Well, that didn’t take long.

We knew it wouldn’t be long until Arisa, the serious tsundere of Poppin’ Party would be driven crazy by the antics of her band-mates, especially given the nature of PICO. Yet, here she is in episode two already fed up with the impossible ideas that her group wants to put into place to increase their popularity. After only three people showed up to their latest concert, (one of which was on their phone the whole time, possibly playing Bandori), the band knows something needs to change so they can reach the heights that Roselia and Hello Happy World have. How do they do that? By throwing every idea out that comes to their mind, practicality be damned.

What makes this episode especially funny is that Saya, Tae and to a lesser extent, Rimi, are typically more serious, so seeing them propose progressively insane ideas to insert into their concerts helped make the comedy stand out. This is all par the course for Kasumi, but when Saya wants to breathe fire and Tae wants to fill the stage with bunnies while the audience presumably chokes on chocolate coronets thrown into the crowd, it’s no wonder why Arisa was so  overwhelmed by the time the episode came to an end.

But can they pull off a concert with stage food, fire breathing, stand-up comedy, magic and a flying lead singer all at the same time? That remains to be seen, but I’ve learned to never doubt PoPiPa regardless of how ridiculous they get.

Episode Thoughts

– Saya and Tae’s initial suggestions of playing their instruments with their teeth and Rimi wanting to throw chocoloate coronets in the crowd actually happen in the ending animation. I’m guessing this will become a mainstay at their shows.

– “What kind of band are we”? Arisa asks a question I’ve been asking since I started playing Bandori.

– “There’s more of us than them!” was an amazing line. Maybe the solution is to have fewer people on stage at once.

– Arisa’s logical rebuttals being completely ignored really sold how off the rest of the members are compared to our tsundure queen.

– But seriously, I want to see a concert with them pulling off every idea at the same time.

On June 14, smack dab in the middle of E3 2017, I met with two members of Level-5 Inc. to discuss their latest project Layton’s Mystery Journey. The title will release on the Nintendo 3DS as well as mobile devices, both iOS and Android.

The choice to expand to the mobile platform stemmed from a desire to reach a broader audience, to create new fans while not alienating older ones. The mobile version will not follow the free-to-play model. It will have an as-yet unannounced price tag but that first purchase is all that is required to play the entirety of the game. They do plan to have in-app purchases of some variety but these are completely not required to enjoy the game (the 3DS version will not have in-app purchases). The mobile game can be played without wifi but you may want to log on each day to get the free Daily Puzzle downloads. Even without these downloads, Layton’s Mystery Journey contains over 500 hundred puzzles, more than any other title in the series.

For both the mobile and 3DS versions, the gameplay mostly remains the same at the core. However, while Professor Layton’s mysteries seemed to become grander and grander in scale with each installment, his daughter Katrielle’s game is much smaller in focus. She is just starting to establish herself as a detective and as such the tone is more light and even humorous at times. The color palette reflects this by including brighter tones. There are 12 chapters in the game’s story but there is the possibility for post-release DLC for both versions.

Another slight difference is that in the previous Layton games, the puzzles were created by the late Akira Tago. Layton’s Mystery Journey will feature puzzles from the mind of Iwanami Kuniaki. His background is in Mathematics compared to Tago’s in Linguistics. It should be interesting to see how this effects the feel of the puzzles.

Level-5 is all about portability with their games, which is why the move to mobile felt so natural. Their games are intended to be played on a handheld system. As wonderful as this is for mobile and 3DS players, owners of the Nintendo Switch are left out in the cold. The truth is Level-5 loves the Switch but the challenge with developing for it lies with the console’s hybrid nature. Yes, the Switch can be played as a handheld device (which is how Level-5 wants their games to be played) but as soon as you pop that Switch into its dock and the game goes onto the TV screen, that is where the problem arises. It is a shame but I am happy to be able to play Level-5’s beautiful games at all. Here’s hoping that they find a solution to this particular puzzle soon.

The message to new fans is that the game is “open to anyone at any age of any gender.” The game is great to pick-up and play and not intimidating, full of enjoyable moments from Katrielle’s journey.

As for extra incentives for past fans to play (if even need one), it was mentioned that there will homages to previous titles found in Layton’s Mystery Journey. They were mum on returning characters, though.

Because the mobile game launches first, Level-5 anticipates that portions of the story will be spoiled prior to the 3DS release. They aren’t concerned, however, as the main draw of the game is solving the puzzles. So even if the gamer knows the full extent of the plot going in, there is still incentive to play.

Layton’s Mystery Journey launche on mobile worldwide on July 20, 2017. It will launch on the Nintendo 3DS on July 20, 2017, in Japan, and in Autumn 2017 for the rest of the world.

This edition of “Crowdfund This” double-dips into the world of mobile gaming as well that of toys. I am talking about Jelly Realms by Loading Crew Crafts. This free-to-play game belongs to the Match 3 Puzzle genre but adds RPG elements a la Puzzle and Dragons.

plushies

One of the titles of the cooler elements is its tie-in with a line of plushes made in the likeness of some of the game’s characters. Besides Nomura the Rogue (second from the left) and Kohath the Paladin (second from the right), the remaining roster are part of various stretch goals. I am personally rooting for the spell-casting narwhal, Narlock.

Why bother with collecting plushes? Well aside from the fact that they are cute and cuddly, each toy will come with a code that will unlock a “Legendary Orange”quality version of that character which will have the highest capacity for stat growth in the game. To be clear: you do not need to purchase these toys to play the game. Every character can be unlocked through normal gameplay.

Speaking of gameplay, there are plenty of features for backers to look forward to. Players will have the ability to design their own jelly avatar as well as customize its skills and those of the whole party. There is a large cast of undersea characters to meet and recruit (along with some real-world guest stars). The game’s cutscenes will also be different depending on who is in your party. Over 50 characters are currently planned for the game, so that are plenty of potential combinations there!

The Jelly Realms Kickstarter campaign has 11 days left and at press time, has received $1,739 of the needed $33,000. You can read more about the Kickstarter (and pledge!) here.

Briefly: Back in September of last year, Nintendo and Ingress developer Niantic announced an incredible-looking mobile title called Pokémon GO, and essentially the entire world flipped out at the endless possibilities that the game could bring to the cellular world.

At its reveal, Pokémon GO was marked for an early 2016 release. Early 2016 is disappearing, we haven’t heard anything from Niantic or Nintendo about the project, and now Niantic has cancelled the scheduled March 14th Pokémon GO GDC presentation.

The news has been spreading like wildfire, and has many fans around the world worried about the status of Pokémon GO. Niantic later gave a statement to Gamespot, noting that:

“We have decided to forego our GDC talk on Pokemon Go in order to focus on getting the product ready for beta test and launch. As much as we hate to disappoint those in the industry attending GDC, we feel our time and energy right now are best spent on making sure every aspect of the product is where we want it to be.”

We’re all beyond excited for the game, and we hope that Niantic takes all the time it needs to make Pokémon GO and incredible experience. At the same time, we’re a little worried that we’ve seen and heard nothing about the project since its announcement trailer all those months ago.

What do you think is going on with Pokémon GO? Are you looking forward to the title? Sound out below!

HOLY FREAKING CRAP! HOLY! FREAKING! CRAP! HOLYFREAKINGCRAP! Pokemon GO looks fucking awesome!

What do you get when Nintendo, Niantic and The Pokemon Company join forces? You get something AMAZING!

Pokemon GO is a chocolate peanut butter situation if I have EVER seen one. The team that brought the world Ingress have finally moved onto a new project, and they’re teaming up with a beloved franchise. As the above trailer depicts, Pokemon GO is going to have players getting up and off the couch and out into the world to catch some ‘Mon!

Travel between the real world and the virtual world of Pokémon with Pokémon GO for iPhone and Android devices! With Pokémon GO, you’ll discover Pokémon in a whole new world—your own! Pokémon GO will use real location information to encourage players to search far and wide in the real world to discover Pokémon.

The Pokémon video game series has used real-world locations such as the Hokkaido and Kanto regions of Japan, New York, and Paris as inspiration for the fantasy settings in which its games take place. Now the real world will be the setting!

The Pokémon video game series has always valued open and social experiences, such as connecting with other players to enjoy trading and battling Pokémon.Pokémon GO’s gameplay experience goes beyond what appears on screen, as players explore their neighborhoods, communities, and the world they live in to discover Pokémon alongside friends and other players.

What is extra exciting is the addition of a wearable. The Pokemon Go Plus is a small device that players can wear, that connects via bluetooth to their phone to give them updates about live events or other trainers nearby!

Pokemon GO Plus wearable will surely attract attention!

As a diehard Ingress fan, and a diehard Pokemon fan I can’t be more excited! The thrill of running around city streets at night, with a bunch of my fellow Ingress players is one that I love, toss Pokemon into that scenario and you got yourselves something to look forward too!

Pokemon GO will hit Google Play and the App-Store early 2016. It will be FREE but have in app purchases.
