacks, this Pokemon is often associated with the bad guys of the game’s universe. In Pokken, it puts its high attack and speed stats to great use, dodging opponents attacks and getting up close with ease.

Next, the Generation I favorite, Charizard, was more of a certainty than most. Still, seeing it in action has us all the more excited for the final game. Its powerful wings, claws and fire breath serve as reliable tools for putting the hurt on the enemy, which have carried this Pokemon through nearly two decades of battle. If that’s not enough, its Mega Evolution changes it into the black clad Mega Charizard X, which aims to finish off opponents in intimidating style.

Finally, the best news of all is that the game is right around the corner. Hitting Japanese arcades on July 16th, it wont’ be long before we’ll be able to see the full game in action. Console releases or localization plans haven’t been revealed yet, but considering that it’s Pokemon, it would be ridiculous for it to be passed up.

Tell us who you would like to see in the upcoming fighter! Which Pokemon would be a perfect fit in the Pokken arena? And why would it be Hawlucha?

Briefly: One of Nintendo’s first forays into free-to-play is 3DS hit Pokémon Shuffle. The game launched back in January, and since then, over 4.5 million players have downloaded the insanely addicting puzzler.

Today, Nintendo revealed that the game is set to take over the hearts, minds, and batteries of smartphone users everywhere when Pokémon Shuffle hits iOS and Android devices later this year. Just like the 3DS version, the game will be free-to-play (with in-app purchases, of course), though the mobile edition will also be ad-supported.

The next Mystery Gift Pokemon is headed to GameStop stores for a special distribution event!

From June 22nd to July 12th, participating locations will distribute codes that will unlock an especially powerful Dragonite, thanks to its hard to get attacks and abilities. Equipped with Dragon Dance, Outrage, Hurricane and Extremespeed and its hidden Multiscale ability, trainers accross the country will have instant access to a party member that would take potential hours and trading across consoles to obtain otherwise. However, keep in mind that the codes only work in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, so X and Y purists will have to miss out.

If this giveaway is anything like previous GameStop events, you might want to jump on this giveaway ASAP. Like Shiny Gengar, Herracross, Pinsir and Diancie before it, chances are that stores will burn through their supply quick. Don’t be forced to buy free codes on eBay!

Will you add this Dragonite to your team? What tweaks would you make? Or are you just going to abuse Dragon Dance’s attack and speed boosts before steamrolling your opponents? Let us know!

Briefly: We still don’t know if we’ll ever get a chance to play it, but Pokkén Tournament sure looks to be shaping up nicely.

A new trailer for the game debuted at this year’s Japan Amusement Expo, and while it reveals no new characters (and few other surprises), the 60FPS video offers a gorgeous look at the upcoming fighter.

Take a look at the trailer below, and let us know what you think. Currently, Pokkén Tournaments is confirmed only for Japanses arcades. Don’t you miss arcades?

It looks like it’s Etrian Odyssey’s turn to get the Mystery Dungeon treatment.

In a somewhat meta announcement, Atlus announced that Etrain Dungeon will be making its Western debut in Spring 2015! This dungeon crawling RPG spinoff of a dungeon crawling RPG will feature all of the customization, loot gathering and monster slaying you would expect from one of the core games in the series, but with the top down perspective, randomly generated dungeons, and party building that comes with any game with Mystery Dungeon in the title.

This is great news for fans of both series, especially when games of this nature are far from a sure thing when getting localized. Everything from Chocobos to Pokemon have received similar treatment in various forms, and not even huge franchises like those have had every Dungeon game brought over. So needless to say, this announcement will be like Christmas come early for some.

Take a look at the details from the official press release below, then let us know what game you hope gets the Dungeon treatment in the comments!

Main features in Etrian Mystery Dungeon include:
Infinite Dungeons to Explore – Etrian Mystery Dungeon incorporates the random map feature, which changes the floor terrain each time a player enters the dungeon. This core mechanic, inherited from the Mystery Dungeon series, challenges the players with a new maze and stronger monsters every time, offering them unlimited replayability!
Attention to Detail – The Etrian Odyssey tradition of party customization is in full effect for Etrian Mystery Dungeon. After the first journey as a Landsknecht, players can freely choose their party of 4 from up to 10 different class types. While each class has a unique skill set of its own, characters can also unlock new skills through skill trees.
Not Your Grandfather’s Combat – The unique perspective in Etrian Mystery Dungeon means that special care will have to be given when selecting party members and upgrading their abilities. With dungeons chock full of enemies and all the loot and money collected at stake, being 100 percent certain in your party’s abilities is crucial for making it out alive.

Ask any Pokemon fans about their memories of the Hoenn region, and in between all the trumpets and surfing jokes, you’ll likely find fond flashbacks to a time where most of the game’s core mechanics that we take for granted today were introduced, people in the Pokemon World finally realized they could run, the first huge graphics overhaul came through in the transition between the Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance, and when we witnessed the debut of some of the most iconic monsters in franchise history. Is it any surprise that the Internet exploded with excitement when the long joked about, (but essentially inevitable,) Ruby and Sapphire remakes? With Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, it wasn’t enough just to develop a faithful remake, because the longtime Pokemon Masters at Game Freak went above and beyond, improving nearly everything we loved about the originals while advancing the series as a whole in ways that were hard to anticipate. It’s just too bad that these improvements are hampered by a series of head scratching decisions to remove popular aspects from X and Y while doing little to avoid the annoyances that have held the series back for far too long.

Stop me if this sounds familiar. OR/AS stars you as a child, who has recently moved to the quiet town of Littleroot, which is conveniently surrounded by low level monsters. The kid stumbles upon their first Pokemon after rescuing your new hometown’s bumbling Professor from a vicious Poochyena, kicking off an adventure that has you following in your finally present father’s footsteps in becoming a great trainer, while filling the Pokedex as much as you can by catching each new creature you come across.

Pokemon ORAS Screen 1

If you’re expecting the formula to have changed much in the latest Pokemon remake, then you’re looking at the wrong game, (and why would you?) In typical fashion, you’ll spend most of the time traveling from town to town building a team, battling trainers along the way, and getting stronger against the wild Pokemon of each town and route. In terms of similarities to Ruby and Sapphire specifically, you’ll instantly recognize the berry plots scattered throughout the world, Contest Halls, which offer a different form of battling that focuses more on points and exclusive move types as opposed to beating your opponents into submission, the return of secret bases, and stopping a plot that involves the evil Team Magma or Team Aqua destroying the world with the power of an ancient Pokemon. But identifying these aspects on the surface are all they have in common with their original games, because Omega and Alpha improve on each of these aspects in nearly every way.

First, the touch screen is finally put to good use, thanks to the Pokenav Plus. Using different apps, trainers can switch between a more detailed map, (that can show where you’re missing Pokemon, where Secret Bases or planted berries are located, etc.,) the online, Super Training, and Pokemon-Amie features from X and Y, a PokeBuzz TV station that gives tips, expanded story info, and data from players you’ve met through Streetpass, and the Pokedex app, which might be the show stealer of the whole game.

Almost mimicking the anime, this app introduces a whole new way to encounter Pokemon, both in and out of battle. Rather than every battle being a random encounter, most battles are purposefully initiated by making contact with silhouettes that appear in the grass, water, or even the dreaded cave. A new sneak mechanic lets players approach them slowly by slightly tilting the circle pad, revealing more information about the Pokemon as you get closer to it. Is it a new Pokemon? How many times have you seen it? What’s its first move? What’s its level? All of this and more is revealed before the battle even starts, allowing the player to decide whether or not it’s even worth it to battle before it starts. Yet, battling constantly has its own reward, since encountering the same Pokemon multiple times increases the chances of you finding one with either hidden moves that can only be typically learned through extensive breeding, versions with higher stats, (or IVs for the hardcore Pokefan,) or hidden abilities that are nearly impossible to find otherwise.

Pokemon ORAS Screen 2

It eventually led to the point where I wondered why random battles were included at all, still making caves that you’re at an equal level with insanely tedious when you’re getting into fights every five steps. Even worse? When you’re sneaking up on a Pokemon, only for a random battle to ruin your approach. To add to the annoyance, the routes between towns are littered with trainers, constantly stopping your progress to the point where I needed to avoid them for my own sanity. There’s no reason battles should feel like such a chore, which could be fixed with better pacing.

Random battles have always been an annoyance in not only the Pokemon franchise, but in turn based RPGs as a whole. But we tolerated them because it’s hard to imagine a game of this kind without them. Well, guess what? We now have a mechanic that makes battling a choice that players can make beforehand, with added incentive for continuing to fight! Can sneaking just be the standard going forward? Please, Game Freak?

Speaking of long running annoyances with the series, HMs and moves that are needed outside of battle are back with a vengeance. Every Pokemon game has had them, but in more recent iterations, the reliance on them has been scaled back, usually being able to squeeze all the moves you need onto one or two monsters that you only need in short bursts. Well, in a misguided attempt at being too faithful to the games they were remaking, Omega and Alpha has more moves than I’d ever care to use. From the usual offenders like Strength, Fly, Surf and Cut, to the return of Dive and Waterfall, and even demoted HMs like Rock Smash becoming HMs once again, these moves are especially annoying since they can’t be deleted without talking to a special character. And is that character easy to get to? Of course not. He doesn’t show up until one of the last towns in the game, so you’ll be stuck with mostly weak moves that you would never use otherwise for most of the story. And this isn’t even including TMs that have uses in the overworld, like Flash or Secret Power. That many moves requires you to clog your party with at least three members with these attacks, or constant trips back and forth to pull that Poke with as many of the moves that it can fit.

Pokemon ORAS Screen 3

Making this glaring, longtime flaw even more frustrating is the new ability to soar. Late in the story, an item allows trainers to manually fly over a fully 3D Hoenn, creating a new type of terrain to explore and allowing access to hidden areas, all while offering a new method of travel. It’s a breathtaking experience to say the least. But what makes it frustrating is that this is triggered by an item. Yes, an item.  You don’t need the Pokemon in your party who flies you around, you don’t need to waste a move slot, and you can use it as much as you want. Why can’t all HMs be relegated to Key Items. If the next game doesn’t allow me to use a surfboard or a saw to surf and cut, then something is seriously wrong. We’ve hated HMs for years. Fix them!

But with the major complaints out of the way, that clears the way to talk about all the things Omega and Alpha get right. Aside from the already stellar Pokenav features and Soaring sections that we couldn’t get enough of, nearly every individual aspect of what made generation three so special has been refined to perfection this time around, especially the contests. Essentially Pokemon’s version of a pageant, Contests feel more important than they did before, featuring their own side quest that gives you incentive to conquer every class rather than a distraction from the main game. With moves also divided in various categories for these sections, such as “Beauty,” “Tough,” “Smart,” and “Cool” attacks, each one awards points while creating different outcomes for the show, like rearranging the turn order or reducing the points of an opponent. It’s like bringing the dickishness from a game of Mario Party into the Pokemon universe! Performing multiple moves that correlate with the type of show you’re in rewards aspiring coordinators with a huge bonus too, which is now accompanied by an awesome cutscene that puts your Poke’s skill on display.

What made Contests special in the past was their ability to make you rethink move sets for more than just battling. This mentality is fully intact in the remakes, while streamlining the process when raising their special stats. In previous versions, snacks called “Pokeblock” or “Poffins” could be fed to your team by mixing certain berries. What made it more stressful than anything else however, was that each teammate could only consume 10, and if you mixed the wrong berries or did poorly on the mixing mini game, the benefit would become greatly reduced. So what we often ended up with, were droves of half developed participants who topped out on their Pokeblock before their maximum was reached, while STILL needing one for each category. While I’m sad to see mini games go in OR and AS, what we gain in their place is a much more forgiving system that lets you feed an unlimited amount of mixtures to each Pokemon, making it possible to have an all purpose Contest participant with maxed out stats. Gone is the stress that came with creating that perfect stat balance, which leaves contests as a whole better off. This, in addition to the added story content and a special “Cosplay Pikachu” that changes appearance and moves depending on what contests it focuses on, do you really need any other reason to sink another five hours or so into conquering these circuits?

Pokemon ORAS Screen 4

Speaking of story, here’s where the remakes also took this veteran trainer by surprise. If you’re expecting to blow through the shallow story of the evil team trying to awaken the ancient Pokemon to reshape the world in the image they see fit, well… That’s still here, but with much more detail, development, and plenty of new twists that weren’t in the original. With retcons abound, the ancient lore set up by X and Y plays a big role in how and why this remade version of Hoenn has become what it is, adding plenty of interesting facets to a world that many of us have been engrossed in for years. I won’t spoil anything here, but it definitely sets up some huge possibilities assuming the developers ever decide to take them anywhere. While it’s still a step below Black and White’s story, (which still holds the title for best story in the series from where I sit,) there will still be plenty of moments that will surprise even the most seasoned of trainers, (assuming the numerous official trailers didn’t ruin most of it for you already.)

And of course, we can’t talk about Pokemon Gen III without touching on Secret Bases, the mechanic where players can make their own home on the map, allowing customizable rooms that other players could visit. Most importantly, whatever party you had when you designed it could be battled by others, thanks to a CPU version of yourself, which was great for level grinding. Now tied to the 3DS Streetpass feature, bases can either be picked up by passing by a friend, or scanning a QR code that can be shared and scanned. New to the remakes is the ability to recruit other base leaders to become your grunts when people challenge your base, allowing you to turn it into your own mini Pokemon gym! The only limitation is that bases are capped at level 40, so considering how easy it is to level up with the return of X an Y‘s EXP Share, (which distributes EXP to your entire party regardless of if they fought,) these bases will hardly be a challenge. Thankfully, a post game item lets you remove the level cap, so you’ll be free to fight maxed out ‘Mons to your heart’s content.

Speaking of features taken from X and Y, these remakes seemed to have taken nearly everything that we enjoyed from the latest generation and removed them. So no trainer customization, no roller skates, and no berry farm, where you can keep all your berries in one place. Instead, what we did keep was the massive framerate issues the game encountered in 3D mode, and even at certain points in 2D. The fact that there’s zero improvement is a big disappointment, especially with how bad the previous games got universally panned for it. The series has this weird habit of removing features that we love, only to fix them years down the line. It looks like OR/AS are no exception.

Pokemon ORAS Screen 5

Yet, that’s not to say there aren’t any improvements. If X and Y was lacking in anything, it was a true post game. While the Friend Safari, Battle Maison, and bonus Looker mission kept the game going, it held little for those who wanted to explore hidden areas, or find secrets buried in the game like in previous entries. OR/AS make up for this in spades, with post game content that begins appearing BEFORE the game is over. By the time you’re left to your own devices after you beat the Elite Four and complete the epilogue, or Delta Episode, (which adds some amazing story content that’s muddled with way too much fetching and back tracking,) you’ll have new areas to explore, hidden attacks to learn, hundreds of Pokemon to rediscover on the map, and former opponents who are itching for a rematch at much higher levels. In addition to all of this, the Battle Maison returns in nearly identical fashion, which is a bit disappointing when the game flat out teases the popular Battle Frontier from Emerald. Maybe in another remake?

It’s true that nostalgia can only carry a game so far, which is why OR/AS strive to be so much more. While a simple remake would have surely sold millions, these titles go on to improve on a number of core mechanics such as battling in the wild and Contests, while providing new, exciting features and a much improved story, all while rebuilding the whole thing in 3D! With these games doing so much right, it makes it so frustrating that many longtime issues like HMs, a bombardment of random battles in certain areas, a slow, plodding pace thanks to the overabundance of trainer battles, and the return of X and Y‘s signature slowdown hold the games back from being the very best. Still, the new ideas introduced have the potential to make us rethink what a Pokemon game can be, leading OR/AS to feeling more ambitious than anyone would expect from a remake. For RPG gamers, collectors, and of course, Pokefans, this return trip to Hoenn is one that shouldn’t be missed, as long as you’re okay with a few bumps in the road.

tl;dr

+ New sneaking mechanics revitalize the art of finding, catching, and improving Pokemon!

+ Soaring introduces a fun, new way to travel, making us wonder why we need HMs in the first place!

+ Contests and Secret Bases return with improved features and less tedium.

+ The story is much improved, pointing at some exciting potential directions.

+ Hours of post game content will have you competing, catching and uncovering hidden areas for hours on end.

+ The return of Pokemon-Amie, Super Training, Horde Battles and the PSS, sans the awful Sky Battles.

The large amount of trainer battles and caves slow down the pace of the game far too often, leading to too much tedium.

HMs and some TMs restrict your progress, forcing you to sacrifice moves or Pokemon to advance.

The puzzling removal of some of X/Y‘s best features, such as trainer customization and roller blades.

The return of X/Y‘s biggest flaw; its massive slowdown, especially when the 3D is on.

Not enough land.

Final Score: 4/5

We’re getting a remade version of the Game Boy Advance’s Hoenn region in full 3D, complete with the ability to fly over the whole thing with the Eon Pokemon. We’re getting all of Pokemon X/Y’s best features, including Wonder Trade, Pokemon Amie and the PSS. We’re getting the welcomed return of Contests and Secret Bases with the added feature of letting us turn them into custom gyms. And we get all the Mudkipz we can handle! Did we mention loads of Mega Evolutions?

If you couldn’t tell, Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire are going to be huge games, but why stop here? Why not add a disaster story that centers on Rayquaza, a previously event exclusive legendary, new characters and nearly every rare Pokemon from the past? Because… Wynaut!?

After the main story is complete, the Delta Episode continues the struggle against Team Magma and Team Aqua. Once it’s discovered that an asteroid threatens to destroy the world, the player and their newly Mega Evolved Rayquaza must take to outer space itself to attempt to save the land from this threat. But with the evil teams trying to take advantage of the situation for themselves after their failed attempts to control the land and seas, a mysterious new trainer by the name of Zinnia who’s motives are still unknown, and the powerful DNA Pokemon, Deoxys, who’s on a collision course with the Sky High Pokemon. But you know, no pressure. It’s just the fate of the Hoenn region in your hands.

In addition to this new side story, the Mirage Spots that were mentioned in previous trailers were expanded on, showing off even more Legendary Pokemon that will be available. Including Cresselia, Heatran, Uxie, Azelf, Mespirit, Entei, Raikou, Suicune, Cobalian, Virizion, Terrakion and others who have previously been shown, it’s never been easier to catch em’ all! If that wasn’t enough, three golems can unlock an ancient monster that we’re all familiar with, but only if players can solve the mysteries surrounding them.

Can this game get any bigger? With so many Mega Evolutions, new content, Pokemon to catch and side missions to play, it’s looking more and more like a must buy. And how awesome would it be if Deoxys ended up being the first Event Pokemon that can be caught normally in game? With only a week away, it won’t be long until we’re knee deep in another trip to the Pokemon World, and I couldn’t be any more excited!

But I must ask, now that we’re giving away more post game content, do you good people out there think there will be even more surprises once the game hits? Or have they laid their cards on the table early, potentially ruining all the surprise?  Let us know!

Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire releases on November 21st.

A younger me would have died for the opportunity to catch both Eon Pokemon in the original Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire. At the time, the legendary Pokemon, Latios and Latias, were not only a pain to catch, but were each locked to a specific version of the game. So my Latias was awfully lonely without her better half at her side. There WAS a way to catch the opposite one, but only if you owned an e-Reader and a rare Eon Ticket card. I was enough of a dork to own the former, but never the latter.

Thankfully, Nintendo and The Pokemon Company are making it much easier this time around. Eon tickets will be given out as a wireless distribution event located at each of the official Pokemon meet up groups across the country. Can’t make it? Well, hope is not lost, because from there, anyone with the ticket can pass it on through Streetpass. As if you didn’t need more reason to carry your 3DS everywhere!

With all of the hype surrounding the expanded role of the two psychic bird/plane things, (including their Mega Evolutions and the ability to fly through a 3D Hoenn in search of rare monsters), knowing that we’ll have easier access to both is welcomed news. No e-Reader retired!

Musicals. Video games. Unless you’re breaking world records on Disney Sing It like I’ve been known to do, then you wouldn’t think the two would go hand in hand. Attempting to right this wrong, a YouTube group that goes by the name of Random Encounters is looking to change that perception.

Covering a variety of games and subjects ranging from Resident Evil to Pokemon and even Godzilla, chances are if you have something you nerd out over when it comes to gaming, these guys and gals have probably covered it. The videos even have easter eggs for those eagle eyed viewers out there. Can you spot The Beard?

One of my favorites that were screened at Comikaze was the video for Hyrule Warriors, which can be seen below. If you like what you see, make sure to subscribe to their channel and let them know what you’d like to see next! That is, if you have time between all of the holiday gaming.

As if Smash Bros. Wii U, Pokémon Omega Ruby, Pokémon Alpha Sapphire, and Amiibo figures weren’t enough, Nintendo has added two more products for North American gamers in an already jammed-packed November.

The Nintendo 2DS will come in two new color schemes this holiday season–Crystal Red and Crystal Blue. These new variants of the kid-friendly handheld match the themes and release date of the upcoming Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire titles–offering consumers an opportunity to purchase a Pokémon/2DS combo for around $140. Anyone looking to introduce any youngsters in their family to handheld gaming or Pokémon, this may be your best deal yet. With a library consisting of Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Super Smash Bros. 3DS, Super Mario 3D Land, Kirby Triple Deluxe, Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon, and Mario Kart 7, the Nintendo handheld will keep your youngster busy and happy for quite some time.

Both systems go on sale November 21.

Months have passed since our international brethren have received the elusive Mythical Pokemon. Now, it’s time for The States to get their chance.

Diancie, the first event exclusive Pokemon that was teased for the west months back, will be coming to Gamestop stores via a distribution event. From October 27th until November 16th, (one week shy of the launch of Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire,) trainers can pick up their vouchers and find themselves one step closer to fully completing the Pokedex. In addition, trading it over to one of the upcoming remakes will unlock a Mega Stone to use Mega Diancie, adding prestige to a Pokemon that’s already in high demand.

With Diancie finally available, there won’t be much need for haggling for it online anymore. I for one, am relieved that we finally have the first event Pokemon coming to our shores. What events are you hoping make it stateside?

Make sure to add Diancie to your team when Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire launches on November 21st.

Remember that image from late last year featuring Lucario face to face with Blaziken in a 3D space? After months of speculation, and even our own E3 predictions expecting as much, The Pokemon Company has officially unveiled Pokken Tournament, a 3D fighting game that is heading to Japanese arcades in 2015!

Developed by the team behind the popular Tekken series, Pokken Tournament will promises to bring that fighting pedigree to the world of Pokemon. With Lucario, Blaziken and the king of the Starter Deck, Machamp, there are still questions that are left unanswered. Will there be more than just fighting types included? When will it be released? And when, (not if,) will the game receive a console release, especially outside of Japan?

It might be a long time before we find out the answers, but for the time being, we can watch the game’s reveal trailer to our heart’s content. Check it out below, then tell us who you’re hoping makes the jump to the fighting game world!

Just days after a new set of Mega Evolotions were revealed for the upcoming Pokemon remakes, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, the Korean Pokemon website leaked two new forms that are set to debut.

First, Mega Audino is the first confirmed generation five Pokemon to get a Mega Evolution, taking advantage of its status as a high HP weilder. Taking the appearance of a doctor, it’s appropriate that it gains the Healer ability, allowing it to cure an ally’s status condition… that should come in handy.

Despite Audino’s Black and White representation, an old favorite is the one who steals the show. Mega Slowbro gets a hilariously sad new Mega form, where it appears the shell on its tail has begun to swallow him whole. While the look on its face screams for someone to save it, its Shell Armor ability protects it from critical hits, potentially keeping it on the field for a long time. In addition to a Defense and Special Defense increase on top of its already bulky stats, and Slowbro might be even harder to take down as before.

As usual with these types of leaks, we can expect an official announcement in the coming days. What’s your take on the new Mega Evolutions, and who would you like to see get the Mega treatment next? Let us know in the comments!

Update: both Mega Audio and Mega Slowbro have been officially revealed. Take a look at the trailers below!

To celebrate the grand opening of the Pokemon Center online store, The Pokemon website has announced that the Pokeball patern Vivillon is now available to download as a Mystery Gift in Western copies of Pokemon X and Y.

Vivillon is a new Pokemon, introduced in the newest games as the typical three stage bug that usually shows up at the start of a trainer’s adventure. But before dismissing it as Butterfree number five, once fully evolved, its wings will display one of numerous patterns, which vary depending on where the player lives in real life. Until now, this special Pokeball patern was only available through a giveaway in France, making the pattern highly sought after. But after receiving our own version with the significantly less cool Fancy patern, and an abysmally pointless giveaway of Pinsir and Herracross that have NO special moves, (or even their Mega Stones without a special trip to GameStop), it looks like this might be the first step towards giving us event Pokemon that are actually sought after.

This giveaway will be taking place until August 12th, so you won’t have long to download it before you’ll have to say bye bye Butterfree Vivillon.

Vivillon

After months of teasing, offering excluisve preview items and dangling a countdown over our heads, The Pokemon Center online store has finally opened, offering plenty of exclusive items to celebrate its grand opening.

Serving as the go-to place for any and all Pokemon merchandise, the store currently features numerous games, trading cards, plushies, shirts, mugs, stationary… Pretty much everything that you never knew you wanted, (except my long awaited Espurr and Substitute plush… for now). Currently, the collection is sparse, since some of the items are either already sold out or still in development, but if you can get anything, I would suggest one of the delivery Pikachu pieces that were made especially to celebrate the launch of the store. Show up to school with your new grand opening binder and your special pin on your bag while sipping out of your Pikachu tumbler, and you’re guarenteed to have so much swagger, everyone in your presence will get stronger right before hitting themselves in their confusion.

If you’re broke and can’t celebrate with some good, old fashion capitalism, you can always download the Pokeball patern Vivillon into your copy of X and Y, for the low price of free. You know, if you’re a filthy Commie. Otherwise, check out the store here, then let us know what you’re going to buy!

PokemonCentre

We’ve been treated with a steady stream of Pokemon Alpha Ruby and Omega Sapphire news since the game was innitially announced, but not quite as much as the latest trailer shows off, giving us a glimpse of the many features the game will bring back from the Hoenn region.

Showing off the changes made to the eight gyms we’ll get the chance to revisit, many of the locations, (as well as the leaders themselves), have received huge overhauls since their last appearance on the Game Boy Advance, (which is the expectation when moving to a 3D engine). But OR and AS look to take it a step further, allowing you to challenge countless gym leaders, or even become one yourself, thanks to the revamped Secret Base feature.

Longtime Pokemon players will remember Secret Bases; locations on the map where you can create a small home for yourself in caves or trees. Their biggest draw however, was that your base would be sent to the last person you traded or battled with, allowing other trainers to visit your base and battle you again via CPU for EXP points. Now, the customization promises to be much deeper, allowing you to design your base like a Pokemon gym. By scanning custom QR codes, players from all around the world will be able to solve your gym puzzle and battle your toughest team.

And if these reveals, (including cosplaying Pikachu), weren’t enough, the trailers end revealed Mega Metagross! While not much of a surprise, considering Metagross was the champion’s signature Pokemon in the originals, it was still great to see it confirmed. Now more floaty and with a Metang attached to its bottom, Mega Metagross is said to gain a small boost to all of its stats in addition to a huge speed boost, which was its biggest weakness in the past. On top of gaining the Tough Claws ability, and what’s left is a monster that’s even more powerful than before… And that’s saying a lot considering Metagross was already considered one of the best in the game as is.

What do you think of Mega Metagross and how long do you think it will take to get banned? How will you dress your Pikachu up? And what kind of gym will you create when the game hits stores on November 21st?

Late last week, Pokefans were shocked when Nintendo officially trademarked the name Pokemon Delta Emerald. An obvious reference to the recently announced Alpha Ruby and Omega Sapphire remakes, this information has led to speculation that a third version will eventually be made.

Whether or not this is actually the case is yet to be revealed, but as far as I can tell, it’s safe to say that nothing will come of this. Why? First of all, it’s not out of the ordinary for companies to trademark names that they never use for the purpose of keeping others from using the name while simultaneously owning it in case they ever do decide to make something out of it.

What would be out of the ordinary however, would be for Nintendo to make a third version of a remake, Pokemon is somewhat notorious for milking their main games with extra versions, starting with pokemon Yellow. Every generation has had a third version, (assuming you count Black 2 and White 2), but no remake has ever taken the plunge. FireRed and LeafGreen never had a LightningYellow or whatever. HeartGold and SoulSilver never saw a version of Crystal. So what would be the reason to do so now?

And lastly, it wouldn’t make much sense. For the most part, third versions would refine the game play and make small changes to the story while usually integrating exclusive aspects of the first set of games into one nifty cart. The remakes however, have traditionally been closer to the third versions than the original two that they’ re named after, making FireRed and HeartGold feel mostly like Yellow and Crystal respectively. Why would this be any different this time around? I fully expect a showdown between Kyogre and Groudon. I would be surprised if you don’t battle both Team Magma and Aqua, And most of all, I’d be surprised if Rayquaza doesn’t swoop down to stop it all like he did in Emerald. Coming up with a third version just to retread content ‘that was already a retread to begin with sounds highly illogical.

Having said that, I’m excited to see what kind of changes await our return to Hoenn, regardless of how many versions there are. Would you like to see Emerald remade, or are two versions enough? Be heard, Pokefans!

Hoenn confirmed!

Last week, Nintendo officially announced Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, the long speculated remakes of the Game Boy Advance originals. However, aside from the confirmation and worldwide release date, nothing else was said about the 3DS titles.

Sensing our thirst for more, Nintendo has released a trailer showing off the cover legendaries, Groudon and Kyogre… but not much else.

Well… it’s better than nothing, right? Either way, it looks like forthcoming information is going to be a slow burn until its November release date. Either that, or they’re saving the big news for the upcoming E3 Expo. Still, it makes you wonder why we haven’t seen 3D Hoenn yet, but if history is any indicator, there are sure to be some surprises in store for Pokemon trainers around the world when the release date finally hits.

If anything is announced in the coming weeks, you can count on Geekscape to bring you all the incoming details as they’re released.

No fanfare. No lead up. No hilarious vid featuring Reggie Fils A Mech. Just this very innocuous and to the point trailer.

Announcing Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire for the Nintendo 3DS family of systems! Prepare for an epic adventure exploring a world filled with Pokémon!

Pokémon fans first enjoyed Pokémon Ruby Version and Pokémon Sapphire Version when it launched in 2003 for the Game Boy Advance. Now, a whole new generation of Pokémon fans will experience the dramatic storyline that unfolds in Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire.

Look forward to Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire when the games launch worldwide in November 2014!

They’re really following their formula quite well right here. Make great Pokemon game > Make the third for that generation > Make next generation > Remake last generation.

This isn’t really a “SURPRISE” in anyway, but it is still great news none the less. Sapphire was my last and favorite Pokemon game, and it looks like I am going to be getting Alpha come this November.

Nintendo’s latest direct is over, but the excitement hasn’t faded. The father of the Pink Puff Ball, Masahiro Sakurai led the event from his studio, and oh boy did he have a bunch of fantastic news for us!

The biggest, and obviously the most important are the release dates. They’ve narrowed down both the 3DS and Wii U windows. Expect 3DS out this Summer and the Wii U version ships this Winter. Both versions will have the same characters and we can expect the game to run in a solid 60 FPS. What I found very interesting is backgrounds and assist trophies will run in 30 FPS so as not to slow down the gameplay.

It’s obvious Nintendo wants to win back the competitive players with this iteration, as they’ve included two online battle modes. “For Fun” will feature all levels, items and only wins are recorded. “For Glory” will feature no Items and only Final Destination is available as a playable battlefield. Wins AND loses will be recorded on the player profile. The most exciting news for this mode is that most of the new levels will have a “Final Destination Mode”. This is basically a re-skin of the very popular Final Destination level from Melee.

Unique to the 3DS version is the “Smash Run” mode. Players are dumped into a dungeon and have five minutes to scour the level for upgrades. Speed, attack, defense, special and more can be collected. Each powerup stacks and gets added to your overall stats. Then its battle time! Sakurai said he took the idea from Kirby’s Air Ride City Trial mode.

smash3DS_run_2
Example of stat changes in Smash Run

An awesome addition for local play and online with friends is the custom move sets. Players will be able to take their favorite fighter and adjust how they are played. No specific details were released but from the footage shown it looks like speed and power can be tweaked.

Gone are the characters that change during battle due to a trigger. No more Zero Suit Samus after the Final Smash; those characters are all now selectable on their own. Samus, Sheik and Charizard have been confirmed.

Notably the most anticipated news was the inclusion of new characters. New to the franchise is Greninja, the final evolution of Froakie (Seriously, fire the guy who names Pokemon. He peaked with Jigglypuff) from Pokemon X and Y.

“New Super Smash Bros. games are a major event for video game fans everywhere, and present an experience that only Nintendo can offer,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “Fans have two launches to look forward to this year, and they will want to get in plenty of practice with the Nintendo 3DS version so that they can be prepared for the launch of the Wii U game later in the year.”

To view the Nintendo Direct in its entirety, visit http://www.nintendo.com/nintendo-direct. Today’s announcements included:

-Launch windows: The Nintendo 3DS version of Super Smash Bros. is planned to launch this summer. The Wii U version of Super Smash Bros. is planned to launch in winter 2014.

Silky-smooth 3D: Most game-play elements of the Nintendo 3DS version of the game will run at 60 frames per second, all in stereoscopic 3D.

-“Smash Run”: Exclusive to the Nintendo 3DS version of the game is a new mode called “Smash Run.” In this mode, four players have five minutes to enter a dungeon and explore the surroundings, fight enemies and obtain power-ups to enhance their fighters. Once the five minutes are up, all four fighters enter a battle arena using their newly equipped items and power-ups. Enemies encountered in the Smash Run mode are from a wide range of game series. Multiple Nintendo 3DS systems and games are required for multiplayer modes.

-New challenger!: Greninja, the awesome final evolution of Froakie from Pokémon X and Pokémon Y, joins the roster as a playable character in Super Smash Bros. for both Wii U and Nintendo 3DS.

-Oldies but goodies: Many of the classic characters from past Super Smash Bros. games that are returning in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS have new powers and abilities. Four characters that have appeared in previous games, but had yet to be announced before this Nintendo Direct, include:

Zero Suit Samus: That’s right, Zero Suit Samus is back, but this time she is her own fully playable character, separate from suited Samus. In the new game, she is given jet boots to make her even more powerful.

Sheik: As with Zero Suit Samus, Sheik is another character that appeared in previous Super Smash Bros. games, but will be a unique playable character for the first time in the new Wii U and Nintendo 3DS games. Sheik has new moves like Burst Grenade and Bouncing Fish.

Yoshi: In previous games, Yoshi stood on two legs and hunched over, as if Mario were going to jump on top of him at any moment. This new version of Yoshi stands completely upright, making him an even stronger fighter.

Charizard: After appearing from a Poké Ball in Super Smash Bros. Melee and becoming playable by using Pokémon Trainer in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, this fire-breathing Pokémon is now a selectable character.

-Online play: Both the Wii U and Nintendo 3DS versions of Super Smash Bros. will offer online multiplayer game play with other players on the same platform. Players with broadband Internet access can battle it out with anyone else who is online and also has the game.

-When playing with random players online, two modes are available: “For Fun” and “For Glory.” In “For Glory,” only Final Destination stage variations are available. There are no platforms, elevated areas or items in this mode. It is a nice, clean battle between characters. In “For Fun,” all stages are picked randomly and all items and power-ups are available.

-When playing with friends, full customisation is available – players can set the rules, stages and items however they want.

-Variety of stages: While the cast of playable characters is the same in both versions of the new games, the stages where the battles take place are vastly different, depending on which system a player chooses. The Wii U stages are primarily based on past home console games, while the Nintendo 3DS stages draw from hand-held games for inspiration.

-Boss characters, such as the Yellow Devil in Dr. Wily’s Base, will make appearances in some stages. When bosses appear, fighters will have to battle the boss, as well as one another. The boss can even be used in strategic ways to damage other fighters.
-Almost all the stages in both versions of the game will have a “Final Destination form,” an alternate form of each stage that is inspired by the relatively simple layout of the much-loved Final Destination stage.

-Items, trophies and Pokémon: Items, assist trophies and Poké Balls all return in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS. New to the games are Master Balls, special Poké Balls that contain Legendary Pokémon like Arceus and Xerneas.

-Get connected: There will be elements in Super Smash Bros. that link both versions of the games. More details about this will be revealed at a later date.

-Custom moves: In a series first, players can now customise move sets when playing locally or online with friends. More information about this feature will be announced in the future.
